Recent Advances of Bio-Based Hydrogel Derived Interfacial Evaporator for Sustainable Water and Collaborative Energy Storage Applications

Solar interfacial evaporation strategy (SIES) has shown great potential to deal with water scarcity and energy crisis. Biobased hydrogel derived interfacial evaporator can realize efficient evaporation due to the unique structure- properties relationship. As such, increasing studies have focused on water treatment or even potential accompanying advanced energy storage applications with respect of efficiency and mechanism of bio-based hydrogel derived interfacial evaporation from microscale to molecular scale. In this review, the interrelationship between efficient interfacial evaporator and bio-based hydrogel is first presented. Then, special attention is paid on the inherent molecular characteristics of the biopolymer related to the up-to-date studies of promising biopolymers derived interfacial evaporator with the objective to showcase the unique superiority of biopolymer. In addition, the applications of the bio-based hydrogels are highlighted concerning the aspects including water desalination, water decontamination atmospheric water harvesting, energy storage and conversion. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are given to unveil the bottleneck of the biobased hydrogel derived SIES in sustainable water and other energy storage applications.

Chemistries and materials for atmospheric water harvesting

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is recognized as a crucial strategy to address the global challenge of water scarcity by tapping into the vast reserves of atmospheric moisture for potable water supply. Within this domain, sorbents lie in the core of AWH technologies as they possess broad adaptability across a wide spectrum of humidity levels, underpinned by the cyclic sorption and desorption processes of sorbents, necessitating a multi-scale viewpoint regarding the rational material and chemical selection and design. This Invited Review delves into the essential sorption mechanisms observed across various classes of sorbent systems, emphasizing the water-sorbent interactions and the progression of water networks. A special focus is placed on the insights derived from isotherm profiles, which elucidate sorbent structures and sorption dynamics. From these foundational principles, we derive material and chemical design guidelines and identify key tuning factors from a structural-functional perspective across multiple material systems, addressing their fundamental chemistries and unique attributes. The review further navigates through system-level design considerations to optimize water production efficiency. This review aims to equip researchers in the field of AWH with a thorough understanding of the water-sorbent interactions, material design principles, and system-level considerations essential for advancing this technology.

In situ Electrical Impedance Tomography for Visualizing Water Transportation in Hygroscopic Aerogels

The global water crisis demands immediate attention, and atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) provides a viable alternative. However, studying the real-time subtle relationship between water absorption, diffusion, and internal structure for hygroscopic materials is challenging. Herein, a dynamic visualization technique is proposed that utilizes an in situ electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system and a precise reconstruction algorithm to achieve real-time monitoring of the water sorption process within aerogels from an internal microstructural perspective. These results can be inferred that composites' pore sizes affecting the kinetics of their moisture absorption. In addition, the diffusion path of moisture absorption and the distribution of stored moisture inside aerogels exhibit intrinsic self-selective behavior, where the fiber skeleton of the aerogel plays a crucial role. In summary, this work proposes a generic EIT-based technique for the in situ and dynamic monitoring of the hygroscopic process, pointing to an entirely new approach regarding research on AWH materials.

Solar-Driven Drum-Type Atmospheric Water Harvester Based on Bio-Based Gels with Fast Adsorption/Desorption Kinetics

Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting is an attractive technology for exploiting unconventional water sources. A critical challenge is how to facilitate fast and continuous collection of potable water from air. Here, a bio-based gel (cellulose/alginate/lignin gel, CAL gel), resulting from the integration of a whole biomass-derived polymer network with lithium chloride is reported. A fast adsorption/desorption kinetics, with a water capture rate of 1.74 kg kg-1 h-1 at 30% relative humidity and a desorption rate of 1.98 kg kg-1 h-1, is simultaneously realized in one piece of CAL gel, because of its strong hygroscopicity, hydrophilic network, abundant water transport channels, photothermal conversion ability, and ≈200-µm-thick self-supporting bulky structure caused by multicomponent synergy. A solar-driven, drum-type, tunable, and portable harvester is designed that can harvest atmospheric water within a brief time. Under outdoor conditions, the harvester with CAL gels operates 36 switches (180°) per day realizes a water yield of 8.96 kg kggel -1 (18.87 g kgdevice -1). This portable harvester highlights the potential for fast and scalable atmospheric water harvesting in extreme environments.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) films based on gelatin as active packaging for moisture regulation in fruit preservation

To develop a novel active packaging for fruit preservation, two different deep eutectic solvents (DESs) comprising choline chloride, betaine and glycerol [ChCl:Gly (1:2) and Be:Gly (1:2)] were prepared and the corresponding DESs-based films (DES@Gel) using gelatin as polymer matrix were fabricated. DES@Gel showed smoother morphologies and better optical and mechanical properties as compared with Gel. Moisture sorption isotherm curves, the enhancement of water vapour permeability (WVP) and the excellent moisture absorption-desorption cyclist performance illustrated the moisture regulation hypothesis mechanism of DES@Gel. Furthermore, cherry tomato preservation experiment was carried out and the groups treated with DES@Gel showed better performances. The moisture regulation property of DES@Gel could broaden new avenues for active packaging.

Biopolymers for Hygroscopic Material Development

The effective management of atmospheric water will create huge value for mankind. Diversified and sustainable biopolymers that are derived from organisms provide rich building blocks for various hygroscopic materials. Here, a comprehensive review of recent advances in developing biopolymers for hygroscopic materials is provided. It is begun with a brief introduction of species diversity and the processes of obtaining various biopolymer materials from organisms. The fabrication of hygroscopic materials is then illustrated, with a specific focus on the use of biopolymer-derived materials as substrates to produce composites and the use of biopolymers as building blocks to fabricate composite gels. Next, the representative applications of biopolymer-derived hygroscopic materials for dehumidification, atmospheric water harvesting, and power generation are systematically presented. An outlook on future challenges and key issues worthy of attention are finally provided.

Title High Solar-Thermal Conversion Aerogel for Efficient Atmospheric Water Harvesting

The shortage of freshwater is a global problem, however, the gel that can be used for atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) in recent years studying, suffer from salt leakage, agglomeration, and slow water evaporation efficiency. Herein, a solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) aerogel is prepared by UV polymerization and freeze-drying technique, using poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm), hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), ethanolamine-decorate LiCl (E-LiCl) and polyaniline (PANI) as raw materials. The PNIPAm and HPC formed aerogel networks makes the E-LiCl stably and efficiently loaded, improving the water adsorption-desorption kinetics, and PANI achieves rapid water vapor evaporation. The aerogel has low density ≈0.12-0.15 g cm-3, but can sustain a weight of 1000 times of its own weight. The synergist of elements and structure gives the aerogel has 0.46-2.95 g g-1 water uptake capability at 30-90% relative humidity, and evaporation rate reaches 1.98 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun illumination. In outdoor experiments, 88% of the water is harvesting under natural light irradiation, and an average water harvesting rate of 0.80 gwater gsorbent -1 day-1. Therefore, the aerogel can be used in arid and semi-arid areas to collect water for plants and animals.

Biomimetic Dual Absorption-Adsorption Networked MXene Aerogel-Pump for Integrated Water Harvesting and Power Generation System

Harvesting atmospheric water and converting it into electricity play vital roles in advancing next-generation energy conversion systems. However, the current water harvester systems suffer from a weak water capture ability and poor recyclability due to high diffusion barriers and low sorption kinetics, which significantly limit their practical application. Herein, we drew inspiration from the natural "Pump effect" observed in wood and successfully developed a dual "absorption-adsorption" networked MXene aerogel atmospheric water harvester (MAWH) through ice templating and confining LiCl processes, thereby serving multiple purposes of clean water production, passive dehumidification, and power generation. The MAWH benefits from the dual H-bond network of MXene and cellulose nanocrystals (absorption network) and the hygroscopic properties of lithium chloride (adsorption network). Furthermore, its aligned wood-like channel structure efficiently eliminates water nucleation near the 3D network, resulting in fast moisture absorption. The developed MAWH demonstrates a high moisture absorption ability of 3.12 g g-1 at 90% relative humidity (RH), featuring rapid vapor transport rates and durable cyclic performance. When compared with commercial desiccants such as the 4A molecular sieve and silica gel, the MAWH can reduce the RH from 80% to 20% within just 6 h. Most notably, our integrated MAWH-based water harvesting-power generation system achieves a high voltage of ∼0.12 V at 77% RH, showcasing its potential for practical application. These developed MAWHs are considered as high-performance atmospheric water harvesters in the water collection and power generation field.

3D Printed Cellulose Nanofiber Aerogel Scaffold with Hierarchical Porous Structures for Fast Solar-Driven Atmospheric Water Harvesting

Hygroscopic salt-based composite sorbents are considered ideal candidates for solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting. The primary challenge for the sorbents lies in exposing more hygroscopically active sites to the surrounding air while preventing salt leakage. Herein, a hierarchically structured scaffold is constructed by integrating cellulose nanofiber and lithium chloride (LiCl) as building blocks through 3D printing combined with freeze-drying. The milli/micrometer multiscale pores can effectively confine LiCl and simultaneously provide a more exposed active area for water sorption and release, accelerating both water sorption and evaporation kinetics of the 3D printed structure. Compared to a conventional freeze-dried aerogel, the 3D printed scaffold exhibits a water sorption rate that is increased 1.6-fold, along with a more than 2.4-fold greater water release rate. An array of bilayer scaffolds is demonstrated, which can produce 0.63 g g-1 day-1 of water outdoors under natural sunlight. This article provides a sustainable strategy for collecting freshwater from the atmosphere.

Simultaneous Passive Cooling and Humidity Control via the Fiber-Encapsulated Gel Structure

Radiative cooling is a promising technology that offers benefits such as reducing cooling energy demand, mitigating climate change impacts, and contributing to sustainable development. However, previous radiative cooling technologies are unable to manage humidity, which is crucial and energy-intensive in many applications. Therefore, it is necessary to extend the capabilities of radiative coolers to include humidity control. Here, we demonstrate a fiber-encapsulated gel structure (FEGS) to realize simultaneous radiative cooling and humidity control. By employing a phase equilibrium-based strategy, the FEGS can control relative humidity to any value between 30 and 80%. The changes in temperature, thermal conductivity, and water content during the regeneration process of FEGS were studied. Field tests demonstrated that the FEGS can achieve 5 °C subambient temperature reduction under direct sunlight while maintaining the relative humidity at a controlled level of 58 ± 3% for a continuous period of 3 days. This work can potentially pave the way for the comanagement of temperature and humidity in a passive, low-cost, and scalable way.

Facile and efficient chitosan-based hygroscopic aerogel for air dehumidification

Sorption dehumidification, as an energy-saving and eco-friendly approach, has been emerging in application for air dehumidification. Here, a prospective method is proposed to prepare biomass-based hygroscopic aerogels that are easily applicable, sustainable, high-efficient, and recyclable. The chitosan-based aerogel with a porous and hydrophilic network acts as the carrier and water reservoir for the uniformly distributed lithium chloride hygroscopic salt, and provides the hygroscopic salt with more liberal water channels to facilitate moisture capture and transfer. As a consequence, the prepared chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol@lithium chloride (chitosan/PVA@LiCl) hygroscopic aerogel exhibits an excellent moisture absorption capacity of up to 2.77 g g-1 at a relative humidity of 90 %. Meanwhile, as the chitosan/PVA@LiCl aerogel is set in a closed space about 2200 times larger than its own volume, the relative humidity can be reduced from 90 % to 32 % within 2 h, and further lower to 25 % after 4 h. Furthermore, combined with multi-walled carbon nanotubes, the photothermal hygroscopic aerogel is obtained that can rapidly desorb water under sunlight, thus to realize energy-free cycle. Overall, the renewable biomass-based aerogel materials with the advantages of simple preparation and excellent hygroscopic performance provides a new path for the development of sorption dehumidification technology.

Sorption-Based Atmospheric Water Harvesting: Materials, Components, Systems, and Applications

Freshwater scarcity is a global challenge posing threats to the lives and daily activities of humankind such that two-thirds of the global population currently experience water shortages. Atmospheric water, irrespective of geographical location, is considered as an alternative water source. Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) has recently emerged as an efficient strategy for decentralized water production. SAWH thus opens up a self-sustaining source of freshwater that can potentially support the global population for various applications. In this review, the state-of-the-art of SAWH, considering its operation principle, thermodynamic analysis, energy assessment, materials, components, different designs, productivity improvement, scale-up, and application for drinking water, is first extensively explored. Thereafter, the practical integration and potential application of SAWH, beyond drinking water, for wide range of utilities in agriculture, fuel/electricity production, thermal management in building services, electronic devices, and textile are comprehensively discussed. The various strategies to reduce human reliance on natural water resources by integrating SAWH into existing technologies, particularly in underdeveloped countries, in order to satisfy the interconnected needs for food, energy, and water are also examined. This study further highlights the urgent need and future research directions to intensify the design and development of hybrid-SAWH systems for sustainability and diverse applications.

All-Day Multicyclic Atmospheric Water Harvesting Enabled by Polyelectrolyte Hydrogel with Hybrid Desorption Mode

Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is a promising approach for mitigating worldwide water scarcity. However, reliable water supply driven by sustainable energy regardless of diurnal variation and weather remains a long-standing challenge. To address this issue, a polyelectrolyte hydrogel sorbent with an optimal hybrid-desorption multicyclic-operation strategy is proposed, achieving all-day AWH and a significant increase in daily water production. The polyelectrolyte hydrogel possesses a large interior osmotic pressure of 659 atm, which refreshes sorption sites by continuously migrating the sorbed water within its interior, and thus enhancing sorption kinetics. The charged polymeric chains coordinate with hygroscopic salt ions, anchoring the salts and preventing agglomeration and leakage, thereby enhancing cyclic stability. The hybrid desorption mode, which couples solar energy and simulated waste heat, introduces a uniform and adjustable sorbent temperature for achieving all-day ultrafast water release. With rapid sorption-desorption kinetics, an optimization model suggests that eight moisture capture-release cycles are capable of achieving high water yield of 2410 mLwater kgsorbent -1 day-1 , up to 3.5 times that of single-cyclic non-hybrid modes. The polyelectrolyte hydrogel sorbent and the coupling with sustainable energy driven desorption mode pave the way for the next-generation AWH systems, significantly bringing freshwater on a multi-kilogram scale closer.

Hygrothermic Wood Actuated Robotic Hand

Stimulus-responsive actuators play a vital role in the new generation of intelligent systems. However, poor mechanical performance, complicated fabrication processes, and the inability to complex deformation limit their practical applications. Herein, these challenges are overcome via designing a strong hygrothermic wood actuator with asymmetric water affinity. The actuator is readily constructed by sandwiching polypyrrole-coated wood with a Ni complex hygroscopic gel top layer for moisture absorption and a polyimide bottom layer as the water barrier. The resulting hygrothermic wood spontaneously stretches and bends itself in response to moisture and thermal/light stimulation. A robotic hand and a series of grippers made of hygrothermic wood demonstrate dexterous object-hand interactions during grasping and holding, while the reversible hygrothermic property allows the actuator to be potentially applied in fire rescue scenarios to rescue trapped objects. A combination of good mechanical properties, multi-stimulus-response, complex deformation, wide working temperature range, low manufacturing cost, and biocompatibility are simultaneously realized by one device. It is thus believed that such a strong wood actuator will open up a new avenue for building intelligent robotic hand systems.

Production and Characterization of Calcium Silica Aerogel Powder as a Food Additive

In this study, mesoporous calcium silica aerogels were produced for use as an anticaking food additive in powdered foods. A low-cost precursor (sodium silicate) was used, and calcium silica aerogels with superior properties were obtained with different pH values (pH 7.0 and pH 9.0) by modeling and optimizing the production process. The Si/Ca molar ratio, reaction time, and aging temperature were determined as independent variables, and their effects and interactions to maximize the surface area and water vapor adsorption capacity (WVAC) were evaluated by response surface methodology and analysis of variance. Responses were fitted with a quadratic regression model to find optimal production conditions. Model results showed that the maximum surface area and WVAC of the calcium silica aerogel that was produced with pH 7.0 were achieved at a Si/Ca molar ratio of 2.42, a reaction time of 5 min, and an aging temperature of 25 °C. The surface area and WVAC of calcium silica aerogel powder produced with these parameters were found to be 198 m²/g and 17.56%, respectively. According to the results of surface area and elemental analysis, calcium silica aerogel powder produced at pH 7.0 (CSA7) had the best results compared to that produced at pH 9.0 (CSA9). Therefore, detailed characterization methods were examined for this aerogel. The morphological review of the particles was performed with scanning electron microscopy. Elemental analysis was performed via inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. True density was measured in a helium pycnometer, and tapped density was calculated by the tapped method. Porosity was calculated using an equation using these two density values. The rock salt was powdered with a grinder and used as a model food for this study, and CSA7 was added at a rate of 1% by weight. The results showed that adding CSA7 powder to the rock salt powder at a rate of 1% (w/w) improved the flow behavior from the cohesive region to the easy-flow region. Consequently, calcium silica aerogel powder with a high surface area and high WVAC might be considered as an anticaking agent to use in powdered foods.

Hygroscopic and Photothermal All-Polymer Foams for Efficient Atmospheric Water Harvesting, Passive Humidity Management, and Protective Packaging

Environmental humidity and thermal control are of primary importance for fighting global warming, growing energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting is an emerging technology with great potential in clean water production and passive cooling applications. However, sorption-based humidity management and their hybrid applications are limited due to the lack of energywise designs of hygroscopic materials and devices. Herein, all polymeric 3D foams are developed and evaluated as hygroscopic and photothermal materials. The gas-foaming method generates closed-cell structures with interconnected hydrophilic networks and wrinkled surfaces, expanding hygroscopic, photothermal, and evaporating areas of the 3D foams. These unique advantages lead to efficient water vapor sorption in a wide broad relative humidity (RH) range of 50-90% and efficient water release in a wide solar intensity (0.4-1 sun) and temperature range (27-80 °C). The reversible moisture sorption/release in 50 adsorption/desorption cycles highlights the excellent durability of the 3D foams compared to conventional inorganic desiccants. The 3D foams disclose passive and efficient apparent temperature regulation in warm and humid environments. Moreover, the use of the 3D foams as loose fill for fruit preservation and packaging is demonstrated for the first time by taking the merit of the 3D foams' moisture-absorbing, quick-drying, cushioning, and thermal-insulating properties. This work presents an integrated design of polymeric desiccants and scaffolds, not merely delivering stable water adsorption/desorption but also discovering innovative hybrid applications in humidity management and protective packaging.

Eco-Friendly Silica Microcapsules with Improved Fragrance Retention

Microcapsules are employed extensively in various applications; however, most are composed of synthetic plastics. Thus, substitution of their component materials is essential to prevent environmental problems associated with primary microplastics. Herein, we report the synthesis of eco-friendly silica core–shell microcapsules for fragrance retention. The silica shell was prepared via oil/water emulsion template synthesis using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), which was added to the immature silica microcapsules prior to complete formation of primary silica shells to promote seeded growth for further reaction of silica. The thickness of the silica shell increased from 42.29 to 70.03 nm, while the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area and internal pore area decreased from 155.16 and 30.08 m2/g to 92.28 and 5.36 m2/g, respectively. The silica microcapsules with lower surface areas retained fragrance for more than 80 days, even in a harsh environment of 15% sodium dodecyl sulfate at 60 °C, whereas the fragrance compound in those without additional TEOS treatment was completely released within seven days. Practical qualitative evaluation of fragrance was also performed for application in fragrance delivery because of the enhanced long-term fragrance retention ability. Our findings show the widespread potential of microcapsules synthesized from eco-friendly materials in industrial applications.

Scalable super hygroscopic polymer films for sustainable moisture harvesting in arid environments

Extracting ubiquitous atmospheric water is a sustainable strategy to enable decentralized access to safely managed water but remains challenging due to its limited daily water output at low relative humidity (≤30% RH). Here, we report super hygroscopic polymer films (SHPFs) composed of renewable biomasses and hygroscopic salt, exhibiting high water uptake of 0.64–0.96 g g⁻¹ at 15–30% RH. Konjac glucomannan facilitates the highly porous structures with enlarged air-polymer interfaces for active moisture capture and water vapor transport. Thermoresponsive hydroxypropyl cellulose enables phase transition at a low temperature to assist the release of collected water via hydrophobic interactions. With rapid sorption-desorption kinetics, SHPFs operate 14–24 cycles per day in arid environments, equivalent to a water yield of 5.8–13.3 L kg⁻¹. Synthesized via a simple casting method using sustainable raw materials, SHPFs highlight the potential for low-cost and scalable atmospheric water harvesting technology to mitigate the global water crisis.
