Abstract
To facilitate the interaction between the health professional and the patient, a framework to guide the rehabilitation process is needed. This framework would encompass three interwoven aspects: the rehabilitation management plan, Individual Rehabilitation Project (IRP), and rehabilitation cycle(s). All three framework aspects focus on the patient and on the aim of rehabilitation, i.e. to optimize a person's functioning across the continuum of care. An IRP is a multi-element, person-centered rehabilitation management scheme, in which rehabilitation is generally provided by a multiprofessional team under the leadership of a physical and rehabilitation medicine (PRM) physician, working in an interdisciplinary manner and together with the patient (or proxy). A reference system for operationalizing functioning and standardizing the process is the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) - for assessing functioning needs, defining rehabilitation goals and outcomes. The objective of this paper is to present the IRP as a framework for rehabilitation in Europe (EUR-IRP). The specific aims are: 1) to introduce the IRP; and 2) to describe the framework components, elements and variables of the IRP. Demonstration projects (case studies) using the EUR-IRP will be conducted. The present paper presents the efforts to date for developing the EUR-IRP, a key part of the action plan of the PRM Section and Board of the European Union of Medical Specialists to implement the ICF systemwide across the care continuum. This paper serves as another step to bring together practice, science and governance in calling for contribution from rehabilitation clinicians and researchers and professional societies in PRM and beyond.

Abstract
The assessment of work-related functioning is a key process in vocational rehabilitation to identify specific domains of disability that can be considered within return to work strategies. The Work Rehabilitation Questionnaire (WORQ) was developed to evaluate work-related functioning based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework and is available in different languages. The aim of this study was to assess the French version of the WORQ using item response theory to further validate the scale. Rasch analysis of WORQ and the WORQ-BRIEF (a brief version of the WORQ) was performed using a calibration sample of 221 persons with musculoskeletal injuries. A four-testlet solution indicated the unidimensionality of WORQ, with no differential item functioning for age, education, physical job demands, and injury severity. Reliability was 0.969 and 0.918 for WORQ and WORQ-BRIEF, respectively. The minimal detectable change was calculated to be 4.2% of its operational range for WORQ and 8.5% for WORQ-BRIEF. Consequently, the French version of WORQ can be considered a good measure of work-related functioning in musculoskeletal conditions. WORQ can be used in rehabilitation practice to comprehensively identify the disability and guide clinical decision making and intervention planning. Further studies are needed to evaluate the psychometric properties of WORQ in other health conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral health is related to major chronic diseases and contributes to general health. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is, therefore, an essential part of well-being. Measurement of OHRQoL over the lifetime requires accurate and comparable outcome measures that are suitable for different age groups. The most frequently used instrument for children aged 11 through 14 years is the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ-11-14). The authors aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the CPQ-11-14 using modern statistical approaches. METHODS The authors carried out a psychometric analysis of 2 population-representative data sets from Germany (N = 2,658) and a randomly selected smaller sample (n = 300) on the basis of the Rasch model. RESULTS The authors detected a right-skewed distribution of the CPQ-11-14 total scores. The instrument items did not match the level of OHRQoL of the study participants. Moreover, a large number of questionnaire items (range, 51.4%-94.3%) had so-called disordered thresholds, meaning that the answer categories did not work as intended. Unidimensionality was achieved via splitting the CPQ-11-14 into 2 subscales, namely socioemotional and oral symptoms and functioning. CONCLUSIONS Despite its classic validation, the CPQ-11-14 needs adaptions for meaningful clinical use. More items on the better end of the scale are needed to better differentiate between children with higher and lower OHRQoL. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The Rasch model addresses psychometric properties of questionnaires on an item-based level, which were not detected via classic approaches. The results reported by the authors are needed to generate a well-calibrated outcome measure for accurate clinical and public health assessment of OHRQoL.

Abstract
The Graded and Redefined Assessment of Strength, Sensibility and Prehension (GRASSP) is a valid, reliable, and responsive outcome measure to evaluate upper limb function in individuals with tetraplegia. GRASSP generates ordinal total scores; therefore, applicability as an interval level measurement requires testing of its measurement properties. This study examined the metric characteristics with Rasch Analysis to derive interval level scales of the respective GRASSP subtests. The GRASSP was recorded within 10 days, and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). Rasch analysis was performed for each GRASSP subscale to assess the following metric assumptions: absence of local item dependency (LID), unidimensionality, monotonicity, item and model fit, reliability, and absence of differential item functioning (DIF) for side (left and right) and examination stage. If these assumptions could not be met, adjustments were undertaken to achieve a good fit to the Rasch model. Seventy-seven individuals with cervical SCI were included (n = 154 arms). Stacking the data for the side (left and right) resulted in a total of 614 observations, which were based on the repeated measurements. With minor adjustments, the GRASSP subscales showed good reliability, item fit, and ordered response options. Local item dependencies were found in the strength and sensibility subscales. Redundancies among some measurement items allowed shortening of the subscales without reasonable loss of reliability. Absence of DIF for the examination stage supported robustness of the subscales over time. The modified GRASSP, now Version 2, subtest scores can be applied as interval level measurements, and the reduction of items within subscales allows for shorter assessment times in clinical studies without degrading metric properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of hand osteoarthritis (HOA) has been reported to be higher amongst women over 50 years old (66%) compared to men of the same age (34%). Although exercise therapy has been shown effective in reducing symptoms and disability associated with HOA, adherence to treatment programs remains low. The primary objective of this RCT is to examine the effectiveness of a 12-week knitting program for morning stiffness (primary outcome) and pain relief (secondary outcome) 2 h post-wakening in females (aged 50 to 85 years old) with mild to moderate hand osteoarthritis (HOA). METHODS/DESIGN A single-blind, two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) with a parallel group design will be used to reach this objective and compare results to a control group receiving an educational pamphlet on osteoarththritis (OA) designed by the Arthritis Society. The premise behind the knitting program is to use a meaningful occupation as the main component of an exercise program. The knitting program will include two components: 1) bi-weekly 20-min knitting sessions at a senior's club and 2) 20-min home daily knitting sessions for the five remaining weekdays. Participants assigned to the control group will be encouraged to read the educational pamphlet and continue with usual routine. Pain, morning stiffness, hand function, self-efficacy and quality of life will be measured at baseline, six weeks, 12 weeks (end of program) with standardized tools. We hypothesize that participants in the knitting program will have significant improvements in all clinical outcomes compared to the control group. A published case study as well as the preliminary results of a feasibility study as examined through a 6-week pre-post study (n = 5 women with HOA) involving 20-min daily knitting morning sessions led to this proposed randomized controlled trial research protocol. This article describes the intervention, the empirical evidence to support it. DISCUSSION This knitting RCT has the potential to enhance our understanding of the daily HOA symptoms control and exercise adherence, refine functional exercise recommendations in this prevalent disease, and reduce the burden of disability in older women. Abstract
Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare heterogenous condition that causes progressive suppurative lung disease, chronic rhinosinusitis, chronic otitis media, infertility and abnormal situs. 'Better Experimental Approaches to Treat Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia' (BEAT-PCD) is a network of scientists and clinicians coordinating research from basic science through to clinical care with the intention of developing treatments and diagnostics that lead to improved long-term outcomes for patients. BEAT-PCD activities are supported by EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020 funded COST Action (BM1407). The Inaugural Conference of BEAT-PCD was held in December 2015 in Southampton, UK. The conference attracted ninety-six scientists, clinicians, allied health professionals, industrial partners and patient representatives from twenty countries. We aimed to identify the needs for PCD research and clinical care, particularly focussing on basic science, epidemiology, diagnostic testing, clinical management and clinical trials. The multidisciplinary conference provided an interactive platform for exchanging ideas through a program of lectures, poster presentations, breakout sessions and workshops. This allowed us to develop plans for collaborative studies. In this report, we summarize the meeting, highlight developments, and discuss open questions thereby documenting ongoing developments in the field of PCD research.
