Emerging Electrocatalysts for Water Oxidation under Near-Neutral CO2 Reduction Conditions

Bifunctional Catalysts for CO2 Reduction and O2 Evolution: A Pivotal for Aqueous Rechargeable Zn-CO2 Batteries

The quest for the advancement of green energy storage technologies and reduction of carbon footprint is determinedly rising toward carbon neutrality. Aqueous rechargeable Zn-CO2 batteries (ARZCBs) hold the great potential to encounter both the targets simultaneously, i.e., green energy storage and CO2 conversion to value-added chemicals/fuels. The major descriptor of ARZCBs efficiency is allied with the reactions occurring at cathode during discharging (CO2 reduction) and charging (O2 evolution) which own different fundamental mechanisms and hence mandate the employment of two different catalysts. This presents an overall complex and expensive battery system which requires a concrete solution, while the development and application of a bifunctional cathode catalyst toward both reactions could reduce the complexity and cost and thus can be a pivotal for ARZCBs. However, despite the increasing research interest and ongoing research, a systematic evaluation of bifunctional catalysts is rarely reported. In this review, the need of bifunctional cathode catalysts for ARZCBs and associated challenges with strategies have been critically assessed. A detailed progress examination and understanding toward designing of bifunctional catalyst for ARZCBs have been provided. This review will enlighten the future research approaching boosted performance of ARZCBs through the development of efficient bifunctional cathode catalysts.

Reaction Environment Regulation for Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction in Acids

The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a sustainable route for converting CO2 into value-added fuels and feedstocks, advancing a carbon-neutral economy. The electrolyte critically influences CO2 utilization, reaction rate and product selectivity. While typically conducted in neutral/alkaline aqueous electrolytes, the CO2RR faces challenges due to (bi)carbonate formation and its crossover to the anolyte, reducing efficiency and stability. Acidic media offer promise by suppressing these processes, but the low Faradaic efficiency, especially for multicarbon (C2+) products, and poor electrocatalyst stability persist. The effective regulation of the reaction environment at the cathode is essential to favor the CO2RR over the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and improve long-term stability. This review examines progress in the acidic CO2RR, focusing on reaction environment regulation strategies such as electrocatalyst design, electrode modification and electrolyte engineering to promote the CO2RR. Insights into the reaction mechanisms via in situ/operando techniques and theoretical calculations are discussed, along with critical challenges and future directions in acidic CO2RR technology, offering guidance for developing practical systems for the carbon-neutral community.

Robust Ru-VO2 Bifunctional Catalysts for All-pH Overall Water Splitting

Designing robust bifunctional catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction in all-pH conditions for overall water splitting (OWS) is an effective way to achieve sustainable development. Herein, a composite Ru-VO2 containing Ru-doped VO2 and Ru nanoparticles (NPs) is synthesized, and it shows a high OWS performance in full-pH range due to their synergist effect. In particular, the OER mass activities of Ru-VO2 at 1.53 V (vs RHE) in acidic, alkaline, and PBS solutions are ≈65, 36, and 235 times of commercial RuO2 in the same conditions. The "Ru-VO2 || Ru-VO2 " two-electrode electrolyzer only needs a voltage of 1.515 V (at 10 mA cm-2 ) in acidic water splitting, which can operate stably for 125 h at 10 mA cm-2 without significant voltage decay. In situ Raman spectra and in situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry prove that the OER of Ru-VO2 in acid follows the adsorption evolution mechanism. Density functional theory calculations further reveal the synergistic effect between Ru NP and Ru-doped VO2 , which breaks the hydrogen bond network formed by *OH adsorbed on the Ru single-atom site, and thereby significantly enhances the OER activity. This work provides new insights into the design of novel bifunctional pH-universal catalysts for OWS.

Integrating hydrogen utilization in CO2 electrolysis with reduced energy loss

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction using sustainable energy is a promising approach of synthesizing chemicals and fuels, yet is highly energy intensive. The oxygen evolution reaction is particularly problematic, which is kinetically sluggish and causes anodic carbon loss. In this context, we couple CO2 electrolysis with hydrogen oxidation reaction in a single electrochemical cell. A Ni(OH)2/NiOOH mediator is used to fully suppress the anodic carbon loss and hydrogen oxidation catalyst poisoning by migrated reaction products. This cell is highly flexible in producing either gaseous (CO) or soluble (formate) products with high selectivity (up to 95.3%) and stability (>100 h) at voltages below 0.9 V (50 mA cm-2). Importantly, thanks to the "transferred" oxygen evolution reaction to a water electrolyzer with thermodynamically and kinetically favored reaction conditions, the total polarization loss and energy consumption of our H2-integrated CO2 reduction reaction, including those for hydrogen generation, are reduced up to 22% and 42%, respectively. This work demonstrates the opportunity of combining CO2 electrolysis with the hydrogen economy, paving the way to the possible integration of various emerging energy conversion and storage approaches for improved energy/cost effectiveness.

Lewis Acid Driving Asymmetric Interfacial Electron Distribution to Stabilize Active Species for Efficient Neutral Water Oxidation

Neutral oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with unique reactive environments exhibits extremely slow reaction kinetics, posing significant challenges in the design of catalysts. Herein, a built-in electric field between the tungstate (Ni-FeWO4 ) with adjustable work function and Lewis acid WO3 is elaborately constructed to regulate asymmetric interfacial electron distribution, which promotes electron accumulation of Fe sites in the tungstate. This decelerates the rapid dissolution of Fe under the OER potentials, thereby retaining the active hydroxyl oxide with the optimized OER reaction pathway. Meanwhile, Lewis acid WO3 enhances hydroxyl adsorption near the electrode surface to improve mass transfer. As expected, the optimized Ni-FeWO4 @WO3 /NF self-supporting electrode achieves a low overpotential of 235 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in neutral media and maintains stable operation for 200 h. Furthermore, the membrane electrode assembly constructed by such self-supporting electrode exhibits robust stability for 250 h during neutral seawater electrolysis. This work deepens the understanding of the reconstruction of OER catalysts in neutral environments and paves the way for development of the energy conversion technologies.

Electrochemical Water Oxidation and CO2 Reduction with a Nickel Molecular Catalyst

Mimicking the photosynthesis of green plants to combine water oxidation with CO2 reduction is of great significance for solving energy and environmental crises. In this context, a trinuclear nickel complex, [NiII3(paoH)6(PhPO3)2]·2ClO4 (1), with a novel structure has been constructed with PhPO32- (phenylphosphonate) and paoH (2-pyridine formaldehyde oxime) ligands and possesses a reflection symmetry with a mirror plane revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Bulk electrocatalysis demonstrates that complex 1 can homogeneously catalyze water oxidation and CO2 reduction simultaneously. It can catalyze water oxidation at a near-neutral condition of pH = 7.45 with a high TOF of 12.2 s-1, and the Faraday efficiency is as high as 95%. Meanwhile, it also exhibits high electrocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction towards CO with a TOF of 7.84 s-1 in DMF solution. The excellent electrocatalytic performance of the water oxidation and CO2 reduction of complex 1 could be attributed to the two unique µ3-PhPO32- bridges as the crucial factor for stabilizing the trinuclear molecule as well as the proton transformation during the catalytic process, while the oxime groups modulate the electronic structure of the metal centers via π back-bonding. Therefore, apart from the cooperation effect of the three Ni centers for catalysis, simultaneously, the two kinds of ligands in complex 1 can also synergistically coordinate the central metal, thereby significantly promoting its catalytic performance. Complex 1 represents the first nickel molecular electrocatalyst for both water oxidation and CO2 reduction. The findings in this work open an avenue for designing efficient molecular electrocatalysts with peculiar ligands.

Toward high-efficiency photovoltaics-assisted electrochemical and photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction: Strategy and challenge

The realization of a complete techno-economy through a significant carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction in the atmosphere has been explored to promote a low-carbon economy in various ways. CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RRs) can be induced using sustainable energy, including electric and solar energy, using systems such as electrochemical (EC) CO2RR and photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems. This study summarizes various fabrication strategies for non-noble metal, copper-based, and metal-organic framework-based catalysts with excellent Faradaic efficiency (FE) for target carbon compounds, and for noble metals with low overvoltage. Although EC and PEC systems achieve high energy conversion efficiency with excellent catalysts, they still require external power and lack complete bias-free operation. Therefore, photovoltaics, which can overcome the limitations of these systems, have been introduced. The utilization of silicon and perovskite-based solar cells for photovoltaics-assisted EC (PV-EC) and photovoltaics-assisted PEC (PV-PEC) CO2RR systems are cost-efficient, and the III-V semiconductor photoabsorbers achieved high solar-to-carbon efficiency. This work focuses on PV-EC and PV-PEC CO2RR systems and their components and then summarizes the special cell configurations, including the tandem and stacked structures. Additionally, the study discusses current issues, such as low energy conversion, expensive PV, theoretical limits, and industrial scale-up, along with proposed solutions.

Electrode/Electrolyte Synergy for Concerted Promotion of Electron and Proton Transfers toward Efficient Neutral Water Oxidation

Neutral water oxidation is a crucial half-reaction for various electrochemical applications requiring pH-benign conditions. However, its sluggish kinetics with limited proton and electron transfer rates greatly impacts the overall energy efficiency. In this work, we created an electrode/electrolyte synergy strategy for simultaneously enhancing the proton and electron transfers at the interface toward highly efficient neutral water oxidation. The charge transfer was accelerated between the iridium oxide and in situ formed nickel oxyhydroxide on the electrode end. The proton transfer was expedited by the compact borate environment that originated from hierarchical fluoride/borate anions on the electrolyte end. These concerted promotions facilitated the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) events. Due to the electrode/electrolyte synergy, Ir-O and Ir-OO- intermediates could be directly detected by in situ Raman spectroscopy, and the rate-limiting step of Ir-O oxidation was determined. This synergy strategy can extend the scope of optimizing electrocatalytic activities toward more electrode/electrolyte combinations.

Activity-Stability Balance: The Role of Electron Supply Effect of Support in Acidic Oxygen Evolution

Developing efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers represents a significant challenge. Herein, the cobalt-ruthenium oxide nano-heterostructures are successfully synthesized on carbon cloth (CoO_x /RuO_x -CC) for acidic OER through a simple and fast solution combustion strategy. The rapid oxidation process endows CoO_x /RuO_x -CC with abundant interfacial sites and defect structures, which enhances the number of active sites and the charge transfer at the electrolyte-catalyst interface, promoting the OER kinetics. Moreover, the electron supply effect of the CoO_x support allows electrons to transfer from Co to Ru sites during the OER process, which is beneficial to alleviate the ion leaching and over-oxidation of Ru sites, improving the catalyst activity and stability. As a self-supported electrocatalyst, CoO_x /RuO_x -CC displays an ultralow overpotential of 180 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 for OER. Notably, the PEM electrolyzer using CoO_x /RuO_x -CC as the anode can be operated at 100 mA cm^-2 stably for 100 h. Mechanistic analysis shows that the strong catalyst-support interaction is beneficial to redistribute the electronic structure of RuO bond to weaken its covalency, thereby optimizing the binding energy of OER intermediates and lowering the reaction energy barrier.

Amorphous NiFe Oxide-based Nanoreactors for Efficient Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Synergy engineering is an important way to enhance the kinetic activity of oxygen-evolution-reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Here, we fabricated NiFe amorphous nanoreactor (NiFe-ANR) oxide as OER electrocatalysts via a mild self-catalytic reaction. Firstly, the amorphousness helps transform NiFe-ANR into highly active hydroxyhydroxides, and its many fine-grain boundaries increase active sites. More importantly, as proved by experiments and finite element analysis, the nanoreactor structure alters the spatial curvature and the mass transfer over the catalyst, thereby enriching OH^- in the catalyst surface and inner part. Thus, the catalyst with the structure of amorphous nanoreactors gained excellent activity, far superior to the NiFe catalyst with the structure of crystalline nanoreactor or amorphous non-nanoreactor. This work provides new insights into the applications and mechanisms of amorphousness and nanoreactors, embodying the "1+1>2" synergy of crystalline state and morphology.

Ultrafast materials synthesis and manufacturing techniques for emerging energy and environmental applications

Energy and environmental issues have attracted increasing attention globally, where sustainability and low-carbon emissions are seriously considered and widely accepted by government officials. In response to this situation, the development of renewable energy and environmental technologies is urgently needed to complement the usage of traditional fossil fuels. While a big part of advancement in these technologies relies on materials innovations, new materials discovery is limited by sluggish conventional materials synthesis methods, greatly hindering the advancement of related technologies. To address this issue, this review introduces and comprehensively summarizes emerging ultrafast materials synthesis methods that could synthesize materials in times as short as nanoseconds, significantly improving research efficiency. We discuss the unique advantages of these methods, followed by how they benefit individual applications for renewable energy and the environment. We also highlight the scalability of ultrafast manufacturing towards their potential industrial utilization. Finally, we provide our perspectives on challenges and opportunities for the future development of ultrafast synthesis and manufacturing technologies. We anticipate that fertile opportunities exist not only for energy and the environment but also for many other applications.

α-MnO2/FeCo-LDH on Nickel Foam as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Water Oxidation

The ever-expanding human societies on the one hand and the diminishing fossil fuel resources on the other have driven man to find a suitable, cheap, clean, and accessible source of energy. Water splitting is a good solution to this crisis. Because of the slow kinetics of water oxidation reaction, it is important to select efficient and durable electrocatalysts to improve the reaction kinetics. In this research, α-MnO₂/FeCo-LDH catalysts on nickel foam were developed for water oxidation, which exhibited good catalytic performance and stability in a 0.1 M KOH solution. The electrocatalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal methods and characterized by XRD, FTIR, Raman, SEM, TEM, EDS, and MAP techniques. The proposed modified electrode has large exchange current, low overpotential, and small Tafel slope. Here, only an overpotential of 210 mV is required to achieve a current density of 5 mA cm² with a Tafel slope of 70.4 mV dec^-1 in an alkaline solution.

Transformation mechanism of high-valence metal sites for the optimization of Co- and Ni-based OER catalysts in an alkaline environment: recent progress and perspectives

As an important semi-reaction process in electrocatalysis, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is closely associated with electrochemical hydrogen production, CO₂ electroreduction, electrochemical ammonia synthesis and other reactions, which provide electrons and protons for the related applications. Considering their fundamental mechanism, metastable high-valence metal sites have been identified as real, efficient OER catalytic sites from the recent observation by in situ characterization technology. Herein, we review the transformation mechanism of high-valence metal sites in the OER process, particularly transition metal materials (Co- and Ni-based). In particular, research progress in the transformation process and role of high-valence metal sites to optimize OER performance is summarized. The key challenges and prospects of the design of high-efficiency OER catalysts based on the above-mentioned mechanism and some new in situ characterizations are also discussed.

A Rising 2D Star: Novel MBenes with Excellent Performance in Energy Conversion and Storage

As a flourishing member of the two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial family, MXenes have shown great potential in various research areas. In recent years, the continued growth of interest in MXene derivatives, 2D transition metal borides (MBenes), has contributed to the emergence of this 2D material as a latecomer. Due to the excellent electrical conductivity, mechanical properties and electrical properties, thus MBenes attract more researchers' interest. Extensive experimental and theoretical studies have shown that they have exciting energy conversion and electrochemical storage potential. However, a comprehensive and systematic review of MBenes applications has not been available so far. For this reason, we present a comprehensive summary of recent advances in MBenes research. We started by summarizing the latest fabrication routes and excellent properties of MBenes. The focus will then turn to their exciting potential for energy storage and conversion. Finally, a brief summary of the challenges and opportunities for MBenes in future practical applications is presented.

Structural Reconstruction of Catalysts in Electroreduction Reaction: Identifying, Understanding, and Manipulating

Electroreduction transformation of small molecules (CO₂ , N₂ , and H₂ O) into chemical feedstocks offers a promising approach to eliminate carbon emissions and harness renewable energy. Most cathodic catalysts often undergo structural transformation under operating electroreduction conditions. These structural reconstructions are reflected in changes in their catalytic activity. In-depth understanding of the change of active sites and influence parameters of reconstruction behaviors is an essential precondition for the design of highly efficient catalysts. Despite the previous achievements, comprehensive insight toward the structural evolution mechanism in cathodic catalysts, compared to anode ones, under reaction conditions is still lacking. Herein, an overview of structural reconstruction for cathodic catalysts in terms of fundamental mechanisms, reconstruction process, advanced characterizations, and influencing parameters is provided. On this basis, the typical strategies for manipulating the structural reconfiguration of catalysts are also explicitly discussed from the catalyst structure and working environment. By delivering the mechanism, strategies, insights, and techniques, this review will provide a comprehensive understanding of the structural reconstruction of cathodic catalysts in electroreduction reactions and future guidelines for their rational development.

Recent Progress on Transition Metal Based Layered Double Hydroxides Tailored for Oxygen Electrode Reactions

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), namely, so-called oxygen electrode reactions, are two fundamental half-cell reactions in the energy storage and conversion devices, e.g., zinc–air batteries and fuel cells. However, the oxygen electrode reactions suffer from sluggish kinetics, large overpotential and complicated reaction paths, and thus require efficient and stable electrocatalysts. Transition-metal-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and their derivatives have displayed excellent catalytic performance, suggesting a major contribution to accelerate electrochemical reactions. The rational regulation of electronic structure, defects, and coordination environment of active sites via various functionalized strategies, including tuning the chemical composition, structural architecture, and topotactic transformation process of LDHs precursors, has a great influence on the resulting electrocatalytic behavior. In addition, an in-depth understanding of the structural performance and chemical-composition-performance relationships of LDHs-based electrocatalysts can promote further rational design and optimization of high-performance electrocatalysts. Finally, prospects for the design of efficient and stable LDHs-based materials, for mass-production and large-scale application in practice, are discussed.
