Structure and Evolution of Quasi-Solid-State Hybrid Electrolytes Formed Inside Electrochemical Cells

Aluminum-Lithium Alloy Fillers Enhancing the Room Temperature Performances of Polymer Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) electrolytes usually suffer from low room temperature (RT) ionic conductivity and a narrow voltage window, which limits the improvement of energy density and practical applications in all-solid-state batteries. Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) are regarded as the common method to reduce the crystallinity of polymers and increase the lithium ion conductivity. Compared with active or inert ceramic material fillers in previous studies, aluminum-lithium alloy fillers are used to prepare composite electrolytes in this study, showing excellent performance at room temperature. The conductivity of the PEO-based electrolytes increases by a factor of 3.62-3.62× 10-4 S cm-1 at RT with 5 wt % Al-Li alloy. The transference number of Li+ is increased to 0.524. The characteristics of the Al-Li alloy and higher conductivity enable the composite electrolyte to stabilize the interface with the electrodes, reducing the polarization of solid-state batteries. The all-solid-state Li/PEO-5%/LiFePO4 cells show the highest initial discharge capacity of 153 mAh g-1 and the highest stable discharge capacity of 147 mAh g-1 with the initial Coulombic efficiency of more than 100%. It also exhibits the best rate capacity and cycle performance (90% capacity retention rate after 100 cycles).

Solid-state polymer-particle hybrid electrolytes: Structure and electrochemical properties

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are challenged by complex interfacial chemistry and poor ion transport through the interfaces they form with battery electrodes. Here, we investigate a class of SSE composed of micrometer-sized lithium oxide (Li2O) particles dispersed in a polymerizable 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) liquid. Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the DOL by Lewis acid salts inside a battery cell produces polymer-inorganic hybrid electrolytes with gradient properties on both the particle and battery cell length scales. These electrolytes sustain stable charge-discharge behavior in Li||NCM811 and anode-free Cu||NCM811 electrochemical cells. On the particle length scale, Li2O retards ROP, facilitating efficient ion transport in a fluid-like region near the particle surface. On battery cell length scales, gravity-assisted settling creates physical and electrochemical gradients in the hybrid electrolytes. By means of electrochemical and spectroscopic analyses, we find that Li2O particles participate in a reversible redox reaction that increases the effective CE in anode-free cells to values approaching 100%, enhancing battery cycle life.

In Situ Polymerization Bi-Functional Gel Polymer Electrolyte for High Performance Quasi-Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are expected to be the next-generation energy storage system due to the ultrahigh theoretical energy density and low cost. However, the notorious shuttle effect of higher-order polysulfides and the uncontrollable lithium dendrite growth are the two biggest challenges for commercially viable Li-S batteries. Herein, these two main challenges are solved by in situ polymerization of bi-functional gel polymer electrolyte (GPE). The initiator (SiCl4) not only drives the polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) but also induces the construction of a hybrid solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with inorganic-rich compositions on the Li anode. In addition, diatomaceous earth (DE) is added and anchored in the GPE to obtain PDOL-SiCl4-DE electrolyte through in situ polymerization. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the hybrid SEI provides abundant adsorption sites for the deposition of Li+, inhibiting the growth of lithium dendrites. Meanwhile, the shuttle effect is greatly alleviated due to the strong adsorption capacity of DE toward lithium polysulfides. Therefore, the Li/Li symmetric cell and Li-S full cell assembled with PDOL-SiCl4-DE exhibit excellent cycling stability. This study offers a valuable reference for the development of high performance and safe Li-S batteries.

A locally solvent-tethered polymer electrolyte for long-life lithium metal batteries

Solid polymer electrolytes exhibit enhanced Li+ conductivity when plasticized with highly dielectric solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). However, the application of DMF-containing electrolytes in solid-state batteries is hindered by poor cycle life caused by continuous DMF degradation at the anode surface and the resulting unstable solid-electrolyte interphase. Here we report a composite polymer electrolyte with a rationally designed Hofmann-DMF coordination complex to address this issue. DMF is engineered on Hofmann frameworks as tethered ligands to construct a locally DMF-rich interface which promotes Li+ conduction through a ligand-assisted transport mechanism. A high ionic conductivity of 6.5 × 10-4 S cm-1 is achieved at room temperature. We demonstrate that the composite electrolyte effectively reduces the free shuttling and subsequent decomposition of DMF. The locally solvent-tethered electrolyte cycles stably for over 6000 h at 0.1 mA cm-2 in Li | |Li symmetric cell. When paired with sulfurized polyacrylonitrile cathodes, the full cell exhibits a prolonged cycle life of 1000 cycles at 1 C. This work will facilitate the development of practical polymer-based electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and long cycle life.

Ultrathin, Mechanically Robust Quasi-Solid Composite Electrolyte for Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Herein, we present the preparation and properties of an ultrathin, mechanically robust, quasi-solid composite electrolyte (SEO-QSCE) for solid-state lithium metal battery (SLB) from a well-defined polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer (SEO), Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 nanofiller, and fluoroethylene carbonate plasticizer. Compared with the ordered lamellar microphase separation of SEO, the SEO-QSCE displays bicontinuous phases, consisting of a Li+ ion conductive poly(ethylene oxide) domain and a mechanically robust framework of the polystyrene domain. Therefore, the 12 μm-thick SEO-QSCE membrane exhibits an exceptional ionic conductivity of 1.3 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 30 °C, along with a remarkable tensile strength of 5.1 MPa and an elastic modulus of 2.7 GPa. The high mechanical robustness and the self-generated LiF-rich SEI enable the SEO-QSCE to have an extraordinary lithium dendrite prohibition effect. The SLB of Li|SEO-QSCE|LiFePO4 reveals superior cycling performances at 30 °C for over 600 cycles, maintaining an initial discharge capacity of 145 mAh g-1 and a remarkable capacity retention of 81% (117 mAh g-1) after 400 cycles at 0.5 C. The high-voltage SLB of Li|SEO-QSCE|LiNi0.5Co0.3Mn0.2O2 displays good cycling stability for over 150 cycles at 30 °C. Moreover, the exceptional robustness of SEO-QSCE enables the high-voltage solid-state pouch cell of Li|SEO-QSCE|LiNi0.5Co0.3Mn0.2O2 with high flexibility and excellent safety features. The current investigation delivers a promising and innovative approach for preparing quasi-solid electrolytes with features of ultrathin design, mechanical robustness, and exceptional electrochemical performance for high-voltage SLBs.

Build a High-Performance All-Solid-State Lithium Battery through Introducing Competitive Coordination Induction Effect in Polymer-Based Electrolyte

Polymer-inorganic composite electrolytes (PICE) have attracted tremendous attention in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) due to facile processability. However, the poor Li+ conductivity at room temperature (RT) and interfacial instability severely hamper the practical application. Herein, we propose a concept of competitive coordination induction effects (CCIE) and reveal the essential correlation between the local coordination structure and the interfacial chemistry in PEO-based PICE. CCIE introduction greatly enhances the ionic conductivity and electrochemical performances of ASSLBs at 30 °C. Owing to the competitive coordination (Cs+…TFSI-…Li+, Cs+…C-O-C…Li+ and 2,4,6-TFA…Li…TFSI-) from the competitive cation (Cs+ from CsPF6) and molecule (2,4,6-TFA: 2,4,6-trifluoroaniline), a multimodal weak coordination environment of Li+ is constructed enabling a high efficient Li+ migration at 30 °C (Li+ conductivity: 6.25×10-4 S cm-1; tLi +=0.61). Since Cs+ tends to be enriched at the interface, TFSI- and PF6 - in situ form LiF-Li3N-Li2O-Li2S enriched solid electrolyte interface with electrostatic shielding effects. The assembled ASSLBs without adding interfacial wetting agent exhibit outstanding rate capability (LiFePO4: 147.44 mAh g-1@1 C and 107.41mAhg-1@2 C) and cycling stability at 30 °C (LiFePO4:94.65 %@200cycles@0.5 C; LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2: 94.31 %@200 cycles@0.3 C). This work proposes a concept of CCIE and reveals its mechanism in designing PICE with high ionic conductivity as well as high interfacial compatibility at near RT for high-performance ASSLBs.

A New Method for In-Situ Characterization of Solid-State Batteries Based on Optical Coherence Tomography

With the in-depth study of solid-state batteries (SSBs), various in situ and ex situ characterization technologies have been widely used to study them. The performance and reliability of SSBs are limited by the formation and evolution of lithium dendrites at the interfaces between solid electrodes and solid electrolytes. We propose a new method based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) for in situ characterization of the internal state of solid-state batteries. OCT is a low-loss, high-resolution, non-invasive imaging technique that can provide real-time monitoring of cross-sectional images of internal structures of SSBs. The morphology, growth, and evolution of lithium dendrites at different stages of cycling under various conditions can be visualized and quantified by OCT. Furthermore, we validate and correlate the OCT results with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and XPS, proving the accuracy and effectiveness of the OCT characterization method. We reveal the interfacial phenomena and challenges in SSBs and demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of OCT as a powerful tool for in situ and operando imaging of battery interfaces. This study provides new insights into the mechanisms and factors that affect SSB performance, safety, and lifetime, and suggests possible solutions for improvement and application in the field of applied energy.

PDOL-Based Solid Electrolyte Toward Practical Application: Opportunities and Challenges

Polymer solid-state lithium batteries (SSLB) are regarded as a promising energy storage technology to meet growing demand due to their high energy density and safety. Ion conductivity, interface stability and battery assembly process are still the main challenges to hurdle the commercialization of SSLB. As the main component of SSLB, poly(1,3-dioxolane) (PDOL)-based solid polymer electrolytes polymerized in-situ are becoming a promising candidate solid electrolyte, for their high ion conductivity at room temperature, good battery electrochemical performances, and simple assembly process. This review analyzes opportunities and challenges of PDOL electrolytes toward practical application for polymer SSLB. The focuses include exploring the polymerization mechanism of DOL, the performance of PDOL composite electrolytes, and the application of PDOL. Furthermore, we provide a perspective on future research directions that need to be emphasized for commercialization of PDOL-based electrolytes in SSLB. The exploration of these schemes facilitates a comprehensive and profound understanding of PDOL-based polymer electrolyte and provides new research ideas to boost them toward practical application in solid-state batteries.

Self-Assembly of Ultrathin, Ultrastrong Layered Membranes by Protic Solvent Penetration

Flexible membranes with ultrathin thickness and excellent mechanical properties have shown great potential for broad uses in solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs), on-skin electronics, etc. However, an ultrathin membrane (<5 μm) is rarely reported in the above applications due to the inherent trade-off between thickness and antifailure ability. We discover a protic solvent penetration strategy to prepare ultrathin, ultrastrong layered films through a continuous interweaving of aramid nanofibers (ANFs) with the assistance of simultaneous protonation and penetration of a protic solvent. The thickness of a pure ANF film can be controlled below 5 μm, with a tensile strength of 556.6 MPa, allowing us to produce the thinnest SPE (3.4 μm). The resultant SPEs enable Li-S batteries to cycle over a thousand times at a high rate of 1C due to the small ionic impedance conferred by the ultrathin characteristic and regulated ionic transportation. Besides, a high loading of the sulfur cathode (4 mg cm-2) with good sulfur utilization was achieved at a mild temperature (35 °C), which is difficult to realize in previously reported solid-state Li-S batteries. Through a simple laminating process at the wet state, the thicker film (tens of micrometers) obtained exhibits mechanical properties comparable to those of thin films and possesses the capability to withstand high-velocity projectile impacts, indicating that our technique features a high degree of thickness controllability. We believe that it can serve as a valuable tool to assemble nanomaterials into ultrathin, ultrastrong membranes for various applications.

Rational Design of a Cross-Linked Composite Solid Electrolyte for Li-Metal Batteries

The interfacial problem caused by solid-solid contact is an important issue faced by a solid-state electrolyte (SSE). Herein, a cross-linked composite solid electrolyte (CSE) poly(vinylene carbonate) (PVCA)─ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (ETPTA)─Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) (PEL) is prepared by in situ thermal polymerization. The ionic conductivity and Li+ transference number (tLi+) of PEL increase significantly due to the addition of LAGP, which can reach 1.011 × 10-4 S cm-1 and 0.451 respectively. The electrochemical stable window is also widened to 4.68 V. Benefiting from the integrated interfacial structure, the assembled coin cell shows low interfacial resistance. The all-solid-state NCM622|PEL|Li coin cell exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 169.7 mA h g-1 and 70% capacity retention over 100 cycles at 0.2 C, demonstrating excellent cycling stability.

Composite Quasi-Solid-State Electrolytes with Organic-Inorganic Interface Engineering for Fast Ion Transport in Dendrite-Free Sodium Metal Batteries

Quasi-solid-state electrolytes (QSSE) are a promising candidate for addressing the limitations of liquid and solid electrolytes. However, different ion transport capacities between liquid solvents and polymers can cause localized heterogeneous distribution of Na+ fluxes. In addition, the continuous side reactions occurring at the interface between QSSE and sodium anode lead to uncontrollable dendrites growth. Herein, a novel strategy is designed to integrate the composite electrospun membrane of Na3 Zr2 Si2 PO12 and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) into QSSE, aiming to introduce new fast ion conducting channels at the organic-inorganic interface. The efficient ion transfer pathways can effectively promote the homogenization of ion migration, enabling composite QSSE to achieve an ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 4.1 mS cm-1 at room temperature, with a Na+ transference number as high as 0.54. Moreover, the PVDF-HFP is preferentially reduced upon contact with the sodium anode to form a "NaF-rich" solid electrolyte interphase, which effectively suppresses the growth of dendrites. The synergistic combination of multiple strategies can realize exceptional long-term cycling stability in both sodium symmetric batteries (≈700 h) and full batteries (2100 cycles). This study provides a new insight for constructing high performance and dendrite-free solid-state sodium metal batteries.

Crowding Effect-Induced Zinc-Enriched/Water-Lean Polymer Interfacial Layer Toward Practical Zn-Iodine Batteries

Although the meticulous design of functional diversity within the polymer interfacial layer holds paramount significance in mitigating the challenges associated with hydrogen evolution reactions and dendrite growth in zinc anodes, this pursuit remains a formidable task. Here, a large-scale producible zinc-enriched/water-lean polymer interfacial layer, derived from carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS), is constructed on zinc anodes by integration of electrodeposition and a targeted complexation strategy for highly reversible Zn plating/stripping chemistry. Zinc ions-induced crowding effect between CCS skeleton creates a strong hydrogen bonding environment and squeezes the moving space for water/anion counterparts, therefore greatly reducing the number of active water molecules and alleviating cathodic I3- attack. Moreover, the as-constructed Zn2+-enriched layer substantially facilitate rapid Zn2+ migration through the NH2-Zn2+-NH2 binding/dissociation mode of CCS molecule chain. Consequently, the large-format Zn symmetry cell (9 cm2) with a Zn-CCS electrode demonstrates excellent cycling stability over 1100 h without bulging. When coupled with an I2 cathode, the assembled Zn-I2 multilayer pouch cell displays an exceptionally high capacity of 140 mAh and superior long-term cycle performance of 400 cycles. This work provides a universal strategy to prepare large-scale production and high-performance polymer crowding layer for metal anode-based battery, analogous outcomes were veritably observed on other metals (Al, Cu, Sn).

Hybrid Crosslinked Solid Polymer Electrolyte via In-Situ Solidification Enables High-Performance Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Solid-state lithium-metal batteries constructed by in-situ solidification of cyclic ether are considered to be a critical strategy for the next generation of solid-state batteries with high energy density and safety. However, the poor thermal/electrochemical stability of linear polyethers and severe interfacial reactions limit its further development. Herein, in-situ ring-opening hybrid crosslinked polymerization is proposed for organic/inorganic hybrid polymer electrolyte (HCPE) with superior ionic conductivity of 2.22 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 30 °C, ultrahigh Li+ transference number of 0.88, and wide electrochemical stability window of 5.2 V. These allow highly stable lithium stripping/plating cycling for over 1000 h at 1 mA cm-2 , which also reveal a well-defined interfacial stabilization mechanism. Thus, HCPE endows assembled solid-state lithium-metal batteries with excellent long-cycle performance over 600 cycles at 2 C (25 °C) and superior capacity retention of 92.1%. More importantly, the proposed noncombustible HCPE opens up a new frontier to promote the practical application of high safety and high energy density solid-state batteries via in-situ solidification.

Optimizing Li-ion Solvation in Gel Polymer Electrolytes to Stabilize Li-Metal Anode

Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) have potential as substitutes for liquid electrolytes in lithium-metal batteries (LMBs). Their semi-solid state also makes GPEs suitable for various applications, including wearables and flexible electronics. Here, we report the initiation of ring-opening polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) by Lewis acid and the introduction of diluent 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) to regulate electrolyte structure for a more stable interface. This diluent-blended GPE exhibits enhanced electrochemical stability and ion transport properties compared to a blank version without it. FTIR and NMR proved the effectiveness of monomer polymerization and further determined the molecular weight distribution of polymerization by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Experimental and simulation results show that the addition of TTE enhances ion association and tends to distribute on the anode surface to construct a robust and low-impedance SEI. Thus, the polymer battery achieves 5 C charge-discharge at room temperature and 200 cycles at low temperature -20 °C. The study presents an effective approach for regulating solvation structures in GPEs, promoting advancements in the future design of GPE-based LMBs.

High-Performance Solid Lithium Metal Batteries Enabled by LiF/LiCl/LiIn Hybrid SEI via InCl3 -Driven In Situ Polymerization of 1,3-Dioxolane

The use of poly(1,3-dioxolane) (PDOL) electrolyte for lithium batteries has gained attention due to its high ionic conductivity, low cost, and potential for large-scale applications. However, its compatibility with Li metal needs improvement to build a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) toward metallic Li anode for practical lithium batteries. To address this concern, this study utilized a simple InCl3 -driven strategy for polymerizing DOL and building a stable LiF/LiCl/LiIn hybrid SEI, confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM). Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and finite element simulation (FES) verify that the hybrid SEI exhibits not only excellent electron insulating properties but also fast transport properties of Li+ . Moreover, the interfacial electric field shows an even potential distribution and larger Li+ flux, resulting in uniform dendrite-free Li deposition. The use of the LiF/LiCl/LiIn hybrid SEI in Li/Li symmetric batteries shows steady cycling for 2000 h, without experiencing a short circuit. The hybrid SEI also provided excellent rate performance and outstanding cycling stability in LiFePO4 /Li batteries, with a high specific capacity of 123.5 mAh g-1 at 10 C rate. This study contributes to the design of high-performance solid lithium metal batteries utilizing PDOL electrolytes.
