Designing transition metal-based porous architectures for supercapacitor electrodes: a review

Over the past decade, transition metal (TM)-based electrodes have shown intriguing physicochemical properties and widespread applications, especially in the field of supercapacitor energy storage owing to their diverse configurations, composition, porosity, and redox reactions. As one of the most intriguing research interests, the design of porous architectures in TM-based electrode materials has been demonstrated to facilitate ion/electron transport, modulate their electronic structure, diminish strain relaxation, and realize synergistic effects of multi-metals. Herein, the recent advances in porous TM-based electrodes are summarized, focusing on their typical synthesis strategies, including template-mediated assembly, thermal decomposition strategy, chemical deposition strategy, and host-guest hybridization strategy. Simultaneously, the corresponding conversion mechanism of each synthesis strategy are reviewed, and the merits and demerits of each strategy in building porous architectures are also discussed. Subsequently, TM-based electrode materials are categorized into TM oxides, TM hydroxides, TM sulfides, TM phosphides, TM carbides, and other TM species with a detailed review of their crystalline phase, electronic structure, and microstructure evolution to tune their electrochemical energy storage capacity. Finally, the challenges and prospects of porous TM-based electrode materials are presented to guide the future development in this field.

Linear One-Dimensional Assembly of Metal Nanostructures onto an Asymmetric Peptide Nanofiber with High Persistence Length

Self-assembled peptide fibrils have been used extensively to template the organization of metal nanoparticles in a one-dimensional (1D) array. It has been observed that the formation of the 1D arrays with a width of a single or few nanoparticles (viz. 20 nm diameter) is only possible if the templating fibers have comparable diameters (viz. ≤20 nm). Accordingly, until today, all the peptide-based templates enabling such 1D arrays have very low persistence lengths, a property that depends strongly on the diameter of the template, owing to the inherent flexibility of only a few nanometer-wide fibers. Here, we demonstrate the formation of high persistence length 1D arrays templated by a short self-assembling peptide fibril with an asymmetrically distributed charged surface. The asymmetric nature of the peptide fibril allows charge-dependent deposition of the nanoparticles only to the part of the fiber with complementary charges, and the rest of the fibril surface remains free of nanoparticles. Consequently, fibers with a much higher diameter, which will have a higher persistence length, are able to template single or few nanoparticle-wide 1D arrays. Detailed microscopy, molecular dynamics simulations, and crystal structure analysis provide molecular-level insights into fiber asymmetry and its interactions with diverse nanostructures such as gold and magnetic nanoparticles. This study will afford an alternative paradigm for high persistence length 1D array fabrication comparable to DNA nanotechnology and lithography but with tremendous cost-effectiveness.

Shape-Controlled Self-Assembly of Light-Powered Microrobots into Ordered Microchains for Cells Transport and Water Remediation

Nature presents the collective behavior of living organisms aiming to accomplish complex tasks, inspiring the development of cooperative micro/nanorobots. Herein, the spontaneous assembly of hematite-based microrobots with different shapes is presented. Autonomous motile light-driven hematite/Pt microrobots with cubic and walnut-like shapes are prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, followed by the deposition of a Pt layer to design Janus structures. Both microrobots show a fuel-free motion ability under light irradiation. Because of the asymmetric orientation of the magnetic dipole moment in the crystal, cubic hematite/Pt microrobots can self-assemble into ordered microchains, contrary to the random aggregation observed for walnut-like microrobots. The microchains exhibit different synchronized motions under light irradiation depending on the mutual orientation of the individual microrobots during the assembly, which allows them to accomplish multiple tasks, including capturing, picking up, and transporting microscale objects, such as yeast cells and suspended matter in water extracted from personal care products, as well as degrading polymeric materials. Such light-powered self-assembled microchains demonstrate an innovative cooperative behavior for small-scale multitasking artificial robotic systems, holding great potential toward cargo capture, transport, and delivery, and wastewater remediation.

1D Colloidal chains: recent progress from formation to emergent properties and applications

Integrating nanoscale building blocks of low dimensionality (0D; i.e., spheres) into higher dimensional structures endows them and their corresponding materials with emergent properties non-existent or only weakly existent in the individual building blocks. Constructing 1D chains, 2D arrays and 3D superlattices using nanoparticles and colloids therefore continues to be one of the grand goals in colloid and nanomaterial science. Amongst these higher order structures, 1D colloidal chains are of particular interest, as they possess unique anisotropic properties. In recent years, the most relevant advances in 1D colloidal chain research have been made in novel synthetic methodologies and applications. In this review, we first address a comprehensive description of the research progress concerning various synthetic strategies developed to construct 1D colloidal chains. Following this, we highlight the amplified and emergent properties of the resulting materials, originating from the assembly of the individual building blocks and their collective behavior, and discuss relevant applications in advanced materials. In the discussion of synthetic strategies, properties, and applications, particular attention will be paid to overarching concepts, fresh trends, and potential areas of future research. We believe that this comprehensive review will be a driver to guide the interdisciplinary field of 1D colloidal chains, where nanomaterial synthesis, self-assembly, physical property studies, and material applications meet, to a higher level, and open up new research opportunities at the interface of classical disciplines.

Revealing Reactions between the Electron Beam and Nanoparticle Capping Ligands with Correlative Fluorescence and Liquid-Phase Electron Microscopy

Liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy (LP-TEM) enables real-time imaging of nanoparticle self-assembly, formation, and etching with single nanometer resolution. Despite the importance of organic nanoparticle capping ligands in these processes, the effect of electron beam irradiation on surface-bound and soluble capping ligands during LP-TEM imaging has not been investigated. Here, we use correlative LP-TEM and fluorescence microscopy (FM) to demonstrate that polymeric nanoparticle ligands undergo competing crosslinking and chain scission reactions that nonmonotonically modify ligand coverage over time. Branched polyethylenimine (BPEI)-coated silver nanoparticles were imaged with dose-controlled LP-TEM followed by labeling their primary amine groups with fluorophores to visualize the local thickness of adsorbed capping ligands. FM images showed that free ligands crosslinked in the LP-TEM image area over imaging times of tens of seconds, enhancing local capping ligand coverage on nanoparticles and silicon nitride membranes. Nanoparticle surface ligands underwent chain scission over irradiation times of minutes to tens of minutes, which depleted surface ligands from the nanoparticle and silicon nitride surface. Conversely, solutions of only soluble capping ligand underwent successive crosslinking reactions with no chain scission, suggesting that nanoparticles enhanced the chain scission reactions by acting as radiolysis hotspots. The addition of a hydroxyl radical scavenger, tert-butanol, eliminated chain scission reactions and slowed the progression of crosslinking reactions. These experiments have important implications for performing controlled and reproducible LP-TEM nanoparticle imaging as they demonstrate that the electron beam can significantly alter ligand coverage on nanoparticles in a nonintuitive manner. They emphasize the need to understand and control the electron beam radiation chemistry of a given sample to avoid significant perturbations to the nanoparticle capping ligand chemistry, which are invisible in electron micrographs.

One-dimensional assembly of β-form anhydrous guanine microrods

Biogenic guanine crystals exhibit excellent optical properties owing to their extremely high refractive index. However, there is no report related to the highly-ordered guanine assemblies in the synthetic systems. Herein, β-phase anhydrous guanine (β-AG) microrods were formed in mixed solvents of formamide and water in the presence of small organic molecules such as uric acid, pyrrole (Py), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP). The one-dimensional (1D) assembly of β-AG microrods form spontaneously in water, which is the first reported highly ordered 1D assembly of organic micro- or nanocrystals in the solution. The obtained β-AG microrods obtained in Py system can form reversible 1D assembly in water after being treated in organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone and isopropanol, which have high solubility in water. However, no reversible 1D assembly but only dispersed or aggregated guanine microrods formed in water after similar treatment in the other three organic solvents such as n-hexane, dichloroethane and petroleum ether with low solubility in water. Similar reversible assembly features can also be observed in other three systems, standard system, and NVP and NMP systems. The reversible 1D assemblies of guanine microrods in water and organic solvents with high solubility in water indicate that there is a strong interaction between the (100) planes of β-AG microrods in water. The oriented 1D assembly of guanine microrods with long axes perpendicular to the horizontal magnetic field can form in water under magnetic field.

Ultrasmall Designed Plasmon Resonators by Fused Colloidal Nanopatterning

This work presents a procedure for large-area patterning of designed plasmon resonators that are much smaller than possible with conventional lithography techniques. Fused Colloidal Nanopatterning combines directed self-assembly and controlled fusing of spherical colloidal nanoparticles. The two-step approach first patterns a surface covered with hydrogen silsesquioxane, an electron beam resist, forming traps into which the colloidal gold nanoparticles self-assemble. Second, the patterned nanoparticles are controllably fused to form plasmon resonators of any 2D designed shape. The heights and widths of the plasmon resonators are determined by the diameter of the nanoparticle building blocks, which can be well below 10 nm. By performing the fusing step with UV ozone and heat exposure, we demonstrate that the process is easily scalable to cover large areas on silicon wafers with designed gold nanostructures. The procedure neither requires adhesion layers nor a lift-off process, making it ideally suited for plasmonics, in comparison with regular electron beam lithography. We use monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in scanning transmission electron microscopy and boundary element method simulations to demonstrate that the designed plasmon resonators are directly tunable via the pattern design. We foresee future expansion of this approach for applications such as plasmon-enhanced photocatalysis and for large-scale patterning where chemical, optical, or confinement properties require sub-10 nm metal lines.

Configurations of Nanocubes Floating and Clustering on Liquid Surfaces

The configurations of nanoparticles (NPs) floating on liquid surfaces can be largely affected by the NP shapes in combination with different NP-liquid coupling strengths. Here, the behavior of ligated nanocubes (NCs) on liquid surfaces is studied as an example of such NP floating by analytical methods and molecular dynamics simulations. Depending on the NC-liquid coupling strength, NCs can sit on the liquid surface (weak), be partly immersed in a tilted orientation (intermediate), or be fully immersed except for the top facet (strong). The simulations reveal that configurations of clusters of self-assembled NCs on liquid surfaces can be even more complex and also determined by the NC-liquid and NC-NC coupling strengths, thus providing a rich spectrum of possible superstructures formed.

Mimicking the Structure and Function of Ant Bridges in a Reconfigurable Microswarm for Electronic Applications

In nature, social insects are capable of self-organizing into various sophisticated and functional structures through local communications, which facilitate their cooperative accomplishment of complex tasks that are beyond the capabilities of individuals. Emulating this collective behavior in artificial robotic systems promises benefits in various engineering fields and has been partially realized through elaborate algorithm and physical designs. However, developing a swarm robotic system with group-level functionality at small scales remains a challenge. Herein, a microswarm system that mimics the structure and function of an ant bridge is realized by employing functionalized magnetite nanoparticles, which are paramagnetic and electrically conductive, as the building blocks. Through the application of a programmed oscillating magnetic field, the building blocks are reconfigured into a ribbon-like microswarm, which can perform reversible elongation with a high aspect ratio and, thus, is capable of constructing a conductive pathway for electrons between two disconnected electrodes with the bodies of functionalized nanoparticles. Furthermore, the microswarm is demonstrated to serve as a microswitch, repair broken microcircuits, and constitute flexible circuits, exhibiting a promising future for the practical applications in the electronics field.

Recent advances in one-dimensional assembly of nanoparticles

Compared with 2D or 3D assembly models, 1D assembly of functional nanoparticles (NPs) is more difficult to prepare due to its higher surface energy. Despite the fabrication difficulty, 1D assembly of NPs exhibits many unique properties, and can directionally transport excitons, photons, phonons, etc., which generate great interest in considerable applications in biomedicine, data storage, waveguiding, highly sensitive sensors, color displays, microcircuits and others. The unique features of 1D assembly of NPs can bridge fabrication of NPs with their practical device applications. The aim of this Tutorial Review is to introduce the general mechanisms to assemble NPs in one direction. To achieve 1D assembly of NPs, different kinds of traditional and newly developed assembly strategies will be discussed. Finally, some examples will be demonstrated to illustrate the applications of NP 1D assemblies in the fields of optics, electronics and magnetics.

Dissipative Self-Assembly of Anisotropic Nanoparticle Chains with Combined Electrodynamic and Electrostatic Interactions

Dissipative self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles offers the prospect of creating reconfigurable artificial materials and systems, yet the phenomenon only occurs far from thermodynamic equilibrium. Therefore, it is usually difficult to predict and control. Here, a dissipative colloidal solution system, where anisotropic chains with different interparticle separations in two perpendicular directions transiently arise among largely disordered silver nanoparticles illuminated by a laser beam, is reported. The optical field creates a nonequilibrium dissipative state, where a disorder-to-order transition occurs driven by anisotropic electrodynamic interactions coupled with electrostatic interactions. Investigation of the temporal dynamics and spatial arrangements of the nanoparticle system shows that the optical binding strength and entropy of the system are two crucial parameters for the formation of the anisotropic chains and responsible for adaptive behaviors, such as self-replication of dimer units. Formation of anisotropic nanoparticle chains is also observed among colloidal nanoparticles made from other metal (e.g., Au), polymer (e.g., polystyrene), ceramic (e.g., CeO₂ ), and hybrid materials (e.g., SiO₂ @Au core-shell), suggesting that light-driven self-organization will provide a wide range of opportunities to discover new dissipative structures under thermal fluctuations and build novel anisotropic materials with nanoscale order.

Adsorption of hairy particles with mobile ligands: Molecular dynamics and density functional study

We study models of hairy nanoparticles in contact with a hard wall. Each particle is built of a spherical core with a number of ligands attached to it and each ligand is composed of several spherical, tangentially jointed segments. The number of segments is the same for all ligands. Particular models differ by the numbers of ligands and of segments per ligand, but the total number of segments is constant. Moreover, our model assumes that the ligands are tethered to the core in such a manner that they can "slide" over the core surface. Using molecular dynamics simulations we investigate the differences in the structure of a system close to the wall. In order to characterize the distribution of the ligands around the core, we have calculated the end-to-end distances of the ligands and the lengths and orientation of the mass dipoles. Additionally, we also employed a density functional approach to obtain the density profiles. We have found that if the number of ligands is not too high, the proposed version of the theory is capable to predict the structure of the system with a reasonable accuracy.
