Simultaneous Determination of Phenol and Mononitrophenol Isomers Using PLS Regression and Conventional and Derivative Spectrophotometry

Degrading a mixture of three textile dyes using photo-assisted electrochemical process with BDD anode and O₂-diffusion cathode

In this paper, degradation of a mixture of three azo dyes was studied by the photo-assisted electrochemical process using an O₂-diffusion cathode containing carbon nanotubes and boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode. The concentration of three textile dyes (C.I. Acid Orange 8 (AO8), C.I. Acid Orange 10 (AO10), and C.I. Acid Orange 12 (AO12)) was determined simultaneously despite the severe overlap of their spectra. For this purpose, partial least square (PLS), as a multivariate calibration method, was utilized based on recording UV-Vis spectra during the decolorization process. Moreover, the central composite design was used for the modeling of photo-assisted electrochemical decolorization of the aqueous solutions containing three dyes. The investigated parameters were the initial concentration of three dyes, applied current and reaction time. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that the obtained regression models match the experimental results well with R (Khataee et al. 2010, Clean-Soil Air Water 38 (1):96-103, 2010) of 0.972, 0.971, and 0.957 for AO8, AO10, and AO12, respectively. Three-dimensional surface and contour plots were applied to describe the relation between experimental conditions and the observed response. The results of TOC analysis confirmed good ability of proposed photo-assisted electrochemical process for degradation and mineralization of textile industry wastewater.

Simultaneous monitoring of photocatalysis of three pharmaceuticals by immobilized TiO2 nanoparticles: chemometric assessment, intermediates identification and ecotoxicological evaluation

In this study, the photocatalytic degradation of a mixture of three pharmaceuticals, Metronidazole (MET), Atenolol (ATL) and Chlorpromazine (CPR), was quantified simultaneously during the UV/TiO2 process. The investigated TiO2 was Millennium PC-500 immobilized on ceramic plates by sol-gel based method. The partial least squares modeling was successfully applied for the multivariate calibration of the spectrophotometric data. The central composite design was applied to model and optimize the UV/TiO2 process. Predicted values of removal efficiency were found to be in good agreement with experimental values for MET, ATL and CPR (R(2)=0.947 and Adj-R(2)=0.906, R(2)=0.977 and Adj-R(2)=0.960 and R(2)=0.982 and Adj-R(2)=0.969, respectively). The optimum initial concentration of pharmaceuticals, reaction time and UV light intensity was found to be 10 mg L(-1), 150 min and 38.45 W m(-2), respectively. The main degradation intermediates of pharmaceuticals produced in this process were identified by GC-MS technique. The chronic ecotoxicity of pharmaceuticals was evaluated using aquatic species Spirodela polyrrhiza prior to and after photocatalysis. The TOC results (90% removal after 16 h) and ecotoxicological experiments revealed that the photocatalysis process could effectively mineralize and reduce the ecotoxicity of the pharmaceuticals from their aqueous solutions.

Simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of phenanthridine, phenanthridinone and phenanthridine N-oxide using multivariate calibration methods

The multivariate calibration methods, partial least squares (PLS) and principle component regression (PCR) have been used to determine phenanthridine, phenanthridinone and phenanthridine N-oxide in spiked human plasma samples. Resolution of binary and ternary mixtures of analytes with minimum sample pre-treatment and without analyte separation has been successfully achieved analyzing the UV spectral data. The net analyte signal (NAS) concept was also used to calculate multivariate analytical figures of merit such as limit of detection, selectivity and sensitivity. The simultaneous determination of three analytes was possible by PLS and PCR processing of sample absorbance in the 210–355 nm region. Good recoveries were obtained for both synthetic mixtures and spiked human plasma samples.

A PLS-based extractive spectrophotometric method for simultaneous determination of carbamazepine and carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide in plasma and comparison with HPLC

Carbamazepine (CBZ) undergoes enzyme biotransformation through epoxidation with the formation of its metabolite, carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide (CBZE). A simple chemometrics-assisted spectrophotometric method has been proposed for simultaneous determination of CBZ and CBZE in plasma. A liquid extraction procedure was operated to separate the analytes from plasma, and the UV absorbance spectra of the resultant solutions were subjected to partial least squares (PLS) regression. The optimum number of PLS latent variables was selected according to the PRESS values of leave-one-out cross-validation. A HPLC method was also employed for comparison. The respective mean recoveries for analysis of CBZ and CBZE in synthetic mixtures were 102.57 (+/-0.25)% and 103.00 (+/-0.09)% for PLS and 99.40 (+/-0.15)% and 102.20 (+/-0.02)%. The concentrations of CBZ and CBZE were also determined in five patients using the PLS and HPLC methods. The results showed that the data obtained by PLS were comparable with those obtained by HPLC method.

A comparative study between PCR and PLS in simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of diphenylamine, aniline, and phenol: Effect of wavelength selection

Partial least squares (PLS) and principal component regression (PCR) have received considerable attention in the chemometrics for multicomponent analysis where superiority of one over another is a challenging problem yet. Considering the effect of wavelength selection, a comparison was made between PCR and PLS methods by application those to simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of diphenylamine (DPA), a compound from the third European Union list of priority pollutants, and its environmentally related products aniline and phenol. The UV absorbance spectra of the methanolic solutions of the analytes were measured in the concentration ranges of 1.0-10.0 microg mL(-1) and then subjected to PCR and PLS. The models refinement procedure and validation was performed by cross-validation. A modified changeable size moving windows strategy, where optimized the intervals between the sensors in a selected windows, was also proposed to select the more informative spectral regions for each of the analytes. It was found that wavelength selection improved the quality of predictions for both regression methods whereas more reliable results were obtained by removing of the highly collinear neighboring wavelengths. The resultant data explained that PLS produced more or less better results when whole spectral data were used but in the case of selected wavelength regions both methods produced similar results and no comments could be given about the superiority of one against another. The major difference was obtaining the higher number of factors for PCR, which is not a significant problem.

Direct spectrophotometric determination of bitterness in virgin olive oil without prior isolation by pH gradient

Bitter taste, an organoleptic characteristic of virgin olive oil, has been related to phenolic compound composition. The usual method to assess this attribute is by a sensorial panel of tasters, while in the laboratory; methods based on physicochemical properties have been assayed as K225, the most widely used one. However, a direct determination of bitterness in virgin olive oil is useful for quality-control purposes. The proposed method is supported by the observable spectral change undergone by the compounds responsible for bitterness as pH varied. This measurement was carried out directly in the oil, without prior isolation of bitter analytes. The difference of absorbance between alkaline and neutral medium showed a highly significant correlation (r = 0.988, p < 0.0001) with the conventional parameter (K225). The method was rapid, required a small sample, allowed direct determination of bitterness in virgin olive oil, and could be easily automated.
