Abstract
Valorization of biomass derived feedstock (e.g., 5-hydroxymethylfurfural platform) is a very active field of chemical research. In this study, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural is converted into cyclopenten-2-ones by virtue of furfural's activation and Meldrum's acid's tendency to undergo decomposition/esterification. Experimental and computational studies suggest a domino rearrangement-lactonization reaction involving BINOL-catalyzed lactonization as the rate-determining step. The novel lactone-fused cyclopenten-2-ones, which bear a quaternary carbon and resemble a didemnenone natural product structure, are converted into several derivatives with potential interest for the fields of synthetic and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract
The Pauson-Khand reaction is a powerful tool for the synthesis of cyclopentenones through the efficient [2 + 2 + 1] cycloaddition of dicobalt alkyne complexes with alkenes. While intermolecular and intramolecular variants are widely known, transannular versions of this reaction are unknown and the basis of this study. Macrocyclic enyne and dienyne complexes were readily synthesized by palladium(II)-catalyzed oxidative macrocyclizations of bis(vinyl boronate esters) or ring-closing metathesis reactions followed by complexation with dicobalt octacarbonyl. Several reaction modalities of these macrocyclic complexes were uncovered. In addition to the first successful transannular Pauson-Khand reactions, other intermolecular and transannular cycloaddition reactions included intermolecular Pauson-Khand reactions, transannular [4 + 2] cycloaddition reactions, intermolecular [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions, and intermolecular [2 + 2 + 1 + 1] cycloaddition reactions. The structural and reaction requirements for each process are presented.

Abstract
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria present an ongoing challenge to both chemists and biologists as they seek novel compounds and modes of action to out-maneuver continually evolving resistance pathways, especially against Gram-negative strains. The dimeric pyrrole-imidazole alkaloids represent a unique marine natural product class with diverse primary biological activity and chemical architecture. This full account traces the strategy used to develop a second-generation route to key spirocycle 9, culminating in a practical synthesis of the axinellamines and enabling their discovery as broad-spectrum antibacterial agents, with promising activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. While their detailed mode of antibacterial action remains unclear, the axinellamines appear to cause secondary membrane destabilization and impart an aberrant cellular morphology consistent with the inhibition of normal septum formation. This study serves as a rare example of a natural product initially reported to be devoid of biological activity surfacing as an active antibacterial agent with an intriguing mode of action.

Abstract
In this work, we report the use of the asymmetric intramolecular Pauson-Khand reactions of 4-aryl-4-cyano-1,6-enynes for obtaining enantiomerically enriched bicyclo[3.3.0]octenones, and the influence of both the quaternary stereocenter and the sulfur functions located at ortho-position of the aryl group, on their stereoselectivity and reactivity. The sulfenyl derivatives bearing substituted or unsubstituted triple bonds and mono- and disubstituted alkene moieties afford bicyclo[3.3.0]octenones in high yields with complete diastereocontrol. These results are explained by assuming the association of the lone electron pair at sulfur to the Co-alkyne complexes.

Abstract
The development of a simple, efficient, scalable, and stereocontrolled synthesis of a common intermediate en route to the axinellamines, massadines, and palau'amine is reported. This completely new route was utilized to prepare the axinellamines on a gram scale. In a more general sense, three distinct and enabling methodological advances were made during these studies: (1) an ethylene glycol-assisted Pauson-Khand cycloaddition reaction, (2) a Zn/In-mediated Barbier-type reaction, and (3) a TfNH(2)-assisted chlorination-spirocyclization.

Abstract
Thermal treatments of feedstock gases (e.g., C(2)H(4)/H(2)) used during carbon nanotube (CNT) synthesis result in the formation of a complex mixture of volatile organic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Some of these are likely important CNT precursors, while others are superfluous and possibly degrade product quality, form amorphous carbon, and/or contribute to growth termination. To simulate the effect of thermal treatment without this chemical complexity, we delivered trace amounts of individual hydrocarbons, along with ethylene and hydrogen, to a cold-wall atmospheric pressure reactor containing a locally heated metal catalyst (Fe on Al(2)O(3)). Using these compound-specific experiments, we demonstrate that many alkynes (e.g., acetylene, methyl acetylene, and vinyl acetylene) accelerate multiwalled CNT formation with this catalyst system. Furthermore, ethylene is required for enhanced CNT growth, suggesting that the alkyne and ethylene may react in concert at the metal catalyst. This presents a distinct CNT formation mechanism where the chemical precursors may be intact during C-C bond formation, such as in polymerization reactions, challenging the widely accepted hypothesis that precursors completely dissociate into C (or C(2)) units before "precipitating" from the metal. Armed with these mechanistic insights, we were able to form high-purity CNTs rapidly with a 15-fold improvement in yield, a 50% reduction in energetic costs, and order of magnitude reduction in unwanted byproduct formation (e.g., toxic and smog-forming chemicals and greenhouse gases).

Abstract
Dicobalt hexacarbonyl complexes of alkynyl imines were allowed to react with ketenes via Staudinger reaction. Sequential [2 + 2] cycloaddition/Pauson-Khand reaction led to structurally new fused-tricyclic beta-lactams and fused-azabicyclic cyclopentenones. Chemoselectivity, scope, and limitation of the process were investigated.

Abstract
The development of metal complexes with platinum central atoms such as cisplatin or carboplatin had an enormous impact on current cancer chemotherapy. However, the spectrum of cancers that can be treated with platinum agents is narrow and treatment efficacy suffers from side effects and resistance phenomena. These unresolved problems in platinum-based anti-cancer therapy have stimulated increased research efforts in the search for novel non platinum-containing metal species as cytostatic agents. Preclinical and clinical investigations showed that the development of new metal agents with modes of action different from cisplatin is possible. Thus, complexes with iron, cobalt, or gold central atoms have shown promising results in preclinical studies and compounds with titanium, ruthenium, or gallium central atoms have already been evaluated in phase I and phase II trials. This review covers some relevant examples of preclinical and clinical research on novel non platinum metal complexes.
