Direct Observation of Strong Anomalous Hall Effect and Proximity-Induced Ferromagnetic State in SrIrO3

Charge-Transfer-Induced Interfacial Ferromagnetism in Ferromagnet-Free Oxide Heterostructures

Due to the strong interlayer coupling between multiple degrees of freedom, oxide heterostructures have demonstrated exotic properties that are not shown by their bulk counterparts. One of the most interesting properties is ferromagnetism at the interface formed between "nonferromagnetic" compounds. Here we report on the interfacial ferromagnetic phase induced in the superlattices consisting of the two paramagnetic oxides CaRuO3 (CRO) and LaNiO3 (LNO). By varying the sublayer thickness in the superlattice period, we demonstrate that the ferromagnetic order has been established in both CaRuO3 and LaNiO3 sublayers, exhibiting an identical Curie temperature of ∼75 K. The X-ray absorption spectra suggest a strong charge transfer from Ru to Ni at the interface, triggering superexchange interactions between Ru/Ni ions and giving rise to the emergent ferromagnetic phase. Moreover, the X-ray linear dichroism spectra reveal the preferential occupancy of the d3z2-r2 orbital for the Ru ions and the dx2-y2 orbital for the Ni ions in the heterostructure. This leads to different magnetic anisotropy of the superlattices when they are dominated by CRO or LNO sublayers. This work clearly demonstrates a charge-transfer-induced interfacial ferromagnetic phase in the whole ferromagnet-free oxide heterostructures, offering a feasible way to tailor oxide materials for desired functionalities.

Layered Ferromagnetic Structure Caused by the Proximity Effect and Interlayer Charge Transfer for LaNiO3/LaMnO3 Superlattices

Magnetic proximity-induced magnetism in paramagnetic LaNiO3 (LNO) has spurred intensive investigations in the past decade. However, no consensus has been reached so far regarding the magnetic order in LNO layers in relevant heterostructures. This paper reports a layered ferromagnetic structure for the (111)-oriented LNO/LaMnO3 (LMO) superlattices. It is found that each period of the superlattice consisted of an insulating LNO-interfacial phase (five unit cells in thickness, ∼1.1 nm), a metallic LNO-inner phase, a poorly conductive LMO-interfacial phase (three unit cells in thickness, ∼0.7 nm), and an insulating LMO-inner phase. All four of these phases are ferromagnetic, showing different magnetizations. The Mn-to-Ni interlayer charge transfer is responsible for the emergence of a layered magnetic structure, which may cause magnetic interaction across the LNO/LMO interface and double exchange within the LMO-interfacial layer. This work indicates that the proximity effect is an effective means of manipulating the magnetic state and associated properties of complex oxides.

Ferromagnetic insulating substrate for magnetic proximity studies: LaCoO3thin film

Ferromagnetic insulators (FMIs) are intriguing not only due to their rare nature, but also due to their potential applications in spintronics and various electronic devices. One of its key promising applications is based on an FMI-induced magnetic proximity effect, which can impose an effective time-reversal symmetry breaking on the target ultrathin layer to realize novel emergent phenomena. Here, we conduct systematic studies on thin film LaCoO3, an insulator known to be ferromagnet under tensile strain, with varying thicknesses, to establish it as an FMI platform to be integrated in heterostructures. The optimal thickness of the LaCoO3layer, providing a smooth surface and robust ferromagnetism with large remanence, is determined. A heterostructure consisting of an ultrathin target layer (2 uc SrRuO3), the LaCoO3FMI layer, and the La0.5Sr0.5CoO3conducting layer has been fabricated and the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurement on the multi-layer system demonstrates a sharp Fermi edge and a well-defined Fermi surface without the charging effect. This demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed heterostructure using LaCoO3thin film as the FMI layer, and further lays a groundwork to investigate the magnetic proximity induced phases in quantum materials.

Enhancing Interfacial Ferromagnetism and Magnetic Anisotropy of CaRuO3 /SrTiO3 Superlattices via Substrate Orientation

Artificial oxide heterostructures have provided promising platforms for the exploration of emergent quantum phases with extraordinary properties. One of the most interesting phenomena is the interfacial magnetism formed between two non-magnetic compounds. Here, a robust ferromagnetic phase emerged at the (111)-oriented heterointerface between paramagnetic CaRuO3 and diamagnetic SrTiO3 is reported. The Curie temperature is as high as ≈155 K and the saturation magnetization is as large as ≈1.3 µB per formula unit for the (111)-CaRuO3 /SrTiO3 superlattices, which are obviously superior to those of the (001)-oriented counterparts and are comparable to the typical itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO3 . A strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy with six-fold symmetry is further revealed by the anisotropic magnetoresistance measurements, presenting a large in-plane anisotropic field of 3.0-3.6 T. More importantly, the magnetic easy axis of the (111)-oriented superlattices can be effectively tuned from 〈11 2 ¯ $11\overline{2}$ 1〉 to 〈1 1 ¯ 0 $1 \bar{1}0$ 〉 directions by increasing the layer thickness of SrTiO3 . The findings demonstrate a feasible approach to enhance the interface coupling effect by varying the stacking orientation of oxide heterostructures. The tunable magnetic anisotropy also shows potential applications in low-power-consumption or exchange spring devices.

Intrinsic Magnetic Proximity Effect at the Atomically Sharp Interface of CoxFe3-xO4/Pt Grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy

Co_xFe_3-xO₄(CFO)/Pt bilayers prepared by molecular beam epitaxy were investigated for the anomalous Hall effect and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). We found that the anomalous Hall effect originates from a magnetic proximity effect at the CFO/Pt interface. The XMCD signal in the Pt L-edge was obtained only for the sample deposited at 600 °C, indicating that the magnetic proximity effect is sensitive to the interface structure. Transmission electron microscopy images of the CFO/Pt interface and XMCD measurements of Co and Fe L-edges do not provide direct evidence for interfacial atomic diffusion or alloying. In summary, these results suggest that the magnetic proximity effect is robust for transport properties, such as the anomalous Hall effect, while the induced magnetic moment depends on slight differences in the interfacial structure, such as the presence or absence of interfacial oxygen ions.

Emergent quantum phenomena in atomically engineered iridate heterostructures

Over the last few years, researches in iridates have developed into an exciting field with the discovery of numerous emergent phenomena, interesting physics, and intriguing functionalities. Among the studies, iridate-based artificial structures play a crucial role owing to their extreme flexibility and tunability in lattice symmetry, chemical composition, and crystal dimensionality. In this article, we present an overview of the recent progress regarding iridate-based artificial structures. We first explicitly introduce several essential concepts in iridates. Then, we illustrate important findings on representative SrIrO3/SrTiO3 superlattices, heterostructures comprised of SrIrO3 and magnetic oxides, and their response to external electric-field stimuli. Finally, we comment on existing problems and promising future directions in this exciting field.

Investigation of the mechanism of the anomalous Hall effects in Cr2Te3/(BiSb)2(TeSe)3 heterostructure

The interplay between ferromagnetism and the non-trivial topology has unveiled intriguing phases in the transport of charges and spins. For example, it is consistently observed the so-called topological Hall effect (THE) featuring a hump structure in the curve of the Hall resistance (R_xy) vs. a magnetic field (H) of a heterostructure consisting of a ferromagnet (FM) and a topological insulator (TI). The origin of the hump structure is still controversial between the topological Hall effect model and the multi-component anomalous Hall effect (AHE) model. In this work, we have investigated a heterostructure consisting of Bi_xSb_2-xTe_ySe_3-y (BSTS) and Cr₂Te₃ (CT), which are well-known TI and two-dimensional FM, respectively. By using the so-called "minor-loop measurement", we have found that the hump structure observed in the CT/BSTS is more likely to originate from two AHE channels. Moreover, by analyzing the scaling behavior of each amplitude of two AHE with the longitudinal resistivities of CT and BSTS, we have found that one AHE is attributed to the extrinsic contribution of CT while the other is due to the intrinsic contribution of BSTS. It implies that the proximity-induced ferromagnetic layer inside BSTS serves as a source of the intrinsic AHE, resulting in the hump structure explained by the two AHE model.

Controllable Itinerant Ferromagnetism in Weakly Correlated 5d SrIrO3

The weakly correlated nature of 5d oxide SrIrO₃ determines its rare ferromagnetism, and the control of its magnetic order is even less studied. Tailoring structure distortion is currently a main route to tune the magnetic order of 5d iridates, but only for the spatially confined insulating counterparts. Here, we have realized ferromagnetic order in metallic SrIrO₃ by construction of SrIrO₃/ferromagnetic-insulator (LaCoO₃) superlattices, which reveal a giant coercivity of ∼10 T and saturation field of ∼25 T with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The Curie temperature of SrIrO₃ can be controlled by engineering interface charge transfer, which is confirmed by Hall effect measurements collaborating with EELS and XAS. Besides, the noncoplanar spin texture is captured, which is caused by interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions as well. These results indicate controllable itinerant ferromagnetism and an emergent topological magnetic state in strong spin-orbit coupled semimetal SrIrO₃, showing great potential to develop efficient spintronic devices.

Ru-Doping-Induced Spin Frustration and Enhancement of the Room-Temperature Anomalous Hall Effect in La2/3 Sr1/3 MnO3 Films

In transition-metal-oxide heterostructures, the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a powerful tool for detecting the magnetic state and revealing intriguing interfacial magnetic orderings. However, achieving a larger AHE at room temperature in oxide heterostructures is still challenging due to the dilemma of mutually strong spin-orbit coupling and magnetic exchange interactions. Here, Ru-doping-enhanced AHE in La_2/3 Sr_1/3 Mn_1-x Ru_x O₃ epitaxial films is exploited. As the B-site Ru doping level increases up to 20%, the anomalous Hall resistivity at room temperature can be enhanced from nΩ cm to µΩ cm scale. Ru doping leads to strong competition between the ferromagnetic double-exchange interaction and the antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction. The resultant spin frustration and spin-glass state facilitate a strong skew-scattering process, thus significantly enhancing the extrinsic AHE. The findings can pave a feasible approach for boosting the controllability and reliability of oxide-based spintronic devices.

Intrinsic Ferromagnetism in 2D Fe2H with a High Curie Temperature

The rational design of ferromagnetic materials is crucial for the development of spintronic devices. Using first-principles structural search calculations, we have identified 73 two-dimensional transition metal hydrides. Some of them show interesting magnetic properties, even when combined with the characteristics of the electrides. In particular, the P3̅m1 Fe₂H monolayer is stabilized in a 1T-MoS₂-type structure with a local magnetic moment of 3 μ_B per Fe atom, whose robust ferromagnetism is attributed to the exchange interaction between neighboring Fe atoms within and between sublayers, leading to a remarkably high Curie temperature of 340 K. On the other hand, it has a large magnetic anisotropic energy and spin-polarization ratio. Interestingly, the above room-temperature ferromagnetism of the Fe₂H monolayer is well preserved within a biaxial strain of 5%. The structure and electron property of surface-functionalized Fe₂H are also explored. All of these interesting properties make the Fe₂H monolayer an attractive candidate for spintronic nanodevices.
