Dopant-Free Pyrene-Based Hole Transporting Material Enables Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Dopant-free hole transporting materials (HTMs) is significant to the stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we developed a novel star-shape arylamine HTM, termed Py-DB, with a pyrene core and carbon-carbon double bonds as the bridge units. Compared to the reference HTM (termed Py-C), the extension of the planar conjugation backbone endows Py-DB with typical intermolecular π-π stacking interactions and excellent solubility, resulting in improved hole mobility and film morphology. In addition, the lower HOMO energy level of the Py-DB HTM provides efficient hole extraction with reduced energy loss at the perovskite/HTM interface. Consequently, an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.33 % was achieved for dopant-free Py-DB-based PSCs, which is the highest PCE for dopant-free small molecular HTMs in n-i-p configured PSCs. The dopant-free Py-DB-based device also exhibits improved long-term stability, retaining over 90 % of its initial efficiency after 1000 h exposure to 25 % humidity at 60 °C. These findings provide valuable insights and approaches for the further development of dopant-free HTMs for efficient and reliable PSCs.

In Situ Photogenerated Radicals of Hydroxyl Substituted Pyrene-Based Triphenylamines with Enhanced Transport and Free Doping/Post-Oxidation for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

The high-performance hole transporting material (HTM) is one of the most important components for the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) in promoting power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the low conductivity of HTMs and their additional requirements for doping and post-oxidation greatly limits the device performance. In this work, three novel pyrene-based derivatives containing methoxy-substituted triphenylamines units (PyTPA, PyTPA-OH and PyTPA-2OH) are designed and synthesized, where different numbers of hydroxyl groups are connected at the 2- or 2,7-positions of the pyrene core. These hydroxyl groups at the 2- or 2,7-positions of pyrene play a significantly role to enhance the intermolecular interactions that are able to generate in situ radicals with the assistance of visible light irradiation, resulting in enhanced hole transferring ability, as well as an enhanced conductivity and suppressed recombination. These pyrene-core based HTMs exhibit excellent performance in PSCs, which possess a higher PCE than those control devices using the traditional spiro-OMeTAD as the HTM. The best performance can be found in the devices with PyTPA-2OH. It has an average PCE of 23.44% (PCEmax = 23.50%), which is the highest PCE among the reported PSCs with the pyrene-core based HTMs up to date. This research offers a novel avenue to design a dopant-free HTM by the combination of the pyrene core, methoxy triphenylamines, and hydroxy groups.

Adsorption of Pyrene and Arsenite by Micro/Nano Carbon Black and Iron Oxide

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and arsenic (As) are common pollutants co-existing in the environment, causing potential hazards to the ecosystem and human health. How their behaviors are affected by micro/nano particles in the environment are still not very clear. Through a series of static adsorption experiments, this study investigated the adsorption of pyrene and arsenite (As (III)) using micro/nano carbon black and iron oxide under different conditions. The objectives were to determine the kinetics and isotherms of the adsorption of pyrene and As (III) using micro/nano carbon black and iron oxide and evaluate the impact of co-existing conditions on the adsorption. The microstructure of micro/nano carbon black (C 94.03%) is spherical-like, with a diameter of 100-200 nm. The micro/nano iron oxide (hematite) has irregular rod-shaped structures, mostly about 1 µm long and 100-200 nm wide. The results show that the micro/nano black carbon easily adsorbed the pyrene, with a pseudo-second-order rate constant of 0.016 mg/(g·h) and an adsorption capacity of 283.23 μg/g at 24 h. The micro/nano iron oxide easily adsorbed As (III), with a pseudo-second-order rate constant of 0.814 mg/(g·h) and an adsorption capacity of 3.45 mg/g at 24 h. The mechanisms of adsorption were mainly chemical reactions. Micro/nano carbon black hardly adsorbed As (III), but its adsorption capability for pyrene was reduced by the presence of As (III), and this effect increased with an increase in the As (III) concentration. The adsorbed pyrene on the micro/nano black carbon could hardly be desorbed. On the other hand, the micro/nano iron oxide could hardly adsorb the pyrene, but its adsorption capability for As (III) was increased by the presence of pyrene, and this effect increased with an increase in the pyrene concentration. The results of this study provide guidance for the risk management and remediation of the environment when there is combined pollution of PAHs and As.

Synthesis and Properties of Novel Alkyl-Substituted Hexaazacyclophanes and Their Diradical Dications

Radicals based on arylamine cyclophanes can be used as functional materials and show application potential in fields such as synthetic chemistry, molecular electronic components, organic light-emitting diodes, and catalytic chemistry. Using a Buchwald-Hartwig palladium-catalyzed aryl halide amination method, we synthesized a series of neutral hexaazacyclophane compounds 1-3 with different substituents in the meta-meta-meta positions of the phenyl rings. Three characteristic high-spin hexaazacyclophane diradical dications were obtained by two-electron oxidation using AgSbF6: 12·+•2[SbF6]-, 22·+•2[SbF6]-, and 32·+•2[SbF6]-. The electronic structures and physical properties of these compounds were then investigated by 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, superconducting quantum interferometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. The findings provide new ideas for designing radical species with novel physical properties and electronic structures. Importantly, the obtained radical species are not sensitive to air, making them valuable functional materials for practical applications.

The Effects and Toxicity of Different Pyrene Concentrations on Escherichia coli Using Transcriptomic Analysis

Pyrene is a pollutant in the environment and affects the health of living organisms. It is important to understand microbial-mediated pyrene resistance and the related molecular mechanisms due to its toxicity and biodegradability. Due to the unclear response mechanisms of bacteria to PAHs, this study detected the transcriptional changes in Escherichia coli under different pyrene concentrations using transcriptome sequencing technology. Global transcriptome analysis showed that the number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in multiple metabolic pathways increased with increasing concentrations of pyrene. In addition, the effects and toxicity of pyrene on Escherichia coli mainly included the up-regulation and inhibition of genes related to carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport, sulfate reduction, various oxidoreductases, and multidrug efflux pumps. Moreover, we also constructed an association network between significantly differentially expressed sRNAs and key genes and determined the regulatory relationship and key genes of Escherichia coli under pyrene stress. Our study utilized pyrene as an exogenous stress substance to investigate the possible pathways of the bacterial stress response. In addition, this study provides a reference for other related research and serves as a foundation for future research.

1-Ethyl-3,3-di-methyl-spiro-[indoline-2,8'-phenaleno[1,9-fg]chromene]

The title pyrene-fused spiro-pyran derivative, C30H25NO, crystallizes with two mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit with dihedral angles between their fused-ring sub units of 76.20 (8) and 89.38 (9)°. In the crystal, weak C-H⋯π inter-actions link the mol-ecules into a three-dimensional network.

Enhancing Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Upconversion of Pyrene Derivatives for Photoredox Catalysis via Molecular Engineering

Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) has the potential to enhance photoredox catalysis yield. It includes a sensitizer and an annihilator. Efficient and stable annihilators are essential for photoredox catalysis, yet only a few examples are reported. Herein, we designed four novel pyrene annihilators (1, 2, 3 and 4) via introducing aryl-alkynyl groups onto pyrene to systematically modulate their singlet and triplet energies. Coupled with platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP), the TTA-UC efficiency is enhanced gradually as the number of aryl-alkynyl group increases. When combining 4 with palladium tetraphenyl-tetrabenzoporphyrin (PdTPTBP), we achieved the highest red-to-green upconversion efficiency (22.4±0.3 %) (out of a 50 % maximum) so far. Then, this pair was used to activate photooxidation of aryl boronic acid under red light (630 nm), which achieved a great improved reaction yield compared to that activated by green light directly. The results not only provide a design strategy for efficient annihilators, but also show the advantage of applying TTA-UC into improving the photoredox catalysis yield.

Kernel extreme learning with harmonized bat algorithm for prediction of pyrene toxicity in rats

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic pollutants and manufactured substances conferring toxicity to human health. The present study investigated whether pyrene, a type of PAH, harms rats. Our research provides an effective feature selection strategy for the animal dataset from Wenzhou Medical University's Experimental Animal Center to thoroughly examine the impacts of PAH toxicity on rat features. Initially, we devised a high-performance optimization method (SCBA) and added the Sobol sequence, vertical crossover and horizontal crossover mechanisms to the bat algorithm (BA). The SCBA-KELM model, which combines SCBA with the kernel extreme learning machine model (KELM), has excellent accuracy and high stability for selecting features. Benchmark function tests are then used in this research to verify the overall optimization performance of SCBA. In this paper, the feature selection performance of SCBA-KELM is verified using various comparative experiments. According to the results, the features of the genes PXR, CAR, CYP2B1/2 and CYP1A1/2 have the most impact on rats. The SCBA-KELM model's classification performance for the gene dataset was 100%, and the model's precision value for the public dataset was around 96%, as determined by the classification index. In conclusion, the model utilized in this research is anticipated to be a reliable and valuable approach for toxicological classification and assessment.

Remarkable Off-On Tunable Solid-State Luminescence by the Regulation of Pyrene Dimer

It is always a challenge to achieve "off-on" luminescent switch by regulating non-covalent interactions. Herein, we report a unique strategy for constructing high performance "off-on" tunable luminescent materials utilizing a novel molecule (TFPA) consist of pyrene and cyanostilbene. The pristine crystal of TFPA is almost non-emissive. Upon grinding/UV irradiation, an obvious luminescence enhancement is observed. Theoretical and experimental results revealed the underlying mechanism of this intriguing "off-on" switching behavior. The non-emissive crystal consists of ordered H-aggregates, with adjacent two molecules stacked in an anti-parallel manner and no overlapped area in pyrene moieties. When external force is applied by grinding or internal force is introduced through the photoisomerization, the dimer structures are facilitated with shorter intermolecular distances and better overlapping of pyrene moieties. In addition, the "on" state can recover to "off" state under thermal annealing, showing good reversibility and applicability in intelligence material. The present results promote an in-depth insight between packing structure and photophysical property, and offer an effective strategy for the construction of luminescence "off-on" switching materials, toward the development of stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for anti-counterfeiting.

Eclipsed and Twisted Excimers of Pyrene and 2-Azapyrene: How Nitrogen Substitution Impacts Excimer Emission

Due to their unique photophysical and electronic properties, pyrene and its analogues have been the subject of extensive research in recent decades. The propensity of pyrene and its derivatives to form excimers has found wide application in various fields. Nitrogen-substituted pyrene derivatives display similar photophysical properties, but for them, excimer emission has not been reported to date. Here, we use time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations to investigate the low-lying exciton states of dimers of pyrene and 2-azapyrene. The excimer equilibrium structures are determined and the contribution of charge transfer (CT) excitations and intermolecular interactions to the exciton states is disclosed using a diabatization procedure. The study reveals that the dimers formed by the two molecules have quite similar exciton-state patterns, in which the relevant CT contributions govern the formation of excimer states, along with the La/Lb state inversion. In contrast with pyrene, the dipole-dipole interactions in 2-azapyrene stabilize the dark eclipsed excimer structure and increase the barrier for conversion into a bright twisted excimer. It is suggested that these differences in the nitrogen-substituted derivative might influence the excimer emission properties.

New copper carboxyl-ate pyrene dimers: synthesis, crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface analysis and electrochemical characterization

Two new copper dimers, namely, bis-(dimethyl sulfoxide)-tetra-kis-(μ-pyrene-1-carboxyl-ato)dicopper(Cu-Cu), [Cu2(C17H9O2)4(C2H6OS)2] or [Cu2(pyr-COO-)4(DMSO)2] (1), and bis-(di-methyl-formamide)-tetra-kis-(μ-pyrene-1-carboxyl-ato)dicopper(Cu-Cu), [Cu2(C17H9O2)4(C3H7NO)2] or [Cu2(pyr-COO-)4(DMF)2] (2) (pyr = pyrene), were synthesized from the reaction of pyrene-1-carb-oxy-lic acid, copper(II) nitrate and tri-ethyl-amine from solvents DMSO and DMF, respectively. While 1 crystallized in the space group P , the crystal structure of 2 is in space group P21/n. The Cu atoms have octa-hedral geometries, with four oxygen atoms from carboxyl-ate pyrene ligands occupying the equatorial positions, a solvent mol-ecule coordinating at one of the axial positions, and a Cu⋯Cu contact in the opposite position. The packing in the crystal structures exhibits π-π stacking inter-actions and short contacts through the solvent mol-ecules. The Hirshfeld surfaces and two-dimensional fingerprint plots were generated for both compounds to better understand the inter-molecular inter-actions and the contribution of heteroatoms from the solvent ligands to the crystal packing. In addition, a Cu2+/Cu1+ quasi-reversible redox process was identified for compound 2 using cyclic voltammetry that accounts for a diffusion-controlled electron-donation process to the Cu dimer.

A comprehensive analysis of charge transfer effects on donor-pyrene (bridge)-acceptor systems using different substituents

The alternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pyrene has photophysical properties that can be tuned with different donor and acceptor substituents. Recently, a D (donor)-Pyrene (bridge)-A (acceptor) system, DPA, with the electron donor N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA), and the electron acceptor trifluoromethylphenyl (TFM), was investigated by means of time-resolved spectroscopic measurements (J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2021, 12, 2226-2231). DPA shows great promise for potential applications in organic electronic devices. In this work, we used the ab initio second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction method ADC(2) to investigate the excited-state properties of a series of analogous DPA systems, including the originally synthesized DPAs. The additionally investigated substituents were amino, fluorine, and methoxy as donors and nitrile and nitro groups as acceptors. The focus of this work was on characterizing the lowest excited singlet states regarding charge transfer (CT) and local excitation (LE) characters. For the DMA-pyrene-TFM system, the ADC(2) calculations show two initial electronic states relevant for interpreting the photodynamics. The bright S1 state is locally excited within the pyrene moiety, and an S2 state is localized ~0.5 eV above S1 and characterized as a donor to pyrene CT state. HOMO and LUMO energies were employed to assess the efficiency of the DPA compounds for organic photovoltaics (OPVs). HOMO-LUMO and optical gaps were used to estimate power conversion and light-harvesting efficiencies for practical applications in organic solar cells. Considering the systems using smaller D/A substituents, compounds with the strong acceptor NO2 substituent group show enhanced CT and promising properties for use in OPVs. Some of the other compounds with small substituents are also found to be competitive in this regard.

Conformation state-specific monobodies regulate the functions of flexible proteins through conformation trapping

Synthetic binding proteins have emerged as modulators of protein functions through protein-protein interactions (PPIs). Because PPIs are influenced by the structural dynamics of targeted proteins, investigating whether the synthetic-binders-based strategy is applicable for proteins with large conformational changes is important. This study demonstrates the applicability of monobodies (fibronectin type-III domain-based synthetic binding proteins) in regulating the functions of proteins that undergo tens-of-angstroms-scale conformational changes, using an example of the A55C/C77S/V169C triple mutant (Adktm ; a phosphoryl transfer-catalyzing enzyme with a conformational change between OPEN/CLOSED forms). Phage display successfully developed monobodies that recognize the OPEN form (substrate-unbound form), but not the CLOSED form of Adktm . Two OPEN form-specific clones (OP-2 and OP-4) inhibited Adktm kinase activity. Epitope mapping with a yeast-surface display/flow cytometry indicated that OP-2 binds to the substrate-entry side of Adktm , whereas OP-4 binding occurs at another site. Small angle X-ray scattering  coupled with size-exclusion chromatography (SEC-SAXS) indicated that OP-4 binds to the hinge side opposite to the substrate-binding site of Adktm , retaining the whole OPEN-form structure of Adktm . Titration of the OP-4-Adktm complex with Ap5 A, a transition-state analog of Adktm , showed that the conformational shift to the CLOSED form was suppressed although Adktm retained the OPEN-form (i.e., substrate-binding ready form). These results show that OP-4 captures and stabilizes the OPEN-form state, thereby affecting the hinge motion. These experimental results indicate that monobody-based modulators can regulate the functions of proteins that show tens-of-angstroms-scale conformational changes, by trapping specific conformational states generated during large conformational change process that is essential for function exertion.

Charge carrier transport in perylene-based and pyrene-based columnar liquid crystals

Electron and hole transport characteristics were evaluated for perylene-based and pyrene-based compounds using electron-only and hole-only devices. The perylene presented a columnar hexagonal liquid crystal phase at room temperature with strong molecular π-stacking inside the columns. The pyrene crystallizes bellow 166 °C, preserving the close-packed columnar rectangular structure of the mesophase. Photophysical analysis and numerical calculations assisted the interpretation of positive and negative charge carrier mobilities obtained from fitting the space charge limited regime of current vs voltage curves. The pyrene-based material demonstrated an electron mobility two orders of magnitude higher than the perylene one, indicating the potential of this class of materials as electron transporting layer.

A Smart Single-Fluorophore Polymer: Self-Assembly Shapechromic Multicolor Fluorescence and Erasable Ink

A novel smart fluorescent polymer polyethyleneimine-grafted pyrene (PGP) is developed by incorporating four stimuli-triggers at molecular level. The triggers are amphiphilicity, supramolecular host-guest sites, pyrene fluorescence indicator, and reversible chelation sites. PGP exhibits smart deformation and shape-dependent fluorescence in response to external stimuli. It can deform into three typical shapes with a characteristic fluorescence color, namely, spherical core-shell micelles of cyan-green fluorescence, standard rectangular nanosheets of yellow fluorescence, and irregular branches of deep-blue fluorescence. A quasi-reversible deformation between the first two shapes can be dynamically manipulated. Moreover, driven by reversible coordination and the resulting intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer, PGP can be used as an aqueous fluorescence ink with erasable and recoverable properties. The fluorescent patterns printed by PGP ink on paper can be rapidly erased and recovered by simple spraying a sequence of Cu2+ and ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid aqueous solutions. This erase/recover transformation can be repeated multiple times on the same paper. The multiple stimulus responsiveness of PGP makes it have potential applications in nanorobots, sensing, information encryption, and anticounterfeiting.

Pencil Graphite Electrocatalytic Sensors Modified by Pyrene Coated Reduced Graphene Oxide Decorated with Molybdenum Disulfide Nanoroses for Hydrazine and 4-Nitrophenol Detection in Real Water Samples

Novel nanostructured platforms based on Pencil Graphite Electrodes (PGEs), modified with pyrene carboxylic acid (PCA) functionalized Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO), and then decorated by chronoamperometry electrodeposition of MoS2 nanoroses (NRs) (MoS2NRs/PCA-rGO/PGEs) were manufactured for the electrocatalytic detection of hydrazine (N2H4) and 4-nitrophenol, pollutants highly hazardous for environment and human health. The surface morphology and chemistry of the MoS2NRs/PCA-rGO/PGEs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), assessing the coating of the PCA-rGO/PGEs by dense multilayers of NRs. N2H4 and 4-nitrophenol have been monitored by Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV), and the MoS2NRs/PCA-rGO/PGEs electroanalytical properties have been compared to the PGEs, as neat and modified by PCA-rGO. The MoS2NRs/PCA-rGO/PGEs demonstrated a higher electrochemical and electrocatalytic activity, due to their high surface area and conductivity, and very fast heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics at the interphase with the electrolyte. LODs lower than the U.S. EPA recommended concentration values in drinking water, namely 9.3 nM and 13.3 nM, were estimated for N2H4 and 4-nitrophenol, respectively and the MoS2NRs/PCA-rGO/PGEs showed good repeatability, reproducibility, storage stability, and selectivity. The effectiveness of the nanoplatforms for monitoring N2H4 and 4-nitrophenol in tap, river, and wastewater was addressed.

Radial Oxygen Loss from the Roots of Mangrove Seedlings Enhances the Removal of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil poses a significant global environmental concern, particularly in coastal wetlands. Mangrove ecosystems exhibit enormous potential in environmental purification; however, the underlying mechanisms involved in the degradation of pollutants (e.g., PAHs) remain ambiguous. In the present investigation, a soil pot experiment was conducted with the addition of pyrene to evaluate the effect of radial oxygen loss (ROL) from roots on PAH degradation using three mangrove seedlings (Rhizophora stylosa, Aegiceras corniculatum, and Avicennia marina). The results showed that mangrove plantation can significantly promote the efficiency of pyrene removal. As for the three mangrove species studied, the greatest removal rate (90.75%) was observed in the soils associated with A. marina, followed by A. corniculatum (83.83%) and R. stylosa (77.15%). The higher PAH removal efficiency of A. marina can be partially attributed to its distinctive root anatomical structure, characterized by a thin exodermis and high porosity, which facilitates ROL from the roots. The results from qPCR further demonstrate that ROL is beneficial for promoting the abundance of PAH-ring hydroxylating dioxygenase gene, leading to a higher removal efficiency. Additionally, Rhizobiales, Defferrisomatales, and Ardenticatenales may also play important roles in the process of pyrene degradation. In summary, this study provides evidence for elucidating the mechanism of PAH removal from the perspective of ROL, thereby contributing valuable insights for species selection during mangrove restoration and remediation.

Effect of Methyl Groups on Formation of Ordered or Layered Graphitic Materials from Aromatic Molecules

Developing functionally complex carbon materials from small aromatic molecules requires an understanding of how the chemistry and structure of its constituent molecules evolve and crosslink, to achieve a tailorable set of functional properties. Here, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to isolate the effect of methyl groups on condensation reactions during the oxidative process and evaluate the impact on elastic modulus by considering three monodisperse pyrene-based systems with increasing methyl group fraction. A parameter to quantify the reaction progression is designed by computing the number of new covalent bonds formed. Utilizing the previously developed MD framework, it is found that increasing methylation leads to an almost doubling of bond formation, a larger fraction of the new bonds oriented in the direction of tensile stress, and a higher basal plane alignment of the precursor molecules along the direction of tensile stress, resulting in enhanced tensile modulus. Additionally, via experiments, it is demonstrated that precursors with a higher fraction of methyl groups result in a higher alignment of molecules. Moreover, increased methylation results in the lower spread of single molecule alignment which may lead to smaller variations in tensile modulus and more consistent properties in carbon materials derived from methyl-rich precursors.

The Effect of Linker-to-Metal Energy Transfer on the Photooxidation Performance of an Isostructural Series of Pyrene-Based Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks

The tetratopic linker, 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoic acid)pyrene (H4 TBAPy) along with rare-earth (RE) ions is used for the synthesis of 9 isostructures of a metal-organic framework (MOF) with shp topology, named RE-CU-10 (RE = Y(III), Gd(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), Ho(III), Er(III), Tm(III), Yb(III), and Lu(III)). The synthesis of each RE-CU-10 analogue requires different reaction conditions to achieve phase pure products. Single crystal X-ray diffraction indicates the presence of a RE9 -cluster in Y- to Tm-CU-10, while a RE11 -cluster is observed for Yb- and Lu-CU-10. The photooxidation performance of RE-CU-10 analogues is evaluated, observing competition between linker-to-metal energy transfer versus the generation of singlet oxygen. The singlet oxygen produced is used to detoxify a mustard gas simulant 2-chloroethylethyl sulfide, with half-lives ranging from 4.0 to 5.8 min, some of the fastest reported to date using UV-irradiation and < 1 mol% catalyst, in methanol under O2 saturation.

Fluorescent and Catalytic Properties of a 2D Lamellar Zn Metal-Organic Framework with sql Network Structure

A two-dimensional (2D) lamellar Zn metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF, 1) with a fluorescent 1,6-di(pyridin-3-yl)pyrene (3-DPPy) and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (BDC2-) bridging linkers was prepared and structurally characterized. The chemical formula of 1 is [Zn(μ-3-DPPy)(μ-BDC)]n. The mononuclear Zn(II) ion, acting as a node, is tetrahedrally coordinated with two 3-DPPy and two BDC linkers. The coordination environment of Zn(II) is a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The Zn-MOF is the sql network structure based on topology analysis. The undulated 2D sheets of 1 tightly pack together to form a lamellar structure. The pyrene moieties are parallelly oriented to each other. The Zn-MOF is not porous, possibly because the mononuclear Zn(II) node did not form cluster-based secondary building units due to the less symmetric 3-DPPy. The steady-state fluorescence measurements indicate that the fluorescence signal of the 1 is slightly blue-shifted compared to the free 3-DPPy in the solid state. The excimer emission band at 463 nm for crystalline 3-DPPy is shifted to 447 nm for 1. The value of 447 nm is also a blue-shift value compared to nonsubstituted pyrene crystals (470 nm). Despite its nonporosity, the surface Lewis acidic sites of 1 could catalyze the transesterification of esters. Surface defect sites are responsible for this catalytic activity.

Novel Tripodal Polyamine Tris-Pyrene: DNA/RNA Binding and Photodynamic Antiproliferative Activity

A novel tri-pyrene polyamine (TAL3PYR) bearing net five positive charges at biorelevant conditions revealed strong intramolecular interactions in aqueous medium between pyrenes, characterised by pronounced excimer fluorescence. A novel compound revealed strong binding to ds-DNA and ds-RNA, along with pronounced thermal stabilisation of DNA/RNA and extensive changes in DNA/RNA structure, as evidenced by circular dichroism. New dye caused pronounced ds-DNA or ds-RNA condensation, which was attributed to a combination of electrostatic interactions between 5+ charge of dye and negatively charged polynucleotide backbone, accompanied by aromatic and hydrophobic interactions of pyrenes within polynucleotide grooves. New dye also showed intriguing antiproliferative activity, strongly enhanced upon photo-induced activation of pyrenes, and is thus a promising lead compound for theranostic applications on ds-RNA or ds-DNA targets, applicable as a new strategy in cancer and gene therapy.

Optimising Electrical Interfacing between the Trimeric Copper Nitrite Reductase and Carbon Nanotubes

The immobilization of copper-containing nitrite reductase (NiR) from Alcaligenes faecalis on functionalised multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) electrodes is reported. It is demonstrated that this immobilization is mainly driven by hydrophobic interactions, promoted by the modification of MWCNTs with adamantyl groups. Direct electrochemistry shows high bioelectrochemical reduction of nitrite at the redox potential of NiR with high current density of 1.41 mA cm-2 . Furthermore, the desymmetrization of the trimer upon immobilization induces an independent electrocatalytic behavior for each of the three enzyme subunits, corroborated by an electron-tunneling distance dependence.

Aggregation-Induced Structural Symmetry Breaking Promotes Charge Separation for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Recently, organic semiconductors have received much attention in the field of photocatalysis due to their tunable physicochemical properties. However, organic semiconductor photocatalysts typically suffer from severe charge recombination due to high exciton binding energy. Herein, we found that aggregation of pyrene results in a red-shift of the light absorption from UV to visible light region. Importantly, the aggregation can induce dipole polarization by spontaneous structural symmetry breaking, thus significantly accelerating the separation and transfer of charge carriers. As a result, the pyrene aggregates display enhanced hydrogen photosynthesis activity. Furthermore, the noncovalent interactions allow rational design of physicochemical and electronic properties of pyrene aggregates, further strengthening the charge separation and photocatalytic activity of aggregates. The quantum yield of pyrene aggregates for hydrogen production highly reaches 20.77 % at 400 nm. Moreover, we have also observed pyrene analogues (1-hydroxypyrene, 1-nitropyrene and perylene) after aggregation all display large dipole moments induced by structural symmetry breaking and therefore accelerate the separation of charge carriers, confirming its general principle. This work highlights the achievement of using aggregation-induced structural symmetry breaking to enable the separation and transfer of charge carriers.

Annulative π-Extension by Rh(III)-Catalyzed Ketone-Directed C-H Activation: Rapid Access to Pyrenes and Related PAHs

Annulative π-extension (APEX) reaction has become a powerful tool for the precise synthesis of well-defined polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as nanographene, graphene, and other PAHs possessing unique structure. Herein, an APEX reaction has been realized at the masked bay-region for the efficient and rapid synthesis of valuable PAH, pyrene, bearing substitutions at the most challenging K-region. Rh(III)-catalyzed ketone-directed C-H activation at the peri-position of a naphthyl-derived ketone, alkyne-insertion, intramolecular nucleophilic attack at the carbonyl-group, dehydration, and aromatization steps occurred in one-pot to effectuate the protocol. Employing this strategy, a two-fold APEX reaction on enantiopure BINOL-derived ketones provided access to axially-chiral bipyrene derivatives. The detailed DFT study to support proposed mechanism, and synthesis of helical PAHs like dipyrenothiophene and dipyrenofuran are other highlights of the present study.

Rational Design of Bifunctional Microporous Organic Polymers Containing Anthracene and Triphenylamine Units for Energy Storage and Biological Applications

In this study, we synthesized two conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), An-Ph-TPA and An-Ph-Py CMPs, using the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. These CMPs are organic polymers with p-conjugated skeletons and persistent micro-porosity and contain anthracene (An) moieties linked to triphenylamine (TPA) and pyrene (Py) units. We characterized the chemical structures, porosities, thermal stabilities, and morphologies of the newly synthesized An-CMPs using spectroscopic, microscopic, and N₂ adsorption/desorption isotherm techniques. Our results from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the An-Ph-TPA CMP displayed better thermal stability with T_d10 = 467 °C and char yield of 57 wt% compared to the An-Ph-Py CMP with T_d10 = 355 °C and char yield of 54 wt%. Furthermore, we evaluated the electrochemical performance of the An-linked CMPs and found that the An-Ph-TPA CMP had a higher capacitance of 116 F g^-1 and better capacitance stability of 97% over 5000 cycles at 10 A g^-1. In addition, we assessed the biocompatibility and cytotoxicity of An-linked CMPs using the MTT assay and a live/dead cell viability assay and observed that they were non-toxic and biocompatible with high cell viability values after 24 or 48 h of incubation. These findings suggest that the An-based CMPs synthesized in this study have potential applications in electrochemical testing and the biological field.

Evaluation of the Different Nutritional and Environmental Parameters on Microbial Pyrene Degradation by Mangrove Culturable Bacteria

Mangrove ecosystems play curial roles in providing many ecological services and alleviating global climate change. However, they are in decline globally, mainly threatened by human activities and global warming, and organic pollutants, especially PAHs, are among the crucial reasons. Microbial remediation is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way of alleviating PAH contamination. Therefore, understanding the effects of environmental and nutritional parameters on the biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is significant for the bioremediation of PAH contamination. In the present study, five bacterial strains, designated as Bp1 (Genus Rhodococcus), Sp8 (Genus Nitratireductor), Sp13 (Genus Marinobacter), Sp23 (Genus Pseudonocardia), and Sp24 (Genus Mycolicibacterium), have been isolated from mangrove sediment and their ring hydroxylating dioxygenase (RHD) genes have been successfully amplified. Afterward, their degradation abilities were comprehensively evaluated under normal cultural (monoculture and co-culture) and different nutritional (tryptone, yeast extract, peptone, glucose, sucrose, and NPK fertilizer) and environmental (cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)) parameters, as well with different co-contaminants (phenanthrene and naphthalene) and heavy metals (Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Fe³⁺, Ni²⁺, Mg²⁺, Mn²⁺, and Co²⁺). The results showed that strain Sp24 had the highest pyrene degradation rate (85%) in the monoculture experiment after being cultured for 15 days. Adding nitrogen- and carbon-rich sources, including tryptone, peptone, and yeast extract, generally endorsed pyrene degradation. In contrast, the effects of carbon sources (glucose and sucrose) on pyrene degradation were distinct for different bacterial strains. Furthermore, the addition of NPK fertilizer, SDS, Tween-80, phenanthrene, and naphthalene enhanced the bacterial abilities of pyrene removal significantly (p < 0.05). Heavy metals significantly reduced all bacterial isolates' degradation potentials (p < 0.05). The bacterial consortia containing high bio-surfactant-producing strains showed substantially higher pyrene degradation. Moreover, the consortia of three and five bacterial strains showed more degradation efficiency than those of two bacterial strains. These results provide helpful microbial resources for mangrove ecological remediation and insight into optimized culture strategies for the microbial degradation of PAHs.

Comparative analysis of remediation efficiency and ultrastructural translocalization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Medicago sativa, Helianthus annuus, and Tagetes erecta

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are semi-volatile anthropogenic contaminants that can damage soil fertility and threaten the environment due to their hazardous effects on various ecological parameters. The experimental objective was divided into two parts because PAHs are always present in mixtures. The toxicity of anthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and fluoranthene was examined and investigated the potential of three phytoremediator plants species viz Tagetes erecta, Helianthus annuus, and Medicago sativa for remediation and translocation of individual PAH. PAHs were shown to have inhibitory or stimulating effects on growth, antioxidant properties, and impact on the structure of plant cells. The result showed that M. sativa significantly enhances the removal rate of PAHs in the soil. The dissipation rate reached 96.2% in M. sativa planted soil, followed by H. annuus and T. erecta. Among the plant species, M. sativa exhibited the highest root and shoot concentrations (314.37 and 169.55 mg kg-1), while the lowest concentration was 187.56 and 76.60 mg kg-1 in T. erecta. SEM-EDX and fluorescence micrographs confirmed that pyrene altered plant tissue's ultrastructure and cell viability and was found to be the most toxic and resistant. M. sativa was proven to be the most effective plant for the mitigation of PAHs.

Couette flow fluorescence detected linear dichroism for analytes in lipid bilayers

Membranes are important sites of intermolecular interactions in biological systems. However, they present significant analytical challenges as they contain multiple analytes and are dynamic in nature. In this work, we show how a Jasco J-1500 circular dichroism spectropolarimeter can be used with a microvolume Couette flow cell and appropriate cut-off filters to measure excitation fluorescence detected linear dichroism (FDLD) of fluorophores embedded in liposomal membranes. The result is a spectrum that selectively probes the fluorophore(s) and eliminates the scattering that is apparent in the corresponding flow linear dichroism (LD) spectrum. The FDLD spectrum is opposite in sign from the LD spectrum with relative magnitudes modified by the quantum yields of the transitions. FDLD thus enables analyte orientations to be identified in a membrane. Data for a membrane peptide, gramicidin, and two aromatic analytes, anthracene and pyrene, are presented. Issues with the "leakage" of photons by the long pass filters used is also discussed.

Role of Sterically Bulky Azobenzenes in the Molecular Assembly of Pyrene Derivatives: Rectangular Sheet-like Structures and Their Emission Characteristics

The development of pyrene-based fluorescent assembled systems with desirable emission characteristics by reducing conventional concentration quenching and/or aggregation-induced quenching (ACQ) is highly desirable. In this investigation, we designed a new azobenzene-functionalized pyrene derivative (AzPy) in which sterically bulky azobenzene is linked to pyrene. Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic results before and after molecular assembly indicate that even in a dilute N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution (~10 μM), AzPy molecules experienced significant concentration quenching, whereas the emission intensities of AzPy DMF-H₂O turbid suspensions containing self-assembled aggregates were slightly enhanced and showed similar values regardless of the concentration. The shape and size of sheet-like structures, from incomplete flakes less than one micrometer in size to well-completed rectangular microstructures, could be adjusted by changing the concentration. Importantly, such sheet-like structures exhibit concentration dependence of their emission wavelength from blue to yellow-orange. Comparison with the precursor (PyOH) demonstrates that the introduction of a sterically twisted azobenzene moiety plays an important role in converting the spatial molecular arrangements from H- to J-type aggregation mode. Thus, AzPy chromophores grow into anisotropic microstructures through inclined J-type aggregation and high crystallinity, which are responsible for their unexpected emission characteristics. Our findings provide useful insight into the rational design of fluorescent assembled systems.

Pyrene-Fused Poly-Aromatic Regioisomers: Synthesis, Columnar Mesomorphism, and Optical Properties

π-Extended pyrene compounds possess remarkable luminescent and semiconducting properties and are being intensively investigated as electroluminescent materials for potential uses in organic light-emitting diodes, transistors, and solar cells. Here, the synthesis of two sets of pyrene-containing π-conjugated polyaromatic regioisomers, namely 2,3,10,11,14,15,20,21-octaalkyloxypentabenzo[a,c,m,o,rst]pentaphene (BBPn) and 2,3,6,7,13,14,17,18-octaalkyloxydibenzo[j,tuv]phenanthro [9,10-b]picene (DBPn), is reported. They were obtained using the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling in tandem with Scholl oxidative cyclodehydrogenation reactions from the easily accessible precursors 1,8- and 1,6-dibromopyrene, respectively. Both sets of compounds, equipped with eight peripheral aliphatic chains, self-assemble into a single hexagonal columnar mesophase, with one short-chain BBPn homolog also exhibiting another columnar mesophase at a lower temperature, with a rectangular symmetry; BBPn isomers also possess wider mesophase ranges and higher mesophases' stability than their DBPn homologs. These polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons all show a strong tendency of face-on orientation on the substrate and could be controlled to edge-on alignment through mechanical shearing of interest for their implementation in photoelectronic devices. In addition, both series BBPn and DBPn display green-yellow luminescence, with high fluorescence quantum yields, around 30%. In particular, BBPn exhibit a blue shift phenomenon in both absorption and emission with respect to their DBPn isomers. DFT results were in good agreement with the optical properties and with the stability ranges of the mesophases by confirming the higher divergence from the flatness of DBPn compared with BBPn. Based on these interesting properties, these isomers could be potentially applied not only in the field of fluorescent dyes but also in the field of organic photoelectric semiconductor materials as electron transport materials.

An Atropisomerism Study of Large Cycloarylenes: [n]Cyclo-4,10-Pyrenylenes' Case

An atropisomerism of large cycloarylenes was studied using [n]cyclo-4,10-pyrenylenes (n=6-21) as an illustrative example with two simple assumptions: (1) alternating configurations (R,S,R,S,…) are thermodynamically most stable, and (2) three consecutive identical configurations (R,R,R or S,S,S) are prevented. Ni-mediated coupling of a 5,9-diiodopyrene gave a series of directly-linked cyclic pyrene oligomers in one-pot reaction. As-synthesized cyclic hexamer was assigned as an (R,S,S,R,R,S) structure, converted into an (R,S,R,S,R,S)-form upon heating. Cyclic heptamer consists of two types of C₂ symmetric structures predicted from assumption (2), one of which was convergent to one another by heating. Three atropisomers of cyclic octamer were analyzed from the possible five candidates by means of ¹ H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and the conversion process to (R,S,R,S,R,S,R,S) configurations upon heating was investigated. In total, according to two simple rules, the analysis of atropisomerism could be performed smoothly.

Synthesis and Optical Properties of a Series of Push-Pull Dyes Based on Pyrene as the Electron Donor

Fifteen push-pull dyes comprising the tetracyclic polyaromatic pyrene have been designed and synthesized. The optical properties of the fifteen dyes have been examined in twenty-two solvents of different polarities. Surprisingly, contrarily to what is classically observed for push-pull dyes of D-π-A structures, a negative solvatochromism could be found for numerous dyes. The photoluminescence and thermal properties of the dyes were also examined. Theoretical calculations were carried out to support the experimental results.

Analyte Detection: A Decade of Progress in the Development of Optical/Fluorescent Sensing Probes

The development of selective and sensitive chemical sensors capable of detecting metal ions, anions, neutral species, explosives and hazardous substances, selectively and sensitively has attracted considerable interest of various research groups. The presence of such analytes within the permissible limits is often beneficial, but the excess amounts may lead to lethal effects to both the environment as well as the living organisms. Owing to the toxicity of the heavy metal ions, toxic anions and nitro-aromatics which are main constituents of explosives, the timely detection of these materials is most desirable to ensure safety and security of the mankind. In this personal account, we present several classes of molecular sensors that were specifically designed in our lab during the past decade for detecting several species in solutions, solid state as well as biological media. Modulation of the optical properties in response to the presence of guest species, led to selective and sensitive detection protocols, and was supported by the theoretical studies wherever possible. We have also extended the application of some of these probes for the on-site detection of analytes by developing the paper strips, glass slides and even the wool and cotton fabrics loaded with probes. One such development represents detection of palladium in human urine and blood samples collected from clinical samples. Additionally, the sensing events in some cases have successfully been reproduced in the live cancer cells. Based on the ease and cost-effective synthesis of the molecular probes, we hope that this account shall provide significant information to researchers in understanding the structure dependent sensing capabilities of the molecular probes.

Phenanthridine-pyrene conjugates as fluorescent probes for DNA/RNA and an inactive mutant of dipeptidyl peptidase enzyme

Two novel conjugate molecules were designed: pyrene and phenanthridine-amino acid units with a different linker length between the aromatic fragments. Molecular modelling combined with spectrophotometric experiments revealed that in neutral and acidic buffered water solutions conjugates predominantly exist in intramolecularly stacked conformations because of the π-π stacking interaction between pyrene and phenanthridine moieties. The investigated systems exhibited a pH-dependent excimer formation that is significantly red-shifted relative to the pyrene and phenanthridine fluorescence. While the conjugate with a short linker showed negligible spectrophotometric changes due to the polynucleotide addition, the conjugate with a longer and more flexible linker exhibited a micromolar and submicromolar binding affinity for ds-polynucleotides and inactivated a mutant of dipeptidyl peptidase enzyme E451A. Confocal microscopy revealed that the conjugate with the longer linker entered the HeLa cell membranes and blue fluorescence was visualized as the dye accumulated in the cell membrane.

Zero-Carbon Emission Chemical Method to Remove Formaldehyde without Catalyst by Highly Porous Polymer Composites at Room Temperature

Herein, the fabrication of reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-templated polymer composites for chemical removal of gaseous formaldehyde under ambient conditions is presented. The chemical removal of formaldehyde is achieved by a nucleophilic addition reaction between formaldehyde and aminooxy groups on the polymer chain ends to form the oxime bonds with the only byproduct of H₂ O. RGO is essential since it not only has an ultralarge surface area but also can act as a perfect template for immobilizing pyrene-terminated and aminooxy-functionalized polymers via strong π-π stacking interactions, while melamine foam provides a three-dimensional skeleton for loading RGO/polymer composites to afford a porous 3D structure for efficient formaldehyde removal. Since the oxime bond can be cleaved into aminooxy group in acidic media, the RGO/polymer composite can be regenerated for repeatable usage, which shows an excellent performance of adsorbing 14 mg of formaldehyde by 100 mg of the polymer at ambient condition.

Factors Impacting Invader-Mediated Recognition of Double-Stranded DNA

The development of chemically modified oligonucleotides enabling robust, sequence-unrestricted recognition of complementary chromosomal DNA regions has been an aspirational goal for scientists for many decades. While several groove-binding or strand-invading probes have been developed towards this end, most enable recognition of DNA only under limited conditions (e.g., homopurine or short mixed-sequence targets, low ionic strength, fully modified probe strands). Invader probes, i.e., DNA duplexes modified with +1 interstrand zippers of intercalator-functionalized nucleotides, are predisposed to recognize DNA targets due to their labile nature and high affinity towards complementary DNA. Here, we set out to gain further insight into the design parameters that impact the thermal denaturation properties and binding affinities of Invader probes. Towards this end, ten Invader probes were designed, and their biophysical properties and binding to model DNA hairpins and chromosomal DNA targets were studied. A Spearman's rank-order correlation analysis of various parameters was then performed. Densely modified Invader probes were found to result in efficient recognition of chromosomal DNA targets with excellent binding specificity in the context of denaturing or non-denaturing fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) experiments. The insight gained from the initial phase of this study informed subsequent probe optimization, which yielded constructs displaying improved recognition of chromosomal DNA targets. The findings from this study will facilitate the design of efficient Invader probes for applications in the life sciences.

Preparation of Monoclonal Antibody against Pyrene and Benzo [a]pyrene and Development of Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay for Fish, Shrimp and Crab Samples

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are significant environmental and food pollutants that can cause cancer. In this work, a specific monoclonal antibody (mAb) to identify pyrene (PYR) and benzo [a]pyrene (BaP) was prepared, and an indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunoassay (ic-ELISA) was established to detect PYR and BaP residues in living aquatic products for the first time. The effects of complete antigens with different coupling ratios on the production of high-sensitivity mAb was explored. Under the optimal conditions, the IC₅₀ value was 3.73 ± 0.43 µg/L (n = 5). The limits of detection (LODs) for PYR and BaP in fish, shrimp, and crab ranged from 0.43 to 0.98 µg/L. The average recoveries of the spiked samples ranged from 81.5–101.9%, and the coefficient of variation (CV) was less than 11.7%. The validation of the HPLC-FLD method indicated that the ELISA method set up in this experiment provided a trustworthy tool for PAHs residues detection in aquatic products.

Effects of Lateral Size, Thickness, and Stabilizer Concentration on the Cytotoxicity of Defect-Free Graphene Nanosheets: Implications for Biological Applications

In this work, we apply liquid cascade centrifugation to highly concentrated graphene dispersions produced by liquid-phase exfoliation in water with an insoluble bis-pyrene stabilizer to obtain fractions containing nanosheets with different lateral size distributions. The concentration, stability, size, thickness, and the cytotoxicity profile are studied as a function of the initial stabilizer concentration for each fraction. Our results show that there is a critical initial amount of stabilizer (0.4 mg/mL) above which the dispersions show reduced concentration, stability, and biocompatibility, no matter the lateral size of the flakes.

NIR-II-Excitable Dye-Loaded Nanoemulsions for Two-Photon Microscopy Imaging of Capillary Blood Vessels in the Entire Hippocampal CA1 Region of Living Mice

For in vivo two-photon fluorescence microscopy (2PM) imaging, the development of techniques that can improve the observable depth and temporal resolution is an important challenge to address biological and biomedical concerns such as vascular dynamics in the deep brain (typically the hippocampal region) of living animals. Improvements have been achieved through two approaches: an optical approach using a highly tissue-penetrating excitation laser oscillating in the second near-infrared wavelength region (NIR-II, 1100-1350 nm) and a chemical approach employing fluorescent probes with high two-photon brightness (characterized by the product of the two-photon absorption cross section, σ², and the fluorescence quantum yield, Φ). To integrate these two approaches, we developed a fluorescent dye exhibiting a sufficiently high σ²Φ value of 68 Goeppert-Mayer units at 1100 nm. When a nanoemulsion encapsulating >1000 dye molecules per particle and a 1100 nm laser were employed for 2PM imaging, capillary blood vessels in almost the entire hippocampal CA1 region of the mouse brain (approximately 1.1-1.5 mm below the surface) were clearly visualized at a frame rate of 30 frames s^-1 (averaged over eight frames, practically 3.75 frames s^-1). This observable depth and frame rate are much higher than those in previous reports on 2PM imaging. Furthermore, this nanoemulsion allowed for the visualization of blood vessels at a depth of 1.8 mm, corresponding to the hippocampal dentate gyrus. These results highlight the advantage of combining bright probes with NIR-II lasers. Our probe is a promising tool for studying the vascular dynamics of living animals and related diseases.

Rhamnolipid-Enhanced ZVI-Activated Sodium Persulfate Remediation of Pyrene-Contaminated Soil

In soil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are tightly bound to organic components, but surfactants can effectively transform them from a solid to a liquid phase. In this study, the biosurfactant rhamnolipid (RL) was selected as the eluent; shaking elution in a thermostatic oscillator improved the elution rate of pyrene, and the effects of RL concentration, temperature, and elution time on the elution effect were compared. After four repeated washings, the maximum elution rate was 75.6% at a rhamnolipid concentration of 20 g/L and a temperature of 45 °C. We found that 38 μm Zero-Valent Iron (ZVI) had a higher primary reaction rate (0.042 h^-1), with a degradation rate of 94.5% when 3 g/L ZVI was added to 21 mM Na₂S₂O₈ at 60 °C. Finally, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detected DMPO-OH and DMPO-SO₄ signals, which played a major role in the degradation of pyrene. Overall, these results show that the combination of rhamnolipid elution and persulfate oxidation system effectively remediated pyrene-contaminated soil and provides some implications for the combined remediation with biosurfactants and chemical oxidation.

[Colonization performance and pyrene degradation characteristics of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia PX1]

We screened and identified an endophytic bacterium that could efficiently degrade PAHs, which would expand the library of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) degrading microorganisms and reduce the pollution risk of crops. Its degradation mechanism and colonization performance were preliminarily examined. The results showed that strain PX1 belonged to Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The strain had broad spectrum ability to remove PAHs. In PAH mineral salt (MS) media, almost 100% naphthalene was degraded by strain PX1 after 7-d incubation. In a cultivation system solely containing phenanthrene of 50.0 mg·L^-1, pyrene of 20.0 mg·L^-1, fluoranthene of 20.0 mg·L^-1 or benzo[a]pyrene of 10.0 mg·L^-1, the degradation efficiency of phenanthrene, pyrene, fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene by strain PX1 reached 72.6%, 50.7%, 31.9%, and 12.9%, respectively. Pyrene was selected as PAHs model to study the degradation characteristics of strain PX1. Enzyme activity tests showed that the activities of phthalate dioxygenase, catechol-1,2-dioxygenase, and catechol-2,3-dioxygenase in strain PX1 were induced by pyrene. Some metabolic intermediates such as 4,5-epoxypyrene, 4,5-dihydroxypyrene, gentilic acid/protocatechuic acid, salicylic acid, cis-hexadienedioic acid/2-hydroxymyxofuroic acid semialdehyde, cis-2'-carboxyphenylpyruvic acid, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, and salicylaldehyde were detected during the degradation of pyrene by strain PX1. Results of the seed soaking experiment showed that strain PX1 could efficiently colonize in Ipomoea aquatic and Triticum aestivum. After inoculated with strain PX1, the growth of I. aquatic and T. aestivum was significantly increased, and the pyrene concentration in I. aquatic, T. aestivum and MS media was reduced by 29.8%-50.7%, 52.4%-67.1% and 8.0%-15.3%, respectively. Our results suggested that strain PX1 degraded pyrene mainly through 'salicylate pathway' and 'phthalate pathway', and could be colonized into plants and promote plant growth.

Constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) mediates pyrene-induced mice liver inflammatory response with increased serum amyloid A proteins and Th17 cells

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

The constitutive androstane receptor (CAR), a known xenobiotic sensor, plays an important role in drug metabolism by regulating numerous genes. We previously reported that pyrene, an environmental pollutant, is a CAR activator and induces mouse hepatotoxicity via CAR. Here, we investigate the molecular mechanism of inflammatory response in pyrene-caused mice liver injury.

EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH

Effects of pyrene on the liver were investigated in wild-type and CAR knockout (KO) mice. Levels of pyrene and its metabolite were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

KEY RESULTS

Serum amyloid A proteins (SAAs) were dramatically induced in the liver and serum of pyrene-exposed wild-type mice. Interleukin 17 (IL-17)-producing helper T cells (Th17 cells) and IL-17 levels were significantly increased in the liver of pyrene-exposed wild-type mice. Hepatic mRNA levels of inflammatory cytokines including IL-1β, IL-6 and TNFα, and serum IL-6 levels were significantly elevated in pyrene-treated wild-type mice. However, the above induction was not observed in CAR KO mice.

CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS

We demonstrate that CAR plays a crucial role in pyrene-caused mice liver inflammatory response with increased SAAs and Th17 cells. Our results suggest that serum SAAs may be a convenient biomarker for early diagnosis of liver inflammatory response caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including pyrene. CAR and Th17 cells may be potential targets for novel therapeutic strategy for xenobiotic-induced liver inflammatory response.

Pyrene-Based AIE Active Materials for Bioimaging and Theranostics Applications

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a unique research topic and property that can lead to a wide range of applications, including cellular imaging, theranostics, analyte quantitation and the specific detection of biologically important species. Towards the development of the AIE-active materials, many aromatic moieties composed of tetraphenylethylene, anthracene, pyrene, etc., have been developed. Among these aromatic moieties, pyrene is an aromatic hydrocarbon with a polycyclic flat structure containing four fused benzene rings to provide an unusual electron delocalization feature that is important in the AIE property. Numerous pyrene-based AIE-active materials have been reported with the AIE property towards sensing, imaging and theranostics applications. Most importantly, these AIE-active pyrene moieties exist as small molecules, Schiff bases, polymers, supramolecules, metal-organic frameworks, etc. This comprehensive review outlines utilizations of AIE-active pyrene-based materials on the imaging and theranostics studies. Moreover, the design and synthesis of these pyrene-based molecules are delivered with discussions on their future scopes.

A new mitochondrial probe combining pyrene and a triphenylphosphonium salt for cellular oxygen and free radical detection via fluorescence lifetime measurements

To improve and diversify the quantification of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in mitochondria of single cells, we connected pyrene derivatives (PB) to a triphenylphosphonium salt (TPP⁺) as a mitochondrial vector forming PB-TPP⁺ probes. Two pyrene isomers with the n-butyltriphenylphosphonium moieties attached at their 1- or 2- positions were synthesized and characterized. Using the long fluorescence lifetime of pyrene, it was possible to monitor the variation of cellular free radicals and oxygen and to follow the reversibility of both quenchers in real-time. We compared the behavior of these new probes to the previously published pyrene-probes, functionalized by a mitochondrial-penetrating peptide, allowing their transfer to the mitochondria (Mito-PB) or to the cytosolic membrane for pyrene butyric acid (PBA). The high cellular uptake of the new probes allows cells to be loaded with an initial concentration 40 times lower than that for Mito-PB probes, without inducing perturbations in cell growth. The variation in free radicals and oxygen levels was monitored within cells under different stress conditions through the fluorescence lifetime of the new TPP⁺-based probes giving comparable results to those obtained for MPP-based probes. However, at a loading concentration as low as 25 nM, our technique allows the detection of increased production of free radicals in the mitochondria in the presence of the TPP⁺ vector, a warning to the user of this well-known vector.

Tunable Excimer Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Isohexide Derivatives from Renewable Resources

Organic compounds showing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are at the forefront of novel applications and technologies. Here we show the synthesis and chiroptical properties of pyrene and perylene derivatives of inexpensive chiral scaffolds: isomannide and isosorbide. Low‐intensity ECD spectra were obtained, suggesting the absence of chromophore interaction in the ground state, except in the case of isomannide bis‐perylenecarboxylate, whose ECD spectrum showed a positive exciton couplet. All isomannide derivatives, with the only exception of the one containing a pyrenecarboxylate and a perylenecarboxylate, exhibited excimer CPL spectra, whereas isosorbide derivatives did not show any CPL. Isomannide derivatives bearing two pyrenecarboxylate or two pyrenylacetate groups showed positive CPL emission with dissymmetry factors up to 10⁻², which depends on the conformational freedom of the appended units. The CPL sign, Stokes shift and order of magnitude of dissymmetry factor were reproduced by excited‐state calculations on a representative compound. Interestingly, the mixed derivative containing pyrenic units with different spacing from the isomannide scaffold showed an oppositely signed excimer band with respect to the homo‐substituted derivatives.

Colorimetric detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by using gold nanoparticles

The existence and content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment have gradually received attention because PAHs are widely detected in many sources. Therefore, an effective detection method for PAHs is necessary for further treatment. This study proposes a novel colorimetric detection method based on AuNPs to determine the contents of phenanthrene (Phe) and pyrene (Pyr). Trisodium citrate was used as a reducing agent to synthesize gold nanoparticles, and ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃) was added as a reactant to detect the analyte content. Some assay parameters, such as the concentration of NH₄NO₃ solution, the volume of NH₄NO₃ solution, the concentration of MES buffer solution, the volume of MES buffer solution, and the reaction time influenced the analyte detection ability of AuNPs and were optimized. The limits of detection for Phe and Pyr are 0.06 mg/L and 0.087 mg/L, respectively. In addition, the detection method has good selectivity and anti-interference ability for the target analytes. This colorimetric method was used to detect target analytes in real water (tap water and mineral water) with acceptable results.

[Influence of Artificial Root Exudates and Actual Root Exudates on the Microbial Community in Pyrene-contaminated Soil]

The high-throughput Illumina NovaSeq sequencing method was adopted to study the effect of artificial root exudates and Lolium perenne L. root exudates on the community structure, α and β diversity, and gene function of the bacterial communities in pyrene-contaminated soils to understand the impact of root exudates on microbial communities. The results showed that root exudates did not significantly change the composition of pyrene-contaminated soil bacterial communities. The main dominant bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, etc. The main dominant bacterial genera were Sphingomonas, Lactobacillus, Bacillus, etc. Root exudates changed the relative abundance of dominant species to a different extent and resulted in discriminating bacteria. The genus Lachnospiraceae belonging to Proteobacteria and Ruminiclostridium belonging to Firmicutes were the biomarkers in the artificial root exudates group and the actual root exudate group, respectively. The common discriminating bacteria in both root exudate groups compared to those in the control group were polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs)-degrading bacteria. Root exudates selectively promoted the growth of PAHs-degrading bacteria. Root exudates had little effect on the richness and diversity of the bacterial communities in pyrene-contaminated soil. However, they significantly influenced the soil bacterial community structure, which resulted from significant changes in low-abundance species. The bacterial community structures of the two root exudate groups were similar. Root exudates decreased pyrene concentration in the soil by 14.0% (artificial root exudates) and 8.7% (actual root exudates). The promotion of pyrene degradation affected by root exudates was due to the growth promotion of PAHs-degrading bacteria and the significant increase in the abundance of some functional genes. This research can supply data for the exploration of a rhizoremediation mechanism in PAHs-contaminated soils.

Aceclofenac-loaded pluronic F108/L81 mixed polymeric micelles: effect of HLB on solubilization

Pluronic block copolymers have phase behavioural characteristics which are extensively studied for drug delivery applications. In this study, we explored hydrophilic pluronic F108 (HLB = 27), hydrophobic pluronic L81 (HLB = 2) and their mixed micelles acting as solubilising mediums for model drug aceclofenac. The drug solubilisation and interactions have been analysed using UV-visible spectroscopy, Fluorescence spectroscopy, Rheology studies, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscope, Dynamic light scattering, Cloud point and partition coefficient measurements. The investigation from UV-spectrophotometry demonstrated that mixed pluronic entrapped greater number of aceclofenac molecules than both the neat pluronics at same concentration. Excimer formation was evidenced from fluorescence spectra with pyrene as a probe. The rheological studies showed difference in viscosity over low shear range. Studies on FTIR demonstrated probable bonding between the aceclofenac and mixed pluronic molecules. The DLS studies on mixed pluronic showed swelling of micellar diameter from 317.6 nm to 413.5 nm. Thermodynamic parameters of the above system revealed higher partition coefficient value for mixed pluronic and spontaneity in drug solubilisation. This study can be exploited to use a hydrophobic copolymeric micelle in mixed pluronic formulation for better drug solubilisation.

Efficient Photoinduced Electron Transfer from Pyrene-o-Carborane Heterojunction to Selenoviologen for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Reduction of Alkynes

A series of pyrene or pyrene-o-carborane-appendant selenoviologens (Py-SeV²⁺ , Py-Cb-SeV²⁺ ) for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and reduction of alkynes is reported. The efficient photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from electron-rich pyrene-o-carborane heterojunction (Py-Cb) with intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristic to electron-deficient selenoviologen (SeV²⁺ ) (k_ET = 1.2 × 10¹⁰ s^-1 ) endows the accelerating the generation of selenoviologen radical cation (SeV^+• ) compared with Py-SeV²⁺ and other derivatives. The electrochromic/electrofluorochromic devices' (ECD and EFCD) measurements and supramolecular assembly/disassembly processes of SeV²⁺ and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) results show that the PET process can be finely tuned by electrochemical and host-guest chemistry methods. By combination with Pt-NPs catalyst, the Py-Cb-SeV²⁺ -based system shows high-efficiency visible-light-driven HER and highly selective phenylacetylene reduction due to the efficient PET process.

Synthesis and Excimer Formation Properties of Electroactive Polyamides Incorporated with 4,5-Diphenoxypyrene Units

A new dietherpyrene-cored diamine monomer, namely, 4,5-bis(4-aminophenoxy)pyrene, was successful synthesized and formed a series of electroactive polyamides with an aryloxy linkage in a polymer main chain and bearing pyrene chromophore as a pendent group using conventional one-pot polycondensation reactions with commercial aromatic/aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. The resulting polyamides exhibited good solubility in polar organic solvents and, further, can be made into transparent films. They had appropriate levels of thermal stability with moderately high glass-transition values. The dilute NMP solutions of these polyamides exhibited pyrene characteristic fluorescence and also showed a remarkable additional excimer emission peak centered at 475 nm. Electrochemical studies of these polymer films showed that these polyamides have both p- and n-dopable states as a result of the formation of radical cations and anions of the electroactive pyrene moieties.
