Metal-organic frameworks: a rapidly growing class of versatile nanoporous materials

Extrinsically conducting MOFs: guest-promoted enhancement of electrical conductivity, thin film fabrication and applications

Conductive metal-organic frameworks are of current interest in chemical science because of their applications in chemiresistive sensing, electrochemical energy storage, electrocatalysis, etc. Different strategies have been employed to design conductive frameworks. In this review, we discuss the influence of different types of guest species incorporated within the pores or channels of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous coordination polymers (PCPs) to generate charge transfer pathways and modulate their electrical conductivity. We have classified dopants or guest species into three different categories: (i) metal-based dopants, (ii) molecule and molecular entities and (iii) organic conducting polymers. Different types of metal ions, metal nano-clusters and metal oxides have been used to enhance electrical conductivity in MOFs. Metal ions and metal nano-clusters depend on the hopping process for efficient charge transfer whereas metal-oxides show charge transport through the metal-oxygen pathway. Several types of molecules or molecular entities ranging from neutral TCNQ, I2, and fullerene to ionic methyl viologen, organometallic like nickelcarborane, etc. have been used. In these cases, the charge transfer process varies with the guest species. When organic conducting polymers are the guest, the charge transport occurs through the polymer chains, mostly based on extended π-conjugation. Here we provide a comprehensive and critical review of these strategies to add electrical conductivity to the, in most cases, otherwise insulating MOFs and PCPs. We point out the guest encapsulation process, the geometry and structure of the resulting host-guest complex, the host-guest interactions and the charge transport mechanism for each case. We also present the methods for thin film fabrication of conducting MOFs (both, liquid-phase and gas-phase based methods) and their most relevant applications like electrocatalysis, sensing, charge storage, photoconductivity, photocatalysis,… We end this review with the main obstacles and challenges to be faced and the appealing perspectives of these 21st century materials.

Utilizing Nanostructured Materials for Hydrogen Generation, Storage, and Diverse Applications

The rapid advancement of refined nanostructures and nanotechnologies offers significant potential to boost research activities in hydrogen storage. Recent innovations in hydrogen storage have centered on nanostructured materials, highlighting their effectiveness in molecular hydrogen storage, chemical storage, and as nanoconfined hydride supports. Emphasizing the importance of exploring ultra-high-surface-area nanoporous materials and metals, we advocate for their mechanical stability, rigidity, and high hydride loading capacities to enhance hydrogen storage efficiency. Despite the evident benefits of nanostructured materials in hydrogen storage, we also address the existing challenges and future research directions in this domain. Recent progress in creating intricate nanostructures has had a notable positive impact on the field of hydrogen storage, particularly in the realm of storing molecular hydrogen, where these nanostructured materials are primarily utilized.

Impact of Synthetic Variables on the Structural Diversity of TbIII-Carboxylate Frameworks: Gas Adsorption, Magnetism, and Organocatalysis Investigations

In this work, three unique TbIII-carboxylate frameworks with the formula {[Tb2(OH)2(H2O)2(abtc)]·2H2O}n (1), {[Tb2(abtc)1.5(H2O)3(DMA)]·H2O}n (2) and {[Tb3(abtc)2.5(H2O)4]·H3O}n (3), each displaying structural variations, have been successfully synthesized by the solvothermal reactions of Tb(NO3)3·6H2O with the azo-containing ligand 3,3',5,5'-azobenzene tetracarboxylic acid (H4abtc) under varying conditions. Detailed single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis manifested a remarkable diversity in these structures, demonstrating various coordination patterns of TbIII-metal nodes with the carboxylate groups of the organic linker, which contributed to the generation of intricate three-dimensional (3D) coordination networks with remarkable chemical resistance. Furthermore, frameworks 2 and 3, characterized by porous networks containing two and three independent TbIII-metal nodes, respectively, were both demonstrated to be efficient heterogeneous catalysts toward the cyanosilylation of imines under mild conditions with excellent reusability. In addition, direct current (Dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements conducted on frameworks 1, 2, and 3 indicated that there were obvious antiferromagnetic interactions among the TbIII-metal nodes, which suggests the involvement of intricate intra- and intertrimer exchange channels, adding another fascinating dimension to their physical properties.

Inside this unique circumstance, this article aims to catch recent advancements in the field of MOFs and the utilizations of MOFs relate to the expulsion of arising contaminations that present huge difficulties to water quality because of their steadiness and possible damage to environments and human wellbeing. Customary water treatment techniques regularly neglect to eliminate these poisons, requiring the advancement of novel methodologies. This study overviews engineering techniques for controlling MOF characteristics for better flexibility, stability, and surface area. A current report on MOFs gathered new perspectives that are amicably discussed in emergent technologies and extreme applications towards environmental sectors. Various applications in many fields that exploit MOFs are being fostered, including gas storage, fluid separation, adsorbents, catalysis, medication delivery, and sensor utilizations. Smart Bandage Based on a ZIF-8 Triboelectric Nanogenerator for In Situ Real-Time Monitoring of Drug Concentration

For chronic wounds, frequent replacement of bandages not only increases the likelihood of secondary damage and the risk of cross infection but also wastes medication. Therefore, in situ real-time monitoring of the concentrations of residual drugs in bandages is crucial. Here, we propose a novel strategy that combines a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with medical bandages to develop a smart bandage based on zeolite imidazolate framework TENG. During the process of wound healing, the electrical output of TENG changes with the continuous release of drugs. Based on the correlation between the electrical signal of TENG and drug concentration, the concentration of residual drugs in the bandage can be monitored in real-time in situ, guiding medical staff to replace the bandage at the most appropriate time. The smart bandage based on TENG provides a new strategy for in situ real-time monitoring of drug concentration and also provides an ideal and feasible solution for the field of biomedical drug sensing.

In-situ forming Cu-based metal-organic framework in the presence of chitosan-Fe3O4 nanohybrids: A pH-sensitive carrier for controlled release of doxorubicin

In recent years, stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems based on pH, particularly those developed using bio-derived nanocomposite systems, have gained significant attention. In this work, a novel magnetic carrier was designed based on biopolymeric chitosan and metal-organic framework (MOF) for pH-controlling the release of anticancer drugs. To end this, an in-situ green method was performed to form Cu-based MOF in the presence of a magnetic polysaccharide synthesized by precipitation method toward the construction of CS/Fe3O4/Cu-MOF nanocomposite. The nanocomposite was immersed in an aqueous solution of a model anticancer drug, doxorubicin (DOX), and a higher loading capacity (90.1 ± 0.5 %) was achieved. The in-vitro drug release study showed low release rates in simulated physiological environments (pH 7.4, 37 °C, lower than about 20 %), but higher release rates in tumor tissue conditions (pH 4.5, 41 °C, higher than about 60 %) over 96 h, allowing for sustained and extended delivery of DOX. Additionally, the MTT assay demonstrated that the blank and DOX-loaded CS/Fe3O4/Cu-MOF had good cytocompatibility (over 80 % cell viability) and considerable cytotoxicity (lower than 40 % at 16 μg/mL) toward breast cancer (MCF-7) cell line, respectively. These results indicated that the synthesized nanocomposite with suitable pH-sensitivity has potential as a targeted anticancer agent.

An Appraisal for Providing Charge Transfer (CT) Through Synthetic Porous Frameworks for their Semiconductor Applications

In recent years, there has been considerable focus on the development of charge transfer (CT) complex formation as a means to modify the band gaps of organic materials. In particular, CT complexes alternate layers of aromatic molecules with donor (D) and acceptor (A) properties to provide inherent electrical conductivity. In particular, the synthetic porous frameworks as attractive D-A components have been extensively studied in recent years in comparison to existing D-A materials. Therefore, in this work, the synthetic porous frameworks are classified into conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and compare high-quality materials for CT in semiconductors. This work updates the overview of the above porous frameworks for CT, starting with their early history regarding their semiconductor applications, and lists CT concepts and selected key developments in their CT complexes and CT composites. In addition, the network formation methods and their functionalization are discussed to provide access to a variety of potential applications. Furthermore, several theoretical investigations, efficiency improvement techniques, and a discussion of the electrical conductivity of the porous frameworks are also highlighted. Finally, a perspective of synthetic porous framework studies on CT performance is provided along with some comparisons.

Advances in metal-organic framework-based nanozymes in ROS scavenging medicine

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play important roles in regulating various physiological functions in the human body, however, excessive ROS can cause serious damage to the human body, considering the various limitations of natural enzymes as scavengers of ROS in the body, the development of better materials for the scavenging of ROS is of great significance to the biomedical field, and nanozymes, as a kind of nanomaterials which can show the activity of natural enzymes. Have a good potential for the development in the area of ROS scavenging. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are porous crystalline materials with a periodic network structure composed of metal nodes and organic ligands, have been developed with a variety of active nanozymes including catalase-like, superoxide dismutase-like, and glutathione peroxidase-like enzymes due to the adjustability of active sites, structural diversity, excellent biocompatibility, and they have shown a wide range of applications and prospects. In the present review, we first introduce three representative natural enzymes for ROS scavenging in the human body, methods for the detection of relevant enzyme-like activities and mechanisms of enzyme-like clearance are discussed, meanwhile, we systematically summarize the progress of the research on MOF-based nanozymes, including the design strategy, mechanism of action, and medical application, etc. Finally, the current challenges of MOF-based nanozymes are summarized, and the future development direction is anticipated. We hope that this review can contribute to the research of MOF-based nanozymes in the medical field related to the scavenging of ROS.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials for pyroptosis-mediated cancer therapy

Pyroptosis is regarded as a promising strategy to modulate tumor immune microenvironments for anticancer therapy. Although pyroptosis inducers have been extensively explored in the biomedical field, their drug resistance, off-targeting capacity, and adverse effects do not fulfill the growing demands of therapy. Nowadays, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unique structures and facile synthesis/functionalization characteristics have shown great potential in anticancer therapy. The flexible choices of metal ions and ligands endow MOFs with inherent anti-cancer efficiency, whereas the porous structures in MOFs make them ideal vehicles for delivering various chemodrug-based pyroptosis inducers. In this review, we provide the latest advances in MOF-based materials to evoke pyroptosis and give a brief but comprehensive review of the different types of MOFs for pyroptosis-mediated cancer therapy. Finally, we also discuss the current challenges of MOF-based pyroptosis inducers and their future prospects in this field.

Metal-organic frameworks as candidates for tumor sonodynamic therapy: Designable structures for targeted multifunctional transformation

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT), utilizing ultrasound (US) as the trigger, has gained popularity recently as a therapeutic approach with significant potential for treating various diseases. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), characterized by structural flexibility, are prominently emerging in the SDT realm as an innovative type of sonosensitizer, offering functional tunability and biocompatibility. However, due to the inherent limitations of MOFs, such as low reactivity to reactive oxygen species and challenges posed by the complex tumor microenvironment, MOF-based sonosensitizers with singular functions are unable to demonstrate the desired therapeutic efficacy and may pose risks of toxicity, limiting their biological applications to superficial tissues. MOFs generally possess distinctive crystalline structures and properties, and their controlled coordination environments provide a flexible platform for exploring structure-effect relationships and guiding the design and development of MOF-based nanomaterials to unlock their broader potential in biological fields. The primary focus of this paper is to summarize cases involving the modification of different MOF materials and the innovative strategies developed for various complex conditions. The paper outlines the diverse application areas of functionalized MOF-based sonosensitizers in tumor synergistic therapies, highlighting the extensive prospects of SDT. Additionally, challenges confronting SDT are briefly summarized to stimulate increased scientific interest in the practical application of MOFs and the successful clinical translation of SDT. Through these discussions, we strive to foster advancements that lead to early-stage clinical benefits for patients. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: 1. An overview for the progresses in SDT explored from a novel and fundamental perspective. 2. Different modification strategies to improve the MOFs-mediated SDT efficacy are provided. 3. Guidelines for the design of multifunctional MOFs-based sonosensitizers are offered. 4. Powerful tumor ablation potential is reflected in SDT-led synergistic therapies. 5. Future challenges in the field of MOFs-based SDT in clinical translation are suggested.

Deciphering Photoinduced Catalytic Reaction Mechanisms in Natural and Artificial Photosynthetic Systems on Multiple Temporal and Spatial Scales Using X-ray Probes

Utilization of renewable energies for catalytically generating value-added chemicals is highly desirable in this era of rising energy demands and climate change impacts. Artificial photosynthetic systems or photocatalysts utilize light to convert abundant CO2, H2O, and O2 to fuels, such as carbohydrates and hydrogen, thus converting light energy to storable chemical resources. The emergence of intense X-ray pulses from synchrotrons, ultrafast X-ray pulses from X-ray free electron lasers, and table-top laser-driven sources over the past decades opens new frontiers in deciphering photoinduced catalytic reaction mechanisms on the multiple temporal and spatial scales. Operando X-ray spectroscopic methods offer a new set of electronic transitions in probing the oxidation states, coordinating geometry, and spin states of the metal catalytic center and photosensitizers with unprecedented energy and time resolution. Operando X-ray scattering methods enable previously elusive reaction steps to be characterized on different length scales and time scales. The methodological progress and their application examples collected in this review will offer a glimpse into the accomplishments and current state in deciphering reaction mechanisms for both natural and synthetic systems. Looking forward, there are still many challenges and opportunities at the frontier of catalytic research that will require further advancement of the characterization techniques.

Heavy metal sequestration from wastewater by metal-organic frameworks: a state-of-the-art review of recent progress

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly promising adsorbents for removing heavy metals from wastewater due to their tunable structures, high surface areas, and exceptional adsorption capacities. This review meticulously examines and summarizes recent advancements in producing and utilizing MOF-based adsorbents for sequestering heavy metal ions from water. It begins by outlining and contrasting commonly employed methods for synthesizing MOFs, such as solvothermal, microwave, electrochemical, ultrasonic, and mechanochemical. Rather than delving into the specifics of adsorption process parameters, the focus shifts to analyzing the adsorption capabilities and underlying mechanisms against critical metal(loid) ions like chromium, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury under various environmental conditions. Additionally, this article discusses strategies to optimize MOF performance, scale-up production, and address environmental implications. The comprehensive review aims to enhance the understanding of MOF-based adsorption for heavy metal remediation and stimulate further research in this critical field. In brief, this review article presents a comprehensive overview of the contemporary information on MOFs as an effective adsorbent and the challenges being faced by these adsorbents for heavy metal mitigation (including stability, cost, environmental issues, and optimization), targeting to develop a vital reference for future MOF research.

Unveiling the mechanisms behind high CO2 adsorption by the selection of suitable ionic liquids incorporated into a ZIF-8 metal organic framework: A computational approach

There is growing focus on the crucial task of effectively capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere to mitigate environmental consequences. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been used to replace many conventional materials in gas separation, and the incorporation of ionic liquids (ILs) into porous MOFs has shown promise as a new technique for improving CO2 capture and separation. However, the driving force underlying the electronic modulation of MOF nanostructures and the mechanisms behind their high CO2 adsorption remain unclear. This study reports the effect of encapsulating different imidazolium ILs in porous ZIF-8, to clarify the adsorption mechanism of CO2 using density functional theory (DFT)-based approaches. For this purpose, a range of anions, including bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [NTf2], methanesulfonate [MeSO3], and acetate [AC], were combined with the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium [EMIM]+ cation. [EMIM]+-based ILs@ZIF-8 composites were computationally investigated to identify suitable materials for CO2 capture. First, the intermolecular and intramolecular interactions between [EMIM]+ and different anions were examined in detail, and their effects on CO2 adsorption were explored. Subsequently, the integration of these ILs into the ZIF-8 solid structure was studied to reveal how their interactions influenced the CO2 adsorption behavior. Our results demonstrate that the incorporation of ILs strongly affects the adsorption capability of CO2, which is highly dependent on the nature of the ILs inside the ZIF-8 framework. DFT simulations further confirmed that the incorporation of ILs into ZIF-8 led to superior CO2 capture compared to isolated ILs and pristine ZIF-8. This improvement was attributed to the mutual interactions between the ILs and ZIF-8, which effectively fine-tuned CO2 adsorption within the composite structure. This understanding may act as a general guide for gaining more insight into the interfacial interactions between ILs and ZIFs structures and how these molecular-level interactions can help predict the selection of ILs for CO2 adsorption and separation, thereby addressing environmental challenges with greater precision and effectiveness.

MXene-supported MIL-88A(Fe) as persulfate activator for removal of tetracycline

The poor conductivity, poor stability, and agglomeration of iron-based metal organic framework MIL-88A(Fe) limit its application as persulfate (PS) activator in water purification. Herein, MXene-supported MIL-88A(Fe) composites (M88A/MX) were synthesized to enhance its adsorption and catalytic capability for tetracycline (TC) removal. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize prepared materials, confirming the successful attachment of MIL-88A(Fe) to the surface of MXene. M88A/MX-0.2 composites, prepared with 0.2 g MXene addition, exhibit optimal degradation efficiency, reaching 98% under conditions of 0.2 g/L M88A/MX-0.2, 1.0 mM PS, 20 ppm TC, and pH 5. The degradation rate constants of M88A/MX-0.2 were 0.03217 min-1, which was much higher than that of MIL-88A(Fe) (0.00159 min-1) and MXene (0.00626 min-1). The removal effects of reaction parameters, such as dosage of M88A/MX-0.2 and PS; initial solution pH; and the presence of the common co-existing constituents (humic acid and the inorganic anions) were investigated in detail. Additionally, the reuse of M88A/MX-0.2 showed that the composites had good cycling stability by recurrent experiments. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments indicated that ·OH, ·SO4-, and ·O2- were involved in the M88A/MX-0.2/PS system where persulfate oxidation process was activated with prepared M88A/MX-0.2. In addition, the intermediates of photocatalytic degradation were determined by HPLC-MS, and the possible degradation pathways of the target molecules were inferred. This study offered a new avenue for sulfate-based degradation of Fe-based metal organic framework.

Constructing Lanthanide-Organic Complexes for X-ray Scintillation and Imaging

The photoluminescent properties of lanthanide complexes have been thoroughly investigated; however, there have been much fewer studies showcasing their potential use in ionizing radiation detection. In this work, we delve into the photo- and radio-induced luminescence of a series of lanthanide-bearing organic-inorganic hybrids and their potential as a platform for X-ray scintillation and imaging. The judicious synergy between lanthanide cations and 2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)isonicotinate (bppCOO-) ligands affords six new materials with three distinct structures. Notably, Eu-bppCOO-1 and Tb-bppCOO-2 display sharp fingerprint X-ray-excited luminescence (XEL), the intensities of which can be linearly correlated with the X-ray dose rates over a broad dynamic range (0.007-4.55 mGy s-1). Moreover, the X-ray sensing efficacies of Eu-bppCOO-1 and Tb-bppCOO-2 were evaluated, showing that Tb-bppCOO-2 features a lower detection limit of 4.06 μGy s-1 compared to 14.55 μGy s-1 of Eu-bppCOO-1. Given the higher X-ray sensitivity and excellent radiation stability of Tb-bppCOO-2, we fabricated a flexible scintillator film for X-ray imaging by embedding finely ground Tb-bppCOO-2 in the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer. The resulting scintillator film can be utilized for high-resolution X-ray imaging with a spatial resolution of approximately 7 lp mm-1.

When Polymorphism in Metal-Organic Frameworks Enables Water Sorption Profile Tunability for Enhancing Heat Allocation and Water Harvesting Performance

The development of thermally driven water-sorption-based technologies relies on high-performing water vapor adsorbents. Here, polymorphism in Al-metal-organic frameworks is disclosed as a new strategy to tune the hydrophilicity of MOFs. This involves the formation of MOFs built from chains of either trans- or cis- µ-OH-connected corner-sharing AlO4(OH)2 octahedra. Specifically, [Al(OH)(muc)] or MIP-211, is made of trans, trans-muconate linkers, and cis-µ-OH-connected corner-sharing AlO4(OH)2 octahedra giving a 3D network with sinusoidal channels. The polymorph MIL-53-muc has a tiny change in the chain structure that results in a shift of the step position of the water isotherm from P/P0 ≈ 0.5 in MIL-53-muc, to P/P0 ≈ 0.3 in MIP-211. Solid-state NMR and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo reveal that the adsorption occurs initially between two hydroxyl groups of the chains, favored by the cis-positioning in MIP-211, resulting in a more hydrophilic behavior. Finally, theoretical evaluations show that MIP-211 would allow achieving a coefficient of performance for cooling (COPc) of 0.63 with an ultralow driving temperature of 60 °C, outperforming benchmark sorbents for small temperature lifts. Combined with its high stability, easy regeneration, huge water uptake capacity, green synthesis, MIP-211 is among the best adsorbents for adsorption-driven air conditioning and water harvesting from the air.

Biomedical application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in cancer therapy: Stimuli-responsive and biomimetic nanocomposites in targeted delivery, phototherapy and diagnosis

The nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary field that has become a hot topic in cancer therapy. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials and hybrid composites consisted of organic linkers and metal cations. Despite the wide application of MOFs in other fields, the potential of MOFs for purpose of cancer therapy has been revealed by the recent studies. High surface area and porosity, significant drug loading and encapsulation efficiency are among the benefits of using MOFs in drug delivery. MOFs can deliver genes/drugs with selective targeting of tumor cells that can be achieved through functionalization with ligands. The photosensitizers and photo-responsive nanostructures including carbon dots and gold nanoparticles can be loaded in/on MOFs to cause phototherapy-mediated tumor ablation. The immunogenic cell death induction and increased infiltration of cytotoxic CD8+ and CD4+ T cells can be accelerated by MOF platforms in providing immunotherapy of tumor cells. The stimuli-responsive MOF platforms responsive to pH, redox, enzyme and ion can accelerate release of therapeutics in tumor site. Moreover, MOF nanocomposites can be modified ligands and green polymers to improve their selectivity and biocompatibility for cancer therapy. The application of MOFs for the detection of cancer-related biomarkers can participate in the early diagnosis of patients.

Bimetallic MOF-Based Sensor for Highly Sensitive Detection of Ammonia Gases

The demand for the detection of ultralow concentrations of ammonia gas is growing. A bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) comprising Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) was used to achieve highly sensitive and stable detection of ammonia gas at room temperature in this study. First, PB was enriched by using ammonia for improved gas sensing properties. Second, a sensitive membrane with more vacancies was formed by partially replacing Fe3+ with Cu2+ through a cation-exchange strategy. Finally, a capacitive sensor was developed for ultralow-concentration ammonia detection using a Cu-Fe PBA sensitive membrane and interdigitated electrodes (IDEs). To investigate the adsorption efficiency of the designed composite sensitive film for ammonia, PBAs nanoparticles were deposited on a quartz microcrystal balance (QCM) via cyclic voltammetry and a hydrothermal method. Approximately 10 ppm of ammonia was adsorbed under 1 atm by the Cu-Fe PBA film prepared using a reaction time of 36 h, and the adsorption efficiency was measured to be 2.2 mmol g-1 using the QCM frequency response. The Cu-Fe PBAs were also tested using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller theory. The introduction of Cu2+ ions significantly increased the specific surface area of Cu-Fe PBAs MOF, and the number of adsorption sites for ammonia also increased; however, its skeleton structure remained similar to that of PB. Then, the capacitive sensor based on Cu-Fe PBA sensitive membrane and IDE was fabricated and the gas sensing detection device was established for ammonia detection. Overall, the developed capacitive sensor exhibits a linear response of 75-1000 ppb and a detection limit of 3.8 ppb for ultralow ammonia concentrations, which makes it superior to traditional detection methods and thus allows excellent application prospects.

Non-CO2 greenhouse gas separation using advanced porous materials

Global warming has become a growing concern over decades, prompting numerous research endeavours to reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, the major greenhouse gas (GHG). However, the contribution of other non-CO2 GHGs including methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), fluorocarbons, perfluorinated gases, etc. should not be overlooked, due to their high global warming potential and environmental hazards. In order to reduce the emission of non-CO2 GHGs, advanced separation technologies with high efficiency and low energy consumption such as adsorptive separation or membrane separation are highly desirable. Advanced porous materials (APMs) including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), porous organic polymers (POPs), etc. have been developed to boost the adsorptive and membrane separation, due to their tunable pore structure and surface functionality. This review summarizes the progress of APM adsorbents and membranes for non-CO2 GHG separation. The material design and fabrication strategies, along with the molecular-level separation mechanisms are discussed. Besides, the state-of-the-art separation performance and challenges of various APM materials towards each type of non-CO2 GHG are analyzed, offering insightful guidance for future research. Moreover, practical industrial challenges and opportunities from the aspect of engineering are also discussed, to facilitate the industrial implementation of APMs for non-CO2 GHG separation.

Physio-chemical Modifications to Re-engineer Small Extracellular Vesicles for Targeted Anticancer Therapeutics Delivery and Imaging

Cancer theranostics developed through nanoengineering applications are essential for targeted oncologic interventions in the new era of personalized and precision medicine. Recently, small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) have emerged as an attractive nanoengineering platform for tumor-directed anticancer therapeutic delivery and imaging of malignant tumors. These natural nanoparticles have multiple advantages over synthetic nanoparticle-based delivery systems, such as intrinsic targeting ability, less immunogenicity, and a prolonged circulation time. Since the inception of sEVs as a viable replacement for liposomes (synthetic nanoparticles) as a drug delivery vehicle, many studies have attempted to further the therapeutic efficacy of sEVs. This article discusses engineering strategies for sEVs using physical and chemical methods to enhance their anticancer therapeutic delivery performance. We review physio-chemical techniques of effective therapeutic loading into sEV, sEV surface engineering for targeted entry of therapeutics, and its cancer environment sensitive release inside the cells/organ. Next, we also discuss the novel hybrid sEV systems developed by a combination of sEVs with lipid and metal nanoparticles to garner each component's benefits while overcoming their drawbacks. The article extensively analyzes multiple sEV labeling techniques developed and investigated for live tracking or imaging sEVs. Finally, we discuss the theranostic potential of engineered sEVs in future cancer care regimens.

Crystal Engineering of a New Hexafluorogermanate Pillared Hybrid Ultramicroporous Material Delivers Enhanced Acetylene Selectivity

Hybrid ultramicroporous materials (HUMs), metal-organic platforms that incorporate inorganic pillars, are a promising class of porous solids. A key area of interest for such materials is gas separation, where HUMs have already established benchmark performances. Thanks to their ready compositional modularity, we report the design and synthesis of a new HUM, GEFSIX-21-Cu, incorporating the ligand pypz (4-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)pyridine, 21) and GeF62- pillaring anions. GEFSIX-21-Cu delivers on two fronts: first, it displays an exceptionally high C2H2 adsorption capacity (≥5 mmol g-1) which is paired with low uptake of CO2 (<2 mmol g-1), and, second, a low enthalpy of adsorption for C2H2 (ca. 32 kJ mol-1). This combination is rarely seen in the C2H2 selective physisorbents reported thus far, and not observed in related isostructural HUMs featuring pypz and other pillaring anions. Dynamic column breakthrough experiments for 1:1 and 2:1 C2H2/CO2 mixtures revealed GEFSIX-21-Cu to selectively separate C2H2 from CO2, yielding ≥99.99% CO2 effluent purities. Temperature-programmed desorption experiments revealed full sorbent regeneration in <35 min at 60 °C, reinforcing HUMs as potentially technologically relevant materials for strategic gas separations.

Fabrication of Oriented Polycrystalline MOF Superstructures

The field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has progressed beyond the design and exploration of powdery and single-crystalline materials. A current challenge is the fabrication of organized superstructures that can harness the directional properties of the individual constituent MOF crystals. To date, the progress in the fabrication methods of polycrystalline MOF superstructures has led to close-packed structures with defined crystalline orientation. By controlling the crystalline orientation, the MOF pore channels of the constituent crystals can be aligned along specific directions: these systems possess anisotropic properties including enhanced diffusion along specific directions, preferential orientation of guest species, and protection of functional guests. In this perspective, we discuss the current status of MOF research in the fabrication of oriented polycrystalline superstructures focusing on the specific crystalline directions of orientation. Three methods are examined in detail: the assembly from colloidal MOF solutions, the use of external fields for the alignment of MOF particles, and the heteroepitaxial ceramic-to-MOF growth. This perspective aims at promoting the progress of this field of research and inspiring the development of new protocols for the preparation of MOF systems with oriented pore channels, to enable advanced MOF-based devices with anisotropic properties.

Study of Drug Delivery Using Purely Organic Macrocyclic Containers-Cucurbit[7]uril and Pillararene

An impaired immune system is the root of various human ailments provoking the urge to find vehicle-mediated quick delivery of small drug molecules and other vital metabolites to specific tissues and organs. Thus, drug delivery strategies are in need of improvement in therapeutic efficacy. It can be achieved only by increasing the drug-loading capacity, increasing the sustained release of a drug to its target site, easy relocation of drug molecules associated with facile complexation-induced properties of molecular vehicles, and high stimuli-responsive drug administration. Supramolecular drug delivery systems (SDDS) provide a much needed robust yet facile platform for fabricating innovative drug nanocarriers assembled by thermodynamically noncovalent interaction with the tunable framework and above-mentioned properties. Measures of cytotoxicity and biocompatibility are the two main criteria that lie at the root of any promising medicinal applications. This Review features significant advancements in (i) supramolecular host-guest complexation using cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]), (ii) encapsulation of the drug and its delivery application tailored for CB[7], (iii) self-assembly of supramolecular amphiphiles, (iv) supramolecular guest relay using host-protein nanocavities, (v) pillararene (a unique macrocyclic host)-mediated SDDS for the delivery of smart nanodrugs for siRNA, fluorescent molecules, and insulin for juvenile diabetes. Furthermore, fundamental questions and future hurdles related to smart SDDS based on CB[7] and pillararenes and their future promising breakthrough implementations are also distinctly outlined in this Review.

Multifunctional nano MOF drug delivery platform in combination therapy

Recent preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated that for cancer treatment, combination therapies are more effective than monotherapies in reducing drug-related toxicity, decreasing drug resistance, and improving therapeutic efficacy. With the rapid development of nanotechnology, the combination of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and multi-mode therapy offers a realistic possibility to further improve the shortcomings of cancer treatment. This article focuses on the latest developments, achievements, and treatment strategies of representative multifunctional MOF combination therapies for cancer treatment in recent years, which include not only bimodal combination therapies, but also multi-modal synergistic therapies, further demonstrating the effectiveness and superiority of the MOF drug delivery systems in cancer treatment.

Aluminum-Porphyrin Metal-Organic Frameworks for Visible-Light Photocatalytic and Sonophotocatalytic Cr(VI) Reduction

In this study, four isostructural aluminum-based porphyrin metal-organic frameworks [Al-TCPP(M), M = H2 and Zn] with different morphologies and sizes were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. By adjusting the hydrothermal reaction time and the types of porphyrin ligands, Al-TCPP(M) MOFs exhibited diverse morphologies including tetragonal, rectangular, and carambola-like phase. In view of the introduction of porphyrin ligands and the strong coordination effect of Al-O units, Al-TCPP(M) MOFs exhibited good chemical stability, broad visible light harvesting capability, and fast photogenerated charge response. Four Al-TCPP(M) MOFs exhibited excellent photocatalytic activities for Cr(VI) in aqueous solution. Notably, the regulation to the nanoscale carambola-like morphology of Al-TCPP MOFs and metallization of the porphyrin ligand promoted the Cr(VI) photoreduction reaction where the catalytic activity of metallic carambola-like Al-TCPP increased 1.7 times compared to that of nonmetallic tetragonal MOFs. With the assistance of sonophotocatalysis, the Cr(VI) average reduction rates reached 0.658, 0.542, 0.785, and 0.629 mg·L-1·min-1 for Al-TCPP(H2)-24h, Al-TCPP(H2)-72h, Al-TCPP(Zn)-24h, and Al-TCPP(Zn)-72h, which are 1.2-1.4 times higher than that of photocatalysis. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, electronic spin resonance, and fluorescence spectroscopy experiments demonstrated that the synergistic effect of photochemistry and sonochemistry promoted the transfer of photogenerated electrons from Al-TCPP(M) to Cr(VI), thus enhancing the catalytic activity. The combination of the sonophotocatalytic technology with aluminum-porphyrin MOFs may become an effective strategy to improve MOF-based photocatalytic systems.

Recent advances in metal-organic frameworks: Synthesis, application and toxicity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of crystalline porous hybrid materials with high porosity, large specific surface area and adjustable channel structure and biocompatibility, which are being investigated with increasing interest for energy storage and conversion, gas adsorption/separation, catalysis, sensing and biomedicine. However, the practical applications of MOFs make them release into the environment inevitable, posing a threat to humans and organisms. In this article, we cover advances in the currently available MOFs synthesis methods and the emerging applications of MOFs, especially in the biomedical field (therapeutic agents and bioimaging). Additionally, after evaluating the current status of main exposure routes and affecting factors in the field of MOFs-toxicity, the molecular mechanism is also clarified and identified. Knowledge gaps are identified from such a summarization and frontier development are explored for MOFs. Afterwards, we also present the limitations, challenges, and future perspectives in the study of the entire life cycle of MOFs. This review emphasizes the need for a more targeted discussion of the latest, widely used and effective versatile material class in order to exploit the full potential of high-performance and non-toxicity MOFs in the future.

Sono-processes: Emerging systems and their applicability within the (bio-)medical field

Sonochemistry, although established in various fields, is still an emerging field finding new effects of ultrasound on chemical systems and are of particular interest for the biomedical field. This interdisciplinary area of research explores the use of acoustic waves with frequencies ranging from 20 kHz to 1 MHz to induce physical and chemical changes. By subjecting liquids to ultrasonic waves, sonochemistry has demonstrated the ability to accelerate reaction rates, alter chemical reaction pathways, and change physical properties of the system while operating under mild reaction conditions. It has found its way into diverse industries including food processing, pharmaceuticals, material science, and environmental remediation. This review provides an overview of the principles, advancements, and applications of sonochemistry with a particular focus on the domain of (bio-)medicine. Despite the numerous benefits sonochemistry has to offer, most of the research in the (bio-)medical field remains in the laboratory stage. Translation of these systems into clinical practice is complex as parameters used for medical ultrasound are limited and toxic side effects must be minimized in order to meet regulatory approval. However, directing attention towards the applicability of the system in clinical practice from the early stages of research holds significant potential to further amplify the role of sonochemistry in clinical applications.

Controlling Multi-Drug-Resistant Traits of Salmonella Obtained from Retail Poultry Shops Using Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) as a Novel Technique

Salmonella spp. is considered one of the most important causes of food-borne illness globally. Poultry and its products are usually incriminated in its spread. Treatment with antibiotics is the first choice to deal with such cases; however, multi-drug resistance and biofilm formation have been recorded in animals and humans. This study aimed to detect the antibiotic profile of isolated traits from different sources and to find innovative alternatives, such as MOFs. A total of 350 samples were collected from randomly selected retailed poultry shops in Beni-Suef Province, Egypt. Their antimicrobial susceptibility against eight different antibiotics was tested, and multi-drug resistance was found in most of them. Surprisingly, promising results toward MOF were detected. Cu/Ni/Co-MOF (MOF3) showed superior antibacterial efficiency to Cu/Ni-MOF (MOF2) and Cu-MOF (MOF1) at p value ≤ 0.01. These findings highlight the tendency of Salmonella spp. to develop MDR to most of the antibiotics used in the field and the need to find new alternatives to overcome it, as well as confirming the ability of the environment to act as a source of human and animal affection.

Biomimetic and bioorthogonal nanozymes for biomedical applications

Nanozymes mimic the function of enzymes, which drive essential intracellular chemical reactions that govern biological processes. They efficiently generate or degrade specific biomolecules that can initiate or inhibit biological processes, regulating cellular behaviors. Two approaches for utilizing nanozymes in intracellular chemistry have been reported. Biomimetic catalysis replicates the identical reactions of natural enzymes, and bioorthogonal catalysis enables chemistries inaccessible in cells. Various nanozymes based on nanomaterials and catalytic metals are employed to attain intended specific catalysis in cells either to mimic the enzymatic mechanism and kinetics or expand inaccessible chemistries. Each nanozyme approach has its own intrinsic advantages and limitations, making them complementary for diverse and specific applications. This review summarizes the strategies for intracellular catalysis and applications of biomimetic and bioorthogonal nanozymes, including a discussion of their limitations and future research directions.

A highly stable terbium(III) metal-organic framework MOF-76(Tb) for hydrogen storage and humidity sensing

The present study described the synthesis and characterization of MOF-76(Tb) for hydrogen storage and humidity sensing applications. The structure and morphology of as-synthesized material were studied using powder X-ray diffraction, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. The crystal structure of MOF-76(Tb) consists of terbium(III) and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate(-III) ions, one coordinated aqua ligand and one crystallization N,N´-dimethylformamide molecule. The polymeric framework of MOF-76(Tb) contains 1D sinusoidally shaped channels with sizes of 6.6 × 6.6 Å propagating along c crystallographic axis. The thermogravimetric analysis of the prepared material exhibited thermal stability up to 600 °C. At 77 K and pressure up to 20 bar; 0.6 wt.% hydrogen storage capacity for MOF-76(Tb) was observed. Finally, the humidity sensing measurements (water adsorption experiments) were performed, and the results indicate that MOF-76(Tb) is not a suitable material for moisture sensing applications.

Design of a robust and strong-acid MOF platform for selective ammonium recovery and proton conductivity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are potential candidates for the platform of the solid acid; however, no MOF has been reported that has both aqueous ammonium stability and a strong acid site. This manuscript reports a highly stable MOF with a cation exchange site synthesized by the reaction between zirconium and mellitic acid under a high concentration of ammonium cations (NH4+). Single-crystal XRD analysis of the MOF revealed the presence of four free carboxyl groups of the mellitic acid ligand, and the high first association constant (pKa1) of one of the carboxyl groups acts as a monovalent ion-exchanging site. NH4+ in the MOF can be reversibly exchanged with proton (H+), sodium (Na+), and potassium (K+) cations in an aqueous solution. Moreover, the uniform nanospace of the MOF provides the acid site for selective NH4+ recovery from the aqueous mixture of NH4+ and Na+, which could solve the global nitrogen cycle problem. The solid acid nature of the MOF also results in the proton conductivity reaching 1.34 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 55 °C by ion exchange from NH4+ to H+.

Interfacial chemistries in metal-organic framework (MOF)/covalent-organic framework (COF) hybrids

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been attracting tremendous attention in various applications due to their unique structural properties. Recent interest has been focused on their combination as hybrids to enable the engineering of new classes of frameworks with complementary properties. This review gives a comprehensive summary on the interfacial chemistries in MOF/COF hybrids, which play critical roles in their hybridization. The challenges and perspectives in the field of MOF/COF hybrids are also provided to inspire more efforts in diversifying this hybrid family and their cross-disciplinary applications.

A Lamellar Zn-Based Coordination Polymer Showing Increasing Photoluminescence upon Dehydration

The present study reports on a 2D lamellar coordination polymer (CP) of {[Zn(µ3-pmdc)(H2O)]·H2O}n formula (pmdc = pyrimidine-4,6-dicarboxylate). This CP is synthesized under an appropriate acid-base reaction between the gently mortared reagents in the solid state through a solvent-free procedure that avoids the presence of concomitant byproducts. The X-ray crystal structure reveals the occurrence of Zn2 entities connected through carboxylate groups of pmdc, which behave as triconnected nodes, giving rise to six-membered ring-based layers that are piled up through hydrogen bonding interactions. In addition to a routine physico-chemical characterization, the thermal evolution of the compound has been studied by combining thermogravimetric and thermodiffractometric data. The photoluminescence properties are characterized in the solid state and the processes governing the spectra are described using time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) with two different approaches employing different program packages. The emissive capacity of the material is further analyzed according to the dehydration and decreasing temperature of the polycrystalline sample.

Exploring the Effect of Different Secondary Building Units as Lewis Acid Sites in MOF Materials for the CO2 Cycloaddition Reaction

In order to explore the catalytic effect of different Lewis acid sites (LASs) in the CO2 cycloaddition reaction, different secondary building units and N-rich organic ligand 4,4',4″-s-triazine-1,3,5-triyltri-p-aminobenzoate were assembled to construct six reported MOF materials: [Cu3(tatab)2(H2O)3]·8DMF·9H2O (1), [Cu3(tatab)2(H2O)3]·7.5H2O (2), [Zn4O(tatab)2]·3H2O·17DMF (3), [In3O(tatab)2(H2O)3](NO3)·15DMA (4), [Zr6O4(OH)7(tatab)(Htatab)3(H2O)3]·xGuest (5), and [Zr6O4(OH)4(tatab)4(H2O)3]·xGuest (6) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, and DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide). Large pore sizes of compound 2 enhance the concentration of substrates, and the multi-active sites inside its framework synergistically promote the process of the CO2 cycloaddition reaction. Such advantages endow compound 2 with the best catalytic performance among the six compounds and surpass many of the reported MOF-based catalysts. Meanwhile, the comparison of the catalytic efficiency indicated that Cu-paddlewheel and Zn4O display better catalytic performances than In3O and Zr6 cluster. The experiments investigate the catalytic effects of LAS types and prove that it is feasible to improve CO2 fixation property by introducing multi-active sites into MOFs.

Advances in surface-modified nanometal-organic frameworks for drug delivery

Nanometal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) are porous network structures composed of metal ions or metal clusters through self-assembly. NMOFs have been considered as a promising nano-drug delivery system due to their unique properties such as pore and flexible structures, large specific surface areas, surface modifiability, non-toxic and degradable properties. However, NMOFs face a series complex environment during in vivo delivery. Therefore, surface functionalization of NMOFs is vital to ensure that the structure of NMOFs remain stable during delivery, and can overcome physiological barriers to deliver drugs more accurately to specific sites, and achieve controllable release. In this review, the first part summarizes the physiological barriers that NMOFs faced during drug delivery after intravenous injection and oral administration. The second part summarizes the current main ways to load drugs into NMOFs, mainly including pore adsorption, surface attachment, formation of covalent/coordination bonds between drug molecules and NMOFs, and in situ encapsulation. The third part is the main review part of this paper, which summarizes the surface modification methods of NMOFs used in recent years to overcome the physiological barriers and achieve effective drug delivery and disease therapy, which are mainly divided into physical modifications and chemical modifications. Finally, the full text is summarized and prospected, with the hope to provide ideas for the future development of NMOFs as drug delivery.

Protein-Precoated Surface of Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticles for Targeted Delivery

Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles have recently emerged as a promising vehicle for drug delivery with high porosity and feasibility. However, employing a MOF-based drug delivery system remains a challenge due to the difficulty in controlling interfaces of particles in a biological environment. In this paper, protein corona-blocked Zr₆ -based MOF (PCN-224) nanoparticles are presented for targeted cancer therapy with high efficiency. The unmodified PCN-224 surface is precoated with glutathione transferase (GST)-fused targetable affibody (GST-Afb) proteins via simple mixing conjugations instead of chemical modifications that can induce the impairment of proteins. GST-Afb proteins are shown to stably protect the surface of PCN-224 particles in a specific orientation with GST adsorbed onto the porous surface and the GST-linked Afb posed outward, minimizing the unwanted interfacial interactions of particles with external biological proteins. The Afb-directed cell-specific targeting ability of particles and consequent induction of cell death is demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo by using two kinds of Afb, which targets the surface membrane receptor, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) or epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). This study provides insight into the way of regulating the protein-adhesive surface of MOF nanoparticles and designing a more effective MOF-hosted targeted delivery system.

Ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on metal-organic framework for selective and sensitive detection of CO32

Carbonate ion (CO₃^2-) is an anion essential for the maintenance of life activities and is of great importance to human health. Here, a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe Eu/CDs@UiO-66-(COOH)₂ (ECU) was prepared by introducing europium ions (Eu³⁺) and carbon dots (CDs) into the UiO-66-(COOH)₂ parent framework under the guidance of a post-synthetic modification strategy and used for the detection of CO₃^2- ion in the aqueous environment. Interestingly, when CO₃^2- ions were added to the ECU suspension, the characteristic emission of carbon dots at 439 nm was significantly enhanced, while the characteristic emission of Eu³⁺ ions at 613 nm was reduced. Therefore, the detection of CO₃^2- ions can be realized through the peak height ratio of the two emissions. The probe had a low detection limit (about 1.08 μM) and a wide linear range (0-350 μM) for the detection of carbonate. In addition, the presence of CO₃^2- ions can cause a significant ratiometric luminescence response and resulted obvious red-to-blue color shift of the ECU under UV light, which will facilitate visual analysis by the naked eye.

Hyaluronic acid oligosaccharide-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoparticles loaded with oxaliplatin as a targeted drug-delivery system for colorectal cancer therapy

Aim: Exploring a nanoscale targeted drug-delivery system (DDS) for oxaliplatin (Oxa) to improve its therapeutic effect in colorectal cancer. Materials & methods: Nanoparticles were prepared using zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) modified by hyaluronic acid oligosaccharide (oHA) as an Oxa carrier (oHA@ZIF-8@Oxa). After multiple characterizations, the therapeutic efficacy of the DDS was evaluated by cytotoxicity testing and a nude mouse tumor transplantation experiment in vivo. Results: The results of characterization showed the DDS was homogeneous in morphology and uniform in dispersion. The drug loading of Oxa was 11.82% and the encapsulation efficiency was 90.8%. The cytotoxicity test and in vivo experiments showed that oHA@ZIF-8@Oxa had a more significant anticolorectal cancer effect than free Oxa. Conclusion: This work offers a promising potential DDS for enhancing the anticolorectal cancer effect of Oxa.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of MIL-88(Fe) conjugated starch-Fe3O4 nanocomposite: A safe antibacterial carrier for controlled release of tetracycline

A constructing antibiotic carrier with a sustained release profile is a promising method to stop long-term bacterial infection, which is of ideal interest in different biomedical fields. To end this, the present study aims to design a novel carrier based on the modification of biopolymeric starch for the rising possible interaction between carrier and antibiotic agent. We established an in-situ ultrasound-assisted method was applied to grow and create MIL-88(Fe) framework in the structure of magnetic polysaccharide (i.e., St/Fe₃O₄) synthesized by precipitation method resulting in St/Fe₃O₄/MIL-88(Fe) nanocomposite. It was loaded with a high amount of Tetracycline (TC) through its immersion into the TC aqueous solution. The release profile of TC-loaded St/Fe₃O₄/MIL-88(Fe) displays a lower initial burst release (about 26 % after 12 h) and followed by a controlled and sustained release (about 73 % up to 168 h) in the simulated physiological environment at pH 7.4. The in vitro cytotoxicity showed good cytocompatibility against Human skin fibroblast (HFF-1) cells. TC-loaded St/Fe₃O₄/MIL-88(Fe) showed higher antibacterial activity against both S. aureus and E. coli with the MIC value of 64 and 128 μg·mL^-1, respectively.

Constructing functional metal-organic frameworks by ligand design for environmental applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unique physical and chemical properties are composed of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands, including high porosity, large specific surface area, tunable structure and functionality, which have been widely used in chemical sensing, environmental remediation, and other fields. Organic ligands have a significant impact on the performance of MOFs. Selecting appropriate types, quantities and properties of ligands can well improve the overall performance of MOFs, which is one of the critical issues in the synthesis of MOFs. This article provides a comprehensive review of ligand design strategies for functional MOFs from the number of different types of organic ligands. Single-, dual- and multi-ligand design strategies are systematically presented. The latest advances of these functional MOFs in environmental applications, including pollutant sensing, pollutant separation, and pollutant degradation are further expounded. Furthermore, an outlook section of providing some insights on the future research problems and prospects of functional MOFs is highlighted with the purpose of conquering current restrictions by exploring more innovative approaches.

Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 Triggers the Inhibition of Arginine Biosynthesis to Combat Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus

The self-preservation and intelligent survival abilities of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) result in the ineffective treatment of many antibiotics. Nano-drug delivery systems have emerged as a new strategy to overcome MRSA infection. ZIF-8 nanoparticles (ZIF-8 NPs) exhibit good antibacterial activities, while its molecular mechanisms are largely elusive. In this study, the ZIF-8 NPs are prepared using the room temperature solution reaction method. The values of minimum inhibitory concentration of ZIF-8 NPs against Escherichia coli and MRSA isolates are 25 and 12.5 µg mL^-1 , respectively. Transcriptome and metabonomic analyses reveal that ZIF-8 NPs could trigger the inhibition of arginine biosynthesis pathway and the production of ROS, which lead to dysfunctional tricarboxylic acid cycle and disruption of cell membrane integrity, eventually killing MRSA isolates. Moreover, ZIF-8 NPs show desirable treatment and repair effects on mice model of MRSA isolates wound infected-model. The results, for the first time, reveal that the inhibition of arginine biosynthesis mediates the production of ROS and energy metabolism dysfunction contributes to the antibacterial ability of ZIF-8 NPs against MRSA. This study offers a new insight into ZIF-8 NPs combating MRSA isolates.

2D Organic Materials: Status and Challenges

In the past few decades, 2D layer materials have gradually become a central focus in materials science owing to their uniquely layered structural qualities and good optoelectronic properties. However, in the development of 2D materials, several disadvantages, such as limited types of materials and the inability to synthesize large-scale materials, severely confine their application. Therefore, further exploration of new materials and preparation methods is necessary to meet technological developmental needs. Organic molecular materials have the advantage of being customizable. Therefore, if organic molecular and 2D materials are combined, the resulting 2D organic materials would have excellent optical and electrical properties. In addition, through this combination, the free design and large-scale synthesis of 2D materials can be realized in principle. Furthermore, 2D organic materials exhibit excellent properties and unique functionalities along with great potential for developing sensors, biomedicine, and electronics. In this review, 2D organic materials are divided into five categories. The preparation methods and material properties of each class of materials are also described in detail. Notably, to comprehensively understand each material's advantages, the latest research applications for each material are presented in detail and summarized. Finally, the future development and application prospects of 2D organic materials are briefly discussed.

Construction of Metal-Organic Framework Films via Crosslinking-Induced Assembly

The construction of metal-organic framework (MOF) films is a crucial step for integrating them into technical applications. However, due to the crystallization nature, it is difficult to grow most MOFs spontaneously or process them into films. Here, a convenient strategy is demonstrated for constructing MOF films by using modulators to achieve homogeneous assembly of MOF clusters. Small clusters in the early growth steps of MOFs can be stabilized by modulators to form fluidic precursors with good processibility. Then, simple removal of modulators will trigger the crosslinking of MOF clusters and lead to the formation of continuous films. This strategy is universal for the fabrication of several types of MOF films with large scale and controllable thickness, which can be deposited on a variety of substrates as well as can be patterned in micro/nano resolution. Additionally, versatile composite MOF films can be easily synthesized by introducing functional materials during the crosslinking process, which brings them broader application prospects.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Colloidal Particle Synthesis, Assembly, and Application

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) assembled from metal nodes and organic ligands have received significant attention over the past two decades for their fascinating porous properties and broad applications. Colloidal MOFs (CMOFs) not only inherit the intrinsic properties of MOFs, but can also serve as building blocks for self-assembly to make functional materials. Compared to bulk MOFs, the colloidal size of CMOFs facilitates further manipulation of CMOF particles in a single or collective state in a liquid medium. The resulting crystalline order obtained by self-assembly in position and orientation can effectively improve performance. In this review, we summarize the latest developments of CMOFs in synthesis strategies, self-assembly methods, and related applications. Finally, we discuss future challenges and opportunities of CMOFs in synthesis and assembly, by which we hope that CMOFs can be further developed into new areas for a wider range of applications.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Based Chemosensor for Ultrafast and Ultrasensitive Detection of Pd2+ Ions in Water, Real Specimens, and Test Strips

A new ultrasensitive and ultrafast Al(III) metal-organic-framework (MOF)-based probe (1) was constructed to detect Pd²⁺ ions. Extremely selective recognition of Pd²⁺ ion was demonstrated by the guest-free compound 1 (called 1') using a fluorescence signal. The quenching in the fluorescence signal was observed due to the weak interaction between the linker alkyne-π bond and Pd²⁺. The mechanism of isophthalic alkyne-π and Pd²⁺ interaction was systematically examined with the help of isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis spectroscopy. The response time of the MOF for sensing of Pd²⁺ was 30 s, which is the lowest response time for MOF-based Pd²⁺ sensing to date, with an ultralow detection limit (102 nM) and Stern-Volmer constant (4.39 × 10³ M^-1), evidencing the outstanding ability to sense Pd²⁺ ion by this probe. The Pd²⁺ detection limit falls among the lowest values. Activated MOF (1') also showed considerable recyclability up to five steps with a constant sensing ability. In different water resources (Milli-Q water, lake water, river water, and tap water), the probe also showed excellent sensing ability. A paper-strip device was developed for the applicability of our material for the real field sensing application of Pd²⁺. The relevance of 1' is not only up to Pd²⁺, but it could also sense palladium in other possible oxidation states.

Selective Low-Level Detection of a Perilous Nitroaromatic Compound Using Tailor-Made Cd(II)-Based Coordination Polymers: Study of Photophysical Properties and Effect of Functional Groups

Three coordination polymers (CPs 1-3) are prepared based on diverse electron-donating properties and coordination arrangements of conjugated ligands. Interestingly, this is also reflected in their photophysical properties. The distinguishable high emissive nature of the luminescent coordination polymer shows its potentiality toward the detection of the perilous substance 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) or picric acid (PA). TNP has a higher propensity among explosive nitroaromatic compounds (epNACs) due to its significant π···π interaction with the free benzene moieties present in the CPs. Among CPs 1-3, 2 exhibits the highest sensitivity and selectivity toward TNP because of the most favorable π-π stacking with the conjugated organic linker. The calculated limit of detection (LOD) and corresponding quenching constant (K_SV) from the Stern-Volmer (SV) plot for 1, 2, and 3 are found to be 0.68 μM and 7.49 × 10⁴ M^-1, 0.41 μM and 8.01 × 10⁴ M^-1, and 1.18 μM and 8.1 × 10⁴ M^-1, respectively. The fluorescence quenching mechanism is also highly influenced by their structure and coordination arrangement.
