Abstract
Bacteria share a longstanding and complex relationship with humans, playing a role in protecting gut health and sustaining the ecosystem to cause infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance. Luminogenic materials that share aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics have emerged as a versatile toolbox for bacterial studies through fluorescence visualization. Numerous research efforts highlight the superiority of AIE materials in this field. Recent advances in AIE materials in bacterial studies are categorized into four areas: understanding bacterial interactions, antibacterial strategies, diverse applications, and synergistic applications with bacteria. Initial research focuses on visualizing the unseen bacteria and progresses into developing strategies involving electrostatic interactions, amphiphilic AIE luminogens (AIEgens), and various AIE materials to enhance bacterial affinity. Recent progress in antibacterial strategies includes using photodynamic and photothermal therapies, bacterial toxicity studies, and combined therapies. Diverse applications from environmental disinfection to disease treatment, utilizing AIE materials in antibacterial coatings, bacterial sensors, wound healing materials, etc., are also provided. Finally, synergistic applications combining AIE materials with bacteria to achieve enhanced outcomes are explored. This review summarizes the developmental trend of AIE materials in bacterial studies and is expected to provide future research directions in advancing bacterial methodologies.

Abstract
Light has profoundly impacted modern medicine and healthcare, with numerous luminescent agents and imaging techniques currently being used to assess health and treat diseases. As an emerging concept in luminescence, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has shown great potential in biological applications due to its advantages in terms of brightness, biocompatibility, photostability, and positive correlation with concentration. This review provides a comprehensive summary of AIE luminogens applied in imaging of biological structure and dynamic physiological processes, disease diagnosis and treatment, and detection and monitoring of specific analytes, followed by representative works. Discussions on critical issues and perspectives on future directions are also included. This review aims to stimulate the interest of researchers from different fields, including chemistry, biology, materials science, medicine, etc., thus promoting the development of AIE in the fields of life and health.

Abstract
Microbial pathogens, including bacteria, fungi and viruses, greatly threaten the global public health. For pathogen infections, early diagnosis and precise treatment are essential to cut the mortality rate. The emergence of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) biomaterials provides an effective and promising tool for the theranostics of pathogen infections. In this review, the recent advances about AIE biomaterials for anti-pathogen theranostics are summarized. With the excellent sensitivity and photostability, AIE biomaterials have been widely applied for precise diagnosis of pathogens. Besides, different types of anti-pathogen methods based on AIE biomaterials will be presented in detail, including chemotherapy and phototherapy. Finally, the existing deficiencies and future development of AIE biomaterials for anti-pathogen applications will be discussed.

Abstract
Bacterial infections have posed significant threats to public health due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance. In this work, a novel antibacterial composite nanomaterial based on spiky mesoporous silica spheres loaded with poly(ionic liquid)s and aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) was designed for efficient multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria treatment and imaging. The nanocomposite exhibited excellent and long-term antibacterial activity towards both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Meanwhile, fluorescent AIEgens facilitate real-time bacterial imaging. Our study provides a multifunctional platform and a promising alternative to antibiotics for combating pathogenic MDR bacteria.

Abstract
Noncancerous diseases include a wide plethora of medical conditions beyond cancer and are a major cause of mortality around the world. Despite progresses in clinical research, many puzzles about these diseases remain unanswered, and new therapies are continuously being sought. The evolution of bio-nanomedicine has enabled huge advancements in biosensing, diagnosis, bioimaging, and therapeutics. The recent development of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) has provided an impetus to the field of molecular bionanomaterials. Following aggregation, AIEgens show strong emission, overcoming the problems associated with the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect. They also have other unique properties, including low background interferences, high signal-to-noise ratios, photostability, and excellent biocompatibility, along with activatable aggregation-enhanced theranostic effects, which help them achieve excellent therapeutic effects as an one-for-all multimodal theranostic platform. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the overall progresses in AIEgen-based nanoplatforms for the detection, diagnosis, bioimaging, and bioimaging-guided treatment of noncancerous diseases. In addition, it details future perspectives and the potential clinical applications of these AIEgens in noncancerous diseases are also proposed. This review hopes to motivate further interest in this topic and promote ideation for the further exploration of more advanced AIEgens in a broad range of biomedical and clinical applications in patients with noncancerous diseases.

Abstract
Rapid and accurate differentiation between live and dead cells is highly desirable for the evaluation of cell viability. Here, we report the application of the orange-emitting sulfur-doped organosilica nanodots (S-OSiNDs) for ultrafast (30 s), ultrasensitive (1 μg/mL), and universal staining of the dead bacterial, fungal, and mammalian cells but not the live ones, which satisfies the requirements of a fluorescent probe that can specifically stain the dead cells. We further verify that the fluorescence distribution range of S-OSiNDs (which are distributed in cytoplasm and nucleus) is much larger than that of the commercial dead/fixed cell/tissue staining dye RedDot2 (which is distributed in the nucleus) in terms of dead mammalian cell staining, indicating that S-OSiNDs possess a better staining effect of dead cells than RedDot2. Overall, S-OSiNDs can be used as a robust fluorescent probe for ultrafast and accurate discrimination between dead and live cells at a single cell level, which may find a variety of applications in the biomedical field.

Abstract
Close to half of human cancers harbor point mutations in the tumor-suppressor p53 gene, giving rise to the cellular accumulation of mutant p53 (mutp53) proteins with novel neomorphic gain-of-function (GOF) properties. The destruction of mutp53 proteins through either autophagic or proteasomal degradation is a viable strategy for the targeted therapy of p53-mutated cancers. Several nanomaterials, including zinc-iron and ZIF-8 nanoparticles (NPs), have been reported to induce the proteasomal degradation of mutp53 proteins. However, how autophagy, the other major cellular degradative pathway, influences NP-induced mutp53 degradation has not been investigated. This article shows that AIE-Mit-TPP, a mitochondria-targeting material with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics, elicits ubiquitination-dependent proteasomal degradation of a broad range of mutp53 proteins. Meanwhile, AIE-Mit-TPP also induces massive mitochondrial damage and autophagy. The inhibition of autophagy further increases AIE-Mit-TPP-elicited mutp53 degradation, revealing the negative impact of autophagy on AIE-Mit-TPP-induced mutp53 degradation. As expected, the degradation of mutp53 proteins by AIE-Mit-TPP abrogated mutp53-manifested GOF, leading to reductions in cell proliferation and migration and increases in cell cycle arrest and cell death. Consequently, AIE-Mit-TPP inhibited the growth of mutp53 tumors. This paper unravels the interesting interplay between the proteasomal and autophagic degradative pathways and pinpoints the modulation of autophagy as a potential strategy for optimizing NP-induced mutp53 degradation and p53-targeted cancer therapy. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: We have designed three different types of AIE materials: non-targeting (AIE-Br), mitochondria-targeting (AIE-Mit-TPP), lysosome-targeting (AIE-Lyso). Our results proved that mitochondria-targeting AIE material induced degradation of mutp53 proteins via the proteasome degradation pathway and abrogated mutp53-conferred GOF phenotypes. Furthermore, we performed in vitro studies on the effect of the tested materials in mutp53-expressing cancer cells and demonstrated our findings via in vivo investigations in a mouse subcutaneous p53R175H TOV112D ovarian cancer model. Our results confirmed the link between the proteasome pathway and autophagy and thus proposed a strategy of combining AIE-Mit-TPP with autophagy inhibitors for the targeted treatment of mutp53-associated tumors. Finally, we found that AIE-Mit-TPP could induce degradation of a wide-spectrum mutp53 proteins, which makes mitochondria-targeting AIE materials an effective therapeutic strategy for p53-mutated cancers.

Abstract
The efficacious delivery of antimicrobial drugs to intractable oral biofilms remains a challenge due to inadequate biofilm penetration and lack of pathogen targeting. Herein, we have developed a microenvironment-activated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-sheddable nanoplatform to mediate targeted delivery of drugs into oral biofilms for the efficient prevention of dental caries. The PEGylated nanoplatform with enhanced biofilm penetration is capable of deshielding the PEG layer under slightly acidic conditions in a PEG chain length-dependent manner to re-expose the bacteria-targeting ligands, thereby facilitating targeted codelivery of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and IR780 to the bacteria after accumulation within biofilms. The nanoplatform tends to induce bacterial agglomeration and suffers from degradation in the acidic oral biofilm microenvironment, triggering rapid drug release on demand around bacterial cells. The self-modulating nanoplatform under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation accordingly displays greatly augmented potency in oral biofilm penetration and disruption compared with drugs alone. Topical oral treatment with nanoplatforms involving synergetic pharmacological and photothermal/photodynamic trinary therapy results in robust biofilm dispersion and efficacious suppression of severe tooth decay in rats. This versatile nanoplatform can promote local accumulation and specific drug transport into biofilms and represents a new paradigm for targeted drug delivery for the management of oral biofilm-associated infections.

Abstract
AbstractPhagocytosis is a biological process that plays a key role in host defense and tissue homeostasis. Efficient approaches for realtime imaging of phagocytosis are highly desired but limited. Herein, an AIE-active near-infrared fluorescent probe, named TBTCP, was developed for fluorescence lifetime imaging of phagocytosis. TBTCP could selectively label the cell plasma membrane with fast staining, wash-free process, high signal-to-background ratio, and excellent photostability. Cellular membrane statuses under different osmolarities as well as macrophage phagocytosis of bacteria or large silica particles in early stages could be reported by the fluorescence lifetime changes of TBTCP. Compared with current fluorescence imaging methods, which target the bioenvironmental changes in the late phagocytosis stage, this approach detects the changes in the cell membrane, thus giving a faster response to phagocytosis. This article provides a functional tool to report the phagocytic dynamics of macrophages which may greatly contribute to the studies of phagocytic function-related diseases.

Abstract
The current study describes a new technology, effective for readily preparing a fluorescent (FL) nanoprobe-based on hyperbranched polymer (HB) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorogen with high brightness to ultimately develop FL hydrogels. We prepared the AIE nanoprobe using a microfluidic platform to mix hyperbranched polymers (HB, generations 2, 3, and 4) with AIE (TPE-2BA) under shear stress and different rotation speeds (0-5 K RPM) and explored the FL properties of the AIE nanoprobe. Our results reveal that the use of HB generation 4 exhibits 30-times higher FL intensity compared to the AIE alone and is significantly brighter and more stable compared to those that are prepared using HB generations 3 and 2. In contrast to traditional methods, which are expensive and time-consuming and involve polymerization and post-functionalization to develop FL hyperbranched molecules, our proposed method offers a one-step method to prepare an AIE-HB nanoprobe with excellent FL characteristics. We employed the nanoprobe to fabricate fluorescent injectable bioadhesive gel and a hydrogel microchip based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The addition of borax (50 mM) to the PVA + AIE nanoprobe results in the development of an injectable bioadhesive fluorescent gel with the ability to control AIEgen release for 300 min. When borax concentration increases two times (100 mM), the adhesion stress is more than two times bigger (7.1 mN/mm2) compared to that of gel alone (3.4 mN/mm2). Excellent dimensional stability and cell viability of the fluorescent microchip, along with its enhanced mechanical properties, proposes its potential applications in mechanobiology and understanding the impact of microstructure in cell studies.

Abstract
AbstractAggregation‐induced emission (AIE) is a photophysical phenomenon that a certain group of luminescent materials that become highly luminous when aggregated in a bad solvent or solid state. This year is the 20th anniversary since the AIE concept firstly proposed in 2001. Many advanced applications were gradually being explored, covering optics, electronics, energy, and bioscience and so on. At present, bibliometrics can enlighten the researchers with comprehensive sights of the achievements and trends of a specific field, which is critical for academic investigations. Herein, we presented a general bibliometric overview of AIE covering 20 years of evolution. With the assistance of Web of Science Core Collection database and several bibliometric software tools, the annual publication and citation, most influential countries/regions, most contributing authors, journals and institutions, second near‐infrared (NIR‐II) related hotspots, as well as the forecast of frontiers were demonstrated and systematically analyzed. This study summarizes the current research status in AIE research field and provides a reference for future research directions.

Abstract
Fluorescent organic dyes have been extensively used as raw materials for the development of versatile imaging tools in the field of biomedicine. Particularly, the development of solid-state organic fluorophores (SSOFs) in the past 20 years has exhibited an upward trend. In recent years, studies on SSOFs have focused on the development of advanced tools, such as optical contrast agents and phototherapy agents, for biomedical applications. However, the practical application of these tools has been hindered owing to several limitations. Thus, in this Perspective, we have provided insights that could aid researchers to further develop these tools and overcome the limitations such as limited aqueous dispersibility, low biocompatibility, and uncontrolled emission. First, we described the inherent photophysical properties and fluorescence mechanisms of conventional, aggregation-induced emissive, and precipitating SSOFs with respect to their biomedical applications. Subsequently, we highlighted the recent development of functionalized SSOFs for bioimaging, biosensing, and theranostics. Finally, we elucidated the potential prospects and limitations of current SSOF-based tools associated with biomedical applications.

Abstract
The prevention and control of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses is a herculean task for all the countries since they greatly threaten global public health. Rapid detection and effective elimination of these pathogens is crucial for the treatment of related diseases. It is urgently demanded to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to combat bacteria, fungi, and viruses-induced infections. The emergence of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens (AIEgens) is a revolutionary breakthrough for the treatment of many diseases, including pathogenic infections. In this review, the main focus is on the applications of AIEgens for theranostic treatment of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Due to the AIE characteristic, AIEgens are promising fluorescent probes for the detection of bacteria, fungi, and viruses with excellent sensitivity and photostability. Moreover, AIEgen-based theranostic platforms can be fabricated by introducing bactericidal moieties or designing AIE photosensitizers and AIE photothermal agents. The current strategies and ongoing developments of AIEgens for the treatment of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses will be discussed in detail.

Abstract
Accurate and sensitive diagnosis of pathogenic bacterial infection is a fundamental first step for correct bacteria management, helping to avoid the development of drug-resistant bacteria caused by the inappropriate use and overuse of antibiotics. Fluorescence probes as a promising visual tool can help identify pathogens rapidly and reliably. However, rigidly structured traditional fluorescence probes generally suffer from the drawback of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, which greatly undermines their advantages with respect to sensitivity. Luminogens with aggregation-induced emission properties, namely AIEgens, can overcome the ACQ effect and certain AIEgen-based materials are capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the aggregate states. Hence, they have become powerful tools for imaging and killing bacteria. This review summarizes the recent advances in AIEgens for the diagnosis and treatment of pathogen infections. Special attention has been paid to the molecular design, the application in bacterial imaging and ablation in vitro and in vivo, and the biocompatibility of AIEgens. Finally, the challenges and prospects are discussed in terms of using AIEgens to advance precision therapies for pathogen infections.

Abstract
In the current study, the active flavonoids from Apocynum venetum and Apocynum hendersonii leaf were efficiently characterized using UPLC-ESI-MS/MS, and yielding the highest content of 15.35 mg/g (A. venetum) and 13.28 mg/g (A. hendersonii) respectively. The antioxidant assay in vitro showed that the isolated flavonoid ingredient groups exhibited free radical scavenging activities to DPPH, ABTS and linoleic acid. The antimicrobial assay revealed the isolated flavonoid ingredient from both A. venetum and A. hendorsonii have exerted anti-MRSA and anti-P. aeruginosa effect through disrupting cell integrity and declining ATP. In vivo assay demonstrated that these flavonoid ingredients effectively accelerated MRSA-infected and P. aeruginosa-infected Balb/c mice wound healing. In summary, these results showed that the characterized flavonoid ingredients exhibited great potential as natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agents, and shed light into future potential applications of Apocynum spp.

Abstract
Combining rapid microbial discrimination with antibacterial properties, multi-functional biomacromolecules allow the timely diagnosis and effective treatment of infectious diseases. Through a two-step approach involving organocatalytic ring-opening copolymerization and thiol-ene modification, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) polycarbonates decorated with tertiary amines were prepared. After being ionized using acetic acid, the obtained cationic AIE polycarbonate with excellent water solubility showed bacteria imaging capabilities and antibacterial activities toward both Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli. It was indicated via scanning electron microscope images that the bactericidal mechanism involved membrane lysis, consistent with most cationic polymers. Through further co-grafting carboxyl and tertiary amine groups, mixed-charge AIE polycarbonates were obtained. The isoelectric points of such mixed-charge AIE polycarbonates could be simply tuned based on the grafting ratio of positive and negative moieties. Compared with the cationic AIE polycarbonate, mixed-charge AIE polycarbonates allowed the rapid and selective imaging of S. aureus, but not E. coli. The selectivity probably arose from the lower binding forces between the mixed-charge AIE polycarbonates and the low-negative-charge components of the E. coli surface. Therefore, these biodegradable polycarbonates, which integrated selective bacteria imaging and antibiotic abilities, potentially suggest a precision medicine approach for infectious diseases. The overall synthesis approach and mixed-charge AIE polycarbonates provide new references for the design and application of bio-related AIE polymers.

Abstract
The lack of rapid and reliable microbial detection and sensing platforms and insufficient understanding of microbial behavior may delay precautions that could be made, which is a great threat to human life and increases the heavy financial burden on society. In this contribution, a dual-aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) system is successfully developed for microbial imaging and metabolic status sensing. This system consists of two AIEgens (DCQA and TPE-2BA) that bear positively charged groups or boronic acid groups, providing universal microbial staining ability and specific affinity for dead microbes, respectively. Based on the distinctive fluorescence response produced by the diverse interaction of AIEgens with live or dead microbes, this dual-AIEgen system can detect all the microbes and identify their viabilities. Furthermore, the morphology and metabolic status of a sessile biofilm can also be imaged and monitored. The system exhibits rapid labelling properties that suitable for various microbes, and good biocompatibilities.

Abstract
Cationic glycopolymers with structures similar to those of typical poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) were synthesized via the quaternization reaction of poly(4-vinyl pyridine) with halogen-functionalized d-mannose and tetraphenylethylene units. Such postpolymerization modification provided PILs with aggregation-induced emission effect as well as specific carbohydrate-protein recognition with lectins such as concanavalin A. The interactions between cationic glycopolymers and different microorganisms, including Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli, were used for the killing, imaging, and detection of bacteria. Besides, these sugar-containing PILs showed a relatively low hemolysis rate due to the presence of saccharide units, which may have potential application in the field of biomaterials.

Abstract
Microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, are ubiquitous in nature. Some are extremely beneficial to life on Earth, whereas some cause diseases and disrupt normal human physiology. Pathogenic microorganisms can also undergo mutations and develop resistance to antimicrobial agents, which complicates diagnostic and therapeutic regimens. This calls for continuing efforts to develop new strategies and tools that can provide fast, sensitive and accurate diagnosis, as well as effective treatment of ever-evolving infectious diseases. Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have shown promise in imaging, identification and inhibition of various microbial species. Compared to conventional organic fluorophores, AIEgens can offer improved photostability, and have found utilities in imaging microorganisms. AIEgens have been shown to detect microbial viability and differentiate among different microbial strains. Theranostic AIEgens that integrate imaging and killing of microbes have also been developed. This review highlights examples in the literature where AIEgens have been employed as molecular probes in the imaging, discrimination and killing of bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Abstract
The emergence and spread of pathogenic bacteria, particularly antibiotic-resistant strains pose grave global concerns worldwide, which demand for the rapid development of highly selective and sensitive strategies for specific bacterial detection, identification, imaging and therapy. The fascinating feature of aggregation-induced emissive molecules (AIEgens) to display fluorescence in aggregate form can be suitably coupled with nanotechnology for developing theranostic AIE dots that can offer convenient and customised functions such as sensing, imaging, detection, discrimination and cell kill of different bacterial types. The initial section of the article reveals the necessity for incorporating diagnostic imaging with antibacterial therapy, while the latter part delivers mechanistic insights on the benefits of AIE fluorophores in theranostic applications. Further, the review illustrates the recent advancements of AIEgens as theranostic nanolights in bacterial detection, identification and eradication. The review is organised according to the different classes of AIE-active bacterial theranostics such as carrier-free nanoprodrugs, nanomachines for synergistic imaging-guided cancer treatment and bacterial kill, AIE polymers, bioconjugates and nanoparticle carriers. Abstract
The introduction of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) moieties into polymers results in smart materials with AIE characteristics, expanding their scope of applications. Herein, well-defined polymers with controlled molecular weight, low dispersity, and high end-group fidelity are produced via copper(0)-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerizations (Cu(0)-RDRPs). An AIE-containing initiator tetraphenylethene bromoisobutyrate (TPEBIB) has been synthesized, fully characterized, and utilized for the construction of different polyacrylate homopolymers and block copolymers bearing the TPE group with a range of molecular weights and architectures. All of the polymers exhibited AIE behavior. Notably, the hydrophobic TPE-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (TPE-PtBA)-containing block copolymers are transformed to TPE-poly(acrylic acid) (TPE-PAA)-based amphiphilic copolymers by facile deprotection, enabling pH-tunable self-assembly in aqueous media to give fluorescent nanoparticles with various sizes. The low cytotoxicity, high specificity, and excellent photostability render them promising candidates as lysosome-specific probes in biological imaging applications.

Abstract
The host-guest interaction approach, specifically via the formation of hydrogen bonds, is an effective strategy for preparing luminescent hyper-branched polymers. The challenge here is how to optimize the binding strength and particle size to tune fluorescence properties. The aim of the current study was to optimize the guest (aggregation-induced emission molecule, AIE)-host (hyper-branched polymer, HBP) interaction in the development of an HBP/AIE complex (AIE-HBP) with tunable luminescence properties via the formation of strong hydrogen bonds. Overall, a simple one-step method for the preparation of AIE-HBP was demonstrated. The method was based on the formation of hydrogen bonds among AIE molecules and HBP molecules, resulting in the development of a stable AIE-polymer complex. Compared to other techniques (direct polymerization or post-functionalization), the proposed technique was much simpler. The fluorescence properties of AIE-HBP were significantly enhanced compared to AIE alone and could be tuned during the formation of AIE-HBP by using a novel vortex fluidic device (VFD). The as-prepared AIE-HBP can be used to simultaneously enhance the mechanical properties of hydrogels while increasing the fluorescence properties.

Abstract
Precise design of fluorescent molecules with desired properties has enabled the rapid development of many research fields. Among the different types of optically active materials, luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) have attracted significant interest over the past two decades. The negligible luminescence of AIEgens as a molecular species and high brightness in aggregate states distinguish them from conventional fluorescent dyes, which has galvanized efforts to bring AIEgens to a wide array of multidisciplinary applications. Herein, the useful principles and emerging structure-property relationships for precise molecular design toward AIEgens with desirable properties using concrete examples are revealed. The cutting-edge applications of AIEgens and their excellent performance in enabling new research directions in biomedical theranostics, optoelectronic devices, stimuli-responsive smart materials, and visualization of physical processes are also highlighted.

Abstract
A series of aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-based imidazolium-type ionic liquids (ILs) were designed and synthesized for bacterial killing and imaging, cell labeling, and bacterial detection in blood cells. The AIE-based ILs showed antibacterial activities against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The carbon chain length of substitution at the N3 position of the imidazolium cations highly affects the antibacterial properties of ILs. Owing to their AIE characteristics, the ILs could selectively capture fluorescence image of dead bacteria while killing the bacteria. The fluorescence intensity varied with the concentration of bacteria, indicating that AIE-based ILs has potential as an antibacterial material and an efficient probe for bacterial viability assay. In addition, the synthesized AIE-based ILs exhibit relatively low cytotoxicity and hemolysis rate and therefore potential for cell labeling, as well as bacterial detection in blood cells. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Bacteria are ubiquitous, especially the pathogenic bacteria, which pose a serious threat to human health. There is an urgent need for materials with efficient antibacterial properties and biocompatibility and without causing drug resistance. In this work, we synthesized a series of aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-doped imidazolium type ionic liquids (ILs) with multifunction potential of bacterial killing and imaging, cell labeling, and detection of bacteria from blood cells. The synthesized AIE-based ILs can image dead bacteria at the same time of killing these bacteria, which can avoid the fluorescent dyeing process. Simultaneously, the fluorescent imaging of dead bacteria can be distinguished by the naked eye, and the fluorescence intensity from the AIE-based ILs varied with the concentration of bacteria. In addition, the AIE-based ILs exhibit relatively low cytotoxicity and hemolysis rate and therefore potential for cell labeling as well as detection of bacteria from red blood cell suspension.

Abstract
The prevention of bacteria-induced infections has been increasing in importance in both clinical surgery and biomedical engineering. Although great attention has been paid to designing intelligent antibacterial surfaces, the fabrication processes are still not facile and universal enough, and the antibacterial efficiencies of these surfaces are also not ideal. Herein, ionic liquid (IL) molecules of 3-(12-mercaptododecyl)-1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide (IL(Br)) were synthesized with the minimum inhibitory concentrations as low as 4 and 8 μg mL-1 against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), respectively. By simply immersing a polymeric substrate into the IL(Br) solution, an antibacterial surface with high killing efficiency of 99% against S. aureus (94% against E. coli) was achieved via a mussel-inspired approach. Subsequently, 97% S. aureus and 95% E. coli on the substrate could be released by simple ion-exchange of Br- with (CF3SO2)2N- due to the ion sensitivity of the IL molecular brushes. Thus, the proposed facile strategy towards a superior efficiency surface could be potentially used in intelligent antibacterial fields.

Abstract
The emergence of multidrug resistant bacterial strains has hastened the exploration of advanced microbicides and antibacterial techniques. Photodynamic antibacterial therapy (PDAT), an old-fashioned technique, has been rejuvenated to combat "superbugs" and biofilm-associated infections owing to its excellent characteristics of noninvasiveness and broad antibacterial spectrum. More importantly, bacteria are less likely to produce drug resistance to PDAT because it does not require specific targeting interaction between photosensitizers (PSs) and bacteria. This review mainly focuses on recent developments and future prospects of PDAT. The mechanisms of PDAT against bacteria and biofilms are briefly introduced. In addition to classical macrocyclic PSs, several innovative PSs, including non-self-quenching PSs, conjugated polymer-based PSs, and nano-PSs, are summarized in detail. Numerous multifunctional PDAT systems such as in situ light-activated PDAT, stimuli-responsive PDAT, oxygen self-enriching enhanced PDAT, and PDAT-based multimodal therapy are highlighted to overcome the inherent defects of PDAT in vivo (e.g., limited penetration depth of light and hypoxic environment of infectious sites).

Abstract
Carbon dots (or carbon quantum dots) are small (less than 10 nm) and luminescent carbon nanoparticles with some form of surface passivation. As an emerging class of nanomaterials, carbon dots have found wide applications in medicine, bioimaging, sensing, electronic devices, and catalysis. In this review, we focus on the recent advancements of carbon dots for sensing and killing microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Synthesis, functionalization, and a toxicity profile of these carbon dots are presented. We also discuss the underlying mechanisms of carbon dot-based sensing and killing of microorganisms.

Abstract
Pathogenic bacteria, fungi and viruses pose serious threats to the human health under appropriate conditions. There are many rapid and sensitive approaches have been developed for identification and quantification of specific pathogens, but many challenges still exist. Culture/colony counting and polymerase chain reaction are the classical methods used for pathogen detection, but their operations are time-consuming and laborious. On the other hand, the emergence and rapid spread of multidrug-resistant pathogens is another global threat. It is thus of utmost urgency to develop new therapeutic agents or strategies. Luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) and their derived supramolecular systems with unique optical properties have been developed as fluorescent probes for turn-on sensing of pathogens with high sensitivity and specificity. In addition, AIE-based supramolecular nanostructures exhibit excellent photodynamic inactivation (PDI) activity in aggregate, offering great potential for not only light-up diagnosis of pathogen, but also image-guided PDI therapy for pathogenic infection.

Abstract
The cell membrane is the protecting frontier of cells, which is crucial for maintaining cell integrity, and has a close relationship with cell growth and death. There is a growing need for cell membrane imaging and monitoring in both living and dying cells. Herein, we report a new amphiphilic tetraphenylethene-based pyridinium salt (TPE-MEM) with aggregation-induced emission features for discriminatory cell membrane imaging. The fluorogenic probe with high yield was synthesized following asymmetric McMurry reaction, Williamson ether synthesis reaction, Suzuki coupling, and aldol condensation between a double-charged pyridinium salt and hexyloxytetraphenylethene benzaldehyde. TPE-MEM shows good water solubility, biocompatibility, and cell membrane specificity. Interestingly, a reactive oxygen species (ROS) is produced by the molecule (TPE-MEM) under room-light irradiation, which could destroy the integrity of the plasma membrane and cause cell necrosis. This enables a visible observation of cell necrosis and the phototherapeutic effect under a mild condition. Preliminary animal investigations also demonstrated the photodynamic therapy (PDT) effectiveness of TPE-MEM in tumor growth inhibition. We conclude that TPE-MEM is potentially a cell membrane-selective photosensitizer for PDT and it is worthy of further exploration of the phototherapeutic effect on animals systematically.

Abstract
Fluorescence visualization for hydrophilic spatial heterogeneity inside microfluidic chips is a long-standing challenge owing to the lack of fluorescent dyes with high contrast between the target and the background noise. Herein, we used boronic acid in aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecules as an anchor group towards modified hydroxyl groups, and an in situ visualization approach for hydrophilic spatial heterogeneity inside microfluidic chips was demonstrated. This success is based on the high-contrast of fluorescent behaviors for AIE molecules in aqueous solution and their immobilization by hydroxyl groups inside the microfluidic channels. In comparison to conventional laboratory-based ex situ techniques, the proposed strategy provides a direct representation for hydrophilic spatial heterogeneity, including the quantity and distribution of hydroxyl groups. This discovery not only identifies a previously unknown variability in hydrophilic spatial heterogeneity inside microfluidic channels, but also guides an optimal hydrophilic modification method in the channels.

Abstract
Phagocytosis of bacteria is an important biological process. Gaining insight into this process may greatly benefit related pathological studies and further contribute to development of therapies for infectious diseases. Tools for studying these internalization processes, however, are limited. Herein, we demonstrate the feasibility of employing an environmentally sensitive aggregation-induced emission (AIE) probe for bacteria labeling and imaging. By tracking the fluorescence variation of the stained bacteria, the pH changes of its microenvironment can be monitored. In this way, the phagocytic entry of these bacteria into the macrophage cells and the intravacuolar acidification can be visualized in real-time.

Abstract
In recent years, amphiphilic AIE-active fluorescent organic materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties have been extensively investigated due to their excellent properties. This study describes the synthesis of a novel AIE-active dye of tetraphenylethylene diphenylaldehyde (TPDA). As compared with the reported fluorescent dye TPB, the fluorescence intensity of TPDA is significantly enhanced with the distinct red shift of emission wavelength. Subsequently, the corresponding novel polymers PEG-TPD were obtained through the one-pot combination of Hantzsch reaction and RAFT polymerization. The structure of PEG-TPD1 by the two-step process was similar with that of PEG-TPD2 by the one-pot method at the same feeding ratio of TPDA and PEGMA. The molecular weights (Mn) of the polymers PEG-TPD1 and PEG-TPD2 were respectively 52 000 and 28 000 with narrow polydispersity index (PDI), and their molar fractions of TPDA were respectively about 9.5% and 14.3%, indicating that the degree of Hantzsch reaction in the one-pot process was more complete. Subsequently, the effect of feed ratio of TPDA and PEGMA on polymer structure was further studied. It can be seen that the Mn of the polymers gradually increases as the proportion of TPDA increases. In aqueous solution, these amphiphilic PEG-TPD polymers tended to self-assemble into corresponding fluorescent polymer nanoparticles (FPNs). The diameter of PEG-TPD2 FPNs ranged from 200 to 300 nm, and their fluorescence emission spectra have maximum emission peak at 509 nm. The PEG-TPD FPNs have significant advantages such as good fluorescence intensity, high water dispersibility, good biocompatibility and easy absorption by cells, which can be attractively used in the field of bioimaging. This work reported the fabrication of a novel AIE-active dye and its amphiphilic PEG-TPD fluorescent polymers via one-pot combination of RAFT polymerization and Hantzsch reaction, which showed potential applications in bioimaging.![]()

Abstract
Fluorescent dye staining combined with fluorescence microscopy or flow cytometry is becoming a routine way to monitor microorganism viability that is necessary for food safety, antibiotic development, and human health. However, the conventional live/dead assay dyes suffer from high cost, inconvenient staining steps, and high cytotoxicity, which is urgently needed to overcome. Herein, cheap carbon dots, CDs-EPS605, were reported to successfully assess microbial viability in a convenient way with neglectable cytotoxicity. The fluorescent N-doped CDs-EPS605 could be facilely prepared from bacterial amino exopolysaccharide (EPS) by one-step hydrothermal carbonization, which is cost-effective and sustainable. The negatively charged CDs-EPS605 consisted of C, H, O, N, P, and S, and featured various functional groups, including -COOH, -OH, -CONH-, and -NH2. CDs-EPS605 were observed to sensitively and selectively stain dead microorganisms instead of live ones to enable discrimination of live/dead microorganisms. The labeling method with CDs-EPS605 did not require protection from light, or washing, which is convenient. Additionally, CDs-EPS605 displayed better photostability and much less cytotoxicity compared to the commercial counterpart. Altogether, CDs-EPS605 represent a simple, yet powerful staining agent for microbial viability assessment, and at the same time enrich the current applications of microbial EPS.

Abstract
A new class of biosensor molecules evoking fluorescent emission by rotation-restricted binding with bacteria was examined for its applicability in detecting live bacteria instantly. The fluorogens possessed multiple tetraphenylethene (TPE)-cored boronic acids to oligomerize through complexation with cis-diols on bacterial surfaces, resulting in aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The fluorogen having two boronic acid units discriminated between live and dead bacteria by showing AIE activity only with the latter. Live bacteria were instantly detected by consequent treatment with reagents of three and four di-boronates (which showed AIE activity with both live and dead bacteria). This phenomenon may lead to a practical method for live bacteria detection.

Abstract
The increasing impact of bacteria on cancer progression and treatments has been witnessed in recent years. Insufficient attention to cancer-related bacteria may lead to distant metastasis, poor therapeutic efficiency and low survival rates for cancers. Exploiting new approaches that enable selective imaging and effective killing of cancer cells and bacteria are thus of great value for the battle against cancers. Herein, we report an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogen, namely TPPCN, with intense emission and efficient reactive oxygen species production for fluorescence imaging and killing cancer cells and Gram-positive bacteria. This work not only demonstrates the potential of AIE luminogens in comprehensive cancer treatments but also stimulates the enthusiasm of scientists to design more multifunctional AIE systems for both cancer and bacteria theranostics.

Abstract
Luminescent bioprobes are powerful analytical means for biosensing and optical imaging. Luminogens featured with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) attributes have emerged as ideal building blocks for high-performance bioprobes. Bioprobes constructed with AIE luminogens have been identified to be a novel class of FL light-up probing tools. In contrast to conventional bioprobes based on the luminophores with aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, the AIE-based bioprobes enjoy diverse superiorities, such as lower background, higher signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity, better accuracy, and more outstanding resistance to photobleaching. AIE-based bioprobes have been tailored for a vast variety of purposes ranging from biospecies sensing to bioimaging to theranostics (i.e., image-guided therapies). In this review, recent five years' advances in AIE-based bioprobes are briefly overviewed in a perspective distinct from other reviews, focusing on the most appealing trends and progresses in this flourishing research field. There are altogether 11 trends outlined, which have been classified into four aspects: the probe composition and form (bioconjugtes, nanoprobes), the output signal of probe (far-red/near-infrared luminescence, two/three-photon excited fluorescence, phosphorescence), the modality and functionality of probing system (dual-modality, dual/multifunctionality), the probing object and application outlet (specific organelles, cancer cells, bacteria, real samples). Typical examples of each trend are presented and specifically demonstrated. Some important prospects and challenges are pointed out as well in the hope of intriguing more interests from researchers working in diverse areas into this exciting research field.

Abstract
A solid-liquid-vapor interface dominated by a three-phase contact line usually serves as an active area for interfacial reactions and provides a vital clue to surface behavior. Recently, direct imaging of the triphase interface of superwetting interfaces on the microscale/nanoscale has attracted broad scientific attention for both theoretical research and practical applications, and has gradually become an efficient and intuitive approach to explore the wetting behaviors of various multiphase interfaces. Here, recent progress on characterizing the solid-liquid-vapor triphase interface on the microscale/nanoscale with diverse types of imaging apparatus is summarized. Moreover, the accurate, visible, and quantitative information that can be obtained shows the real interfacial morphology of the wetting behaviors of multiphase interfaces. On the basis of fundamental research, technical innovations in imaging and complicated multiphase interfaces of the superwetting surface are also briefly presented.

![]() We present a locating technique for inorganic materials in polymer-matrix composites through a post-labeling approach based on specific covalent binding.
There is a long-standing challenge to realize in situ visualization of incorporated inorganic materials in organic–inorganic composites in a post-labeling manner, owing to the lack of specific fluorescent organic dye molecules for targeting inorganic materials. Herein, we observe that the specific covalent B–O binding between the hydroxyl groups of inorganic materials and commercially available aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active boronic acid could lead to the formation of highly emissive solid-state fluorescent composite materials. The hydroxyl-triggered luminescent probe may serve as a practical method for in situ location of incorporated inorganic materials in polymer-matrix composites by simply dipping the composite film in boronic acid-modified AIE solution. This present work offers a non-invasive avenue to locate inorganic materials which possess hydroxyl-groups in polymer-matrix composites, thereby developing a convenient screening strategy for assessing the advanced properties of composites. This strategy can also be extended to the targeted tracing of other inorganic materials with inherent and functionalized carboxyl, amino, sulfhydryl and other groups via tuning the binding affinity between the inorganic materials and luminescent molecules.
