Dynamic Electronic Doping for Correlated Oxides by a Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Self-Reporting Microsensors Inspired by Noctiluca Scintillans for Small-Defect Positioning and Electrical-Stress Visualization in Polymers

Small defects induce concentrated electrical stress in dielectric polymers, leading to premature failure of materials. Existing sensing methods fail to effectively visualize these defects owing to the invisible-energy state of the electric field. Thus, it is necessary to establish a nondestructive method for the real-time detection of small defects in dielectric polymers. In this study, a self-reporting microsensor (SRM) inspired by Noctiluca scintillans is designed to endow materials with the ability of self-detection for defects and electrical stress. The SRM leverages the energy of a nearby electric field to emit measurable fluorescence, enabling defect localization and diagnosis as well as electrical-stress visualization. A controllable dielectric microsphere is constructed to achieve an adjustable electroluminescence threshold for the SRM, thereby increasing its detection accuracy while decreasing the electroluminescence threshold. The potential degradation in the polymer performance owing to SRM implantation is addressed by assembling long molecular chains on the SRM surface to spontaneously generate an interpenetrating network. Results of finite element analyses and experiments demonstrate that the SRM can effectively realize nondestructive visualization and positioning of small defects and concentrated electrical stress in polymers, positioning it as a promising sensing method for monitoring the electric field and charge distribution in materials.

A self-powered intelligent integrated sensing system for sports skill monitoring

The use of green intelligent sensing systems which are based on triboelectric nanogenerators have sparked a surge of research in recent years. The development has made significant contributions to the field of promoting human health. However, the integration of an intelligent sensing system with multi-directional triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) remains challenges in the field of motion monitoring. To solve this research issue, this study designed a self-powered multifunctional fitness blanket (SF-MFB) which incorporates four TENGs, features multi-sensors and wireless motion monitoring capabilities. It presents a self-powered integrated sensing system which utilizes four TENG sensing units to monitor human motion. Each TENG sensing unit collects the mechanical energy generated during motion. The system is composed of SF-MFB, Bluetooth transmission terminal, and upper computer analysis terminal. Its main purpose is to wirelessly monitor and diagnose human sports skills and enables real-time human-computer interaction. The TENG integrated self-powered sensing system demonstrates practicality in sports skills monitoring, diagnosis, human-computer interaction and entertainment. This research introduces a novel approach for the application of TENG self-powered intelligent integrated sensing system in health promotion.

Potentiometric Measurement to Probe Solvation Energy and Its Correlation to Lithium Battery Cyclability

The electrolyte plays a critical role in lithium-ion batteries, as it impacts almost every facet of a battery's performance. However, our understanding of the electrolyte, especially solvation of Li⁺, lags behind its significance. In this work, we introduce a potentiometric technique to probe the relative solvation energy of Li⁺ in battery electrolytes. By measuring open circuit potential in a cell with symmetric electrodes and asymmetric electrolytes, we quantitatively characterize the effects of concentration, anions, and solvents on solvation energy across varied electrolytes. Using the technique, we establish a correlation between cell potential (E_cell) and cyclability of high-performance electrolytes for lithium metal anodes, where we find that solvents with more negative cell potentials and positive solvation energies-those weakly binding to Li⁺-lead to improved cycling stability. Cryogenic electron microscopy reveals that weaker solvation leads to an anion-derived solid-electrolyte interphase that stabilizes cycling. Using the potentiometric measurement for characterizing electrolytes, we establish a correlation that can guide the engineering of effective electrolytes for the lithium metal anode.

Daylight-Induced Metal-Insulator Transition in Ag-Decorated Vanadium Dioxide Nanorod Arrays

Metal-insulator transition (MIT) in strongly correlated electronic materials has enormous potential with scientific and technological impacts in future oxide nanoelectronic devices. Although photo-induced MIT can provide opportunities to extend the novel functionality of strongly correlated electronic materials, there have rarely been reports on it. Here, we report MIT provoked by visible-near-infrared light in Ag-decorated VO₂ nanorod arrays (NRs) because of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and its application to broadband photodetectors. Our simulation results based on the finite-difference time-domain method show that the electric field resulting from LSPR can be generated at the interface between Ag nanoparticles and VO₂ layers under vis NIR illumination. Using high-resolution transmission electronic microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, we observe the MIT and structural phase transition in the Ag-decorated VO₂ NRs due to the LSPR effect. The optoelectronic measurements confirm that high, fast, and broad photoresponse of Ag-decorated VO₂ NRs is attributed to photo-induced MIT due to LSPR. Our study will open up a new strategy to trigger MIT in strongly correlated electronic materials through functionalization with plasmonic nanoparticles and serve as a valuable proof of concept for next-generation optoelectronic devices with fast response, low power consumption, and high performance.
