Pushing Trap-Controlled Persistent Luminescence Materials toward Multi-Responsive Smart Platforms: Recent Advances, Mechanism, and Frontier Applications

Smart stimuli-responsive persistent luminescence materials, combining the various advantages and frontier applications prospects, have gained booming progress in recent years. The trap-controlled property and energy storage capability to respond to external multi-stimulations through diverse luminescence pathways make them attractive in emerging multi-responsive smart platforms. This review aims at the recent advances in trap-controlled luminescence materials for advanced multi-stimuli-responsive smart platforms. The design principles, luminescence mechanisms, and representative stimulations, i.e., thermo-, photo-, mechano-, and X-rays responsiveness, are comprehensively summarized. Various emerging multi-responsive hybrid systems containing trap-controlled luminescence materials are highlighted. Specifically, temperature dependent trapping and de-trapping performance is discussed, from extreme-low temperature to ultra-high temperature conditions. Emerging applications and future perspectives are briefly presented. It is hoped that this review would provide new insights and guidelines for the rational design and performance manipulation of multi-responsive materials for advanced smart platforms.

Nature-inspired adhesive systems

Many organisms in nature thrive in intricate habitats through their unique bio-adhesive surfaces, facilitating tasks such as capturing prey and reproduction. It's important to note that the remarkable adhesion properties found in these natural biological surfaces primarily arise from their distinct micro- and nanostructures and/or chemical compositions. To create artificial surfaces with superior adhesion capabilities, researchers delve deeper into the underlying mechanisms of these captivating adhesion phenomena to draw inspiration. This article provides a systematic overview of various biological surfaces with different adhesion mechanisms, focusing on surface micro- and nanostructures and/or chemistry, offering design principles for their artificial counterparts. Here, the basic interactions and adhesion models of natural biological surfaces are introduced first. This will be followed by an exploration of research advancements in natural and artificial adhesive surfaces including both dry adhesive surfaces and wet/underwater adhesive surfaces, along with relevant adhesion characterization techniques. Special attention is paid to stimulus-responsive smart artificial adhesive surfaces with tunable adhesive properties. The goal is to spotlight recent advancements, identify common themes, and explore fundamental distinctions to pinpoint the present challenges and prospects in this field.

Toward High Contrast and Noninvasive Fluorescence Switches via an O-Fused Ring 5,7-Dihydroxy-4-methyl-2,2,3-triphenylbenzofuran-6(2H)-one Strategy

An unprecedented O-fused ring 5,7-dihydroxy-4-methyl-2,2,3-triphenylbenzofuran-6(2H)-one (3) was first time synthesized. Further, a series of novel dialkyl/fluoroalkyl derivatives of compound 3, 5,7-dialkoxy/fluoroalkoxy-4-methyl-2,2,3-triphenylbenzofuran-6(2H)-one, were obtained with noninvasive fluorescence switching characteristics and aggregation-induced emission properties. Compared with fluoroalkyl derivatives, the alkyl analogs exhibited a significant bathochromic shift in solid-state fluorescence emission. Notably, these noninvasive fluorescent molecular switches could be facilely tuned through light and heat stimulation, which successfully achieved high contrast and reversible fluorescent emission between orange and yellow endowing them with potential applications in data encryption materials. In addition, the single crystal data of compounds 3 and 7-CF3 displayed weak intermolecular interactions in different directions, resulting in twisted conformation and antiparallel slip stacking. Interestingly, the polymer dimethyl silicone film doped with 7-C3F7 also showed an evident light-responsive behavior, meeting the criterion for fluorescent materials in the optical field.

In Situ X-Ray Techniques Unraveling Charge Distribution Induced by Halogen Bonds in Solvates of an Iodo-Substituted Squaraine Dye

The importance of halogen bonds (XBs) in the regulation of material properties through a variation in the electrostatic potential of the halogen atom is not attracted much attention. Herein, this study utilizes in situ single crystal X-ray diffraction and synchrotron-based X-ray techniques to investigate the cooling-triggered irreversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation of the DMF solvated iodo-substituted squaraine dye (SQD-I). Transformation is observed to be mediated by solvent-involved XB formation and strengthening of electrostatic interaction between adjacent SQD-I molecules. By immersing a DMF solvate in acetonitrile a solvent exchange without loss of long-range ordering is observed. This is attributed to conservation of the molecular charge distribution of SQD-I molecules during the process. The different solvates can be used in combination for temperature-dependent image encryption. This work emphasizes the changes caused by XB formation to the electrostatic potentials of halogen containing molecules and their influence on material properties and presents the potential utility of XBs in the design of soft-porous crystals and luminescent materials.

Dual-Mode Hydrogels with Structural and Fluorescent Colors toward Multistage Secure Information Encryption

Constructing an anti-counterfeiting material with non-interference dual optical modes is an effective way to improve information security. However, it remains challenging to achieve multistage secure information encryption due to the limited stimulus responsiveness and color tunability of the current dual-mode materials. Herein, a dual-mode hydrogel with both independently tunable structural and fluorescent colors toward multistage information encryption, is reported. In this hydrogel system, the rigid lamellar structure of poly(dodecylglyceryl itaconate) (pDGI) formed by shear flow-induced self-assembly provides the restricted domains wherein monomers undergo polymerization to form a hydrogel network, producing structural color. The introduction of fluorescent monomer 6-acrylamidopicolinate (6APA) as a complexation site provides the possibility of fluorescent color formation. The hydrogel's angle-dependent structural color can be controlled by adjusting the crosslinking density and water content. Additionally, the fluorescence color can be modulated by adjusting the ratio of lanthanide ions. Information of dual-mode can be displayed separately in different channels and synergistically overlayed to read the ultimate message. Thus, a multistage information encryption system based on this hydrogel is devised through the programed decryption process. This strategy holds tremendous potential as a platform for encrypting and safeguarding valuable and authentic information in the field of anti-counterfeiting.

Recent advances in tunable solid-state emission based on α-cyanodiarylethenes: from molecular packing regulation to functional development

The design and development of organic solid-state luminescent materials stand as crucial pillars within the realm of contemporary photofunctional materials. Overcoming challenges such as concentration quenching and achieving tailored luminescent properties necessitates a judicious approach to molecular structure design and the strategic utilization of diverse stimuli to modulate molecular packing patterns. Among the myriad candidates, α-cyanodiarylethenes (CAEs) emerge with distinctive solid-state luminescent attributes, capable of forming self-assembled packing structures with varying degrees of π-π stacking. This characteristic endows them with potential in the field of intelligent molecular responsive materials and optoelectronic devices. This tutorial review embarks on an exploration of design strategies geared towards attaining tunable solid-state emission through customized packing of CAEs. It explores the utilization of stimuli responses, including such as mechanical forces, light irradiation, solvent interactions, thermal influences, as well as the utilization of co-assembly methodologies. The overarching aim of this review is to provide a widely applicable platform fostering the flourishing development of modern organic photofunctional materials through integrating principles of molecular engineering, organic optoelectronics, and materials science.

Recent advances in fluorescence and afterglow of CDs in matrices

Carbon dots (CDs) are novel nanomaterials with dimensions less than 10 nm that have attracted much attention due to their outstanding optical properties. However, the development of solid-state fluorescence and afterglow methods has been relatively slow, although the properties of these materials under liquid conditions have been extensively studied. In recent years, embedding CDs in a matrix has been shown to prevent aggregation quenching and inhibit nonradiative transitions, thus realizing solid-state fluorescence and afterglow, which has greatly broadened the research and application areas of CDs. In terms of hydrogen bonding, ionic bonding, covalent bonding and spatial confinement, the interactions between CDs and matrices can effectively realize and improve the solid-state fluorescence and afterglow effects of CDs. Recent applications of CDs in matrices in optoelectronics, information security, sensing, biotherapeutics and imaging are also summarized. Finally, we summarize the challenges and developments of CDs in matrices.

NIR-II Fluorescence Sensor Based on Steric Hindrance Regulated Molecular Packing for In Vivo Epilepsy Visualization

Fluorescence sensing is crucial to studying biological processes and diagnosing diseases, especially in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window with reduced background signals. However, it's still a great challenge to construct "off-on" sensors when the sensing wavelength extends into the NIR-II region to obtain higher imaging contrast, mainly due to the difficult synthesis of spectral overlapped quencher. Here, we present a new fluorescence quenching strategy, which utilizes steric hindrance quencher (SHQ) to tune the molecular packing state of fluorophores and suppress the emission signal. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that large SHQs can competitively pack with fluorophores and prevent their self-aggregation. Based on this quenching mechanism, a novel activatable "off-on" sensing method is achieved via bio-analyte responsive invalidation of SHQ, namely the Steric Hindrance Invalidation geNerated Emission (SHINE) strategy. As a proof of concept, the ClO--sensitive SHQ lead to the bright NIR-II signal release in epileptic mouse hippocampus under the skull and high photon scattering brain tissue, providing the real-time visualization of ClO- generation process in living epileptic mice.

Engineering Nanoplatforms for Theranostics of Atherosclerotic Plaques

Atherosclerotic plaque formation is considered the primary pathological mechanism underlying atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, leading to severe cardiovascular events such as stroke, acute coronary syndromes, and even sudden cardiac death. Early detection and timely intervention of plaques are challenging due to the lack of typical symptoms in the initial stages. Therefore, precise early detection and intervention play a crucial role in risk stratification of atherosclerotic plaques and achieving favorable post-interventional outcomes. The continuously advancing nanoplatforms have demonstrated numerous advantages including high signal-to-noise ratio, enhanced bioavailability, and specific targeting capabilities for imaging agents and therapeutic drugs, enabling effective visualization and management of atherosclerotic plaques. Motivated by these superior properties, various noninvasive imaging modalities for early recognition of plaques in the preliminary stage of atherosclerosis are comprehensively summarized. Additionally, several therapeutic strategies are proposed to enhance the efficacy of treating atherosclerotic plaques. Finally, existing challenges and promising prospects for accelerating clinical translation of nanoplatform-based molecular imaging and therapy for atherosclerotic plaques are discussed. In conclusion, this review provides an insightful perspective on the diagnosis and therapy of atherosclerotic plaques.

Multicolor Photochemical Printing Inside Polymer Matrices for Advanced Photonic Anticounterfeiting

Conventional security inks, generally directly printed on the data page surface, are vulnerable to counterfeiters, thereby raising the risk of chemical structural deciphering. In fact, polymer film-based data pages with customized patterns embedded within polymer matrix, rather than printed on the surface, emerge as a promising solution. Therefore, the key lies in developing fluorophores offering light dose-controlled fluorescent color inside polymer matrices. Though conventional fluorophores often suffer from photobleaching and uncontrolled photoreactions, disqualifying them for this purpose. Herein a diphenanthridinylfumaronitrile-based phototransformers (trans-D5) that undergoes photoisomerization and subsequent photocyclization during photopolymerization of the precursor, successively producing cis- and cyclo-D5 with stepwise redshifted solid-state emissions is developed. The resulting cyclo-D5 exhibits up to 172 nm emission redshift in rigidifying polymer matrices, while trans-D5 experiences a slightly blueshifted emission (≈28 nm), cis-D5 undergoes a modest redshift (≈14 nm). The markedly different rigidochromic behaviors of three D5 molecules within polymer matrices enable multicolor photochemical printing with a broad hue ranging from 38 to 10 via an anticlockwise direction in Munsell color space, yielding indecipherable fluorescent patterns in polymer films. This work provides a new method for document protection and implements advanced security features that are unattainable with conventional inks.

Optical Phenomena in Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials

Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

Solid-Emission-Tunable Squaraine with Thermal-Promoted Aggregate-State Transitions for Fast Thermal History Sensing

Determining thermal history is crucial in many industrial processes, but reliable and sensitive organic thermal history indicators are currently absent. Herein, we report on the development of a squaraine-based fluorescent molecule, DPEA-SQ, for the detection of thermal exposure histories up to 436 K. DPEA-SQ forms multiple single crystals (DPEA-SQ-I, DPEA-SQ-II, and DPEA-SQ-III) with different conformations and aggregate-state packing modes, contributing to their different fluorescence wavelengths, lifetimes, and efficiencies. Interestingly, DPEA-SQ-I and DPEA-SQ-III undergo aggregate-state structural transitions to form the thermodynamically more stable DPEA-SQ-II, which are accompanied by changes in their fluorescence. By taking advantage of similar aggregate-state structural transformations during heating, a high-temperature thermal exposure history of up to 436 K is recorded and reflected by their fluorescence. To demonstrate the potential practical applications of DPEA-SQ, a DPEA-SQ-Powder/PDMS film is prepared and coated on an electric circuit board, which enables real-time monitoring of localized overheating by the naked eye. Additionally, the fluorescence peaks of DPEA-SQ-Powder and DPEA-SQ-Powder/PDMS films remain unchanged after storage at 373 K for 52 days, demonstrating high aggregate-state stability. The fast and reliable responses of this system make it an excellent candidate for the detection of overtemperature traces in electronic components and circuit diagnosis.

Handedness-Inverted and Stimuli-Responsive Circularly Polarized Luminescent Nano/Micromaterials Through Pathway-Dependent Chiral Supramolecular Polymorphism

The precise manipulation of supramolecular polymorphs has been widely applied to control the morphologies and functions of self-assemblies, but is rarely utilized for the fabrication of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials with tailored properties. Here, this work reports that an amphiphilic naphthalene-histidine compound (NIHis) readily self-assembled into distinct chiral nanostructures through pathway-dependent supramolecular polymorphism, which shows opposite and multistimuli responsive CPL signals. Specifically, NIHis display assembly-induced CPL from the polymorphic keto tautomer, which become predominant during enol-keto tautomerization shifting controlled by a bulk solvent effect. Interestingly, chiral polymorphs of nanofiber and microbelt with inverted CPL signals can be prepared from the same NIHis monomer in exactly the same solvent compositions and concentrations by only changing the temperature. The tunable CPL performance of the solid microbelts is realized under multi external physical or chemical stimuli including grinding, acid fuming, and heating. In particular, an emission color and CPL on-off switch based on the microbelt polymorph by reversible heating-cooling protocol is developed. This work brings a new approach for developing smart CPL materials via supramolecular polymorphism engineering.

Aggregation/Crystallization-Induced Emission in Naphthyridine-Based Carbazolyl-Modified Donor-Acceptor Boron Dyes Tunable by Fluorine Atoms

Four donor-acceptor boron difluoride complexes based on the carbazole electron donor and the [1,3,5,2]oxadiazaborinino[3,4-a][1,8]naphthyridine acceptor were designed, synthesized, and systematically spectroscopically investigated in solutions, in dye-doped polymer films, and in the solid states. The dyes exhibit an intense blue to red solid-state emission with photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 59 % in pure dye samples and 86 % in poly(methyl methacrylate) films. All boron complexes show aggregation-induced emission and reversible mechanofluorochromism. The optical properties of these dyes and their solid state luminescence can be tuned by substitution pattern, i. e., the substituents at the naphthyridine unit. Exchange of CH3- for CF3-groups does not only increase the intramolecular charge transfer character, but also provides a crystallization-induced emission enhancement.

Regulable high-contrast mechanofluorochromic enhancement behaviour based on substituent effects

Herein, a facile strategy was established to build mechanoresponsive luminogens with high sensitivity to substituents and positional effects. Even in slightly different structures, distinct optical phenomena, including fluorescence efficiency and mechano-responsive properties, were clearly present. Outstanding mechanical-induced emission enhancement (5-100 times) properties and reversibility makes for promising applications in pressure sensors and OLEDs.

Multi-site isomerization of synergistically regulated stimuli-responsive AIE materials toward multi-level decryption

Stimuli-responsive aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials are highly sensitive and rapidly responsive to external signals, making them ideal solid materials for anti-counterfeiting encryption. However, the limited conformational and packing variations resulting from regio-isomerization with a single substituent restricts the stimuli-responsive behavior of these materials. In this work, several AIE-active regio-structural isomers based on the salicylaldehyde Schiff base scaffold have been straightforwardly obtained through multiple substitutions with bromide and triphenylamine moieties. Solvent-effect experiments demonstrate their different orders of charge-transfer and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer upon photoexcitation, indicating the regulation of excited-state processes via multi-site isomerization. These isomers also demonstrate mechanochromism and acidichromism, allowing for adjustable stimuli-responsive effects. As a demonstration, p-Br-TPA with both mechanochromism and acidichromism can be synergistically utilized for multi-level decryption. This study successfully regulates the evolution of excited states through multi-site isomerization, offering a general approach for achieving tunable stimuli-responsive properties in AIE-active salicylaldehyde Schiff bases toward multi-level decryption.

Multi-stimuli-responsive luminescence enabled by crown ether anchored chiral antimony halide phosphors

Stimuli-responsive optical materials have provided a powerful impetus for the development of intelligent optoelectronic devices. The family of organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides, distinguished by their structural diversity, presents a prospective platform for the advancement of stimuli-responsive optical materials. Here, we have employed a crown ether to anchor the A-site cation of a chiral antimony halide, enabling convenient control and modulation of its photophysical properties. The chirality-dependent asymmetric lattice distortion of inorganic skeletons assisted by a crown ether promotes the formation of self-trapped excitons (STEs), leading to a high photoluminescence quantum yield of over 85%, concomitant with the effective circularly polarized luminescence. The antimony halide enantiomers showcase highly sensitive stimuli-responsive luminescent behaviours towards excitation wavelength and temperature simultaneously, exhibiting a versatile reversible colour switching capability from blue to white and further to orange. In situ temperature-dependent luminescence spectra, time-resolved luminescence spectra and theoretical calculations reveal that the multi-stimuli-responsive luminescent behaviours stem from distinct STEs within zero-dimensional lattices. By virtue of the inherent flexibility and adaptability, these chiral antimony chlorides have promising prospects for future applications in cutting-edge fields such as multifunctional illumination technologies and intelligent sensing devices.

Force-triggered hypso- and bathochromic bidirectional fluorescence switching beyond 120 nm and its anticounterfeiting applications

Achieving high-contrast tricolor emissive regulation of a single-component molecule using a single type of external stimulus is highly desirable but challenging. In the present study, we report a symmetric acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A)-type aggregation-induced emission-active luminogen, which displays a sequential high-contrast fluorescence switching just by anisotropic mechanical grinding. Specifically, upon light grinding, an orange-yellow-to-blue hypsochromic mechanofluorochromic response with a distinct color contrast (change in the maximum emission wavelength, Δλem,max = 122 nm) is noticed, and the slightly ground solid exhibits a blue-to-red high-contrast (Δλem,max = 185 nm) bathochromic mechanofluorochromic conversion upon vigorous grinding. Thus, using a single luminogen developed here, we can realize wide-range (Δλem,max > 100 nm) hypso- and bathochromic fluorescence mechanochromisms simultaneously. The tricolored mechanofluorochromic phenomenon is attributed to two different morphological transitions involving crystalline-to-crystalline and crystalline-to-amorphous states. Furthermore, three information anticounterfeiting systems are developed using the luminogen presented here.

Stimuli-fluorochromic smart organic materials

Smart materials based on stimuli-fluorochromic π-conjugated solids (SFCSs) have aroused significant interest due to their versatile and exciting properties, leading to advanced applications. In this review, we highlight the recent developments in SFCS-based smart materials, expanding beyond organometallic compounds and light-responsive organic luminescent materials, with a discussion on the design strategies, exciting properties and stimuli-fluorochromic mechanisms along with their potential applications in the exciting fields of encryption, sensors, data storage, display, green printing, etc. The review comprehensively covers single-component and multi-component SFCSs as well as their stimuli-fluorochromic behaviors under external stimuli. We also provide insights into current achievements, limitations, and major challenges as well as future opportunities, aiming to inspire further investigation in this field in the near future. We expect this review to inspire more innovative research on SFCSs and their advanced applications so as to promote further development of smart materials and devices.

Remarkable Off-On Tunable Solid-State Luminescence by the Regulation of Pyrene Dimer

It is always a challenge to achieve "off-on" luminescent switch by regulating non-covalent interactions. Herein, we report a unique strategy for constructing high performance "off-on" tunable luminescent materials utilizing a novel molecule (TFPA) consist of pyrene and cyanostilbene. The pristine crystal of TFPA is almost non-emissive. Upon grinding/UV irradiation, an obvious luminescence enhancement is observed. Theoretical and experimental results revealed the underlying mechanism of this intriguing "off-on" switching behavior. The non-emissive crystal consists of ordered H-aggregates, with adjacent two molecules stacked in an anti-parallel manner and no overlapped area in pyrene moieties. When external force is applied by grinding or internal force is introduced through the photoisomerization, the dimer structures are facilitated with shorter intermolecular distances and better overlapping of pyrene moieties. In addition, the "on" state can recover to "off" state under thermal annealing, showing good reversibility and applicability in intelligence material. The present results promote an in-depth insight between packing structure and photophysical property, and offer an effective strategy for the construction of luminescence "off-on" switching materials, toward the development of stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for anti-counterfeiting.

Pressure effects on both fluorescent emission and charge transport properties of organic semiconductors: a computational study

External pressure can regulate the photophysical property and charge transport performance of organic semiconductors, however, the underlying mechanism at the microscopic level is still elusive. Using thermal vibrational correlation function coupled quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics and full quantum charge transfer rate theory, we systematically explore the influence of pressure on fluorescence emission and charge transport behaviours of representative cyclooctatetrathiophene (COTh). It is found that, upon pressurization, the intramolecular configurations of COTh became more twisted, leading to the blue-shifted emission. The fluorescence quantum efficiency (FQE) of COTh crystals decreases monotonically in a wide pressure range of 0-4.38 GPa, because the increase of intermolecular electronic energy transfer rate constant (keet) is larger than the decrease of internal conversion rate constant (kic), and the variation of keet is dominant. The decrease in kic is attributed to the decreasing reorganization energy, reflecting the suppression of the low-frequency flipping vibrations of four thiophene rings and the high-frequency stretching vibrations of central cyclooctatetraene, while the keet increase is due to the simultaneous increase in exciton coupling and spectra overlap. Moreover, we predicted that the hole mobility of COTh increases monotonically by nearly an order of magnitude from 0.39 to 3.00 cm2 V-1 s-1 upon compression, because of the increase in transfer integral and the decrease of charged reorganization energy. Furthermore, its hole mobility exhibits obvious anisotropy. Our work systematically builds the external pressure, molecular packing, luminescence and transport properties relationships of organic semiconductors and provides theoretical guidance for the rational design of pressure responsive organic semiconductors with excellent photoelectric performance.

A Self-Assemble Supramolecular Film with Humidity Visualization Enabled by Clusteroluminescence

Clusteroluminescence (CL) has recently gained significant attention due to its unique through-space interactions associated with a high dependence on the aggregation of subgroups. These distinct features could easily transform the stimuli into visual fluorescence and monitor the fluctuation of the environment but have not received sufficient attention before. In this work, supramolecular films are designed based on the neutralization reaction of anhydride groups and the self-assembly of dynamic covalent disulfide bonds in NaOH aqueous solution. The self-assembly of hydrophilic carboxylate chromophores and hydrophobic disulfide-containing five-membered rings could be observed by the variation of the aggregation state of carboxylate in CL. Furthermore, the dynamic cross-linking films obtained with water-sensitive carboxylate chromophores could alter the aggregation distance stimulated by surrounding water vapor, causing the emission wavelength to change from 534 to 508 nm by varying the relative humidity. This work not only provides an approach to monitor the self-assembly of clusteroluminogens but also offers new strategies for designing stimuli-responsive materials that utilize the intrinsic features of CL.

Photo-Responsive Dynamic Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Materials Based on a Functional Unit Combination Strategy

A rational molecular design strategy facilitates the development of a purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) material system with precisely regulated luminescence properties, which surely promotes its functional integration and intelligent application. Here, a functional unit combination strategy is proposed to design novel RTP molecules combining a folding unit with diverse luminescent cores. The different luminescent cores are mainly responsible for tunable RTP properties, while the folding unit contributes to the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) enhancement, which makes the RTP material design as workable as the building block principle. By this strategy, a series of color/lifetime-tunable RTP materials is achieved with unique photo-responsive RTP enhancement when subjected to UV irradiation, which expands their application scenarios in reusable privacy tags, advanced "4D" encryption, and phase separation analysis of blended polymers. This work suggests a simple and effective strategy to design purely organic RTP materials with tunable color and lifetime, and also provides new application options for photo-responsive dynamic RTP materials.

Biomass-based indole derived fluorescence sensor composited with cellulose paper: Detection of picric acid in food and environment samples

Picric acid (PA) is highly water-soluble, the fact makes it stand out as the most hazardous environment pollutant. Therefore, accurate determination of PA is of great significance for human health and environmental protection. Herein, a novel indole-based fluorescent sensor (H1) with good water solubility and fluorescence stability was reported. H1 exhibited 'turn-off' fluorescence response for PA with fast reaction rate (<30 s), unique specificity and excellent selectivity and high sensitivity (limit of detection = 34 nM). Further, H1 was successfully applied to detect PA in real samples (tap water, Yangtze River, Xuanwu Lake, soil, food, fish and shrimp) with satisfactory recoveries at three spiking levels ranging from 98.0 to 112.0 %. In addition, H1 displayed high biocompatibility in mung beans and fresh blood. Moreover, aiming to attain portable analysis, H1 was composited with biomass cellulose paper (H1-FP) and integrated with smartphone for construction as a solid-state fluorescence platform to achieve fast and visual detection of PA in suit with significant stability, high sensitively and selectivity. The establishment of this sensing approach is expected to offer new insight into rapid, selective, and sensitive detection of major pollutants for food and environmental safety.

Ln-HOF Nanofiber Organogels with Time-Resolved Luminescence for Programmable and Reliable Encryption

Developing tunable luminescent materials for high throughput information storage is highly desired following the explosive growth of global data. Although considerable success has been achieved, achieving programmable information encryption remains challenging due to current signal crosstalk problems. Here, we developed long-lived room-temperature phosphorescent organogels enabled by lanthanum-coordinated hydrogen-bonded organic framework nanofibers for time-resolved information programming. Via modulating coassembled lanthanum concentration and Förster resonance energy transfer efficiency, the lifetimes are prolonged and facilely manipulated (20-644 ms), realizing encoding space enlargement and multichannel data outputs. The aggregated strong interfacial supramolecular bonding endows organogels with excellent mechanical toughness (36.16 MJ m-2) and self-healing properties (95.7%), synergistically achieving photostability (97.6% lifetime retention in 10000 fatigue cycles) via suppressing nonradiative decays. This work presents a lifetime-gated information programmable strategy via lanthanum-coordination regulation that promisingly breaks through limitations of current responsive luminescent materials, opening unprecedented avenues for high-level information encryption and protection.

Self-Assembled Homopolymeric Spherulites from Small Molecules in Solution

Polymeric spherulites are typically formed by melt crystallization: spherulitic growth in solution is rare and requires complex polymers and dilute solutions. Here, we report the mild and unique formation of luminescent spherulites at room temperature via the simple molecule benzene-1,4-dithiol (BDT). Specifically, BDT polymerized into oligomers (PBDT) via disulfide bonds and assembled into uniform supramolecular nanoparticles in aqueous buffer; these nanoparticles were then dissolved back into PBDT in a good solvent (i.e., dimethylformamide) and underwent chain elongation to form spherulites (rPBDT) in 10 min. The spherulite geometry was modulated by changing the PBDT concentration and reaction time. Due to the step-growth polymerization and reorganization of PBDT, these spherulites not only exhibited robust structure but also showed broad clusterization-triggered emission. The biocompatibility and efficient cellular uptake of the spherulites further underscore their value as traceable drug carriers. This system provides a new pathway for designing versatile superstructures with value for hierarchical assembly of small molecules into a complicated biological system.

Nitrogen Atom Induced Contrast Effect on the Mechanofluorochromic Characteristics of Anthracene-Based Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor Fluorescent Molecules

The mechanofluorochromic (MFC) characteristics of anthracene-based acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) fluorescent molecules are explored through a comprehensive investigation of their photophysical behaviors. Six 9,10-diheteroarylanthracene derivatives with varying acceptor groups (pyridin-4-yl, pyridin-3-yl, pyridin-2-yl, pyrimidin-5-yl, pyrazinyl and quinoxalinyl) are synthesized and systematically characterized. The photophysical properties in both solution and solid-state are examined, revealing subtle yet significant influences of the spatial arrangement and number of nitrogen atoms within the acceptor group on fluorescence emission. Single-crystal structures of these compounds provide insights into their steric configurations and intermolecular packing modes, offering valuable insights into the fundamental mechanisms that underlie the observed MFC properties. This study illuminates the intricate interplay between MFC properties and the refined molecular structure, thus presenting promising avenues for the design and advancement of novel MFC materials.

Dynamic Metal-ligand Coordination for Fluorescence Color Regulation of Hydrazone-based Bistable Photoswitches

Achieving effective manipulation of emission color in photoresponsive materials is crucial for various advanced photonic applications. In this study, we designed and synthesized a hydrazone compound 1, ethyl (Z)-2-(2-([2,2':6',2''-terpyridin]-4'-yl)hydrazineylidene)-2-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)acetate, which possesses a push-pull structure incorporating triphenylamine and terpyridine. The emission intensity of compound 1 can be repeatedly switched "off" and "on" by irradiation with visible light and UV light, which induces the isomerization transition between the Z and E forms. In addition, compound 1 is capable of changing its emission wavelength from 540 nm to 607 nm through coordination with different zinc salts in toluene/CH2 Cl2 mixture (v : v=1 : 1). Importantly, we have successfully achieved dynamic manipulation of fluorescence color and intensity by altering the counterions of zinc complexes and switching the isomer from Z to E. Moreover, both compound 1 and its zinc complexes demonstrate remarkable photoswitchable properties with different fluorescence colors in the thin films. Finally, these films with various fluorescence colors were used for the production of luminescent tags.

One-dimensional coordinated polymers of tetraphenylethene pyridine and copper-iodide for fluorescence detection of nitroaromatic explosives

The spatial arrangement of molecules plays a crucial role in determining the macroscopic properties of functional materials. Coordinated polymers (CPs) formed by self-assembly of organic isomeric ligands and metals offer unique performance characteristics. In this study, we present the investigation of a one-dimensional CP, named CIT-E, composed of tetraphenylethene pyridine derivative (TPE-2by-2-E) ligands and copper iodide. The resulting CP exhibits a one-dimensional bead chain structure with exceptional thermal and chemical stability. By leveraging the competitive absorption between CIT-E and the explosive analog 2,4-dinitroaniline, we achieve detection of the explosive through changes in the absorption intensity of the excitation light source and subsequent fluorescence response. The CP demonstrates high selectivity and anti-interference ability in detecting 2,4-dinitroaniline in aqueous solution, with a detection linear range of 0.1 to 300 μM and a detection limit of 0.05 μM, surpassing the national third-level emission standard. These findings highlight the potential of CP CIT-E as a promising material for the detection of explosive nitroaromatic compounds.

A New Strategy to Elevate Absorptivity of AIEgens for Intensified NIR-II Emission and Synergized Multimodality Therapy

High-efficiency absorptivity is crucial for the construction of high-performance luminescent materials, especially the long-wavelength near-infrared II (NIR-II) materials; thus seeking an efficient and universal strategy to elevate the absorptivity is extremely important but is still an intractable challenge. In this work, a simple but efficient design strategy is discovered, involving the introduction of gold(I) unit that could effectively elevate the absorptivity of aggregation-induced-emission luminogens (AIEgens). As a result of the efficient elevation of absorptivity, the representative AIE-active TBTP-Au shows more superior NIR-II (1220 nm) luminescence, much higher photothermal conversion efficiency, and unique intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generating ability compared with that of the TBTP ligand. Taking advantage of these improvements, the fabricated tumor-targeting TBTP-Au-cRGD nanoparticles achieve specific NIR-II tumorous imaging in vivo and exert high-efficiency cancer therapy via the synergistic chemotherapy and photothermal therapy. Thus, this work provides a new and efficient strategy to construct high-absorption luminescent materials and demonstrates the great potential of gold(I)-based AIEgens as multifunctional theranostic agents.

Imaging of Accumulated Mechanical Stresses Using Self-Assembled Layered Conjugated Polymer

When mechanical stresses, such as tensile, compressive, and frictional stresses, are applied to objects by various motions, they are accumulated in materials. Conventional mechanoresponsive materials and sensors detect one-time applied stress. However, the accumulated stresses are not visualized or measured in previous works. The present study demonstrated imaging and sensing of not only one-time but also accumulated tensile, compressive, and frictional stresses. Polyurethane (PU) film was combined with 2D layered polydiacetylene (PDA), a stimuli-responsive color-changing polymer. PDA generally exhibits no color changes with the application of tensile and compression stresses because the molecular motion leading to the color change is not induced by such mechanical stresses. Here the versatile mechanoresponsiveness was achieved using a block copolymer guest partially intercalated in the layered PDA. As the interlayer and outerlayer segments interact with PDA and PU, respectively, the applied stresses to the film are transferred from PU to PDA via the block copolymer guest. The color changes of the film imaged and quantified the accumulated work depending on the number and strength of the applied multiple stresses such as tensile, compressive, and frictional stresses. The design strategy of materials and methodology of sensing can be applied to the development of new sensors for accumulated mechanical stresses in a wide range of length and strength scales.

Solvatochromic behaviour of cyclic dithioether-functionalized triphenylamine ligands and their mechano-responsive Cu(I) coordination polymers

Cu(I)-based coordination polymers (CPs) are known as efficient emissive materials providing an eco-friendly and cost-effective platform for the development of various functional materials and sensors. In addition to the nature of the metal center, organic ligands also play a crucial role in controlling the emissive properties of coordination polymers. Herein, we report on the synthesis of dithiane- and dithiolane-substituted triphenylamine ligands L1 and L2. These ligands were found to be emissive both in the solid state and in solution. In addition, these ligands exhibit solvatochromic behaviour due to the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) phenomenon. Next, coordination behaviour of these ligands was explored with Cu(I)X salts (X = Br and Cl) and four new 1D coordination polymers [{Cu(μ2-X)2Cu}(μ2-L)]n, CP1 (X = Br, L = L1), CP2 (X = Cl, L = L1), CP3 (X = Br, L = L2), and CP4 (X = Cl, L = L2) were synthesized and crystallographically characterized. The emission behaviour of all the CPs suggests ligand-centered transitions. On mechanical grinding, emission maxima (λem) for CP1 and CP2 were blue-shifted, whereas for CP3 and CP4 red-shifts were observed. All CPs were found to emit at 448 nm with increased intensity after grinding. It is supposed that grinding is responsible for a change in the spatial arrangement (dihedral angles) of the phenyl groups of triphenylamine, causing the observed emission shifts. Furthermore, the higher emission intensity after grinding suggests the occurrence of a similar phenomenon as an aggregation-induced quenching in these CPs.

Hypso- or bathochromic phosphorescent mechanochromic mononuclear Cu(I) complexes with a bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether auxiliary ligand

Six phosphorescence-emitting metal-organic mononuclear Cu(I) complexes, namely four quinoline-containing three-coordinate Cu(I) complexes and two N-heterocyclic carbene-containing four-coordinate Cu(I) complexes, have been successfully developed and fully characterized. All these Cu(I) complexes include the same bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether bidentate auxiliary ligand. Significantly, four-coordinate Cu(I) complexes 1 and 2 display typical aggregation-induced emission phenomena. Their solid samples of luminogenic complexes 1-6 emit a variety of different phosphorescence. Furthermore, solid-state phosphorescence of these Cu(I) complexes can be effectively manipulated by external mechanical force. Remarkably, luminophores 1, 2 and 5 exhibit blue-shifted mechanoluminochromism responses, while luminophores 3, 4 and 6 present red-shifted mechanoluminochromism characteristics. All of the observed mechano-responsive phosphorescence changes of solids 1-6 are reversible by the method of solvent fuming. Powder X-ray diffraction results confirm that the reversible mechanically induced phosphorescence changes of complexes 1-6 are due to the mutual transformation of ordered crystalline and metastable amorphous states.

Photoactivation of Solid-State Fluorescence through Controllable Intermolecular [2+2] Photodimerization

Intermolecular [2+2] photodimerization provides a distinctive approach to construct photoresponsive fluorescent materials in a manner of switching on solid-state fluorescence. Herein, we report efficient photoactivation of bright solid-state fluorescence based on controllable intermolecular [2+2] photodimerization reaction of benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxide (BTO) derivatives, which provides a simple and effective way to construct smart photoresponsive solid-state fluorescent materials. Rational choice of substituents in BTO molecular skeleton enables them to efficiently undergo photodimerization through regulating molecular stacking in crystal, and also leads to photoactivation of solid-state fluorescence due to the generation of brightly fluorescent photodimers. This intermolecular photodimerization reaction also offers an effective method to synthesize photostable AIEgens with purely through-space conjugation.

High performance mechano-optoelectronic molecular switch

Highly-efficient molecular photoswitching occurs ex-situ but not to-date inside electronic devices due to quenching of excited states by background interactions. Here we achieve fully reversible in-situ mechano-optoelectronic switching in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of tetraphenylethylene molecules by bending their supporting electrodes to maximize aggregation-induced emission (AIE). We obtain stable, reversible switching across >1600 on/off cycles with large on/off ratio of (3.8 ± 0.1) × 103 and 140 ± 10 ms switching time which is 10-100× faster than other approaches. Multimodal characterization shows mechanically-controlled emission with UV-light enhancing the Coulomb interaction between the electrons and holes resulting in giant enhancement of molecular conductance. The best mechano-optoelectronic switching occurs in the most concave architecture that reduces ambient single-molecule conformational entropy creating artificially-tightened supramolecular assemblies. The performance can be further improved to achieve ultra-high switching ratio on the order of 105 using tetraphenylethylene derivatives with more AIE-active sites. Our results promise new applications from optimized interplay between mechanical force and optics in soft electronics.

High-Temperature, Reversible, and Robust Thermochromic Fluorescence Based on Rb2 MnBr4 (H2 O)2 for Anti-Counterfeiting

Thermochromic fluorescent materials (TFMs) characterized by noticeable emission color variation with temperature have attracted pervasive attention for their frontier application in stimulus-response and optical encryption technologies. However, existing TFMs typically suffer from weak PL reversibility as well as limited mild operating temperature and severe temperature PL quenching. PL switching under extreme conditions such as high temperature will undoubtedly improve encryption security, while it is still challenging for present TFMs. In this work, high-temperature thermochromic fluorescence up to 473 K and robust structural and optical reversibility of 80 cycles are observed in Rb2 MnBr4 (H2 O)2 and related crystals, which is seldom reported for PL changes at such a high temperature. Temperature-driven nonluminous, red and green light emission states can be achieved at specific temperatures and the modulation mechanism is verified by in situ optical and structural measurements and single particle transition. By virtue of this unique feature, a multicolor anti-counterfeiting label based on a broad temperature gradient and multidimensional information encryption applications are demonstrated. This work opens a window for the design of inorganic materials with multi-PL change and the development of advanced encryption strategies with extreme stimuli source.

Hydrochromic Perovskite System with Reversible Blue-Green Color for Advanced Anti-Counterfeiting

The intrinsic instability of halide perovskites toward to external stimulus, has created a competitive advantage for designing stimuli-responsive materials. However, the external environment tuning reversibly fluorescence emission of perovskite system is still limited. In this work, humidity is verified to act as a new option to modulate the emission properties of mixed-halide perovskite. The perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) photoirradiated in dichloromethane are easily and stably redispersed in water, and emit bright fluorescence which is quite different from the original. Moreover, the perovskites confined on glass slide can reversibly switch their fluorescence between blue and green colors under moisture. It is demonstrated that the factors of different solubilities of CsCl and CsBr in water, the structural transformation of perovskites and the confine of glass matrix play key roles in the reversible transformation. Finally, the combination of hydrochromic CsPb(Brx Cly )3 and water-resistant CsPb(Brx Cly )3 -polymethyl methacrylate have been applied in advanced anti-counterfeiting, which greatly improves the information security. This work not only give an insight into the effects of humidity on fluorescence and structures of PNCs, but also offer a new class of hydrochromic PNCs materials based on reversible emission transformation for potential application in sensors, anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Sequential-Stimuli Induced Stepwise-Response of Pyridylpyrenes

Stimuli-responsive materials, especially multi-stimuli-responsive materials, can sense external stimuli such as light, heat, and force, have shown great potential in drug delivery, data storage, encryption, energy-harvesting, and artificial intelligence. Conventional multi-stimuli-responsive materials are sensitive to each independent stimulus, causing losses in the diversity and accuracy of the identification for practical application. Herein, a unique phenomenon of sequential-stimuli induced stepwise-response generated from elaborately designed single-component organic materials is reported, which shows large bathochromic shifts up to 5800 cm-1 under sequential stimuli of force and light. In contrast to multi-stimuli-responsive materials, the response of these materials strictly relies on the sequence of stimuli, allowing logicality, rigidity, and accuracy to be integrated into one single-component material. The molecular keypad lock is built based on these materials, pointing promising to a future for this logical response in significant practical applications. This breakthrough gives a new drive to classical stimuli-responsiveness and provides a fundamental design strategy for new generations of high-performance stimuli-responsive materials.

One stimulus-induced two-step photophysical response with high contrast and tunable switching time for dynamic displaying

One stimulus-induced two-step photophysical response, especially with tunable switching time, is a great challenge for organic chromophores. Herein, a polymorphic material 2,7-DCF could undergo in situ two sequential dual-channel responses upon dichloromethane fuming. Both the appearance color and the fluorescence change from red to yellow to deep red with high contrast. The first step corresponds to a fast amorphous-to-crystalline transformation, while the second is a slow solid-state cocrystallization process. Based on single crystal structures and theoretical calculations, such distinct color changes are mainly attributed to conformation twisting and the electron coupling with incorporated solvent molecule through C-H⋅⋅⋅O interaction. Importantly, the second slow photophysical response could be drastically sped up by seeding strategy, or be totally inhibited. Such characteristics pave a way for the potential applications in dynamic anti-counterfeiting and data encryption. Based on the two-step transformation, polymorph 2,7-DCF-a could achieve a successive four-level response to external stimuli. In contrast, polymorph 2,7-DCF-d exhibits a stepwise hypsochromic fluorescence shift over 100 nm. This study would significantly promote the development of stimuli-sensitive systems from "one stimulus, one-step response" to "one stimulus, two or multi-step response".

Turning enol* emission of SBOH via restricting twisted intramolecular charge transfer behavior by pressure

Stimuli-responsive luminogens with aggregation-induced emission and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) properties have applications in storage devices, anti-counterfeiting, imaging, and sensors. Nevertheless, group rotation appears in twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state, resulting in decreased fluorescence intensity. Inhibiting TICT remains a challenge based on their intrinsic molecular configuration. Herein, we present a simple facile pressure-induced method to restrict the TICT behavior. Steady-state spectroscopy measurement shows that fluorescence enhancement and color shifts can be achieved under high pressure. Combined with in situ high-pressure ultrafast spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, the TICT behavior was restricted in two aspects. The ESIPT process was damaged, hence more particles stored in the E* state, and transferred to the TICT state hardly. Also, the rotation of (E)-dimethyl5-((4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)isophthalate (SBOH) was restricted, significantly increasing the fluorescence intensity. This approach provides a new strategy for the development of stimulus-responsive materials.

Study on ESIPT of salicylaldehyde derivative EQCN in DCM solvent

The fluorescence of salicylaldehyde derivative (EQCN) as an excitation-wavelength-dependent molecule with long-persistent luminescence has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. However, the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process mechanism and optical property associated with photochemical process of EQCN molecule in dichloromethane (DCM) solvent has not been discussed in detail. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) were used to investigate ESIPT process of EQCN molecule in DCM solvent. By optimizing the geometry of the EQCN molecule, the hydrogen bond interaction of EQCN molecule of Enol structure in excited state (S₁ state) is strengthened. The calculated absorption peak and fluorescence peak agree well with the experimental values. Based on the optimized geometric structure, the frontier molecular orbital isosurface (FMOs) were drawn, and the redistribution of electron density in DCM solvent was depicted, which intuitively explain the changes in the photophysical properties of EQCN. Through the calculated potential energy curves (PECs) of EQCN in both DCM solvent and ethanol solvent, the ESIPT process of EQCN was found more likely to occur in ethanol solvents.

Advanced stimuli-responsive membranes for smart separation

Membranes have been extensively studied and applied in various fields owing to their high energy efficiency and small environmental impact. Further conferring membranes with stimuli responsiveness can allow them to dynamically tune their pore structure and/or surface properties for efficient separation performance. This review summarizes and discusses important developments and achievements in stimuli-responsive membranes. The most commonly utilized stimuli, including light, pH, temperature, ions, and electric and magnetic fields, are discussed in detail. Special attention is given to stimuli-responsive control of membrane pore structure (pore size and porosity/connectivity) and surface properties (wettability, surface topology, and surface charge), from the perspective of determining the appropriate membrane properties and microstructures. This review also focuses on strategies to prepare stimuli-responsive membranes, including blending, casting, polymerization, self-assembly, and electrospinning. Smart applications for separations are also reviewed as well as a discussion of remaining challenges and future prospects in this exciting field. This review offers critical insights for the membrane and broader materials science communities regarding the on-demand and dynamic control of membrane structures and properties. We hope that this review will inspire the design of novel stimuli-responsive membranes to promote sustainable development and make progress toward commercialization.

Multiple responses of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene to mechanical stimulation: emission enhancement, piezochromism and negative linear compressibility

The properties of mechanoresponsive materials are mainly affected by intermolecular interaction, in which anisotropic grinding and hydrostatic high-pressure compression are the powerful tools used for modulation. Upon applying high pressure to 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH), the reduced molecular symmetry results in the originally forbidden S₀ → S₁ transition to become allowed that then leads to a 13-times emission enhancement, and π-π interactions result in piezochromism (red-shifted up to 100 nm). With increasing pressure, high-pressure-stiffened H⋯C/C⋯H and H⋯H interactions enable the DPH molecules to generate a NLC mechanical response (9-15 GPa) with K_b = -5.8764 TPa^-1 along the b-axis. As a contrast, upon destroying the intermolecular interactions by grinding, the DPH luminescence blue-shifts from cyan to blue. Based on this research, we investigate a new pressure-induced emission enhancement (PIEE) mechanism and enabled NLC phenomena by controlling weak intermolecular interactions. In-depth research of the evolution of intermolecular interactions has important reference value for developing new fluorescence materials and structural materials.

Multi-Stimuli-Responsive Amphiphilic Pyridinium Salt and Its Application in the Visualization of Level 3 Details in Latent Fingerprints

Organic luminescent materials that can simultaneously achieve multimode mechanochromism and its water-vapor-induced recovery are desirable for practical applications but rarely reported. Herein, an amphiphilic compound, 4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-1-(2-hydroxyethyl)pyridin-1-ium bromide (CPAB), is designed by integrating a lipophilic aromatic unit and hydrophilic end in the molecular architecture. Self-recovered mechanochromism from brown to cyan is observed upon mechanical grinding in air. Comprehensive research by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and single-crystal analysis reveals that the photoluminescence switch originates from the variation in intermolecular hydrogen bonds and molecular packing mode. The amphiphilic nature of CPAB allows water molecules to enter the crystalline lattice, forming two polymorphs of the crystalline phase, namely CPAB-D and CPAB-W. The hydrosoluble CPAB exhibits excellent capability in probing the level 3 details of fingerprints because its lipophilic part can target the fatty acid residues of fingerprints, leading to strong aggregation-induced fluorescence. The research may inspire the design of latent fingerprint developers and application in forensics/anti-counterfeiting.

A ratiometric fluorescent probe based on spiropyran in situ switching for tracking dynamic changes of lysosomal autophagy and anticounterfeiting

Autophagy is the controlled breakdown of cellular components that dysfunctional or nonessential, and the decomposition products are further recycled and synthesized for the normal physiological activities of cells. Lysosomal autophagy has been implicated in cancer, neurological disorders, Parkinson's disease, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a fluorescent probe that can clearly describe the process of lysosomal autophagy. However, there are currently limited fluorescent probes for ratiometric monitoring of the autophagic process in dual channels. To solve this problem, a fluorescent probe based on spiropyran with lysosomal targeting and pH response for ratiometric monitoring the autophagy process of lysosomes were designed. The sensitive response of the probe to pH in vitro was verified by UV and fluorescence spectrum tests. Meanwhile, the probe demonstrated the ability to monitor the intracellular pH fluctuations. In addition, the application of Lyso-SD in the field of anti-counterfeiting has been proposed based on the obvious photoluminescence ability of Lyso-SD under UV irradiation.

Turn-on stimuli-responsive switch: strategies for activating a new fluorescence channel by pressure

The stimulus-responsive smart switching of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features has attracted considerable attention in 4D information encryption, optical sensors and biological imaging. Nevertheless, for some AIE-inactive triphenylamine (TPA) derivatives, activating the fluorescence channel of TPA remains a challenge based on their intrinsic molecular configuration. Here, we took a new design strategy for opening a new fluorescence channel and enhancing AIE efficiency for (E)-1-(((4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)imino)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol. The turn-on methodology employed is based on pressure induction. Combining ultrafast and Raman spectra with high-pressure in situ showed that activating the new fluorescence channel stemmed from restraining intramolecular twist rotation. Twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and intramolecular vibration were restricted, which induced an increase in AIE efficiency. This approach provides a new strategy for the development of stimulus-responsive smart-switch materials.

Wrinkled Interfaces: Taking Advantage of Anisotropic Wrinkling to Periodically Pattern Polymer Surfaces

Periodically patterned surfaces can cause special surface properties and are employed as functional building blocks in many devices, yet remaining challenges in fabrication. Advancements in fabricating structured polymer surfaces for obtaining periodic patterns are accomplished by adopting "top-down" strategies based on self-assembly or physico-chemical growth of atoms, molecules, or particles or "bottom-up" strategies ranging from traditional micromolding (embossing) or micro/nanoimprinting to novel laser-induced periodic surface structure, soft lithography, or direct laser interference patterning among others. Thus, technological advances directly promote higher resolution capabilities. Contrasted with the above techniques requiring highly sophisticated tools, surface instabilities taking advantage of the intrinsic properties of polymers induce surface wrinkling in order to fabricate periodically oriented wrinkled patterns. Such abundant and elaborate patterns are obtained as a result of self-organizing processes that are rather difficult if not impossible to fabricate through conventional patterning techniques. Focusing on oriented wrinkles, this review thoroughly describes the formation mechanisms and fabrication approaches for oriented wrinkles, as well as their fine-tuning in the wavelength, amplitude, and orientation control. Finally, the major applications in which oriented wrinkled interfaces are already in use or may be prospective in the near future are overviewed.

Controllable Aggregation-Induced Emission and Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Behaviors of Bistable [c2] Daisy Chain Rotaxanes for White-Light Emission and Temperature-Sensing Applications

Bistable [c2] daisy chain rotaxanes with respective extended and contracted forms of [c2]A and [c2]B containing a blue-emissive anthracene (AN) donor and orange-emissive indandione-carbazole (IC) acceptor were successfully synthesized via click reaction. Tunable-emission bistable [c2] daisy chain rotaxanes with fluorescence changes from blue to orange, including bright-white-light emissions, could be modulated by the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) processes through altering water fractions and shuttling processes (i.e., acid/base controls). Accordingly, as a result of excellent fine-tuning AIE (at 60% water content of H₂O/THF) and FRET (with a compatible energy transfer of E_FRET = 33.2%) behaviors after the shuttling process (by adding base), the brightest white-light emission at CIE (0.31, 0.37) with a quantum yield of Φ = 15.64% was obtained in contracted [c2]B with good control of molecular shuttling to possess higher photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields and better energy transfer efficiencies (i.e., the manipulation of reduced PET and enhanced FRET processes) due to their intramolecular aggregations of blue AN donors and orange IC acceptors with a proper water content of 60% H₂O. Furthermore, dynamic light-scattering (DLS) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements, along with theoretical calculations, were utilized to investigate and confirm AIE and FRET phenomena of bistable [c2] daisy chain rotaxanes. Especially, both bistable [c2] daisy chain rotaxanes [c2]A and [c2]B and noninterlocked monomer M could be exploited for the applications of ratiometric fluorescence temperature sensing due to the temperature effects on the AIE and FRET features. Based on these desirable bistable [c2] daisy chain rotaxane structures, this work provides a potential strategy for the future applications of tunable multicolor emission and ratiometric fluorescence temperature-sensing materials.

Ring-Expanding Rearrangement of Benzo-Fused Tris-Cycloheptenylenes towards Nonplanar Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

A strongly twisted benzo-fused tris-cycloheptenylene, containing three dibenzosuberenone units fused to a common benzene ring, was subjected to Ramirez olefination and subsequent palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling with 4-substituted phenylboronic acids. The high steric demand within the overcrowded, benzene-rich benzo-fused tris-cycloheptenylenes enforced an unprecedented 1,2-rearrangement upon π-extension during the Suzuki coupling reaction. According to crystal structure analysis, the resulting negatively curved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons consist of two heptagons and one octagon surrounding a central benzene ring as a result of strain release. In the solid state, the materials exhibit a blue to blue-green fluorescence with increased quantum yields and a hypsochromic shift of the emission maxima compared to their respective solutions.
