Anion-Templated Syntheses of Rhombohedral Silver-Alkynyl Cage Compounds

Anomalous Structural Transformation of Cu(I) Clusters into Multifunctional CuAg Nanoclusters

We report an anomalous structural transformation of a Cu(I) cluster into two different types of copper-silver (CuAg) alloy nanoclusters. Different from previous reports, we demonstrate that under specifically designed reaction conditions, the Ag-doping could induce a substantial growth of the starting Cu15 and a Ag13Cu20 nanocluster was obtained via the unexpected insertion of an Ag13 kernel inside the Cu(I)-S shell. Ag13Cu20 demonstrates high activity to initiate the photopolymerization of previously hard-to-print inorganic polymers in 3D laser microprinting. Interestingly, a slight modification of the reaction condition leads to the formation of another Ag18-xCuxS (8≤x) nanocluster templated by a central S2- anion, which possesses a unique electronic structure compared to conventional template-free CuAg nanoclusters. Overall, this work unveils the intriguing doping chemistry of Cu clusters, as well as their capability to create different types of alloy nanoclusters with previously unobtainable structures and multifunctionality.

Incorporation of the 99TcO4- Anion within the Ag24(C≡CtBu)204+ Cluster Unveiling the Unique Shell-to-Core Charge Transfer

We present the first example of an 99TcO4- anion entrapped within the cavity of a silver cluster, revealing an unprecedented photoinduced charge transfer phenomenon. [Ag24(C≡CtBu)20(99TcO4)]·(BF4)3 (denoted as 99TcO4-@Ag24) was successfully synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy reveal that the tetrahedral structure of the 99TcO4- anion sustains significant symmetry breaking with weakened Tc-O bond strength under confinement within the Ag24(C≡CtBu)204+ cluster. Notably, 99TcO4-@Ag24 exhibits a broadband electronic absorption spectrum in the visible region, which was absent for the other 99TcO4--containing compounds. Density functional theory calculations elucidate that host-guest electrostatic interactions result in an electron polarization effect between the 99TcO4- anion core and the Ag24 cationic shell. The emergence of an absorption band in 99TcO4-@Ag24 is rationalized by intermolecular charge transfer from the Ag24 electronic states to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of 99TcO4- instead of the intramolecular electron transition observed in other 99TcO4--containing compounds.

ClAg14 (C≡Ct Bu)12 Nanoclusters as Efficient and Selective Electrocatalysts Toward Industrially Relevant CO2 Conversion

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) have emerged as a promising frontier in the field of electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions (CO2 RR) because of their distinctive catalytic properties. Although numerous metal NCs are developed for CO2 RR, their use in practical applications has suffered from their low-yield synthesis and insufficient catalytic activity. In this study, the large-scale synthesis and electrocatalytic performance of ClAg14 (C≡Ct Bu)12 + NCs, which exhibit remarkable efficiency in catalyzing CO2 -to-CO electroreduction with a CO selectivity of over 99% are reported. The underlying mechanisms behind this extraordinary CO2 RR activity of ClAg14 (C≡Ct Bu)12 + NCs are investigated by a combination of electrokinetic and theoretical studies. These analyses reveal that different active sites, generated through electrochemical activation, have unique adsorption properties for the reaction intermediates, leading to enhanced CO2 RR and suppressed hydrogen production. Furthermore, industrially relevant CO2 -to-CO electroreduction using ClAg14 (C≡Ct Bu)12 + NCs in a zero-gap CO2 electrolyzer, achieving high energy efficiency of 51% and catalyst activity of over 1400 A g-1 at a current density of 400 mA cm-2 is demonstrated.

Heterometallic AuI 6 AgI 6 Macrocyclic Cluster Templated by a Supramolecular Melamine Dimer

The application of supramolecular templates in aligning atomically precise heterometal arrays is important for pursuing functional materials. Herein, we report that a bilayered supramolecular tri-deprotonated melamine dimer functions as an effective template in the construction of a heterometallic gold(I)-silver(I) macrocyclic cluster [μ6 -(C3 N6 H3 )3- ]2 -AuI 6 AgI 6 . X-ray single crystal structural analysis showed that a crown-like AuI 6 AgI 6 macrocycle is aligned around two parallelly stacked μ6 -(C3 N6 H3 )3- moieties hold together with π-π interactions. Theoretical calculations revealed that the [μ6 -(C3 N6 H3 )3- ]2 motif dominantly contributes to the near-occupied orbitals in the electronic structure, which is closely related to its luminescence properties. This work demonstrates that the supramolecular templates containing multiple symmetric binding sites may present a facile approach in the construction of functional metal clusters.

Thiacalix[4]arene Etching of an Anisotropic Cu70H22 Intermediate for Accessing Robust Modularly Assembled Copper Nanoclusters

Atom-precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) with large bulk (nuclearity >60) are important species for insight into the embryonic phase of metal nanoparticles and their top-down etching synthesis. Herein, we report a metastable rod-shaped 70-nuclei copper-hydride NC, [Cl@Cu70H22(PhC≡C)29(CF3COO)16]2+ (Cu70), with Cl- as the template, in which the Cl@Cu59 kernel adopts a distinctive metal packing mode along the bipolar direction, and the protective ligand shell exhibits corresponding site differentiation. In terms of metal nuclearity, Cu70 is the largest alkynyl-stabilized Cu-hydride cluster to date. As a typical highly active intermediate, Cu70 could undergo a transformation into a series of robust modularly assembled Cu clusters (B-type Cu8, A-A-type Cu22, A-B-type Cu23, and A-B-A-type Cu38) upon etching by p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H4TC4A), which could not be achieved by "one-pot" synthetic methods. Notably, the patterns of A and B blocks in the Cu NCs could be effectively modulated by employing appropriate counterions and blockers, and the modular assembly mechanism was illustrated through comprehensive solution chemistry analysis using HR-ESI-MS. Furthermore, catalytic investigations reveal that Cu38 could serve as a highly efficient catalyst for the cycloaddition of propargylic amines with CO2 under mild conditions. This work not only enriched the family of high-nuclear copper-hydride NCs but also provided new insights into the growth mechanism of metal NCs.

X-ray-triggered through-space charge transfer and photochromism in silver nanoclusters

Materials exhibiting X-ray-induced photochromism have consistently piqued the interest of researchers. Exploring the photochromic properties of such materials is valuable for understanding the structural changes and electron transfer processes that occur under high energy radiation, such as X-ray irradiation. Here, a crystalline silver(I) nanocluster synthesized from tert-butylacetylene silver was found to have the ability to exhibit color and photoluminescence changes upon exposure to X-ray radiation. The responsive behavior was observed across a wide temperature range of 100-300 K, with the ability to respond particularly well to soft X-rays (λ > 1 Å) and exhibit light responsiveness to hard X-rays (λ < 1 Å). By combining experimental findings including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron spin resonance, etc. with theoretical calculations, we have proposed that X-ray irradiation induces electron transfer from chloride (Cl-) located in the center of the silver(I) nanocluster to the surrounding Ag14 in the skeleton. This represents the first documented example in which electron transfer induced by X-ray excitation has been observed, accompanied by a photochromism process, in silver nanoclusters. This study contributes to our understanding of X-ray-induced photochromism and the electron transfer process in silver cluster compounds. It also provides valuable insights and potential design strategies for applications such as photochromism, photoluminescence color change, and photoenergy conversion.

Clarifying the Electronic Structure of Anion-Templated Silver Nanoclusters by Optical Absorption Spectroscopy and Theoretical Calculation

Electronic structures of anion-templated silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) are not well understood compared to conventional, template-free Ag NCs. In this study, we synthesized three new anion-templated Ag NCs, namely [S@Ag17(S-4CBM)15(PPh3)5]0, [S@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8]0, and [Cl@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8][PPh4], where S-4CBM = 4-chlorobenzene methanethiolate, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography revealed that they have S@Ag6, S@Ag10, and Cl@Ag10 cores, respectively. Investigation of their electronic structures by optical spectroscopy and theoretical calculations elucidated the following unique features: (1) their electronic structures are different from those of template-free Ag NCs described by the superatomic concept; (2) optical absorption in the range of 550-400 nm for S2--templated Ag NCs is attributed to the charge transitions from S2--templated Ag-cage orbitals to the s-shaped orbital in the S2- moiety; (3) the Cl--templated Ag NCs can be viewed as [Cl@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8]0[PPh4]0 rather than the ion pair [Cl@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8]-[PPh4]+; and (4) singlet-coupled singly occupied orbitals are involved in the optical absorption of the Cl--templated Ag NC.

Dicarboxylic Acids Induced Tandem Transformation of Silver Nanocluster

Structural transformation of metal nanoclusters (NCs) is of great ongoing interest regarding their synthesis, stability, and reactivity. Although sporadic examples of cluster transformations have been reported, neither the underlying transformation mechanism nor the intermediates are unambiguous. Herein, we have synthesized a flexible 54-nuclei silver cluster (Ag54) by combining soft (tBuC≡C-) and hard (nPrCOO-) ligands. The existence of weakly coordinated nPrCOO- enhances the reactivity of Ag54, thus facilitating the dicarboxylic acid to induce structural transformation. X-ray structural analyses reveal that Ag54 transforms to Ag28 cluster-based 2D networks (Ag28a and Ag28b) induced by H2suc (succinic acid) and H2glu (glutaric acid), whereas with H2pda (2,2'-(1,2-phenylene)diacetic acid), a discrete Ag28 cluster (Ag28c) is isolated. The key intermediate Ag17 that emerges during the self-dissociation of Ag54 was isolated by using cryogenic recrystallization and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The "tandem transformation" mechanism for the structure evolution from Ag54 to Ag28a is established by time-dependent electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, the catalytic activity in the 4-nitrophenol reduction follows the sequence Ag28c > Ag28b > Ag28a > Ag54 due to more bare silver sites on the surface of the Ag28 cluster unit. Our findings not only open new avenues to the synthesis of silver NCs but also shed light on a better understanding of the structural transformation mechanism from one cluster to another or cluster-based metal-organic networks induced by dicarboxylates.

Photoluminescence Anisotropy in Eutectic Crystals of Polynuclear Lanthanide Complexes and Silver Clusters

Anisotropy is an intrinsic property of crystalline materials. However, the photoluminescence anisotropy in eutectic crystals of organometallic complexes has remained unexplored. Herein, the eutectic of polynuclear lanthanide complexes and Ag clusters was prepared, and the crystal shows significant photoluminescence anisotropy. The polarization anisotropy of emission δ and degree of excitation polarization P are 2.62 and 0.53, respectively. The rare excitation polarization properties have been proved to be related to the regular arrangement of electric transition dipole moments of luminescent molecules in the crystal. Our design provides a reference for developing new photoluminescence anisotropy materials and expanding their applications.

Anion-templated silver nanoclusters: precise synthesis and geometric structure

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) are gaining much attention in nanoscale materials research because they exhibit size-specific physicochemical properties that are not observed in the corresponding bulk metals. Among them, silver (Ag) NCs can be precisely synthesized not only as pure Ag NCs but also as anion-templated Ag NCs. For anion-templated Ag NCs, we can expect the following capabilities: 1) size and shape control by regulating the central anion (anion template); 2) stabilization by adjusting the charge interaction between the central anion and surrounding Ag atoms; and 3) functionalization by selecting the type of central anion. In this review, we summarize the synthesis methods and influences of the central anion on the geometric structure of anion-templated Ag NCs, which include halide ions, chalcogenide ions, oxoanions, polyoxometalate, or hydride/deuteride as the central anion. This summary provides a reference for the current state of anion-templated Ag NCs, which may promote the development of anion-templated Ag NCs with novel geometric structures and physicochemical properties.

Cocrystallization of Two Negatively Charged Dimercaptomaleonitrile-Stabilized Silver Nanoclusters

Studies on the assembly of atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) are of great significance in the nanomaterial field, which has attracted increasing interest in the last few decades. Herein, we report the cocrystallization of two negatively charged atom-precise silver nanoclusters, the octahedral [Ag₆₂(MNT)₂₄(TPP)₆]^8- (Ag₆₂) and the truncated-tetrahedral [Ag₂₂(MNT)₁₂(TPP)₄]^4- (Ag₂₂) in a 1:2 ratio (MNT^2- = dimercaptomaleonitrile, TPP = triphenylphosphine). As far as we know, a cocrystal containing two negatively charged NCs has seldom been reported. Single-crystal structure determinations reveal that the component Ag₂₂ and Ag₆₂ NCs both adopt core-shell structures. In addition, the component NCs were separately obtained by adjusting the synthetic conditions. This work enriches the structural diversity of silver NCs and extends the family of cluster-based cocrystals.

The first polyoxoniobate-templated silver cluster with temperature-dependent luminescent emission

The compound [(Nb₆O₁₉)@Ag₃₄(^tBuCC)₂₄(CH₃COO)₂] (Ag₃₄) was synthesized using the solvothermal method combined with volatilization. This was the first case, to the best of our knowledge, of isolating a silver cluster containing a polyoxoniobate (PONb) template. The luminescence, solution behavior and solid-state stability of Ag₃₄ were studied in detail. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry indicated that Ag₃₄ can maintain the integrity of its skeleton in solution. Detection of temperature could be a potential application of its unique luminescent behavior. We expect this work to inspire further fabrications of PONb-templated high-nuclearity silver clusters.

Plenates: Anion-Dependent Self-Assembly of the Pyrrole Cage Encapsulating Silver(I) Clusters

The self-assembly of 2,5-diformylpyrrole, tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, and silver(I) yielded, depending on the size and basicity of the anion, new cascade complexes or plenates, that is, cryptates incorporating Ag_n ⁿ⁺ clusters. The nature of the product was counterion-dependent, and its formation was either driven by cascade anion binding or by argentophilic interactions stabilizing the cluster within the cavity. The reaction of plenates with tetrabutylammonium halides resulted in the protonation-coupled replacement of the Ag₃ ³⁺ with anion(s), yielding cascade cryptates.

Regulating the assembly and expansion of the silver cluster from the Ag37 to Ag46 nanowheel driven by heteroanions

Precise control over the shape and size of metal nanoclusters through anion template-driven self-assembly is one of the key scientific goals in the nanocluster community, however, it is still not understood comprehensively. In this work, we report the controllable synthesis and atomically precise structures of silver nanowheels Ag37 and Ag46, using homo (Cl^- ions) and heteroanion (Cl^- and CrO₄ ^2- ions) template strategies, along with macrocyclic p-phenyl-thiacalix[4]arene and small ⁱPrS^- ligands. Structural analyses revealed that in Ag37, Cl^- ions serve as both local and global templates, whereas CrO₄ ^2- ions function as local and Cl^- ions as global templates in Ag46, resulting in a pentagonal nanowheel (Ag37) and a hexagonal (Ag46) nanowheel. The larger ionic size and more negative charges of CrO₄ ^2- ions than Cl^- ions offer more coordination sites for the silver atoms and are believed to be the key factors that drive the nanowheel core to expand significantly. Also, by taking advantage of the deep cavity of thiacalix[4]arene with an extended phenyl group, Ag46 has been used as a host material for dye adsorption depending on the charge and size of organic dyes. The successful use of heteroanions to control the expansion of well-defined silver nanowheels fills the knowledge gap in understanding the directing role of heteroanions in dictating the shape and size of nanoclusters at the atomic level.

Platonic and Archimedean solids in discrete metal-containing clusters

Metal-containing clusters have attracted increasing attention over the past 2-3 decades. This intense interest can be attributed to the fact that these discrete metal aggregates, whose atomically precise structures are resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), often possess intriguing geometrical features (high symmetry, aesthetically pleasing shapes and architectures) and fascinating physical properties, providing invaluable opportunities for the intersection of different disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematical geometry and materials science. In this review, we attempt to reinterpret and connect these fascinating clusters from the perspective of Platonic and Archimedean solid characteristics, focusing on highly symmetrical and complex metal-containing (metal = Al, Ti, V, Mo, W, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, lanthanoids (Ln), and actinoids) high-nuclearity clusters, including metal-oxo/hydroxide/chalcogenide clusters and metal clusters (with metal-metal binding) protected by surface organic ligands, such as thiolate, phosphine, alkynyl, carbonyl and nitrogen/oxygen donor ligands. Furthermore, we present the symmetrical beauty of metal cluster structures and the geometrical similarity of different types of clusters and provide a large number of examples to show how to accurately describe the metal clusters from the perspective of highly symmetrical polyhedra. Finally, knowledge and further insights into the design and synthesis of unknown metal clusters are put forward by summarizing these "star" molecules.

Solvent-Controlled Condensation of [Mo2 O5 (PTC4A)2 ]6- Metalloligand in Stepwise Assembly of Hexagonal and Rectangular Ag18 Nanoclusters

Stepwise assembly starting from a preassembled metalloligand is a promising approach to obtain otherwise unattainable silver nanoclusters, but hard to be intrinsically identified due to the lack of convincing evidence to justify such a process. Herein, hexagonal and rectangular Ag₁₈ nanoclusters are constructed from the [Mo₂ O₅ (PTC4A)₂ ]^6- (H₄ PTC4A=p-phenyl-thiacalix[4]arene) metalloligand through stepwise assembly. The formation of the metalloligand is confirmed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, then assembled with silver ions to form two geometrically different Ag₁₈ nanoclusters in different solvents. The cyclization from the metalloligand to [(Mo₂ O₅ PTC4A)₆ ]^12- can be realized without alcohols and otherwise blocked by them. The installation of this metalloligand not only provides comprehensive understanding of how the solvents regulate the silver nanocluster structures, but also brings new insights for the controllable ligand metallization and subsequent condensation.

In situ insertion of copper to form heteroanionic D3h-symmetric [Cu3Mo8O32]10- for a templated Ag55 nanocluster

A polyoxometalate-templated thiolate-protected silver nanocluster, [Cu₃(Mo₄O₁₆)₂@Ag₅₅(CyhS)₄₃(CH₃O)(COOCF₃)]·3H₂O, has been isolated under solvothermal conditions. In situ insertion of three Cu²⁺ ions into two polymolybdate anions generated a new, sandwich-type D_3h-symmetric [Cu₃(Mo₄O₁₆)₂]^10- polyoxoanion template encapsulated into an Ag₅₅(CyhS)₄₃ shell. The structure and composition of this Ag nanocluster have been fully characterized. This work has provided a new way to develop high-nuclearity metal nanoclusters with various structures.

Stepwise Assembly of Ag42 Nanocalices Based on a MoVI-Anchored Thiacalix[4]arene Metalloligand

Metalloligand strategy has been well recognized in the syntheses of heterometallic coordination polymers; however, such a strategy used in the assembly of silver nanoclusters is not broadly available. Herein, we report the stepwise syntheses of a family of halogen-templated Ag₄₂ nanoclusters (Ag42c-Ag42f) based on Mo^VI-anchored p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H₄TC4A) as a metalloligand (hereafter named MoO₃-TC4A). X-ray crystallography demonstrates that they are similar C₃-symmetric silver-organic nanocalices capped by six MoO₃-TC4A metalloligands, which are evenly distributed up and down the base of 42 silver atoms. These nanoclusters can be disassembled to six bowl-shaped [Ag₁₁(MoO₃-TC4A)(RS)₃] secondary building units (SBUs, R = Et or ⁿPr), which are fused together in a face-sharing fashion surrounding Cl^- or Br^- as a central anion template. The electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) indicates their high stabilities in solution and verifies the formation of the MoO₃-TC4A metalloligand, thereby rationalizing the overall stepwise assembly process for them. Moreover, Ag42c shows lower cytotoxicity and better activity against the HepG-2 cell line than MCF-7 and BGC-823. These results not only exemplify the effectiveness of a thiacalix[4]arene-based metalloligand in the assembly of silver nanoclusters but also give us profound insight about the step-by-step assembly process in silver nanoclusters.

Structure Determination of the Cl-Enriched [Ag52(SAdm)31Cl13]2+ Nanocluster

Cl atoms can serve as the innermost core, the peripheral ligand, or the counterions of metal nanoclusters. Herein, we report the structural determination a Cl-enriched [Ag₅₂(SAdm)₃₁Cl₁₃]²⁺. The ratio of Cl to AdmSH is quite high compared to those of other nanoclusters. Structurally, nine Cl atoms, existing at the interlayer of the inner kernel and the surface motif, serve as the bridging ligands to sustain the robustness of the whole structure. Interestingly, four Cl atoms on the motif structure can be substituted by Br. This work allows us to clear the regulation of Cl ligands in the structural construction of metal nanoclusters.

A comparative study of [Ag11(iPrS)9(dppb)3]2+ and [Ag15S(sBuS)12(dppb)3]+: templating effect on structure and photoluminescence

Atomically precise silver clusters with tunable photoluminescence (PL) properties have attracted extensive attention due to their great value for basic science and future applications. Here, we report that the addition of a sulfido template into a triangular thiolated silver cluster [Ag11(iPrS)9(dppb)3]·2CF3SO3·CH3OH (Ag11, dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane), which is emissive at 660 nm under ambient conditions, produced another silver cluster [S@Ag15(sBuS)12(dppb)3]·CF3SO3·H2O (Ag15) that displays 716 nm emission with a 56 nm redshift aided by the ligand sec-butyl mercaptan. The sulfido template, which affects the geometrical and electronic structures, results in a redshift of Ag11 room-temperature PL as a result of opening up the template-to-metal charge transfer (TMCT) and disturbing the electronic transition between the metal core and ligands at the periphery.

tert-Butyl thiol and pyridine ligand co-protected 50-nuclei clusters: the effect of pyridines on Ag-SR bonds

Constructing silver(i)-thiolate clusters from simple building blocks usually involves elusive self-assembly processes and remains a long-standing challenge. In this work, we report 6 silver(i)-thiolate clusters protected by pyridines, namely, [Ag3(tBuS)2(Py)(NO3)]n (Py = pyridine) (1), [Ag10(tBuS)6(Py)6(CF3CO2)4]·3Py (2), [Ag12(iPrS)6(Py)8(NO3)6]·2H2O (3), Ag12(iPrS)6(Py)8(CF3CO2)6 (4), Ag12(iPrS)6(4-ap)6(NO3)6 (4-ap = 4-aminopyridine) (5), and [Ag50S13(tBuS)20(Py)12]·4BF4·4Py·4CH3OH·2H2O (6). Single-crystal X-ray crystallography analysis reveals that six clusters are constructed by four types of structural blocks, including the PyAg(tBuS)2 monomer, Py2Ag2(tBuS)2 dimer, Py3Ag3(tBuS)3 trimer and (4-ap)6Ag6(iPrS)6 hexamer. Notably, cluster 6 consists of a rhombic dodecahedron S@Ag14 kernel with 12 interstitial S2- atoms encapsulated by 8 μ4-tBuS- ligands, as well as six unique butterfly-like (Py)2Ag6(tBuS)2 staple motifs composed of a Py2Ag2(tBuS)2 dimer and four silver ions. Moreover, it is found that pyridine ligands have important influence on the construction of silver thiolate clusters and their Ag-SR bond lengths.

Stepwise Achievement of Circularly Polarized Luminescence on Atomically Precise Silver Clusters

The weakly coordinated anionic nitrate ligands in a centrosymmetric Ag20 cluster are replaced in a stepwise manner by chiral amino acids and two achiral luminescent sulfonic-group-containing ligands while nearly maintaining the original silver(I) cage structure. This surface engineering enables the atomically precise Ag20 clusters to exhibit the high-efficiency synergetic effects of chirality and fluorescence, producing rare circularly polarized luminescence among the metal clusters with a large dissymmetry factor of (|glum|) ≈ 5 × 10-3. This rational approach using joint functional ligands further opens a new avenue to diverse multifunctional metal clusters for promising applications.

A Keplerian Ag90 nest of Platonic and Archimedean polyhedra in different symmetry groups

Polyhedra are ubiquitous in chemistry, biology, mathematics and other disciplines. Coordination-driven self-assembly has created molecules mimicking Platonic, Archimedean and even Goldberg polyhedra, however, nesting multiple polyhedra in one cluster is challenging, not only for synthesis but also for determining the alignment of the polyhedra. Here, we synthesize a nested Ag₉₀ nanocluster under solvothermal condition. This pseudo-T_h symmetric Ag₉₀ ball contains three concentric Ag polyhedra with apparently incompatible symmetry. Specifically, the inner (Ag₆) and middle (Ag₂₄) shells are octahedral (O_h), an octahedron (a Platonic solid with six 3.3.3.3 vertices) and a truncated octahedron (an Archimedean solid with twenty-four 4.6.6 vertices), whereas the outer (Ag₆₀) shell is icosahedral (I_h), a rhombicosidodecahedron (an Archimedean solid with sixty 3.4.5.4 vertices). The Ag₉₀ nanocluster solves the apparent incompatibility with the most symmetric arrangement of 2- and 3-fold rotational axes, similar to the arrangement in the model called Kepler’s Kosmos, devised by the mathematician John Conway.

Nested polyhedra are compelling but incredibly complex synthetic targets in cluster chemistry. Here, the authors synthesize a Ag₉₀ nanocluster comprising three concentric polyhedra with apparently incompatible octahedral (O_h) and icosahedral (I_h) symmetry, a mathematical oddity that is solved by the shells’ symmetric arrangement around rotational 2- and 3-fold axes.

Synthesis and characterization of a nanocluster-based silver(i) tert-butylethynide compound with a large second-harmonic generation response

A new nanocluster-based silver(i) tert-butylethynide compound, namely, (tBuC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CAg)2(Ag4SiW12O40)(DMSO)6 (HT-1), has been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The two kinds of nanocluster synthons (a silver aggregate named [(tBuC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)2Ag6(DMSO)6] and a SiW12 polyoxoanion) are assembled into a three-dimensional coordination network, which has a non-centrosymmetric crystal lattice. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements reveal that HT-1 belongs to the phase-matchable class with a moderately strong SHG response of about 3 times that of the KH2PO4 (KDP) sample. HT-1 represents the first example of a Ag(i) alkynyl cluster compound with a SHG response. The present study not only extends the application fields of Ag(i) alkynyl clusters but also demonstrates a new paradigm for understanding the Ag(i) alkynyl structural chemistry.

A Polyoxochromate Templated 56-Nuclei Silver Nanocluster

Most of polyoxometallates (POMs) templated silver nanoclusters recorded so far are polyoxomolybdates and polyoxotungstates; however, as congeneric polyoxochromates, they are rarely observed in silver nanoclusters. Herein, a high-nuclearity polyoxochromate, (Cr^III₄Cr^VI₈O₃₆)^12-, is uncovered in a novel silver nanocluster (SD/Ag56a) as an anion template. The mixed-valent (Cr^III₄Cr^VI₈O₃₆)^12- consists of four edge-sharing Cr^IIIO₆ octahedra and eight Cr^VIO₄ tetrahedra, which are fused together by sharing one or two vertexes. The (Cr^III₄Cr^VI₈O₃₆)^12- is the by far highest nuclearity polyoxochromate and is trapped by outer Ag₅₆ bracelet-like shell coprotected by quaternary ligands including ⁱPrS^-, NapCOO^- (2-naphthalenecarboxylate), CF₃COO^-, and CH₃CN. The antiferromagnetic property and solution behavior of SD/Ag56a are discussed in detail.

A hierarchically assembled 88-nuclei silver-thiacalix[4]arene nanocluster

Thiacalix[4]arenes as a family of promising ligands have been widely used to construct polynuclear metal clusters, but scarcely employed in silver nanoclusters. Herein, an anion-templated Ag₈₈ nanocluster (SD/Ag88a) built from p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H₄TC4A) is reported. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that C₄-symmetric SD/Ag88a resembles a metal-organic super calix comprised of eight TC4A⁴⁻ as walls and 88 silver atoms as base, which can be deconstructed to eight [CrO₄@Ag₁₁(TC4A)(EtS)₄(OAc)] secondary building units arranged in an annulus encircling a CrO₄²⁻ in the center. Local and global anion template effects from chromates are individually manifested in SD/Ag88a. The solution stability and hierarchical assembly mechanism of SD/Ag88a are studied by using electrospray mass spectrometry. The Ag₈₈ nanocluster represents the highest nuclearity metal cluster capped by TC4A⁴⁻. This work not only exemplify the specific macrocyclic effects of TC4A⁴⁻ in the construction of silver nanocluster but also realize the shape heredity of TC4A⁴⁻ to overall silver super calix.

The assembly of giant silver clusters by using macrocylic multidentate ligand remains a challenge. Here, the authors synthesize a chromate-templated 88-nuclei silver super calix and reveal the role of anion templating effects and a hierarchical assembly mechanism.

A stably discrete 31-nuclearity silver(i) thiolate nanocluster luminescent thermometer supported by DMF auxiliary ligands

The stably discrete [Ag₃₁S₃(S^tBu)₁₇(CF₃COO)₇(CO₃)_0.5(CF₃COOH)_0.5(DMF)₄] nanocluster in Ag31S20-DMF (1) shaped in a turtle-like structure exhibits temperature-sensitive luminescence properties.

The Self-Assembly of [{Ag3(C≡CtBu)2}n]n+ Building Units into a Template-Free Cuboctahedron and Anion-Encapsulating Silver Cages

We describe the controlled synthesis of silver acetylide clusters based on a simple polymeric [Ag₃L₂]⁺ (L = -C≡C^tBu) building block. A linear one-dimensional polymeric structure shows alternating pyramidal motifs and is the basic repeating unit forming discrete molecular cages (pentamers [X⊂Ag₁₅L₁₀]⁴⁺ and hexamers [PF₆⊂Ag₁₈L₁₂]⁵⁺) obtained by incorporating suitable templates. These motifs and a rare template-free cuboctahedral [Ag₁₂L₈]⁴⁺ cluster (tetramer) were crystallographically characterized.

Facile synthesis of silver alkynide cluster and coordination polymers using picolinic acid as a co-ligand

We describe five 1D-coordination polymers and two discrete silver clusters consisting of alkynides and picolinic carboxylates as co-ligands. In some cases, DMSO or EtOH further solvated the structural motifs. Utilising the sterically demanding tri-isopropylsilyl acetylene afforded a tridecanuclear cluster that possessed an unprecedented core with a silver center surrounded by six octahedrally arranged silver atoms.
