Direct Fabrication of 3D Metallic Networks and Their Performance

Strong coupling between an inverse bowtie Nano-Antenna and a J-aggregate

We demonstrate strong coupling between a single or few J-aggregates and an inverse bowtie plasmonic structure, when the J-aggregate is located at a specific axial distance from the metallic surface. Three hybrid modes are clearly observed, witnessing a strong interaction, with a Rabi splitting of up to 290 meV, the precise value of which significantly depends on the orientation of the J-aggregate with respect to the symmetry axis of the plasmonic structure. We repeated our experiments with a set of triangular hole arrays, showing consistent formation of three or more hybrid modes, in good agreement with numerical simulations.

Noble Metal Nanoparticles Decorated Metal Oxide Semiconducting Nanowire Arrays Interwoven into 3D Mesoporous Superstructures for Low-Temperature Gas Sensing

Mesoporous materials have been extensively studied for various applications due to their high specific surface areas and well-interconnected uniform nanopores. Great attention has been paid to synthesizing stable functional mesoporous metal oxides for catalysis, energy storage and conversion, chemical sensing, and so forth. Heteroatom doping and surface modification of metal oxides are typical routes to improve their performance. However, it still remains challenging to directly and conveniently synthesize mesoporous metal oxides with both a specific functionalized surface and heteroatom-doped framework. Here, we report a one-step multicomponent coassembly to synthesize Pt nanoparticle-decorated Si-doped WO₃ nanowires interwoven into 3D mesoporous superstructures (Pt/Si-WO₃ NWIMSs) by using amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS), Keggin polyoxometalates (H₄SiW₁₂O₄₀) and hydrophobic (1,5-cyclooctadiene)dimethylplatinum(II) as the as structure-directing agent, tungsten precursor and platinum source, respectively. The Pt/Si-WO₃ NWIMSs exhibit a unique mesoporous structure consisting of 3D interwoven Si-doped WO₃ nanowires with surfaces homogeneously decorated by Pt nanoparticles. Because of the highly porous structure, excellent transport of carriers in nanowires, and rich WO₃/Pt active interfaces, the semiconductor gas sensors based on Pt/Si-WO₃ NWIMSs show excellent sensing properties toward ethanol at low temperature (100 °C) with high sensitivity (S = 93 vs 50 ppm), low detection limit (0.5 ppm), fast response-recovery speed (17-7 s), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability.

Nanoporous Metals: From Plasmonic Properties to Applications in Enhanced Spectroscopy and Photocatalysis

The field of plasmonics is capable of enabling interesting applications in different wavelength ranges, spanning from the ultraviolet up to the infrared. The choice of plasmonic material and how the material is nanostructured has significant implications for ultimate performance of any plasmonic device. Artificially designed nanoporous metals (NPMs) have interesting material properties including large specific surface area, distinctive optical properties, high electrical conductivity, and reduced stiffness, implying their potentials for many applications. This paper reviews the wide range of available nanoporous metals (such as Au, Ag, Cu, Al, Mg, and Pt), mainly focusing on their properties as plasmonic materials. While extensive reports on the use and characterization of NPMs exist, a detailed discussion on their connection with surface plasmons and enhanced spectroscopies as well as photocatalysis is missing. Here, we report on different metals investigated, from the most used nanoporous gold to mixed metal compounds, and discuss each of these plasmonic materials' suitability for a range of structural design and applications. Finally, we discuss the potentials and limitations of the traditional and alternative plasmonic materials for applications in enhanced spectroscopy and photocatalysis.

False Morphology of Aerogels Caused by Gold Coating for SEM Imaging

The imaging of non-conducting materials by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is most often performed after depositing few nanometers thick conductive layers on the samples. It is shown in this work, that even a 5 nm thick sputtered gold layer can dramatically alter the morphology and the surface structure of many different types of aerogels. Silica, polyimide, polyamide, calcium-alginate and cellulose aerogels were imaged in their pristine forms and after gold sputtering utilizing low voltage scanning electron microscopy (LVSEM) in order to reduce charging effects. The morphological features seen in the SEM images of the pristine samples are in excellent agreement with the structural parameters of the aerogels measured by nitrogen adsorption-desorption porosimetry. In contrast, the morphologies of the sputter coated samples are significantly distorted and feature nanostructured gold. These findings point out that extra care should be taken in order to ensure that gold sputtering does not cause morphological artifacts. Otherwise, the application of low voltage scanning electron microscopy even yields high resolution images of pristine non-conducting aerogels.

Monolithic Nanoporous Gold Foams with Catalytic Activity for Chemical Vapor Deposition Growth of Carbon Nanostructures

While bulk gold is generally considered to be a catalytically inactive material, nanostructured forms of gold can in fact be highly catalytically active. However, few methods exist for preparing high-purity macroscopic forms of catalytically active gold. In this work, we describe the synthesis of catalytically active macroscopic nanoporous gold foams via combustion synthesis of gold bis(tetrazolato)amine complexes. The resulting metallically pure porous gold nanoarchitectures exhibit bulk densities of <0.1 g/cm³ and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas as high as 10.9 m²/g, making them among the lowest-density and highest-surface-area monolithic forms of gold produced to date. Thanks to the presence of a highly nanostructured gold surface, such gold nanofoams have also been found to be highly catalytically active toward thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of carbon nanotubes, providing a novel method for direct synthesis of carbon nanostructures on macroscopic gold substrates. In contrast, analogous copper nanofoams were found to be catalytically inactive toward the growth of graphitic nanostructures under the same synthesis conditions, highlighting the unusually high catalytic propensity of this form factor of gold. The combustion synthesis process described herein represents a never-wet approach for directly synthesizing macroscopic catalytically active gold. Unlike sol-gel and dealloying approaches, combustion synthesis eliminates the time-consuming diffusion-mediated steps associated with previous methods and offers multiple degrees of freedom for tuning morphology, electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties.

Cathodoluminescence Nanoscopy of 3D Plasmonic Networks

Nanoporous metallic networks are endowed with the distinctive optical properties of strong field enhancement and spatial localization, raising the necessity to map the optical eigenmodes with high spatial resolution. In this work, we used cathodoluminescence (CL) to map the local electric fields of a three-dimensional (3D) silver network made of nanosized ligaments and holes over a broad spectral range. A multitude of neighboring hotspots at different frequencies and intensities are observed at subwavelength distances over the network. In contrast to well-defined plasmonic structures, the hotspots do not necessarily correlate with the network morphology, emphasizing the complexity and energy dissipation through the network. In addition, we show that the inherent connectivity of the networked structure plays a key optical role because a ligament with a single connected linker shows localized modes whereas an octopus-like ligament with multiple connections permits energy propagation through the network.

Hierarchically Porous Carbon Materials from Self-Assembled Block Copolymer/Dopamine Mixtures

Hierarchically porous carbon materials with interconnected frameworks of macro- and mesopores are desirable for electrochemical applications in biosensors, electrocatalysis, and supercapacitors. In this study, we report a facile synthetic route to fabricate hierarchically porous carbon materials by controlled macro- and mesophase separation of a mixture of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene) and dopamine. The morphology of mesopores is tailored by controlling the coassembly of PS-b-PEO and dopamine in the acidic tetrahydrofuran-water cosolvent. HCl addition plays a critical role via enhancing the charge-dipole interactions between PEO and dopamine and suppressing the clustering and chemical reactions of dopamine in solution. As a result, subsequent drying can produce interpenetrated PS-b-PEO/DA mixtures without forming dopamine microsized crystallites. Dopamine oxidative polymerization induced by solvent annealing in NH₄OH vapor enables the formation of percolating macropores. Subsequent pyrolysis to selectively remove the PS-b-PEO template from the complex can produce hierarchically porous carbon materials with interconnected frameworks of macro- and mesopores when pyrolysis is implemented at a low temperature or when DA is a minor component.

A Dewetted-Dealloyed Nanoporous Pt Co-Catalyst Formed on TiO2 Nanotube Arrays Leads to Strongly Enhanced Photocatalytic H2 Production

Pt nanoparticles are typically decorated as co-catalyst on semiconductors to enhance the photocatalytic performance. Due to the low abundance and high cost of Pt, reaching a high activity with minimized co-catalyst loadings is a key challenge in the field. We explore a dewetting-dealloying strategy to fabricate on TiO2 nanotubes nanoporous Pt nanoparticles, aiming at improving the co-catalyst mass activity for H2 generation. For this, we sputter first Pt-Ni bi-layers of controllable thickness (nm range) on highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays, and then induce dewetting-alloying of the Pt-Ni bi-layers by a suitable annealing step in a reducing atmosphere: the thermal treatment causes the Pt and Ni films to agglomerate and at the same time mix with each other, forming on the TiO2 nanotube surface metal islands of a mixed PtNi composition. In a subsequent step we perform chemical dealloying of Ni that is selectively etched out from the bimetallic dewetted islands, leaving behind nanoporous Pt decorations. Under optimized conditions, the nanoporous Pt-decorated TiO2 structures show a>6 times higher photocatalytic H2 generation activity compared to structures modified with a comparable loading of dewetted, non-porous Pt. We ascribe this beneficial effect to the nanoporous nature of the dealloyed Pt co-catalyst, which provides an increased surface-to-volume ratio and thus a more efficient electron transfer and a higher density of active sites at the co-catalyst surface for H2 evolution.

Versatile Aerogels for Sensors

Aerogels are unique solid-state materials composed of interconnected 3D solid networks and a large number of air-filled pores. They extend the structural characteristics as well as physicochemical properties of nanoscale building blocks to macroscale, and integrate typical characteristics of aerogels, such as high porosity, large surface area, and low density, with specific properties of the various constituents. These features endow aerogels with high sensitivity, high selectivity, and fast response and recovery for sensing materials in sensors such as gas sensors, biosensors and strain and pressure sensors, among others. Considerable research efforts in recent years have been devoted to the development of aerogel-based sensors and encouraging accomplishments have been achieved. Herein, groundbreaking advances in the preparation, classification, and physicochemical properties of aerogels and their sensing applications are presented. Moreover, the current challenges and some perspectives for the development of high-performance aerogel-based sensors are summarized.

Quantitative intrinsic auto-cathodoluminescence can resolve spectral signatures of tissue-isolated collagen extracellular matrix

By analyzing isolated collagen gel samples, we demonstrated in situ detection of spectrally deconvoluted auto-cathodoluminescence signatures of specific molecular content with precise spatial localization over a maximum field of view of 300 µm. Correlation of the secondary electron and the hyperspectral images proved ~40 nm resolution in the optical channel, obtained due to a short carrier diffusion length, suppressed by fibril dimensions and poor electrical conductivity specific to their organic composition. By correlating spectrally analyzed auto-cathodoluminescence with mass spectroscopy data, we differentiated spectral signatures of two extracellular matrices, namely human fibrin complex and rat tail collagen isolate, and uncovered differences in protein distributions of isolated extracellular matrix networks of heterogeneous populations. Furthermore, we demonstrated that cathodoluminescence can monitor the progress of a human cell-mediated remodeling process, where human collagenous matrix was deposited within a rat collagenous matrix. The revealed change of the heterogeneous biological composition was confirmed by mass spectroscopy.

Zielinski et al. show that quantitative label-free cathodoluminescence-scanning electron microscopy differentiates spectral signatures of two extracellular matrices. This method can monitor the progress of a smooth muscle cell-mediated remodeling process without using antibodies to enhance the optical signal.

Nanoporous Metallic Networks: Fabrication, Optical Properties, and Applications

Nanoporous metallic networks are a group of porous materials made of solid metals with suboptical wavelength sizes of both particles and voids. They are characterized by unique optical properties, as well as high surface area and permeability of guest materials. As such, they attract a great focus as novel materials for photonics, catalysis, sensing, and renewable energy. Their properties together with the ability for scaling-up evoke an increased interest also in the industrial field. Here, fabrication techniques of large-scale metallic networks are discussed, and their interesting optical properties as well as their applications are considered. In particular, the focus is on disordered systems, which may facilitate the fabrication technique, yet, endow the three-dimensional (3D) network with distinct optical properties. These metallic networks bridge the nanoworld into the macroscopic world, and therefore pave the way to the fabrication of innovative materials with unique optoelectronic properties.
