Smart surfaces with reversibly switchable wettability: Concepts, synthesis and applications

As a growing hot research topic, manufacturing smart switchable surfaces has attracted much attention in the past a few years. The state-of-the-art study on reversibly switchable wettability of smart surfaces has been presented in this systematic review. External stimuli are brought about to render the alteration in chemical conformation and surface morphology to drive the wettability switch. Here, starting from the fundamental theories related to the surfaces wetting principles, highlights on different triggers for switchable wettability, such as pH, light, ions, temperature, electric field, gas, mechanical force, and multi-stimuli are discussed. Different applications that have various wettability requirement are targeted, including oil-water separation, droplets manipulation, patterning, liquid transport, and so on. This review aims to provide a deep insight into responsive interfacial science and offer guidance for smart surface engineering. It ends with a summary of current challenges, future opportunities, and potential solutions on smart switch of wettability on superwetting surfaces.

Capillarity-driven migration of small objects: A critical review

The phenomena on the capillarity-driven migration of small objects are full of interest for both scientific and engineering communities, and a critical review is thereby presented. The small objects mentioned here deal with the non-deformable objects, such as particles, rods, disks and metal sheets; and besides them, the soft objects are considered, such as droplets and bubbles. Two types of interfaces are analyzed, i.e., the solid-fluid interface and the fluid-fluid interface. Due to the easily deformable properties of the soft objects and distorted interfacial shapes induced by small objects, a more convenient way to obtain the driving force is through the potential energy of the system. The asymmetric factors causing the object migration include the asymmetric configuration of the interface, and the difference between the interfacial tensions. Finally, a simple outlook on the potential applications of small object migration is made. These behaviors may cast new light on the design of microfluidics and new devices, environment cleaning, oil and gas displacement and mineral industries.

Camphor-Engine-Driven Micro-Boat Guides Evolution of Chemical Gardens

A micro-boat self-propelled by a camphor engine, carrying seed crystals of FeCl₃, promoted the evolution of chemical gardens when placed on the surface of aqueous solutions of potassium hexacyanoferrate. Inverse chemical gardens (growing from the top downward) were observed. The growth of the “inverse” chemical gardens was slowed down with an increase in the concentration of the potassium hexacyanoferrate. Heliciform precipitates were formed under the self-propulsion of the micro-boat. A phenomenological model, satisfactorily describing the self-locomotion of the camphor-driven micro-boat, is introduced and checked.

Mechano-regulated surface for manipulating liquid droplets

The effective transfer of tiny liquid droplets is vital for a number of processes such as chemical and biological microassays. Inspired by the tarsi of meniscus-climbing insects, which can climb menisci by deforming the water/air interface, we developed a mechano-regulated surface consisting of a background mesh and a movable microfibre array with contrastive wettability. The adhesion of this mechano-regulated surface to liquid droplets can be reversibly switched through mechanical reconfiguration of the microfibre array. The adhesive force can be tuned by varying the number and surface chemistry of the microfibres. The in situ adhesion of the mechano-regulated surface can be used to manoeuvre micro-/nanolitre liquid droplets in a nearly loss-free manner. The mechano-regulated surface can be scaled up to handle multiple droplets in parallel. Our approach offers a miniaturized mechano-device with switchable adhesion for handling micro-/nanolitre droplets, either in air or in a fluid that is immiscible with the droplets.

Droplet manipulation is an essential task for designing microfluidic platforms such as lab-on-chip devices. Here Tang et al. develop a non-wettable mesh with reversible liquid adhesion controlled by mechanically inserting wettable pillars which allows for effective and rapid droplet manoeuvring.
