Abstract
Frequent oceanic oil spill incidents and the discharge of industrial oily wastewaters have caused serious threats to environments, food chains and human beings. Lignin wastes with many reactive groups exist as the byproducts from bioethanol and pulping processing industries, and they are either discarded as wastes or directly consumed as a fuel. To make full use of lignin wastes and simultaneously deal with oily wastewaters, porous lignin-based composites have been rationally designed and prepared. In this review, recent advances in the preparation of porous lignin-based composites are summarized in terms of aerogels, sponges, foams, papers, and membranes, respectively. Then, the mechanisms and the application of porous lignin-based adsorbents and filtration materials for oil/water separation are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of porous lignin-based composites are proposed in the field of oil/water separation. The utilization of abundant lignin wastes can replace fossil resources, and meanwhile porous lignin-based composites can be used to efficiently treat with oily wastewaters. The above utilization strategy opens an avenue to the rational design and preparation of lignin wastes with high-added value, and gives a possible solution to use lignin wastes in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

Abstract
Bioinspired slippery surfaces (BSSs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their antifouling, drag reduction, and self-cleaning properties. Accordingly, various technical terms have been proposed for describing BSSs based on specific surface characteristics. However, the terminology can often be confusing, with similar-sounding terms having different meanings. Additionally, some terms fail to fully or accurately describe BSS characteristics, such as the surface wettability of lubricants (hydrophilic or hydrophobic), surface wettability anisotropy (anisotropic or isotropic), and substrate morphology (porous or smooth). Therefore, a timely and thorough review is required to clarify and distinguish the various terms used in BSS literature. This review initially categorizes BSSs into four types: slippery solid surfaces (SSSs), slippery liquid-infused surfaces (SLISs), slippery liquid-like surfaces (SLLSs), and slippery liquid-solid surfaces (SLSSs). Because SLISs have been the primary research focus in this field, we thoroughly review their design and fabrication principles, which can also be applied to the other three types of BSS. Furthermore, we discuss the existing BSS fabrication methods, smart BSS systems, antifouling applications, limitations of BSS, and future research directions. By providing comprehensive and accurate definitions of various BSS types, this review aims to assist researchers in conveying their results more clearly and gaining a better understanding of the literature.

Abstract
Developing advanced oil-water separation technology is significant for environmental conservation. According to the synergetic effects of the size-sieving mechanism, superwetting materials with small pore sizes have been designed to realize high-efficiency separation for oil-water emulsions. However, the separation flux limited by the pore size and the weakness of the superwetting material impede its practical application severely. Herein, we construct a robust Janus superwetting textile with large pore sizes for oil-in-water emulsion separation. The pristine textile is coated by the as-prepared CuO nanoparticles as the bottom layer with superhydrophilicity and then grafted by 1-octadecanethiol as the top layer with superhydrophobicity to construct the Janus textile. When used as a filter, the superhydrophobic layer acts as the nucleation site to coalesce the small oil droplets facilely. Then, the coalesced oil fills the pores of the superhydrophobic layer and selectively permeates it but is blocked by the superhydrophilic layer with large pore sizes. Utilizing the unique separation mechanism, the Janus textile realizes efficient and rapid separation. Even after multicycle separation, hot liquid immersion for 24 h, tribological test for 60 min, and sandpaper abrasion for 500 cycles, the Janus textile still retains the superwettability and excellent separation performance, manifesting outstanding stability to resist severe damage. This separation strategy provides a novel guideline for high-efficiency and high-flux emulsion separation and practical application.

Abstract
Surfaces with underoil superhydrophilic (UOSHL) and underwater superoleophobic (UWOHB) have great potential for on-demand emulsion separation. However, the fabrication of underoil superhydrophilic based on wetting thermodynamic principles is quite challenging. Several previous studies have shown that some sarcocarps are able to spontaneously absorb water to moisturize themselves and have a unique UOSHL ability. By mimicking this unique ability of the sarcocarp, an outstanding UWOHB and UOSHL membrane was prepared. We choose 2300 mesh stainless steel mesh (SSM) as the substrate, then grow Cu and Cu(OH)2 on SSM by a simple electrochemical method, and finally grow HKUST-1 crystals via a fast in situ growth method. The whole preparation process is simple, low cost, and does not require complex and long-term hydrothermal reactions. By growing HKUST-1 crystals, the prepared surface successfully achieved the required UOSHL and UWOHB properties. When the water droplets come into contact with the membrane under n-hexane, it will diffuse and can completely spread out in 2 s. The as-prepared membrane exhibits outstanding anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties for rapeseed oil and crude oil with high viscosity underwater due to the special wetting. By prewetting the surface with an appropriate amount of the dispersion medium, it can rapidly and efficiently on-demand separate different emulsions. The separation efficiencies of water-in-oil emulsions and oil-in-water emulsions are above 99.00 and 97.00%. With their outstanding performance in self-cleaning, on-demand emulsion separation, low cost, and fast preparation, the as-prepared UOSHL and UWOHB HKUST-1 meshes show excellent potential for treating oily wastewater in practical applications.

Abstract
To alleviate the economic and environmental damage caused by industrial discharges of oily wastewater, materials applied for efficient oil/water separation are receiving significant attention from researchers and engineers. Among others, switchable wettable materials for bidirectional oil/water separation show great potential for practical applications. Inspired by mussels, we utilized a simple immersion method to construct a polydopamine (PDA) coating on a peony-like copper phosphate surface. Then, TiO2 was deposited on the PDA coating surface to build a micro-nano hierarchical structure, which was modified with octadecanethiol (ODT) to obtain a switchable wettable peony-like superhydrophobic surface. The water contact angle of the obtained superhydrophobic surface reached 153.5°, and the separation efficiency was as high as 99.84% with a flux greater than 15,100 L/(m2·h) after 10 separation cycles for a variety of heavy oil/water mixtures. Notably, the modified membranes have a unique photoresponsiveness, transforming to superhydrophilic upon ultraviolet irradiation, achieving separation efficiencies of up to 99.83% and separation fluxes greater than 32,200 L/(m2·h) after 10 separation cycles for a variety of light oil/water mixtures. More importantly, this switch behavior is reversible, and the high hydrophobicity can be restored after heating to achieve efficient separation of heavy oil/water mixtures. In addition, the prepared membranes can maintain high hydrophobicity under acid-base conditions and after 30 sandpaper abrasion cycles, and damaged membranes can be restored to superhydrophobicity after a brief modification in the ODT solution. This simple-to-prepare, easy-to-repair, robust membrane with switchable wettability shows great potential in the field of oil/water separation.

Abstract
Suitable relative humidity is essential for the preservation of cultural relics, food storage, and so on. A special material that can regulate the relative humidity in the microenvironment is particularly important. In this work, several innovative electrospun films with reversible photoresponsive wettability and the ability to regulate microenvironmental relative humidity were prepared. The spiropyran unit of the synthesized copolymer played the most important role in humidity regulation due to its reversible transition between a nonpolar ring-closed state and a polar ring-opened state induced by alternating ultraviolet/visible illumination. More interestingly, the introduction of acrylic acid segments exhibited a controllable hydrogen bond synergistic effect for increasing the range of humidity regulation. The color change and the reversible change ranges of wettability and microenvironmental relative humidity under ultraviolet/visible irradiation are all closely related to the number of acrylic acid segments. Cassie theory, density functional theory (DFT), and interaction region indicator (IRI) analysis were used to characterize this phenomenon. Electrospinning is a promising method to achieve large-scale production that can put such material into practical applications.

Abstract
The research on superwetting surfaces with a self-healing function against various damages has progressed rapidly in the recent decade. They are expected to be an effective approach to increasing the durability and application robustness of superwetting materials. Various methods and material systems have been developed to prepare self-healing superwetting surfaces, some of which mimic natural superwetting surfaces. However, they still face challenges, such as being workable only for specific damages, external stimulation to trigger the healing process, and poor self-healing ability in the water, marine, or biological systems. There is a lack of fundamental understanding as well. This article comprehensively reviews self-healing superwetting surfaces, including their fabrication strategies, essential rules for materials design, and self-healing properties. Self-healing triggered by different external stimuli is summarized. The potential applications of self-healing superwetting surfaces are highlighted. This article consists of four main sections: (1) the functional surfaces with various superwetting properties, (2) natural self-healing superwetting surfaces (i.e., plants, insects, and creatures) and their healing mechanism, (3) recent research development in various self-healing superwetting surfaces, their preparation, wetting properties in the air or liquid media, and healing mechanism, and (4) the prospects including existing challenges, our views and potential solutions to the challenges, and future research directions.

Abstract
Low-cost and sustainable superwetting materials are urgently required for oily wastewater treatment. Many poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based materials have been designed for oil-water separation. However, their fabrication processes frequently require toxic organic solvents and high-cost materials (e.g., carbon tubes and graphene). In this study, a highly porous and superhydrophobic bamboo powders (BP)-enhanced PVDF foam (SBPF) was fabricated via an organic solvent-free process. The SBPF exhibits efficient adsorption and recovery for various oils and organic solvents. Moreover, the SBPF shows high adsorption and separation performance under ultraviolet exposure and turbulent environments. It can also be used for water-in-oil emulsions separation, with a high separation efficiency more than 99.3 % under gravity. Interestingly, the amphiphilic PVDF-BP foam (ABPF) shows underwater superoleophobicity and underoil superhydrophobicity after delignification of SBPF. Owing to the conversion of wettability, it presents a high performance in treatment of both surfactant-stabilied water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions with the high separation efficiency achieving more than 99.6 % and 99.5 % respectively under gravity. In addition, the ABPF shows a high separation performance even after ten cycles. Hence, this fabricated organic solvent-free foams are promising candidates for sustainable on-demand separation of oils or organic solvents and water in complex environments.

Abstract
Since superwetting surfaces have emerged, on-demand oil/water separation materials serve as a new direction for meeting practical needs. This new separation mode uses a single porous material to allow oil-removing and water-removing to be achieved alternately. In this review, the fundamentals of wettability are systematically summarized in oil/water separation. Most importantly, the two states, bioinspired surface and intelligent surface, are summarized for on-demand oil/water separation. Specifically, bioinspired surfaces include micro/nanostructures, bioinspired chemistry, Janus-featured surfaces, and dual-superlyophobic surfaces that these superwetting materials can possess asymmetric wettability in one structure system or opposite underliquid wettability by prewetting. Furthermore, an intelligent surface can be adopted by various triggers such as pH, thermal and photo stimuli, etc., to control wettability for switchable oil/water separation reversibly, expressing a thought beyond nature to realize innovative oil/water separation by external stimuli. Remarkably, this review also discusses the advantages of all the materials mentioned above, expanding the separation scope from the on-demand oil/water mixtures to the multiphase immiscible liquid-liquid mixtures. Finally, the prospects of on-demand oil/water separation materials are also concluded.

Abstract
Studies which regulate macroscopic wetting states on determined surfaces in multiphase media are of far-reaching significance but are still in the preliminary stage. Herein, inspired by the wettability subassembly of fish scales, Namib desert beetle shell, and lotus leaf upper side, interfaces in the air-water-oil system are programmed by defect engineering to tailor the anti-wetting evolution from double to triple liquid repellency states. By controlling the visible light irradiation and plasma treatment, surface oxygen vacancies on CuxO@TiO2 nanowires (NWs) can be healed or reconstructed. The original membrane or the membrane after plasma treatment possesses abundant surface oxygen vacancies, and the homogeneous hydrophilic membrane shows only double anti-wetting states in the water-oil system. By the unsaturated visible light irradiation time, the surface oxygen vacancy partially healed, the heterogeneous hydrophilic-hydrophobic components occupied the membrane surface, and the anti-wetting state finally changed from double to triple in the air-water-oil system. After the illumination time reaches saturation, it promotes the healing of all surface oxygen vacancies, and the membrane surface only contains uniform hydrophobic components and only maintains double anti-wetting state in the air-oil system. The mechanism of the triple anti-wetting state on a heterogeneous surface is expounded by establishing a wetting model. The wetting state and the adhesion state of the CuxO@TiO2 NW membrane show regional specificity by controlling the illumination time and region. The underwater oil droplets exhibit the "non-adhesive" and "adhesive" state in a region with unsaturated irradiation time or in an unirradiated region, respectively. Underwater oil droplet manipulation can be accomplished easily based on switchable wettability and adhesion. Current studies reveal that defect engineering can be extended to anti-wetting evolution in the air-water-oil system. Constructing an anti-wetting interface by heterogeneous components provides reference for designing the novel anti-wetting interface.

Abstract
A membrane with superamphiphilicity presents many advantages in various oil/water separation applications due to its switchable wettability by prewetting. However, it is still a great challenge to switch between two types of superwettability on a single cellulose surface by switching between different liquid media. Herein, in order to obtain in-air superamphiphilic and under-liquid dual superlyophobic membranes, dopamine-modified nitrocellulose membranes (with a pore size of 0.22 μm) were prepared via a facile immersion modification approach. Under 0.08 MPa, the as-prepared NC membrane switches wettability by prewetting to achieve on-demand oil/water separation, and the separation efficiency is more than 99.9%. Futhermore, the membrane prepared in this work can also be applied to high-efficiency on-demand separation of surfactant-stabilized emulsions with a separation efficiency greater than 99.0%. Hence, the PDA-modified NC membrane is a promising controllable oil/water separation material in terms of repeatable cycles, separation efficiency, flux, prominent long-term durability and anti-oil fouling.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive surfaces with wettability change between superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic are susceptible to oil contamination which often ruins the surface. Herein, a coating with pH-switchable wettability transition between superamphiphobic and superhydrophilic-superoleophobic is achieved by rationally designing oleophobic/pH-responsive polymer heterogeneous chemistry. Fabrics modified with this coating show repellency to both water and oils, while upon exposure to acidic water (pH = 1) the fabrics change to be superhydrophilic-superoleophobic within a short response time of <5 s. More importantly, the superamphiphobicity of the fabric can be restored under mild alkaline condition (pH = 10), and the transition is reversible for many cycles. The effective in situ or ex situ wettability change under acidic/alkaline water treatment makes the coated fabric capable of separating oil-water mixture or even some mixtures of immiscible organic solvents. In addition, the coated fabric is also demonstrated to be promising as a new class of functional fabrics that provide protection against water and many oils in one condition, and can change to be hygroscopic, anti-static, oil-repellent and anti-oil-fouling in the other condition for improved wear comfort and self-cleaning.
