Mesoporous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Nanosphere-Supported Isolated Single-Atom Pd Catalyst for Highly Efficient Semihydrogenation of Acetylene

A manganese-oxide nano-rambutan as the intrinsic modifier for hypericin delivery and triple-negative breast cancer treatment

The anti-tumor efficacy of naturally derived photosensitizer-hypericin (Hy) is dampened by hypoxia and over-expressed glutathione in the tumor microenvironment (TME). For rewiring the TME, we encapsulated Hy to an intrinsic modifier-manganese oxide-formed nanorambutan (MnOx-Hy NR). In triple-negative breast cancer cells, MnOx-Hy NR not only consumed glutathione through Mn2+ and hypericin release but also facilitated O2 production to relieve hypoxia, through which the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was strengthened by endoplasmic reticulum targeting hypericin. In the meantime, glutathione consumption-induced glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) inactivation and the elevation of lipid hydroperoxide (LPO) level further triggered ferroptosis. Then, the combination of PDT and ferroptosis contributed to a synergic immunogenic cell death (ICD) effect in 4 T1 cells, facilitating the adaptive anti-tumor immune response activation. Thereby, MnOx-Hy NR exhibited excellent anti-tumor effects both in primary and distant tumors through the abscopal effect, as well as significant lung metastasis inhibition in the 4 T1 mouse metastatic tumor model.

A General Strategy Based on Hetero-Charge Coupling Effect for Constructing Single-Atom Sites

Single-atom catalysts have emerged as cutting-edge hotspots in the field of material science owing to their excellent catalytic performance brought about by well-defined metal single-atom sites (M SASs). However, huge challenges still lie in achieving the rational design and precise synthesis of M SASs. Herein, we report a novel synthesis strategy based on the hetero-charge coupling effect (HCCE) to prepare M SASs loaded on N and S co-doped porous carbon (M1/NSC). The proposed strategy was widely applied to prepare 17 types of M1/NSC composed of single or multi-metal with the integrated regulation of the coordination environment and electronic structure, exhibiting good universality and flexible adjustability. Furthermore, this strategy provided a low-cost method of efficiently synthesizing M1/NSC with high yields, that can produce more than 50 g catalyst at one time, which is key to large-scale production. Among various as-prepared unary M1/NSC (M can be Fe, Co, Ni, V, Cr, Mn, Mo, Pd, W, Re, Ir, Pt, or Bi) catalysts, Fe1/NSC delivered excellent performance for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to NH3 with high NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 86.6 % and high NH3 yield rate of 1.50 mg h-1 mgcat. -1 at -0.6 V vs. RHE. Even using Fe1/NSC as a cathode in a Zn-nitrate battery, it exhibited a high open circuit voltage of 1.756 V and high energy density of 4.42 mW cm-2 with good cycling stability.

Revealing the Effect of the Microstructure on Potassium Storage Behavior in a Two-Dimensional Mesoporous Carbon Anode

Hard carbon is considered as the most promising anode material for potassium-ion energy storage devices. Substantial progress has been made in exploring advanced hard carbons to solve the issues of sluggish kinetics and large volume changes caused by the large radius of K+. However, the relationship between their complicated microstructures and the K+ charge storage behavior is still not fully explored. Herein, a series of two-dimensional mesoporous carbon microcoins (2D-MCMs) with tunable microstructures in heteroatom content and graphitization degree are synthesized by a facile hard-template method and follow a temperature-controllable annealing process. It is found that high heteroatom content makes for surface-driven K+ storage behavior, which increases the capacity-contribution ratio from a high potential region, while a high graphitization degree makes for K+ intercalation behavior, which increases the capacity-contribution ratio from a low potential region. Electrochemical results from a three-electrode Swagelok cell demonstrate that a 2D-MCM anode with more capacity contribution from a low working region allows the porous carbon cathode to be operated in a much wider electrochemical window, thus storing more charge. As a result, potassium-ion capacitors based on the optimized 2D-MCM anode deliver a high energy density of 113 Wh kg-1 and an exhilarating power density of 51,000 W kg-1.

Heteroatoms-Stabilized Single Palladium Atoms on Amorphous Zeolites: Breaking the Tradeoff between Catalytic Activity and Selectivity for Alkyne Semihydrogenation

As a fundamental industrial catalytic process, the semihydrogenation of alkynes presents a challenge in striking a balance between activity and selectivity due to the issue of over-hydrogenation. Herein, we develop an efficient catalytic system based on single-atom Pd catalysts supported on boron-containing amorphous zeolites (Pd/AZ-B), achieving the tradeoff breaking between the activity and selectivity for the selective hydrogenation of alkynes. Advanced characterizations and theoretical density functional theory calculations confirm that the incorporated B atoms in the Pd/AZ-B can not only alter the geometric and electronic properties of Pd atoms by controlling the electron migration from Pd but also mitigate the interaction between alkene and the catalyst supports. This boosts the exceptional catalytic efficacy in the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene to styrene under mild conditions (298 K, 2 bar H2), achieving a recorded turnover frequency (TOF) value of 24198 h-1 and demonstrating 95 % selectivity to styrene at full conversion of phenylacetylene. By comparison, the heteroatom-free amorphous zeolite-anchored Pd nanoparticles and the commercial Lindlar catalyst have styrene selectivities of 73 % and 15 %, respectively, under identical reaction conditions. This work establishes a solid foundation for developing highly active and selective hydrogenation catalysts by controllably optimizing their electronic and steric properties.

Structural Design of Single-Atom Catalysts for Enhancing Petrochemical Catalytic Reaction Process

Petroleum, as the "lifeblood" of industrial development, is the important energy source and raw material. The selective transformation of petroleum into high-end chemicals is of great significance, but still exists enormous challenges. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with 100% atom utilization and homogeneous active sites, promise a broad application in petrochemical processes. Herein, the research systematically summarizes the recent research progress of SACs in petrochemical catalytic reaction, proposes the role of structural design of SACs in enhancing catalytic performance, elucidates the catalytic reaction mechanisms of SACs in the conversion of petrochemical processes, and reveals the high activity origins of SACs at the atomic scale. Finally, the key challenges are summarized and an outlook on the design, identification of active sites, and the appropriate application of artificial intelligence technology is provided for achieving scale-up application of SACs in petrochemical process.

Decoding Active Sites for Highly Efficient Semihydrogenation of Acetylene in Palladium-Copper Nanoalloys

Accurately decoding the three-dimensional atomic structure of surface active sites is essential yet challenging for a rational catalyst design. Here, we used comprehensive techniques combining the pair distribution function and reverse Monte Carlo simulation to reveal the surficial distribution of Pd active sites and adjacent coordination environment in palladium-copper nanoalloys. After the fine-tuning of the atomic arrangement, excellent catalytic performance with 98% ethylene selectivity at complete acetylene conversion was obtained in the Pd34Cu66 nanocatalysts, outperforming most of the reported advanced catalysts. The quantitative deciphering shows a large number of active sites with a Pd-Pd coordination number of 3 distributed on the surface of Pd34Cu66 nanoalloys, which play a decisive role in highly efficient semihydrogenation. This finding not only opens the way for guiding the precise design of bimetal nanocatalysts from atomic-level insight but also provides a method to resolve the spatial structure of active sites.

Electroreduction of CO2 on Cu, Fe, or Ni-doped Diamane Sheets: A DFT Study

Poor mass transfer behavior and inherent activity limit the efficiency of traditional catalysts in electrocatalyzing carbon dioxide reduction reactions. However, the development of novel nanomaterials provides new strategies to solve the above problems. Herein, we propose novel single-metal atom catalysts, namely diamane-based electrocatalysts doped with Cu, Fe, and Ni, explored through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We thoroughly investigated the doping pattern and energetics for different dopants. Furthermore, we systematically investigated the conversion process of CO2 to C1 or C2+ products, utilizing the free energy analysis of reaction pathways. Our results reveal that dopants could only be introduced into diamane following a specific pattern. Dopants significantly enhance the CO2 adsorption ability of diamane, with Fe and Ni proving notably more effective than Cu. After CO2 adsorption, Cu- and Fe-doped diamane prefer to catalyze CO2RR, while Ni-doped diamane favors hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The C-C coupling reaction on Cu-hollow diamane, Cu-bridge diamane, and Fe-hollow diamane tends to be from C2+ products. Among all examined catalysts, Cu-hollow diamane shows better electro-catalytic performance. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of and contributes to the development of diamane-based electro-catalysts for CO2RR.

Potassium regulating electronic state of zirconia supported palladium catalyst and hydrogen spillover for improved acetylene hydrogenation

High-selectivity acetylene hydrogenation to produce ethylene is an important issue of removing acetylene impurity in ethylene for industrial polyethylene production. Developing high-efficiency catalyst with excellent ethylene selectivity and catalytic durability is desirable but still challenging. In this work, potassium doped palladium catalysts supported on zirconia with different K contents (Pd/ZrO2-xK) have been developed to catalyze acetylene hydrogenation, the Pd/ZrO2-16K exhibits impressive catalytic performance with acetylene conversion of 100 %, ethylene selectivity of 81 % and high catalytic durability. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), in situ synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometry (SR-PIMS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that K doping effectively weakens the adsorption of ethylene by regulating the electronic state of catalyst to improve ethylene selectivity and substantially lowers the barriers of hydrogen activation and transfer reactions to favor hydrogen spillover, thus conferring a remarkably improved durability on the Pd/ZrO2-16K catalysts.

Pd-Mn/NC Dual Single-Atomic Sites with Hollow Mesopores for the Highly Efficient Semihydrogenation of Phenylacetylene

The direct pyrolysis of metal-zeolite imidazolate frameworks (M-ZIFs) has been widely recognized as the predominant approach for synthesizing atomically dispersed metal-nitrogen-carbon single-atom catalysts (M/NC-SACs), which have exhibited exceptional activity and selectivity in the semihydrogenation of acetylene. However, due to weak adsorption of reactants on the single site and restricted molecular diffusion, the semihydrogenation of large organic molecules (e.g., phenylacetylene) was greatly limited for M/NC-SACs. In this work, a dual single-atom catalyst (h-Pd-Mn/NC) with hollow mesopores was designed and prepared using a general host-guest strategy. Taking the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene as an example, this catalyst exhibited ultrahigh activity and selectivity, which achieved a turnover frequency of 218 molC═CmolPd-1 min-1, 16-fold higher than that of the commercial Lindlar catalyst. The catalyst maintained high activity and selectivity even after 5 cycles of usage. The superior activity of h-Pd-Mn/NC was attributed to the 4.0 nm mesopore interface of the catalyst, which enhanced the diffusion of macromolecular reactants and products. Particularly, the introduction of atomically dispersed Mn with weak electronegativity in h-Pd-Mn/NC could drive the electron transfer from Mn to adjacent Pd sites and regulate the electronic structure of Pd sites. Meanwhile, the strong electronic coupling in Pd-Mn pairs enhanced the d-electron domination near the Fermi level and promoted the adsorption of phenylacetylene and H2 on Pd active sites, thereby reducing the energy barrier for the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene.

Atomic Three-Dimensional Investigations of Pd Nanocatalysts for Acetylene Semi-hydrogenation

Deciphering the three-dimensional (3D) insight into nanocatalyst surfaces at the atomic level is crucial to understanding catalytic reaction mechanisms and developing high-performance catalysts. Nevertheless, better understanding the inherent insufficiency of a long-range ordered lattice in nanocatalysts is a big challenge. In this work, we report the local structure of Pd nanocatalysts, which is beneficial for demonstrating the shape-structure-adsorption relationship in acetylene hydrogenation. The 5.27 nm spherical Pd catalyst (Pdsph) shows an ethylene selectivity of 88% at complete acetylene conversion, which is much higher than those of the Pd octahedron and Pd cube and superior to other reported monometallic Pd nanocatalysts so far. By virtue of the local structure revelation combined with the atomic pair distribution function (PDF) and reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulation, the atomic surface distribution of the unique compressed strain of Pd-Pd pairs in Pdsph was revealed. Density functional theory calculations verified the obvious weakening of the ethylene adsorption energy on account of the surface strain of Pdsph. It is the main factor to avoid the over-hydrogenation of acetylene. The present work, entailing shape-induced surface strain manipulation and atomic 3D insight, opens a new path to understand and optimize chemical activity and selectivity in the heterogeneous catalysis process.

Encapsulation of Palladium Carbide Subnanometric Species in Zeolite Boosts Highly Selective Semihydrogenation of Alkynes

The selective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is a crucial step in the synthesis of fine chemicals. However, the widely utilized palladium (Pd)-based catalysts often suffer from poor selectivity. In this work, we demonstrate a carbonization-reduction method to create palladium carbide subnanometric species within pure silicate MFI zeolite. The carbon species can modify the electronic and steric characteristics of Pd species by forming the predominant Pd-C4 structure and, meanwhile, facilitate the desorption of alkenes by forming the Si-O-C structure with zeolite framework, as validated by the state-of-the-art characterizations and theoretical calculations. The developed catalyst shows superior performance in the selective hydrogenation of alkynes over mild conditions (298 K, 2 bar H2 ), with 99 % selectivity to styrene at a complete conversion of phenylacetylene. In contrast, the zeolite-encapsulated carbon-free Pd catalyst and the commercial Lindlar catalyst show only 15 % and 14 % selectivity to styrene, respectively, under identical reaction conditions. The zeolite-confined Pd-carbide subnanoclusters promise their superior properties in semihydrogenation of alkynes.

Application of Oxygen-Group-Based Amorphous Nanomaterials in Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

Environmentally friendly energy sources (e.g., hydrogen) require an urgent development targeting to address the problem of energy scarcity. Electrocatalytic water splitting is being explored as a convenient catalytic reaction in this context, and promising amorphous nanomaterials (ANMs) are receiving increasing attention due to their excellent catalytic properties.Oxygen group-based amorphous nanomaterials (O-ANMs) are an important component of the broad family of ANMs due to their unique amorphous structure, large number of defects, and abundant randomly oriented bonds, O-ANMs induce the generation of a larger number of active sites, which favors a better catalytic activity. Meanwhile, amorphous materials can disrupt the inherent features of conventional crystalline materials regarding electron transfer paths, resulting in higher flexibility. O-ANMs mainly include VIA elements such as oxygen, sulfur, selenium, tellurium, and other transition metals, most of which are reported to be free of noble metals and have comparable performance to commercial catalysts Pt/C or IrO2 and RuO2 in electrocatalysis. This review covers the features and reaction mechanism of O-ANMs, the synthesis strategies to prepare O-ANMs, as well as the application of O-ANMs in electrocatalytic water splitting. Last, the challenges and prospective remarks for future development in O-ANMs for electrocatalytic water splitting are concluded.

Enhancing Photocatalytic-Transfer Semi-Hydrogenation of Alkynes Over Pd/C3 N4 Through Dual Regulation of Nitrogen Defects and the Mott-Schottky Effect

The selective hydrogenation of alkynes is an important reaction; however, the catalytic activity and selectivity in this reaction are generally conflicting. In this study, ultrafine Pd nanoparticles (NPs) loaded on a graphite-like C3 N4 structure with nitrogen defects (Pd/DCN) are synthesized. The resulting Pd/DCN exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance in the transfer hydrogenation of alkynes with ammonia borane. The reaction rate and selectivity of Pd/DCN are superior to those of Pd/BCN (bulk C3 N4 without nitrogen defects) under visible-light irradiation. The characterization results and density functional theory calculations show that the Mott-Schottky effect in Pd/DCN can change the electronic density of the Pd NPs, and thus enhances the hydrogenation selectivity toward phenylacetylene. After 1 h, the hydrogenation selectivity of Pd/DCN reaches 95%, surpassing that of Pd/BCN (83%). Meanwhile, nitrogen defects in the supports improve the visible-light response and accelerate the transfer and separation of photogenerated charges to enhance the catalytic activity of Pd/DCN. Therefore, Pd/DCN exhibits higher efficiency under visible light, with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 2002 min-1 . This TOF is five times that of Pd/DCN under dark conditions and 1.5 times that of Pd/BCN. This study provides new insights into the rational design of high-performance photocatalytic transfer hydrogenation catalysts.

Template-Oriented Polyaniline-Supported Palladium Nanoclusters for Reductive Homocoupling of Furfural Derivatives

Developing well-defined structures and desired properties for porous organic polymer (POP) supported catalysts by controlling their composition, size, and morphology is of great significance. Herein, we report a preparation of polyaniline (PANI) supported Pd nanoparticles (NPs) with controllable structure and morphology. The protocol involves the introduction of MnO2 with different crystal structures (α, β, γ, δ, ϵ) serving as both the reaction template and the oxidant. The different forms of MnO2 each convert aniline to a PANI that contains a unique regular distribution of benzene and quinone. This leads to the Pd/PANI catalysts with different charge transfer properties between Pd and PANI, as well as different dispersions of the metal NPs. In this case, the Pd/ϵ-PANI catalyst greatly improves the turnover frequency (TOF; to 88.3 h-1 ), in the reductive coupling of furfural derivatives to potential bio-based plasticizers. Systematic characterizations reveal the unique oxidation state of the support in the Pd/ϵ-PANI catalyst and coordination mode of Pd that drives the formation of highly dispersed Pd nanoclusters. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show the more electron rich Pd/PANI catalyst has the lower energy barrier in the oxidative addition step, which favors the C-C coupling reaction.

Anchoring ultrasmall Pd nanoparticles by bipyridine functional covalent organic frameworks for semihydrogenation of acetylene

Acetylene hydrogenation is a well-accepted solution to reduce by-products in the ethylene production process, while one of the key technical difficulties lies in developing a catalyst that can provide highly dispersed active sites. In this work, a highly crystalline layered covalent organic framework (COF) material (TbBpy) with excellent thermal stability was synthesized and firstly applied as support for ultrasmall Pd nanoparticles to catalyze acetylene hydrogenation. 100% of C2H2 conversion and 88.2% of C2H4 selectivity can be obtained at 120 °C with the space velocity of 70 000 h-1. The reaction mechanism was elucidated by applying a series of characterization techniques and theoretical calculation. The results indicate that the coordination between Pd and N atom in the bipyridine functional groups of COFs successfully increased the dispersibility and stability of Pd particles, and the introduction of COFs not only improved the adsorption of acetylene and H2 onto catalyst surface, but enhanced the electron transfer process, which can be responsible for the high selectivity and activity of catalyst. This work, for the first time, reported the excellent performance of Pd@TbBpy as a catalyst for acetylene hydrogenation and will facilitate the development and application of COFs materials in the area of petrochemicals.

Atomically Dispersed Pd-N1C3 Sites on a Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanosphere for Semi-hydrogenation of Acetylene

Rationally designing efficient catalysts for semi-hydrogenation of acetylene is significant but challenging. Herein, Pd isolated single-atom sites (ISAS) on a covalent-organic-framework (COF)-derived nanosphere (Pd-ISAS/CN) are synthesized by a COF-absorption-pyrolysis strategy. This synthetic strategy is also applicable for Pt and Ru ISAS catalysts, demonstrating that it is a general method to synthesize noble-metal ISAS on COF-derived carbon materials. Pd-ISAS/CN exhibits outstanding reactivity and high selectivity for semi-hydrogenation of acetylene, with 92% conversion of acetylene, 80% selectivity toward ethylene at 100 °C, and corresponding activity is as high as 712 molacetylene molmetal-1 h-1. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurement and density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveal the Pd-N1C3 sites from Pd-ISAS/CN efficiently boost the reactivity for semi-hydrogenation of acetylene. This work will bring inspiration to rationally design noble-metal-based ISAS catalysts derived from COF materials and boost catalytic performance by optimizing the coordination environment of catalytic sites.

Atomic coordination structural dynamic evolution of single-atom Mo catalyst for promoting H2 activation in slurry phase hydrocracking

Development of efficient catalysts with high atomic utilization and turnover frequency (TOF) for H₂ activation in slurry phase hydrocracking (SPHC) is crucial for the conversion of vacuum residue (VR). Herein, for the first time, we reported a robust and stable single atoms (SAs) Mo catalyst through a polymerization-pyrolysis-in situ sulfurization strategy for activating H₂ in SPHC of VR. An interesting atomic coordination structural dynamic evolution of Mo active sites was discovered. During hydrocracking of VR, the O atoms that coordinated with Mo were gradually replaced by S atoms, which led to the O/S exchange process. The coordination structure of the Mo SAs changed from pre-reaction Mo-O₃S₁ to post-reaction Mo-O₁S₃ coordination configurations, promoting the efficient homolytic cleavage activation of H₂ into H radical species effectively. The evolved Mo SAs catalyst exhibited robust catalytic hydrogenation activity with the per pass conversion of VR of 65 wt%, product yield of liquid oils of 93 wt%, coke content of only 0.63 wt%, TOF calculated for total metals up to 0.35 s^-1, and good cyclic stability. Theoretical calculation reveals that the significant variation of occupied Mo 4d states before and after H₂ interaction has a direct bearing on the dynamic evolution of Mo SAs catalyst structure. The lower d-band center of Mo-O₁S₃ site indicates that atomic H diffusion is easy, which is conducive to catalytic hydrogenation. The finding of this study is of great significance to the development of high atom economy catalysts for the industrial application of heavy oil upgrading technology.

The synthesis of single-atom catalysts for heterogeneous catalysis

Heterogeneous catalysis is an important class of reactions in industrial production, especially in green chemical synthesis, and environmental and organic catalysis. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as promising candidates for heterogeneous catalysis, due to their outstanding catalytic activity, high selectivity, and maximum atomic utilization efficiency. The high specific surface energy of SACs, however, results in the migration and aggregation of isolated atoms under typical reaction conditions. The controllable preparation of highly efficient and stable SACs has been a serious challenge for applications. Herein, we summarize the recent progress in the precise synthesis of SACs and their different heterogeneous catalyses, especially involving the oxidation and reduction reactions of small organic molecules. At the end of this review, we also introduce the challenges confronted by single-atom materials in heterogeneous catalysis. This review aims to promote the generation of novel high-efficiency SACs by providing an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the current development in this research field.

Controllable Deposition of Bi onto Pd for Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene

The rational regulation of catalyst active sites at atomic scale is a key approach to unveil the relationship between structure and catalytic performance. Herein, we reported a strategy for the controllable deposition of Bi on Pd nanocubes (Pd NCs) in the priority order from corners to edges and then to facets (Pd NCs@Bi). The spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (ac-STEM) results indicated that Bi₂O₃ with an amorphous structure covers the specific sites of Pd NCs. When only the corners and edges of the Pd NCs were covered, the supported Pd NCs@Bi catalyst exhibited an optimal trade-off between high conversion and selectivity in the hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene under ethylene-rich conditions (99.7% C₂H₂ conversion and 94.3% C₂H₄ selectivity at 170 °C) with remarkable long-term stability. According to the H₂-TPR and C₂H₄-TPD measurements, the moderate hydrogen dissociation and the weak ethylene adsorption are responsible for this excellent catalytic performance. Following these results, the selectively Bi-deposited Pd nanoparticle catalysts showed incredible acetylene hydrogenation performance, which provides a feasible perspective to design and develop highly selective hydrogenation catalysts for industrial applications.

Single-Atom Pd-N4 Catalysis for Stable Low-Overpotential Lithium-Oxygen Battery

The critical challenge for Li-O₂ batteries lies in the large charge overpotential, leading to undesirable side reactions and inferior cycle stability. Single-atom catalysts have shown promising prospects in expediting the kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for Li-O₂ batteries. However, a present practical drawback is the limited understanding of the correlation between the unique atomic structures and the OER mechanism. Herein, a template-assisted strategy is reported to synthesize atomically dispersed Pd anchored on N-doped carbon spheres as cathode catalysts. Benefiting from the well-defined Pd-N₄ moiety, the morphology and distribution of Li₂ O₂ products are distinctly regulated with optimized decomposition reversibility. Theoretical simulations reveal that the unique configuration of Pd-N₄ will contribute to the electron transfer from Pd atoms to the adjacent N atoms, which turns the originally electroneutral Pd into positively charged and downshifts the d-band center and therefore weakens its adsorption energy with the intermediates. The Li-O₂ batteries with Pd SAs/NC cathode achieve a charge overpotential of only 0.24 V and sustainable low-overpotential cycling stability (500 mA g^-1 ), and can retain a low charge voltage to a very high capacity of 10 000 mAh g^-1 . This work provides some insights into designing efficient single-atom catalysts for stable low-overpotential Li-O₂ batteries.

Tailoring of Active Sites from Single to Dual Atom Sites for Highly Efficient Electrocatalysis

Single atom catalysts (SACs) have been attracting extensive attention in electrocatalysis because of their unusual structure and extreme atom utilization, but the low metal loading and unified single site induced scaling relations may limit their activity and practical application. Tailoring of active sites at the atomic level is a sensible approach to break the existing limits in SACs. In this review, SACs were first discussed regarding carbon or non-carbon supports. Then, five tailoring strategies were elaborated toward improving the electrocatalytic activity of SACs, namely strain engineering, spin-state tuning engineering, axial functionalization engineering, ligand engineering, and porosity engineering, so as to optimize the electronic state of active sites, tune d orbitals of transition metals, adjust adsorption strength of intermediates, enhance electron transfer, and elevate mass transport efficiency. Afterward, from the angle of inducing electron redistribution and optimizing the adsorption nature of active centers, the synergistic effect from adjacent atoms and recent advances in tailoring strategies on active sites with binuclear configuration which include simple, homonuclear, and heteronuclear dual atom catalysts (DACs) were summarized. Finally, a summary and some perspectives for achieving efficient and sustainable electrocatalysis were presented based on tailoring strategies, design of active sites, and in situ characterization.

Regulating the Coordination Environment of Mesopore-Confined Single Atoms from Metalloprotein-MOFs for Highly Efficient Biocatalysis

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) exhibit unparalleled atomic utilization and catalytic efficiency, yet it is challenging to modulate SACs with highly dispersed single-atoms, mesopores, and well-regulated coordination environment simultaneously and ultimately maximize their catalytic efficiency. Here, a generalized strategy to construct highly active ferric-centered SACs (Fe-SACs) is developed successfully via a biomineralization strategy that enables the homogeneous encapsulation of metalloproteins within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) followed by pyrolysis. The results demonstrate that the constructed metalloprotein-MOF-templated Fe-SACs achieve up to 23-fold and 47-fold higher activity compared to those using metal ions as the single-atom source and those with large mesopores induced by Zn evaporation, respectively, as well as up to a 25-fold and 1900-fold higher catalytic efficiency compared to natural enzymes and natural-enzyme-immobilized MOFs. Furthermore, this strategy can be generalized to a variety of metal-containing metalloproteins and enzymes. The enhanced catalytic activity of Fe-SACs benefits from the highly dispersed atoms, mesopores, as well as the regulated coordination environment of single-atom active sites induced by metalloproteins. Furthermore, the developed Fe-SACs act as an excellent and effective therapeutic platform for suppressing tumor cell growth. This work advances the development of highly efficient SACs using metalloproteins-MOFs as a template with diverse biotechnological applications.

Emerging single-atom iron catalysts for advanced catalytic systems

Due to the elusive structure-function relationship, traditional nanocatalysts always yield limited catalytic activity and selectivity, making them practically difficult to replace natural enzymes in wide industrial and biomedical applications. Accordingly, single-atom catalysts (SACs), defined as catalysts containing atomically dispersed active sites on a support material, strikingly show the highest atomic utilization and drastically boosted catalytic performances to functionally mimic or even outperform natural enzymes. The molecular characteristics of SACs (e.g., unique metal-support interactions and precisely located metal sites), especially single-atom iron catalysts (Fe-SACs) that have a similar catalytic structure to the catalytically active center of metalloprotease, enable the accurate identification of active centers in catalytic reactions, which afford ample opportunity for unraveling the structure-function relationship of Fe-SACs. In this review, we present an overview of the recent advances of support materials for anchoring an atomic dispersion of Fe. Subsequently, we highlight the structural designability of support materials as two sides of the same coin. Moreover, the applications described herein illustrate the utility of Fe-SACs in a broad scope of industrially and biologically important reactions. Finally, we present an outlook of the major challenges and opportunities remaining for the successful combination of single Fe atoms and catalysts.

Mechanism driven design of trimer Ni1Sb2 site delivering superior hydrogenation selectivity to ethylene

Mechanism driven catalyst design with atomically uniform ensemble sites is an important yet challenging issue in heterogeneous catalysis associated with breaking the activity-selectivity trade-off. Herein, a trimer Ni₁Sb₂ site in NiSb intermetallic featuring superior selectivity is elaborated for acetylene semi-hydrogenation via a theoretical guidance with a precise synthesis strategy. The trimer Ni₁Sb₂ site in NiSb intermetallic is predicted to endow acetylene reactant with an adequately but not excessively strong σ-adsorption mode while ethylene product with a weak π-adsorption one, where such compromise delivers higher ethylene formation rate. An in-situ trapping of molten Sb by Ni strategy is developed to realize the construction of Ni₁Sb₂ site in the intermetallic P6₃/mmc NiSb catalysts. Such catalyst exhibits ethylene selectivity up to 93.2% at 100% of acetylene conversion, significantly prevailing over the referred Ni catalyst. These insights shed new lights on rational catalyst design by taming active sites to energetically match targeted reaction pathway.

Homogeneity of Supported Single-Atom Active Sites Boosting the Selective Catalytic Transformations

Selective conversion of specific functional groups to desired products is highly important but still challenging in industrial catalytic processes. The adsorption state of surface species is the key factor in modulating the conversion of functional groups, which is correspondingly determined by the uniformity of active sites. However, the non-identical number of metal atoms, geometric shape, and morphology of conventional nanometer-sized metal particles/clusters normally lead to the non-uniform active sites with diverse geometric configurations and local coordination environments, which causes the distinct adsorption states of surface species. Hence, it is highly desired to modulate the homogeneity of the active sites so that the catalytic transformations can be better confined to the desired direction. In this review, the construction strategies and characterization techniques of the uniform active sites that are atomically dispersed on various supports are examined. In particular, their unique behavior in boosting the catalytic performance in various chemical transformations is discussed, including selective hydrogenation, selective oxidation, Suzuki coupling, and other catalytic reactions. In addition, the dynamic evolution of the active sites under reaction conditions and the industrial utilization of the single-atom catalysts are highlighted. Finally, the current challenges and frontiers are identified, and the perspectives on this flourishing field is provided.

Self-Adaptive Dirhodium Complexes in a Metal-Organic Framework for Synthesis of N-H Aziridines

Conformational dynamics of active sites in enzymes enable great control over the catalytic process. Herein, we constructed a metal-organic framework with conformationally dynamic active sites (Rh₂-ZIF-8). The active sites in Rh₂-ZIF-8 were composed of the imidazolate-bridged bimetallic center with a catalytic dirhodium moiety and structural zinc site. Even though the coordination sphere of the dirhodium species was saturated with two circularly arranged esp groups and two axial 2-MeIm ligands, it could still effectively catalyze the direct synthesis of N-H aziridines from olefins with high activity. We found that such a self-adaptive catalytic process was based on the dynamic breakage and reformation of the rhodium-zinc imidazolate bridges. Interestingly, the in situ generated dirhodium site with a unique Rh₂(esp)₂(2-MeIm)₁ configuration was able to exhibit obviously enhanced selectivity compared to homogeneous catalyst Rh₂(esp)₂. Furthermore, the surrounding zinc imidazolate groups could effectively protect the dirhodium moieties from harsh environments, and this ultimately endowed it with high stability.

Single-Atom Catalysis: From Simple Reactions to the Synthesis of Complex Molecules

To date, the scope of single-atom catalysts (SAC) in liquid-phase transformations is rather limited owing to stability issues and the inability to activate complex substances. This calls for a better design of the catalyst support that can provide a dynamic coordination environment needed for catalytic action, and yet retain robustness against leaching or aggregation. In addition, the chemical orthogonality of SAC is useful for designing tandem or multicomponent reactions, in which side reactions common to metal nanoparticles are suppressed. In this review, the intrinsic mechanism will be highlighted that controls reaction efficiency and selectivity in SAC-catalyzed pathways, as well as the structural dynamism of SAC under complex liquid-phase conditions. These mechanistic insights are helpful for the development of next-generation SAC systems for the synthesis of high-value pharmaceuticals through late-stage functionalization, sequential and multicomponent strategies.

Atomic Sn-enabled high-utilization, large-capacity, and long-life Na anode

Constructing robust nucleation sites with an ultrafine size in a confined environment is essential toward simultaneously achieving superior utilization, high capacity, and long-term durability in Na metal-based energy storage, yet remains largely unexplored. Here, we report a previously unexplored design of spatially confined atomic Sn in hollow carbon spheres for homogeneous nucleation and dendrite-free growth. The designed architecture maximizes Sn utilization, prevents agglomeration, mitigates volume variation, and allows complete alloying-dealloying with high-affinity Sn as persistent nucleation sites, contrary to conventional spatially exposed large-size ones without dealloying. Thus, conformal deposition is achieved, rendering an exceptional capacity of 16 mAh cm^-2 in half-cells and long cycling over 7000 hours in symmetric cells. Moreover, the well-known paradox is surmounted, delivering record-high Na utilization (e.g., 85%) and large capacity (e.g., 8 mAh cm^-2) while maintaining extraordinary durability over 5000 hours, representing an important breakthrough for stabilizing Na anode.

Promotional effect of ZrO2 and WO3 on bimetallic Pt-Pd diesel oxidation catalyst

Diesel oxidation catalysts Pt-Pd-(y)ZrO₂-(z)WO₃/CeZrO_x-Al₂O₃ with total Pt & Pd loading of only 0.68 wt.% were prepared and investigated for oxidation activity and stability of CO, C₃H₆, and NO. Introduction of ZrO₂ greatly improved low-temperature activities and retained stability especially for CO and C₃H₆ oxidation after treated at 800 °C. With the optimal loading amount of 6 wt% ZrO₂, 2 wt% WO₃ was introduced to the system and showed higher activity. Reaction temperature for 50% CO and C₃H₆ conversion declined to 160 and 181 °C, and the maximal NO conversion increased to 50%. By using XRD, TEM, CO chemisorption, XPS, and H₂-TPR analysis, it was found that ZrO₂ could inhibit aggregation of Pt and Pd, improve metal dispersion, and increase surface-chemisorbed oxygen after high-temperature treatment, accounting for promoted performance. Also, there were more reducible oxide species in ZrO₂-doped catalysts. ZrO₂ could induce reduction of noble metal oxides and surface ceria by weakening Pt-O-Ce interaction, which increased the ability to dissociate H₂ and spillover effect of dissociated hydrogen to ceria. Doping WO₃ increased metal dispersion of fresh samples and brought more Pt⁰ species that were active sites for oxidation reactions. Thus, ZrO₂ and WO₃ could be effective additives for oxidation catalysts to synergistically improve their activities and thermal stability.

Optimizing Microenvironment of Asymmetric N,S-Coordinated Single-Atom Fe via Axial Fifth Coordination toward Efficient Oxygen Electroreduction

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are attractive candidates for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The catalytic performances of SACs are mainly determined by the surrounding microenvironment of single metal sites. Microenvironment engineering of SACs and understanding of the structure-activity relationship is critical, which remains challenging. Herein, a self-sacrificing strategy is developed to synthesize asymmetric N,S-coordinated single-atom Fe with axial fifth hydroxy (OH) coordination (Fe-N₃ S₁ OH) embedded in N,S codoped porous carbon nanospheres (FeN/SC). Such unique penta-coordination microenvironment is determined by cutting-edge techonologies aiding of systematic simulations. The as-obtained FeN/SC exhibits superior catalytic ORR activity, and showcases a half-wave potential of 0.882 V surpassing the benchmark Pt/C. Moreover, theoretical calculations confirmed the axial OH in FeN₃ S₁ OH can optimize 3d orbitals of Fe center to strengthen O₂ adsorption and enhance O₂ activation on Fe site, thus reducing the ORR barrier and accelerating ORR dynamics. Furthermore, FeN/SC containing H₂ O₂ fuel cell performs a high peak power density of 512 mW cm^-2 , and FeN/SC based Znair batteries show the peak power density of 203 and 49 mW cm^-2 in liquid and flexible all-solid-state configurations, respectively. This study offers a new platform for fundamentally understand the axial fifth coordination in asymmetrical planar single-atom metal sites for electrocatalysis.

Pd/Fe2O3 with Electronic Coupling Single-Site Pd-Fe Pair Sites for Low-Temperature Semihydrogenation of Alkynes

Dispersing single palladium atoms on a support is promising to minimize the usage of palladium and improve the selectivity for alkyne semihydrogenation, but its activity is often very low as a result of unfavorable H₂ activation. Here, we load palladium onto α-Fe₂O₃(012) to construct highly active and stable single-site Pd-Fe pairs with luxuriant d-electron domination near the Fermi level driven by strong electronic coupling and prove that Pd-Fe pairs cooperatively adsorb H₂ and dissociate an H─H bond, whereas solo Pd sites enable preferential desorption of C═C intermediate, thus achieving both high activity and high selectivity for alkyne hydrogenation. This catalyst exhibits state-of-the-art performance in purifying acetylene of ethylene stream, with 99.6% and 100% conversion and 96.7% and 94.7% selectivity at 353 and 393 K, respectively, and excellent stability with negligible activity decay after a 200 h test. This single-site pair inherits the advantage but overcomes the weakness of both Pd ensemble and single Pd atoms, enabling ultralow-Pd-loading catalysts for selective hydrogenation.

Adsorption and Reaction Mechanisms of Direct Palladium Synthesis by ALD Using Pd(hfac)2 and Ozone on Si (100) Surface

Palladium nanoparticles made by atomic layer deposition (ALD) normally involve formaldehyde or H2 as a reducing agent. Since formaldehyde is toxic and H2 is explosive, it is advantageous to remove this reducing step during the fabrication of palladium metal by ALD. In this work we have successfully used Pd(hfac)2 and ozone directly to prepare palladium nanoparticles, without the use of reducing or annealing agents. Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to explore the reaction mechanisms of palladium metal formation in this process. DFT results show that Pd(hfac)2 dissociatively chemisorbed to form Pd(hfac)* and hfac* on the Si (100) surface. Subsequently, an O atom of the ozone could cleave the C–C bond of Pd(hfac)* to form Pd* with a low activation barrier of 0.46 eV. An O atom of the ozone could also be inserted into the hfac* to form Pd(hfac-O)* with a lower activation barrier of 0.29 eV. With more ozone, the C–C bond of Pd(hfac-O)* could be broken to produce Pd* with an activation barrier of 0.42 eV. The ozone could also chemisorb on the Pd atom of Pd(hfac-O)* to form O3-Pd(hfac-O)*, which could separate into O-Pd(hfac-O)* with a high activation barrier of 0.83 eV. Besides, the activation barrier was 0.64 eV for Pd* that was directly oxidized to PdOx by ozone. Based on activation barriers from DFT calculations, it was possible to prepare palladium without reducing steps when ALD conditions were carefully controlled, especially the ozone parameters, as shown by our experimental results. The mechanisms of this approach could be used to prepare other noble metals by ALD without reducing/annealing agents.

Atomically Dispersed Co Clusters Anchored on N-doped Carbon Nanotubes for Efficient Dehydrogenation of Alcohols and Subsequent Conversion to Carboxylic Acids

The catalytic dehydrogenation of readily available alcohols to high value-added carbonyl compounds is a research hotspot with scientific significance. Most of the current research about this reaction is performed with noble metal-based homogeneous catalysts of high price and poor reusability. Herein, highly dispersed Co-cluster-decorated N-doped carbon nanotubes (Co/N-CNTs) were fabricated via a facile strategy and used for the dehydrogenation of alcohols with high efficiency. Various characterization techniques confirmed the presence of metallic Co clusters with almost atomic dispersion, and the N-doped carbon supports also enhanced the catalytic activity of Co clusters in the dehydrogenation reaction. Aldehydes as dehydrogenation products were further transformed in situ to carboxylic acids through a Cannizzaro-type pathway under alkaline conditions. The reaction pathway of the dehydrogenation of alcohols was clearly confirmed by theoretical calculations. This work should provide an effective and simple approach for the accurate design and synthesis of small Co-clusters catalysts for the efficient dehydrogenation-based transformation of alcohols to carboxylic acids under mild reaction conditions.

Effectively Regulating More Robust Amorphous Li Clusters for Ultrastable Dendrite-Free Cycling

A disordered phase in Li-deposit nanostructure is greatly attractive, but plagued by the uncontrollable and unstable growth, and the nanoscale characterization in the structure. Here, fully characterized in cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), more robust amorphous-Li (ALi) clusters are revealed and effectively regulated on heteroatom-activating electronegative sites and an advanced solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. Heteroatom-activating electronegative sites capably enhance the electrostatic interaction of Li+ and heteroatom-doping graphene-like film (HDGs), meaning lower Li diffusion barrier and larger binding energy that is confirmed by small nucleation overpotentials of 13.9 and 10 mV at 0.1 mA cm-2 in the fluoroethylene carbonate-adding ester-based (FEC-ester) and LiNO3 -adding ether-based (LiNO3 -ether) electrolytes. Orderly multilayer SEI structure comprised of inorganic-rich components enables fast ion transports and durable capabilities to construct highly reversible and long-term plating/stripping cycling. ALi cluster anodes exhibit non-crystalline morphologies and perform ultrastable dendrite-free cycling over 2800 times. Stable ALi clusters are also grown in LiFePO4 (LFP) (LFP-ALi-HDGs-N||LiFePO4 [LFP]) full cells with advantageous capacities up to 165.5 and 164.3 mAh g-1 in these optimized electrolytes at 0.1 C; the remarkable capacity retentions maintain to 93% and 91% after 150 cycles at 0.2 C. Structure viability, electrochemical reversibility, and excellent performance in ALi clusters are effectively regulated.

Synergizing metal-support interactions and spatial confinement boosts dynamics of atomic nickel for hydrogenations

Atomically dispersed metal catalysts maximize atom efficiency and display unique catalytic properties compared with regular metal nanoparticles. However, achieving high reactivity while preserving high stability at appreciable loadings remains challenging. Here we solve the challenge by synergizing metal-support interactions and spatial confinement, which enables the fabrication of highly loaded atomic nickel (3.1 wt%) along with dense atomic copper grippers (8.1 wt%) on a graphitic carbon nitride support. For the semi-hydrogenation of acetylene in excess ethylene, the fabricated catalyst shows extraordinary catalytic performance in terms of activity, selectivity and stability-far superior to supported atomic nickel alone in the absence of a synergizing effect. Comprehensive characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the active nickel site confined in two stable hydroxylated copper grippers dynamically changes by breaking the interfacial nickel-support bonds on reactant adsorption and making these bonds on product desorption. Such a dynamic effect confers high catalytic performance, providing an avenue to rationally design efficient, stable and highly loaded, yet atomically dispersed, catalysts.
