Stabilization of a Pentastibacyclopentadienyl Ligand in the Triple-Decker Sandwich Complexes

Extension and Fusion of Cyclic Polyantimony Units

The synthesis and characterization of a series of polyantimony anionic clusters are reported. The products [(NbCp)2Sb10]2-, [MSb13]3- (M = Ru/Fe), and [MSb15]3- (M = Ru/Fe) were isolated as either K(18-crown-6) or K([2.2.2]-crypt) salts. The Sb10 ring contained in the [(NbCp)2Sb10]2- cluster can be viewed as an extension of two envelope-like cyclo-Sb5 units and represents by far the largest monocyclic all-antimony species. The clusters [MSb13]3- and [MSb15]3- (M = Ru/Fe) illustrate the variability of crown-like Sb8 ring motifs and reveal the fusion of different antimony fragments featuring unique Sb-Sb chain-like units. The reported synthetic approaches involve the fabrication of a variety of distinctive polyantimony anionic clusters, enhancing our understanding of the coordination chemistry of heavier group 15 elements.

[Ga@Bi10(NbMes)2]3-: a linear Nb-GaI-Nb filament coordinated by a bismuth cage

In this work, we report a low-valent Ga(I) complex, [Ga@Bi₁₀(NbMes)₂]^3-, with a linear Nb-Ga-Nb fragment, representing the first compound with Nb-Ga and Nb-Bi bonds. Quantum-chemical calculations reveal that the complex is an electron-precise cluster. The possible fragmentation pathway of the title cluster was studied by using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations.

φ-Aromaticity in prismatic {Bi6}-based clusters

The occurrence of aromaticity in organic molecules is widely accepted, but its occurrence in purely metallic systems is less widespread. Molecules comprising only metal atoms (M) are known to be able to exhibit aromatic behaviour, sustaining ring currents inside an external magnetic field along M-M connection axes (σ-aromaticity) or above and below the plane (π-aromaticity) for cyclic or cage-type compounds. However, all-metal compounds provide an extension of the electrons' mobility also in other directions. Here, we show that regular {Bi₆} prisms exhibit a non-localizable molecular orbital of f-type symmetry and generate a strong ring current that leads to a behaviour referred to as φ-aromaticity. The experimentally observed heterometallic cluster [{CpRu}₃Bi₆]^-, based on a regular prismatic {Bi₆} unit, displays aromatic behaviour; according to quantum chemical calculations, the corresponding hypothetical Bi₆^2- prism shows a similar behaviour. By contrast, [{(cod)Ir}₃Bi₆] features a distorted Bi₆ moiety that inhibits φ-aromaticity.

Synthesis of polyantimony ligand complexes starting from Cp*4Sb4

The reactivity of Cp*₄Sb₄ (1) towards ionic compounds and transition metal complexes with labile ligands was investigated in order to synthesize polyantimony ligand complexes. The silver salts [Ag][X] and the metalate Na[Cp*Mo(CO)₃] were primarily used, leading in the raction with Cp*₄Sb₄ to the formation of [Cp*₂Sb][X] (X = TEF (2a), FAL (2b)), [(Cp*Mo(CO)₃)₃(μ₃-Sb₃)] (3) and [Cp*Mo(CO)₂(η³-Sb₃)] (4), respectively. The reaction of 1 with the transition metal complexes [(Cp'''M)₂(tol)] leads to a degradation of the original Sb₄ unit and to the formation of [(Cp'''M)₄(μ₃-Sb)₄] (M = Ni (5); Co (6)). Towards [Cp^RFe(CO)₂]₂, substitutions on the antimony atoms were observed to give [{Cp^RFe(CO)₂}₄(μ₄-Sb₄)] (Cp^R = Cp'' (7a), Cp''' (7b)). All complexes were characterized by XRD and spectroscopic methods.

The Archetypal Homoleptic Lanthanide Quadruple-Decker-Synthesis, Mechanistic Studies, and Quantum Chemical Investigations

Reduction of [SmIII (COT1,4-SiiPr3 )(BH4 )(thf)] (COT1,4-SiiPr3 =1,4-(i Pr3 Si)3 C8 H6 ) with KC8 resulted in [SmIII/II/III (COT1,4-SiiPr3 )4 ], the first example of a homoleptic lanthanide quadruple-decker. As indicated by an analysis of the bond metrics in the solid-state, the inner Sm ion is present in the divalent oxidation state, while the outer ones are trivalent. This observation could be confirmed by quantum chemical calculations. Mechanistic studies revealed not only insight into possible formation pathways of [SmIII/II/III (COT1,4-SiiPr3 )4 ] but also resulted in the transformation to other mixed metal sandwich complexes with unique structural properties. These are the 1D-polymeric chain structured [KSmIII (COT1,4-SiiPr3 )]n and the hexametallic species [(tol)K(COT1,4-SiiPr3 )SmII (COT1,4-SiiPr3 )K]2 which were initially envisioned as possible building blocks as part of different retrosynthetically guided pathways that we developed.

Transfer of polyantimony units

Transfer reagents are useful tools in chemistry to access metastable compounds. The reaction of [Cp′′₂ZrCl₂] with KSb(SiMe₃)₂ leads to the formation of the novel polyantimony triple decker complex [(Cp′′Zr)₂(μ,η^1:1:1:1:1:1-Sb₆)] (1, Cp′′ = 1,3-di-tertbutyl-cyclopentadienyl), containing a chair-like Sb₆⁶⁻ ligand. Compound 1 represents a valuable transfer reagent to form novel antimony ligand complexes. Thus, the reaction of 1 with Cp^R-substituted transition metal halides of nickel, cobalt and iron leads to the formation of a variety of novel Sb_n ligand complexes, such as the cubane-like compounds [(Cp′′′Ni)₄(μ₃-Sb)₄] (2) and [(Cp′′′Co)₄(μ₃-Sb₄)] (3a) or the complexes [(Cp^BnCo)₃(μ₃-Sb)₂] (4) and [(Cp′′′Fe)₃(μ₃-Sb)₂] (5), representing a trigonal bipyramidal structure. Moreover, beside the transfer of Sb₁ units, also the complete entity can be transferred as seen in the iron complex [(Cp′′′Fe)₃(μ_3,η^4:4:4-Sb₆)] (6). DFT calculations shed light on the bonding situation of the products.

The synthesis and characterization of the unique polyantimony complex [(Cp′′Zr)₂(μ,η^1:1:1:1:1:1-Sb₆)] (1) is described. Compound 1 was used as antimony source to transfer Sb_n units to late transition metal fragments [Cp^RM] (M = Fe, Co, Ni).

Recent developments and future prospects of all-metal aromatic compounds

The usefulness of aromaticity/antiaromaticity concepts to foresee structural stability patterns and salient features of the electronic structure of small inorganic and all-metal rings has been put forward. A critical revision of the advances made in the theoretical methods to assess the aromaticity/antiaromaticity of these compounds has also been made. In particular, the performance of local versus non-local indices has been reviewed. Finally, the passivation of these rings has been put forward as a key issue in order to prevent them from collapsing into larger aggregates and to provide them protection against the environment.

Electronic structure and bonding studies on triple-decker sandwich complexes with a P6middle ring

DFT and hybrid HF-DFT studies of structure and bonding of CpMP6MCp triple-decker sandwich complexes, ranging from 18-28 valence electrons (VE) with M=Sc, Y, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, and W, show that the middle P6 ring complexes adopt symmetric planar (28 valence electron count [VEC]), asymmetric planar (26 VEC), and puckered (24 VEC) geometries. According to the mno Rule, 50 skeletal electrons are needed for these triple-decker cluster frameworks. For 28 VEC, this corresponds to 10 electrons more than the 50 electrons of the mno Rule if all VE of the metal are included. These additional electrons control the distortion of a P6 middle ring and other finer structural details. Completely filled 2a* and 2b* orbitals in 28 VE complexes lead to a planar symmetrical P6 middle ring, while the occupancy in either 2a* or 2b* alone explains the in-plane distortions (asymmetric) in 26 VE complexes. In comparison with 28 VE complexes, the puckering of P6 middle ring in 24 VE complexes is due to the greater stabilization of 5a and the extra stabilization of the +4 oxidation state of Ti. The quintet state of 22 VE complexes is planar as 2a* and 2b* are half filled. Similar geometrical and bonding patterns of CpScP6ScCp and C2P3H2ScC3P3H3ScC2P3H2 support the carbon-phosphorus analogy further. The 18 VE systems, CpScC3B3H6ScCp+ and CpScP3B3H3ScCp+, have the 50 skeletal electrons as stipulated by the mno Rule. Corresponding anions have 52 skeletal electrons (20 VE); the middle rings here are distorted in the plane.

An Unusual Ligand in Copper Chemistry: Coordination Oligomers and Polymers Containing the [{CpMo(CO)2}2(μ,η2-Sb2)] Cluster

The coordination behavior of [[CpMo(CO)(2)}(2)(mu,eta(2)-Sb(2))] (1; Cp = cyclopentadiene) toward Cu(I) was investigated. Its reaction with CuX (X = Br, Cl, and I) produced oligomers or polymers of the general formula [[CpMo(CO)(2)](2)(mu,eta(2)-Sb(2))(mu-CuX)](n). While 2 (X = Cl, n = 2) and 3 (X = Br, n = 2) proved to be halogen-bridged dimers in both solution and solid state, the molecules of 4 (X = I, n = infinity) self-assembled in the crystal forming a linear polymer with a Cu-I skeleton supported by Sb-Cu bonds. The reaction of 1 with Cu[GaCl(4)] resulted in the formation of the ionic complex [[CpMo(CO)(2)](2)(mu,eta(2)-Sb(2))](4)Cu(2)[GaCl(4)](2) (5). Its dication contains four [[CpMo(CO)(2)](2)(mu,eta(2)-Sb(2))] ligands arranged around a Cu-Cu dumbbell. All new compounds were characterized using IR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, (1)H NMR, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The ligand was oxidized by both silver(I) and copper(II), and a cyclovoltammetric study revealed that 1 suffered irreversible reduction and oxidation in a dichloromethane solution at -2.04 and 0.10 V, respectively, versus ferrocene.

Group 14 triple-decker cations

The triple-decker cations trans-[(Cp*Sn)(2)(mu-eta(5):eta(5)-Cp*)](+) and trans-[(Cp*Pb)(2)(mu-eta(5):eta(5)-Cp*)](+) have been prepared and structurally characterized as their [B(C(6)F(5))(4)](-) salts from the reactions of [Cp*M][B(C(6)F(5))(4)](M = Sn, Pb) with the appropriate decamethylmetallocene. Both triple-decker cations adopt a cisoid arrangement of terminal Cp* groups, whereas the two known triple-decker main-group anions possess a transoid arrangement of terminal Cp groups. The reason for this conformational difference has been probed on the basis of DFT calculations.
