A Mechanofluorochromic Push-Pull Small Molecule with Aggregation-Controlled Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties

Large-Area Rewritable Paper Based on Polyurethane Inverse Photonic Glass with Durable High-Resolution Information Storage and Structural Stability

To alleviate the negative effects of resource waste and environmental pollution caused by the excessive use of paper, technologies for rewritable paper have received widespread attention and in-depth research. Despite the growing interest in rewritable paper, meeting the requirements of large-scale preparation, long-lasting information storage time, high reversibility, and good environmental stability remains a huge challenge for this technology. This study developed a solvent-responsive copolymerized polyurethane-based rewritable paper with an inverse photonic glass structure (co-PUIPG paper). Comprehensive writing modes, including handwriting, spraying, and printing, were realized by using the swelling effect of different solvents and the local force field formed by capillary force to control the deformation degree of the inverse photonic glass structure. Co-PUIPG paper can persistently store high-resolution information and has a green and environmentally friendly "write-erase" method. Meanwhile, it exhibits good rewritability, as well as high mechanical strength and exceptional resistance to environmental factors, such as friction, high temperature, and sunlight. Because the spraying method can prepare templates quickly and extensively and polyurethane materials are economical, co-PUIPG rewritable paper possesses great potential as a substitute for commercial fiber paper and its industrialization is full of great possibilities.

Facile Synthesis of Tetraphenylethene (TPE)-Based Fluorophores Derived by π-Extended Systems: Opposite Mechanofluorochromism, Anti-Counterfeiting and Bioimaging

Although remarkable progresses are achieved in the design and development of the mono-shift in photoluminescence for mechanofluorochromic materials, it is still a severe challenge to explore the opposite mechanofluorochromic materials with both blue- and red-shifted photoluminescence. Herein, two unprecedented 4,5-bis(TPE)-1H-imidazole fused pyridine or quinoline-based fluorophores X-1 and X-2 were designed and synthesized, and X-1 and X-2, exhibit completely opposite mechanofluorochromic behavior. Under UV lamp, the color of pristine X-1 changed from blue to green with reversible redshifted 27 nm in fluorescence emission spectra after ground, while the color of pristine X-2 changed from red to yellow with reversible blue-shifted 74 nm after ground. The detailed characterizations (including PXRD, SEM and DSC) confirmed that this opposite mechanofluorochromism was attributed to the transformation of order-crystalline and amorphous states. The crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculation further explain that opposite mechanofluorochromic behavior take into account different π-π stacking mode by induced π-extended systems. In addition, these TPE-based fluorophores (X-1 and X-2) exhibited excellent bio-compatibility and fluorescence properties for bio-imaging, writable data storage and anti-counterfeiting materials.

Mechanofluorochromism of (D-π-)2A-type azine-based fluorescent dyes

Bathochromic or hypsochromic shift-type mechanofluorochromism (b-MFC or h-MFC) was found for (D-π-)2A-type azine-based fluorescent dyes OUY-2, OUK-2, and OUJ-2 possessing intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) characteristics from two (diphenylamino)carbazole-thiophene units as D (electron-donating group)-π (π-conjugated bridge) moieties to a pyridine, pyrazine, or triazine ring as A (electron-withdrawing group): grinding of the recrystallized dyes induced red or blue shifts of the fluorescent colors, that is, bathochromic or hypsochromic shifts of the fluorescence maximum wavelengths (λfl-solid max). The degrees of MFC evaluated by the absolute value of differences (Δλ fl-solid max) in λfl-solid max before and after grinding of the recrystallized dyes increased in the order of OUY-2 (+7 nm) < OUK-2 (-17 nm) < OUJ-2 (+45 nm), so that OUJ-2 exhibits obvious b-MFC, but OUK-2 exhibits h-MFC. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that the recrystallized dyes were in the crystalline state but the ground dyes were in the amorphous state. When the ground solids were heated above their crystallization temperatures (T c), the colors and fluorescent colors recovered to the original ones before grinding or converted to other ones, that is, heating the ground solids in the amorphous state induced the recrystallization to recover the original microcrystals or to form other microcrystals due to polymorph transformation. However, (D-π-)2Ph-type fluorescent dye OTK-2 having a phenyl group as a substitute for the azine rings exhibited non-obvious MFC. Molecular orbital (MO) calculations indicated that the values of the dipole moments (μ g) in the ground state were 4.0 debye, 1.4 debye, 3.2 debye, and 2.9 debye for OTK-2, OUY-2, OUK-2, and OUJ-2, respectively. Consequently, on the basis of experimental results and MO calculations, we have demonstrated that the MFC of the (D-π-)2A-type azine-based fluorescent dyes is attributed to reversible switching between the crystalline state of the recrystallized dyes and the amorphous state of the ground dyes with changes in the intermolecular dipole-dipole and π-π interactions before and after grinding. Moreover, this work reveals that (D-π-)2A fluorescent dyes possessing dipole moments of ca. 3 debye as well as moderate or intense ICT characteristics make it possible to activate the MFC.

Extending the Legible Time of Light-Responsive Rewritable Papers with a Tunable Photochromic Diarylethene Molecule

Inkless printing based on rewritable papers has recently made great progress because it can improve the utilization rate of papers, which is of great significance for saving resources and protecting the environment. Among them, light-responsive rewritable papers (LRPs) are a hot research topic because light is clean, easily available, wavelength and intensity adjustable, and noncontacting. However, the photochromic material, as the imaging substance of LRPs, is easily affected by environmental conditions, resulting in insufficient time to read the information. In view of this, we designed and constructed an acid/base tunable diarylethene molecular system that can effectively adjust the photochromic properties by reversibly changing the electron density of the diarylethene photoreaction center through protonation and demonstrated its potential as an imaging material with a longer legible time. What makes us more satisfied is that the acidification can not only extend the legible time of carrying information but also bring a clear and stable absorption/fluorescence imaging dual mode, which can better reflect details and improve contrast. Therefore, we believe that this tunable photochromic diarylethene molecule is a potential imaging material for the development of new LRPs.

Rewritable PEDOT Film Based on Water-Writing and Electroerasing

Rewritable paper has greatly promoted the sustainable development of society. However, the hydrophilicity/lipophilicity of the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) film limits its application as the rewritable paper. Herein, we constructed a repeatable writing/erasing pattern on a PEDOT film (rewritable PEDOT paper) by combining wettability control, water-induced dedoping, and an electrochemical redox reaction. The treatment with a medium-polarity/high-volatility solvent (MP/HVS) adjusted the wettability of the PEDOT film (water contact angle increased from 6.5° to 146.2°), contributing to the formation of a hydrophobic writable substrate. The treatment with a high-polarity solvent (HPS) induced the dedoping of anions in the PEDOT chain, resulting in the film's color changed from blue to purple and serving as a writing process. The intrinsic electrochemical redox (elimination of color change by doping/dedoping of lithium ions in the PEDOT chain) of the PEDOT film enabled the erasing process. This writing/erasing process can be repeated at least 10 times. The patterned PEDOT film maintained excellent stability to standing diverse solvents (low-polarity solvent (LPS) and MP/HVS), high temperatures (350 °C), and irradiation of different light wavelengths (wavelengths of 365, 380, 460, 520, and 645 nm). Additionally, the conductivity of the PEDOT film was quantitatively measured (impedance: LPS, increased 8.84%; MP/HVS, decreased 6.67%; and HPS, increased 27.97%) by fabricating a micropatterned PEDOT electrode. This work will provide a method for the fabrication of PEDOT-based optoelectronic functional materials.

A mechanochromic cyclemetalated cationic Ir(iii) complex with AIE activity by strategic modification of ligands

Two new aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active cyclemetalated cationic Ir(iii) complexes have been rationally designed and synthesized by introducing O-H substituents into Schiff base ligands. π-Hydrogen bonding is successfully exploited for the first time to realize the mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) property by the synergistic effect of O-H and F substituents in complex 1. An X-ray crystal structure analysis of the two complexes suggests that the intramolecular hydrogen bonding effectively restricted the molecular motions, thus causing typical AIE characteristics. More importantly, a loosely packed structure constructed from intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions (O-Hπ and C-HF) is obtained, and it is susceptible to mechanical stimulation. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) studies also prove that the MCL behavior of complex 1 is caused by the reversible phase transition from crystalline to amorphous state under grinding and solvent recrystallization, leading to a change in emission colors. A re-writable phosphorescence data recording device was fabricated using complex 1 as the active material. Our molecular design strategies provide a new avenue for achieving efficient phosphorescence materials with AIE and MCL properties.

Ultrastable Near-Infrared Nonlinear Organic Chromophore Nanoparticles with Intramolecular Charge Transfer for Dually Photoinduced Tumor Ablation

Near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive nanoparticles (NPs) of organic photosensitizers (PS) hold great promise as phototherapeutic agents for precision photoinduced cancer therapy. However, highly photostable PS nanoparticles with extraordinary photoconversion capacities are urgently desired to fully realize potent phototherapy. Here, NIR nonlinear organic chromophore nanoparticles (NOC-NPs) are shown as single-component PS for dually cooperative phototherapy. Upon 785 nm irradiation, excited NOC-NPs pass through intrinsic intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) channel to generate both abundant singlet oxygen and local hyperthermia, affording synergistic photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) for tumor ablation. Furthermore, NOC-NPs exhibit dramatic photostability, enhanced cellular uptake, effective cytoplasmic translocation, as well as preferable tumor accumulation, further ensuring favorable in vivo singlet oxygen generation and hyperthermia for photoinduced tumor ablation. Thus, NOC-NPs may represent novel high-performance PS for synergistic photoinduced cancer therapy, providing new insights into the development of potent PS for clinical translation.

Effect of 4-biphenyl groups on the charge transport and photovoltaic properties of arylamine based push–pull systems

The synthesis of two N,N-bis(4-biphenylyl)aniline (BPA) based push–pull is reported herein. Evaluation as donor materials in all-small-molecule planar-heterojunction organic solar cells lead to impressive fill factor (>73%) and promising power conversion efficiencies.

Easily Prepared and Reusable Films for Fast-Response Rewritable Light Printing

Paper, for writing and printing, is consumed a lot in modern life. However, the production of conventional paper could cause many problems, such as deforestation and environmental pollution. Therefore, it is necessary and urgent to explore novel strategies to solve these problems. In this work, a polyoxometalate-doped gelatin film with high strength, excellent transparency, and fast photochromic properties is designed and prepared. The film can display different colors by using a variety of reagents, exhibiting its potential application as a paper medium. Its rapid photochromic properties allow complex high-resolution images to be displayed by UV light printing. It is found that the mechanical and photochromic properties could be regulated by the introduction of triethylene glycol, and the fading process could be controlled by changing the temperature and humidity. Moreover, it is rewritable, self-repairable, and recyclable, and can also achieve long-term preservation without fading. It is envisioned that the environmentally friendly films with low cost, ease of preparation, and recycling advantages have the potential to be an alternative to conventional paper for writing and printing.

The Pathway to Intelligence: Using Stimuli-Responsive Materials as Building Blocks for Constructing Smart and Functional Systems

Systems that are intelligent have the ability to sense their surroundings, analyze, and respond accordingly. In nature, many biological systems are considered intelligent (e.g., humans, animals, and cells). For man-made systems, artificial intelligence is achieved by massively sophisticated electronic machines (e.g., computers and robots operated by advanced algorithms). On the other hand, freestanding materials (i.e., not tethered to a power supply) are usually passive and static. Hence, herein, the question is asked: can materials be fabricated so that they are intelligent? One promising approach is to use stimuli-responsive materials; these "smart" materials use the energy supplied by a stimulus available from the surrounding for performing a corresponding action. After decades of research, many interesting stimuli-responsive materials that can sense and perform smart functions have been developed. Classes of functions discussed include practical functions (e.g., targeting and motion), regulatory functions (e.g., self-regulation and amplification), and analytical processing functions (e.g., memory and computing). The pathway toward creating truly intelligent materials can involve incorporating a combination of these different types of functions into a single integrated system by using stimuli-responsive materials as the basic building blocks.

Mechanoresponsive Material of AIE-Active 1,4-Dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole Luminophores Bearing Tetraphenylethylene Group with Rewritable Data Storage

A new tetraphenylethylene (TPE) functionalized 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole derivative (APPTPECN) was synthesized with obvious aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active by simple synthetic method. APPTPECN exhibited reversible mechanofluorochromic (MFC) behavior. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations exhibited that the MFC nature is originated through a conversion from the microcrystalline to amorphous phase under the stimulus of external force. The results obtained would be of major help in understanding the MFC mechanism and designing new MFC materials. Compound APPTPECN has the potential possibility to employ in rewritable data storage and is of assistance in the rational design of smart luminescent materials.

Aggregate-Induced Self-Assembly and Ultrafast Dynamics of Light-Harvesting D-A-A Polymorphs

Organic dipolar molecules are an emerging class of light harvesters useful in electronic applications and have captured new urgency with the design and synthesis of new molecular structures for device testing. However, research has not evolved beyond the cyclical thin film preparation-device testing-chemical structural modification approach. Without an understanding of polymorphism, molecular photophysics at the interface or metastable morphologies that regulate charge carrier dynamics, it is not obvious a priori if a new molecular structure will produce a suitable thin film morphology for superior device performance without developing structure-function relationships that consider morphology and photophysics. Dipolar, light harvesting molecules are synthesized with a covalent, para-functionalized triphenylamine donor (D) and acceptor (A) in π-conjugated structures, D-A₁ and D-A₁ -A₂ , that have previously achieved 9.6% power conversion efficiency in thermally evaporated organic solar cell devices with C₇₀ . Solution processing and morphological manipulation are hypothesized to reduce ultrafast radiative charge recombination, unique to dipolar structures, that prevents full charge separation to the fullerene. The photophysics of the D-A interface using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy is explained, and microscopy data reveal a newly discovered, supramolecular amorphous polymer metastable state presented as a transient absorption assisted strategy for photofunctional polymorph design.

Functional Materials and Systems for Rewritable Paper

"Paper" has greatly contributed to the development and spread of civilization. Even in today's "digitalized" world, paper continues to play a key role in socioeconomic growth, as is evidenced by the growth in global paper consumption. Unfortunately, the use of paper has its cost in terms of the exhaustion of world's natural resources. Consequently, new, cost-effective technologies that preserve natural resources are required for this purpose. Functional materials have revolutionized the way people think about developing new technologies. Especially important in this regard are "smart reactive materials," which are capable of actively responding to external stimuli such as heat, light, mechanical stress, and specific molecular orientations. Moreover, functionalized chromogenic materials, which undergo reversible color switching upon external stimulation, have attracted great attention in the context of developing rewritable paper. Here, investigations of various materials and systems that are devised for use as rewritable paper are reviewed with the hope that the coverage will stimulate and guide future studies in this area.

Endowing Hydrochromism to Fluorans via Bioinspired Alteration of Molecular Structures and Microenvironments and Expanding Their Potential for Rewritable Paper

Interest and effort toward new materials for rewritable paper have increased dramatically because of the exciting advantages for sustainable development and better nature life cycle. Inspired by how nature works within living systems, herein, we have used fluorans, as a concept verification, to endow original acidochromic, basochromic or photochromic molecules with broader properties, such as switchable with solvent, water, heat, electricity, stress, other force, etc., via simplified methods (i.e., via variation of submolecular structure or microenvironments). The hydrochromic visual change and reversible behavior of selected molecules have been explored, and the primary mechanism at the atomic or subatomic level has been hypothesized. In addition, several newly demonstrated hydrochromic fluorans have been utilized for water-jet rewritable paper (WJRP), which exhibit great photostability, high hydrochromic contrast, and fast responsive rate and which can be reused at least 30 times without significant variation. The water-jet prints have good resolution and various colors and can keep legibility after a few months or years. This improved performance is a major step toward practical applications of WJRP.

Thermally induced crystallization, hole-transport, NLO and photovoltaic activity of a bis-diarylamine-based push-pull molecule

The synthesis of a molecule constituted of two diarylamine-based push-pull chromophores covalently linked via their nitrogen atom is described. Comparison of the electronic properties with the parent monomer shows that dimerization has negligible influence on the electronic properties of the molecule but exerts a dramatic impact on the capacity of the material to self-reorganize. Application of thermal annealing to thin films induces the crystallization under original morphologies, a process accompanied by a partial bleaching of the absorption in the visible range and by a huge increase of hole-mobility. X-ray diffraction data on single crystals reveal the presence of π-stacked organization with a non-centrosymmetric co-facial arrangement of the dipoles which leads to intrinsic 2^nd order bulk NLO properties of thin films as evidenced by second harmonic generation under 800 nm laser light. The implications of this thermally induced crystallization on the photovoltaic properties of the material are discussed on the basis of preliminary results obtained on simple bilayer organic solar cells.

Helical Self-Assembly-Induced Singlet-Triplet Emissive Switching in a Mechanically Sensitive System

In nanoscience, chirality has shown a significant ability to tune materials' electronic properties, whereas imposing macrochirality into the regulation of singlet-triplet features of organic optoelectronics remains a challenging research topic. Since the tuning for singlet and triplet excited-state properties in a single π-functional molecule connects to its multicolor luminescent application and potential improvement of internal quantum efficiency, we here report that supramolecular chirality can be employed to toggle the singlet and triplet emissions in a well-designed asterisk-shaped molecule. Employing a hexathiobenzene-based single luminophore as a prototype and functionalizing it with chiral α-lipoiate side groups, we find that helical nanoarchitectures can accordingly form in mixed DMF/H₂O solution. On this basis, switching between fluorescence and phosphorescence of the material can be realized upon helical self-assembly and dissociation. Such a behavior can be attributed to a helical-conformation-dependent manipulation of the intersystem crossing. Furthermore, reversible mechanoluminescence of the corresponding solid sample was also observed to rely on an analogous molecular self-assembly alternation. These results can probably provide new visions for the development of next-generation supramolecular chiral functional materials.

Indolylbenzothiadiazoles with varying substituents on the indole ring: a systematic study on the self-recovering mechanochromic luminescence

Tuning the Solid State Emission of the Carbazole and Cyano-Substituted Tetraphenylethylene by Co-Crystallization with Solvents

Solid state emissive materials with high quantum yields and tunable emissions are desirable for various applications. A new TPE derivative (1) with two carbazole moieties and two cyano groups is reported, which shows typical aggregation induced emission behavior. Four crystals 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d are obtained after crystallization from N,N-dimethylformamid (DMF), trichloromethane (CHCl₃ ), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and dichloromethane (CH₂ Cl₂ ), respectively. Crystal structural analyses reveal that (i) molecules of 1 co-crystallize with DMF, CHCl₃ , THF, and CH₂ Cl₂ in 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d, respectively, and (ii) conformations of 1 are different within 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d, and compound 1 within crystal 1a adopts the most twisting conformation. Crystalline solids 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d exhibit high emission quantum yields up to 0.65, but their emission colors are varied from blue to green. In comparison, the amorphous solid of 1 is yellow-emissive with emission maximum at 542 nm. Moreover, the blue- or green-emissive crystalline solids and the yellow-emissive amorphous solid can be inter-converted by the grinding of crystalline solids and exposure of the amorphous solid to vapors of appropriate solvents. It is also demonstrated that microrods of 1a, 1b, and 1d show typical optical waveguiding behavior.

The inner-induced effects of YCN in C76 on the structures and nonlinear optical properties

Very recently, an unprecedented novel monometallic cluster of fullerenes entrapping a yttrium cyanide (YCN) cluster inside a popular C82 cage YCN@Cs(6)-C82 was synthesized and characterized. Inspired by this investigation, four non-IPR YCN@C1(17459)-C76, YCN@C2v(19138)-C76, YCN@C2(17646)-C76, and YCN@C1(17894)-C76 (1, 2, 3, and 4) containing a pair of adjacent pentagons are designed to explore the encapsulated molecular effect on their interaction energies and nonlinear optical properties. The interaction energy (E int) values of 1, 2, 3, and 4 are -481.35 (1), -477.91 (2), -482.04 (3), -482.69 (4) kcal mol(-1), respectively, which shows that the E int value of 4 is the largest. Furthermore, the electron-transfer is mainly from the YCN to C76 cage. When YCN is encapsulated into C76 cage, we can find that the α0 values of the four molecules are very close, ranging from 6.50 × 10(2) to 6.65 × 10(2) au. Significantly, the first hyperpolarizabilities are in relation to the encapsulated molecular: 1.63 × 10(3) (1) > 8.03 × 10(2) (2) > 7.76 × 10(2) (4) > 4.86 × 10(2) au (3), the results show that the βtot value of 1 is the largest. Besides this, the encapsulation of the YCN to C76 cage brings some distinctive changes in its UV-vis spectra along with its other electronic properties that might be used by the experimentalists to develop the potential nonlinear optical nanomaterials based on endohedral metallofullerenes.
