Abstract
This study presents the rare examples of S-heteroaryl tetradentate Pt(S^C^N^O) luminescent complexes (PtSZ and PtSZtBu) containing a Pt-S bond. The presence of the Pt-S bond allows the novel Pt(S^C^N^O) complexes to exhibit temperature-dependent phosphorescent emission behavior. The PtSZtBu exhibits dual-emission phenomena and biexponential transient decay spectra above 250 K, indicating the presence of two minimal excited states in the potential energy surface (PES) of the T1 state. Through complementary experimental and computational studies, we have identified changes in orbital composition between Pt(dxy)-S(px) and Pt(dyz)-S(pz) in excited states with increasing temperature. This results in two energy minima, enabling the excited states to decay selectively and radiatively at different temperatures. Consequently, this leads to remarkable steady-state and transient emission spectra changes. Our work not only provides valuable insights for the development of novel Pt-S bond-based tetradentate Pt(II) complexes but also enhances our understanding of the distinctive properties governed by the Pt-S bond.

Abstract
Described here are sterically hindered tetradentate [Pt(O^N^C^N)] emitters (Pt-1, Pt-2, and Pt-3) developed for stable and high-performance green phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). These Pt(II) emitters exhibit strong saturated green phosphorescence (λmax = 517-531 nm) in toluene and mCP thin films with emission quantum yields as high as 0.97, radiative rate constants (kr) as high as 4.4-5.3 × 105 s-1 and reduced excimer emission, and with a preferential horizontally oriented transition dipole ratio of up to 84%. Theoretical calculations show that p-(hetero)arene substituents at the periphery of the ligand scaffolds in Pt-1, Pt-2, and Pt-3 can i) enhance the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between the lower singlet excited states and the T1 state, and S0→Sn (n = 1 or 2) transition dipole moment, and ii) introducing additional SOC activity and the bright 1ILCT[π(carbazole)→π*(N^C^N)] excited state (Pt-2 and Pt-3), which are the main contributors to the increased kr values. Utilizing these tetradentate Pt(II) emitters, green phosphorescent OLEDs are fabricated with narrow-band electroluminescence (FWHM down to 36 nm), high external quantum efficiency, current efficiency up to 27.6% and 98.7 cd A-1, and an unprecedented device lifetime (LT95) of up to 9270 h at 1000 cd m-2 under laboratory conditions.

Abstract
A new class of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) pyridine-/pyrazine-containing tetradentate C^C^N^N gold(III) complexes have been designed and synthesized. Displaying photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of up to 0.77 in solid-state thin films, these complexes showed at-least a six-fold increase in the radiative decay rate constant (kr) in toluene upon increasing temperature from 210 to 360 K. Using variable-temperature (VT) ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy, the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) processes were directly observed and the activation parameters were determined, in line with the results of the Boltzmann two-level model fittings, in which the energy separation values between the lowest-lying singlet excited state (S1) and the lowest-lying triplet excited state (T1), ΔE(S1-T1), of these complexes were estimated to be in the range of 0.16-0.18 eV. Through strategic modification of the position of the electron-donating -tBu substituent in the cyclometalating ligand, the permanent dipole moments (PDMs) of these tetradentate gold(III) emitters could be manipulated to enhance their horizontal alignment in the emitting layer of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Consequently, the resulting vacuum-deposited OLEDs demonstrated a 30% increase in the theoretical out-coupling efficiency (ηout), as well as promising electroluminescence (EL) performance with maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of up to 15.7%.

Abstract
A series of novel tetradentate 6/6/6 Pt(II) complexes containing an 8-phenylquinoline-benzo[d]imidazole-carbazole ligand was designed; the Pt(II) complexes could be synthesized by metalizing the corresponding ligand with K2PtCl4 in high isolated yields of 60-90%. Experimental and theoretical studies suggested that the ligand modification of the quinoline moieties of the Pt(II) complexes could tune their electrochemical, photophysical, and excited-state properties. Notably, all the Pt(II) complexes exhibited highly electrochemical stabilities with reversible redox processes except the quasi-reversible reduction of PtYL3. The large π-conjugation of the ligand together with increased metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (3MLCT) characters in T1 states enabled the Pt(II) complexes to show broad Gaussian-type NIR emission spectra with high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies of 1.2-1.5% and short τ of 0.8-1.5 μs in dichloromethane at room temperature. This work should provide a valuable reference for the design and development of monomer NIR emitters.

Abstract
We demonstrated efficient simplified orange and white organic light-emitting devices based on a platinum(II) complex Tetra-Pt-N. The maximum current efficiency achieved from the optimized orange device was 57.6 cd/A. The emission mechanism for the system of Tetra-Pt-N doped into 4,4'-bis(arbazole-9-yl)biphenyl was discussed. Moreover, a high-efficiency and simplified white device was fabricated by introducing an ultra-thin blue phosphorescent emission layer. The white device with a maximum current efficiency of 41.9 cd/A showed excellent stable spectra and low efficiency roll-off.

Abstract
Pt(II) complexes are promising phosphorescent materials for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) applications in the fields of display, lighting, healthcare, aerospace, and so on. A series of novel biphenyl (bp)-based tetradentate 6/5/6 Pt(II) emitters using oxygen or carbon as a linking atom was designed and developed. The intermolecular interactions in crystal packing, electrochemical, and photophysical properties of the bp-based Pt(II) emitters and also their excited-state properties were systematically studied, which could be effectively regulated by ligand modification through linking group control; however, their emission spectra nearly showed no change. All the bp-based Pt(II) emitters exhibited vibronically featured emission spectra with dominant peaks at 502-505 nm and photoluminescent quantum yields of 24-34% in dichloromethane solution. Green OLED using Pt(bp-12) as an emitter achieved a maximum brightness (Lmax) of 16,644 cd/m2.

Abstract
Luminescent copper(I) complexes showing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) have developed to attractive emitter materials for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, we study the brightly luminescent dimer Cu2Cl2(P∩N)2 (P∩N = diphenylphosphanyl-6-methyl-pyridine), which shows both TADF and phosphorescence at ambient temperature. A solution-processed OLED with a device structure ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PYD2: Cu2Cl2(P∩N)2/DPEPO (10 nm)/TPBi (40 nm)/LiF (1.2 nm)/Al (100 nm) shows warm white emission with moderate external quantum efficiency (EQE). Methods for EQE increase strategies are discussed.

Abstract
A series of platinum(II) complexes supported by terphenyl diacetylide as well as diimine or bis-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been prepared. The diacetylide ligands adopt a cis coordination mode featuring non-planar terphenyl moieties as revealed by X-ray crystallographic analyses. The electrochemical, photophysical and photochemical properties of these platinum(II) complexes have been investigated. These platinum(II) diimine complexes show broad emission with peak maxima from 566 nm to 706 nm, with two of them having emission quantum yields >60% and lifetimes <2 μs in solutions at room temperature, whereas the platinum(II) diacetylide complexes having bis-N-heterocyclic carbene instead of diimine ligand display photoluminescence with quantum yields of up to 28% in solutions and excited state lifetimes of up to 62 μs at room temperature. Application studies revealed that one of the complexes can catalyze photoinduced aerobic dehydrogenation of alcohols and alkenes, and a relatively non-toxic water-soluble Pt(II) complex displays anti-angiogenic activity.

Abstract
The accuracy and efficiency of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) excited state gradient calculations using the pseudospectral method are presented. TDDFT excited state geometry optimizations of the G2 test set molecules, the organic fluorophores with large Stokes shifts, and the Pt-complexes show that the pseudospectral method gives average errors of 0.01-0.1 kcal/mol for the TDDFT excited state energy, 0.02-0.06 pm for the bond length, and 0.02-0.12° for the bond angle when compared to the results from conventional TDDFT. TDDFT gradient calculations of fullerenes (Cn, n up to 540) with the B3LYP functional and 6-31G** basis set show that the pseudospectral method provides 8- to 14-fold speedups in the total wall clock time over the conventional methods. The pseudospectral TDDFT gradient calculations with a diffuse basis set give higher speedups than the calculations for the same basis set without diffuse functions included.

Abstract
Straightforward palladium(II) catalyzed direct cross-coupling reaction between decyl, (S)-2-methyl-butyl, and dodecyl N-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole thiophene (DPPT), including a 3-methoxy-thiophene derivative, and 6-bromo-2,2'-bipyridine afforded a series of mono- and bis-bipyridine substituted DPPT ligands 1-3. Complexation reactions with PtCl2(DMSO)2 provided ortho-metalated platinum(II) complexes 1-Pt and 2-Pt, together with the N^N^O complex 3d-Pt(N^N^O) resulted from the O-Me activation of the intermediary complex 3d-Pt(N^N). The ligand 1b and the mononuclear complexes 1a-Pt and 1b-Pt have been structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray structure, evidencing the establishment of numerous intermolecular π-π interactions in the solid state. Moreover, in the crystal structure of the model complex DMTB-Pt(N^N^O) (DMTB = 3,4-dimethoxy-(2,2'-bipyridine)) the chelating tridentate N^N^O mode is clearly evidenced. The chiral ligand 1b and its mononuclear complex 1b-Pt do not show any CD signal in solution, but they are CD active in the solid state with bisignate bands in the low energy region, opposite in sign between the ligand and the complex, suggesting helical supramolecular arrangement of the dpp chromophore in the solid state. Photophysical investigations demonstrate that all of the ligands are fluorescent with high quantum yields, while the emission is quenched for the complexes, except partially in 3d-Pt(N^N), very likely through an intersystem crossing mechanism promoted by the heavy metal. Density functional theory calculations support the differences observed between the absorption properties of the ligands, ortho- and non-ortho-metalated complexes. The highly fluorescent bipyridine ligands reported herein open the way toward multifunctional transition metal complexes and their use in organic electronics.

Abstract
Voltage-dependent, color-tunable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are appealing tools that can be used for the visualization of electronic output signal of sensors. Nonetheless, the literature-reported color-tunable OLEDs that have a simple single-cell device structure suffer from relatively low efficiency, pronounced efficiency roll-off, color-aging, and short operation lifetime, all of which limit their practical applications. Here, a novel co-host-in-double-emissive-layer (CHIDEL) device, designed to enhance the performance of color-tunable OLEDs with the use of a single tetradentate Pt[O^ N^ C^ N] emitter, is described. When Pt-X-2 is used as a single emitter in an optimized CHIDEL device, a white OLED with tunable Commission International de I'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates from (0.47, 0.44) at 3 V to (0.36, 0.48) at 11 V, a high color rendering index of 82, and high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of up to 20.75% can be achieved. By using Pt-X-4 as a single emitter, the voltage-dependent color-tunable CHIDEL device, with CIE coordinates shifted from (0.56, 0.43) at 3 V to (0.42, 0.55) at 11 V, demonstrates a high luminance of beyond 90 000 cd m-2 and a high EQE of 23.23% at a luminance of 1300 cd m-2 . A long-lifetime time to 90% of the initial luminance (LT90 ) of almost 20 000 h is demonstrated for the color-tunable OLED with Pt-X-4 emitting dopant.

Abstract
A series of dinuclear copper(I) N,C,N- and P,C,P-carbodiphosphorane (CDP) complexes using multidentate ligands CDP(Py)2 (1) and (CDP(CH2PPh2)2 (13) have been isolated and characterized. Detailed structural information was gained by single-crystal XRD analyses of nine representative examples. The common structural motive is the central double ylidic carbon atom with its characteristic two lone pairs involved in the binding of two geminal L-Cu(I) fragments at Cu-Cu distances in the range 2.55-2.67 Å. In order to enhance conformational rigidity within the characteristic Cu-C-Cu triangle, two types of chelating side arms were symmetrically attached to each phosphorus atom: two 2-pyridyl functions in ligand CDP(Py)2 (1) and its dinuclear copper complexes 2-9 and 11, as well as two diphenylphosphinomethylene functions in ligand CDP(CH2PPh2)2 (13) and its di- and mononuclear complexes 14-18. Neutral complexes were typically obtained via the reaction of 1 with Cu(I) species CuCl, CuI, and CuSPh or via the salt elimination reaction of [(CuCl)2(CDP(Py)2] (2) with sodium carbazolate. Cationic Cu(I) complexes were prepared upon treating 1 with two equivalents of [Cu(NCMe)4]PF6, followed by the addition of either two equivalents of an aryl phosphine (PPh3, P(C6H4OMe)3) or one equivalent of bisphosphine ligands bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl] ether (DPEPhos), 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene (XantPhos), or 1,1'-bis(diphenyl-phosphino) ferrocene (dppf). For the first time, carbodiphosphorane CDP(CH2PPh2)2 (13) could be isolated upon treating its precursor [CH(dppm)2]Cl (12) with NaNH2 in liquid NH3. A protonated and a deprotonated derivative of ligand 13 were prepared, and their coordination was compared to neutral CDP ligand 13. NMR analysis and DFT calculations reveal that the most stable tautomer of 13 does not show a CDP (or carbone) structure in its uncoordinated base form. For most of the prepared complexes, photoluminescence upon irradiation with UV light at room temperature was observed. Quantum yields (ΦPL) were determined to be 36% for dicationic [(CuPPh3)2(CDP(Py)2)](PF6)2 (4) and 60% for neutral [(CuSPh)2(CDP(CH2PPh2)2] (16).

Abstract
In this contribution, recent advances in new classes of efficient metal-TADF complexes, especially those of Au(I), Au(III), and W(VI), and their application in OLEDs are reviewed. The high performance (EQE = 25%) and long device operational lifetime (LT95 = 5,280 h) achieved in an OLED with tetradentate Au(III) TADF emitter reflect the competitiveness of this class of emitters for use in OLEDs with practical interest. The high EQE of 15.6% achieved in solution-processed OLED with W(VI) TADF emitter represents an alternative direction toward low-cost light-emitting materials. Finally, the design strategy of metal-TADF emitters and their next-stage development are discussed.

Abstract
White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) are superior to traditional incandescent light bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps in terms of their merits in ensuring pure white-light emission, low-energy consumption, large-area thin-film fabrication, etc. Unfortunately, WOLEDs based on multilayered or multicomponent (red, green, and blue (RGB)) emissive layers can suffer from some remarkable disadvantages, such as intricate device fabrication and voltage-dependent emission color, etc. Single molecules, which can emit white light, can be used to replace multiple emitters, leading to a simplified fabrication process, stable and reproducible WOLEDs. Recently, the performance of WOLEDs by using single molecules is catching up with that of the state-of-the-art devices fabricated by multicomponent emitters. Therefore, an increasing attention has been paid on single white-light-emitting materials for efficient WOLEDs. In this review, different mechanisms of white-light emission from a single molecule and the performance of single-molecule-based WOLEDs are collected and expounded, hoping to light up the interesting subject on single-molecule white-light-emitting materials, which have great potential as white-light emitters for illumination and lighting applications in the world.

Abstract
A series of neutral tetradentate Pt(II) complexes with fused 6/5/6 metallocycles and biphenyl (bp)-containing ligands have been designed and synthesized. All bridging atoms adopt nitrogens designed as an acridinyl group (Ac), an aza acridinyl group (AAc), and an aza carbazolyl group (ACz), which can effectively tune their LUMO energy levels. Their HOMO energy levels can be well-controlled through molecular modifications on the bp moieties with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups. These molecular modifications also have profound effects on the electrochemical and photophysical properties and photostabilities of the Pt(II) complexes. The ground-states and excited states are systematically studied by density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), and natural transition orbital (NTO) calculations. All the Pt(II) complexes exhibit admixed 3(LC/MLCT) characters in T1 states with various proportions, which are strongly structure-dependent. These 6/5/6 Pt(II) complexes demonstrate high quantum efficiencies in dichloromethane solutions (ΦPL = 27-51%) and in doped PMMA films (ΦPL = 36-52%) at room temperature with short luminescence lifetimes of 1.6-9.5 μs and 7.6-9.0 μs, respectively. They emit green light with dominant peaks of 512-529 nm in solutions and 512-524 nm in doped PMMA films, respectively. Importantly, Pt(bp-2) exhibits highly stable emission colors with the same dominant peaks at 512 nm in various matrixes and also demonstrates a long photostability lifetime, LT80, at 80% of initial luminance, of 190 min, which is doped in polystyrene films (5 wt %) excited by UV light of 375 nm at 500 W/m2. These studies indicate that these 6/5/6 Pt(II) complexes can act as good phosphorescent emitters for OLED applications and should provide a viable route for the development of efficient and stable Pt(II)-based phosphorescent emitters.

Abstract
Structurally robust tetradentate gold(III)-emitters have potent material applications but are rare and unprecedented for those displaying thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Herein, a novel synthetic route leading to the preparation of highly emissive, charge-neutral tetradentate [C^C^N^C] gold(III) complexes with 5-5-6-membered chelate rings has been developed through microwave-assisted C-H bond activation. These complexes show high thermal stability and with emission origin (3 IL, 3 ILCT, and TADF) tuned by varying the substituents of the C^C^N^C ligand. With phenoxazine/diphenylamine substituent, we prepared the first tetradentate gold(III) complexes that are TADF emitters with emission quantum yields of up to 94 % and emission lifetimes of down to 0.62 μs in deoxygenated toluene. These tetradentate AuIII TADF emitters showed good performance in vacuum-deposited OLEDs with maximum EQEs of up to 25 % and LT95 of up to 5280 h at 100 cd m-2 .

Abstract
New cycloplatinated N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) compounds with chelate diphosphines (P^P) as ancillary ligands: [Pt(R-C^C*)(P^P)]PF6 (R = H, P^P = dppm (1A), dppe (2A), dppbz (3A); R = CN, P^P = dppm (1B), dppe (2B), dppbz (3B)) have been prepared from the corresponding starting material [{Pt(R-C^C*)(μ-Cl)}2] (R = H, A, R = CN, B) and fully characterized. The new compound A has been prepared by a stepwise protocol. The photophysical properties of 1A-3A and 1B-3B have been widely studied and supported by the time-dependent-density functional theory. These compounds show an efficient blue (dppe, dppbz) or cyan (dppm) emission in PMMA films (5 wt %), with photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) ranging from 30% to 87% under an argon atmosphere. This emission has been assigned mainly to transitions from 3ILCT [π(NHC) → π*(NHC)] excited states with some 3LL'CT [π(NHC) → π*(P^P)] character. The electroluminescence of these materials in proof-of-concept solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes containing 3A and 3B as dopants was investigated. The CIE coordinates for devices based on 3A (0.22, 0.41) and 3B (0.24, 0.44) fit within the sky blue region.

Abstract
The realization of high-efficiency solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using phosphorescent tetradentate Pt(II) emitters and bipolar organic hosts is demonstrated in this work. To investigate the effect of organic host on the platinum dopant, the performances of solution-processed Pt-OLEDs with various combinations between four tetradentate Pt(II) emitters, including two newly developed tetra-Pt-S2 and tetra-Pt-S3 and three bipolar organic hosts m-TPAPy, o-TPAPy, and o-CzPy, have been analyzed and compared. Among the tetradentate Pt(II) complexes studied in this work, tetra-Pt-S3 exhibited the best electroluminescent performance attributable to its bulky molecular scaffold structure, high emission quantum yield, and good solubility in common organic solvents. High external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of up to 22.4% were achieved in the solution-processed OLED with tetra-Pt-S3 emitter and m-TPAPy host at the dopant concentration of 4 wt %. At a high luminance of 1000 cd m-2, the EQE of this device decreased slightly to 21.0%.

Abstract
Metal-TADF (thermally activated delayed fluorescence) emitters hold promise in the development of next generation light-emitting materials for display and lighting applications, examples of which are, however, largely confined to CuI and recently AuI , AgI , and AuIII emitters. Herein is described the design strategy for an unprecedented type of metal-TADF emitter based on inexpensive tungsten metal chelated with Schiff base ligand that exhibit high emission quantum yields of up to 56 % in solutions and 84 % in thin-film (5 wt % in 1,3-bis(N-carbazolyl)benzene, mCP) at room temperature. Femtosecond time-resolved emission (fs-TRE) spectroscopy and DFT calculations were undertaken to decipher the TADF properties. Solution-processed OLEDs fabricated with the W-TADF emitter demonstrated external quantum efficiency (EQE) and luminance of up to 15.6 % and 16890 cd m-2 , respectively.

Abstract
Two new cyclometalated platinum(ii) complexes ((TN3T)Pt(dptp), (4tfmppy)Pt(dptp)) with 2',6'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-2,3'-bipyridine (TN3T) and 4-trifluoromethylphenylpyridine (4tfmppy) as the cyclometalated ligands and the nitrogen heterocycle 2-(4,5-diphenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)phenol (dptp) as the ancillary ligand were developed. Both complexes are green phosphors with high photoluminescence quantum efficiency yields (λmax = 532 nm, Φp = 65% for (TN3T)Pt(dptp) and λmax = 502 nm, Φp = 71% for (4tfmppy)Pt(dptp)) in CH2Cl2 solutions at room temperature, respectively. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with single-emitting layer and double-emitting layer structures were fabricated with good performances. Particularly, the double-emitting layer device D2 based on the complex (4tfmppy)Pt(dptp) with 6 wt% doped concentration shows superior performances with a maximum EQE of 26.90% with mild efficiency roll-off. This study demonstrates that the ancillary ligand attached with a 4-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole group could facilitate charge trapping across the bulk of the device for efficient OLEDs.

Abstract
The three-fold bridged dinuclear Cu(I) complex Cu2(μ-I)2(1 N- n-butyl-5-diphenyl-phosphino-1,2,4-triazole)3, Cu2I2(P^N)3, shows bright thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) as well as phosphorescence at ambient temperature with a total quantum yield of 85% at an emission decay time of 7 μs. The singlet (S1)-triplet (T1) energy gap is as small as only 430 cm-1 (53 meV). Spin-orbit coupling induces a short-lived phosphorescence with a decay time of 52 μs ( T = 77 K) and a distinct zero-field splitting (ZFS) of T1 into substates by ∼2.5 cm-1 (0.3 meV). Below T ≈ 10 K, effects of spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) are observed and agree with the size of ZFS. According to the combined phosphorescence and TADF, the overall emission decay time is reduced by ∼13% as compared to the TADF-only process. The compound may potentially be applied in solution-processed OLEDs, exploiting both the singlet and triplet harvesting mechanisms.

Abstract
A new class of fused heterocyclic tridentate ligand-containing alkynylgold(III) complexes with tunable emission color has been successfully designed and synthesized. Structural modification of the σ-donating fused heterocyclic alkynyl ligands, including substituted fluorene, carbazole, and triphenylamine, enables a large spectral shift of about 110 nm (ca. 3310 cm-1 ) that covers the green to red region to be realized with the same tridentate ligand-containing alkynylgold(III) complexes in solid-state thin films. Interestingly, the energy of the excimeric emission can be controlled by the rational design of the fused heterocyclic alkynyl ligands. Superior solution-processable organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) with high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 12.2, 13.5, 9.3, and 5.2 % were obtained with green, yellow, orange, and red emission. These high EQE values are comparable to those of the vacuum-deposited OLEDs based on structurally related alkynylgold(III) complexes.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of seven novel backbone functionalized N-phenyl-1,3-thiazol-2-ylidene platinum(ii) complexes and their photophysical properties. Electronically diverse N-phenyl-1,3-thiazol-2-thiones were prepared by a reaction of aniline with carbon disulfide and different α-haloketone compounds. Oxidative desulfuration and salt metathesis yielded the desired NHC-precursors with hexafluorophosphate counterions. In addition, a new route for the synthesis of N-phenyl-1,3-benzo[d]thiazole tetrafluoroborate via N-arylation using hypervalent iodine species is presented. All complexes were prepared from the corresponding NHC precursor in a one-pot process using silver(i)oxide, transmetalation to platinum and reaction with the β-diketone acetylacetone under basic conditions. These complexes exhibit strong phosphorescence with quantum yields up to 72% in 2 wt% PMMA films with decay lifetimes of 8.8-12.3 μs. The influence of methyl- and phenyl-groups, and an ester-substituent at the 4- and/or 5-position of the 1,3-thiazole moiety, as well as the N-phenyl-1,3-benzo[d]thiazole-derived motif is discussed. The 4,5-unsubstituted-N-phenyl-1,3-thiazol-2-ylidene platinum(ii) acetylacetonato complex served as a reference in this study to evaluate the electronic effects originating from the backbone substitution. All complexes emit in a narrow range of the bluish-green spectrum of the visible light (510 ± 10 nm).

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations were performed to evaluate the influence of substituent effect of (1) R = 4-Me, (2) R = 4-OMe, and (3) R = 2,3-OC6H4 on the phenyl ring of (C∧C*)PtII(acac) (C∧C* = phenylimidazole, acac = acetylacetone), respectively, on absorption and phosphorescent spectra properties, as well as the radiative and nonradiative processes. We found that emissions of complexes 2 and 3 originate from the Kasha-like T1 state, whereas that of complex 1 originates from non-Kasha T2 state. Compared with the emission of complex 1, the emission peaks of 2 and 3 are red-shifted, which is attributed to p-π and π-π conjugation effects resulting from the electron-donating groups -OCH3 and -OC6H4 with ligand C∧C*, respectively. The radiative rate constants (κr) of 2 and 3 are larger than that of 1, namely, κr(1) < κr(2) < κr(3), indicating that κr can be efficiently increased by enlarging π-conjugation at the main ligand of (C∧C*)PtII(acac), which can cause the increase of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) matrix elements. At the same time, the activation energy barriers for the rate-limiting step can be largely raised accompanied by enlarging the ability of electron-donation of the substituent group at the main ligand of (C∧C*)PtII(acac), which can cause the decrease of the nonradiative rate constant (κnr), namely, κnr(1) > κnr(2) > κnr(3). According to ΦP = κr/(κr + κnr), the quantum yields should have the sequence ΦP(1) < ΦP(2) < ΦP(3), which is in accordance with the experiment. In addition, to guide experimental synthesis of highly efficient (C∧C*)PtII(acac), a new complex 4 through extending the π-conjugation in the C∧C* ligand of (C∧C*)PtII(acac) was theoretically designed, which has a larger quantum yield than 1-3.

Abstract
A new class of highly luminescent bipolar alkynylplatinum(II) complexes has been synthesized, characterized, and applied as phosphorescent dopants in the fabrication of solution-processable organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Through the incorporation of a delicate balance of electron-donating carbazole moieties and electron-accepting phenylbenzimidazole or oxadiazole moieties into the platinum(II) core, the platinum(II) complexes have been demonstrated to exhibit bipolar charge transport character with high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 0.75 in thin films. The introduction of meta-linkages into the complexes further helps weaken the donor-acceptor interactions, facilitating better carrier-transporting abilities. More importantly, high-performance solution-processable green-emitting OLEDs with maximum current efficiencies of up to 57.4 cd A-1 and external quantum efficiencies of up to 16.0% have been realized. This is among the best performances for solution-processable phosphorescent OLEDs reported based on platinum(II) complexes as well as bipolar metal complexes.

Abstract
New heteroleptic compounds of platinum(II)-containing cyclometalated N-heterocyclic carbenes, [PtCl(R-C^C*)(PPh3)] [R-CH^C*-κC* = 3-methyl-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene (R-C = Naph; 1A), 1-[4-(ethoxycarbonyl)phenyl]-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene (R = CO2Et; 1B), and [Pt(R-C^C*)(py)(PPh3)]PF6 (py = pyridine; R-C = Naph, 2A; R = CO2Et, 2B], have been prepared and fully characterized. All of them were obtained as the trans-(C*,PPh3) isomer in high yields. The selectivity of their synthesis has been explained in terms of the degree of transphobia (T) of pairs of ligands in trans positions. X-ray diffraction studies on both 2A and 2B revealed that only in 2A, containing a C^C* with a more extended π system, do the molecules assemble themselves into head-to-tail pairs through intermolecular π···π contacts. The photophysical properties of 2A and 2B and those of the related compounds [Pt(NC-C^C*)(PPh3)L]PF6 [NC-CH^C*-κC* = 1-(4-cyanophenyl)-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene; L = pyridine (py; 2C), 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide (CNXyl; 3C), and 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole (MMI; 4C)] have been examined to analyze the influence of the R substituent on R-C^C* (R-C = Naph; R = CO2Et, CN) and that of the ancillary ligands (L) on them. Experimental data and time-dependent density functional theory calculations showed the similarity of the electronic features associated with R-C^C* (R = CN, CO2Et) and their difference with respect to R-C^C* (R-C = Naph). All of the compounds are very efficient blue emitters in poly(methyl methacrylate) films under an argon atmosphere, with QY values ranging from 68% (2B) to 93% (2C). In the solid state, the color of the emission changes to yellowish-orange for compounds 2A (λmax = 600 nm) and 3C (λmax = 590 nm) because of the formation of aggregates through intermolecular π···π interactions. 2C and 3C were chosen to fabricate fully solution-processed electroluminescent devices with blue-light (2C), yellow-orange-light (3C), and white-light (mixtures of 2C and 3C) emission from neat films of the compounds as emitting layers.

Abstract
Phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are leading candidates for next-generation displays and solid-state lighting technologies. Much of the academic and commercial pursuits in phosphorescent OLEDs have been dominated by Ir(III) complexes. Over the past decade recent developments have enabled square planar Pt(II) and Pd(II) complexes to meet or exceed the performance of Ir complexes in many aspects. In particular, the development of N-heterocyclic carbene-based emitters and tetradentate cyclometalated Pt and Pd complexes have significantly improved the emission efficiency and reduced their radiative lifetimes making them competitive with the best reported Ir complexes. Furthermore, their unique and diverse molecular design possibilities have enabled exciting photophysical attributes including narrower emission spectra, excimer -based white emission, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence. These developments have enabled the fabrication of efficient and "pure" blue OLEDs, single-doped white devices with EQEs of over 25% and high CRI, and device operational lifetimes which show early promise that square planar metal complexes can be stable enough for commercialization. These accomplishments have brought Pt complexes to the forefront of academic research. The molecular design strategies, photophysical characteristics, and device performance resulting from the major advancements in emissive Pt and Pd square planar complexes are discussed.

Abstract
Cyclometalated thiazol-2-ylidene platinum(II) complexes based on the N-phenyl-4,5-dimethyl-1,3-thiazol-2-ylidene N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand and seven different β-diketonate ligands have been synthesised and investigated for their structural and photophysical properties. The complexes were synthesised in a one-pot procedure starting with the in situ formation of the corresponding silver(I) carbene and transmetalation to platinum, followed by the reaction with the respective β-diketonate under basic conditions. All the compounds were fully characterised by standard techniques, including 195 Pt NMR spectroscopy. Three solid-state structures revealed quite different aggregation behaviour depending on the β-diketonate architecture. The reported complexes showed strong phosphorescence at room temperature in amorphous poly(methyl methacrylate) films. The emission wavelengths (ca. 510 nm) were found to be independent of the β-diketonate ligand, but the electronically diverse β-diketonates strongly influence the observed quantum yields (QY) and decay lifetimes. The results of theoretical studies employing density functional theory (DFT) methods support the conclusion of a metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3 MLCT) as the main emission process, in accordance with the reported photophysical properties. Standard organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) prepared with unoptimised matrix materials using one of the complexes showed values of 12.3 % external quantum yield, 24.0 lm W-1 luminous efficacy and 37.8 cd A-1 current efficiency at 300 cd m-2 .

Photocatalysis and highly efficient PSF-OLEDs. Chem Sci 2016; 7:6083-6098. Abstract
Palladium(ii) complexes supported by tetradentate [N^C^C^N] and [O^N^C^N] ligand systems display sky blue to red phosphorescence with emission quantum yields and emission lifetimes up to 0.64 and 272 μs, respectively. Femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence (fs-TRF) measurements on these Pd(ii) complexes reveal a fast intersystem crossing from singlet to triplet manifolds with time constants of 0.6-21 ps. DFT/TDDFT calculations revealed that, as a result of the spiro-fluorene and bridging tertiary amine units of the ligands, the T1 excited state is more ligand-localized and has smaller structural distortion, leading to slower non-radiative decay as well as radiative decay of T1 → S0 transition and thereby highly emissive, long-lived triplet excited states. The Pd(ii) complexes have been found to be efficient catalysts for visible light-driven, reductive C-C bond formation from unactivated alkyl bromides with conversions and yields of up to 90% and 83%, respectively. These complexes have also been employed as photosensitizers for [2 + 2] cycloaddition of styrenes, with conversions and yields comparable to those of the reported Ir(iii) complexes. Both green and sky blue organic-light emitting devices (OLEDs) have been generated with these Pd(ii) complexes as guest emitters. Maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQE) of up to 16.5% have been achieved in the sky blue OLEDs. The long emission lifetimes render the Pd(ii) complexes good sensitizers for phosphor-sensitized fluorescent OLEDs (PSF-OLEDs). By utilizing these phosphorescent Pd(ii) complexes as sensitizers, highly efficient green and yellow PSF-OLEDs having high EQE (up to 14.3%), high colour purity and long operation lifetimes, with 90% of initial luminance (LT90) for more than 80 000 h, have been realized.
