Improving the Electroluminescence Properties of New Chrysene Derivatives with High Color Purity for Deep-Blue OLEDs

Two blue-emitting materials, 4-(12-([1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-5'-yl)chrysen-6-yl)-N,N-diphenylaniline (TPA-C-TP) and 6-([1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-5'-yl)-12-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)chrysene (TPE-C-TP), were prepared with the composition of a chrysene core moiety and terphenyl (TP), triphenyl amine (TPA), and tetraphenylethylene (TPE) moieties as side groups. The maximum photoluminescence (PL) emission wavelengths of TPA-C-TP and TPE-C-TP were 435 and 369 nm in the solution state and 444 and 471 nm in the film state. TPA-C-TP effectively prevented intermolecular packing through the introduction of TPA, a bulky aromatic amine group, and it showed an excellent photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 86% in the film state. TPE-C-TP exhibited aggregation-induced emission; the PLQY increased dramatically from 0.1% to 78% from the solution state to the film state. The two synthesized materials had excellent thermal stability, with a high decomposition temperature exceeding 460 °C. The two compounds were used as emitting layers in a non-doped device. The TPA-C-TP device achieved excellent electroluminescence (EL) performance, with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage co-ordinates of (0.15, 0.07) and an external quantum efficiency of 4.13%, corresponding to an EL peak wavelength of 439 nm.

Self-Assembled Tamoxifen-Selective Fluorescent Nanomaterials Driven by Molecular Structural Similarity

Most supramolecular systems were discovered by using a trial-and-error approach, leading to numerous synthetic efforts to obtain optimal supramolecular building blocks for selective guest encapsulation. Here, we report a simple coassembly strategy for preparing tamoxifen-selective supramolecular nanomaterials in an aqueous solution. The synthetic amphiphile molecule, 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethylene (TPE), promotes large tamoxifen aggregate disassembly into smaller, discrete aggregates such as ribbon-like and micellar assemblies in coassembled solutions, enhancing the solubility and dispersion. The TPE moiety exhibits enhanced emission upon tamoxifen interaction, enabling the observation of the coassembled species in an aqueous solution for cell imaging. The tamoxifen-selective fluorescent micelles in the presence of a 1:1 molar ratio of TPE derivative with tamoxifen show enhanced tamoxifen absorption and anticancer effects against MCF-7 breast cancer cells. These supramolecular approaches, based on the coassembly of building blocks with molecular structural similarity, can provide a novel strategy for the efficient development of selective molecular carriers with enhanced biological activities.

Synthesis, Photophysical Properties and Self-Assembly of a Tetraphenylethylene-Naphthalene Diimide Donor-Acceptor Molecule

The development of new π-conjugated molecular structures with controlled self-assembly and distinct photophysical properties is crucial for advancing applications in optoelectronics and biomaterials. This study introduces the synthesis and detailed self-assembly analysis of tetraphenylethylene (TPE) functionalized naphthalene diimide (NDI), a novel donor-acceptor molecular structure referred to as TPE-NDI. The investigation specifically focuses on elucidating the self-assembly behavior of TPE-NDI in mixed solvents of varying polarities, namely chloroform: methylcyclohexane (CHCl3 : MCH) and chloroform: methanol (CHCl3 : MeOH). Employing a several analytical methodologies, including UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and dynamic light scattering (DLS), these self-assembled systems have been comprehensively examined. The results reveal that TPE-NDI manifests as distinct particles in CHCl3 : MCH (fMCH =90 %), while transitioning to flower-like assemblies in CHCl3 : MeOH (fMeOH =90 %). This finding underscores the critical role of solvent polarity in dictating the morphological characteristics of TPE-NDI self-assembled aggregates. Furthermore, the study proposes a molecular packing mechanism, based on SEM data, offering significant insights into the design and development of functional supramolecular systems. Such advancements in understanding the molecular self-assembly new π-conjugated molecular structures are anticipated to pave the way for novel applications in material science and nanotechnology.

Functionalized Fluorescent Organic Nanoparticles Based AIE Enabling Effectively Targeting Cancer Cell Imaging

We report a fluorescent dye TM by incorporating the tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and cholesterol components into perylene bisimides (PBI) derivative. Fluorescence emission spectrum shows that the dye has stable red emission and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. The incorporation of cholesterol components triggers TM to show induced chirality through supramolecular self-assembly. The cRGD-functionalized nanoparticles were prepared by encapsulating fluorescent dyes with amphiphilic polymer matrix. The functionalized fluorescent organic nanoparticles exhibit excellent biocompatibility, large Stokes' shift and good photostability, which make them effective fluorescent probes for targeting cancer cells with high fluorescence contrast.

Tetraphenylethylene-Based Photoluminescent Self-Assembled Nanoparticles: Preparation and Biological Evaluation

The conjugation of tetraphenylethylene (TPE) with podophyllotoxin, N-desacetylthiocolchicine, and cabazitaxel through a sebacic acid linker led to the formation of fluorescent nanoparticles. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and photoluminescence spectroscopy were used for the identification and characterization of the fluorescent nanoparticles. The biological evaluation was determined in three human ovarian (KURAMOCHI, OVCAR3, OVSAHO) and three human breast (MCF7, SKBR 3, and MDA-MB231) cancer cell lines. In the case of cabazitaxel, the nanoparticles maintained the activity of the parent drug, at the low nanomolar range, while exhibiting high blue fluorescence. The internalization of the fluorescent NPs into cells was detected using immunofluorescence assay.

An AIE-Active NIR Fluorescent Probe with Good Water Solubility for the Detection of Aβ1-42 Aggregates in Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD), an amyloid-related disease, seriously endangers the health of elderly individuals. According to current research, its main pathogenic factor is the amyloid protein, which is a kind of fibrillar aggregate formed by noncovalent self-assembly of proteins. Based on the characteristics of aggregation-induced emission (AIE), a bislactosyl-decorated tetraphenylethylene (TPE) molecule TMNL (TPE + malononitrile + lactose), bearing two malononitrile substituents, was designed and synthesized in this work. The amphiphilic TMNL could self-assemble into fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) with near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence emission in physiological PBS (phosphate buffered saline), achieving excellent fluorescent enhancement (47-fold) upon its combination with Aβ_1-42 fibrils. TMNL was successfully applied to image Aβ_1-42 plaques in the brain tissue of AD transgenic mice, and due to the AIE properties of TMNL, no additional rinsing process was necessary. It is believed that the probe reported in this work should be useful for the sensitive detection and accurate localization mapping of Aβ_1-42 aggregates related to Alzheimer's disease.

AIEgen-Conjugated Phase-Separating Peptides Illuminate Intracellular RNA through Coacervation-Induced Emission

Intrinsically disordered peptides drive dynamic liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in membraneless organelles and encode cellular functions in response to environmental stimuli. Engineering design on phase-separating peptides (PSPs) holds great promise for bioimaging, vaccine delivery, and disease theranostics. However, recombinant PSPs are devoid of robust luminogen or suitable cell permeability required for intracellular applications. Here, we synthesize a peptide-based RNA sensor by covalently connecting tetraphenylethylene (TPE), an aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgens), to tandem peptide repeats of (RRASL)_n (n = 1, 2, 3). Interestingly, the conjugation of TPE luminogen promotes liquid-liquid phase separation of the peptide repeats, and the minimum coacervation concentration (MCC) of TPE-(RRASL)_n is decreased by an order of magnitude, compared to that of the untagged, TPE-free counterparts. Moreover, the luminescence of TPE-(RRASL)_n is enhanced by up to 700-fold with increasing RNA concentration, which is attributed to the constricted rotation of the TPE moiety as a result of peptide/RNA coacervates within the droplet phase. Besides, at concentrations above MCC, TPE-(RRASL)_n can efficiently penetrate through human gallbladder carcinoma cells (SGC-996), translocate into the cell nucleus, and colocalize with intracellular RNA. These observations suggest that AIEgen-conjugated PSPs can be used as droplet-based biosensors for intracellular RNA imaging through a regime of coacervation-induced emission.

Molecular Cage with Dual Outputs of Photochromism and Luminescence Both in Solution and the Solid State

The rational design of stimuli-responsive materials requires a deep understanding of the structure-activity relationship. Herein, we proposed an intramolecular conformation-locking strategy─incorporating flexible tetraphenylethylene (TPE) luminogens into the rigid scaffold of a molecular cage─to produce a molecular photoswitch with dual outputs of luminescence and photochromism in solution and in the solid states at once. The molecular cage scaffold, which restricts the intramolecular rotations of the TPE moiety, not only helps to preserve the luminescence of TPE in a dilute solution but facilitates the reversible photochromism on account of the intramolecular cyclization/cycloreversion reactions. Furthermore, we demonstrate assorted applications of this multiresponsive molecular cage, e.g., photo-switchable patterning, anticounterfeiting, and selective vapochromism sensing.

Chiral Supramolecular Multiblock Copolymerization Accompanying Chirality Transfer in Heterostructures via Living Chain Growth

We report the unique synthesis of chiral supramolecular tri- and penta-BCPs with controllable chirality using kinetically adjusted seeded supramolecular copolymerization in THF and DMSO (99:1, v/v). Tetraphenylethylene (D- and L-TPE) derivatives bearing D- and L-alanine side chains formed thermodynamically favored chiral products via a kinetically trapped in monomeric state with a long lag phase. In contrast, achiral TPE-G containing glycine moieties did not form a supramolecular polymer owing to the energy barrier in its kinetically trapped state. We show that the copolymerization of the metastable states of TPE-G not only enables the generation of supramolecular BCPs by the seeded living growth method, but also transfers chirality at the seed ends. This research demonstrates the generation of chiral supramolecular tri- and penta-BCPs with B-A-B, A-B-A-B-A, and C-B-A-B-C block patterns accompanying chirality transfer via seeded living polymerization.

Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Nanostructures: Beyond Biomedical Applications

The discovery of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon in 2001 has had a significant impact on materials development across different research disciplines. AIE-active materials have been widely exploited for various applications in optoelectronics, sensing, biomedical, and stimuli-responsive systems, etc. This is made possible by integrating AIE features with other fields of science and engineering, such as nanoscience and nanotechnology. AIE has been extensively employed, particularly for biomedical applications, such as biosensing, bioimaging, and theranostics. However, development of AIE-based nanotechnology for other applications is comparatively less, although there have been increasing research activities in recent years. Given the significance and potential of the marriage between AIE hallmark and nanotechnology in AIE-active materials development, this review article summarizes and showcases the latest research efforts in AIE-based nanomaterials, including nanomaterials synthesis and their nonbiomedical applications, such as sensing, optoelectronics, functional coatings, and stimuli-responsive systems. A perspective on the outlook of AIE-based nanostructured materials and relevant nanotechnology for nonbiomedical applications will be provided, giving an insight into how to design AIE-active nanostructures as well as their applications beyond the biomedical domain.

Multi Stimuli-Responsive Aggregation-Induced Emission Active Polymer Platform Based on Tetraphenylethylene-Appended Maleic Anhydride Terpolymers

Multi stimuli-responsive aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active polymers have great application prospects in high-tech innovations. Herein, three types of tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-containing monomers were synthesized and utilized in preparing TPE-appended maleic anhydride terpolymers. After hydrolysis, the produced TPE-appended maleic acid terpolymers have identical linear charge densities but different "primary" structures, which created widely varied microenvironments around the carboxylate and TPE groups. Benefiting from the synergistic interaction of the TPE moiety and the terpolymer conformation change, the TPE-appended maleic acid terpolymers exhibited fluorescence changes in response to multi stimuli, including pH, ionic strength, Ca²⁺, and bovine serum albumin. On both the "signaling" and the "stimuli acceptor" sides, the multi stimuli-responsive fluorescence behavior was influenced markedly by the terpolymer primary structure. The fundamental insights gained in the present work are important for developing an efficient and versatile stimuli-responsive AIE-active polymer platform for chemo-sensing, bioimaging, and so on.

pH-Responsive fluorescent supramolecular nanoparticles based on tetraphenylethylene-labelled chitosan and a six-fold carboxylated tribenzotriquinacene

We synthesized a new tetraphenylethylene-modified chitosan bioconjugate, CS-TPE, that shows the aggregation-induced emission effect. It can self-assemble into fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles in an aqueous solution at pH 5.3 either alone or with the water-soluble bowl-shaped six-fold carboxylated tribenzotriquinacene derivative TBTQ-C₆ via host-guest binding. The spherical nanoparticles formed by CS-TPE amphiphiles or TBTQ-C₆/CS-TPE supra-amphiphiles disintegrated under alkaline stimulation at pH 10.4 and the dispersion of the aggregates after the collapse in the presence of TBTQ-C₆ was greatly improved. In addition, the fluorescence of CS-TPE was significantly enhanced by introducing TBTQ-C₆, and remained relatively stable with variations in pH for both CS-TPE and TBTQ-C₆/CS-TPE. Such pH-responsive supramolecular spherical nanoparticles with stable fluorescence emission based on CS-TPE or TBTQ-C₆/CS-TPE may find applications in various fields, including the development of visual oral drug delivery systems.

Solvent-Triggered Fast and Visible Switching between Cage- and Channel-Type Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks

The inherent weak bonding nature of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) performs like a double-edged sword in that it endows HOFs with superiority in processability and dynamicity but deactivates its on-demand controllability in the crystalline phase. Herein, based on the synergy of dynamic H-bonding interactions and the tailored low solubility in common organic solvents, reversible and fast topological transitions between cage- and channel-type HOFs were achieved upon immersing in the solution state. The aggregation-induced-emission character of the tecton facilitates the visualization of the elusive initial transition process with high sensitivity. In addition, the visible transition from cage- and channel-type HOFs to thermally stable crystalline phases is also achieved under thermal induction.

Triphenylamine, Carbazole or Tetraphenylethylene-Functionalized Benzothiadiazole Derivatives: Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE), Solvatochromic and Different Mechanoresponsive Fluorescence Characteristics

The development of mechanochromic fluorophors with high-brightness, solid-state fluorescence is very significant and challenging. Herein, highly solid-state emissive triphenylamine, carbazole and tetraphenylethylene-functionalized benzothiadiazole derivatives were developed. These compounds showed remarkable aggregation-induced emission and solvatochromic fluorescence characteristics. Furthermore, these fluorogenic compounds also displayed different mechanically triggering fluorescence responses.

Multi-Decker Emissive Supramolecular Architectures Based on Shape-Complementary Ligands Pair

Dye aggregates have attracted a great deal of attention due to their widespread applications in organic light-emitting devices, light-harvesting systems, etc. However, the strategies to precisely control chromophores with specific spatial arrangements still remain a great challenge. In this work, a series of double- and triple-decker supramolecular complexes are successfully constructed by coordination-driven self-assembly of carefully designed shape-complementary ligands, one claw-like tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based host ligand and three tetratopic or ditopic guest ligands. The spatial configurations of these assemblies (one double-decker and three "S-shaped" or "X-shaped" triple-decker structures) depend on the angles of these TPE-derived ligands. Notably, the three triple-decker structures are geometric isomers. Furthermore, photophysical studies show that these complexes exhibit different ratios of radiative (k_r ) and non-radiative (k_nr ) rate constant due to the different spatial arrangements of TPE moieties. This study provides not only a unique strategy for the construction of multi-stacks with specific spatial arrangement, but also a promising platform for investigating the aggregation behavior of fluorescent chromophores.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Boosting the Study of Polymer Science

The past one hundred years witness the great development of polymer science. The advancement of polymer science is closely related with the developing of characterization techniques and methods, from viscometry in molecular weight determination to advanced techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance and scanning electron microscopy. However, these techniques are normally constrained to tedious sample preparation, high cost, harsh experimental condition, or ex-situ characterization. Fluorescence technology has the merits of high sensitivity and direct visualization. Contrary to conventional aggregation-causing quenching fluorophores, those dyes with aggregation-induced emission characteristic show high emission efficiency in aggregate states. Based on the restriction of intramolecular motions for AIE properties, the AIE materials are very sensitive to the surrounding microenvironments owing to the twisted propeller-like structures and therefore reveal great potentials in polymer's study. The AIE concept has been successfully used in polymer's study and provides us a deeper understanding on polymer structure and properties. In this review, the applications of AIEgens in polymer science for visualizing polymerization, glass transition, dissolution, crystallization, gelation, self-assembly, phase separation, cracking and self-healing were exemplified and summarized. Linked Rotaxane Structure Restricts Local Molecular Motions in Solution to Enhance Fluorescence Properties of Tetraphenylethylene

The restriction of local molecular motions is critical for improving the fluorescence quantum yields (FQYs) and the photostability of fluorescent dyes. Herein, we report a supramolecular approach to enhance the performance of fluorescent dyes by incorporating a linked rotaxane structure with permethylated α-cyclodextrins. Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives generally exhibit low FQYs in solution due to the molecular motions in the excited state. We show that TPE with linked rotaxane structures on two sides displays up to 15-fold higher FQYs. Detailed investigations with variable temperature ¹ H NMR, UV-Vis, and photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed that the linked rotaxane structure rigidifies the TPE moiety and thus suppresses the local molecular motions and non-radiative decay. Moreover, the linked rotaxane structure enhances the FQY of the dye in various solvents, including aqueous solutions, and improves the photostability through the inhibition of local molecular motions in the excited TPE.

A Flexible Chemosensor Based on Colorimetric and Fluorescent Dual Modes for Rapid and Sensitive Detection of Hypochlorite Anion

A flexible chemosensor has been developed based on colorimetric and fluorescent dual modes using tetraphenylethylene-centered tetraaniline (TPE4A) for rapid and sensitive detection of hypochlorite anion. The fluorescent probe TPE4A exhibits a unique aggregation-induced emission (AIE) character which is proved by a blue shift of the fluorescent peak from 544 to 474 nm with the water equivalents increasing. With the addition of hypochlorite in solution, the absorbance of the probe changes and the responding fluorescence color can be observed to change from light green to purple. The detection limit of hypochlorite is 1.80 × 10-4 M in solution, and the visual detection limit is 1.27 µg/cm2 with the naked eye for the flexible paper-based chemosensor. The proposed flexible chemosensors show a good selectivity and sensitivity which has great potential for effective detection of hypochlorite anions without any spectroscopic instrumentation.

A Novel Strategy to Design and Construct AIE-active Mechanofluorochromic Materials via Regulation of Molecular Structure

In this work, we first designed and synthesized tetraphenylene-fused aryl-imidazole derivatives TM-1-4 via regulation of molecular structure, which were consisted of 1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline, 1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole, 4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole, 3,3'-(1H-imidazole-4,5-diyl)dipyridine moieties and AIE-active tetraphenylethene units, respectively. The results illustrated that TM-1-4 exhibited clear AIE characteristics. Meanwhile, TM-2 and TM-3 show excellent solid emission properties (Φ_TM-2 =13.73 % and Φ_TM-3 =36.21 %), whereas TM-1 and TM-4 exhibit the opposite properties (Φ_TM-1 =1.48 % and Φ_TM-4 =4.83 %). The multiple rotors (pyridine and benzene ring) causes twisted conformations of the molecule that prevents π-π stacking and enhances solid emission(ΦTM-2<ΦTM-3, ΦTM-1<ΦTM-4). Significantly, TM-2 and TM-3 also exhibited reversible mechanochromic behavior (Emission red shifts: Δλ_TM-2 =43 nm and Δλ_TM-3 =41 nm) with color changes between blue and green emissions. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) suggested the disordered state of ground sample could be readily returned to an ordered crystalline. Therefore, the mechanochromisms of TM-2 and TM-3 are ascribable to the phase transformation between crystal and amorphous structure. The single crystal X-ray analysis of TM-2 reveals a twisted conformation for TPE moiety and the absence of π-π intermolecular stacking. These excellent optical properties of TM-2 and TM-3 make them potentially applications in mechanochromic materials and imaging agents.

Unexpected Fluorescence Emission Behaviors of Tetraphenylethylene-Functionalized Polysiloxane and Highly Reversible Sensor for Nitrobenzene

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE), a typical luminogen with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features, has been widely used to prepare AIE fluorescent materials. In this study, TPE-functionalized polydimethylsiloxane (n-TPE-AP-PDMS) was successfully synthesized by attaching TPE to polydimethylsiloxane via aza-Michael addition. The introduction of polydimethylsiloxane to TPE had no obvious effect on photophysical properties. Intriguingly, n-TPE-AP-PDMS exhibited two opposite fluorescence emission behaviors in different systems: aggregation-induced quenching (ACQ) behavior in a tetrahydrofuran/water mixture and typical AIE phenomenon in a tetrahydrofuran/hexane mixture. This unexpected transition from ACQ to AIE can be attributed to a twisted intramolecular charge-transfer effect and flexible aminopropyl polydimethylsiloxane. n-TPE-AP-PDMS was further used as a fluorescent probe to detect nitrobenzene and it showed high quenching efficiency. Moreover, the n-TPE-AP-PDMS film showed high reversibility so that the quenching efficiency remained constant after five cycles. This work can provide a deeper understanding of AIE behavior and guidance to develop a new AIE polymer for chemosensors with high performance.

Side-Chain Type Polysulfates: Their Synthesis, AIE Properties and Applications for p-Nitrophenol Detection in Water

Two small molecular monomers, ph-TPE and ph-TPE-CN, and their homopolymers Poly (ph-TPE) and Poly (ph-TPE-CN) containing tetra phenylethylene and sulfate structures, were synthesized by a sulfur (VI) fluorine exchange click reaction (SuFEx) and radical polymerization. All the monomers and polymers exhibit a typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect both in the solid state and aggregated state. Moreover, based on the intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect between the tetra phenylethylene chromophore and p-nitrophenol, both polymers could be used for the selective detection of p-nitrophenol. The detection limit and reactivity coefficient of Poly (ph-TPE) are 0.081 μM and 5.15×10⁴  M^-1 , respectively, whereas the detection limit and reactivity coefficient of Poly (ph-TPE-CN) are 0.077 μM and 1.81×10⁴  M^-1 , respectively. This can be attributed to the greater sensitivity of Poly (ph-TPE-CN) to p-nitrophenol than that of Poly (ph-TPE). This work provides a new methodology for the preparation and broadening application of side-chain type AIE-active polysulfate fluorescent probes.

DNA Condensation Triggered by the Synergistic Self-Assembly of Tetraphenylethylene-Viologen Aggregates and CT-DNA

Development of small organic chromophores as DNA condensing agents, which explore supramolecular interactions and absorbance or fluorescence-based tracking of condensation and gene delivery processes, is in the initial stages. Herein, we report the synthesis and electrostatic/groove binding interaction-directed synergistic self-assembly of the aggregates of two viologen-functionalized tetraphenylethylene (TPE-V) molecules with CT-DNA and subsequent concentration-dependent DNA condensation process. TPE-V molecules differ in their chemical structure according to the number of viologen units. Photophysical and morphological studies have revealed the interaction of the aggregates of TPE-V in Tris buffer with CT-DNA, which transforms the fibrous network structure of CT-DNA to partially condensed beads-on-a-string-like arrangement with TPE-V aggregates as beads via electrostatic and groove binding interactions. Upon further increasing the concentration of TPE-V, the "beads-on-a-string"-type assembly of TPE-V/CT-DNA complex changes to completely condensed compact structures with 40-50 nm in diameter through the effective charge neutralization process. Enhancement in the melting temperature of CT-DNA, quenching of the fluorescence emission of ethidium bromide/CT-DNA complex, and the formation of induced CD signal in the presence of TPE-V molecules support the observed morphological changes and thereby verify the DNA condensation abilities of TPE-V molecules. Decrease in the hydrodynamic size, increase in the zeta potential value with the addition of TPE-V molecules to CT-DNA, failure of TPE-V/cucurbit(8)uril complex to condense CT-DNA, and the enhanced DNA condensation ability of TPE-V2 with two viologen units compared to TPE-V1 with a single viologen unit confirm the importance of positively charged viologen units in the DNA condensation process. Initial cytotoxicity analysis on A549 cancer and WI-38 normal cells revealed that these DNA condensing agents are non-toxic in nature and hence could be utilized in further cellular delivery studies.

Color-tunable and Highly Emissive Solid Materials Constructed from Tetraphenylethylene-o-carborane-based Building Blocks: Synthesis, Aggregation-induced emission, and Photophysics

A novel kind of expanded tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-carborane-TPE pentad has been synthesized by using two adjacent carborane moieties as central bridges and three TPE units in lateral positions. Its solid-state fluorescence quantum yield was substantially increased to 68.2% by expanding the number of bridges between carborane and TPE. Subsequently, the emission color shifted from blue to orange-yellow (126 nm). Mechanical insights into the electronic structure of the extended TPE-carborane-TPE pentads were obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Coordination-Induced Emission from Tetraphenylethylene Units and Their Applications

Thanks to the potential of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena, improved stabilities, and the good selectivity and sensitivity of the chemical responses exhibited by the products, coordination-driven self-assembly with tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units has recently received much attention and has been widely investigated for application in chemical sensors, cell imaging agents, light-harvesting systems, and others. Several reviews have emerged on the topics of AIE chemistry and aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen)-based supramolecular assembles, however, there is still a distinct lack of full overviews of emission enhancement from the viewpoint of metal-coordination effects. Thus, this minireview offers recent advances that have been made in the design and application of TPE-based metallacycles, metallacages, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs).

Facile Fabrication of an AIE-Active Metal-Organic Framework for Sensitive Detection of Explosives in Liquid and Solid Phases

Nowadays, the practical applications of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based fluorescence detectors are severely hindered because of the complex synthesis process of linkers or heavy metal contamination. The development of a simple, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly fluorescence sensing system remains a huge challenge. In this study, we designed and synthesized a TPE@γ-CD-MOF-K complex using the facile in situ encapsulation method. The unique pore structure of γ-CD-MOF allowed it to effectively include TPE and explosives as guests simultaneously. The TPE@γ-CD-MOF-K showed stronger fluorescence emission than TPE and sensitive fluorescence quenching activities in response to nitro-aromatic compounds in the liquid phase with detection limits as low as 3 ppm. Furthermore, TPE@γ-CD-MOF-K can also effectively detect nitro-aromatic compounds in the solid state, which is very convenient for practical detection of explosives. The unique pore structure of γ-CD-MOF-K and the interaction between K⁺ and nitro compounds play important roles in solid-state quenching.

Synthesis and Fluorescent Thermoresponsive Properties of Tetraphenylethylene-Labeled Methylcellulose

Functional polymer, especially the one based on renewable and sustainable materials, has attracted increasing attention to satisfy the growing demand for the design of stimuli-responsive devices. Methylcellulose (MC) is a water-soluble derivative of cellulose, which has been widely used in many fields for its biocompatibility and biological inertness. In this work, MC is labeled by tetraphenylethylene (TPE) via azide-alkyne click reaction to obtain a fluorescent cellulose-based derivative of MC-TPE. The degree of substitution of MC-TPE is determined to be 0.074, which can be self-assembled into micelles in water with the size of 42 ± 6 nm. MC-TPE shows thermoresponsivity and thermoreversibility in size, transmittance, and fluorescence, enabling it to work as a fluorescent thermosensor. Moreover, MC-TPE exhibits nontoxicity and biocompatibility, allowing its application in MCF-7 cell imaging. Therefore, this newly functional natural polymer shows promising potentials in the fields of sensing and bioimaging.

Metallo-Helicoid with Double Rims: Polymerization Followed by Folding by Intramolecular Coordination

In this study, we established a feasible strategy to construct a new type of metallo-polymer with helicoidal structure through the combination of covalent polymerization and intramolecular coordination-driven self-assembly. In the design, a tetratopic monomer (M) was prepared with two terminal alkynes in the outer rim for polymerization, and two terpyridines (TPYs) in the inner rim for subsequent folding by selective intramolecular coordination. Then, the linear covalent polymer (P) was synthesized by polymerization of M via Glaser-Hay homocoupling reaction. Finally, intramolecular coordination interactions between TPYs and Zn(II) folded the backbone of P into a right- or left-handed metallo-helicoid (H) with double rims. Owing to multiple positive charges on the inner rim of helicoid, double-stranded DNA molecules (dsDNA) could interact with H through electrostatic interactions. Remarkably, dsDNA allowed exclusive formation of H with right handedness by means of chiral induction.

Supramolecular Assembly of TPE-Based Glycoclusters with Dicyanomethylene-4H-pyran (DM) Fluorescent Probes Improve Their Properties for Peroxynitrite Sensing and Cell Imaging

Two red-emitting dicyanomethylene-4H-pyran (DM) based fluorescent probes were designed and used for peroxynitrite (ONOO^- ) detection. Nevertheless, the aggregation-caused quenching effect diminished the fluorescence and restricted their further applications. To overcome this problem, tetraphenylethylene (TPE) based glycoclusters were used to self-assemble with these DM probes to obtain supramolecular water-soluble glyco-dots. This self-assembly strategy enhanced the fluorescence intensity, leading to an enhanced selectivity and activity of the resulting glyco-dot comparing to DM probes alone in PBS buffer. The glyco-dots also exhibited better results during fluorescence sensing of intracellular ONOO^- than the probes alone, thereby offering scope for the development of other similar supramolecular glyco-systems for chemical biological studies.

Highly Efficient Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Modulations of Dual-AIEgens between a Tetraphenylethylene Donor and a Merocyanine Acceptor in Photo-Switchable [2]Rotaxanes and Reversible Photo-Patterning Applications

A series of novel photo-switchable [2]rotaxanes (i.e., Rot-A-SP and Rot-B-SP before and after shuttling controlled by acid-base, respectively) containing one spiropyran (SP) unit (as a photochromic stopper) on the axle and two tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units on the macrocycle were synthesized via click reaction. Upon UV/visible light exposure, both mono-fluorophoric rotaxanes Rot-A-SP and Rot-B-SP with the closed form (i.e., non-emissive SP unit) could be transformed into the open form (i.e., red-emissive merocyanine (MC) unit) to acquire their respective bi-fluorophoric Rot-A-MC and Rot-B-MC reversibly. The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties of bi-fluorophoric TPE combined with MC AIEgens of these designed rotaxanes and mixtures in semi-aqueous solutions induced interesting ratiometric photoluminescence (PL) and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) behaviors, which were further investigated and verified by dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements along with theoretical studies. Accordingly, in contrast to the model axle (Axle-MC) and the analogous mixture (Mixture-MC, containing the axle and macrocycle components in a 1:1 molar ratio), more efficient FRET behaviors and stronger red PL emissions were obtained from dual-AIEgens between a blue-emissive TPE donor (PL emission at 468 nm) and a red-emissive MC acceptor (PL emission at 668 nm) in both novel photo-switchable [2]rotaxanes Rot-A-MC and Rot-B-MC under various external modulations, including water content, UV/Vis irradiation, pH value, and temperature. Furthermore, the reversible fluorescent photo-patterning applications of Rot-A-SP in a powder form and a solid film with excellent photochromic and fluorescent behaviors are first investigated in this report.

Multi-Stimuli Responsive FRET Processes of Bifluorophoric AIEgens in an Amphiphilic Copolymer and Its Application to Cyanide Detection in Aqueous Media

A novel amphiphilic aggregation-induced emission (AIE) copolymer, that is, poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-SP), consisting of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) as a hydrophilic unit and a tetraphenylethylene-spiropyran monomer (TPE-SP) as a bifluorophoric unit is reported. Upon UV exposure, the close form of non-emissive spiropyran (SP) in poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-SP) can be photo-switched to the open form of emissive merocyanine (MC) in poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-MC) in an aqueous solution, leading to ratiometric fluorescence of AIEgens between green TPE and red MC emissions at 517 and 627 nm, respectively, via Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Distinct FRET processes of poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-MC) can be observed under various UV and visible light irradiations, acid-base conditions, thermal treatments, and cyanide ion interactions, which are also confirmed by theoretical studies. The subtle perturbations of environmental factors, such as UV exposure, pH value, temperature, and cyanide ion, can be detected in aqueous media by distinct ratiometric fluorescence changes of the FRET behavior in the amphiphilic poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-MC). Moreover, the first FRET sensor polymer poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-MC) based on dual AIEgens of TPE and MC units is developed to show a very high selectivity and sensitivity with a low detection limit (LOD = 0.26 μM) toward the cyanide ion in water, which only contain an approximately 1% molar ratio of the bifluorophoric content and can be utilized in cellular bioimaging applications for cyanide detections.

Tetraphenylethylene@Graphene Oxide with Switchable Fluorescence Triggered by Mixed Solvents for the Application of Repeated Information Encryption and Decryption

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials present unique solid-state fluorescence. However, there remains a challenge in the switching of fluorescence quenching/emitting of AIE materials, limiting the application in information encryption. Herein, we report a composite of tetraphenylethylene@graphene oxide (TPE@GO) with switchable microstructure and fluorescence. We choose GO as a fluorescence quencher to control the fluorescence of TPE by controlling the aggregation structure. First, TPE coating with an average thickness of about 31 nm was deposited at the GO layer surface, which is the critical thickness at which the fluorescence can be largely quenched because of the fluorescence resonance energy transfer. After spraying a mixed solvent (good and poor solvents of TPE) on TPE@GO, a blue fluorescence of TPE was emitted during the drying process. During the treatment of mixed solvents, the planar TPE coating was dissolved in THF first and then the TPE molecules aggregated into nanoparticles (an average diameter of 65 nm) in H₂O during the volatilization of THF. We found that the fluorescence switching of the composite is closely related to the microstructural change of TPE between planar and granular structures, which can make the upper TPE molecules in and out of the effective quenching region of GO. This composite, along with the treatment method, was used as an invisible ink in repeated information encryption and decryption. Our work not only provides a simple strategy to switch the fluorescence of solid-state fluorescent materials but also demonstrates the potential for obtaining diverse material structures through compound solvent treatment.

Tweaking the Molecular Geometry of a Tetraperylenediimide Acceptor

Partial flattening of the spatially extended molecular scaffold has been employed as an effective tactic to improve the device performance of a perylenediimide (PDI)-based small-molecule acceptor because the less twisted yet not completely planar molecular geometry is anticipated to improve the molecular packing and thereby attain a more suitable balance between the carrier transport ability and phase domain size. A small-molecule acceptor BF-PDI comprising four α-substituted PDI units attached around a 9,9'-bifluorenylidene (BF) central moiety is designed and studied in polymer solar cells. The BF group is deemed a ring-fused analogue of the tetraphenylethylene (TPE) unit. Due to the less twisted and better conjugated BF skeleton, BF-PDI displays more delocalized lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. By virtue of both the electronic and steric effects, BF-PDI is suggested to bring about superior intermolecular stacking and donor-acceptor phase separation morphology in blend films. Indeed, the experimental results show that BF-PDI displays improved charge transport ability and a higher power-conversion efficiency of 8.05% than that of TPE-PDI. Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray diffraction and resonant soft X-ray scattering confirm the more compact and ordered molecular packing as well as smaller domain sizes in the P3TEA/BF-PDI blend.

An Aggregation-Induced Emission-Based "Turn-On" Fluorescent Probe for Facile Detection of Gaseous Formaldehyde

Gaseous formaldehyde (FA), a common indoor pollutant, presents a serious threat to human health. As an efficient tool for FA detection, fluorescent probes exhibit the advantages of low cost, ease of use, facile operation, etc. However, previously developed FA fluorescent probes are mostly based on fluorophores with aggregation-caused quenching features and thus require dispersion in solvent to detect FA. In this study, a fluorescent probe (TPE-FA) based on an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorophore (tetraphenylethylene) has been developed for facile detection of gaseous FA through a fluorescence "turn-on" response. TPE-FA reacts with FA through 2-aza-Cope sigmatropic rearrangement. Based on the AIE features of TPE-FA, we fabricated a portable solid sensor, FA test plate, by directly loading TPE-FA on high performance thin-layer chromatography silica gel plate. The FA test plate achieved sensitive, selective, and quantitative detection of gaseous FA. The detection limit (0.036 mg/m³) of the FA test plate is lower than the air quality guideline value of gaseous FA (0.1 mg/m³) recommended by WHO. As a solid sensor for gaseous FA, the FA test plate based on AIE molecule is portable, which enables safer and more convenient use and transport compared to solution-based sensors.

Scandium complexes with the tetraphenylethylene and anthracene dianions

The structural study of Sc complexes containing dianions of anthracene and tetraphenylethylene should shed some light on the nature of rare-earth metal-carbon bonding. The crystal structures of (18-crown-6)bis(tetrahydrofuran-κO)sodium bis(η⁶-1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethenediyl)scandium(III) tetrahydrofuran disolvate, [Na(C₄H₈O)₂(C₁₂H₂₄O₆)][Sc(C₂₆H₂₀)₂]·2C₄H₈O or [Na(18-crown-6)(THF)₂][Sc(η⁶-C₂Ph₄)₂]·2(THF), (1b), (η⁵-1,3-diphenylcyclopentadienyl)(tetrahydrofuran-κO)(η⁶-1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethenediyl)scandium(III) toluene hemisolvate, [Sc(C₁₇H₁₃)(C₂₆H₂₀)(C₄H₈O)]·0.5C₇H₈ or [(η⁵-1,3-Ph₂C₅H₃)Sc(η⁶-C₂Ph₄)(THF)]·0.5(toluene), (5b), poly[[(μ₂-η³:η³-anthracenediyl)bis(η⁶-anthracenediyl)bis(η⁵-1,3-diphenylcyclopentadienyl)tetrakis(tetrahydrofuran)dipotassiumdiscandium(III)] tetrahydrofuran monosolvate], {[K₂Sc₂(C₁₄H₁₀)₃(C₁₇H₁₃)₂(C₄H₈O)₄]·C₄H₈O}_n or [K(THF)₂]₂[(1,3-Ph₂C₅H₃)₂Sc₂(C₁₄H₁₀)₃]·THF, (6), and 1,4-diphenylcyclopenta-1,3-diene, C₁₇H₁₄, (3a), have been established. The [Sc(η⁶-C₂Ph₄)₂]^- complex anion in (1b) contains the tetraphenylethylene dianion in a symmetrical bis-η³-allyl coordination mode. The complex homoleptic [Sc(η⁶-C₂Ph₄)₂]^- anion retains its structure in THF solution, displaying hindered rotation of the coordinated phenyl rings. The 1D ¹H and ¹³C{¹H}, and 2D COSY ¹H-¹H and ¹³C-¹H NMR data are presented for M[Sc(Ph₄C₂)₂]·xTHF [M = Na and x = 4 for (1a); M = K and x = 3.5 for (2a)] in THF-d₈ media. Complex (5b) exhibits an unsymmetrical bis-η³-allyl coordination mode of the dianion, but this changes to a η⁴ coordination mode for (1,3-Ph₂C₅H₃)Sc(Ph₄C₂)(THF)₂, (5a), in THF-d₈ solution. A ⁴⁵Sc NMR study of (2a) and UV-Vis studies of (1a), (2a) and (5a) indicate a significant covalent contribution to the Sc-Ph₄C₂ bond character. The unique Sc ate complex, (6), contains three anthracenide dianions demonstrating both a η⁶-coordination mode for two bent ligands and a μ₂-η³:η³-bridging mode of a flat ligand. Each [(1,3-Ph₂C₅H₃)₂Sc₂(C₁₄H₁₀)₃]^2- dianionic unit is connected to four neighbouring units via short contacts with [K(THF)₂]⁺ cations, forming a two-dimensional coordination polymer framework parallel to (001).

AIE-Active Polyamide Containing Diphenylamine-TPE Moiety with Superior Electrofluorochromic Performance

Electrofluorochromism has attracted great attention due to the intelligence optoelectronic and sensing applications. The intrinsically switchable fluorophores with high solid-state fluorescence are regarded as key for ideal electrofluorochromic materials. Here, we reported an AIE-active polyamide with diphenylamine and tetraphenylethylene units, showing high fluorescence quantum yield up to 69.1% for the solid polymer film and stable electrochemical cycling stability. The polyamide exhibited reversible color and emission switching even in hundreds of cycles, and the fluorescence on/off contrast ratio was determined up to 417, which is the highest value to our knowledge. Furthermore, as the response time is vital for the real-life applications, to speed up the response of electrofluorochromism, a porous polymer film was readily prepared through a facile method, notably exhibiting high fluorescence contrast, long-term stability and obviously improved response, due to the sharply increased surface area. Therefore, the AIE-functionalization combining the porous structure strategy will synergistically and dramatically improve the electrofluorochromic performance, which will also promote their practical applications in the near future.

In Situ Monitoring of RAFT Polymerization by Tetraphenylethylene-Containing Agents with Aggregation-Induced Emission Characteristics

A facile and efficient approach is demonstrated to visualize the polymerization in situ. A group of tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-containing dithiocarbamates were synthesized and screened as agents for reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations. The spatial-temporal control characteristics of photochemistry enabled the RAFT polymerizations to be ON and OFF on demand under alternating visible light irradiation. The emission of TPE is sensitive to the local viscosity change owing to its aggregation-induced emission characteristic. Quantitative information could be easily acquired by the naked eye without destroying the reaction system. Furthermore, the versatility of such a technique was well demonstrated by 12 different polymerization systems. The present approach thus demonstrated a powerful platform for understanding the controlled living radical polymerization process.

Zincke's Salt-Substituted Tetraphenylethylenes for Fluorometric Turn-On Detection of Glutathione and Fluorescence Imaging of Cancer Cells

In this paper, we report Zincke's salt-substituted tetraphenylethylenes 1a and 1b with Cl^- and PF₆^- as counteranions, respectively. The crystal structure of 1b was determined. Both 1a and 1b are almost nonemissive even in the aggregated states. This is attributed to the photoinduced electron transfer from 2,2-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-phenylvinyl-phenyl unit to 1-(2,4-dinitrophenyl) pyridinium unit within 1a and 1b. The results demonstrate that the emissions of 1a and 1b in aqueous solution can be switched on upon either reaction with GSH or light irradiation. On the basis of the reaction between 1a and GSH, 1a can be utilized for the fluorescence turn-on detection of GSH selectively, and GSH with concentration as low as 36.9 nM can be detected. The transformation of 1b into 2 under light irradiation results in the fluorescence imaging of Hela and U2OS cells and phototoxicity toward Hela and U2OS cells after the protonation of pyridine unit in 2 because of the acidic environment of tumor cells. Aggregates of 1b can be up-taken by Hela and U2OS cells and fluorescence imaging has been successfully recorded with CLSM. Moreover, the protonated form of 2 can function as photosensitizer and 1b shows phototoxicity toward tumor cells such as Hela and U2OS cells.

Coordination-Enhanced Luminescence on Tetra-Phenylethylene-Based Supramolecular Assemblies

Materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties have received increased attention recently due to their potential applications in light-emitting devices, chemo/biosensors and biomedical diagnostics. In general, AIE requires the forced aggregation of the AIEgens induced by the poor solvent or close arrangement of AIEgens covalently attached to polymer chains. Here, we report two coordination-enhanced fluorescent supramolecular complexes featuring hierarchically restricted intramolecular motions via the self-assembly of tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based tetra-dentate (L^a) and bidentate (L^b) ligands and the cis-Pd(en)(NO₃)₂ (en = ethylenediamine) unit. While the free ligands are non-emissive in dilute solution and show typical AIE properties in both mixed solvent system and the solid state, the self-assembled complexes maintain their fluorescent nature in the solution state. In particular, the Pd₄(L^a)₂ complex shows remarkable 6-fold fluorescent enhancement over L^a in dilute solution. We anticipate that these kinds of coordination-enhanced emissive supramolecules will find applications in biomedical sensing or labeling.

Tuning the Solid State Emission of the Carbazole and Cyano-Substituted Tetraphenylethylene by Co-Crystallization with Solvents

Solid state emissive materials with high quantum yields and tunable emissions are desirable for various applications. A new TPE derivative (1) with two carbazole moieties and two cyano groups is reported, which shows typical aggregation induced emission behavior. Four crystals 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d are obtained after crystallization from N,N-dimethylformamid (DMF), trichloromethane (CHCl₃ ), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and dichloromethane (CH₂ Cl₂ ), respectively. Crystal structural analyses reveal that (i) molecules of 1 co-crystallize with DMF, CHCl₃ , THF, and CH₂ Cl₂ in 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d, respectively, and (ii) conformations of 1 are different within 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d, and compound 1 within crystal 1a adopts the most twisting conformation. Crystalline solids 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d exhibit high emission quantum yields up to 0.65, but their emission colors are varied from blue to green. In comparison, the amorphous solid of 1 is yellow-emissive with emission maximum at 542 nm. Moreover, the blue- or green-emissive crystalline solids and the yellow-emissive amorphous solid can be inter-converted by the grinding of crystalline solids and exposure of the amorphous solid to vapors of appropriate solvents. It is also demonstrated that microrods of 1a, 1b, and 1d show typical optical waveguiding behavior.

A New Tetraphenylethylene-Derived Fluorescent Probe for Nitroreductase Detection and Hypoxic-Tumor-Cell Imaging

The fluorescence detection of nitroreductase (NTR) and evaluation of the hypoxia status of tumor cells are vital, not only for clinical diagnoses and therapy, but also for biomedical research. Herein, we report the synthesis and application of a new fluorometric "turn-on" probe for the detection of NTR (TPE-NO₂ ) that takes advantage of the aggregation-induced emission of tetraphenylethylene. TPE-NO₂ can detect NTR at concentrations as low as 5 ng mL^-1 in aqueous solution. The detection mechanism relied on the aggregation and deaggregation of tetraphenylethylene molecules. Moreover, this fluorescent probe can be used to monitor the hypoxia status of tumor cells through the detection of endogenous NTR.

New Insight of Tetraphenylethylene-based Raman Signatures for Targeted SERS Nanoprobe Construction Toward Prostate Cancer Cell Detection

We have designed and synthesized novel tetraphenylethylene (TPE) appended organic fluorogens and unfold their unique Raman fingerprinting reflected by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) upon adsorption on nanoroughened gold surface as a new insight in addition to their prevalent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) phenomena. A series of five TPE analogues has been synthesized consisting of different electron donors such as (1) indoline with propyl (TPE-In), (2) indoline with lipoic acid (TPE-In-L), (3) indoline with Boc-protected propyl amine (TPE-In-Boc), (4) benzothaizole (TPE-B), and (5) quinaldine (TPE-Q). Interestingly, all five TPE analogues produced multiplexing Raman signal pattern, out of which TPE-In-Boc showed a significant increase in signal intensity in the fingerprint region. An efficient SERS nanoprobe has been constructed using gold nanoparticles as SERS substrate, and the TPE-In as the Raman reporter, which conjugated with a specific peptide substrate, Cys-Ser-Lys-Leu-Gln-OH, well-known for the recognition of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). The designated nanoprobe TPE-In-PSA@Au acted as SERS "ON/OFF" probe in peace with the vicinity of PSA protease, which distinctly recognizes PSA expression with a limit of detection of 0.5 ng in SERS platform. Furthermore, TPE-In-PSA@Au nanoprobe was efficiently recognized the overexpressed PSA in human LNCaP cells, which can be visualized through SERS spectral analysis and SERS mapping.

Light-Up Probes Based on Fluorogens with Aggregation-Induced Emission Characteristics for Monoamine Oxidase-A Activity Study in Solution and in Living Cells

Fluorogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) have emerged as a powerful and versatile platform for the development of novel biosensors. In this study, a series of water-soluble fluorescent probes based on tetraphenylethylene (TPE) were designed and synthesized for the detection of monoamine oxidases (MAOs) based on specific interactions between the probes and the proteins. Among the six probes developed, t-TPEM displays a significant fluorescence increase upon introduction of MAOs. Of particular significance is that the fluorescence of t-TPEM in the presence of MAO-A is 21-fold higher than other proteins including MAO-B. Lineweaver-Burk plots reveal that t-TPEM acts as an uncompetitive inhibitor of MAO-A with Ki = 17.1 μM, which confirms its good binding affinity toward MAO-A. Furthermore, a cell imaging experiment reveals that t-TPEM is able to selectively monitor the activity of MAO-A which is localized in mitochondria of MCF-7 cells.

Electrospun fibrous mats with conjugated tetraphenylethylene and mannose for sensitive turn-on fluorescent sensing of Escherichia coli

A rapid and sensitive detection of microbes in water and biological fluids is a key requirement in water and food safety, environmental monitoring, and clinical diagnosis and treatment. In the current study, electrospun polystyrene-co-maleic anhydride (PSMA) fibers with conjugated mannose and tetraphenylethylene (TPE) were developed for Escherichia coli (E. coli) detection, taking advantage of the high grafting capabilities of ultrafine fibers and the highly porous structure of the fibrous mat to entrap bacterial cells. The specific binding between mannose grafts on PSMA fibers and FimH proteins from the fimbriae of E. coli led to an efficient "turn-on" profile of TPE due to the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect. Poly(ethylene glycol) diamine was used as hydrophilic tethers to increase the conformational mobility of mannose grafts, indicating a more sensitive change in the fluorescence intensity against bacteria concentrations, a lower fluorescence background of fibers without bacteria incubation, and a sufficient space for bacteria binding, compared with the use of hexamethylenediamine or poly(ethylene imine) as spacers for mannose grafting. The addition of bovine serum albumin, glucose, or both of them into bacteria suspensions showed no significant changes in the fluorescence intensity of fibrous mats, indicating the anti-interference capability against these proteins and saccharides. An equation was drafted of the fluorescence intensities of fibrous mats against E. coli concentrations ranging from 10(2) to 10(5) CFU/mL. The test strip format was established on mannose-conjugated PSMA fibers after exposure to E. coli of different concentrations, providing a potential tool with a visual sensitivity of bacteria concentrations as low as 10(2) CFU/mL in a matter of minutes. This strategy may offer a capacity to be expanded to exploit electrospun fibrous mats and other carbohydrate-cell interactions for bioanalysis and biosensing of pathogenic bacteria.

A tetraphenylethylene core-based 3D structure small molecular acceptor enabling efficient non-fullerene organic solar cells

A tetraphenylethylene core-based small molecular acceptor with a unique 3D molecular structure is developed. Bulk-heterojunction blend films with a small feature size (≈20 nm) are obtained, which lead to non-fullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) with 5.5% power conversion efficiency. The work provides a new molecular design approach to efficient non-fullerene OSCs based on 3D-structured small-molecule acceptors.
