Manganese-containing Bioactive Glass Enhances Osteogenic Activity of TiO2 Nanotube Arrays

Titanium and its alloys are the most used biomaterials for orthopedic and dental applications. However, up to 10% of these medical devices still fail, mostly due to implant loosening and suboptimal integration at the implant site. The biomaterial surface plays a critical role in promoting osseointegration, which can reduce the risk of device failure. In this study, we propose a novel surface modification on titanium to improve osteogenic differentiation by depositing manganese-containing bioactive glass (BG) on TiO2 nanotube arrays. The surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, contact angle goniometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Cell toxicity, viability, adhesion, and proliferation of adipose-derived stem cells on the surfaces were investigated up to 7 days. To evaluate the osteogenic properties of the surfaces, alkaline phosphatase activity, total protein, osteocalcin expression, and calcium deposition were quantified up to 28 days. The results indicate that TiO2 nanotube arrays modified with BG promote cell growth and induce increased osteocalcin and calcium contents when compared to unmodified TiO2 nanotube arrays. The deposition of manganese-containing bioactive glass onto TiO2 nanotubes demonstrates the ability to enhance osteogenic activity on titanium, showing great potential for use in orthopedic and dental implants.

Effect of Silica Size and Content on Superamphiphobic Properties of Silica-Fluoropolymer Core-Shell Coatings

We present a facile approach to fabricate superamphiphobic surfaces by spray coating silica-fluoropolymer core-shell particles without substrate pretreatment with an additional binder resin. A series of SiO2@poly(1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate) (SiO2@PFMA) core-shell particles with core particles of different sizes were prepared via thiol-lactam initiated radical polymerization (TLIRP). The surface of each SiO2 particle with an average particle size of 12, 80, 150, and 350 nm was modified with (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane and used as a seed for TLIRP. The SiO2@PFMA particles with various SiO2 sizes and contents were coated on aluminum substrates by a spray gun and then thermally treated to form a stable, rough composite layer. During the spray coating, the core-shell particles were aggregated by rapid evaporation of the solvent and then irregularly adhered to the substrate resulting in hierarchical structures. In the case of SiO2@PFMAs with low SiO2 contents, the roughness created mainly by the polymer shell disappeared during heat treatment. However, the substrates coated with SiO2@PFMAs with high SiO2 contents maintained the roughness even after heat treatment. The core-shell particles prepared with 12 nm SiO2 formed a stable superamphiphobic surface. The water/hexadecane contact and sliding angles on an aluminum plate coated with SiO2@PFMA, prepared using 12 nm silica at 46 wt% silica content (12 nm-SiO2(46)@PFMA), were 178.5°/159.2° and 1°/7°, respectively. The cross-cut tape test showed that adhesion between the 12nm-SiO2(46)@PFMA and the aluminum substrate was classified as 5B. A glass surface spray-coated with the core-shell composite particles exhibited transparent superhydrophobicity and translucent superamphiphobicity by controlling the concentration of the coating solution.

PTFEP-Al2O3 hybrid nanowires reducing thrombosis and biofouling

Thrombosis and bacterial infection are major problems in cardiovascular implants. Here we demonstrated that a superhydrophobic surface composed of poly(bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)phosphazene) (PTFEP)-Al₂O₃ hybrid nanowires (NWs) is effective to reduce both platelet adhesion/activation and bacterial adherence/colonization. The proposed approach allows surface modification of cardiovascular implants which have 3D complex geometries.

In Vitro Thrombogenicity Testing of Biomaterials

The short- and long-term thrombogenicity of implant materials is still unpredictable, which is a significant challenge for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. A knowledge-based approach for implementing biofunctions in materials requires a detailed understanding of the medical device in the biological system. In particular, the interplay between material and blood components/cells as well as standardized and commonly acknowledged in vitro test methods allowing a reproducible categorization of the material thrombogenicity requires further attention. Here, the status of in vitro thrombogenicity testing methods for biomaterials is reviewed, particularly taking in view the preparation of test materials and references, the selection and characterization of donors and blood samples, the prerequisites for reproducible approaches and applied test systems. Recent joint approaches in finding common standards for a reproducible testing are summarized and perspectives for a more disease oriented in vitro thrombogenicity testing are discussed.

Interaction of blood plasma proteins with superhemophobic titania nanotube surfaces

The need to improve blood biocompatibility of medical devices is urgent. As soon as blood encounters a biomaterial implant, proteins adsorb on its surfaces, often leading to several complications such as thrombosis and failure of the device. Therefore, controlling protein adsorption plays a major role in developing hemocompatible materials. In this study, the interaction of key blood plasma proteins with superhemophobic titania nanotube substrates and the blood clotting responses was investigated. The substrate stability was evaluated and fibrinogen adsorption and thrombin formation from plasma were assessed using ELISA. Whole blood clotting kinetics was also investigated, and Factor XII activation on the substrates was characterized by an in vitro plasma coagulation time assay. The results show that superhemophobic titania nanotubes are stable and considerably decrease surface protein adsorption/Factor XII activation as well as delay the whole blood clotting, and thus can be a promising approach for designing blood contacting medical devices.

Nonfluorinated Superomniphobic Surfaces through Shape-Tunable Mushroom-like Polymeric Micropillar Arrays

Superomniphobic surfaces showing extremely liquid-repellent properties have received a great amount of attention as they can be used in various industrial and biomedical applications. However, so far, the fabrication processes of these materials mostly have involved the coating of perfluorocarbons onto micro- and nanohierarchical structures of these surfaces, which inevitably causes environmental pollution, leading to health concerns. Herein, we developed a facile method to obtain flexible superomniphobic surfaces without perfluorocarbon coatings that have shape-tunable mushroom-like micropillars (MPs). Inspired by the unique structures on the skin of springtails, we fabricated mushroom-like structures with downward facing edges (i.e., a doubly re-entrant structure) on a surface. The flexible MP structures were fabricated using a conventional micromolding technique, and the shapes of the mushroom caps were made highly tunable via the deposition of a thin aluminum (Al) layer. Due to the compressive residual stress of the Al, the mushroom caps were observed to bend toward the polymer upon forming doubly re-entrant-MP structures. The obtained surface was found to repel most low-surface-tension liquids such as oils, alcohols, and even fluorinated solvents. The developed flexible superomniphobic surface showed liquid repellency even upon mechanical stretching and after surface energy modification. We envision that the developed superomniphobic surface with high flexibility and wetting resistance after surface energy modification will be used in a wide range of applications such as self-cleaning clothes and gloves.

Fabrication of a flexible transparent superomniphobic polydimethylsiloxane surface with a micropillar array

Although superomniphobic surfaces have attracted extensive interest owing to many important applications, successful fabrication of such surfaces still remains a critical challenge. Herein, we present a flexible transparent superomniphobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface with a micropillar array using Si nanowires as the mould. The as-obtained PDMS not only exhibits excellent liquid-repellent performance with a static contact angle of over 150° and sliding angle of less than 6° against a wide range of liquids, but also maintains the super-repellency even under acid/base corrosion, mechanical damage, and unidirectional stretching.
