2D Photonic Colloidal Liquid Crystals Composed of Self-Assembled Rod-Shaped Particles

Photonic crystals, characterized by their periodic structures, have been extensively studied for their ability to manipulate light. Typically, the development of 2D photonic crystals requires either sophisticated equipment or precise orientation of spherical nanoparticles. However, liquid-crystalline (LC) materials offer a promising alternative, facilitating the formation of periodic structures without the need for complex manipulation. Despite this advantage, the development of 2D photonic periodic structures using LC materials is limited to a few colloidal nanodisk liquid crystals. Herein, 2D photonic colloidal liquid crystals composed of biomineral-based nanorods and water is reported. The soft photonic materials with 2D structure by self-assembled LC colloidal nanorods are unique and a new class of photonic materials different from conventional solid 2D photonic materials. These colloids exhibit bright structural colors with high reflectance (>50%) and significant angular dependency. The structural colors are adjusted by controlling the concentration and size of the LC colloidal nanorods. Furthermore, mechanochromic hydrogel thin films with 2D photonic structure are developed. The hydrogels exhibit reversible mechanochromic properties with angular dependency, which can be used for an advanced stimuli responsible sensor.

Photorewriting, Time-Resolved Encryption, and Unclonable Anticounterfeiting with Artificial Intelligence Authentication via a Reversible Photoswitchable System

In the fields of photolithographic patterning, optical anticounterfeiting, and information encryption, reversible photochromic materials with solid-state fluorescence are emerging as a potential class of systems. A design strategy for reversible photochromic materials has been proposed and synthesized through the introduction of photoactive thiophene groups into the molecular backbone of aryl vinyls, compounds with unique aggregation-induced emission properties, and solid-state reversible photocontrollable fluorescence and color-changing properties. This work develops novel photochromic inks, films, and cellulose hydrogels for enhancing the security of information encryption and anticounterfeiting technologies. They achieve rapid and reversible color change under ultraviolet light irradiation. Dependent upon the rate of color change, higher levels of time-resolved security can be achieved. This feature is important for enhancing the confidentiality of encrypted information and the reliability of security labels. Color-changing cellulose hydrogels, inks, and films consisting of three photochromic fluorescent molecules have quick photoactivity, great photoreversibility and photostability, and good processability, making them ideal for time-delayed anticounterfeiting and smart encryption. Furthermore, specialized algorithms are used to construct convolutional neural networks, and image analysis is performed on these systems, thus solving the current problem of the time-consuming information decryption process. This artificial intelligence method offers new opportunities for enhanced data encryption.

Stimulus-responsive nonclose-packed photonic crystals: fabrications and applications

Stimulus-responsive photonic crystals (PCs) possessing unconventional nonclosely packed structures have received growing attention due to their unique capability of mimicking the active structural colors of natural organisms (for example, chameleons' mechanochromic properties). However, there is rarely any systematic review regarding the progress of nonclose-packed photonic crystals (NPCs), involving their fabrication, working mechanisms, and applications. Herein, a comprehensive review of the fundamental principles and practical fabrication strategies of one/two/three-dimensional NPCs is summarized from the perspective of designing nonclose-packed structures. Subsequently, responsive NPCs with exciting functions and working mechanisms are sorted and delineated according to their diverse responses to physical (force, temperature, magnetic, and electric fields), chemical (ions, pH, vapors, and solvents), and biological (glucose, organophosphate, creatinine, and bacteria) stimuli. We then systematically introduced and discussed the applications of NPCs in sensors, printing, anticounterfeiting, display, optical devices, etc. Finally, the current challenges and development prospects for NPCs are presented. This review not only concludes the design principle for NPCs but also provides a significant basis for the exploration of next-generation NPCs.

Photo-and thermo-regulation by photonic crystals for extended longevity of C. elegans

Methods allowing light energy to be modulated in a controllable fashion are potentially important for finding the correlation between light-related environmental factors and aging-related lifespan. Here, we report photo- and thermo-regulation based on photonic crystals (PCs) for extended longevity of C. elegans. We show that PCs can function as a regulator of visible spectrum to tune photonic energy received by C.elegans. We provide direct evidence that lifespan depends on photonic energy, and the use of PCs reflecting blue light (440-537nm) gives 8.3% increasement in lifespan. We demonstrate that the exposure to modulated light alleviates photo-oxidative stress and unfolded-protein response. We realize reflective passive cooling temperature using PCs, and favorable low temperature could be created for worms to extend lifespan. This work offers a new path based on PCs to resist negative effects light and temperature for longevity, provides an available platform for studying the role of light in aging.

Iridescent coating of graphene oxide on various substrates

Two-dimensional nanomaterials have been incorporated into coating layers for exceptional properties in mechanic toughness, electronics, thermology and optics. Graphene oxide (GO), however, was greatly hindered by its strong adsorption within visible wavelength and hereby the intrinsic dark color at the solid state. Herein, we found a unique aqueous mixture of GO containing sodium dodecyl sulfate and l-ascorbic acid. It enabled to produce iridescent coating layers with tunable thickness of 0.3-50 μm on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates (e.g., glass, aluminum foil, polytetrafluoroethylene), through brushing, liquid-casting, dipping and writing. Their iridescence could be further tuned by incorporating MXene nanosheets. And their mechanical properties could be enhanced by certain synthetic polymers (e.g., polyvinyl alcohol and polyethylene glycol). Their sensitivity to heat, laser and water also benefited to pattern the coating layers. Furthermore, by controlling laser intensity, the domain color could be changed (e.g., green to blue). Thus, this study may pave a new pathway of producing iridescent coatings of graphene oxide in a large scale for practical applications.

Multicolor Photonic Pigments for Rotation-Asymmetric Mechanochromic Devices

Photonic crystals are extensively explored to replace inorganic pigments and organic dyes as coloring elements in printing, painting, sensing, and anti-counterfeiting due to their brilliant structural colors, chemical stability, and environmental friendliness. However, most existing photonic-crystal-based pigments can only display monochromatic colors once made, and generating multicolors has to start with designing different building blocks. Here, a novel photonic pigment featuring highly tunable structural colors in the entire visible spectrum, made by the magnetic assembly of monodisperse nanorods into body-centered-tetragonal photonic crystals, is reported. Their prominent magnetic and crystal anisotropy makes it efficient to generate multicolors using one photonic pigment by magnetically controlling the crystal orientation. Further, the combination of angle-dependent diffraction and magnetic orientation control enables the design of rotation-asymmetric photonic films that display distinct patterns and encrypted information in response to rotation. The efficient multicolor generation through precise orientational control makes this novel photonic pigment promising in developing high-performance structural-colored materials and optical devices.

Hierarchically Molecular Imprinted Porous Particles for Biomimetic Kidney Cleaning

Blood purification by adsorption of excessive biomolecules is vital for maintaining human health. Here, inspired by kidney self-purification, which removes a number of biomolecules with different sizes simultaneously, hierarchical molecular-imprinted inverse opal particles integrated with a herringbone microfluidic chip for efficient biomolecules cleaning are presented. The particle possesses combinative porous structure with both surface and interior imprints for the specific recognition of small molecules and biomacromolecules. Additionally, the presence of the herringbone mixer largely improve the adsorption efficiency due to enhanced mixing. Moreover, the inverse opal framework of the particles give rise to optical sensing ability for self-reporting of the adsorption states. These features, together with its reusability, biosafety, and biocompatibility, make the platform highly promising for clinical blood purification and artificial kidney construction.

Diphylleia grayi-Inspired Intelligent Hydrochromic Adhesive Film

Diphylleia grayi-inspired hydrochromic nano/microstructured films have received much attention for its promising smart hydrochromic applications owing to their simple and low-cost but energy-effective strategy. A new type of water-switchable glazing film patterned with various nano/micro air-hole inverse opal arrays is introduced by selectively removing nano/microsphere polystyrene arrays embedded in the surface of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films. Using the significant contrast ratio of the bleaching and the scattering states, we have optimized the switching properties of Mie scattered patterns. As a result, we obtained a single inverse opal layer-embedded PDMS adhesive film with hexagonally close-packed 1 μm air-hole arrays as an optimum scattered film. The differences of diffusive transmittance and optical haze values between the dry and the wet states of the best scattered film reached 44.93% (ΔT_D.T = 59.11-14.18%) and 54.88% (ΔH = 69.42-14.54%), respectively. In addition, using the best-optimized inverse opal layer-embedded PDMS film, we fabricated a perfectly imitated Diphylleia grayi structure for camouflage application and an intelligent hydrochromic window device. The dynamic water modulation of the scattered opaque and nonscattered transparent state of the inverse opal-patterned PDMS adhesive film can provide an advanced platform structure in the area of hydrochromic technology for smart windows, camouflage, and clear umbrellas for rainy days.

Transmittance Tunable Smart Window Based on Magnetically Responsive 1D Nanochains

Smart optical materials are drawing more and more attention because of their wide application in energy conservation, wearable sensors, optical tuning, and medical devices. However, current smart optical materials, including electroresponsive, thermoresponsive, and mechanoresponsive materials, are greatly restricted in practical applications because of their long response time, complicated preparation, and high cost. This study develops a novel, magnetically tunable, smart optical material with swift and high-contrast optical switching based on one-dimensional (1D) Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ nanochains (NCs), which have the large shape anisotropy of the 1D structure and the superparamagnetic properties of Fe₃O₄ particles. The material exhibited a clear transparent state when NCs were arranged parallel to the viewing direction under an applied magnetic field, whereas it showed good shielding effect when the NCs were randomly oriented upon removal of the field. The light transmittance could be dynamically adjusted over the wide range of 20-80% through a small applied magnetic field of 50-100 Oe, which is superior to most of the currently reported systems. This swift, sensitive, and reversible response is attributed to the good responsivity of magnetic NCs. Also, an effective model was proposed to explain the transmittance modulation scheme and forecast its optical potential. The large tunable range and the low triggered field make Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ NCs an advantageous candidate for application in smart windows, optical switchers, and other fields.

3D touchless multiorder reflection structural color sensing display

The development of a lightweight, low-power, user-interactive three-dimensional (3D) touchless display in which a human stimulus can be detected and simultaneously visualized in noncontact mode is of great interest. Here, we present a user-interactive 3D touchless sensing display based on multiorder reflection structural colors (SCs) of a thin, solid-state block copolymer (BCP) photonic crystal (PC). Full-visible-range SCs are developed in a BCP PC consisting of alternating lamellae, one of which contains a chemically cross-linked, interpenetrated hydrogel network. The absorption of a nonvolatile ionic liquid into the domains of the interpenetrated network allows for further manipulation of SC by using multiple-order photonic reflections, giving rise to unprecedented visible SCs arising from reflective color mixing. Furthermore, by using a hygroscopic ionic liquid ink, a printable 3D touchless interactive display is created where 3D position of a human finger is efficiently visualized in different SCs as a function of finger-to-display distance.

Structural Color Materials for Optical Anticounterfeiting

The counterfeiting of goods is growing worldwide, affecting practically any marketable item ranging from consumer goods to human health. Anticounterfeiting is essential for authentication, currency, and security. Anticounterfeiting tags based on structural color materials have enjoyed worldwide and long-term commercial success due to their inexpensive production and exceptional ease of percept. However, conventional anticounterfeiting tags of holographic gratings can be readily copied or imitated. Much progress has been made recently to overcome this limitation by employing sufficient complexity and stimuli-responsive ability into the structural color materials. Moreover, traditional processing methods of structural color tags are mainly based on photolithography and nanoimprinting, while new processing methods such as the inkless printing and additive manufacturing have been developed, enabling massive scale up fabrication of novel structural color security engineering. This review presents recent breakthroughs in structural color materials, and their applications in optical encryption and anticounterfeiting are discussed in detail. Special attention is given to the unique structures for optical anticounterfeiting techniques and their optical aspects for encryption. Finally, emerging research directions and current challenges in optical encryption technologies using structural color materials is presented.

Magnetic Assembly of Nanocubes for Orientation-Dependent Photonic Responses

Close packing is the most favorable manner in colloidal self-assembly, producing superstructures with a limited variety of spatial configurations. This challenge can be overcome by incorporating anisotropic interactions into the assembly process. Using magnetite nanocubes as the building blocks, we show that they can be magnetically assembled into one-dimensional nanochains in an edge-to-edge rather than close-packed face-to-face manner. The cubic shape of the building blocks plays a key role: it decouples the easy magnetization from any of the three geometric axes favoring close packing. Therefore, under magnetic fields, the induced competition between the long-range Zeeman coupling and the short-range dipole-dipole coupling determines the assembly of nanocubes along the [110] directions. The photonic properties of the edge-to-edge configuration are dependent on both chain orientation and viewing angle. Unlike nanosphere assemblies where the strongest diffraction occurs parallel to the chain (or field) direction, the nanocubes allow one to define their long-range periodicity in the plane of a thin film while diffracting light out of the plane, making it particularly useful for applications that desire the achievement of structural colors of sufficient intensity in a film with a minimum thickness. For example, their unique photonic property can be taken advantage of to design "magic" patterns whose rotation is perceived to be opposite to the actual rotational direction of the film. It is difficult to reproduce such unusual optical effects by other means; thereby, many new ways for designing novel security devices are provided. This work reveals the enormous potential of the magnetic assembly strategy, when combined with the use of well-defined nonspherical building blocks, for controlling the spatial configurations of colloidal assemblies and exploiting their novel physical properties for intriguing applications.

Recent Advances in Colloidal Photonic Crystal-Based Anti-Counterfeiting Materials

Colloidal photonic crystal (PC)-based anti-counterfeiting materials have been widely studied due to their inimitable structural colors and tunable photonic band gaps (PBGs) as well as their convenient identification methods. In this review, we summarize recent developments of colloidal PCs in the field of anti-counterfeiting from aspects of security strategies, design, and fabrication principles, and identification means. Firstly, an overview of the strategies for constructing PC anti-counterfeiting materials composed of variable color PC patterns, invisible PC prints, and several other PC anti-counterfeiting materials is presented. Then, the synthesis methods, working principles, security level, and specific identification means of these three types of PC materials are discussed in detail. Finally, the summary of strengths and challenges, as well as development prospects in the attractive research field, are presented.
