Tip-Enhanced Electric Field: A New Mechanism Promoting Mass Transfer in Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Coordination Engineering of Carbon Dots and Mn in Co-Based Phosphides for Highly Efficient Seawater Splitting at Ampere-Level Current Density

Direct electrolysis of seawater to generate hydrogen is an attractive approach for storing renewable energy. However, direct seawater splitting suffers from low current density and limited operating stability, which severely hinders its industrialization. Herein, a promising strategy is reported to obtain a nano needle-like array catalyst-CDs-Mn-CoxP on nickel foam, in which the Mn─O─C bond tightly binds Mn, Carbon dots (CDs), and CoxP together. The coordination engineering of CDs and Mn not only effectively regulates the electronic structure of CoxP, but also endows the as-prepared catalyst with selectivity and marked long-term stability at ampere-level current density. Low overpotentials of 208 and 447 mV are required to achieve 1000 mA cm-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in simulated seawater, respectively. Cell potentials of 1.78 and 1.86 V are needed to reach 500 and 1000 mA cm-2 in alkaline seawater along with excellent durability for 350 h. DFT studies have verified that the introduction of Mn and CDs effectively shifts the d-band center of Co-3d toward higher energy, thereby strengthening the adsorption of intermediates and enhancing the catalytic activity. This study sheds light on the development of highly effective and stable catalysts for large-scale seawater electrolysis.

Local hydroxide ion enrichment at the inner surface of lacunaris perovskite nanotubes facilitates the oxygen evolution reaction

Numerous strategies have been devised to optimize the intrinsic activity of perovskite oxides for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, conventional synthetic routes typically yield limited numbers of active sites and low mass activities. More critically, the sluggish mass transfer poses a huge challenge, particularly under high polarization conditions, which impedes the overall reaction kinetics. Herein, lacunaris La0.5Pr0.25Ba0.25Co0.8Ni0.2O3-δ nanotubes (LPBCN-NTs) were prepared via electrospinning and post-annealing, which exhibited a small overpotential of 358.8 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a lower Tafel slope of 71.46 mV dec-1, superior to the values for the same stoichiometric LPBCN nanoparticles and solid nanofibers, state-of-the-art counterparts and commercial IrO2. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the surface oxygen vacancies in LPBCN-NTs significantly lowered the OH- adsorption energy, while finite element analysis indicated that the precisely constructed lacunaris NT structure enriched the OH- concentration at its inner surface by an order of magnitude, both of which collectively resulted in accelerated OER kinetics. This study clarifies the underlying mechanism of how the lacunaris nanotubular architecture and the surface oxygen vacancies of perovskite oxides affect heterocatalysis, which undoubtedly paves the way to handling the long-standing issues of sluggish mass transfer rates and poor intrinsic catalytic activity.

Magnetically Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Mild Alkaline Electrolytes by Building Catalysts on Magnetic Frame

Under large current densities, the excessive hydroxide ion (OH) consumption hampers alkaline water splitting involving the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). High OH concentration (≈30 wt.%) is often used to enhance the catalytic activity of OER, but it also leads to higher corrosion in practical systems. To achieve higher catalytic activity in low OH concentration, catalysts on magnetic frame (CMF) are built to utilize the local magnetic convection induced from the host frame's magnetic field distributions. This way, a higher reaction rate can be achieved in relatively lower OH concentrations. A CMF model system with catalytically active CoFeOx nanograins grown on the magnetic Ni foam is demonstrated. The OER current of CoFeOx@NF receives ≈90% enhancement under 400 mT (900 mA cm-2 at 1.65 V) compared to that in zero field, and exhibits remarkable durability over 120 h. As a demonstration, the water-splitting performance sees a maximum 45% magnetic enhancement under 400 mT in 1 m KOH (700 mA cm-2 at 2.4 V), equivalent to the concentration enhancement of the same electrode in a more corrosive 2 m KOH electrolyte. Therefore, the catalyst-on-magnetic-frame strategy can make efficient use of the catalysts and achieve higher catalytic activity in low OH concentration by harvesting local magnetic convection.

Field-Effect Enhancement of Non-Faradaic Processes at Interfaces Governs Electrocatalytic Water Splitting Activity

Recognizing the essential factor governing interfacial hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) is central to electrocatalytic water-splitting. Traditional strategies aiming at enhancing electrocatalytic activities have mainly focused on manipulating active site valencies or coordination environments. Herein, the role of interfacial adsorption is probed and modulated by the topological construct of the electrocatalyst, a frequently underestimated non-Faradaic mechanism in the dynamics of electrocatalysis. The engineered Co0.75Fe0.25P nanorods, anchored with FeOx clusters, manifest a marked amplification of the surface electric field, thus delivering a substantially improved bifunctional electrocatalytic performance. In alkaline water splitting anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer, the current density of 1.0 A cm-2 can be achieved at a cell voltage of only 1.73 V for the FeOx@Co0.75Fe0.25P|| FeOx@Co0.75Fe0.25P pairs for 120 h of continuous operation at 1.0 A cm-2. Detailed investigations of electronic structures, combined with valence state and coordination geometry assessments, reveal that the enhancement of catalytic behavior in FeOx@Co0.75Fe0.25P is chiefly attributed to the strengthened adsorptive interactions prompted by the intensified electric field at the surface. The congruent effects observed in FeOx-cluster-decorated Co0.75Fe0.25P nanosheets underscore the ubiquity of this effect. The results put forth a compelling proposition for leveraging interfacial charge densification via deliberate cluster supplementation.

Co-doped NiFe carbonate hydroxide hydrate nanosheets with edge effect constructed from spent lithium-ion battery ternary cathodes for oxygen evolution reaction

The recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has received increasing attention for environment and resource reclamation. Converting LIBs wastes into high-efficiency catalysts is a win-win strategy for realizing resource reclamation and addressing sustainable energy challenges. Herein, we developed a simple method to upcycle spent-LIBs cathode powder into Co-doped NiFe carbonate hydroxide hydrate (Co/NFCH-FF) as a low-cost and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst. The optimized Co/NFCH-FF electrode appears very competitive OER performances with low overpotentials of 201 and 249 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, a small Tafel slope of 48.4 mV dec-1, and a high long-term stability. Moreover, we reveal that the existence of Co atoms leads to the formation of a crystalline/amorphous (c/a) interface at the Co/NFCH nanosheet edge, inducing the nanosheets possess a unique edge effect to enhance electric fields and accumulate hydroxide ions (OH-) at the edge during the OER process. Benefiting from edge effect, Co/NFCH-FF shows outstanding intrinsic activity. Furthermore, Co atoms as dopants stabilize the electronic structure of Co/NFCH-FF, enabling Co/NFCH-FF to exhibit excellent catalytic stability. This work provides an effective strategy for converting the end-life LIBs to high-performance multicomponent OER electrocatalysts and proposes new insights into the mechanism of enhanced catalytic activity of Co/NFCH.

Curved Structure Regulated Single Metal Sites for Advanced Electrocatalytic Reactions

Curved surface with defined local electronic structures and regulated surface microenvironments is significant for advanced catalytic engineering. Since single-atom catalysts are highly efficient and active, they have attracted much attention in recent years. The curvature carrier has a significant effect on the electronic structure regulation of single-atom sites, which effectively promote the catalytic efficiency. Here, the effect of the curvature structure with exposed metal atoms for catalysis is comprehensively summarized. First, the substrates with curvature features are reviewed. Second, the applications of single-atom catalysts containing curvature in a variety of different electrocatalytic reactions are discussed in depth. The impact of curvature effects in catalytic reactions is further analyzed. Finally, prospects and suggestions for their application and future development are presented. This review paves the way for the construction of high curvature-containing surface carriers, which is of great significance for single-atom catalysts development.

Ceria-Optimized Oxygen-Species Exchange in Hierarchical Bimetallic Hydroxide for Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

The utilization of rare earth elements to regulate the interaction between catalysts and oxygen-containing species holds promising prospects in the field of oxygen electrocatalysis. Through structural engineering and adsorption regulation, it is possible to achieve high-performance catalytic sites with a broken activity-stability tradeoff. Herein, this work fabricates a hierarchical CeO2/NiCo hydroxide for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This material exhibits superior overpotentials and enhanced stability. Multiple potential-dependent experiments reveal that CeO2 promotes oxygen-species exchange, especially OH- ions, between catalyst and environment, thereby optimizing the redox transformation of hydroxide and the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates during OER. This is attributed to the reduction in the adsorption energy barrier of Ni to *OH facilitated by CeO2, particularly the near-interfacial Ni sites. The less-damaging adsorbate evolution mechanism and the CeO2 hierarchical shell significantly enhance the structural robustness, leading to exceptional stability. Additionally, the observed "self-healing" phenomenon provides further substantiation for the accelerated oxygen exchange. This work provides a neat strategy for the synthesis of ceria-based complex hollow electrocatalysts, as well as an in-depth insight into the co-catalytic role of CeO2 in terms of oxygen transfer.

Energy-saving hydrogen production by seawater electrolysis coupling tip-enhanced electric field promoted electrocatalytic sulfion oxidation

Hydrogen production by seawater electrolysis is significantly hindered by high energy costs and undesirable detrimental chlorine chemistry in seawater. In this work, energy-saving hydrogen production is reported by chlorine-free seawater splitting coupling tip-enhanced electric field promoted electrocatalytic sulfion oxidation reaction. We present a bifunctional needle-like Co3S4 catalyst grown on nickel foam with a unique tip structure that enhances the kinetic rate by improving the current density in the tip region. The assembled hybrid seawater electrolyzer combines thermodynamically favorable sulfion oxidation and cathodic seawater reduction can enable sustainable hydrogen production at a current density of 100 mA cm-2 for up to 504 h. The hybrid seawater electrolyzer has the potential for scale-up industrial implementation of hydrogen production by seawater electrolysis, which is promising to achieve high economic efficiency and environmental remediation.

Coupling Nano and Atomic Electric Field Confinement for Robust Alkaline Oxygen Evolution

The alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a promising avenue for producing clean fuels and storing intermittent energy. However, challenges such as excessive OH- consumption and strong adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates hinder the development of alkaline OER. In this study, we propose a cooperative strategy by leveraging both nano-scale and atomically local electric fields for alkaline OER, demonstrated through the synthesis of Mn single atom doped CoP nanoneedles (Mn SA-CoP NNs). Finite element method simulations and density functional theory calculations predict that the nano-scale local electric field enriches OH- around the catalyst surface, while the atomically local electric field improves *O desorption. Experimental validation using in situ attenuated total reflection infrared and Raman spectroscopy confirms the effectiveness of the nano-scale and atomically electric fields. Mn SA-CoP NNs exhibit an ultra-low overpotential of 189 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and stable operation over 100 hours at ~100 mA cm-2 during alkaline OER. This innovative strategy provides new insights for enhancing catalyst performance in energy conversion reactions.

Self-Reporting Microsensors Inspired by Noctiluca Scintillans for Small-Defect Positioning and Electrical-Stress Visualization in Polymers

Small defects induce concentrated electrical stress in dielectric polymers, leading to premature failure of materials. Existing sensing methods fail to effectively visualize these defects owing to the invisible-energy state of the electric field. Thus, it is necessary to establish a nondestructive method for the real-time detection of small defects in dielectric polymers. In this study, a self-reporting microsensor (SRM) inspired by Noctiluca scintillans is designed to endow materials with the ability of self-detection for defects and electrical stress. The SRM leverages the energy of a nearby electric field to emit measurable fluorescence, enabling defect localization and diagnosis as well as electrical-stress visualization. A controllable dielectric microsphere is constructed to achieve an adjustable electroluminescence threshold for the SRM, thereby increasing its detection accuracy while decreasing the electroluminescence threshold. The potential degradation in the polymer performance owing to SRM implantation is addressed by assembling long molecular chains on the SRM surface to spontaneously generate an interpenetrating network. Results of finite element analyses and experiments demonstrate that the SRM can effectively realize nondestructive visualization and positioning of small defects and concentrated electrical stress in polymers, positioning it as a promising sensing method for monitoring the electric field and charge distribution in materials.

Silver Nanowires-Based Flexible Gold Electrode Overcoming Interior Impedance of Nanomaterial Electrodes

In the development of nanomaterial electrodes for improved electrocatalytic activity, much attention is paid to the compositions, lattice, and surface morphologies. In this study, a new concept to enhance electrocatalytic activity is proposed by reducing impedance inside nanomaterial electrodes. Gold nanodendrites (AuNDs) are grown along silver nanowires (AgNWs) on flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) support. The AuNDs/AgNWs/PDMS electrode affords an oxidative peak current density of 50 mA cm-2 for ethanol electrooxidation, a value ≈20 times higher than those in the literature do. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) demonstrates the significant contribution of the AgNWs to reduce impedance. The peak current densities for ethanol electrooxidation are decreased 7.5-fold when the AgNWs are electrolytically corroded. By in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and density functional theory (DFT) simulation, it is validated that the ethanol electrooxidation favors the production of acetic acid with undetectable CO, resulting in a more complete oxidation and long-term stability, while the AgNWs corrosion greatly decreases acetic acid production. This novel strategy for fabricating nanomaterial electrodes using AgNWs as a charge transfer conduit may stimulate insights into the design of nanomaterial electrodes.

Tip and heterogeneous effects co-contribute to a boosted performance and stability in zinc air battery

The zinc-air battery (ZAB) performance and stability strongly depend on the structure of bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER). In this work, we combine the tip and heterogeneous effects to construct cobalt/cobalt oxide heterostructure nanoarrays (Co/CoO-NAs). Due to the formed heterostructure, more oxygen vacancies are found for Co/CoO-NAs resulting in a 1.4-fold higher ORR intrinsic activity than commercial carbon supported platinum electrocatalyst (Pt/C) at 0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE). Moreover, a fast surface reconstruction is observed for Co/CoO-NAs during OER catalysis evidenced by in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Raman tests. In addition, the tip effect efficiently lowers the mass transfer resistance triggering a low overpotential of 347 mV at 200 mA cm-2 for Co/CoO-NAs. The strong electronic interplay between cobalt (Co) and cobalt oxide (CoO) contributes to a stable battery performance during 1200 h galvanostatic charge-discharge test at 5 mA cm-2. This work offers a new avenue to construct high-performance and stable oxygen electrocatalyst for rechargeable ZAB.

Voltage activation induced MoO42- dissolution to enhance performance of iron doped nickel molybdate for oxygen evolution reaction

Transition metal-based precatalysts are typically voltage-activated before electrochemical testing in the condition of alkaline oxygen evolution reaction. Nevertheless, the impact of voltage on the catalyst and the anion dissolution is frequently disregarded. In this study, Fe-doped NiMoO4 (Fe-NiMoO4) was synthesized as a precursor through a straightforward hydrothermal method, and MoFe-modified Ni (oxygen) hydroxide (MoFe-NiOxHy) was obtained via cyclic voltammetry (CV) activation. The effects of voltage on Fe-NiMoO4 and the dissolved inactive MoO42- ions in the process were examined in relation to OER performance. It has demonstrated that the crystallinity of the catalyst is reduced by voltage, thereby enhancing its electrocatalytic activity. The electron distribution state can be adjusted during the application of voltage, leading to the generation of additional active sites and an acceleration in the reaction rate. Additionally, MoO42- exhibits potential dependence during its dissolution. In the OER process, the dissolution of MoO42- enhances the reconstruction degree of Fe-NiMoO4 into the active substance and expedites the formation of active Ni(Fe)OOH. Hence, the optimized MoFe-NiOxHy exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic performance, with a current density of 100 mA cm-2 achieved at an overpotential of only 256 mV. This discovery contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of alkaline OER performance under the influence of applied voltage and the presence of inactive oxygen ions, offering a promising avenue for the development of efficient electrocatalysts.

Bioinspired Gas Manipulation for Regulating Multiphase Interactions in Electrochemistry

The manipulation of gas in multiphase interactions plays a crucial role in various electrochemical processes. Inspired by nature, researchers have explored bioinspired strategies for regulating these interactions, leading to remarkable advancements in design, mechanism, and applications. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of bioinspired gas manipulation in electrochemistry. It traces the evolution of gas manipulation in gas-involving electrochemical reactions, highlighting the key milestones and breakthroughs achieved thus far. The paper then delves into the design principles and underlying mechanisms of superaerophobic and (super)aerophilic electrodes, as well as asymmetric electrodes. Furthermore, the applications of bioinspired gas manipulation in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), and other gas-involving electrochemical reactions are summarized. The promising prospects and future directions in advancing multiphase interactions through gas manipulation are also discussed.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of acetonitrile to ethylamine in acid

Electrochemical hydrogenation of acetonitrile based on well-developed proton exchange membrane electrolyzers holds great promise for practical production of ethylamine. However, the local acidic condition of proton exchange membrane results in severe competitive proton reduction reaction and poor selection toward acetonitrile hydrogenation. Herein, we conduct a systematic study to screen various metallic catalysts and discover Pd/C exhibits a 43.8% ethylamine Faradaic efficiency at the current density of 200 mA cm-2 with a specific production rate of 2912.5 mmol g-1 h-1, which is about an order of magnitude higher than the other screened metal catalysts. Operando characterizations indicate the in-situ formed PdHx is the active centers for catalytic reaction and the adsorption strength of the *MeCH2NH2 intermediate dictates the catalytic selectivity. More importantly, the theoretical analysis reveals a classic d-band mediated volcano curve to describe the relation between the electronic structures of catalysts and activity, which could provide valuable insights for designing more effective catalysts for electrochemical hydrogenation reactions and beyond.

Coupling Curvature and Hydrophobicity: A Counterintuitive Strategy for Efficient Electroreduction of Nitrate into Ammonia

The electrochemical upcycling of nitrate (NO3-) to ammonia (NH3) holds promise for synergizing both wastewater treatment and NH3 synthesis. Efficient stripping of gaseous products (NH3, H2, and N2) from electrocatalysts is crucial for continuous and stable electrochemical reactions. This study evaluated a layered electrocatalyst structure using copper (Cu) dendrites to enable a high curvature and hydrophobicity and achieve a stratified liquid contact at the gas-liquid interface of the electrocatalyst layer. As such, gaseous product desorption or displacement from electrocatalysts was enhanced due to the separation of a wetted reaction zone and a nonwetted zone for gas transfer. Consequently, this electrocatalyst structure yielded a 2.9-fold boost in per-active-site activity compared with that with a low curvature and high hydrophilic counterpart. Moreover, a NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 90.9 ± 2.3% was achieved with nearly 100% NO3- conversion. This high-curvature hydrophobic Cu dendrite was further integrated with a gas-extraction membrane, which demonstrated a comparable NH3 yield from the real reverse osmosis retentate brine.

Tip-like Fe-N4 Sites Induced Surface Microenvironments Regulation Boosts the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Single atom catalysts with defined local structures and favorable surface microenvironments are significant for overcoming slow kinetics and accelerating O2 electroreduction. Here, enriched tip-like FeN4 sites (T-Fe SAC) on spherical carbon surfaces were developed to investigate the change in surface microenvironments and catalysis behavior. Finite element method (FEM) simulations, together with experiments, indicate the strong local electric field of the tip-like FeN4 and the more denser interfacial water layer, thereby enhancing the kinetics of the proton-coupled electron transfer process. In situ spectroelectrochemical studies and the density functional theory (DFT) calculation results indicate the pathway transition on the tip-like FeN4 sites, promoting the dissociation of O-O bond via side-on adsorption model. The adsorbed OH* can be facilely released on the curved surface and accelerate the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. The obtained T-Fe SAC nanoreactor exhibits excellent ORR activities (E1/2 =0.91 V vs. RHE) and remarkable stability, exceeding those of flat FeN4 and Pt/C. This work clarified the in-depth insights into the origin of catalytic activity of tip-like FeN4 sites and held great promise in industrial catalysis, electrochemical energy storage, and many other fields.

The dual built-in electric fields across CoS/MoS2 heterojunctions for energy-saving hydrogen production coupled with sulfion degradation

Substituting the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction with the sulfur oxidation reaction can significantly reduce energy consumption and eliminate environmental pollutants during hydrogen generation. However, the progress of this technology has been hindered due to the lack of cost-effective, efficient, and durable electrocatalysts. In this study, we present the design and construction of a hierarchical metal sulfide catalyst with a gradient structure comprising nanoparticles, nanosheets, and microparticles. This was achieved through a structure-breaking sulfuration strategy, resulting in a "ball of yarn"-like core/shell CoS/MoS2 microflower with CoS/MoS2/CoS dual-heterojunctions. The difference in work functions between CoS and MoS2 induces an electron polarization effect, creating dual built-in electric fields at the hierarchical interfaces. This effectively modulates the adsorption behavior of catalytic intermediates, thereby reducing the energy barrier for catalytic reactions. The optimized catalyst exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance for both the hydrogen evolution reaction and the sulfur oxidation reaction. Remarkably, in the assembled electrocatalytic coupling system, it only requires a cell voltage of 0.528 V at 10 mA cm-2 and maintains long-term durability for over 168 h. This work presents new opportunities for low-cost hydrogen production and environmentally friendly sulfion recycling.

Pioneering Piezoelectric-Driven Atomic Hydrogen for Efficient Dehalogenation of Halogenated Organic Pollutants

The electrocatalytic hydrodehalogenation (EHDH) process mediated by atomic hydrogen (H*) is recognized as an efficient method for degrading halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs). However, a significant challenge is the excessive energy consumption resulting from the recombination of H* to H2 production in the EHDH process. In this study, a promising strategy was proposed to generate piezo-induced atomic H*, without external energy input or chemical consumption, for the degradation and dehalogenation of HOPs. Specifically, sub-5 nm Ni nanoparticles were subtly dotted on an N-doped carbon layer coating on BaTiO3 cube, and the resulted hybrid nanocomposite (Ni-NC@BTO) can effectively break C-X (X = Cl and F) bonds under ultrasonic vibration or mechanical stirring, demonstrating high piezoelectric driven dehalogenation efficiencies toward various HOPs. Mechanistic studies revealed that the dotted Ni nanoparticles can efficiently capture H* to form Ni-H* (Habs) and drive the dehalogenation process to lower the toxicity of intermediates. COMSOL simulations confirmed a "chimney effect" on the interface of Ni nanoparticle, which facilitated the accumulation of H+ and enhanced electron transfer for H* formation by improving the surface charge of the piezocatalyst and strengthening the interfacial electric field. Our work introduces an environmentally friendly dehalogenation method for HOPs using the piezoelectric process independent of the external energy input and chemical consumption.

Local reaction environment in electrocatalysis

Beyond conventional electrocatalyst engineering, recent studies have unveiled the effectiveness of manipulating the local reaction environment in enhancing the performance of electrocatalytic reactions. The general principles and strategies of local environmental engineering for different electrocatalytic processes have been extensively investigated. This review provides a critical appraisal of the recent advancements in local reaction environment engineering, aiming to comprehensively assess this emerging field. It presents the interactions among surface structure, ions distribution and local electric field in relation to the local reaction environment. Useful protocols such as the interfacial reactant concentration, mass transport rate, adsorption/desorption behaviors, and binding energy are in-depth discussed toward modifying the local reaction environment. Meanwhile, electrode physical structures and reaction cell configurations are viable optimization methods in engineering local reaction environments. In combination with operando investigation techniques, we conclude that rational modifications of the local reaction environment can significantly enhance various electrocatalytic processes by optimizing the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the reaction interface. We also outline future research directions to attain a comprehensive understanding and effective modulation of the local reaction environment.

Grain Boundary Tailors the Local Chemical Environment on Iridium Surface for Alkaline Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Even though grain boundaries (GBs) have been previously employed to increase the number of active catalytic sites or tune the binding energies of reaction intermediates for promoting electrocatalytic reactions, the effect of GBs on the tailoring of the local chemical environment on the catalyst surface has not been clarified thus far. In this study, a GBs-enriched iridium (GB-Ir) was synthesized and examined for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Operando Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that a local acid-like environment with H3 O+ intermediates was created in the GBs region owing to the electron-enriched surface Ir atoms at the GBs. The H3 O+ intermediates lowered the energy barrier for water dissociation and provided enough hydrogen proton to promote the generation of hydrogen spillover from the sites at the GBs to the sites away from the GBs, thus synergistically enhancing the hydrogen evolution activity. Notably, the GB-Ir catalyst exhibited a high alkaline HER activity (10 mV @ 10 mA cm-2 , 20 mV dec-1 ). We believe that our findings will promote further research on GBs and the surface science of electrochemical reactions.

Lattice oxygen activation and local electric field enhancement by co-doping Fe and F in CoO nanoneedle arrays for industrial electrocatalytic water oxidation

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical to renewable energy conversion technologies, but the structure-activity relationships and underlying catalytic mechanisms in catalysts are not fully understood. We herein demonstrate a strategy to promote OER with simultaneously achieved lattice oxygen activation and enhanced local electric field by dual doping of cations and anions. Rough arrays of Fe and F co-doped CoO nanoneedles are constructed, and a low overpotential of 277 mV at 500 mA cm-2 is achieved. The dually doped Fe and F could cooperatively tailor the electronic properties of CoO, leading to improved metal-oxygen covalency and stimulated lattice oxygen activation. Particularly, Fe doping induces a synergetic effect of tip enhancement and proximity effect, which effectively concentrates OH- ions, optimizes reaction energy barrier and promotes O2 desorption. This work demonstrates a conceptual strategy to couple lattice oxygen and local electric field for effective electrocatalytic water oxidation.

Multiple synergies on cobalt-based spinel oxide nanowires for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Cobalt-based spinel oxides have excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities and are cheap to produce; however, they have limited commercial applications due to their poor electrical conductivities and weak stabilities. Herein, we soaked Co3-xNixO4 nanowires in NaBH4 solutions, which endowed Co3-xNixO4 with significant oxygen vacancy content and decorated BOx motifs outside the Co3-xNixO4 nanowires. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ Raman data suggest that these evolutions improved the conductivity, hydrophilicity, and increased active sites of the spinel oxides, which synergistically boosted their overall OER performances. This improved performance made the optimized BOx-covered Co2.1Ni0.9O4 nanowires generate a current density of 10 mA cm-2 when used for the OER at an overpotential of only 307 mV, maintaining excellent stability at 50 mA cm-2 for 24 h. This study provides a facile method for designing cobalt-based spinel oxide OER catalysts.

Alkynes Electrooxidation to α,α-Dichloroketones in Seawater with Natural Chlorine Participation via Competitive Reaction Inhibition and Tip-Enhanced Reagent Concentration

The traditional synthesis of α,α-dichloroketones usually requires corrosive chlorine, harsh reaction conditions, or excessive electrolytes. Here, we report an electrooxidation strategy of ethynylbenzenes to α,α-dichloroketones by directly utilizing seawater as the chlorine source and electrolyte solution without an additional supporting electrolyte. High-curvature NiCo2O4 nanocones are designed to inhibit competitive O2 and Cl2 evolution reactions and concentrate Cl- and OH- ions, accelerating α,α-dichloroketone electrosynthesis. NiCo2O4 nanocones produce 81% yield, 61% Faradaic efficiency, and 44.2 mmol gcat.-1 h-1 yield rate of α,α-dichloroketones, outperforming NiCo2O4 nanosheets. A Cl• radical triggered Cl• and OH• radical addition mechanism is revealed by a variety of radical-trapping and control experiments. The feasibility of a solar-powered electrosynthesis system, methodological universality, and extended synthesis of α,α-dichloroketone-drug blocks confirm its practical potential. This work may provide a sustainable solution to the electrocatalytic synthesis of α,α-dichloroketones via the utilization of seawater resources.

Membrane-Free Electrosynthesis of Epichlorohydrins Mediated by Bromine Radicals over Nanotips

The industrial manufacture of epichlorohydrin (ECH) often suffers from excessive corrosive chlorine and multistep processes. Here, we report a one-pot membrane-free Br radical-mediated ECH electrosynthesis. Bromine radicals electro-oxidized from Br- ions initiate the reaction and then eliminate HBr from bromohydrin to give ECH and release Br- ions for reuse. A high energy barrier for *OH oxidation and isolated Br adsorption sites enables NiCo2O4 to suppress the competitive oxygen and bromine evolution reactions. The high-curvature nanotips with an increased electric field concentrate Br- and OH- ions to accelerate ECH electrosynthesis. This strategy delivers ECH with a Faradaic efficiency of 47% and a reaction rate of 1.4 mol h-1 gcat-1 at a high current density of 100 mA cm-2, exceeding the profitable target from the techno-economic analysis. Economically profitable electrosynthesis, methodological universality, and the extended synthesis of epoxide-drug blocks highlight their promising potential.

Nanowire-assisted electrochemical perforation of graphene oxide nanosheets for molecular separation

Two-dimensional nanosheets, e.g., graphene oxide (GO), have been widely used to fabricate efficient membranes for molecular separation. However, because of poor transport across nanosheets and high width-to-thickness ratio, the permeation pathway length and tortuosity of these membranes are extremely large, which limit their separation performance. Here we report a facile, scalable, and controllable nanowire electrochemical concept for perforating and modifying nanosheets to shorten permeation pathway and adjust transport property. It is found that confinement effects with locally enhanced charge density, electric field, and hydroxyl radical generation over nanowire tips on anode can be executed under low voltage, thereby inducing confined direct electron loss and indirect oxidation to reform configuration and composition of GO nanosheets. We demonstrate that the porous GO nanosheets with a lot of holes are suitable for assembling separation membranes with tuned accessibility, tortuosity, interlayer space, electronegativity, and hydrophilicity. For molecular separation, the prepared membranes exhibit quadruple water permeance and higher rejections for salts (>91%) and small molecules (>96%) as/than original ones. This nanowire electrochemical perforation concept offers a feasible strategy to reconstruct two-dimensional materials and tune their transport property for separation.

Lithium metal deposition under the geometrical confinement effect: Dendritic copper foam current collector

Dendrite-free lithium is the ultimate goal in achieving the commercial application of lithium metal anode. In this paper, Dendritic Copper Foam Current Collector (DCFC) is prepared by an electrometallurgy method to realize the homogeneous deposition of lithium metal. The deposition behavior of Cu and Li on different interfaces was studied. Firstly, the Cu dendrites constructed on the surface of Cu foam are induced and formed by the potential oscillation generated by the hydrogen evolution reaction. Secondly, the heterogeneous nucleation model reveals that the reason for the dendrite-free lithium deposition on the dendritic copper foam is the geometrical confinement effect. Compared with commercial copper foam, DCFC with hierarchical structure significantly reduces the nucleation energy and deposition overpotential of lithium metal. The in situ optical microscope observation and finite element simulation results confirm our ideas. Electrochemically, DCFC works stably after 1200 h at a lower potential of 36 mV in a DCFC@Li symmetric battery, which is much superior to 75 mV for just 340 h in Cu foam. The ideal collector with a dendritic structure has broad prospects for the practical application of lithium metal anode.

Facile generation of CeO2 nanoparticles on multiphased NiSx nanoplatelet arrays as a free-standing electrode for efficient overall water splitting

Constructing nanostructured electrocatalysts with heterointerface and finetuning their electronic properties are essential for high-efficient overall water splitting. Here, we prepared a well-designed nano-flower-like multiphase and hybrid material of NiS/NiS2/CeO2/NF (NiSx/CeO2/NF) with rich heterointerfaces and abundant active sites through solvothermal reaction and post-annealing treatment. The as-fabricated NiSx/CeO2/NF exhibits exceptional catalytic performance for OER and HER. Specifically, in 1 M KOH solution, it requires the low overpotentials of 326 and 92 mV to achieve the current density of 200 and 10 mA cm-2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. More satisfactorily, when NiSx/CeO2/NF is used as the bifunctional catalyst, a low voltage of only 1.53 V is required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting. The excellent catalytic performance should be attributed to its special heterogeneous structure and the synergy effect between NiSx and CeO2. This work emphasizes the important significance of constructing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts by reasonably designing heterostructures and multiphase components for overall water splitting.

Dynamically Adaptive Bubbling for Upgrading Oxygen Evolution Reaction Using Lamellar Fern-Like Alloy Aerogel Self-Standing Electrodes

Adopting renewable electricity to produce "green" hydrogen has been a critical challenge because at a high current density the mass transfer capability of most catalytic electrodes deteriorates significantly. Herein, a unique lamellar fern-like alloy aerogel (LFA) electrode, showing a unique dynamically adaptive bubbling capability and can effectively avoid stress concentration caused by bubble aggregation is reported. The LFA electrode is intrinsically highly catalytic-active and shows a highly porous, resilient, hierarchically ordered, and well-percolated conductive network. It not only shows superior gas evacuation capability but also exhibits significantly improved stability at high current densities, showing the record lowest oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential of 244 mV at 1000 mA cm-2 and stably over 6000 h. With the merits of mechanical robustness, excellent electron transport, and efficient bubble evacuation, LFA can be self-standing catalytic electrode and gas diffusion layers in anion-exchange-membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE), which can achieve 3000 mA cm-2 at a low voltage of 1.88 V and can sustain stable electrolysis at 2000 mA cm-2 for over 1300 h. This strategy can be extended to various gas evolution reactions as a general design rule for multiphase catalysis applications.

Nanotip-Induced Electric Field for Hydrogen Catalysis

Local electric field induced by the lightning-rod effect attracts great attention for regulating the local microenvironment and electronic properties of active sites. Nevertheless, local electric-field-assisted applications are mainly limited to metals with strong surface plasmonic resonance properties (e.g., Au, Ag, and Cu). Herein, we fabricate RuCu snow-like nanosheets (SNSs) with high-curvature nanotips for enhancing the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Theoretical simulations show that RuCu SNSs can induce a strong local electric field around the sharp nanotips, which favors the accumulation of OH- for HOR and H+ for HER. Cu incorporation can modulate the binding strength of OH* and H*, leading to significantly enhanced HOR and HER performance. Impressively, the mass activity of RuCu SNSs for alkaline HOR is 31.3 times higher than that of RuCu nanocrystals without sharp tips. Besides, the required overpotential for reaching 10 mA cm-2 during HER over RuCu SNSs is 14.0 mV.

Ru Cluster Incorporated NiMoO(P)4 Nanosheet Arrays as High-Efficient Bifunctional Catalyst for Wind/Solar-To-Hydrogen Generation Systems

Developing cost-efficient bifunctional water splitting catalysts is crucial for sustainable hydrogen energy applications. Herein, ruthenium (Ru)-incorporated and phosphorus (P)-doped nickel molybdate (Ru-NiMoO(P)4 ) nanosheet array catalysts are synthesized. Due to the synergy of Ru clusters and NiMoO(P)4 by the modulated electronic structure and the rich active sites, impressively, Ru-NiMoO(P)4 exhibits superior OER (194 mV @ 50 mA cm-2 ) and HER (24 mV @ 10 mA cm-2 ) activity in alkaline media, far exceeding that of commercial Pt/C and RuO2 catalysts. Meanwhile, as bifunctional catalyst, to drive the overall water splitting at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 , Ru-NiMoO(P)4 requires only 1.45 V and maintaining stable output for 100 h. Furthermore, Ru-NiMoO(P)4 also possesses excellent capability for seawater electrolysis hydrogen production. Moreover, the successful demonstration of wind and solar hydrogen production systems provide the feasibility of the ultra-low Ru loading catalyst for large-scale hydrogen production in the future.

Rapid Formation of Epitaxial Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalysts on Dendrites with High Catalytic Activity and Stability

Oxygen evolution reaction is an essential but kinetically sluggish step in many energy storage and conversion processes and therefore is in pursuit of highly efficient and stable catalysts. Although nanosized transition-metal-based oxides/hydroxides exhibit high catalytic activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), many of them suffer from low stability at an anode current density in industrial scale. Herein, by combining a rapid epitaxial formation method with dynamic bubble-templated electrodeposition, we successfully developed single crystalline NiFeCu oxide catalysts with a hierarchical porous structure. It was found that the structure can facilitate fast electron transportation for the catalysts and retard the diffusion of the O atoms to the inner metallic current collector. The hierarchical pores inherited from the hydrogen bubble templates built ideal channels for the massive and rapid release of oxygen bubbles. As a consequence, the NiFeCu oxides catalyzed the OER more efficiently and steadily than the commercial RuO2 catalyst at an anode current density in industrial scale (300 mA/cm2). This work, by resolving the durability concerns for nanosized oxides, offers a series of highly efficient and stable catalysts for OER and a structure building strategy to boost the catalytic activity and stability for nonconductive catalysts.

Bubble Engineering on Micro-/Nanostructured Electrodes for Water Splitting

Bubble behaviors play crucial roles in mass transfer and energy efficiency in gas evolution reactions. Combining multiscale structures and surface chemical compositions, micro-/nanostructured electrodes have drawn increasing attention. With the aim to identify the exciting opportunities and rationalize the electrode designs, in this review, we present our current comprehension of bubble engineering on micro-/nanostructured electrodes, focusing on water splitting. We first provide a brief introduction of gas wettability on micro-/nanostructured electrodes. Then we discuss the advantages of micro-/nanostructured electrodes for mass transfer (detailing the lowered overpotential, promoted supply of electrolyte, and faster bubble growth kinetics), localized electric field intensity, and electrode stability. Following that, we outline strategies for promoting bubble detachment and directional transportation. Finally, we offer our perspectives on this emerging field for future research directions.

Tip-Enhanced Sub-Femtomolar Steroid Immunosensing via Micropyramidal Flexible Conducting Polymer Electrodes for At-Home Monitoring of Salivary Sex Hormones

Noninvasive testing and continuous monitoring of ultralow-concentration hormones in biofluids have attracted increasing interest for health management and personalized medicine, in which saliva could fulfill the demand. Steroid sex hormones such as progesterone (P4) and β-estradiol (E2) are crucial for female wellness and reproduction; however, their concentrations in saliva can vary down to sub-pM and constantly fluctuate over several orders of magnitude. This remains a major obstacle toward user-friendly and reliable monitoring at home with low-cost flexible biosensors. Herein we introduce a 3D micropyramidal electrode architecture to address such challenges and achieve an ultrasensitive flexible electrochemical immunosensor with sub-fM-level detection capability of salivary sex hormones within a few minutes. This is enabled by micropyramidal electrode arrays consisting of a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) thin film as the coating layer and electrochemically decorated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to improve the antibody immobilization. The enhanced mass transport around the 3D tips provided by the micropyramidal architecture is discovered to improve the detection limit by 3 orders of magnitude, pushing it to as low as ∼100 aM for P4 and ∼20 aM for E2, along with a wide linear range up to μM. Accordingly, these hormones down to sub-fM in >1000-fold-diluted saliva samples can be accurately measured by the printed soft immunosensors, thus allowing at-home testing through simple saliva dilution to minimize the interfering substances instead of centrifugation. Finally, monitoring of the female ovarian hormone cycle of both P4 and E2 is successfully demonstrated based on the centrifuge-free saliva testing during a period of 4 weeks. This ultrasensitive and soft 3D microarchitected electrode design is believed to provide a universal platform for a diverse variety of applications spanning from accurate clinical diagnostics and counselling and in vivo detection of bioactive species to environmental and food quality tracing.

Identifying the role of array electrodes in improving the compost quality of food waste during electric field-assisted aerobic composting

Low composting temperature and long maturation periods are two major problems during food waste composting. In this study, a novel array-based electric field-assisted aerobic composting (Pin-EAC) process was tested on food waste compost. Pin-EAC increase the composting temperature to 69.3 °C, and improved the germination index by 15%. The Pin-EAC took at least 40% less time to reach the standard compost maturity. The fluorescent spectroscopy results showed that Pin-EAC could increase humic acid and fulvic acid by 33% and 37%, respectively. Pin-EAC could increase the diversity of thermophilic bacteria during composting. The co-occurrence network shown that Pin-EAC are more closely related to oxygen and temperature. This work has initially shown that the use of an electric field could improve food waste composting quality, suggesting that the Pin-EAC process is an effective strategy for high-water and high-oil organic solid waste aerobic composting.

Charge Self-Regulation of Metallic Heterostructure Ni2 P@Co9 S8 for Alkaline Water Electrolysis with Ultralow Overpotential at Large Current Density

Designing cost-effective alkaline water-splitting electrocatalysts is essential for large-scale hydrogen production. However, nonprecious catalysts face challenges in achieving high activity and durability at a large current density. An effective strategy for designing high-performance electrocatalysts is regulating the active electronic states near the Fermi-level, which can improve the intrinsic activity and increase the number of active sites. As a proof-of-concept, it proposes a one-step self-assembly approach to fabricate a novel metallic heterostructure based on nickel phosphide and cobalt sulfide (Ni2 P@Co9 S8 ) composite. The charge transfer between active Ni sites of Ni2 P and Co─Co bonds of Co9 S8 efficiently enhances the active electronic states of Ni sites, and consequently, Ni2 P@Co9 S8 exhibits remarkably low overpotentials of 188 and 253 mV to reach the current density of 100 mA cm-2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, respectively. This leads to the Ni2 P@Co9 S8 incorporated water electrolyzer possessing an ultralow cell voltage of 1.66 V@100 mA cm-2 with ≈100% retention over 100 h, surpassing the commercial Pt/C║RuO2 catalyst (1.9 V@100 mA cm-2 ). This work provides a promising methodology to boost the activity of overall water splitting with ultralow overpotentials at large current density by shedding light on the charge self-regulation of metallic heterostructure.

The Secret of Nanoarrays toward Efficient Electrochemical Water Splitting: A Vision of Self-Dynamic Electrolyte

Nanoarray electrocatalysts with unique advantage of facilitating gas bubble detachment have garnered significant interest in gas evolution reactions (GERs). Existing research is largely based on a static hypothesis, assuming that buoyancy is the only driving force for the release of bubbles during GERs. However, this hypothesis overlooks the effect of the self-dynamic electrolyte flow, which is induced by the release of mature bubbles and helps destabilize and release the smaller, immature bubbles nearby. Herein, the enhancing effect of self-dynamic electrolyte flow on nanoarray structures is examined. Phase-field simulations demonstrate that the flow field of electrode with arrayed surface focuses shear force directly onto the gas bubble for efficient detachment, due to the flow could pass through voids and channels to bypass the shielding effect. The flow field therefore has a more substantial impact on the arrayed surface than the nanoscale smooth surface in terms of reducing the critical bubble size. To validate this, superaerophobic ferrous-nickel sulfide nanoarrays are fabricated and employed for water splitting, which display improved efficiency for GERs. This study contributes to understanding the influence of self-dynamic electrolyte on GERs and emphasizes that it should be considered when designing and evaluating nanoarray electrocatalysts.

Rational Design of Trimetallic Sulfide Electrodes for Alkaline Water Electrolysis with Ampere-Level Current Density

Electrochemical water splitting is considered an environmentally friendly approach to hydrogen generation. However, it is difficult to achieve high current density and stability. Herein, we design an amorphous/crystalline heterostructure electrode based on trimetallic sulfide over nickel mesh substrate (NiFeMoS/NM), which only needs low overpotentials of 352 mV, 249 mV, and 360 mV to achieve an anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) current density of 1 A cm-2 in 1 M KOH, strong alkaline electrolyte (7.6 M KOH), and alkaline-simulated seawater, respectively. More importantly, it also shows superior stability with negligible decay after continuous work for 120 h at 1 A cm-2 in the strong alkaline electrolyte. The excellent OER performance of the as-obtained electrode can be attributed to the strong electronic interactions between different metal atoms, abundant amorphous/crystalline hetero-interfaces, and 3D porous nickel mesh structure. Finally, we coupled NiFeMoS/NM as both the anode and cathode in the anion exchange membrane electrolyzer, which can achieve low cell voltage and high stability at ampere-level current density, demonstrating the great potential of practicability.

Rational Design of Goethite-Sulfide Nanowire Heterojunctions for High Current Density Water Splitting

The preparation of efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for electrochemical overall water splitting (OWS) to scale up commercial hydrogen production remains a great challenge. Here, we synthesized heterojunction structures consisting of Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₂ nanowire arrays and amorphous goethite (FeOOH, α-phase) particles as efficient OWS catalysts using an interface engineering strategy. The interfacial charge inhomogeneity caused by the heterojunction contact leads to the generation of a built-in electric field, which makes the electron-deficient FeOOH and electron-rich Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₂ favorable for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction, respectively, thus ensuring the excellent activity of FeOOH/Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₂ as a bifunctional catalyst. FeOOH/Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₂ exhibits impressive catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction, achieving an ultralarge current density of 1000 mA cm^-2 needed as low as 265 mV overpotential, and its stability was tested up to 1440 h. Furthermore, an excellent OWS output (1.55 V to generate 10 mA cm^-2) is achieved by the bifunctional FeOOH/Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₂ catalysts.

Surface and near-surface engineering design of transition metal catalysts for promoting water splitting

Transition metal catalysts are widely used in the field of hydrogen production via water electrolysis. The surface state and near-surface environment of the catalysts greatly affect the efficiency of hydrogen production. Therefore, the rational design of surface engineering and near-surface engineering of transition metal catalysts can significantly improve the performance of water electrolysis. This review systematically introduces surface engineering strategies, including heteroatom doping, vacancy engineering, strain regulation, heterojunction effect, and surface reconstruction. These strategies optimize the surface electronic structure of the catalysts, expose more active sites, and promote the formation of highly active species, ultimately enhancing water electrolysis performance. Furthermore, near-surface engineering strategies, such as surface wettability, three-dimensional structure, high-curvature structure, external field assistance, and extra ion addition, are thoroughly discussed. These strategies expedite the mass transfer of reactants and gas products, improve the local chemical environment near the catalyst surface, and contribute toward achieving an industrial-level current density for overall water splitting. Finally, the key challenges faced by surface engineering and near-surface engineering of transition metal catalysts are highlighted and potential solutions are proposed. This review offers essential guidelines for the design and development of efficient transition metal catalysts for water electrolysis.

Amorphous TiOx Stabilized Intermetallic Pt3Ti Nanocatalyst for Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Intermetallic compounds, featuring atomically ordered structures, have emerged as a class of promising electrocatalysts for fuel cells. However, it remains a formidable challenge to controllably synthesize Pt-based intermetallics during the essential high-temperature annealing process as well as stabilize the nanoparticles (NPs) during the electrocatalytic process. Herein, we demonstrated a Ketjen black supported intermetallic Pt₃Ti nanocatalyst coupled with amorphous TiO_x species (Pt₃Ti-TiO_x/KB). The TiO_x can not only confine Pt₃Ti NPs during the synthesis and electrocatalytic process by a strong metal-oxide interaction but also promote the water dissociation for generating more OH species, thus facilitating the conversion of CO_ad. The Pt₃Ti-TiO_x/KB showed a significantly enhanced mass activity (2.15 A mg_Pt^-1) for the methanol oxidation reaction, compared with Pt₃Ti/KB and Pt/C, and presented an impressively high mass activity retention (∼71%) after the durability test. This work provides an effective strategy of coupling Pt-based intermetallics with functional oxides for developing highly performed electrocatalysts.

Novel trifunctional electrocatalyst of nickel foam supported Co2P/NiMoO4 heterostructures for overall water splitting and urea oxidation

The process of electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen generation is significantly limited by sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The efficiency of H₂ electrocatalytic generation can be improved by reducing the anode potential or substituting urea oxidation reaction (UOR) for oxygen evolution process. Here, we report a robust catalyst based on Co₂P/NiMoO₄ heterojunction arrays supported on nickel foam (NF) for water splitting and urea oxidation. In the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media, the optimized catalyst Co₂P/NiMoO₄/NF displayed a lower overpotential (169 mV) at a large current density (150 mA cm^-2) compared to 20 wt% Pt/C/NF (295 mV@150 mA cm^-2). In the OER and UOR, the potentials were as low as 1.45 and 1.34 V. These values surpass (for OER), or compare favorably to (for UOR), the most advanced commercial catalyst RuO₂/NF (at 10 mA cm^-2). This outstanding performance was attributed to the addition of Co₂P, which has a significant effect on the chemical environment and electron structure of NiMoO₄, while increasing the number of active sites and promoting charge transfer across the Co₂P/NiMoO₄ interface. This work proposes a high-performance and cost-effective electrocatalyst for water splitting and urea oxidation.

Key Roles of Interfacial OH- ion Distribution on Proton Coupled Electron Transfer Kinetics Toward Urea Oxidation Reaction

Enhancing alkaline urea oxidation reaction (UOR) activity is essential to upgrade renewable electrolysis systems. As a core step of UOR, proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) determines the overall performance, and accelerating its kinetic remains a challenge. In this work, a newly raised electrocatalyst of NiCoMoCuO_x H_y with derived multi-metal co-doping (oxy)hydroxide species during electrochemical oxidation states is reported, which ensures considerable alkaline UOR activity (10/500 mA cm^-2 at 1.32/1.52 V vs RHE, respectively). Impressively, comprehensive studies elucidate the correlation between the electrode-electrolyte interfacial microenvironment and the electrocatalytic urea oxidation behavior. Specifically, NiCoMoCuO_x H_y featured with dendritic nanostructure creates a strengthened electric field distribution. This structural factor prompts the local OH^- enrichment in electrical double layer (EDL), so that the dehydrogenative oxidation of the catalyst is directly reinforced to facilitate the subsequent PCET kinetics of nucleophilic urea, resulting in high UOR performance. In practical utilization, NiCoMoCuO_x H_y -driven UOR coupled cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂ RR), and harvested high value-added products of H₂ and C₂ H₄ , respectively. This work clarifies a novel mechanism to improve electrocatalytic UOR performance through structure-induced interfacial microenvironment modulation.

Carbon-Free, Binder-Free MnO2@Mn Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Reasonable design and feasible preparation of low-cost and stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with excellent performance play a key role in the development of fuel cells and metal-air batteries. A 3D porous superimposed nanosheet catalyst composed of metal manganese covered with MnO₂ nanofilms (P-NS-MnO₂@Mn) was designed and synthesized by rotating disk electrodes (RDEs) through one-step electrodeposition. The catalyst contains no carbon material. Therefore, the oxidation and corrosion of the carbon material during use can be avoided, resulting in excellent stability. The structural and composition characterizations indicate that the nanosheets with sharp edges exist on the surface of the wall surrounding the macropore (diameter ∼ 5.07 μm) and they connect tightly. Both the nanosheets and the wall of the macropore are composed of metal manganese covered completely with MnO₂ film with a thickness of less than 5 nm. The half-wave potential of the synthesized P-NS-MnO₂@Mn catalyst is 0.86 V. Besides, the catalyst exhibits good stability with almost no decay after a 30 h chronoamperometric test. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulation reveals the high local electric field intensity surrounding the sharp edges of the nanosheets. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the novel nanosheet structure composed of MnO₂ nanofilms covered on the surface of the Mn matrix accelerates the electronic transfer of the MnO₂ nanofilms during the ORR process. The high local electric field intensity near the sharp edge of the nanosheets effectively promotes the orbital hybridization and strengthens the adsorbing Mn-O bond between the active site Mn in the nanosheets and the intermediate OOH* during the ORR process. This study provides a new strategy for preparing transition metal oxide catalysts and a novel idea about the key factors affecting the catalytic activity of transition metal oxides for the ORR.

Transition metal chalcogenides carbon-based as bifunctional cathode electrocatalysts for rechargeable zinc-air battery: An updated review

The rechargeable alkaline aqueous zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are prospective candidates to supply the energy demand for their high theoretical energy density, inherent safety, and environmental friendliness. However, their practical application is mainly restricted by the unsatisfactory efficiency of the air electrode, leading to an intense search for high-efficient oxygen electrocatalysts. In recent years, the composites of carbon materials and transition metal chalcogenides (TMC/C) have emerged as promising alternatives because of the unique properties of these single compounds and the synergistic effect between them. In this sense, this review presented the electrochemical properties of these composites and their effects on the ZAB performance. The operational fundamentals of the ZABs were described. After elucidating the role of the carbon matrix in the hybrid material, the latest developments in the ZAB performance of the monometallic structure and spinel of TMC/C were detailed. In addition, we report topics on doping and heterostructure due to the large number of studies involving these specific defects. Finally, a critical conclusion and a brief overview sought to contribute to the advancement of TMC/C in the ZABs.

Pt-Quantum-Dot-Modified Sulfur-Doped NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide for High-Current-Density Alkaline Water Splitting at Industrial Temperature

Suitable electrocatalysts for industrial water splitting can veritably promote practical hydrogen applications. Rational surface design is exceptionally significant for electrocatalysts to bridge the gap between fundamental science and industrial expectation in water splitting. Here, Pt-quantum-dot-modified sulfur-doped NiFe layered double hydroxides (Pt@S-NiFe LDHs) are designed with eximious catalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under industrial condition. Benefiting from enhanced binding energy, mass transfer, and hydrogen release, Pt@S-NiFe LDHs exhibit outstanding activity in HER at high current densities. Notably, it obtains an impressively low overpotential of 71 mV and long-term stability of 200 h at 100 mA cm^-2 , exceeding commercial 40% Pt/C and most reported Pt-based electrocatalysts. Its mass activity is 2.7 times higher than that of 40% Pt/C with an overpotential of 100 mV. Furthermore, at industrial temperature (65 °C), the electrolyzer based on Pt@S-NiFe LDH needs just 1.62 V to reach the current density of 100 mA cm^-2 , superior to that of the commercial one of 40% Pt/C//IrO₂ . This work provides rational ideas to develop electrocatalysts with exceptional performance for industrial high-temperature water splitting at high current densities.

Amorphous Oxysulfide Reconstructed from Spinel NiCo2 S4 for Efficient Water Oxidation

The progress of effective and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is urgent, which is essential to promote the overall efficiency of green hydrogen production. To improve the performance of spinel cobalt-based oxides, which serve as promising water oxidation electrocatalysts in alkaline electrolytes, most researches have been concentrated on cations modification. Here, an anionic regulation mechanism is employed to adopt sulfur(S) anion substitution to supplant NiCo₂ O₄ by NiCo₂ S₄ , which contributed to an impressive OER performance in alkali. It is revealed that the substitution of S constructs a sub-stable spinel structure that facilitates its reconstruction into active amorphous oxysulfide under OER conditions. More importantly, as the active phase in the actual reaction process, the hetero-anionic amorphous oxysulfide has an appropriately tuned electronic structure and efficient OER electrocatalytic activity. This work demonstrates a promising approach for achieving anion conditioning-based tunable structure reconstruction for robust and easy preparation spinel oxide OER electrocatalysts.

NiFe-based electrocatalyst anchored on nanocone with tip-field effect for improved oxygen evolution reaction

The development of high efficiency oxygen evolution electrocatalyst is of great significance for water splitting reaction. Herein, an efficient cone-structured NiFe-LDH/Nicone/Ti catalyst is fabricated by electrodeposition method towards enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The featured tip curvature of nanocone structure can accelerate the reaction kinetics of OER by offering a field-enhanced aggregation of local hydroxide ion reactant on the catalyst surface, and thus improves the performance of the NiFe catalyst. Accordingly, NiFe-LDH/Nicone/Ti requires only a low overpotential of 292 mV to achieve 50 mA cm^-2, and with high stability under continuous high-current operations. In addition, the alkali-electrolyzer using NiFe-LDH/Nicone/Ti electrode exhibits good performance with a voltage of 1.73 V at 50 mA cm^-2and displays excellent stability in long-term stability test. This cone-structured catalyst design with field-enhanced local hydroxide ion aggregation effect provides a promising method for the development of highly active OER electrocatalysts.

Integrated Micro Space Electrostatic Field in Aqueous Zn-Ion Battery: Scalable Electrospray Fabrication of Porous Crystalline Anode Coating

The inhomogeneous consumption of anions and direct contact between electrolyte and anode during the Zn-deposition process generate Zn-dendrites and side reactions that can aggravate the space-charge effect to hinder the practical implementation of zinc-metal batteries (ZMBs). Herein, electrospray has been applied for the scalable fabrication (>10 000 cm² in a batch-experiment) of hetero-metallic cluster covalent-organic-frameworks (MCOF-Ti₆ Cu₃ ) nanosheet-coating (MNC) with integrated micro space electrostatic field for ZMBs anode protection. The MNC@Zn symmetric cell presents ultralow overpotential (≈72.8 mV) over 10 000 cycles at 1 mAh cm^-2 with 20 mA cm^-2 , which is superior to bare Zn and state-of-the-art porous crystalline materials. Theoretical calculations reveal that MNC with integrated micro space electrostatic field can facilitate the deposition-kinetic and homogenize the electric field of anode to significantly promote the lifespan of ZMBs.

Selectively Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution within Nanoscopic Channels Fitting a Specific Reaction Intermediate for Seawater Splitting

Abundant availability of seawater grants economic and resource-rich benefits to water electrolysis technology requiring high-purity water if undesired reactions such as chlorine evolution reaction (CER) competitive to oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are suppressed. Inspired by a conceptual computational work suggesting that OER is kinetically improved via a double activation within 7 Å-gap nanochannels, RuO₂ catalysts are realized to have nanoscopic channels at 7, 11, and 14 Å gap in average (d_gap ), and preferential activity improvement of OER over CER in seawater by using nanochanneled RuO₂ is demonstrated. When the channels are developed to have 7 Å gap, the OER current is maximized with the overpotential required for triggering OER minimized. The gap value guaranteeing the highest OER activity is identical to the value expected from the computational work. The improved OER activity significantly increases the selectivity of OER over CER in seawater since the double activation by the 7 Å-nanoconfined environments to allow an OER intermediate (*OOH) to be doubly anchored to Ru and O active sites does not work on the CER intermediate (*Cl). Successful operation of direct seawater electrolysis with improved hydrogen production is demonstrated by employing the 7 Å-nanochanneled RuO₂ as the OER electrocatalyst.
