Chlorination Enabling a Low-Cost Benzodithiophene-Based Wide-Bandgap Donor Polymer with an Efficiency of over 17

Photoselectively modulating main products by changing the wavelength of visible light over D-π-A-D conjugated polymers

The diversity of catalytic products determines the difficulty of selective product modulation, which usually relies on adjusting the catalyst and reaction conditions to obtain different main products selectively. Herein, we synthesized D-π-A-D conjugated organic polymers (TH-COP) using cyclotriphosphonitrile, alkyne, 2H-benzimidazole, and sulfur units as electron donors, π bridges, electron acceptors, and electron donors, respectively. TH-COP exhibited excellent photoinduced carrier separation and redox ability under different visible light wavelengths, and the main products of its CO2 reduction are CH4 (1000.0 μmol g-1) and CO (837.0 μmol g-1) under 400-420 nm and 420-560 nm, respectively. In addition, TH-COP could completely convert phenylmethyl sulfide to methyl phenyl sulfone at 400-420 nm and diphenyl disulfide at 480-485 nm in yields up to 95 %. This study presents a novel strategy for the targeted fabrication of various main products using conjugated polymers by simply changing the wavelength range of visible light.

Research progress and application of high efficiency organic solar cells based on benzodithiophene donor materials

In recent decades, the demand for clean and renewable energy has grown increasingly urgent due to the irreversible alteration of the global climate change. As a result, organic solar cells (OSCs) have emerged as a promising alternative to address this issue. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the molecular design strategies of benzodithiophene (BDT)-based polymer and small molecule donor materials since their birth, focusing on the development of main-chain engineering, side-chain engineering and other unique molecular design paths. Up to now, the state-of-the-art power conversion efficiency (PCE) of binary OSCs prepared by BDT-based donor materials has approached 20%. This work discusses the potential relationship between the molecular changes of donor materials and photoelectric performance in corresponding OSC devices in detail, thereby presenting a rational molecular design guidance for stable and efficient donor materials in future.

Optimizing Active Layer Morphology of Organic Solar Cells by Constructing Random Copolymers with Simple Third Units

The molecular structure of the polymer PM6 is elaborately modified through random copolymerization by incorporating simple units of either difluoro-substituted thiophene (2FT) or dicyano-substituted thiophene (2CNT). The incorporation of the 2FT unit significantly enhanced the coplanarity of the random copolymers, leading to improved molecular crystallinity, whereas the introduction of the 2CNT unit featured the opposite effect. Thanks to the optimized morphology resembling a fiber-like interpenetrating network structure, the organic solar cells based on PM6-10%2FT:IT4F showed higher and more balanced charge mobilities, achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.65%, which is comparable to that of PM6-based devices. For comparison, the 2CN-series random copolymers-based devices exhibited lower PCEs of ˂12%. Interestingly, a superior PCE close to 19.0% is achieved in PM6:L8-BO:PM6-20%2CN based ternary device due to the significant improvement in open-circuit voltage. This work demonstrates that the crystallinity of donor polymers can be enhanced by introducing simple structural units to strengthen the coplanarity of the backbone, thereby achieving an optimized morphology that promotes favorable charge transport.

Iodinated Electron Acceptor with Significantly Extended Exciton Diffusion Length for Efficient Organic Photovoltaic Cells

Iodination has unlocked new potentials in organic photovoltaics (OPVs). A newly designed and synthesized iodinated non-fullerene acceptor, BO-4I, showcases exceptional excitation delocalization property with the exciton diffusion length increased to 80 nm. The enhanced electron delocalization property is attributed to the larger atomic radius and electron orbit of the iodine atom, which facilitates the formation of intra-moiety excitations in the acceptor phase. This effectively circumvents the charge transfer state-related recombination mechanisms, leading to a substantial reduction in non-radiative energy loss (ΔEnr ). As a result, OPV cell based on PBDB-TF : BO-4I achieves an impressive efficiency of 18.9 % with a notable ΔEnr of 0.189 eV, markedly surpassing their fluorinated counterparts. This contribution highlights the pivotal role of iodination in reducing energy loss, thereby affirming its potential as a key strategy in the development of advanced next-generation OPV cells.

Halogenated Nonfused Ring Electron Acceptor for Organic Solar Cells with a Record Efficiency of over 17

Three nonfused ring electron acceptors (NFREAs), namely, 3TT-C2-F, 3TT-C2-Cl, and 3TT-C2, are purposefully designed and synthesized with the concept of halogenation. The incorporation of F or/and Cl atoms into the molecular structure (3TT-C2-F and 3TT-C2-Cl) enhances the π-π stacking, improves electron mobility, and regulates the nanofiber morphology of blend films, thus facilitating the exciton dissociation and charge transport. In particular, blend films based on D18:3TT-C2-F demonstrate a high charge mobility, an extended exciton diffusion distance, and a well-formed nanofiber network. These factors contribute to devices with a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 17.19%, surpassing that of 3TT-C2-Cl (16.17%) and 3TT-C2 (15.42%). To the best of knowledge, this represents the highest efficiency achieved in NFREA-based devices up to now. These results highlight the potential of halogenation in NFREAs as a promising approach to enhance the performance of organic solar cells.

Constructing High-Performance Ternary Device Using Analogous Polymer Donors

Both ternary copolymerization and ternary blending are effective methods to fine-tune polymer structure and manipulate thin-film morphology to improve device performance. In this work, three D-A-A-A (D: donor, A: acceptor) terpolymer donors (FY1, FY2, and FY3) are synthesized by introducing BDD (1,3-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-5,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione) units into the D-A alternating copolymer PM6 backbone. Owing to the promoted conjugated planarity and excellent absorption of BDD, the obtained terpolymers display an extended absorption range and enhanced π-π stacking orientation, which is a promising third component in ternary device. As a result, the optimal FY1:PM6:BTP-eC9-based ternary device afforded an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 18.52%, owing to the efficient charge transport, negligible energy loss, and suitable domain size. The result provides an efficient method to obtain high-performance polymer solar cells by using analogous polymer donors in ternary device.

Improving the Performance of Layer-by-Layer Organic Solar Cells by n-Doping of the Acceptor Layer

Molecular dopants can effectively improve the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, PM6/BTP-eC9-4Cl-based OSCs are fabricated by a layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition method, and the electron acceptor BTP-eC9-4Cl layer is properly doped by n-type dopant benzyl viologen (BV) or [4-(1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl]dimethyl-amine (N-DMBI-H). The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OSCs increases from 16.80 to 17.61 or 17.84% when the acceptor layer is doped by BV (0.01 wt %) or N-DMBI-H (0.01 wt %), respectively. At the optimal doping concentration, the device exhibits more balanced charge transport, fewer bimolecular recombinations, faster charge separation and transfer, and better stability. This doping strategy has good universality; when the acceptor layer L8-BO of LbL OSCs is doped by 0.01 wt % BV or 0.01 wt % N-DMBI-H, the PCE increases from 17.49 to 18.35 or 18.25%, respectively. All in all, our studies have demonstrated that the doping strategy is effective in enhancing the performance of OSCs.

Trifluoromethyl-Substituted Conjugated Random Terpolymers Enable High-Performance Small and Large-Area Organic Solar Cells Using Halogen-Free Solvent

The advancement of non-fullerene acceptors with crescent-shaped geometry has led to the need for polymer donor improvements. Additionally, there is potential to enhance the photovoltaic parameters in high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs). The random copolymerization method is a straightforward and effective strategy to further optimize photoactive morphology and enhance device performance. However, finding a suitable third component in terpolymers remains a crucial challenge. In this study, a series of terpolymer donors (PTF3, PTF5, PTF10, PTF20, and PTF50) is synthesized by introducing varying amounts of the trifluoromethyl-substituted unit (CF3) into the PM6 polymer backbone. Even subtle changes in the CF3 content can significantly enhance all the photovoltaic parameters due to the optimized energy levels, molecular aggregation/miscibility, and bulk-heterojunction morphology of the photoactive materials. Thus, the best binary OSC based on the PTF5:Y6-BO achieves an outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.2% in the unit cell and a PCE of 11.6% in the sub-module device (aperture size: 54.45 cm2 ), when using halogen-free solvent o-xylene. This work showcases the remarkable potential of the easily accessible CF3 unit as a key constituent in the construction of terpolymer donors in high-performance OSCs.

High-efficiency organic solar cells processed from a real green solvent

The fabrication of organic solar cells (OSCs) depends heavily on the use of highly toxic chlorinated solvents, which are incompatible with industrial manufacturing. The reported alternative solvents such as non-halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons and cyclic ethers are also not really "green" according to the "Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals" of the United Nations. Therefore, processing from real green solvents such as water, alcohols, or anisole will constitute a big breakthrough for OSCs. However, it is fundamentally challenging to obtain high-performance photovoltaic materials processable from these solvents. Herein, we propose the incorporation of a B-N covalent bond, which has a dipole moment of 1.84 Debye, into the conjugated backbone of polymer donors to fabricate high-efficiency OSCs from anisole, a real green and eco-compatible solvent recommended by the United Nations. Based on a newly developed B-N-based polymer, the OSCs with a record-high efficiency of 15.65% in the 0.04 cm² device and 14.01% in the 1.10 cm² device have thus been realized via real green processing.

A Versatile and Low-Cost Polymer Donor Based on 4-Chlorothiazole for Highly Efficient Polymer Solar Cells

Benefiting from the emergence of narrow-band-gap small-molecule acceptors (SMAs), especially "Y" series, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of polymer solar cells (PSCs) is rapidly improved. However, polymer donors with high efficiency, easy synthesis, and good universality are relatively scarce except PBDB-TF and D18. Herein, two polymer donors are designed and synthesized based on 4-chlorothiazole derivatives with simple structures, namely PTz3Cl and PBTTz3Cl. The OSCs based on PBTTz3Cl with slightly weaker intermolecular forces in comparison to PTz3Cl exhibits a decent PCE of 18.38% in blending with SMA L8-BO, owing to its strong donor/acceptor interaction with L8-BO, which shapes suitable phase separation morphology. Further research finds that PBTTz3Cl can exhibit excellent photovoltaic performances with various SMA materials, highlighting its universality. Based on this, ternary PSCs are designed where BTP-eC9 is introduced as a guest into the PBTTz3Cl:L8-BO host system. Thanks to further optimal blend morphology and more balanced charge transport, the PCE is improved up to 19.12%, which is among the highest values for PSCs. This work provides a new design of low-cost electron-deficient units for constructing highly versatile, high-performance polymer donors.

Small-Molecule Electron Transport Layer with Siloxane-Functionalized Side Chains for Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells

Active layer materials with silicone side chains have been broadly reported to have excellent long-term stability in harsh environments. However, the application of conjugated materials with silicone side chains in electron transport layers (ETLs) has rarely been reported. In this research, we synthesized for the first time a siloxane-modified perylene-diimide derivative (PDI-OSi) consisting of a side-chain substituent of siloxane and a conjugated group of perylene-diimide (PDI). The inserted siloxane functional groups not only can strengthen the light transmittance of PDI-OSi but also can remarkably expand its solubility and improve the film-forming ability and air stability of the material. Second, introducing siloxane-containing side chains can dramatically lower the work function and interfacial barrier of the electrode, thereby achieving a favorable ohmic contact. In addition, the moderate surface energy of siloxane functional groups makes PDI-OSi hydrophobic, which is conducive to forming excellent miscibility with hydrophobic active layers to promote charge transfer. When PDI-OSi is used as an ETL in organic solar cells (OSCs), operative exciton dissociation and more favorable surface morphology enable OSCs to realize a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.99%. These results indicate that side-chain engineering with siloxane pendants is a facile strategy for constructing efficient OSCs.

High performance polymerized small molecule acceptor by synergistic optimization on π-bridge linker and side chain

The polymerized small-molecule acceptors have attracted great attention for application as polymer acceptor in all-polymer solar cells recently. The modification of small molecule acceptor building block and the π-bridge linker is an effective strategy to improve the photovoltaic performance of the polymer acceptors. In this work, we synthesized a new polymer acceptor PG-IT2F which is a modification of the representative polymer acceptor PY-IT by replacing its upper linear alkyl side chains on the small molecule building block with branched alkyl chains and attaching difluorene substituents on its thiophene π-bridge linker. Through this synergistic optimization, PG-IT2F possesses more suitable phase separation, increased charge transportation, better exciton dissociation, lower bimolecular recombination, and longer charge transfer state lifetime than PY-IT in their polymer solar cells with PM6 as polymer donor. Therefore, the devices based on PM6:PG-IT2F demonstrated a high power conversion efficiency of 17.24%, which is one of the highest efficiency reported for the binary all polymer solar cells to date. This work indicates that the synergistic regulation of small molecule acceptor building block and π-bridge linker plays a key role in designing and developing highly efficient polymer acceptors.

The modification of small molecule acceptor building block and π−bridge linker is effective to improve photovoltaic performance. Here, the authors replace linear with branched alkyl chains and introduce difluorene-substituted linker to realise all-polymer solar cells with efficiency of 17.24%.

High-Performance Nonfused Ring Electron Acceptors with V-Shaped Side Chains

Motivated by simplifying the synthesis of nonfullerene acceptor and establishing the relation between molecular structure and photovoltaic performance, two isomeric nonfused ring electron acceptors (o-TT-Cl and m-TT-Cl), whose properties can be adjusted by changing the side chains, are designed and synthesized with several high-yield steps. o-TT-Cl with V-shaped side chain induces a dominated J-aggregation and displays much better solubility and more ordered packing than m-TT-Cl with linear side chain. Thus, the o-TT-Cl-based blend film generates better phase morphology and charge transport than m-TT-Cl-based one. Finally, the power conversion efficiency of o-TT-Cl-based devices is 12.84%, which is much higher than that of m-TT-Cl-based ones (6.54%). This work highlights the importance of side chains engineering on improving photovoltaic performance of nonfused ring electron acceptors.

Bihalogenated Thiophene-Based Terpolymers for High-Performance Semitransparent Organic Solar Cells Processed by an Eco-Friendly Solvent and Layer-by-Layer Deposition

The development of photoactive materials simultaneously satisfying high performance, low cost, and eco-friendly processability remains challenging in organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, a synergistic strategy is proposed to design three terpolymers (PM7(ClCl = 0.2), PM7(ClBr = 0.2), and PM7(BrBr = 0.2)) based on bihalogenated thiophenes with relatively low cost, for improving the optical and electrochemical properties, solubility in nontoxic solvents, and crystallinity and miscibility balance. In summary, a bulk-heterojunction (BHJ)-processed device based on PM7(ClCl = 0.2) with 20% dichlorinated thiophene achieves the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.2% using toluene (best PCE ≈ 15.8% on the ternary blend). Moreover, high-performance semitransparent OSCs (ST-OSCs) were fabricated by a combination of layer-by-layer (LBL) and sequential dynamic and static spin-coating techniques according to the molecular weight of PM7(ClCl = 0.2). Using this unique LBL strategy, the PM7(ClCl = 0.2)-MW (H; high molecular weight)-processed ST-OSCs yield a high PCE of 11.5% and an average visible transmittance (AVT) of 27.1% with outstanding tolerance to device reproducibility. By optimizing ST-OSCs with tungsten trioxide as a distributed Bragg reflector, a light utilization efficiency (LUE) of 3.61% is realized with a PCE of 10.8% and an AVT of 33.4% (certified PCE ≈ 11.157%; LUE ≈ 3.73%). This study provides a novel perspective for designing and developing actual photoactive materials for OSC commercialization.

High Performance and Stable Organic Solar Cells Fabricated by Y-Series Small Molecular Materials as the Interfacial Modified Layer

The organic solar cell (OSC) has received tremendous consideration for the impressive increased power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 11% to over 18% in the last decade, but another main parameter, the stability, still needs further study to meet the requirements of commercialization. Generally, the inverted structure device shows more stability than the conventional one owing to the structure characteristics, but even so, the performance and stability of the OSC device still need further improvement because of some undesirable contact between the electron transport layer (typically transition metal oxide like ZnO) and the active layer. Here, three Y-series small molecular acceptor materials (Y6, BTP-eC9, and L8-BO) are used as an interfacial modified layer (IML), which could optimize the interfacial characterization of the devices and thus enhance both the performance and stability. As a result, the insertion of the IML improved the interlayer charge transport capacity by passivating the surface of ZnO, leading to the enhancement of short circuit current density (J_SC), fill factor, and PCE of the OSCs. Furthermore, because of the protection of the IML, the OSCs show outstanding stability compared to the control device (without IML), which could maintain 80% performance of the device over 150 h.

Molecular-Shape-Controlled Nonfused Ring Electron Acceptors for High-Performance Organic Solar Cells with Tunable Phase Morphology

Two nonfused ring electron acceptors (NFREAs), BTh-OC8-2F and DTh-OC8-2F, with different molecular shapes are designed and synthesized. Both acceptors can form planar molecular shapes by the assistance of S···O intramolecular interactions. Differently, BTh-OC8-2F, with a linear molecular backbone and two trans-arranged side chains at the core unit, exhibits much stronger crystallinity than DTh-OC8-2, with a C-shape molecular shape and two cis-arranged steric side chains at the core unit. Thus, the DTh-OC8-2F based blend film displays a better nanoscale phase separation, more suppressed charge recombination, more efficient exciton dissociation, and lower nonradiative energy loss. Organic solar cells based on DTh-OC8-2F can deliver a power conversion efficiency of 14.13%, which is much higher than BTh-OC8-2F based ones (11.95%) and is also one of the highest values reported for organic solar cells based on NFREAs.
