Pressure Processing of Nanocube Assemblies Toward Harvesting of a Metastable PbS Phase

Theoretical and Experimental Advances in High-Pressure Behaviors of Nanoparticles

Using compressive mechanical forces, such as pressure, to induce crystallographic phase transitions and mesostructural changes while modulating material properties in nanoparticles (NPs) is a unique way to discover new phase behaviors, create novel nanostructures, and study emerging properties that are difficult to achieve under conventional conditions. In recent decades, NPs of a plethora of chemical compositions, sizes, shapes, surface ligands, and self-assembled mesostructures have been studied under pressure by in-situ scattering and/or spectroscopy techniques. As a result, the fundamental knowledge of pressure-structure-property relationships has been significantly improved, leading to a better understanding of the design guidelines for nanomaterial synthesis. In the present review, we discuss experimental progress in NP high-pressure research conducted primarily over roughly the past four years on semiconductor NPs, metal and metal oxide NPs, and perovskite NPs. We focus on the pressure-induced behaviors of NPs at both the atomic- and mesoscales, inorganic NP property changes upon compression, and the structural and property transitions of perovskite NPs under pressure. We further discuss in depth progress on molecular modeling, including simulations of ligand behavior, phase-change chalcogenides, layered transition metal dichalcogenides, boron nitride, and inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites NPs. These models now provide both mechanistic explanations of experimental observations and predictive guidelines for future experimental design. We conclude with a summary and our insights on future directions for exploration of nanomaterial phase transition, coupling, growth, and nanoelectronic and photonic properties.

Pressure Regulating Self-Trapped States toward Remarkable Emission Enhancement of Zero-Dimensional Lead-Free Halides Nanocrystals

Copper(I)-based halides have recently attracted increasing attention as a substitute for lead halides, owing to their nontoxicity, abundance, unique structure, and optoelectric properties. However, exploring an effective strategy to further improve their optical activities and revealing structure-optical property relationships still remain a great concern. Here, by using high pressure technique, a remarkable enhancement of self-trapped exciton (STE) emission associated with the energy exchange between multiple self-trapped states in zero-dimensional lead-free halide Cs₃ Cu₂ I₅ NCs is successfully achieved. Furthermore, high-pressure processing endows the piezochromism of Cs₃ Cu₂ I₅ NCs by experiencing a white light and a strong purple light emission, which is able to be stabilized at near-ambient pressure. The distortion of [Cu₂ I₅ ] clusters composing of tetrahedral [CuI₄ ] and trigonal planar [CuI₃ ] and the decreased Cu-Cu distance between the adjacent Cu-I tetrahedron and triangle are responsible for the significant STEs emission enhancement under high pressure. The experiments combined with first-principles calculations not only shed light on the structure-optical property relationships of [Cu₂ I₅ ] clusters halide, but also provide guidance for improving emission intensity that is highly desirable in solid-state lighting applications.

Revealing the Mechanism of Pressure-Induced Emission in Layered Silver-Bismuth Double Perovskites

Pressure-induced emission (PIE) associated with self-trapping excitons (STEs) in low-dimensional halide perovskites has attracted great attention for better materials-by-design. Here, using 2D layered double perovskite (C₆ H₅ CH₂ CH₂ NH₃ ⁺ )₄ AgBiBr₈ as a model system, we advance a fundamental physicochemical mechanism of the PIE from the perspective of carrier dynamics and excited-state behaviors of local lattice distortion. We observed a pressure-driven STE transformation from dark to bright states, corresponding a strong broadband Stokes-shifted emission. Further theoretical analysis demonstrated that the suppressed lattice distortion and enhanced electronic dimensionality in the excited-state play an important role in the formation of stabilized bright STEs, which could manipulate the self-trapping energy and lattice deformation energy to form an energy barrier between the potential energy curves of ground- and excited-state, and enhance the electron-hole orbital overlap, respectively.

Harvesting PdH Employing Pd Nano Icosahedrons via High Pressure

Palladium hydrides (PdH_x ) have important applications in hydrogen storage, catalysis, and superconductivity. Because of the unique electron subshell structure of Pd, quenching PdH_x materials with more than 0.706 hydrogen stoichiometry remains challenging. Here, the 1:1 stoichiometric PdH ( F m 3 ¯ m ) $Fm\bar{3}m)$ is successfully synthesized using Pd nano icosahedrons as a starting material via high-pressure cold-forging at 0.2 GPa. The synthetic initial pressure is reduced by at least one order of magnitude relative to the bulk Pd precursors. Furthermore, PdH is quenched at ambient conditions after being laser heated ≈2000 K under ≈30 GPa. Corresponding ab initio calculations demonstrate that the high potential barrier of the facets (111) restricts hydrogen atoms' diffusion, preventing hydrogen atoms from combining to generate H₂ . This study paves the way for the high-pressure synthesis of metal hydrides with promising potential applications.

Pressure Engineering Promising Transparent Oxides with Large Conductivity Enhancement and Strong Thermal Stability

Transparent conducting oxides (TCO) with high electrical conductivity and high visible light transparency are desired for a wide range of high-impact engineering. Yet, usually, a compromise must be made between conductivity and transparency, limiting the practical application of a TCO to the next level. Furthermore, TCO performance is highly sensitive to composition, so conventional synthesis methods, such as chemical doping, cannot unravel the mysteries of the quantitative structure-performance relationship. Thus, improving the fundamental understanding or creating materials-by-design has limited success. Here, a strategy is proposed to modulate the lattice and electronic and optical properties precisely by applying pressure on a TCO. Strikingly, after compression-decompression treatment on the indium titanium oxides (ITiO), a highly transparent and metastable phase with two orders of magnitude enhancement in conductivity is synthesized from an irreversible phase transition. Moreover, this phase possesses previously unattainable filter efficiency on hazardous blue light up to 600 °C, providing potential for healthcare-related applications with strong thermal stability up to 200 °C. These results demonstrate that pressure engineering is a clean and effective tool for tailoring functional materials that are not achievable by other means, providing an exciting alternative property-tuning dimension in materials science.

Nanocrystals with metastable high-pressure phases under ambient conditions

The ambient metastability of the rock-salt phase in well-defined model systems comprising nanospheres or nanorods of cadmium selenide, cadmium sulfide, or both was investigated as a function of composition, initial crystal phase, particle structure, shape, surface functionalization, and ordering level of their assemblies. Our experiments show that these nanocrystal systems exhibit ligand-tailorable reversibility in the rock salt-to-zinc blende solid-phase transformation. Interparticle sintering was used to engineer kinetic barriers in the phase transformation to produce ambient-pressure metastable rock-salt structures in a controllable manner. Interconnected nanocrystal networks were identified as an essential structure that hosted metastable high-energy phases at ambient conditions. These findings suggest general rules for transformation-barrier engineering that are useful in the rational design of next-generation materials.

Pressure-stimulus-responsive behaviors of core-shell InP/ZnSe nanocrystals: remarkable piezochromic luminescence and structural assembly

Piezochromic luminescence materials with optical properties can be adjusted (the colors most sensitive to the human eye range from red to green) to provide powerful means for information acquisition in various applications. Inorganic quantum dots, typically based on heavy metals such as cadmium and lead, have congenital advantages as luminescence materials, including strong inoxidizability and excellent photoelectric properties. However, small band-gap shifts under pressure have hindered the development of inorganic-based piezochromic materials. Herein, we combined in situ high-pressure photoluminescence (PL) and absorption measurements with synchrotron X-ray scattering spectra to elucidate the remarkable modulation of optical properties and morphologies by pressure, particularly that of the piezochromic luminescence, in all-inorganic core-shell InP/ZnSe nanocrystals (NCs). We observed a stepwise PL color change from red to green, and an ultrabroad bandgap tunability of 0.46 eV was observed from 1.99 to 2.45 eV in the pressure range of 14.2 GPa for InP/ZnSe NCs. Moreover, two-dimensional (2D) InP/ZnSe nanosheets were synthesized by the stress-driven attachment of nanoparticles. These results demonstrate the ability of the pressure-stimulus response to trigger remarkable piezochromic luminescence and 2D nanosheet assembly in InP/ZnSe NCs, which paves the way for new applications of all-inorganic InP-based semiconductor NCs.

Self-trapped exciton emission and piezochromism in conventional 3D lead bromide perovskite nanocrystals under high pressure

Developing single-component materials with bright-white emission is required for energy-saving applications. Self-trapped exciton (STE) emission is regarded as a robust way to generate intrinsic white light in halide perovskites. However, STE emission usually occurs in low-dimensional perovskites whereby a lower level of structural connectivity reduces the conductivity. Enabling conventional three-dimensional (3D) perovskites to produce STEs to elicit competitive white emission is challenging. Here, we first achieved STEs-related emission of white light with outstanding chromaticity coordinates of (0.330, 0.325) in typical 3D perovskites, Mn-doped CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs), through pressure processing. Remarkable piezochromism from red to blue was also realized in compressed Mn-doped CsPbBr3 NCs. Doping engineering by size-mismatched Mn dopants could give rise to the formation of localized carriers. Hence, high pressure could further induce octahedra distortion to accommodate the STEs, which has never occurred in pure 3D perovskites. Our study not only offers deep insights into the photophysical nature of perovskites, it also provides a promising strategy towards high-quality, stable white-light emission.

Pressure-Driven Reverse Intersystem Crossing: New Path toward Bright Deep-Blue Emission of Lead-Free Halide Double Perovskites

Maximizing the regeneration of singlet excitons remains a considerable challenge in deep-blue emission systems to obtain low-cost, high-efficiency fluorescent materials. However, the formation of the long-lifetime triplet excitons generally dominates the radiative process, making it greatly difficult to harvest deep-blue emission with high color purity because of the depression of singlet excitons. Here, a very bright deep-blue emission in double perovskite Cs₂Na_0.4Ag_0.6InCl₆ alloyed with Bi doping (CNAICB) was successfully achieved by pressure-driven reverse intersystem crossing (RISC), an abnormal photophysical process of energy transfer from the excited triplet state back to the singlet. Therein, the inherently broad emission of CNAICB was associated with the self-trapped excitons (STEs) at excited triplet states, whereas the radiative recombination of STEs populated in excited singlet states was responsible for the observed deep-blue emission. Moreover, the deep-blue emission corresponds to Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates (0.16, 0.06) at 5.01 GPa, which meets the requirement of Rec. 2020 display standards. Likewise, pressure was introduced as an efficient tool to rule out the possibility of the recombination of free excitons and clarify the long-standing conventional dispute over the origin of the low-wavelength emission of Cs₂AgInCl₆. Our study not only demonstrates that pressure can be a robust means to boost the deep-blue emission but also provides deep insights into the structure-property relationship of lead-free CNAICB double perovskites.

Monolayer Amorphous Carbon-Bridged Nanosheet Mesocrystal: Facile Preparation, Morphosynthetic Transformation, and Energy Storage Applications

Self-assembly of nanoscale building units into mesoscopically ordered superstructures opens the possibility for tailored applications. Nonetheless, the realization of precise controllability related specifically to the atomic scale has been challenging. Here, first, we explore the key role of a molecular surfactant in adjusting the growth kinetics of two-dimensional (2D) layered SnS₂. Experimentally, we show that high pressure both enhances the adsorption energy of the surfactant sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) on the SnS₂(001) surface at the initial nucleation stage and induces the subsequent oriented attachment (OA) growth of 2D crystallites with monolayer thickness, leading to the formation of a monolayer amorphous carbon-bridged nanosheet mesocrystal. It is notable that such a nanosheet-coalesced mesocrystal is metastable with a flowerlike morphology and can be turned into a single crystal via crystallographic fusion. Subsequently, direct encapsulation of the mesocrystal via FeCl₃-induced pyrrole monomer self-polymerization generates conformal polypyrrole (PPy) coating, and carbonization of the resulting nanocomposites generates Fe-N-S-co-doped carbons that are embedded with well-dispersed SnS/FeCl₃ quantum sheets; this process skillfully integrated structural phase transformation, pyrolysis graphitization, and self-doping. Interestingly, such an integrated design not only guarantees the flowerlike morphology of the final nanohybrids but also, more importantly, allows the thickness of petalous carbon and the size of the nanoconfined particles to be controlled. Benefiting from the unique structural features, the resultant nanohybrids exhibited the brilliant electrochemical performance while simultaneously acting as a reliable platform for exploring the structure-performance correlation of a Li-ion battery (LIB).

Regulating off-centering distortion maximizes photoluminescence in halide perovskites

Metal halide perovskites possess unique atomic and electronic configurations that endow them with high defect tolerance and enable high-performance photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Perovskite light-emitting diodes have achieved an external quantum efficiency of over 20%. Despite tremendous progress, fundamental questions remain, such as how structural distortion affects the optical properties. Addressing their relationships is considerably challenging due to the scarcity of effective diagnostic tools during structural and property tuning as well as the limited tunability achievable by conventional methods. Here, using pressure and chemical methods to regulate the metal off-centering distortion, we demonstrate the giant tunability of photoluminescence (PL) in both the intensity (>20 times) and wavelength (>180 nm/GPa) in the highly distorted halide perovskites [CH₃NH₃GeI₃, HC(NH₂)₂GeI₃, and CsGeI₃]. Using advanced in situ high-pressure probes and first-principles calculations, we quantitatively reveal a universal relationship whereby regulating the level of off-centering distortion towards 0.2 leads to the best PL performance in the halide perovskites. By applying this principle, intense PL can still be induced by substituting CH₃NH₃⁺ with Cs⁺ to control the distortion in (CH₃NH₃)_1-xCs_xGeI₃, where the chemical substitution plays a similar role as external pressure. The compression of a fully substituted sample of CsGeI₃ further tunes the distortion to the optimal value at 0.7 GPa, which maximizes the emission with a 10-fold enhancement. This work not only demonstrates a quantitative relationship between structural distortion and PL property of the halide perovskites but also illustrates the use of knowledge gained from high-pressure research to achieve the desired properties by ambient methods.

Supercrystallography-Based Decoding of Structure and Driving Force of Nanocrystal Assembly

Nanocrystal (NC) assembly appears as one promising method towards the controllable design and fabrication of advanced materials with desired property and functionality. The achievement of a “materials-by-design” requires not only a primary structural decoding of NC assembled supercrystal at a wide range of length scales, but also an improved understanding of the interactions and changeable roles of various driving forces over the course of nucleation and growth of NC superlattice. The recent invention of a synchrotron-based X-ray supercrystallographic approach makes it feasible to uncover the structural details of NC-assembled supercrystal at unprecedented levels from atomic through nano to mesoscale. Such structural documentations can be used to trace how various driving forces interact in a competitive way and thus change relatively in strength to govern the formation of individual superlattices under certain circumstances. This short review makes use of four single supercrystals typically made up of spherical, truncate, cubic and octahedral NCs, respectively, and provides a comparable description and a reasonable analysis of the use of a synchrotron-based supercrystallographic approach to reveal various degrees of translational and orientational ordering of NCs within various superlattices. In the connection of observed structural aspects with controlled environments of NC assembly, we further address how various driving forces interact each other to develop relatively changeable roles upon variation of the NC shape to respond to the nucleation and growth of various superlattices. With the guidance of such gained insights, we provide additional examples to illustrate how realistic environments are designed into delicate control of NC assembly to achieve particular interactions between NCs towards harvesting superlattice with NC translational symmetry and atomically crystallographic orientation as desired.

Large Band Gap Narrowing and Prolonged Carrier Lifetime of (C4H9NH3)2PbI4 under High Pressure

Due to their superior optical and electronic properties and good stability, 2D organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) exhibit strong potential for optoelectronic applications. However, the large band gap, short carrier lifetime, and high resistance hinder their practical performance. In this work, the band gap is successfully tuned, the carrier lifetime is prolonged, and the resistance of (C4H9NH3)2PbI4 (BA2PbI4) is reduced directly using high pressure. The band gap is decreased to less than 1 eV at 35.0 GPa, and the highest pressure is studied. The carrier lifetime at 9.9 GPa is 20 times longer than that at ambient conditions. Moreover, the resistance is reduced by four orders of magnitude at 34.0 GPa accompanying band gap narrowing. This work indicates that pressure plays an effective role in tuning the optical and electronic structures of BA2PbI4, and also provides a strategy to synthesize high-performance OIHP materials.

Tunable photoluminescence and an enhanced photoelectric response of Mn2+-doped CsPbCl3 perovskite nanocrystals via pressure-induced structure evolution

Mn²⁺:CsPbCl₃ nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized using a modified one-pot injection method, which exhibits significantly improved thermal stability. For the first time, the pressure-treated optical and structural properties of synthetic Mn²⁺:CsPbCl₃ NCs were further investigated, and their associated intriguing electrical and photoelectric properties were revealed from impedance spectra and photocurrent measurements under compression. The pressure-dependent photoluminescence experienced an initial redshift before 1.7 GPa followed by a continuous blueshift, as evidenced by the bandgap shifts. High-pressure XRD spectra uncovered a cubic-to-orthorhombic structural transition at about 1.1 GPa and subsequent amorphization upon further compression, which was fully reversible. Furthermore, the sample annealing from 340 K drove grain growth and decreased grain boundary resistance at ambient pressure. The compression further decreased the grain boundary barrier and improved the electrical conductivity (up to ∼10^-2Ω^-1 cm^-1) of the thermally annealed Mn²⁺:CsPbCl₃ NC surface. Simultaneous photocurrent enhancement of thermally annealed NCs was also achieved as expected, and reached optimal performance at 0.7 GPa. Strikingly, after the pressure cycling (loading-releasing), the results show that thermally annealed Mn²⁺:CsPbCl₃ NCs gained preservable higher electrical conductivity (∼10 times increase) and an improved photoelectric response compared to the ambient state before compression. This work proves that high pressure is useful for opening the versatility in the structure and properties of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals leading to a promising way for superior optoelectronic materials-by-design.

Ligand dynamics control structure, elasticity, and high-pressure behavior of nanoparticle superlattices

Precise engineering of nanoparticle superlattices (NPSLs) for energy applications requires a molecular-level understanding of the physical factors governing their morphology, periodicity, mechanics, and response to external stimuli. Such knowledge, particularly the impact of ligand dynamics on physical behavior of NPSLs, is still in its infancy. Here, we combine coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, and small angle X-ray scattering experiments in a diamond anvil cell to demonstrate that coverage density of capping ligands (i.e., number of ligands per unit area of a nanoparticle's surface), strongly influences the structure, elasticity, and high-pressure behavior of NPSLs using face-centered cubic PbS-NPSLs as a representative example. We demonstrate that ligand coverage density dictates (a) the extent of diffusion of ligands over NP surfaces, (b) spatial distribution of the ligands in the interstitial spaces between neighboring NPs, and (c) the fraction of ligands that interdigitate across different nanoparticles. We find that below a critical coverage density (1.8 nm-2 for 7 nm PbS NPs capped with oleic acid), NPSLs collapse to form disordered aggregates via sintering, even under ambient conditions. Above the threshold ligand coverage density, NPSLs surprisingly preserve their crystalline order even under high applied pressures (∼40-55 GPa), and show a completely reversible pressure behavior. This opens the possibility of reversibly manipulating lattice spacing of NPSLs, and in turn, finely tuning their collective electronic, optical, thermo-mechanical, and magnetic properties.

Pressure Induced Nanoparticle Phase Behavior, Property, and Applications

Nanoparticle (NP) high pressure behavior has been extensively studied over the years. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the studies of pressure induced NP phase behavior, property, and applications. This review starts with a brief overview of high pressure characterization techniques, coupled with synchrotron X-ray scattering, Raman, fluorescence, and absorption. Then, we survey the pressure induced phase transition of NP atomic crystal structure including size dependent phase transition, amorphization, and threshold pressures using several typical NP material systems as examples. Next, we discuss the pressure induced phase transition of NP mesoscale structures including topics on pressure induced interparticle separation distance, NP coupling, and NP coalescence. Pressure induced new properties and applications in different NP systems are highlighted. Finally, outlooks with future directions are discussed.

Pressure-Induced Emission (PIE) of One-Dimensional Organic Tin Bromide Perovskites

Low-dimensional halide perovskites easily suffer from the structural distortion related to significant quantum confinement effects. Organic tin bromide perovskite C₄N₂H₁₄SnBr₄ is a unique one-dimensional (1D) structure in which the edge sharing octahedral tin bromide chains [SnBr₄^2-]_∞ are embraced by the organic cations C₄N₂H₁₄²⁺ to form the bulk assembly of core-shell quantum wires. Some unusual phenomena under high pressure are accordingly expected. Here, an intriguing pressure-induced emission (PIE) in C₄N₂H₁₄SnBr₄ was successfully achieved by means of a diamond anvil cell. The observed PIE is greatly associated with the large distortion of [SnBr₆]^4- octahedral motifs resulting from a structural phase transition, which can be corroborated by in situ high-pressure photoluminescence, absorption, and angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction spectra. The distorted [SnBr₆]^4- octahedra would accordingly facilitate the radiative recombination of self-trapped excitons (STEs) by lifting the activation energy of detrapping of self-trapped states. First-principles calculations indicate that the enhanced transition dipole moment and the increased binding energy of STEs are highly responsible for the remarkable PIE. This work will improve the potential applications in the fields of pressure sensors, trademark security, and information storage.

Lighting Up the Invisible Twisted Intramolecular Charge Transfer State by High Pressure

The twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state plays an important role in determining the performance of optoelectronic devices. However, for some nonfluorescent TICT molecules, the "invisible" TICT state could only be visualized by modifying the molecular structure. Here, we introduce a new facile pressure-induced approach to light up the TICT state through the use of a pressure-related liquid-solid phase transition of the surrounding solvent. Combining ultrafast spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations, it reveals that the "invisible" TICT state can emit fluorescence when the rotation of a donor group is restricted by the frozen acetonitrile solution. Furthermore, the TICT process can even be effectively regulated by the external pressure. Our study offers a unique strategy to achieve dual fluorescence behavior in charge transfer molecules and is of significance for optoelectronic and biomedical applications.

Effect of the Inherent Structure of Rh Nanocrystals on the Hydriding Behavior under Pressure

Tailoring the inherent structure of materials is an effective way to improve the hydrogen storage capacity of metal materials. In this work, we report the effect of rhodium (Rh) nanocrystals (NCs) on the hydrogenation reaction. We found that Rh NCs could form rhodium monohydride (RhH) at a lower pressure than the bulk Rh because of its high specific surface area and structure defects. In addition, Rh NCs in the form of icosahedrons exhibited a much higher hydrogen absorption efficiency than Rh nanocubes. Furthermore, much smaller irregular Rh nanoparticles are even partially converted to RhH at lower pressure because of the nanosize effect. We thus believe that it is possible to design materials with excellent hydrogen storage properties under mild conditions.

Understanding Fe3O4 Nanocube Assembly with Reconstruction of a Consistent Superlattice Phase Diagram

Nanocube (NC) assemblies display complex superlattice behaviors, which require a systematic understanding of their nucleation and growth as well transformation toward construction of a consistent superlattice phase diagram. This work made use of Fe₃O₄ NCs with controlled environments, and assembled NCs into three-dimensional (3D) superlattices of simple cubic (sc), body-centered cubic (bcc), and face-centered cubic (fcc), acute and obtuse rhombohedral (rh) polymorphs, and 2D superlattices of square and hexagon. Controlled experiments and computations of in situ and static small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) as well as electron microscopic imaging revealed that the fcc and bcc polymorphs preferred a primary nucleation at the early stage of NC assembly, which started from the high packing planes of fcc(111) and bcc(110), respectively, in both 3D and 2D cases. Upon continuous growth of superlattice grain (or domain), a confinement stress appeared and distorted fcc and bcc into acute and obtuse rh polymorphs, respectively. The variable magnitudes of competitive interactions between configurational and directional entropy determine the primary superlattice polymorph of either fcc or bcc, while emergent enhancement of confinement effect on enlarged grains attributes to late developed superlattice transformations. Differently, the formation of a sc polymorph requires a strong driving force that either emerges simultaneously or is applied externally so that one easy case of the sc formation can be achieved in 2D thin films. Unlike the traditional Bath deformation pathway that involves an intermediate body-centered tetragonal lattice, the observed superlattice transformations in NC assembly underwent a simple rhombohedral distortion, which was driven by a growth-induced in-plane compressive stress. Establishment of a consistent phase diagram of NC-based superlattices and reconstruction of their assembly pathways provide critical insight and a solid base for controlled design and scalable fabrication of nanocube-based functional materials with desired superlattices and collective properties for real-world applications.

Surfactant-Assisted Cooperative Self-Assembly of Nanoparticles into Active Nanostructures

Nanoparticles (NPs) of controlled size, shape, and composition are important building blocks for the next generation of devices. There are numerous recent examples of organizing uniformly sized NPs into ordered arrays or superstructures in processes such as solvent evaporation, heterogeneous solution assembly, Langmuir-Blodgett receptor-ligand interactions, and layer-by-layer assembly. This review summarizes recent progress in the development of surfactant-assisted cooperative self-assembly method using amphiphilic surfactants and NPs to synthesize new classes of highly ordered active nanostructures. Driven by cooperative interparticle interactions, surfactant-assisted NP nucleation and growth results in optically and electrically active nanomaterials with hierarchical structure and function. How the approach works with nanoscale materials of different dimensions into active nanostructures is discussed in details. Some applications of these self-assembled nanostructures in the areas of nanoelectronics, photocatalysis, and biomedicine are highlighted. Finally, we conclude with the current research progress and perspectives on the challenges and some future directions.

A Metastable Crystalline Phase in Two-Dimensional Metallic Oxide Nanoplates

A simple method was adopted in which ultrathin cerium oxide nanoplates (<1.4 nm) were synthesized to increase the surface atomic content, allowing transformation from a face-centered cubic (fcc) phase to a body-centered tetragonal (bct) phase. Three types of cerium oxide nanoparticles of different thicknesses (1.2 nm ultrathin nanoplates, 2.2 nm nanoplates, and 5.4 nm nanocubes) were examined using transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The metastable bct phase was observed only in ultrathin nanoplates. Thermodynamic energy analysis confirmed that the surface energy of the ultrathin nanoplates is the cause of the remarkable stabilization of the metastable bct phase. The mechanism of surface energy regulation can be expanded to other metallic oxides, thus providing a new means for manipulating and stabilizing novel materials under ambient conditions that otherwise would not be recovered.

Pressure-induced emission of cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are of great interest for optoelectronics because of their high quantum efficiency in solar cells and light-emitting devices. However, exploring an effective strategy to further improve their optical activities remains a considerable challenge. Here, we report that nanocrystals (NCs) of the initially nonfluorescent zero-dimensional (0D) cesium lead halide perovskite Cs₄PbBr₆ exhibit a distinct emission under a high pressure of 3.01 GPa. Subsequently, the emission intensity of Cs₄PbBr₆ NCs experiences a significant increase upon further compression. Joint experimental and theoretical analyses indicate that such pressure-induced emission (PIE) may be ascribed to the enhanced optical activity and the increased binding energy of self-trapped excitons upon compression. This phenomenon is a result of the large distortion of [PbBr₆]^4- octahedral motifs resulting from a structural phase transition. Our findings demonstrate that high pressure can be a robust tool to boost the photoluminescence efficiency and provide insights into the relationship between the structure and optical properties of 0D MHPs under extreme conditions.

Pressure-Induced Large Emission Enhancements of Cadmium Selenide Nanocrystals

Pressure quenching of optical emission largely limits the potential application of many materials in optical pressure-sensing devices, since emission intensity is crucially connected to performance. Boosting visible-light emission at high pressure is, therefore, an important goal. Here, we demonstrate that the emission of CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) can be enhanced by more than an order of magnitude by compression. The brightest emission can be achieved at pressures corresponding to the phase transitions in different sized CdSe NCs. Very bright blue emission can be obtained by exploiting the increase in band gap with increasing pressure. First-principles calculations indicate that the interaction between the capping oleic acid (OA) layer and the CdSe core is strengthened with increased Hirshfeld charge at high pressure. The effective surface reconstruction associated with the removal of surface-related trap states is highly responsible for the pressure-induced emission enhancement of these CdSe NCs. These findings pave the way for designing a stress nanogauge with easy optical readout and provide a route for tuning bright-fluorescence imaging in response to an externally applied pressure.

Pressure-Induced Phase Transformation and Band-Gap Engineering of Formamidinium Lead Iodide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Formamidinium lead halide (FAPbX₃, X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite materials have recently drawn an increased amount of attention owing to their superior optoelectronic properties and enhanced material stability as compared with their methylammonium-based (MA-based) analogues. Herein, we report a study of the pressure-induced structural and optical evolutions of FAPbI₃ hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) using a synchrotron-based X-ray scattering technique coupled to in situ absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies. As a result of their unique structural stability and soft nature, FAPbI₃ NCs exhibit a wide range of band-gap tunability (1.44-2.17 eV) as a function of pressure (0-13.4 GPa). The study presented here not only provides an efficient and chemically orthogonal means to controllably engineer the band gap of FAPbI₃ NCs using pressure but more importantly sheds light on how to strategically design the band gaps of FA-based hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites for various optoelectronic applications.

Interplay between spherical confinement and particle shape on the self-assembly of rounded cubes

Self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) inside drying emulsion droplets provides a general strategy for hierarchical structuring of matter at different length scales. The local orientation of neighboring crystalline NPs can be crucial to optimize for instance the optical and electronic properties of the self-assembled superstructures. By integrating experiments and computer simulations, we demonstrate that the orientational correlations of cubic NPs inside drying emulsion droplets are significantly determined by their flat faces. We analyze the rich interplay of positional and orientational order as the particle shape changes from a sharp cube to a rounded cube. Sharp cubes strongly align to form simple-cubic superstructures whereas rounded cubes assemble into icosahedral clusters with additionally strong local orientational correlations. This demonstrates that the interplay between packing, confinement and shape can be utilized to develop new materials with novel properties.

Colloidal nanoparticles self-assembled under spherical confinement can form a rich variety of structures. Here, the authors study the self-assembly of sharp and rounded nanocubes under such confinement, revealing the influence of particle and face geometry on positional and orientational behavior.

A new view for nanoparticle assemblies: from crystalline to binary cooperative complementarity

Studies on nanoparticle assemblies and their applications have been research frontiers in nanoscience in the past few decades and remarkable progress has been made in the synthetic strategies and techniques. Recently, the design and fabrication of the nanoparticle-based nanomaterials or nanodevices with integrated and enhanced properties compared to those of the individual components have gradually become the mainstream. However, a systematic solution to provide a big picture for future development and guide the investigation of different aspects of the study of nanoparticle assemblies remains a challenge. The binary cooperative complementary principle could be an answer. The binary cooperative complementary principle is a universal discipline and can describe the fundamental properties of matter from the subatomic particles to the universe. According to its definition, a variety of nanoparticle assemblies, which represent the cutting-edge work in the nanoparticle studies, are naturally binary cooperative complementary materials. Therefore, the introduction of the binary cooperative complementary principle in the studies of nanoparticle assemblies could provide a unique perspective for reviewing this field and help in the design and fabrication of novel functional nanoparticle assemblies.

High-Pressure-Induced Comminution and Recrystallization of CH3 NH3 PbBr3 Nanocrystals as Large Thin Nanoplates

High pressure (HP) can drive the direct sintering of nanoparticle assemblies for Ag/Au, CdSe/PbS nanocrystals (NCs). Instead of direct sintering for the conventional nanocrystals, this study experimentally observes for the first time high-pressure-induced comminution and recrystallization of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite nanocrystals into highly luminescent nanoplates with a shorter carrier lifetime. Such novel pressure response is attributed to the unique structural nature of hybrid perovskites under high pressure: during the drastic cubic-orthorhombic structural transformation at ≈2 GPa, (301) the crystal plane fully occupied by organic molecules possesses a higher surface energy, triggering the comminution of nanocrystals into nanoslices along such crystal plane. Beyond bulk perovskites, in which pressure-induced modifications on crystal structures and functional properties will disappear after pressure release, the pressure-formed variants, i.e., large (≈100 nm) and thin (<10 nm) perovskite nanoplates, are retained and these exhibit simultaneous photoluminescence emission enhancing (a 15-fold enhancement in the photoluminescence) and carrier lifetime shortening (from ≈18.3 ± 0.8 to ≈7.6 ± 0.5 ns) after releasing of pressure from 11 GPa. This pressure-induced comminution of hybrid perovskite NCs and a subsequent amorphization-recrystallization treatment offer the possibilities of engineering the advanced hybrid perovskites with specific properties.

Pressure-Enabled Synthesis of Hetero-Dimers and Hetero-Rods through Intraparticle Coalescence and Interparticle Fusion of Quantum-Dot-Au Satellite Nanocrystals

This report presents the fabrication and pressure-driven processing of heterostructural nanocrystal superlattices (HNC-SLs) self-assembled from quantum-dot-Au (QD-Au) satellite-type HNCs. In situ small/wide-angle X-ray scattering and electron microscopic measurements showed that the HNC-SLs underwent structural transformation at both atomic- and mesoscales during the pressure processing. Upon deviatoric stress-driven orientational migration, the intraparticle coalescence of Au satellites at QD surfaces transforms individual HNCs into heterodimers, whereas the interparticle fusion drives assembled HNCs into ordered heterorod arrays. These results demonstrate high-pressure-processing as a clean and fast means for conversion of HNCs into novel heteromaterials that are difficult to achieve through conventional synthetic routes.

Nanocube Superlattices of Cesium Lead Bromide Perovskites and Pressure-Induced Phase Transformations at Atomic and Mesoscale Levels

Lead halide perovskites are promising materials for a range of applications owing to their unique crystal structure and optoelectronic properties. Understanding the relationship between the atomic/mesostructures and the associated properties of perovskite materials is crucial to their application performances. Herein, the detailed pressure processing of CsPbBr₃ perovskite nanocube superlattices (NC-SLs) is reported for the first time. By using in situ synchrotron-based small/wide angle X-ray scattering and photoluminescence (PL) probes, the NC-SL structural transformations are correlated at both atomic and mesoscale levels with the band-gap evolution through a pressure cycle of 0 ↔ 17.5 GPa. After the pressurization, the individual CsPbBr₃ NCs fuse into 2D nanoplatelets (NPLs) with a uniform thickness. The pressure-synthesized perovskite NPLs exhibit a single cubic crystal structure, a 1.6-fold enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield, and a longer emission lifetime than the starting NCs. This study demonstrates that pressure processing can serve as a novel approach for the rapid conversion of lead halide perovskites into structures with enhanced properties.

Entropy-Driven Pt3Co Nanocube Assembles and Thermally Mediated Electrical Conductivity with Anisotropic Variation of the Rhombohedral Superlattice

Understanding the shape-dependent superlattices and resultant anisotropies of both structure and property allows for rational design of materials processing and engineering to fabricate transformative materials with useful properties for applications. This work shows the structural evolution from square lattice of two-dimensional (2D) thin film to rhombic lattice of large three-dimensional (3D) assembles of Pt₃Co nanocubes (NCs). Synchrotron-based X-ray supercrystallography determines the superlattice of large 3D supercrystal into an obtuse rhombohedral (Rh) symmetry, which holds a long-range coherence of both NC translation and atomic crystallographic orientation. The Rh superlattice has a trigonal cell angle of 104°, and the constitute NCs orient their atomic Pt₃Co(111) planes to the superlattice Rh[111] direction. The temperature-dependent in situ small and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) measurements reveal a thermally induced superlattice contraction of supercrystal, which maintains translational ordering but slightly develops orientational disordering. The observed increases of both the packing density and the rotation magnitude of NCs indicate a rational compromise between configurational and rotational entropies of NCs. The resultant minimization of the total free energy is responsible for the formation and stability of the obtuse Rh superlattice. The temperature-dependent in situ measurements of SAXS and electrical resistance reveal that, in conjunction with the thermally induced sharp contraction of superlattice at 160 °C, the supercrystal becomes measurable of electrical resistance, which was followed by a temperature-dependent linear increase. Upon rapid annealing from 250 °C, the supercrystal remains almost constant in both structure and electrical resistance. The heating-enabled electrical conductivity of the supercrystal at high temperature implies the formation of a NC-interconnected architecture. The experiments and overall analysis provide solid evidence and essential information for the use of shape-dependent structural anisotropies of supercrystal to create nanobased novel architecture with desired properties.

Multi-component superstructures self-assembled from nanocrystal building blocks

More than three decades of intensive study to make high-quality nanocrystals have created a unique toolbox for building multi-component superstructures, which have been recognized as a new generation of metamaterials important to both fundamental sciences and applied technologies. This minireview summarizes recent advances in this exciting field. We will focus our discussion on the synthetic strategies and superstructures of this multi-component metamaterial, and highlight their novel properties and potential applications. Additionally, some perspectives on possible developments in this field are offered at the end of this review. We hope that this minireview will both inform and stimulate research interests for the design and fabrication of these nanocrystal-based multi-component metamaterials for diverse applications in the future.

Competing Interactions between Various Entropic Forces toward Assembly of Pt3Ni Octahedra into a Body-Centered Cubic Superlattice

Anisotropic nanocrystal assembled supercrystals with open superlattices (SLs) manifest novel and unique properties, but poor understanding of the nucleation/growth mechanisms limits their design and fabrication for practical applications. Using highly anisotropic Pt3Ni octahedral nanocrystals, we have grown large single supercrystals with an open body-centered cubic (bcc) superlattice that has a low filling factor of 26.8%. Synchrotron-based X-ray structural reconstruction fully revealed the coherence of translational and orientational orderings and determined that the constituent octahedra arrange themselves with the vertex-to-vertex and face-to-face configurations along the SL[100] and SL[111] directions, respectively. The large face-to-face separation and flexible vertex-to-vertex elastic contact provided the rattle space and supporting axis for local rotations of Pt3Ni octahedra within the bcc superlattice. Development of orientational disordering along with robust preservation of translational ordering during the heating process of a supercrystal in the oleic acid wetting environment confirmed the dominance of rotational entropy of hard octahedra in the formation of the open bcc superlattice. Ultimate achievement of dynamic equilibrium between the vertex-oriented elastic repulsions and the face-oriented attractions of surface-coating ligands governs the structural and mechanical stability of the supercrystal. This discovery provides significant insights into the design and control of geometrical shapes for the fabrication of highly anisotropic nanocrystals into desired open superlattices with tailored optical and electronic properties.

Structural evolution and mechanical behaviour of Pt nanoparticle superlattices at high pressure

High pressure is an effective means for tuning the interparticle distances of nanoparticle (NP) superlattices and thus for modifying their physical properties and functionalities. In this work, we determined the evolution of inter-NP distances of a Pt NP superlattice with increasing pressure using an in situ synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique in a diamond-anvil cell (DAC). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to characterize the microstructures of pre- and post-compression samples. Our results demonstrate that the evolution of Pt NP assemblies with increasing pressure consists of four stages: (1) ligand elastic response, (2) uniform compression, (3) ligand detachment from NP surfaces, and (4) deviatoric compression of ligands between neighboring NPs. By controlling the magnitudes of applied pressure and deviatoric stress, one can sinter NPs into novel architectures such as nanowires and nanoceramics.

Pressure-Induced Oriented Attachment Growth of Large-Size Crystals for Constructing 3D Ordered Superstructures

Oriented attachment (OA), a nonclassical crystal growth mechanism, provides a powerful bottom-up approach to obtain ordered superstructures, which also demonstrate exciting charge transmission characteristic. However, there is little work observably pronouncing the achievement of 3D OA growth of crystallites with large size (e.g., submicrometer crystals). Here, we report that SnO2 3D ordered superstructures can be synthesized by means of a self-limited assembly assisted by OA in a designed high-pressure solvothermal system. The size of primary building blocks is 200-250 nm, which is significantly larger than that in previous results (normally <10 nm). High pressure plays the key role in the formation of 3D configuration and fusion of adjacent crystals. Furthermore, this high-pressure strategy can be readily expanded to additional materials. We anticipate that the welded structures will constitute an ideal system with relevance to applications in optical responses, lithium ion battery, solar cells, and chemical sensing.
