Enzyme-Programmable Microgel Lasers for Information Encoding and Anti-Counterfeiting

A high security coding and anti-counterfeiting method based on the nonlinear magnetization response of superparamagnetic nanomaterials

Traditional coding methods based on graphics and digital or magnetic labels have gradually decreased their anti-counterfeiting because of market popularity. This paper presents a new magnetic anti-counterfeiting coding method. This method uses a high-performance coding material, which, along with small changes to the material itself and the particle size of the superparamagnetic nanomaterials, results in a large difference in the nonlinear magnetization response. This method, which adopts 12-site coding and establishes a screening model by measuring the voltage amplitude of 12-site variables, can code different kinds of products, establishing long-term stable coding and decoding means. Through the anti-counterfeiting experiment of wine, the experiment results show that the authenticity of the coded products can be verified using the self-developed magnetic encoding and decoding system. The new coding technology can verify the anti-counterfeiting of 9000 products, with a single detection accuracy of 97% and a detection time of less than one minute. Moreover, this coding method completely depends on the production batch of the superparamagnetic nanomaterials, which is difficult to imitate, and it provides a new coding anti-counterfeiting technology for related industries with a wide range of potential applications.

Multi-colour room-temperature phosphorescence from fused-ring compounds for dynamic anti-counterfeiting applications

We present a facile strategy to achieve purely organic multi-colour room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) films by doping typical fused-ring compounds into a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix. Such RTP films demonstrate inherent RTP emission ranging from green to red with a long lifetime and high quantum yield (QY) (lifetime: ∼0.56 ms, QY: ∼35.4%). We further exploit such high-performance RTP films for dynamic information encryption.

Photoinduced Transition from Quasi-Two-Dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper to Three-Dimensional Halide Perovskites for the Optical Writing of Multicolor and Light-Erasable Images

Optical data storage, information encryption, and security labeling technologies require materials that exhibit local, pronounced, and diverse modifications of their structure-dependent optical properties under external excitation. Herein, we propose and develop a novel platform relying on lead halide Ruddlesden-Popper phases that undergo a light-induced transition toward bulk perovskite and employ this phenomenon for the direct optical writing of multicolor patterns. This transition causes the weakening of quantum confinement and hence a reduction in the band gap. To extend the color gamut of photoluminescence, we use mixed-halide compositions that exhibit photoinduced halide segregation. The emission of the films can be tuned across the range of 450-600 nm. Laser irradiation provides high-resolution direct writing, whereas continuous-wave ultraviolet exposure is suitable for recording on larger scales. The luminescent images created on such films can be erased during the visualization process. This makes the proposed writing/erasing platform suitable for the manufacturing of optical data storage devices and light-erasable security labels.

Physically Unclonable Holographic Encryption and Anticounterfeiting Based on the Light Propagation of Complex Medium and Fluorescent Labels

Physically unclonable function (PUF) methods have high security, but their wide application is limited by complex encoding, large database, advanced external characterization equipment, and complicated comparative authentication. Therefore, we creatively propose the physically unclonable holographic encryption and anticounterfeiting based on the light propagation of complex medium and fluorescent labels. As far as we know, this is the first holographic encryption and anticounterfeiting method with a fluorescence physically unclonable property. The proposed method reduces the above requirements of traditional PUF methods and significantly reduces the cost. The angle-multiplexed PUF fluorescent label is the physical secret key. The information is encrypted as computer-generated holograms (CGH). Many physical parameters in the system are used as the parameter secret keys. The Diffie-Hellman key exchange algorithm is improved to transfer parameter secret keys. A variety of complex medium hologram generation methods are proposed and compared. The effectiveness, security, and robustness of the method are studied and analyzed. Finally, a graphical user interface (GUI) is designed for the convenience of users. The advantages of this method include lower PUF encoding complexity, effective reduction of the database size, lower requirements for characterization equipment, and direct use of decrypted information without complicated comparative authentication to reduce misjudgment. It is believed that the method proposed in this paper will pave the way for the popularization and application of PUF-based anticounterfeiting and encryption methods.

Spatially Resolved Organic Whispering-Gallery-Mode Hetero-Microrings for High-Security Photonic Barcodes

Whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities featuring distinguishable sharp peaks in a broadband exhibit enormous advantages in the field of miniaturized photonic barcodes. However, such kind of barcodes developed hitherto are primarily based on microcavities wherein multiple gain medias were blended into a single matrix, thus resulting in the limited and indistinguishable coding elements. Here, a surface tension assisted heterogeneous assembly strategy is proposed to construct the spatially resolved WGM hetero-microrings with multiple spatial colors along its circular direction. Through precisely regulating the charge-transfer (CT) strength, full-color microrings covering the entire visible range were effectively acquired, which exhibit a series of sharp and recognizable peaks and allow for the effective construction of high-quality photonic barcodes. Notably, the spatially resolved WGM hetero-microrings with multiple coding elements were finally acquired through heterogeneous nucleation and growth controlled by the directional diffusion between the hetero-emulsion droplets, thus remarkably promoting the security strength and coding capacity of the barcodes. The results would be useful to fabricate new types of organic hierarchical hybrid WGM heterostructures for optical information recording and security labels.

Microcavity- and Microlaser-Based Optical Barcoding: A Review of Encoding Techniques and Applications

Optical microbarcodes have recently received a great deal of interest because of their suitability for a wide range of applications, such as multiplexed assays, cell tagging and tracking, anticounterfeiting, and product labeling. Spectral barcodes are especially promising because they are robust and have a simple readout. In addition, microcavity- and microlaser-based barcodes have very narrow spectra and therefore have the potential to generate millions of unique barcodes. This review begins with a discussion of the different types of barcodes and then focuses specifically on microcavity-based barcodes. While almost any kind of optical microcavity can be used for barcoding, currently whispering-gallery microcavities (in the form of spheres and disks), nanowire lasers, Fabry-Pérot lasers, random lasers, and distributed feedback lasers are the most frequently employed for this purpose. In microcavity-based barcodes, the information is encoded in various ways in the properties of the emitted light, most frequently in the spectrum. The barcode is dependent on the properties of the microcavity, such as the size, shape, and the gain materials. Various applications of these barcodes, including cell tracking, anticounterfeiting, and product labeling are described. Finally, the future prospects for microcavity- and microlaser-based barcodes are discussed.

Monitoring Amyloidogenesis with a 3D Deep-Learning-Guided Biolaser Imaging Array

Amyloidogenesis is a critical hallmark for many neurodegenerative diseases and drug screening; however, identifying intermediate states of protein aggregates at an earlier stage remains challenging. Herein, we developed a peptide-encapsulated droplet microlaser to monitor the amyloidogenesis process and evaluate the efficacy of anti-amyloid drugs. The lasing wavelength changes accordingly with the amyloid peptide folding behaviors and nanostructure conformations in the droplet resonator. A 3D deep-learning strategy was developed to directly image minute spectral shifts through a far-field camera. By extracting 1D color information and 2D features from the laser images, the progression of the amyloidogenesis process could be monitored using arrays of laser images from microdroplets. The training set, validation set, and test set of the multimodal learning model achieved outstanding classification accuracies of over 95%. This study shows the great potential of deep-learning-empowered peptide microlaser yields for protein misfolding studies and paves the way for new possibilities for high-throughput imaging of cavity biosensing.
