Recent advances in transition metal complexes and light-management engineering in organic optoelectronic devices

Phosphorescent PdII-PdII Emitter-Based Red OLEDs with an EQEmax of 20.52

Three dinuclear Pd(II) complexes (1, 2, and 3) with intense red phosphorescence at room temperature are here synthesized using strong ligand field strength compounds. All three complexes are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and elemental analyses. Complexes 2 and 3 are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystalline data of 2 and 3 reveal complex double-layer structures, with Pd-Pd distances of 2.8690(9) Å and 2.8584(17) Å, respectively. Furthermore, complexes 1, 2, and 3 show phosphorescence at room temperature in their solid states at the wavelengths of 678, 601, and 672 nm, respectively. In addition, they show phosphorescence at 634, 635, and 582 nm, respectively, in the 2 wt.% (PMMA) films, and phosphorescence at 670, 675, and 589 nm, respectively, in the deoxygenated CH2Cl2 solutions. Among three complexes, complex 1 shows red emission at 634 nm with phosphorescent quantum yield Ф = 67% in the 2 wt.% PMMA film. Furthermore, complex 1-based organic light-emitting diode is fabricated using a vapor-phase deposition process, and their maximum external quantum efficiency reaches 20.52%, which is the highest percentage obtained by using the dinuclear Pd(II) complex triplet emitters with the CIE coordinates of (0.62, 0.38).

Enhancing the charge transport and luminescence properties of ethyl 4-[(E)-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)methyleneamino]benzoate through complexation: a DFT and TD-DFT study

Organic light emitting diode (OLED) and organic solar cell (OSC) properties of ethyl 4-[(E)-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)methyleneamino]benzoate (EMAB) and its Pt2+, Pd2+, Ni2+, Ir3+, Rh3+, and Zn2+ complexes have been theoretically studied herein. Geometry optimizations have been performed via the r2SCAN-3c composite method while single-point calculations have been carried out at the PBE0-D3(BJ)/def2-TZVP level of theory. Results have shown that complexation with selected metal ions improves hole and electron transfer rates in Pt[EMAB]2 and Rh[EMAB]2 +. Specifically, the hole transport rate of Pt[EMAB]2, (k ct(h) = 6.15 × 1014 s-1), is found to be 44 times greater than that of [EMAB], (k ct(h) = 1.42 × 1013 s-1), whereas electron transport rate of Pt[EMAB]2, (k ct(e) = 4.6 × 1013 s-1) is 4 times that of EMAB (k ct(e) = 1.1 × 1013 s-1). Charge mobility for holes and electrons are equal to 19.182 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 1.431 cm2 V-1 s-1 respectively for Pt[EMAB]2, and equal to 4.11 × 10-1 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 3.43 × 10-1 cm2 V-1 s-1 for EMAB respectively. These results show that, charge transport in EMAB can be tuned for better performance through complexation with transition metals such as Pt2+. OSC properties of the complexes were also studied by comparing their HOMO/LUMO energies with those of (6,6)-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). It turned out that the energy gap of EMAB reduced significantly upon complexation from 2.904 eV to 0.56 eV in [Rh(EMAB)2]+ and to a lesser extent in the other complexes. The energy values of the HOMOs remained higher than those of PCBM while those of the LUMOs were found to be greater than that of P3HT with the exception of [Rh(EMAB)2]+. These findings show that the aforementioned species are good electron donors to PCBM. The open circuit voltage, V OC, of the compounds ranged between 0.705 × 10-19 V and 6.617 × 10-19 V, values that are good enough for practical usage in OSC applications. The UV-visible absorption spectra revealed absorption maxima well below 900 nm in all compounds, vital in the efficient functioning of solar cells. In general, this study has shown that platinoid complexation of EMAB can successfully modify both its OLED and OSC properties, making them better precursors in the electronic industry.

Molecular Electronics: From Nanostructure Assembly to Device Integration

Integrated electronics and optoelectronics based on organic semiconductors have attracted considerable interest in displays, photovoltaics, and biosensing owing to their designable electronic properties, solution processability, and flexibility. Miniaturization and integration of devices are growing trends in molecular electronics and optoelectronics for practical applications, which requires large-scale and versatile assembly strategies for patterning organic micro/nano-structures with simultaneously long-range order, pure orientation, and high resolution. Although various integration methods have been developed in past decades, molecular electronics still needs a versatile platform to avoid defects and disorders due to weak intermolecular interactions in organic materials. In this perspective, a roadmap of organic integration technologies in recent three decades is provided to review the history of molecular electronics. First, we highlight the importance of long-range-ordered molecular packing for achieving exotic electronic and photophysical properties. Second, we classify the strategies for large-scale integration of molecular electronics through the control of nucleation and crystallographic orientation, and evaluate them based on factors of resolution, crystallinity, orientation, scalability, and versatility. Third, we discuss the multifunctional devices and integrated circuits based on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and photodetectors. Finally, we explore future research directions and outlines the need for further development of molecular electronics, including assembly of doped organic semiconductors and heterostructures, biological interfaces in molecular electronics and integrated organic logics based on complementary FETs.

Unraveling the Marked Differences of the Excited-State Properties of Arylgold(III) Complexes with C∧N∧C Tridentate Ligands

Three structurally similar gold(III) complexes with C∧N∧C tridentate ligands, [1; C∧N∧C = 2,6-diphenylpyridine], [2; C∧N∧C = 2,6-diphenylpyrazine], and [3; C∧N∧C = 2,6-diphenyltriazine], have been investigated theoretically to rationalize the marked difference in emission behaviors. The geometrical and electronic structures, spectra properties, radiative and nonradiative decay processes, as well as reverse intersystem crossing and reverse internal conversion (RIC) processes were thoroughly analyzed using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. The computed results indicate that there is a small energy difference Δ E T 1 - T 1 ' between the lowest-energy triplet state (T1) and the second lowest-energy triplet state (T1') of complexes 2 and 3, suggesting that the excitons in the T1 state can reach the emissive higher-energy T1' through the RIC process. In addition, the non-emissive T1 states of gold(III) complexes in solution can be ascribed to the easily accessible metal-centered (3MC) state or possibly tunneling into high-energy vibrationally excited singlet states for nonradiative decay. The low efficiency of 3 is attributed to the deactivation pathway via the 3MC state. The present study elucidates the relationship between structure and property of gold(III) complexes featuring C∧N∧C ligands and providing a comprehensive understanding of the significant differences in their luminescence behaviors.

Highly Efficient Blue Organic Light Emitting Diodes Based on Cyclohexane-Fused Quinoxaline Acceptor

Exploring blue organic light emitting diodes (OLED) is an important but challenging issue. Herein, to achieve blue-shifted emission, cyclohexane is fused to quinoxaline to weaken the electron-withdrawing ability and conjugation degree of the acceptor. As a result, blue to cyan fluorescent emitters of Me-DPA-TTPZ, tBu-DPA-TTPZ, and TPA-TTPZ were designed and synthesized with donors of diphenylamine and triphenylamine, which exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields and good thermal stability. In OLEDs with emitters of TPA-TTPZ, the sensitized and nonsensitized devices demonstrate deep-blue (449 nm) and blue (468 nm) emission with maximum external quantum efficiency and CIE coordinates of 6.1%, (0.15, 0.10) and 5.1%, (0.17, 0.22), respectively, validating their potential as blue emitters in OLEDs.

cis/trans-[Pt(C∧N)(C≡CR)(CNBut)] Isomers: Synthesis, Photophysical, DFT Studies, and Chemosensory Behavior

cis/trans Isomerism can be a crucial factor for photophysical properties. Here, we report the synthesis and optical properties of a series of trans- and cis-alkynyl/isocyanide cycloplatinated compounds [Pt(C^∧N)(C≡CR)(CNBu^t)] [R = C₆H₄-4-OMe 1, 3-C₄H₃S 2; C^∧N = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine (dfppy) (a), 4-(2-pyridyl)benzaldehyde (ppy-CHO) (b)]. The trans-forms do not isomerize thermally in MeCN solution to the cis forms, but upon photochemical irradiation in this medium at 298 K, a variable isomerization to the cis forms was observed. This behavior is in good agreement with the theoretically calculated energy values. The trans/cis configuration, the identity of the cyclometalated, and the alkynyl ligand influence on the absorption and emission properties of the complexes in solution, polystyrene (PS) films, and solid state are reported. All complexes are efficient triplet emitters in all media (except for trans-1a and trans-2a in CH₂Cl₂ solution at 298 K), with emission wavelengths depending mainly on the cyclometalated ligand in the region 473-490 nm (dfppy), 510-550 (ppy-CHO), and quantum yields (ϕ) ranging from 18.5 to 40.7% in PS films. The combined photophysical data and time-dependent density functional theory calculations (TD-DFT) at the excited-state T₁ geometry reveal triplet excited states of ³L'LCT (C≡CR → C^∧N)/³IL (C^∧N) character with minor ³MLCT contribution. The dfppy (a) complexes show a greater tendency to aggregate in rigid media than the ppy-CHO (b) and the cis with respect to the trans, showing red-shifted structureless bands of ³MMLCT and/or excimer-like nature. Interestingly, trans-1a,2a and cis-1a,2a undergo significant changes in the ultraviolet (UV) and emission spectra with Hg²⁺ ions enabling their use for sensing of Hg²⁺ ions in solution. This is clearly shown by the hypsochromic shift and substantial decrease of the low-energy absorption band and an increase of the intensity of the emission in the MeCN solution upon the addition of a solution of Hg(ClO₄)₂ (1:5 molar ratio). Job's plot analysis estimated a 1:1 stoichiometry in the complexation mode of Hg²⁺ by trans-2a. The binding constant (log K) calculated for this system from absorption titration data resulted to be 2.56, and the limit of the detection (LOD) was 6.54 × 10^-7 M.

Trans-Reflective Structural Color Filters Assisting Multifunctional-Integrated Semitransparent Photovoltaic Window

Multifunction-integrated semitransparent organic photovoltaic cells (STOPVs), with high power generation, colorful transmittance/reflectance, excellent ultraviolet (UV) protection, and thermal insulation, are fully in line with the concept of architectural aesthetics and photoprotection characteristics for building-integrated photovoltaic-window. For the indelible rainbow color photovoltaic window, one crucial issue is to realize the integration of these photons- and photoelectric-related multifunction. Herein, dynamic transmissive and reflective structural color controllable filters, with asymmetrical metal-insulator-metal (MIM) configurations (20 nm-Ag-HATCN-30 nm-Ag) through machine learning, are deliberately designed for colorful STOPV devices. This endows the resultant integrated devices with ≈5% enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) than the bare-STOPVs, gifted UV (300-400 nm) blocking rates as high as 93.5, 94.1, 90.2, and 94.5%, as well as a superior infrared radiation (IR) (700-1400 nm) rejection approaching 100% for transparent purple-, blue-, green- and red-STOPV cells, respectively. Most importantly, benefiting from the photonic recycling effect beyond microcavity resonance wavelength, a reported quantum utilization efficiency (QUE) as high as 80%, is first presented for the transparent-green-STOPVs with an ultra-narrow bandgap of 1.2 eV. These asymmetrical Febry-Pérot transmissive and reflective structural color filters can also be extended to silicon- and perovskite-based optoelectric devices and make it possible to integrate additional target optical functions for multi-purpose optoelectric devices.

Perylene-Based Coordination Polymers: Synthesis, Fluorescent J-Aggregates, and Electrochemical Properties

The incorporation of electroactive organic building blocks into coordination polymers (CPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offers a promising approach for adding electronic functionalities such as redox activity, electrical conductivity, and luminescence to these materials. The incorporation of perylene moieties into CPs is, in particular, of great interest due to its potential to introduce both luminescence and redox properties. Herein, we present an innovative synthesis method for producing a family of highly crystalline and stable coordination polymers based on perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylate (PTC) and various transition metals (TMs = Co, Ni, and Zn) with an isostructural framework. The crystal structure of the PTC-TM CPs, obtained through powder X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement, provides valuable insights into the composition and organization of the building blocks within the CP. The perylene moieties are arranged in a herringbone pattern, with short distances between adjacent ligands, which contributes to the dense and highly organized framework of the material. The photophysical properties of PTC-Zn were thoroughly studied, revealing the presence of J-aggregation-based and monomer-like emission bands. These bands were experimentally identified, and their behavior was further understood through the use of quantum-chemical calculations. Solid-state cyclic voltammetry experiments on PTC-TMs showed that the perylene redox properties are maintained within the CP framework. This study presents a simple and effective approach for synthesizing highly stable and crystalline perylene-based CPs with tunable optical and electrochemical properties in the solid state.

Polymorphism and Mechanochromism in 2-Phenylbenzothiazole Cyclometalated PtII Complexes with Chelating N∧O Ligands

New cyclometalated Pt^II complexes with 2-phenylbenzothiazole (pbt) and two different picolinate ligands [Pt(pbt)(R-pic-κN,O)] (R = H (1), OH (2)) were prepared. In contrast to 1, the OH substituent group on 2 allows modulation of the packing in the solid state through donor-acceptor H-bonding interactions with the CH₂Cl₂ solvent. Thus, three pseudopolymorphs of 2 with different aggregation degrees were isolated, including yellow 2-Y, orange-red 2-R (2·0.5CH₂Cl₂) and black 2-B (2·0.75CH₂Cl₂) with emissions at 540, 656, and 740 nm, respectively, in the solid state at 298 K. 2-R and 2-B can be transformed to the pristine solid 2. Studies of their crystal structures show that 1 and 2-Y stack in columns with only π···π stacking interactions, whereas 2-R displays strong aggregated 1D infinite chains based on Pt···Pt and π···π stacking interactions, consistent with the colors and the photophysical properties, measured in several media. Interestingly, 1 and 2 exhibit reversible mechanochromic behavior with high contrast in the color and color emission upon mechanical grinding due to a phase transition between a crystalline and an amorphous state, as confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) studies. Theoretical calculations indicate that Pt···Pt contacts are more relevant in the trimers and tetramers than in the dimers, particularly in their T₁ states, associated with a change from a ³IL/³MLCT transition in the monomer to ³MM(L+L')CT in the oligomers. Noncovalent interaction (NCI) theoretical studies indicate that the π···π stacking among chelates also exerts a strong influence in the metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer transition character.

Near-UV light emitting diode with on-chip photocatalysts for purification applications

A new design for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with on-chip photocatalysts is presented for purification applications. An array of disk-shaped TiO₂, with a diameter of several hundred nanometers, combined with SiO₂ pedestals was fabricated directly on the surface of an InGaN-based near-ultraviolet (UV) LED using a dry etching process. The high refractive-index contrast at the boundary and the circular shape can effectively confine the near-UV light generated from the LED through multiple internal reflections inside the TiO₂ nanodisks. Such a feature results in the enhancement of light absorption by the photocatalytic TiO₂. The degradation of the organic dye malachite green was monitored as a model photocatalytic reaction. The proposed structure of LEDs with TiO₂/SiO₂ nanodisk/pedestal array exhibited a photocatalytic activity that was three times higher than the activity of LEDs with a TiO₂ planar layer. The integration of photocatalytic materials with near-UV LEDs in a single system is promising for various purification applications, such as sterilization and disinfection.

Exciton Up-Conversion by Well-Distributed Carbon Quantum Dots in Luminescent Materials for an Efficient Organic Light-Emitting Diode

In this work, we proposed an efficient and straightforward up-conversion process to enhance the external quantum efficiency in a red-emission organic light-emitting diode (OLED). The carbon quantum dots in the luminescent materials initiated the up-conversion by doping the (6,6)-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) in an amount of 0.001 wt. %, and the external quantum efficiency (EQE) increased from approximately 80% to 9.27% without spectrum change. The time-resolved photoluminescence was applied to understand the mechanism of EQE enhancement in the PCBM-doped OLED. Two decay-time constants fit the TRPL. After PCBM doping, the extended PL intensity indicated increased time constants. The time constants increased from 1.06 and 4.02 ns of the reference sample to 3.48 and 11.29 ns of the PCBM-doped material, respectively. The nonradiative energy transfer (NRET) mechanism was proposed responsible for the decay-time enhancement. The excitons in the PCBM, either by excitation or injection, will transfer to the phosphorescent material nonradiatively. As the PCBM has lower energy levels than the luminous material for electrons, the backward exciton transfer is a kind of up-conversion. With the increased amounts of excitons in the luminescent material, the luminescent external quantum efficiency and the decay-time increased. This up-conversion method is not limited to the red-emission OLED; it could also be applied to blue or green emission.

Structural, Electronic, and Charge Transport Properties of New Materials based on 2-(5-Mercapto-1,3,4-Oxadiazol-2-yl) Phenol for Organic Solar Cells and Light Emitting Diodes by DFT and TD-DFT

This work reports on the density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent extension (TD-DFT) study of the structural, electronic, and charge transport properties of 2-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl) phenol (MODP) and some of its transition M2+ complexes (M = Fe, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pd, Pt). Reorganization energy, integral charge transfer, mobility, open circuit voltage, and electronic properties of these compounds have been calculated by employing the global hybrid functional PBE0 in conjunction with the Karlsruhe basis set def2-TZVP. Results show that MODP and its transition metal complexes are good electron donors for organic solar cells (OSC) owing to their relatively higher HOMO and LUMO energies compared to the prototypical (6, 6)-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). Energy gaps ranging between 2.502 and 4.455 eV, energy driving forces (∆EL-L) ranging between 2.08 and 2.44 eV, and large open circuit voltages ( $V_{\text{OC}}$ ) ranging from 1.12 to 2.05 eV were obtained. The results also revealed that MODP and its Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes could serve as ambipolar charge transport materials owing to their very small reorganization energies, integral charge transfers, high rate charge transfers, and mobilities. All studied molecules showed OSC donor and hole/electron transport characteristics required by organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Based on these results, new ways for designing charge transport materials for OLEDs as well as donor materials in OSCs are proposed.

Bis-Heteroleptic Cationic Iridium(III) Complexes Featuring Cyclometalating 2-Phenylbenzimidazole Ligands: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

In this report, we investigate a new family of cationic iridium(III) complexes featuring the cyclometalating ligand 2-phenylbenzimidazole and ancillary ligand 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine. Our benchmark complex IrL¹₂ (L¹ = 2-phenylbenzimidazole) displays emission properties similar to those of the archetypical complex 2,2'-dipyridylbis(2',4'-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) in deaerated CH₃CN (Φ = 0.20, λ_em = 584 nm and Φ = 0.14, λ_em = 585 nm, respectively) but exhibits a higher photoluminescence quantum yield in deaerated CH₂Cl₂ (Φ = 0.32, λ_em = 566 nm and Φ = 0.20, λ_em = 595 nm, respectively) and especially a lower nonradiative constant (k_nr = 6.6 × 10⁵ s^-1 vs k_nr = 1.4 × 10⁶ s^-1, respectively). As a primary investigation, we explored the influence of the introduction of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups on the benzimidazole moiety and the synergetic effect of the substitution of the cyclometalating phenyl moiety at the para position with the same substituents. The emission energy displays very good correlation with the Hammett constants of the introduced substituents as well as with ΔE_redox values, which allow us to ascribe the phosphorescence of these series to emanate mainly from a mixed metal/ligand to ligand charge transfer triplet excited state (³M/LLCT*). Two complexes (IrL⁵₂ and IrL⁸₂) display a switch of the lowest triplet excited state from ³M/LLCT* to ligand centered (³LC*), from the less polar CH₂Cl₂ to the more polar CH₃CN. The observed results are supported by (TD)-DFT computations considering the vibrational contributions to the electronic transitions. Chromaticity diagrams based on the maximum emission wavelength of the recorded and simulated phosphorescence spectra demonstrate the strong promise of our complexes as emitting materials, together with the very good agreement between experimental and theoretical results.

Visible-emitting Cu(i) complexes with N-functionalized benzotriazole-based ligands

Bidentate benzotriazole-based N-ligands are suited for the preparation of luminescent heteroleptic copper(i) complexes with noticeable emissions related to 3MLCT transitions.

Luminescent 2-phenylbenzothiazole cyclometalated PtII and IrIII complexes with chelating P^O ligands

Two series of cyclometalated Pt^II and Ir^III complexes with general formulas [Pt(pbt){PPh₂(R)-κP,O}] (2a-2c) and [Ir(pbt)₂{PPh₂(R)-κP,O}] (3a-3c), where Hpbt is 2-phenylbenzothiazol and PPh₂(R) is a diphenylphosphino donor functionalized deprotonated acid (R = o-C₆H₄CO₂a, o-C₆H₄SO₃b, CH₂CH₂CO₂c) are presented. The structures of 1, 2a-2c, 3a and 3b were confirmed by single X-ray diffraction analyses, and the intermolecular interactions in 2a were studied using Hirshfeld surface analysis and non-covalent interaction (NCI) methods on its X-ray structure. Their photophysical properties were investigated by absorption and emission analyses [CH₂Cl₂, solid (298, 77 K) and doped polystyrene (PS) films], supported by TD-DFT calculations on 1, 2a-2c and 3a. The Pt^II complexes exhibit bright phosphorescence in the region 525-542 nm, ascribed to a mixed ³IL/³MLCT excited state with a predominant ³IL contribution. The Ir^III derivatives (3a-3c) show orange photoluminescence (535-584 nm, 298 K), blue shifted at 77 K (527-560 nm), originated from the admixture of ³IL/³MLCT/³LLCT excited states. Interestingly, the photoluminescence quantum yields of the Pt complexes 2a-2c (ϕ = 46.5-66.5%) in PS films are remarkably higher than those of the corresponding iridium complexes (ϕ = 17.3-32%) and the precursor 1 (ϕ = 17%). The calculated ³MC-³IL/³MLCT energy gap for 2a and 3a accounts for the higher quantum yield of the Pt in relation to the Ir complex.

Thermally Activated Lasing in Organic Microcrystals toward Laser Displays

Thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials are promising to overcome triplet-induced optical loss in the pursuit of electrically pumped organic lasers. However, population inversion is difficult to establish in these materials due to the severe suppression of triplet-to-singlet upconversion in their condensed states. In this work, we report thermally activated lasing in solution-processed coassembled microcrystals, where TADF dyes were uniformly dispersed into crystalline matrices to ensure an efficient reverse intersystem crossing (RISC). The dark-state triplet excitons harvested by the RISC were effectively converted into radiative singlet excitons, which subsequently participated in the population inversion to boost lasing with an unusual temperature dependence. The lasing wavelength was tuned over the full visible spectrum by doping various TADF laser dyes, owing to the excellent compatibility. Trichromatic TADF microlasers were precisely patterned into periodic pixelated arrays by a template-confined solution-growth method. With as-prepared TADF microlaser arrays as display panels, vivid laser displays were achieved under programmable excitation. These results offer valuable enlightenment to minimize triplet state-related energy losses toward high-performance lasers.

Study of a phosphorescent cationic iridium(III) complex displaying a blue-shift in crystals

We report the synthesis and the characterization of a new cationic iridium(III) complex featuring two 1-(p-methoxyphenyl)-5-methoxybenzimidazole cyclometallating ligands and a dimethylbipyridine ancillary ligand. The complex has been fully characterized by 1D and 2D NMR (¹H, ¹³C, ¹⁹F and ³¹P), elemental analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). The photoluminescence studies performed in a solution, on amorphous powder and on crystals revealed an unexpected behavior. Indeed, the emission spectra observed in both solution (CH₂Cl₂) and amorphous powder samples are centered at around 580 nm, whereas in crystals the emission displays a large hypsochromic shift of ∼800 cm^-1 (λ_em = 558 nm). X-ray diffraction experiments, photophysical studies and DFT calculations allow for rationalizing the hypsochromic shift.

Light Management With Grating Structures in Optoelectronic Devices

Ordered and patterned micro/nanostructure arrays have emerged as powerful platforms for optoelectronic devices due to their unique ordered-dependent optical properties. Among various structures, grating structure is widely applied because of its simple fabrication process, easy adjusting of size and morph, and efficient light trapping. Herein, we summarized recent developments of light management with grating structures in optoelectronic devices. Typical mechanisms about the grating structures in optoelectronic devices have been reviewed. Moreover, the applications of grating structures in various optoelectronic devices have been presented. Meanwhile, the remaining bottlenecks and perspectives for future development have been discussed.

A methyl-shield strategy enables efficient blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence hosts for high-performance fluorescent OLEDs

Here, we report a novel methyl-shield strategy to design ideal TADF hosts for the improvement of the performance of TSF-OLEDs. The methyl group on the xanthone acceptor acts like a shield to protect the luminance center from close intermolecular hydrogen bonding with adjacent molecules, thus alleviating exciton quenching, and meanwhile the small size of the methyl group almost does not disturb the π-π stacking between acceptors, thus maintaining fast electron-transport pathways. dMeACRXTO having two methyl shields is exploited as the host to achieve a record-high EQE of 32.3%, which represents the first report of an EQE above 30% in TSF-OLEDs.

Luminescent Cationic Group 4 Metallocene Complexes Stabilized by Pendant N-Donor Groups

Cationic group 4 metallocene complexes with pendant imine and pyridine donor groups were prepared as stable crystalline [B(C₆F₅)₄]^- salts either by protonation of the intramolecularly bound ketimide moiety in neutral complexes [(η⁵-C₅Me₅){η⁵-C₅H₄CMe₂CMe₂C(R)═N-κN}MCl] (M = Ti, Zr, Hf; R = t-Bu, Ph) by PhNMe₂H⁺[B(C₆F₅)₄]^- to give [(η⁵-C₅Me₅){η⁵-C₅H₄CMe₂CMe₂C(R)═NH-κN}MCl]⁺[B(C₆F₅)₄]^- or by chloride ligand abstraction from the complexes [(η⁵-C₅Me₅)(η⁵-C₅H₄CMe₂CH₂C₅H₄N)MCl₂] (M = Ti, Zr) by Li[B(C₆F₅)₄]·2.5Et₂O to give [(η⁵-C₅Me₅)(η⁵-C₅H₄CMe₂CH₂C₅H₄N-κN)MCl]⁺[B(C₆F₅)₄]^-. Solid state structures of the new compounds were established by X-ray diffraction analysis, and their electrochemical behavior was studied by cyclic voltammetry. The cationic complexes of Zr and Hf, compared to the corresponding neutral species, exhibited significantly enhanced luminescence predominantly from triplet ligand-to-metal (³LMCT) excited states with lifetimes up to 62 μs and quantum yields up to 58% in the solid state. DFT calculations were performed to explain the structural features and optical and electrochemical properties of the complexes.

Cyano-Isocyanide Iridium(III) Complexes with Pure Blue Phosphorescence

In this paper, we report a series of six neutral, blue-phosphorescent cyclometalated iridium complexes of the type Ir(C^Y)₂(CNAr)(CN). The cyclometalating ligands in these compounds (C^Y) are either aryl-substituted 1,2,4-triazole or NHC ligands, known to produce complexes with blue phosphorescence. These cyclometalating ligands are paired with π-acidic, strongly σ-donating cyano and aryl isocyanide (CNAr) ancillary ligands, the hypothesis being that these ancillary ligands would destabilize the higher-lying ligand-field (d-d) excited states, allowing efficient blue photoluminescence. The compounds are prepared by substituting the cyanide ancillary ligand onto a chloride precursor and are characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, and, for five of the compounds, by X-ray crystallography. Cyclic voltammetry establishes that these compounds have large HOMO-LUMO gaps. The mixed cyano-isocyanide compounds are weakly luminescent in solution, but they phosphoresce with moderate to good efficiency when doped into poly(methyl methacrylate) films, with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates that indicate deep blue emission for five of the six compounds. The photophysical studies show that the photoluminescence quantum yields are greatly enhanced in the cyano complexes relative to the chloride precursors, affirming the benefit of strong-field ancillary ligands in the design of blue-phosphorescent complexes. Density functional theory calculations confirm that this enhancement arises from a significant destabilization of the higher-energy ligand-field states in the cyanide complexes relative to the chloride precursors.

Understanding and Controlling Intersystem Crossing in Molecules

This review article focuses on the understanding of intersystem crossing (ISC) in molecules. It addresses readers who are interested in the phenomenon of intercombination transitions between states of different electron spin multiplicities but are not familiar with relativistic quantum chemistry. Among the spin-dependent interaction terms that enable a crossover between states of different electron spin multiplicities, spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is by far the most important. If SOC is small or vanishes by symmetry, ISC can proceed by electronic spin-spin coupling (SSC) or hyperfine interaction (HFI). Although this review discusses SSC- and HFI-based ISC, the emphasis is on SOC-based ISC. In addition to laying the theoretical foundations for the understanding of ISC, the review elaborates on the qualitative rules for estimating transition probabilities. Research on the mechanisms of ISC has experienced a major revival in recent years owing to its importance in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Exemplified by challenging case studies, chemical substitution and solvent environment effects are discussed with the aim of helping the reader to understand and thereby get a handle on the factors that steer the efficiency of ISC.

Luminescent cyclometalated platinum(ii) complexes with acyclic diaminocarbene ligands: structural, photophysical and biological properties

Four new cyclometalated Pt(ii) complexes bearing acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC) ligands, [Pt(C^N)Cl{C(NHXyl)(NHR)}] [C^N = 2,6-difluorophenylpyridine (dfppy), phenylquinoline (pq); R = Pr 3a, 4a, CH₂Ph 3b, 4b], were prepared by the nucleophilic attack on the isocyanide [Pt(C^N)Cl(CNXyl)] (C^N = dfppy 1, pq 2) by the corresponding amine RNH₂ (R = Pr, CH₂Ph). Complexes 3 show in their ¹H NMR spectra in CDCl₃ a notable concentration dependence, with a clear variation of the δ_H (NHXyl) signal, suggesting an assembling process implying donor-acceptor NH_XylCl bonding, also supported by 1D-PGSE (Pulse Field Gradient Spin Echo) and 2D-DOSY (Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy) NMR experiments in solution and X-ray diffraction studies. The intermolecular interactions in compounds 3a and 3b were studied by using Hirshfeld surface analysis and Non-Covalent Interaction (NCI) methods on their X-ray structures. Their photophysical properties were investigated by absorption and emission spectroscopies and also by TD-DFT calculations performed on 3a and 4b. These complexes show green (3) or orange (4) phosphorescence, attributed to a mixed ³IL/³MLCT excited state. The carbene ligand does not affect the emission maxima but it produces an increase of the quantum yields in relation to the isocyanide in the precursors. In fluid solutions, the emission is not concentration-dependent, but the complexes may show aggregation induced emission as detailed for complexes 3a and 4a. In addition, cytotoxicity studies in the human cell lines A549 (lung carcinoma) and HeLa (cervix carcinoma) showed good activity for these complexes and 3a, 3b and 4a exhibit a strong effect on DNA electrophoretic mobility. To the best of our knowledge, compounds 3 and 4 represent the first examples of cycloplatinated complexes bearing acyclic diamino carbenes with antiproliferative properties.

A Brief History of OLEDs-Emitter Development and Industry Milestones

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have come a long way ever since their first introduction in 1987 at Eastman Kodak. Today, OLEDs are especially valued in the display and lighting industry for their promising features. As one of the research fields that equally inspires and drives development in academia and industry, OLED device technology has continuously evolved over more than 30 years. OLED devices have come forward based on three generations of emitter materials relying on fluorescence (first generation), phosphorescence (second generation), and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (third generation). Furthermore, research in academia and industry toward the fourth generation of OLEDs is in progress. Excerpts from the history of green, orange-red, and blue OLED emitter development on the side of academia and milestones achieved by key players in the industry are included in this report.

Comparative photophysical study of Pt(II) complex-nanoclay hybrid materials as dry powders and hydrogels

The excited state properties of Pt(II) complexes are strongly influenced by their microenvironment and by intermolecular interactions. In this work, we investigated the photoluminescence of six Pt(II) complexes adsorbed onto a layered nanoclay, namely Laponite® (LAP). The excellent water dispersibility and gel-forming nature of the LAP was exploited to achieve a class of versatile materials. In particular, we report on the comparative photophysics of the dry powders and the hydrogels. Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy were used to assess the role of structural features at molecular level on the interaction between the nanodiscs, which in turn affects the intermolecular coupling of the coordination compounds in the excited state.

Rational Design of π-Conjugated Tricoordinated Organoboron Derivatives With Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Properties for Application in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

A series of donor–acceptor (D–A) tricoordinated organoboron derivatives (1–10) have been systematically investigated for thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF)-based organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials. The calculated results show that the designed molecules exhibit small singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE_ST) values. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis indicated that the designed molecules display an efficient separation between donor and acceptor fragments because of a small overlap between donor and acceptor fragments on HOMOs and LUMOs. Furthermore, the delayed fluorescence emission color can be tuned effectively by introduction of different polycyclic aromatic fragments in parent molecule 1. The calculated results show that molecules 2, 3, and 4 possess more significant Stokes shifts and red emission with small ΔE_ST values. Nevertheless, other molecules exhibit green (1, 7, and 8), light green (6 and 10), and blue (5 and 9) emissions. Meanwhile, they are potential ambipolar charge transport materials except that 4 and 10 can serve as electron and hole transport materials only, respectively. Therefore, we proposed a rational way for the design of efficient TADF materials as well as charge transport materials for OLEDs simultaneously.

Hetero-Tetranuclear Cu2+ /Ca2+ /Ca2+ /Cu2+ Architectures Based On Malten Ligand: Scaffold for Anion Binding

The hetero-tetranuclear Cu²⁺ /Ca²⁺ /Ca²⁺ /Cu²⁺ complex obtained with the N,N'-bis((3-hydroxy-4-pyron-2-yl)methyl)-N,N'-dimethylethylendiamine (Malten) ligand has been studied in solid and solution states as scaffold to bind anions. Three crystal structures showing the same metal ions sequence have been examined; they display a tetracharged complex cation neutralized by four monocharged anions. The anions play two different roles: as coordinated (two ClO₄ ^- , Cl^- or NO₃ ^- ) or ancillary (two ClO₄ ^- ) guests. The tetranuclear scaffold hosts two anions also in aqueous and ethanol solutions. Spectrophotometric studies in ethanol allowed to determine the addition constant values for Cl^- and Br^- (Log K_1-2 =4.43(4), 4.39(3) for Cl^- , 3.80(3), 3.54(2) for Br^- ) while the others, although bound, showed lower affinity for the scaffold. Both the crystals and the solutions change their color depending on the added anion, namely pink, dark green or blue in the presence of ClO₄ ^- , Cl^- or NO₃ ^- , respectively, thus the presence of the different anions is visible to the naked eye. The hetero-tetranuclear Cu²⁺ /Ca²⁺ /Ca²⁺ /Cu²⁺ complex is a versatile architecture to be used as scaffold for anion binding.

Synthesis and crystal structure of (1,10-phenanthroline-κ2 N,N')[2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)phenyl-κ2 N 2,C 1]iridium(III) hexa-fluorido-phosphate with an unknown number of solvent mol-ecules

The cationic complex in the title compound, [Ir(C9H7N2)2(C12H8N2)]PF6, comprises two phenyl-pyrazole (ppz) cyclo-metallating ligands and one 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ancillary ligand. The asymmetric unit consists of one [Ir(ppz)2(phen)]+ cation and one [PF6]- counter-ion. The central IrIII ion is six-coordinated by two N atoms and two C atoms from the two ppz ligands as well as by two N atoms from the phen ligand within a distorted octa-hedral C2N4 coordination set. In the crystal structure, the [Ir(ppz)2(phen)]+ cations and PF6 - counter-ions are connected with each other through weak inter-molecular C-H⋯F hydrogen bonds. Additional C-H⋯π inter-actions between the rings of neighbouring cations consolidate the three-dimensional network. Electron density associated with additional disordered solvent mol-ecules inside cavities of the structure was removed with the SQUEEZE procedure in PLATON [Spek (2015 ▸). Acta Cryst. C71, 9-18]. The given chemical formula and other crystal data do not take into account the unknown solvent mol-ecule(s). The title compound has a different space-group symmetry (C2/c) from its solvatomorph (P21/c) comprising 1.5CH2Cl2 solvent mol-ecules per ion pair.

Electrochromic behaviour of Ir(iii) bis-cyclometalated 1,2-dioxolene tetra-halo complexes: fully reversible catecholate/semiquinone redox switches

Neutral cyclometalated Ir(iii) complexes of general formula [Ir(ppy)2(O^O)squi], where ppy = 2-phenylpyridine and (O^O)squi = TBC (tetrabromocatechol) or TCC (tetrachlorocatechol) in their semiquinone (squi) monoanionic redox state, were synthesized by chemically oxidizing the anionic parent complexes NBu4[Ir(ppy)2(O^O)cat], in which (O^O)cat represents the corresponding ancillary dioxolene ligand in its dianionic catecholate (cat) redox state. This chemical oxidation leads to the modification of both the photophysical and the magnetic properties of the complexes. While the NBu4[Ir(ppy)2(O^O)cat] complexes are diamagnetic (D) and yellow-orange solids, the corresponding oxidized complexes [Ir(ppy)2(O^O)squi] display paramagnetic (P) properties and are characterized by a dark-green color. The conversion between the two forms (squi vs. cat) is electrochemically and chemically fully reversible. Indeed, the anionic NBu4[Ir(ppy)2(O^O)cat] complexes are quantitatively restored by chemical reduction of the neutral [Ir(ppy)2(O^O)squi] parents. These complexes therefore represent interesting redox based switches between multi-parameter states since they allow switching from a neutral paramagnetic to an anionic diamagnetic form together with a significant change in chromicity. Taking advantage of the significant color difference between the oxidized and the reduced form, an electrochromic cell was prepared with [Ir(ppy)2(TBC)squi] and its spectroelectrochemical properties are reported.

Zinc(ii), copper(ii) and cadmium(ii) complexes as fluorescent chemosensors for cations

The fluorescence chemosensing behavior of Zn(ii), Cu(ii), and Cd(ii) based complexes toward cations has been described. Cation detection via conventional mechanisms, metal-metal exchange and chemodosimetric approaches along with the importance of metal ions and the scope, significance, and challenges with regard to the detection of cations by metal complex based probes will be discussed in detail. The fundamentals of photophysical behavior and mechanisms involved in the fluorescence detection of analytes will also be described. This article provides a detailed overview of Zn(ii), Cu(ii), and Cd(ii) based complexes as fluorescent probes for cations, together with essential discussions pertaining to detection mechanisms.

Roles of Ancillary Chelates and Overall Charges of Bis-tridentate Ir(III) Phosphors for OLED Applications

A series of charge-neutral bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes (1, 3, and 4) were prepared via employing three distinctive tridentate prochelates, that is, (pzp^tBph^FO)H₂, [(phpyim)H₂·(PF₆)], and [(pimb)H₃·(PF₆)₂], which possess one dianionic pzp^tBph^FO, together with a second monoanionic tridentate chelate, namely, (pzp^tBph^FO)H, phpyim, and pimb, respectively. Moreover, a homoleptic, charge-neutral complex 2 was obtained by methylation of chelating (pzp^tBph^FO)H of 1 in basic media, while closely related cationic complexes 5-7 were obtained by further methylation of the remaining pyrazolate unit of previously mentioned neutral complexes 2-4, followed by anion metatheses. All of these Ir(III) metal complexes showed a broadened emission profile with an onset at ∼450 nm, a result of an enlarged ligand-centered ππ* transition gap, but with distinct efficiencies ranging from 0.8% to nearly unity. Comprehensive spectroscopic and computational approaches were executed, providing a correlation for the emission efficiencies versus energy gaps and between the metal-to-ligand charge transfer/ππ* emitting excited state and upper-lying metal-centered dd quenching state. Furthermore, Ir(III) complexes 3 and 4 were selected as dopant emitters in the fabrication of sky-blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes, affording maximum external quantum efficiencies of 16.7 and 14.6% with CIE_x,y coordinates of (0.214, 0.454) and (0.191, 0.404) at a current density of 10² cd/m², respectively. Hence, this research highlights an inherent character of bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes in achieving high phosphorescence quantum yield at the molecular level.

Optical absorption properties of metal-organic frameworks: solid state versus molecular perspective

The vast chemical space of metal and ligand combinations in Transition Metal Complexes (TMCs) gives rise to a rich variety of electronic excited states with local and non-local character such as intra-ligand (IL), metal-centered (MC), metal-to-ligand (MLCT) or ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) states. Those features are equally found in metal organic frameworks (MOFs), defined as modular materials built from metal-nodes connected through organic-ligands. Because of the electronic and structural complexity of MOFs, the computational description of their excited states is a formidable challenge for which two different approaches have been usually followed: the solid state and the molecular perspective. The first consists in analysing the frontier electronic bands and crystal orbitals of the electronic ground state (GS) in periodic boundary conditions, while the latter points to an accurate computation of the excited states in representative clusters at the molecular level. Herein, we apply both approaches to evaluate the optical absorption properties of three experimentally reported Ti(iv) mononuclear MOFs with in silico metal substitutions with Zn(ii), Cd(ii), Fe(ii), Ru(ii) and Zr(iv) ions, thus covering d10, d6 and d0 electronic configurations of 1st and 2nd row TMCs in MOFs. Our analysis captures the main electronic features attributed to these systems while we discuss the main advantages and drawbacks of both approximations.

Enhancing Phosphorescence through Rigidifying the Conformation to Achieve High-Efficiency OLEDs by Modified PEDOT

Bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)phenylphosphine (dpmp)-supported Pt₂Au heterotrinuclear complexes [Pt₂Au(dpmp)₂(C≡CPh)₄](ClO₄) (1), [Pt₂Au(dpmp)₂(DEBf)(C≡CPh)₂](ClO₄) (2), and [Pt₂Au(dpmp)₂(DECz)(C≡CPh)₂](ClO₄) (3) were prepared and used in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) as a new class of light emitters, where DEBf = dibenzofuran-4,6-diacetylide and DECz = 3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole-1,8-diacetylide. Although the flexible structure of Pt₂Au complex 1 (λ_em = 503 nm, Φ_em < 0.1%) results in weak photoluminescence in fluid CH₂Cl₂, complexes 2 (λ_em = 585 nm, Φ_em = 4.9%) and 3 (λ_em = 589 nm, Φ_em = 3.2%) with a rigid conformation give a much stronger phosphorescence. The displacement of two σ-bonded phenylacetylide ligands with a diacetylide ligand such as DEBf and DECz to fasten Pt₂Au structures facilitates greatly luminescent emission so that the emissive quantum yield in doping film is as high as 89% for 2 and 93% for 3. As revealed by a theoretical study, the severe structural distortion of diacetylide-linked Pt₂Au complexes 2 (λ_em = 585 nm) and 3 (λ_em = 589 nm) in a triplet excited state gives rise to significant red shifts of phosphorescent emission spectra relative to that of complex 1 (λ_em = 503 nm). By means of Pt₂Au complexes as phosphorescent emitters, solution-processed OLEDs achieved a relatively low external quantum efficiency (EQE < 9.5%) when commercial poly(ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) was used as the hole-injection layer (HIL). In contrast, the peak EQE was increased to 18.3% with a dramatic increase of efficiency by the use of modified HILs composed of PEDOT:PSS and PSS-Na, which provide a higher work function and a better film morphology.

Recent progress of light manipulation strategies in organic and perovskite solar cells

Organic and perovskite solar cells are suffering from the insufficient utilization of incident light and thus low light harvesting efficiency despite their rapid progress in the past decade. In this regard, light manipulation strategies have attracted numerous attention to solve this inherent limit. Herein, the recent advances in light manipulation techniques in this area are overviewed. The light manipulation mechanisms are illustrated to classify the structures. Various light manipulation structures, fabrication techniques, and corresponding results are given and discussed, addressing the suppression of surface reflection, nano/micro-structure-induced light scattering, and the plasmonic effects with periodic metallic patterns and metallic nanoparticles. A brief perspective on future research is also proposed for pursuing broadband light harvesting.
