General Synthesis of Nanoporous 2D Metal Compounds with 3D Bicontinous Structure

Positively Charged Hollow Co Nanoshells by Kirkendall Effect Stabilized by Electron Sink for Alkaline Water Dissociation

While cobalt (Co) exhibits a comparable energy barrier for H* adsorption/desorption to platinum in theory, it is generally not suitable for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) because of unfavorable water dissociation. Here, the Kirkendall effect is adopted to fabricate positive-charged hollow metal Co (PHCo) nanoshells that are stabilized by MoO2 and chainmail carbon as the electron sink. Compared to the zero-valent Co, the PHCo accelerates the water dissociation and changes the rate-determining step from Volmer to Heyrovsky process. Alkaline HER occurs with a low overpotential of 59.0 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Operando Raman and first principles calculations reveal that the interfacial water to the PHCo sites and the accelerated proton transfer are conducive to the adsorption and dissociation of H2O molecules. Meanwhile, the upshifted d-band center of PHCo optimizes the adsorption/desorption of H*. This work provides a unique synthesis of hollow Co nanoshells via the Kirkendall effect and insights to water dissociation on catalyst surfaces with tailored charge states.

Chemical vapor deposition growth of graphene and other nanomaterials with 3D architectures towards electrocatalysis and secondary battery-related applications

Recently, two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), have garnered a lot of attention in energy storage/conversion-related fields due to their novel physical and chemical properties. Constructing flat graphene and TMDCs nanosheets into 3D architectures can significantly increase their exposed surface area and prevent the restacking of adjacent 2D layers, thus dramatically promoting their applications in various energy-related fields. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) is a low-cost, facile, and scalable method, which has been widely employed to produce high-quality graphene and TMDCs nanosheets with 3D architectures. During the CVD process, the morphologies and properties of the 3D architectures of such 2D materials can be designed by selecting substrates with different compositions, stacking geometries, and micro-structures. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in the CVD synthesis of graphene, TMDCs, and their hybrids with 3D architectures on different 3D-structured substrates, as well as their applications in the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and various secondary batteries. In addition, the challenges and future prospects for the CVD synthesis and energy-related applications of these unique layered materials will also be discussed.

Epitaxial Growth of Two-Dimensional Nonlayered AuCrS2 Materials via Au-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition

Two-dimensional (2D) nonlayered transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials are emergent platforms for various applications from catalysis to quantum devices. However, their limited availability and nonstraightforward synthesis methods hinder our understanding of these materials. Here, we present a novel technique for synthesizing 2D nonlayered AuCrS2 via Au-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Our detailed structural analysis reveals the layer-by-layer growth of [AuCrS2] units atop an initial CrS2 monolayer, with Au binding to the adjacent monolayer of CrS2, which is in stark contrast with the well-known metal intercalation mechanism in the synthesis of many other 2D nonlayered materials. Theoretical calculations further back the crucial role of Cr in increasing the mobility of Au species and strengthening the adsorption energy of Au on CrS2, thereby aiding the growth throughout the CVD process. Additionally, the resulting free-standing nanoporous AuCrS2 (NP-AuCrS2) exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Curvature geometry in 2D materials

The two-dimensional (2D) material family can be regarded as the extreme externalization form of the matter in the planar 2D space. These atomically thin materials have abundant curvature structures, which will significantly affect their atomic configurations and physicochemical properties. Curvature engineering offers a new tuning freedom beyond the thoroughly studied layer number, grain boundaries, stacking order, etc. The precise control of the curvature geometry in 2D materials can redefine this material family. Special attention will be given to this emerging field and highlight possible future directions. With the step-by-step achievement in understanding the curvature engineering effect in 2D materials and establishing reliable delicate curvature controlling strategies, a brand-new era of 2D materials research could be developed.

Hydrophobic Nanoporous Silver with ZIF Encapsulation for Nitrogen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) offers a sustainable alternative to the environmentally hazardous Haber-Bosch process for producing ammonia. However, it suffers from an unsatisfactory performance due to its limited active sites and competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, we design a hydrophobic oleylamine-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-coated nanoporous silver composite structure (NPS@O-ZIF). The composite achieves a high ammonia yield of (41.3 ± 0.9) μg·h^-1·cm^-2 and great Faradaic efficiency of (31.7 ± 1.2)%, overcoming the performances of NPS@ZIF and traditional silver nanoparticles@O-ZIF. Our strategy affords more active sites and accessible channels for reactant species due to the porous structure of NPS cores and restrains the evolution of hydrogen by introducing the hydrophobic molecule coated on the ZIF surfaces. Hence, the design of the hydrophobic core-shell composite catalyst provides a valuably practical strategy for ENRR as well as other water-sensitive reactions.

Scalable-doped Nanoporous 1T″ ReSe2 via a General Surface Co-Alloy Strategy

Reliable and controllable doping of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides is an efficient approach to tailor their physicochemical properties and expand their functional applications. However, precise control over dopant distribution and scalability of the process remains a challenge. Here, we report a general method to achieve scalable in situ doping of centimeter-sized bicontinuous nanoporous ReSe₂ films with transition metal atoms via surface coalloy growth. The distinct strains induced by the bending curvature of nanoporous structures and uniform dopants result in a local 1T' to 1T″ structure phase transition over nanoporous ReSe₂ films. The as-prepared nanoporous Ru-ReSe₂ with high 1T″ phase exhibits preferable electrochemical activity in hydrogen evolution reaction. The work demonstrates a unique and general approach to synthesize uniformly-doped transition metal dichalcogenides with 3D bicontinuous nanoporous structure, which can be scaled up to batch production for various applications.

Single-Atom Gold Isolated Onto Nanoporous MoSe2 for Boosting Electrochemical Nitrogen Reduction

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) provides a promising strategy to convert the abundant but inert N₂ into NH₃ using renewable energy. Herein, single-atom Au isolated onto bicontinous nanoporous MoSe₂ (np-MoSe₂ ) is designed as an electrocatalyst for achieving highly efficient NRR catalysis, which exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 37.82% and an NH₃ production rate of 30.83 µg h^-1 mg^-1 at -0.3 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.1 m Na₂ SO₄ under ambient conditions. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the introduction of single Au atoms onto np-MoSe₂ optimizes the adsorption of NRR intermediates while suppressing the competing HER, thus providing an energetic-favorable process for enhancing the catalytic selectivity toward electrochemical N₂ reduction into NH₃ .

Nanoporous B13 C2 towards Highly Efficient Electrochemical Nitrogen Fixation

The electrochemical nitrogen fixation under mild conditions is a promising alternative to the current nitrogen industry with high energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission. Here, a nanoporous boron carbide (np-B₁₃ C₂ ) catalyst is reported for electrochemical nitrogen fixation, which is fabricated by the combination of metallurgical alloy design and chemical etching. The resulting np-B₁₃ C₂ exhibits versatile catalytic activities towards N₂ reduction reactions (NRR) and N₂ oxidation reaction (NOR). A high NH₃ yield of 91.28 µg h^-1 mg_cat.^-1 and Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 35.53% at -0.05 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode are obtained for NRR, as well as long-term stability of up to 70 h, making them among the most active NRR electrocatalysts. This catalyst can also achieve a NO₃^- yield of 165.8 µg h^-1  mg_cat.^-1 and a FE of 8.4% for NOR. In situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations reveal that strong coupling between the BC sites modulates the electronic structures of adjacent B atoms of B₁₃ C₂ , which enables the B sites to effectively adsorb and activate chemical inert N₂ molecules, resulting in lowered energy required by the potential-determining step. Besides, the introduction of carbon can increase the inherent conductivity and reduce the binding energy of the reactants, thus improving N₂ fixation performance.

Rational strain engineering of single-atom ruthenium on nanoporous MoS2 for highly efficient hydrogen evolution

Maximizing the catalytic activity of single-atom catalysts is vital for the application of single-atom catalysts in industrial water-alkali electrolyzers, yet the modulation of the catalytic properties of single-atom catalysts remains challenging. Here, we construct strain-tunable sulphur vacancies around single-atom Ru sites for accelerating the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction of single-atom Ru sites based on a nanoporous MoS₂-based Ru single-atom catalyst. By altering the strain of this system, the synergistic effect between sulphur vacancies and Ru sites is amplified, thus changing the catalytic behavior of active sites, namely, the increased reactant density in strained sulphur vacancies and the accelerated hydrogen evolution reaction process on Ru sites. The resulting catalyst delivers an overpotential of 30 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2, a Tafel slope of 31 mV dec^-1, and a long catalytic lifetime. This work provides an effective strategy to improve the activities of single-atom modified transition metal dichalcogenides catalysts by precise strain engineering.
