Organic Semiconductors based on Dyes and Color Pigments

Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer toward Conical Intersections in Indigo, Epindolidione, and Indirubin

Indigo exhibits a high degree of photostability, experimentally supported by observations such as quenching of fluorescence and an exceptionally short excited-state lifetime. Epindolidione, a structural isomer of indigo, is highly fluorescent in contrast to indigo, while indirubin, another structural isomer, exhibits weak fluorescence similar to that of indigo. To elucidate the origin of the difference in photophysical and photochemical behavior, potential energy profiles of the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer in indigo, epindolidione, and indirubin are computationally studied by quantum chemical calculations using the TDDFT and extended MS-CASPT2 (XMS-CASPT2) methods. As a result, it is found that indigo and indirubin exhibit little energy barrier for the single proton transfer (SPT) in the S1(ππ*) state from the diketo to keto-enol form and low energy of the S1/S0 conical intersection (CI) in the latter form with a planar molecular structure. Epindolidione, on the other hand, exhibits much higher barriers for SPT and access to CI. These results suggest that the excited-state SPT and subsequent nonradiative deactivation via CI are more likely to occur in indigo and indirubin than in epindolidione, which is consistent with the experimental observations described above. For indigo and epindolidione, the deactivation channels via the second SPT from the keto-enol to dienol form are also compared.

Bioinspired Three-Component System to Prepare Full-Color Functional Biomimetic Pigments

Nature provides a great source of inspiration for the development of sustainable materials with excellent properties, among which melanin with optical, electronic, and radiation protection properties are considered to be promising coloring materials. However, compared to chemical pigments, the single color, complex oxidation process, and poor solubility of natural melanin strongly limit their further applications. Here, we introduce a series of melanin-like polymeric pigments with amino acid-encoded physicochemical properties by a simple three-component reaction system. Our protocol enables artificial control of the chromophore structures through the rational design of the substrates and dopants, thereby combining the safety and functionality of biopigments with the color richness of chemical dyes. Similar to the photoprotective effect of natural melanin, the polymeric pigments showed excellent antioxidant activity in reducing free radicals and have the advantages of iridescent color, strong tinting strength, stability, and affordability. Furthermore, due to their ability to dye substrates, these biomimetic are expected to become new low-cost bioactive chromophores and find various biochemical applications such as in clothing and hair dyeing, food addition, and anticounterfeiting detection.

XPS Depth-Profiling Studies of Chlorophyll Binding to Poly(cysteine methacrylate) Scaffolds in Pigment-Polymer Antenna Complexes Using a Gas Cluster Ion Source

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth-profiling with an argon gas cluster ion source (GCIS) was used to characterize the spatial distribution of chlorophyll a (Chl) within a poly(cysteine methacrylate) (PCysMA) brush grown by surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from a planar surface. The organization of Chl is controlled by adjusting the brush grafting density and polymerization time. For dense brushes, the C, N, S elemental composition remains constant throughout the 36 nm brush layer until the underlying gold substrate is approached. However, for either reduced density brushes (mean thickness ∼20 nm) or mushrooms grown with reduced grafting densities (mean thickness 6-9 nm), elemental intensities decrease continuously throughout the brush layer, because photoelectrons are less strongly attenuated for such systems. For all brushes, the fraction of positively charged nitrogen atoms (N+/N0) decreases with increasing depth. Chl binding causes a marked reduction in N+/N0 within the brushes and produces a new feature at 398.1 eV in the N1s core-line spectrum assigned to tetrapyrrole ring nitrogen atoms coordinated to Zn2+. For all grafting densities, the N/S atomic ratio remains approximately constant as a function of brush depth, which indicates a uniform distribution of Chl throughout the brush layer. However, a larger fraction of repeat units bound to Chl is observed at lower grafting densities, reflecting a progressive reduction in steric congestion that enables more uniform distribution of the bulky Chl units throughout the brush layer. In summary, XPS depth-profiling using a GCIS is a powerful tool for characterization of these complex materials.

Organic Mixed Ionic-Electronic Conductors for Bioelectronic Sensors: Materials and Operation Mechanisms

The field of organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs) has gained significant attention due to their ability to transport both electrons and ions, making them promising candidates for various applications. Initially focused on inorganic materials, the exploration of mixed conduction has expanded to organic materials, especially polymers, owing to their advantages such as solution processability, flexibility, and property tunability. OMIECs, particularly in the form of polymers, possess both electronic and ionic transport functionalities. This review provides an overview of OMIECs in various aspects covering mechanisms of charge transport including electronic transport, ionic transport, and ionic-electronic coupling, as well as conducting/semiconducting conjugated polymers and their applications in organic bioelectronics, including (multi)sensors, neuromorphic devices, and electrochromic devices. OMIECs show promise in organic bioelectronics due to their compatibility with biological systems and the ability to modulate electronic conduction and ionic transport, resembling the principles of biological systems. Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) based on OMIECs offer significant potential for bioelectronic applications, responding to external stimuli through modulation of ionic transport. An in-depth review of recent research achievements in organic bioelectronic applications using OMIECs, categorized based on physical and chemical stimuli as well as neuromorphic devices and circuit applications, is presented.

Asymmetrical Diketopyrrolopyrrole Derivatives with Improved Solubility and Balanced Charge Transport Properties

The diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) unit represents one of the building blocks more widely employed in the field of organic electronics; in most of the reported DPP-based small molecules, this unit represents the electron acceptor core symmetrically coupled to donor moieties, and the solubility is guaranteed by functionalizing lactamic nitrogens with long and branched alkyl tails. In this paper, we explored the possibility of modulating the solubility by realizing asymmetric DPP derivatives, where the molecular structure is extended in just one direction. Four novel derivatives have been prepared, characterized by a common dithyenil-DPP fragment and functionalized on one side by a thiophene unit linked to different auxiliary electron acceptor groups. As compared to previously reported symmetric analogs, the novel dyes showed an increased solubility in chloroform and proved to be soluble in THF as well. The novel dyes underwent a thorough optical and electrochemical characterization. Electronic properties were studied at the DFT levels. All the dyes were used as active layers in organic field effect transistors, showing balanced charge transport properties.

Redox-Active Boron Clusters

ConspectusIn this Account, we discuss our group's research over the past decade on a class of functionalized boron clusters with tunable chemical and physical properties, with an emphasis on accessing and controlling their redox behavior. These clusters can be thought of as three-dimensional aromatic systems that have distinct redox behavior and photophysical properties compared to their two-dimensional organic counterparts. Specifically, our lab has studied the highly tunable, multielectron redox behavior of B12(OR)12 clusters and applied these molecules in various settings. We first discuss the spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization of B12(OR)12 clusters in various oxidation states, followed by their use as catholytes and/or anolytes in redox flow batteries and chemical dopants in conjugated polymers. Additionally, the high oxidizing potential and visible light-absorbing nature of fluoroaryl-functionalized B12(OR)12 clusters have been leveraged by our group to generate weakly coordinating, photoexcitable species that can promote photooxidation chemistry.We have further translated these solution-phase studies of B12(OR)12 clusters to the solid state by using the precursor [B12(OH)12]2- cluster as a robust building block for hybrid metal oxide materials. Specifically, we have shown that the boron cluster can act as a thermally stable cross-linking material, which enhances electron transport between metal oxide nanoparticles. We applied this structural motif to create TiO2- and WO3-containing materials that showed promising properties as photocatalysts and electroactive materials for supercapacitors. Building on this concept, we later discovered that B12(OCH3)12, the smallest of the B12(OR)12 family, could retain its redox behavior in the solid state, a previously unseen phenomenon. We successfully harnessed this unique behavior for solid-state energy storage by implementing this boron cluster as a cathode-active material in a Li-ion prototype cell device. Recently, our group has also explored how to tune the redox properties of clusters other than B12(OR)12 species by synthesizing a library of vertex-differentiated clusters containing both B-OR and B-halogen groups. Due to the additive qualities of different functional groups on the cluster, these species allow access to a region of electrochemical potentials previously inaccessible by fully substituted closo-dodecaborate alkoxy-based derivatives.Lastly, we discuss our research into smaller-sized redox-active polyhedral boranes (B6- and B10-based cluster cores). Interestingly, these clusters show significantly less redox stability and reversibility than their dodecaborate-based counterparts. While exploring the functionalization of closo-hexaborate to create fully substituted derivates (i.e., [B6R6Hfac]-), we observed unique oxidative decomposition pathways for this cluster system. Consequently, we leveraged this oxidative instability to generate useful alkyl boronate esters via selective chemical oxidation. We further explored a closo-decaborate cluster as a platform to access electrophilic [B10H13]+ species capable of directly borylating arene compounds with unique regioselectivity. Upon chemical oxidation of the arylated decaborate clusters, we successfully synthesized various aryl boronate esters, establishing the generality of the oxidative cluster deconstruction concept.Overall, our work shows that boron clusters are an appealing class of redox-active molecules, and this fundamental and understudied property can be leveraged for constructing novel materials with tunable physical and electrochemical properties, as well as producing unique chemical reagents for small molecule synthesis.

Novel nanohybrid iron (II/III) phthalocyanine-based carbon nanotubes as catalysts for organic pollutant removal: process optimization by chemometric approach

In the present study, two iron phthalocyanine (FePc)-based nanocatalysts were synthesized and fully characterized. The carbon nanotubes (CNT) functionalized in an easy way with either Fe(II)Pc or Fe(III)Pc exhibit a very good catalytical activity. The activity in real wastewater effluent was comparable with the activity in distilled water. The procedure of modeling and optimizing with the assistance of chemometrics, utilizing design of experiments (DOE) and response surface methodology (RSM), revealed the conditions of optimum for decaying Reactive Yellow 84 on the nanocatalysts FePc_CNT. These optimal conditions included a catalyst dose of 1.70 g/L and an initial concentration (C0) of 20.0 mg/L. Under the indicated optimal conditions, the experimental findings verified that the removal efficiency was equal to Y = 98.92%, representing the highest observed value in this study. Under UVA light, after only 15 min of reaction, over 94% of dye was removed using both catalysts. The reuse experiments show that the activity of both nanohybrid material based on FePc-CNT slightly decreases over four consecutive runs. The quenching experiments show that RY84 was removed through radical pathways (O2•- and •OH) as well as non-radical pathways (1O2 and direct electron transfer).

Self-Assembly Behavior, Aggregation Structure, and the Charge Carrier Transport Properties of S-Heterocyclic Annulated Perylene Diimide Derivatives

The construction of high-performance n-type semiconductors is crucial for the advancement of organic electronics. As an attractive n-type semiconductor, molecular systems based on perylene diimide derivatives (PDIs) have been extensively investigated over recent years. Owing to the fascinating aggregated structure and high performance, S-heterocyclic annulated PDIs (SPDIs) are receiving increasing attention. However, the relationship between the structure and the electrical properties of SPDIs has not been deeply revealed, restricting the progress of PDI-based organic electronics. Here, we developed two novel SPDIs with linear and dendronized substituents in the imide position, named linear SPDI and dendronized SPDI, respectively. A series of structural and property characterizations indicated that linear SPDI formed a long-range-ordered crystalline structure based on helical supramolecular columns, while dendronized SPDI, with longer alkyl side chains, formed a 3D-ordered crystalline structure at a low temperature, which transformed into a hexagonal columnar liquid crystal structure at a high temperature. Moreover, no significant charge carrier transport signal was examined for linear SPDI, while dendronized SPDI had a charge carrier mobility of 3.5 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 2.1 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 in the crystalline and liquid crystalline state, respectively. These findings highlight the importance of the structure-function relationship in PDIs, and also offer useful roadmaps for the design of high-performance organic electronics for down-to-earth applications.

Aromatic Alcohol-Based pH-Sensitive Chromophore with a Unique Near-Infrared Dual-Band Solvatochromic Property and Its Application as a Ratiometric Fluorescent Sensor for G-Quadruplexes

Solvatochromes have gained great attention because of their unique roles in monitoring biomolecular location, interaction, and dynamics. Particularly, solvatochromes presenting both red-shifting excitation and dual-band switchable emission are in great demand yet significantly difficult to come true. In this article, we disclose an aromatic alcohol-based pH-sensitive chromophore NIR-HBT that not only presents red-shifting excitation and solvent-dependent dual-band emission but also shows high photostability and excellent brightness. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first solvatochrome to simultaneously display these optical properties. Especially, in contrast to the reported dual-band solvatochromes whose solvatochromism is achieved by affecting their excited state behaviors, the solvatochromism of NIR-HBT is realized by modulating its ground state proton dissociation, which is a new solvatochromic mechanism that has not been reported. Furthermore, based on the dual-band solvatochromism of NIR-HBT and its intrinsic binding ability to GQs, near-infrared ratiometric detection of GQs is achieved. These results indicate that NIR-HBT is an attractive solvatochrome that can be used to develop near-infrared ratiometric biosensors for biological research. More broadly, the discovered solvatochromic mechanism can also open new horizons for exploring the solvatochrome.

Unleashing the Power of PET-RAFT Polymerization: Journey from Porphyrin-Based Photocatalysts to Combinatorial Technologies and Advanced Bioapplications

The emergence of photoinduced energy/electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (PET-RAFT) not only revolutionized the field of photopolymerization but also accelerated the development of porphyrin-based photocatalysts and their analogues. The continual expansion of the monomer family compatible with PET-RAFT polymerization enhances the range of light radiation that can be harnessed, providing increased flexibility in polymerization processes. Furthermore, the versatility of PET-RAFT polymerization extends beyond its inherent capabilities, enabling its integration with various technologies in diverse fields. This integration holds considerable promise for the advancement of biomaterials with satisfactory bioapplications. As researchers delve deeper into the possibilities afforded by PET-RAFT polymerization, the collaborative efforts of individuals from diverse disciplines will prove invaluable in unleashing its full potential. This Review presents a concise introduction to the fundamental principles of PET-RAFT, outlines the progress in photocatalyst development, highlights its primary applications, and offers insights for future advancements in this technique, paving the way for exciting innovations and applications.

Cobalt(III)-containing penta-dentate "helmet"-type phthalogens: synthesis, solid-state structures and their thermal and electrochemical characterization

Treatment of unsubstituted and substituted phthalonitrile (1a-d) with appropriate equivalents of sodium methoxide and ammonia afforded the corresponding 1,3-diiminoisoindolines (2a-d), which were converted to cobalt(III)-containing penta-dentate "helmet"-type phthalogens (3a-d) by the reaction with CoCl2·6H2O as templating agent in the inert solvent 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. The identities of 2a-d and 3a-d were established by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). A computational study was performed to determine the most stable tautomeric form of 2a-c in the gas phase. The solid-state structures of 2b and 2c were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) studies to confirm their existence in the stereoisomeric anti-form, which is aligned with quantum chemical computations. SC-XRD studies of 3a and 3b revealed a slightly distorted octahedral geometry around the CoIII ions which are coordinated by five N-donor atoms and one extra co-ligand, resulting in a coordination environment of CoN5Cl (3a) and CoN5O (3b), respectively. The thermal stabilities of 2a-d and 3a-d were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in the temperature range of 40-500 °C and 40-800 °C, respectively, revealing that 3a-d were converted to the parent cobalt(II)-containing phthalocyanines (4a-d), which was verified independently by furnace heating experiments. Moreover, the electrochemical behavior of 3a was studied exemplarily for the phthalogens by cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. This study showed that 4a (CoPc) is formed irreversibly by reducing 3a electrochemically.

A Synthetic Route to Highly Substituted 1-Aminonaphthalenes from Readily Available Benzaldehydes

We report an efficient route for the synthesis of highly substituted 1-aminonaphthalenes from benzaldehydes. The method employs a stereoselective Still-Gennari modification of the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination to afford (E)-benzylidenesuccinonitrile precursors, which undergo Bronsted acid mediated benzannulation to afford 1-aminonaphthalene derivatives in 35-95% yield. The abundance of commercially available benzaldehydes, coupled with the simplicity of our method, enables many previously unexplored naphthalene substitution patterns to become readily accessible.

Molecular Engineering of Rylene Diimides via Sila-Annulation Toward High-Mobility Organic Semiconductors

The continuous innovation of captivating new organic semiconducting materials remains pivotal in the development of high-performance organic electronic devices. Herein, a molecular engineering by combining sila-annulation with the vertical extension of rylene diimides (RDIs) toward high-mobility organic semiconductors is presented. The unilateral and bilateral sila-annulated quaterrylene diimides (Si-QDI and 2Si-QDI) are designed and synthesized. In particular, the symmetrical bilateral 2Si-QDI exhibits a compact, 1D slipped π-π stacking arrangement through the synergistic combination of a sizable π-conjugated core and intercalating alkyl chains. Combining the appreciable elevated HOMO levels and reduced energy gaps, the single-crystalline organic field-effect transistors (SC-OFETs) based on 2Si-QDI demonstrate exceptional ambipolar transport characteristics with an impressive hole mobility of 3.0 cm2 V-1 s-1 and an electron mobility of 0.03 cm2 V-1 s-1 , representing the best ampibolar SC-OFETs based on RDIs. Detailed theoretical calculations rationalize that the larger transfer integral along the π-π stacking direction is responsible for the achievement of the superior charge transport. This study showcases the remarkable potential of sila-annulation in optimizing carrier transport performances of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Noncovalent Dualism in Perylene-Diimide-Based Keggin Anion Complexes: Theoretical and Experimental studies

We report the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of organic-inorganic hybrid salts formed by bis-cationic N,N'-bis(2-(trimethylammonium)ethylene)perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid bisimide (PTCD2+) and Keggin-type [XW12O40]n- (X = Si, n = 4; X = P, n = 3) polyoxometalates. (PTCD)3[PW12O40]2·3DMSO·2H2O (2) and (PTCD)2[SiW12O40]·DMSO·2H2O (3) were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The cations in both structures exhibited infinite chainlike arrangements through π-π interactions, contrasting with the previously reported cation-anion stacking observed in naphthalene diimide derivatives. A detailed theoretical study employing topological analysis of the electron density distribution within the quantum theory of atoms in molecules approach provided further insights into this structural dualism. Atomic force microscopy analyses revealed the formation of self-assembled supramolecular structures on graphite from molecular monolayers (3 nm of thick) to submicrometer aggregates for 2. Hyperspectral Raman spectroscopy imaging revealed that such heterostructures are likely formed by an enhanced π-π interactions. Both complexes demonstrated interesting electrochemical behavior, photoluminescence and X-ray-induced luminescence. Electron spin resonance analysis confirmed charge separation in both compounds, with enhanced efficiency observed in compound 2. Our findings of these perylene-based organic-inorganic hybrid salts offer the potential for their application in optoelectronic devices and functional materials.

Dithienoazepine-Based Near-Infrared Dyes: Janus-Faced Effects of a Thiophene-Fused Structure on Antiaromatic Azepines

We here disclose that the incorporation of thiophene rings into a seven-membered 8π azepine in a fused fashion produces a useful antiaromatic core for near-infrared (NIR) dyes. In contrast to dibenzazepine derivatives with bent structures, dithieno-fused derivatives with electron-accepting groups adopt flat conformations in the ground state. The dithieno-fused derivatives exhibited broad absorption spectra that cover the visible region as well as sharp emission bands in the NIR region, which are considerably red-shifted relative to those of the dibenzo-fused congeners. Theoretical study revealed two contradictory effects of the less-aromatic thiophene-fused structure, i.e., the enhancement of the antiaromaticity of the adjacent azepine ring and the relief of the antiaromaticity through the contribution of a quinoidal resonance form. The combination of the dithienoazepine core with cationic electron-accepting groups produced a NIR fluorescent dye with an emission at 878 nm in solution.

Synthesis of copper naphthalocyanine/graphene oxide composites as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Naphthalocyanine and its derivatives are new types of functional materials with wide application prospects. This paper discusses the synthesis of copper tetra tert-butyl-naphthalocyanine (CuNc) and analyses its molecular and electronic structure. Next, CuNc is combined with graphene oxide (GO) through π-π interaction and then pyrolyzed to form a CuNc/GO composite. A systematic investigation of the morphology, structure, composition and properties of CuNc/GO revealed that N-doped graphene is decorated with CuO particles. The electrochemical properties of CuNc/GO are compared with those of directly pyrolysed CuNc. The prepared CuNc/GO (1 : 1) electrode shows a large specific capacity (655.1 mA h g-1) after 100 cycles at 100 mA g-1. Its high capacity, enhanced cycling stability and strong rate performance are attributed to the synergetic effect of N-doped graphene and CuO particles. Besides expanding the use of naphthalocyanine compounds, this work presents a promising candidate material for lithium-ion battery anodes.

Versatile Double Bandgap Photonic Crystals of High Color Saturation

Double bandgap photonic crystals (PCs) exhibit significant potential for applications in various color display-related fields. However, they show low color saturation and inadequate color modulation capabilities. This study presents a viable approach to the fabrication of double bandgap photonic inks diffracting typical secondary colors and other composite colors by simply mixing two photonic nanochains (PNCs) of different primary colors as pigments in an appropriate percentage following the conventional RGB color matching method. In this approach, the PNCs are magnetically responsive and display three primary colors that can be synthesized by combining hydrogen bond-guided and magnetic field (H)-assisted template polymerization. The as-prepared double bandgap photonic inks present high color saturation due to the fixed and narrow full-width at half-maxima of the parent PNCs with a suitable chain length. Furthermore, they can be used to easily produce a flexible double bandgap PC film by embedding the PNCs into a gel, such as polyacrylamide, facilitating fast steady display performance without the requirement of an external magnetic field. This research not only presents the unique advantages of PNCs in constructing multi-bandgap PCs but also establishes the feasibility of utilizing PNCs in practical applications within the fields of anti-counterfeiting and flexible wearable devices.

Cyclohexene-Embedded Dicyanomethylene Merocyanines - Consecutive Three-Component Coupling-Addition Synthesis and Chromophore Characteristics

A concise and efficient consecutive three-component alkynylation-addition synthesis of cyclohexene-embedded dicyanomethylene merocyanines furnishes a small library of dyes in moderate to excellent yield. The dyes possess strong absorption coefficients of the longest wavelength absorption bands. According to the crystal structure, the small bond length alternations account for a highly delocalized electronic ground state. The electronic structure of the absorption bands is qualitatively rationalized by TDDFT calculations, which explain that intense HOMO-LUMO transitions along the merocyanine axis lead to cyanine similar Stokes shifts.

Physical Properties of E143 Food Dye as a New Organic Semiconductor Nanomaterial

Organic semiconductors (OSCs) have attracted considerable attention for many promising applications, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), and organic photovoltaics (OPVs). The present work introduced E143 food dye as a new nanostructured organic semiconductor that has several advantages, such as low cost, easy fabrication, biocompatibility, and unique physical properties. The material was characterized using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and optical absorption spectroscopy. The study of X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that E143 dye has a monoclinic polycrystalline structure. Electrical and dielectric properties were performed by impedance spectroscopy at frequencies (20 Hz-1 MHz) in the temperature range (303-473 K). The values of interband transitions and activation energy recommended the application of E143 dye as a new organic semiconductor material with promising stability, especially in the range of hot climates such as KSA.

Computational Approaches for Organic Semiconductors: From Chemical and Physical Understanding to Predicting New Materials

While a complete understanding of organic semiconductor (OSC) design principles remains elusive, computational methods─ranging from techniques based in classical and quantum mechanics to more recent data-enabled models─can complement experimental observations and provide deep physicochemical insights into OSC structure-processing-property relationships, offering new capabilities for in silico OSC discovery and design. In this Review, we trace the evolution of these computational methods and their application to OSCs, beginning with early quantum-chemical methods to investigate resonance in benzene and building to recent machine-learning (ML) techniques and their application to ever more sophisticated OSC scientific and engineering challenges. Along the way, we highlight the limitations of the methods and how sophisticated physical and mathematical frameworks have been created to overcome those limitations. We illustrate applications of these methods to a range of specific challenges in OSCs derived from π-conjugated polymers and molecules, including predicting charge-carrier transport, modeling chain conformations and bulk morphology, estimating thermomechanical properties, and describing phonons and thermal transport, to name a few. Through these examples, we demonstrate how advances in computational methods accelerate the deployment of OSCsin wide-ranging technologies, such as organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic thermoelectrics, organic batteries, and organic (bio)sensors. We conclude by providing an outlook for the future development of computational techniques to discover and assess the properties of high-performing OSCs with greater accuracy.

Anomalous deep-red luminescence of perylene black analogues with strong π-π interactions

Perylene bisimide (PBI) dyes are known as red, maroon and black pigments, whose colors depend on the close π-π stacking arrangement. However, contrary to the luminescent monomers, deep-red and black PBI pigments are commonly non- or only weakly fluorescent due to (multiple) quenching pathways. Here, we introduce N-alkoxybenzyl substituted PBIs that contain close π stacking arrangement (exhibiting d_π-π ≈ 3.5 Å, and longitudinal and transversal displacements of 3.1 Å and 1.3 Å); however, they afford deep-red emitters with solid-state fluorescence quantum yields (Φ_F) of up to 60%. Systematic photophysical and computational studies in solution and in the solid state reveal a sensitive interconversion of the PBI-centred locally excited state and a charge transfer state, which depends on the dihedral angle (θ) between the benzyl and alkoxy groups. This effectively controls the emission process, and enables high Φ_F by circumventing the common quenching pathways commonly observed for perylene black analogues.

Intramolecular and Intermolecular Interaction Switching in the Aggregates of Perylene Diimide Trimer: Effect of Hydrophobicity

The research on perylene diimide (PDI) aggregates effectively promotes their applications in organic photovoltaic solar cells and fluorescent sensors. In this paper, a PDI fabricated with three peripheral PDI units (N, N’-bis(6-undecyl) perylene-3,4,9,10-bis(dicarboximide)) is investigated. The trimer shows different absorption and fluorescence properties due to hydrophobicity when dissolved in the mixed solvent of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water. Through comprehensive analysis of the fluorescence lifetime and transient absorption spectroscopic results, we concluded that the trimer underwent different excited state kinetic pathways with different concentrations of water in THF. When dissolved in pure THF solvent, both the intramolecular charge-transfer and excimer states are formed. When the water concentration increases from 0 to 50% (v/v), the formation time of the excimer state and its structural relaxation time are prolonged, illustrating the arising of the intermolecular excimer state. It is interesting to determine that the probability of the intramolecular charge-transfer pathway will first decrease and then increase as the speed of intermolecular excimer formation slows down. The two inflection points appear when the water concentration is above 10% and 40%. The results not only highlight the importance of hydrophobicity on the aggregate properties of PDI multimers but also guide the further design of PDI-based organic photovoltaic solar cells.

A novel strategy for the functionalization and design of 4-methylene-4H-pyran merocyanines via enamination and 1,8-conjugate addition

4-Methylene-4H-pyrans are popular merocyanine dyes, but their functionalization is limited by the Knoevenagel condensation with aromatic aldehydes. In this work, we developed a novel approach for the construction of a new class of pyran fluorophores based on enamination and subsequent nucleophilic substitution of the dimethylamino group via 1,8-conjugate addition/elimination. This methodology includes selective transformations leading to previously unknown symmetrical and asymmetrical structures. The dimethylaminovinyl-substituted pyrans are reactive intermediates and can be considered as a convenient synthetic tool for the construction of new merocyanines with tunable fluorescence (417-628 nm). The main strategies for the modification of the pyran moiety have been determined for the construction and targeted design of fluorophores. Pyrans bearing two enamine moieties demonstrate significant light extinction coefficients (up to 116 000 M^-1 cm^-1), high quantum yields (up to 69%) and large Stokes shifts (up to 152 nm) because of their strong push-pull nature. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed for the explanation of the structural and photophysical features of the prepared merocyanines. The developed approach can be considered as a useful platform for further application of 4-methylene-4H-pyrans as promising fluorophores for sensors and solar cells, and in bioimaging.

Benzimidazolone-Dioxazine Pigments-Based Conjugated Polymers for Organic Field-Effect Transistor

Molecules based on benzimidazolone-dioxazine are known as blue/violet pigments and have been commercialized for decades. However, unfavorable solubility limits the application of these structures as building blocks of conjugated polymers despite their low band gaps. Herein, a series of donor-acceptor conjugated polymers containing soluble benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures as the acceptors and oligothiophene as donors are synthesized and investigated. With increasing numbers of thiophene rings, the steric hindrance diminishes and high molecular weight polymers can be achieved, leading to an improved performance in organic field effect transistor devices. The hole mobility of polymers with three to six thiophene units is in the order of 10^-1 cm² V^-1 s ^-1 . Among all the polymers, polymer P3 with three thiophene units between benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures shows the best hole mobility of 0.4 cm² V^-1 s ^-1 . Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering results reveal that the high mobility of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) can be accredited by matched donor-acceptor packing in the solid thin films.

On-Chip Microdevice Unveils Reactant Enrichment Effect Dominated Electrocatalysis Activity in Molecular-Linked Catalysts

Molecular functionalization has been intensely studied and artificially constructed to advance various electrocatalytic processes. While there is a widely approved charge-doping effect, the underlying action for reactant distribution/transport remains long neglected. Here an on-chip microdevice unravels that the proton enrichment effect at prototypical methylene blue (MB)/MoS₂ interfaces rather than charge doping contributes to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. Back-gated electrical/electrochemical tests detect quantitatively a strong charge injection from MB to MoS₂ realized over diploid carrier density, but these excess carriers are unqualified for the actual enhanced HER activity (from 32 to 125 mA cm^-2 at -0.29 V). On-chip electrochemical impedance further certifies that the proton enrichment in the vicinity of MoS₂, which is generated by the nucleophilic group of MB, actually dominates the HER activity. This finding uncovers the leading function of molecular-linked catalysts.

Solution-Processed Isoindigo- and Thienoisoindigo-Based Donor-Acceptor-Donor π-Conjugated Small Molecules: Synthesis, Morphology, Molecular Packing, and Field-Effect Transistor Characterization

Molecular design and precise control of thin-film morphology and crystallinity of solution-processed small molecules are important for enhancing charge transport mobility of organic field-effect transistors and gaining more insight into the structure-property relationship. Here, two donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) architecture small molecules TRA-IID-TRA and TRA-TIID-TRA comprising an electron-donating triarylamine (TRA) and two different electron-withdrawing cores, isoindigo (IID) and thienoisoindigo (TIID), respectively, were synthesized and characterized. Replacing the phenylene rings of central IID A with thiophene gives a TIID core, which reduces the optical band gap and upshifts the energy levels of frontier molecular orbitals. The single-crystal structures and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) analysis revealed that TRA-TIID-TRA exhibits the relatively tighter π-π stacking packing with preferential edge-on orientation, larger coherence length, and higher crystallinity due to the noncovalent S···O/S···π intermolecular interactions. The distinctly oriented and connected ribbon-like TRA-TIID-TRA crystalline film by the solution-shearing process achieved a superior hole mobility of 0.89 cm² V^-1 s^-1 in the organic field-effect transistor (OFET) device, which is at least five times higher than that (0.17 cm² V^-1 s^-1) of TRA-IID-TRA with clear cracks. Eventually, rational modulation of fused core in the π-conjugated D-A-D small molecule provides a new understanding of structural design for enhancing the performance of solution-processed organic semiconductors.

Divalent Benzimidazolium-Based Axles for Self-Reporting Pseudorotaxanes

Mono- and (bis)benzimidazoliums were evaluated both experimentally and computationally for their potential as pseudopolyrotaxane axle building blocks. Their aggregation and photophysical behavior, along with their potential to form a [2]pseudorotaxane with dibenzyl-24-crown-8, was studied through the synergistic application of 1D/2D and diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, and time-dependent density functional theory. Their photophysical behavior was measured and modeled as a function of protonation state, solvent, and concentration. The axles show strong solvochromaticism and a very pronounced concentration-dependent optical profile, including self-quenching when a pseudorotaxane is formed. This axle with multiple recognition sites has the potential to form pseudorotaxanes with tunable optical behavior.

Improved Syntheses of Halogenated Benzene-1,2,3,4-Tetracarboxylic Diimides

The preparation of halogenated benzene-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic diimide derivatives is challenging because of the possibility of competitive incorrect cyclizations and S_NAr reactivity. Here, we demonstrate that bypassing traditional cyclic anhydrides and instead directly reacting dihalobenzene-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acids with primary amines in acetic acid solvent successfully provides a range of desirable ortho-diimide products in good yields. Furthermore, we demonstrate that sterically challenging N-derivatizations can be readily achieved under microwave reactor conditions. The halogenated diimides described here are attractive building blocks for organic materials chemistry.

Relationship between the Molecular Geometry and the Radiative Efficiency in Naphthyl-Based Bis-Ortho-Carboranyl Luminophores

The efficiency of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT)-based emission on π-aromatic-group-appended closo-ortho-carboranyl luminophores is known to be affected by structural fluctuations and molecular geometry, but investigation of this relationship has been in progress to date. In this study, four naphthyl-based bis-o-carboranyl compounds, in which hydrogen (15CH and 26CH) or trimethysilyl groups (15CS and 26CS) were appended at the o-carborane cage, were synthesized and fully characterized. All the compounds barely displayed an emissive trace in solution at 298 K; however, 15CH and 26CH distinctly exhibited a dual emissive pattern in rigid states (in solution at 77 K and in films), attributed to locally excited (LE) and ICT-based emission, while 15CS and 26CS showed strong ICT-based greenish emission. Intriguingly, the molecular structures of the four compounds, analyzed by single X-ray crystallography, showed that the C-C bond axis of the o-carborane cage in the trimethysilyl group-appended compounds 15CS and 26CS were more orthogonal to the plane of the appended naphthyl group than those in 15CH and 26CH. These features indicate that 15CS and 26CS present an efficient ICT transition based on strong exo-π-interaction, resulting in a higher quantum efficiency (Φ_em) for ICT-based radiative decay than those of 15CH and 26CH. Moreover, the 26CS structure revealed most orthogonal geometry, resulting in the highest Φ_em and lowest k_nr values for the ICT-based emission. Consequently, all the findings verified that efficient ICT-based radiative decay of aromatic group-appended o-carboranyl luminophores could be achieved by the formation of a specific geometry between the o-carborane cage and the aromatic plane.

Peri-Decoration of a Tetraazaperylene with Urea Units: Chiral Octaazaperopyrenedioxides (OAPPDOs) and Their Optical and Chiroptical Properties

Octaazaperopyrenedioxides (OAPPDOs) are a new class of fluorescent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons based on a tetraazaperylene core that is formally condensed with N-substituted urea units in the two opposite peri positions. Here, we report the synthesis of series of substituted OAPPDO derivatives with different N-substitution patterns (H, alkyl, benzyl) in the peri positions, including bay-chlorinated OAPPDOs. Starting from the latter, a series of bay-arylated OAPPDOs was synthesized by Suzuki cross coupling, which resulted in the formation of helically chiral OAPPDO derivatives. The electrochemical and photophysical properties were investigated by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry. The P and M enantiomers of a phenylated OAPPDO were separated by semipreparative HPLC and further analyzed by CD spectroscopy. The frontier orbital energies, the mechanism of the isomerization, the electronic excitation and the CD spectrum (TD-DFT) were computed and compared to the experimental data. The reversible 1e^- oxidation of the OAPPDOs generates the corresponding radical cations, one of which was characterized by EPR spectroscopy. The reversible oxidation process was also systematically investigated by spectro-electrochemistry.

Molecular origin of structural defects in the zinc phthalocyanine film

Controlling the growth of thin phthalocyanine films is a long-term challenge for the science of applied nanomaterials. So, this contribution deals with films of unsubstituted zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and seeks to acquire structural information that is unavailable via physical experiments, thus, finding out how the film morphology can be seriously improved. A model of the vapor-deposited film has been created using the molecular dynamics method. Specifically, the ZnPc molecules are dosed into the simulation box under normal conditions, reproducing key features of the real film, such as the trimolecular wetting layer and the island-like three-dimensional (3D) phase that is structured like the α-polymorph; then all film fragments are characterized via their radial distribution functions and mean-squared displacements. The simulation model indicates that the 3D phase starts to develop smoothly through multimolecular cofacial stacking but finally becomes fragmental because the wetting layer is too meager to be a good platform for regular film growth. Accordingly, the film morphology may be improved if the wetting layer is thickened via restraining the vertical development of the 3D phase. Following this idea, uniform ZnPc films impaired by neither grain boundaries nor coarser defects were deposited from solutions and visualized at the nanometer scale.

Catalytic Activation of Imines by Chalcogen Bond Donors in a Povarov [4+2] Cycloaddition Reaction

Recently, chalcogen bonding has been investigated in more detail in organocatalysis and the scope of activated functionalities continues to increase. Herein, the activation of imines in a Povarov [4+2] cycloaddition reaction with bidentate cationic chalcogen bond donors is presented. Tellurium‐based Lewis acids show superior properties compared to selenium‐based catalysts and inactive sulfur‐based analogues. The catalytic activity of the chalcogen bonding donors increases with weaker binding anions. Triflate, however, is not suitable due to its participation in the catalytic pathway. A solvent screening revealed a more efficient activation in less polar solvents and a pronounced effect of solvent (and catalyst) on endo : exo diastereomeric ratio. Finally, new chiral chalcogen bonding catalysts were applied but provided only racemic mixtures of the product.

Complete Set of Diketopyrrolopyrrole Centrosymmetrical Cofacial Stacked Pairs

Stacked centrosymmetrical dimers and simultaneously H-bonded and stacked hexamers of thiophene-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole (ThDPP) were studied using DFT as models for crystals with slipped-stacked molecules in 1D columns. Eight stacked dimer arrangements were found, six of which are driven by the minimisation of electron repulsion and realised by placing the partially negatively charged atoms of the diketopyrrolopyrrole rings below the centre of an adjancent thiophene ring. Four of these stacks are related to N,N'-diacylated derivative. An analogous set of eight stacks was discovered computationally for phenyl-substituted DPP (PhDPP), four of which are known among H-bonded DPP pigments, and one more among N,N'-dialkylated PhDPP derivatives. The results shed more light on the mechanisms that drive the formation of stacks between nonaromatic (DPP) and aromatic (Th, Ph) rings. The excitation energies of the lowest four singlet states computed by TD DFT enabled excitonic coupling and energy separation between Frenkel-resonsnce-type and charge-transfer states to be established, depending on the equilibrium stack geometry.

Living supramolecular polymerization of an amphiphilic aza-BODIPY dye realized by water-assisted kinetic trapping

The kinetic assembly pathways of a newly synthesized amphiphilic aza-BODIPY dye 1 were tuned by using H₂O as a co-solvent in MeOH. Accordingly, the biphasic aggregation pathways resulting in kinetically-trapped and thermodynamically stable aggregates of 1 were established and the multiple cyclic seeded living supramolecular polymerization of this dye was realized.

Controlled Growth and Self-Assembly of Multiscale Organic Semiconductor

Currently, organic semiconductors (OSs) are widely used as active components in practical devices related to energy storage and conversion, optoelectronics, catalysis, and biological sensors, etc. To satisfy the actual requirements of different types of devices, chemical structure design and self-assembly process control have been synergistically performed. The morphology and other basic properties of multiscale OS components are governed on a broad scale from nanometers to macroscopic micrometers. Herein, the up-to-date design strategies for fabricating multiscale OSs are comprehensively reviewed. Related representative works are introduced, applications in practical devices are discussed, and future research directions are presented. Design strategies combining the advances in organic synthetic chemistry and supramolecular assembly technology perform an integral role in the development of a new generation of multiscale OSs.

Recent Progress of Squaraine-Based Fluorescent Materials and Their Biomedical Applications

Squaraines (SQs) are unusual cyanine dyes with a unique resonance-stabilized zwitterionic structure. These dyes have attracted significant attention in the fields of organic electronics and organic photonics, due to their facile synthesis, intense and narrow visible and near-infrared absorption/emission, high photostability, low biotoxicity, etc. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of SQ-based fluorescent materials and their biomedical applications. After a brief introduction to SQs, general synthetic routes and design principles of SQ-based fluorescent materials, as well as their aggregation-induced luminescence behaviors, are discussed. Subsequently, their biomedical applications for cell imaging and as fluorescent sensors and therapeutic agents are introduced. Finally, a summary and perspective are given for promoting the development of SQs-based fluorescent materials.

Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer Dyes with Dual-State Emission Properties: Concept, Examples and Applications

Dual-state emissive (DSE) fluorophores are organic dyes displaying fluorescence emission both in dilute and concentrated solution and in the solid-state, as amorphous, single crystal, polycrystalline samples or thin films. This comes in contrast to the vast majority of organic fluorescent dyes which typically show intense fluorescence in solution but are quenched in concentrated media and in the solid-state owing to π-stacking interactions; a well-known phenomenon called aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). On the contrary, molecular rotors with a significant number of free rotations have been engineered to show quenched emission in solution but strong fluorescence in the aggregated-state thanks to restriction of the intramolecular motions. This is the concept of aggregation-induced emission (AIE). DSE fluorophores have been far less explored despite the fact that they are at the crossroad of ACQ and AIE phenomena and allow targeting applications both in solution (bio-conjugation, sensing, imaging) and solid-state (organic electronics, data encryption, lasing, luminescent displays). Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) fluorescence is particularly suitable to engineer DSE dyes. Indeed, ESIPT fluorescence, which relies on a phototautomerism between normal and tautomeric species, is characterized by a strong emission in the solid-state along with a large Stokes’ shift, an enhanced photostability and a strong sensitivity to the close environment, a feature prone to be used in bio-sensing. A drawback that needs to be overcome is their weak emission intensity in solution, owing to detrimental molecular motions in the excited-state. Several strategies have been proposed in that regard. In the past few years, a growing number of examples of DSE-ESIPT dyes have indeed emerged in the literature, enriching the database of such attractive dyes. This review aims at a brief but concise overview on the exploitation of ESIPT luminescence for the optimization of DSE dyes properties. In that perspective, a synergistic approach between organic synthesis, fluorescence spectroscopy and ab initio calculations has proven to be an efficient tool for the construction and optimization of DSE-ESIPT fluorophores.

Double helical π-aggregate nanoarchitectonics for amplified circularly polarized luminescence

The canonical double helical π-stacked array of base pairs within DNA interior has inspired the interest in supramolecular double helical architectures with advanced electronic, magnetic and optical functions. Here, we report a selective-recognized and chirality-matched co-assembly strategy for the fabrication of fluorescent π-amino acids into double helical π-aggregates, which show exceptional strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The single crystal structure of the optimal combination of co-assemblies shows that the double-stranded helical organization of these π-amino acids is cooperatively assisted by both CH-π and hydrogen-bond arrays with chirality match. The well-defined spatial arrangement of the π-chromophores could effectively suppress the non-radiative decay pathways and facilitate chiral exciton couplings, leading to superior CPL with a strong figure of merit (g_lum = 0.14 and QY = 0.76). Our findings might open a new door for developing DNA-inspired chiroptical materials with prominent properties by enantioselective co-assembly initiated double helical π-aggregation.

Towards Nitrogen‐Rich N‐Heteropolycycles: Synthesis of Octaazaperopyrenes (OAPP)

Ortho substituted octaazaperopyrenes (OAPPs) are a new class of functional dyes characterized by their strong electron‐accepting behavior. Herein, the synthesis, as well as the electrochemical and photo physical properties of an OAPP dye, is reported. The OAPP target was prepared via selective nucleophilic substitution at the peri position of a bay chlorinated tetraazaperylene by introduction of four amino‐substituents. The resulting tetraminoperylene was reacted with different acyl chlorides and anhydrides to give the twisted bay chlorinated OAPP derivatives which were isolated in their reduced dihydro‐form. The OAPP target could be obtained via a palladium catalyzed dehalogenation and a subsequent oxidation. The eightfold isosteric [CH→N] replacement within the peropyrene core structure results in a large decrease of the frontier orbital energies, rendering the target compound a potent oxidant while preserving the planarity of the aromatic core. The radical anion was obtained by reduction of the OAPP with KC₈ and characterized by EPR spectroscopy. A general discussion of the number and location of [CH→N] replacements in peropyrene structures and their frontier orbital energies is provided.

Palladium-catalyzed synthesis of nitriles from N-phthaloyl hydrazones

The Pd-catalyzed transformation of N-phthaloyl hydrazones into nitriles involving the cleavage of an N-N bond is reported. The use of N-heterocyclic carbene as a ligand is essential for the success of the reaction. N-Phthaloyl hydrazones prepared from aromatic aldehydes or cyclobutanones are applicable to this transformation, which gives aryl or alkenyl nitriles, respectively.

Isolation and Structural Characterization of Regioisomers of Dibrominated Terrylene Diimides

Diverse applications of rylenediimides are attributed to the accessibility of simple methodologies to obtain versatile halogenated precursors. Terrylene diimides are important molecular platforms to achieve materials with NIR absorption and emission. In this work, we present a simple synthesis for the hitherto unknown di- and tribromo-TDIs. Regioisomerically pure dibromo TDIs, including an elusive 1,14-derivative, could be successfully isolated and structurally characterized along with tribromo-TDI. The utility of these bromo derivatives has also been demonstrated with a redox anchoring.

Perylene-Based Chromophore as a Versatile Dye for Light Amplification

One of the challenges for modern optoelectronics is to find versatile, easily adaptable components for novel laser-based technologies. A very attractive perylene-derivative chromophore in different organic matrices for high-performance light amplification is discussed and outlined. Our approach demonstrates the outstandingly compatible laser dye and a viable strategy to provide an effective optical gain for stimulated emission enhancement. Through structural control, we produce simple optical devices embedded in organic matrices, such as poly(methyl methacrylate), nematic liquid crystalline (NLC) mixture, and a hybrid emulsion system (poly(vinyl alcohol) PVA + NLC mesophase). Importantly, we investigate and compare the spectroscopy of differently constructed organic systems in terms of stimulated-emission thresholds and light amplification process efficiency. Moreover, we report the effects of tunability for LC cells by an applied external electric field stimulus. Future directions of laser systems are outlined with an emphasis on the role of the perylene derivative. The studies meet current challenges in the field of modern organic technologies dedicated to various optoelectronic systems, including touch screens, displays, and Li-Fi networks.

Synthesis and reactivity of the apically functionalized (pseudo)macrobicyclic iron(ii) tris-dioximates and their hybrid phthalocyaninatoclathrochelate derivatives comprising reactive and vector terminal groups

Iron(ii) phthalocyaninatoclathrochelates functionalized with terminal reactive formyl group were prepared. Their post-synthetic functionalization gave those with vector pharmacophoric fragment.
