Application of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) in cancer prevention and adjuvant therapy

Cancer is a malignant tumor that kills about 940,000 people worldwide each year. In addition, about 30-77 % of cancer patients will experience cancer metastasis and recurrence, which can increase the cancer mortality rate without prompt treatment. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, wearable devices can detect several physiological indicators of patients to reflect their health status and adjuvant cancer treatment. Based on the triboelectric effect and electrostatic induction phenomenon, triboelectric nanopower generation (TENG) technology can convert mechanical energy into electricity and drive small electronic devices. This article reviewed the research status of TENG in the areas of cancer prevention and adjuvant therapy. TENG can be used for cancer prevention with advanced sensors. At the same time, electrical stimulation generated by TENG can also be used to help inhibit the growth of cancer cells to reduce the proliferation, recurrence, and metastasis of cancer cells. This review will promote the practical application of TENG in healthcare and provide clean and sustainable energy solutions for wearable bioelectronic systems.

In situ engineered magnesium alloy implant for preventing postsurgical tumor recurrence

Invasive tumors are difficult to be completely resected in clinical surgery due to the lack of clear resection margins, which greatly increases the risk of postoperative recurrence. However, chemotherapy and radiotherapy as the traditional means of postoperative adjuvant therapy, are limited in postoperative applications, such as multi-drug resistance and low sensitivity, etc. Therefore, an engineered magnesium alloy rod is designed as a postoperative implant to completely remove postoperative residual tumor tissue and inhibit tumor recurrence by gas and mild magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MMHT). As a reactive metal, magnesium alloy responds to the acidic tumor microenvironment by continuously generating hydrogen. The in-situ generation of hydrogen not only protects the surrounding normal tissue, but also enables the magnesium alloy to achieve MMHT under low-intensity alternating magnetic field (AMF). Furthermore, the numerous reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by heat stress will combine with nitric oxide (NO) generated in situ, to produce more toxic reactive nitrogen species (RNS) storm. In summary, engineered magnesium alloy can completely remove residual tumor tissue and inhibit tumor recurrence by MMHT and RNS storm under low-intensity AMF, and the biodegradability of magnesium alloy makes great potential for clinical application.

Soft bioelectronics for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in neurological diseases

Physical and chemical signals in the central nervous system yield crucial information that is clinically relevant under both physiological and pathological conditions. The emerging field of bioelectronics focuses on the monitoring and manipulation of neurophysiological signals with high spatiotemporal resolution and minimal invasiveness. Significant advances have been realized through innovations in materials and structural design, which have markedly enhanced mechanical and electrical properties, biocompatibility, and overall device performance. The diagnostic and therapeutic potential of soft bioelectronics has been corroborated across a diverse array of pre-clinical settings. This review summarizes recent studies that underscore the developments and applications of soft bioelectronics in neurological disorders, including neuromonitoring, neuromodulation, tumor treatment, and biosensing. Limitations and outlooks of soft devices are also discussed in terms of power supply, wireless control, biocompatibility, and the integration of artificial intelligence. This review highlights the potential of soft bioelectronics as a future platform to promote deciphering brain functions and clinical outcomes of neurological diseases.

Edge-enhanced super microgenerator based on a two-dimensional Schottky junction

Super microgenerator (SMG) refers to a generator that can efficiently convert extremely weak external stimuli into electrical energy and has a small size, high power density and long lifespan, offer ground-breaking solutions for powering wearable devices, wireless distributed sensors and implanted medical equipment. However, the friction and wear between the interfaces of ordinary microgenerator results in an extremely low lifespan. Here, we present a prototype of SMGs based on a 2D-2D (graphite-MoS2) Schottky contact in the state of structural superlubricity (no wear and nearly zero friction between two contacted solid surfaces). What is even more interesting is when the graphite flake is slid from the bulk to the edge of MoS2, the output current will enhance from 31 to 56 A m-2. Through the I-V curve measurement, we found that the conductive channel across the junction can be activated and further enhanced at the edge of MoS2compare to bulk, which provide the explanation for the above-mentioned edge enhancement of power generation. Above results provide the design principles of high-performance SMGs based on 2D-2D Schottky junctions.

Recent Progress in Implantable Drug Delivery Systems

In recent years, tremendous effort is devoted to developing platforms, such as implantable drug delivery systems (IDDSs), with temporally and spatially controlled drug release capabilities and improved adherence. IDDSs have multiple advantages: i) the timing and location of drug delivery can be controlled by patients using specific stimuli (light, sound, electricity, magnetism, etc.). Some intelligent "closed-loop" IDDS can even realize self-management without human participation. ii) IDDSs enable continuous and stable delivery of drugs over a long period (months to years) and iii) to administer drugs directly to the lesion, thereby helping reduce dosage and side effects. iv) IDDSs enable personalized drug delivery according to patient needs. The high demand for such systems has prompted scientists to make efforts to develop intelligent IDDS. In this review, several common stimulus-responsive mechanisms including endogenous (e.g., pH, reactive oxygen species, proteins, etc.) and exogenous stimuli (e.g., light, sound, electricity, magnetism, etc.), are given in detail. Besides, several types of IDDS reported in recent years are reviewed, including various stimulus-responsive systems based on the above mechanisms, radio frequency-controlled IDDS, "closed-loop" IDDS, self-powered IDDS, etc. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of various IDDS, bottleneck problems, and possible solutions are analyzed to provide directions for subsequent research.

Knockdown of trem2 promotes proinflammatory microglia and inhibits glioma progression via the JAK2/STAT3 and NF-κB pathways

BACKGROUND

In the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME), triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (trem2) is widely considered to be a crucial molecule on tumor-associated macrophages(TAMs). Multiple studies have shown that trem2 may function as an immune checkpoint in various malignant tumors, mediating tumor immune evasion. However, its specific molecular mechanisms, especially in glioma, remain elusive.

METHODS

Lentivirus was transfected to establish cells with stable knockdown of trem2. A Transwell system was used for segregated coculture of glioma cells and microglia. Western blotting, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT‒PCR), and immunofluorescence (IF) were used to measure the expression levels of target proteins. The proliferation, invasion, and migration of cells were detected by colony formation, cell counting kit-8 (CCK8), 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) and transwell assays. The cell cycle, apoptosis rate and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level of cells were assessed using flow cytometry assays. The comet assay and tube formation assay were used to detect DNA damage in glioma cells and angiogenesis activity, respectively. Gl261 cell lines and C57BL/6 mice were used to construct the glioma orthotopic transplantation tumor model.

RESULTS

Trem2 was highly overexpressed in glioma TAMs. Knocking down trem2 in microglia suppressed the growth and angiogenesis activity of glioma cells in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, knockdown of trem2 in microglia promoted proinflammatory microglia and inhibited anti-inflammatory microglia by activating jak2/stat1 and inhibiting the NF-κB p50 signaling pathway. The proinflammatory microglia produced high concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and high levels of the proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β, and caused further DNA damage and promoted the apoptosis rate of tumor cells.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings revealed that trem2 in microglia plays a significant role in the TIME of gliomas. Knockdown of trem2 in microglia might help to improve the efficiency of inhibiting glioma growth and delaying tumor progression and provide new ideas for further treatment of glioma.

Manganese-Doped Potassium Chloride Nanoelectrodes to Potentiate Electrochemical Immunotherapy

Hypochlorous acid (HClO), as a powerful oxidizer, is obtained from the oxidation of Cl- ions during the electrochemical therapy (EChT) process for cancer therapy. However, the extracellular generated HClO is inadequate to inhibit effective tumor cell death. Herein, manganese-doped potassium chloride nanocubes (MPC NCs) fabricated and modified with amphipathic polymer PEG (PMPC NCs) to function as massive three-dimensional nanoelectrodes (NEs) were developed to enhance the generation of HClO for electrochemical immunotherapy under an alternating electric field. Under an square-wave alternating current (AC) electric field, the generation of HClO was boosted by PMPC NEs due to the enlarged active surface area, enhanced mass transfer rate, and improved electrocatalytic activity. Notably, PMPC NEs upregulated the intracellular HClO concentration to induce robust immunogenic cell death (ICD) under an AC electric field. Meanwhile, the electric-triggered release of Mn2+ effectively stimulated dendritic cells (DCs) maturation. In vivo results illustrated that PMPC-mediated EChT inhibited tumor growth and triggered the promotion of the immune response to regulate the tumor immune microenvironment. Based on the potent antitumor immunity, PMPC-mediated EChT was further combined with an immune checkpoint inhibitor (αCTLA-4) to realize combined EChT-immunotherapy, which demonstrated enhanced tumor inhibition of the primary tumors and an abscopal effect on distant tumors. To summarize, our work highlights the application of electrochemical-immunotherapy technology in tumor therapy.

Mitochondrial Targeted Thermosensitive Nanocarrier for Near-Infrared-Triggered Precise Synergetic Photothermal Nitric Oxide Chemotherapy

Nitric oxide (NO) intervenes, that is, a potential treatment strategy, and has attracted wide attention in the field of tumor therapy. However, the therapeutic effect of NO is still poor, due to its short half-life and instability. Therapeutic concentration ranges of NO should be delivered to the target tissue sites, cell, and even subcellular organelles and to control NO generation. Mitochondria have been considered a major target in cancer therapy for their essential roles in cancer cell metabolism and apoptosis. In this study, mesoporous silicon-coated gold nanorods encapsulated with a mitochondria targeted and the thermosensitive lipid layer (AuNR@MSN-lipid-DOX) served as the carrier to load NO prodrug (BNN6) to build the near-infrared-triggered synergetic photothermal NO-chemotherapy platform (AuNR@MSN(BNN6)-lipid-DOX). The core of AuNR@MSN exhibited excellent photothermal conversion capability and high loading efficiency in terms of BNN6, reaching a high value of 220 mg/g (w/w), which achieved near-infrared-triggered precise release of NO. The outer biocompatible lipid layer, comprising thermosensitive phospholipid DPPC and mitochondrial-targeted DSPE-PEG2000-DOX, guided the whole nanoparticle to the mitochondria of 4T1 cells observed through confocal microscopy. In the mitochondria, the nanoparticles increased the local temperature over 42 °C under NIR irradiation, and a high NO concentration from BNN6 detected by the NO probe and DSPE-PEG2000-DOX significantly inhibited 4T1 cancer cells in vitro and in vivo under the synergetic photothermal therapy (PTT)-NO therapy-chemotherapy modes. The built NIR-triggered combination therapy nanoplatform can serve as a strategy for multimodal collaboration.

Nanocatalysts for modulating antitumor immunity: fabrication, mechanisms and applications

Immunotherapy harnesses the inherent immune system in the body to generate systemic antitumor immunity, offering a promising modality for defending against cancer. However, tumor immunosuppression and evasion seriously restrict the immune response rates in clinical settings. Catalytic nanomedicines can transform tumoral substances/metabolites into therapeutic products in situ, offering unique advantages in antitumor immunotherapy. Through catalytic reactions, both tumor eradication and immune regulation can be simultaneously achieved, favoring the development of systemic antitumor immunity. In recent years, with advancements in catalytic chemistry and nanotechnology, catalytic nanomedicines based on nanozymes, photocatalysts, sonocatalysts, Fenton catalysts, electrocatalysts, piezocatalysts, thermocatalysts and radiocatalysts have been rapidly developed with vast applications in cancer immunotherapy. This review provides an introduction to the fabrication of catalytic nanomedicines with an emphasis on their structures and engineering strategies. Furthermore, the catalytic substrates and state-of-the-art applications of nanocatalysts in cancer immunotherapy have also been outlined and discussed. The relationships between nanostructures and immune regulating performance of catalytic nanomedicines are highlighted to provide a deep understanding of their working mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment. Finally, the challenges and development trends are revealed, aiming to provide new insights for the future development of nanocatalysts in catalytic immunotherapy.

Enhancing Deep-Seated Melanoma Therapy through Wearable Self-Powered Microneedle Patch

Effective treatment of deep-seated tumors relies on enhanced drug penetration in transdermal drug delivery systems. While microneedles (MNs) and iontophoresis techniques have shown improved transdermal drug delivery efficiency, challenges such as skin elasticity, high electrical resistance of the stratum corneum, and external power supply requirements hinder their efficacy in treating deep-seated tumors. In this study, a wearable, self-powered MN patch that integrates a flexible triboelectric nanogenerator (F-TENG) is presented, aimed at advancing deep-seated tumor therapy. MNs are composed of water-soluble materials mixed with negatively charged pH-responsive nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with therapeutic drugs. The F-TENG harnesses personal mechanical movements generate electrical energy. Leveraging the advantages of both MNs and F-TENG, therapeutic NPs can penetrate deep skin locations upon MN patch insertion, releasing drugs rapidly in acidic tumor tissues. Owing to these features, a single administration of the integrated MN-patch in a mouse model with deep-seated melanoma exhibits superior therapeutic efficacy in inhibiting deep-located tumor compared to using the MN-patch alone, indicating promising potential for treating tumors at deep sites.

Advancing piezoelectric 2D nanomaterials for applications in drug delivery systems and therapeutic approaches

Precision drug delivery and multimodal synergistic therapy are crucial in treating diverse ailments, such as cancer, tissue damage, and degenerative diseases. Electrodes that emit electric pulses have proven effective in enhancing molecule release and permeability in drug delivery systems. Moreover, the physiological electrical microenvironment plays a vital role in regulating biological functions and triggering action potentials in neural and muscular tissues. Due to their unique noncentrosymmetric structures, many 2D materials exhibit outstanding piezoelectric performance, generating positive and negative charges under mechanical forces. This ability facilitates precise drug targeting and ensures high stimulus responsiveness, thereby controlling cellular destinies. Additionally, the abundant active sites within piezoelectric 2D materials facilitate efficient catalysis through piezochemical coupling, offering multimodal synergistic therapeutic strategies. However, the full potential of piezoelectric 2D nanomaterials in drug delivery system design remains underexplored due to research gaps. In this context, the current applications of piezoelectric 2D materials in disease management are summarized in this review, and the development of drug delivery systems influenced by these materials is forecast.

BiTiS3 bio-transducer with explosive on-demand generation of NO gas for synergetic cancer therapy

Combined photothermal therapy and nitric oxide (NO)-mediated gas therapy has shown great potential as a cancer treatment. However, the on-demand release of NO at a high concentration presents a challenge owing to the lack of an ideal bio-transducer with a high loading capacity of NO donors and sufficient energy to induce NO release. Here, we present a new 2D BiTiS3 nanosheet that is synthesized, loaded with the NO donor (BNN6), and conjugated with PEG-iRGD to produce a multifunctional bio-transducer (BNN6-BiTiS3-iRGD) for the on-demand production of NO. The BiTiS3 nanosheets not only have a high loading capacity of NO donors (750%), but also exhibit a high photothermal conversion efficiency (59.5%) after irradiation by a 1064-nm laser at 0.5 W/cm2. As a result of the above advantages, the temporal-controllable generation of NO within a large dynamic range (from 0 to 344 μM) is achieved by adjusting power densities, which is among the highest efficiency values reported for NO generators so far. Moreover, the targeted accumulation of BNN6-BiTiS3-iRGD at tumor sites leads to spatial-controllable NO release. In vitro and in vivo assessments demonstrate synergistic NO gas therapy with mild photothermal therapy based on BNN6-BiTiS3-iRGD. Our work provides insights into the design and application of other 2D nanomaterial-based therapeutic platforms.

Self-Powered and Self-Healable Extraocular-Muscle-Like Actuator Based on Dielectric Elastomer Actuator and Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Although dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are promising artificial muscles for use as visual prostheses in patients with oculomotor nerve palsy (ONP), high driving voltage coupled with vulnerable compliant electrodes limits their safe long-term service. Herein, a self-healable polydimethylsiloxane compliant electrode based on reversible imine bonds and hydrogen bonds is prepared and coated on an acrylic ester film to develop a self-healable DEA (SDEA), followed by actuation with a high-output triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) to construct a self-powered DEA (TENG-SDEA). Under 135.9 kV mm-1 , the SDEA exhibits an elevated actuated strain of 50.6%, comparable to the actuation under DC power. Moreover, the mechanically damaged TENG-SDEA displays a self-healing efficiency of over 90% for 10 cycles. The TENG ensures the safe using of TENG-SDEAs and an extraocular-muscle-like actuator with oriented motion ability integrated by several TENG-SDEAs is constructed. Additionally, the SDEA is directly used as a flexible capacitive sensor for real-time monitoring of the patient's muscle movement. Accordingly, a medical aid system based on a conjunction of the extraocular-muscle-like actuator and a flexible capacitive sensor is manufactured to help the patients suffering from ONP with physical rehabilitation and treatment.

Piezoelectric Ba0.85 Sr0.15 TiO3 Nanosonosensitizer with Nitric Oxide Delivery for Boosting Cancer Therapy

The efficacy of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) mainly relies on the sonosensitizers, which generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon ultrasound (US) stimulation. However, the limited availability of high-efficiency sonosensitizers hampers the therapeutic effectiveness of SDT as a standalone modality. In this work, a robust sonodynamic and gas cancer therapeutic platform is constructed based on strontium (Sr) doped barium titanate (BST) piezoelectric nanoparticles functionalized with L-arginine (BST@LA). The doping of Sr into A site of the ABO3 piezoelectric nanocrystals not only introduces oxygen vacancies into the nanoparticles and enhance the intrinsic piezoelectricity, but also narrows the semiconductor band gap and enhances charge carrier migration, all of which facilitate the sonodynamic production of superoxide anion (•O2 - ) and hydroxyl radical (•OH). In addition, the generated ROS promotes the decomposition of the surface-tethered LA, enabling the controlled release of nitric oxide (NO) gas at the tumor site, thereby achieving a combination therapeutic effect. In vivo experiments exhibit remarkable tumor suppression rate (89.5%) in 4T1 tumor mice model, demonstrating the effectiveness of this strategy. The ion doping and oxygen vacancy engineering to improve sonosensitizers, along with the synergistic combination of sonodynamic and gas therapy, provides promising avenues for improving cancer therapy.

Mechano-Driven Tribo-Electrophoresis Enabled Human-Droplet Interaction in 3D Space

Electronically controlled droplet manipulation has widespread applications in biochemistry, life sciences, and industry. However, current technologies such as electrowetting, electrostatics, and surface charge printing rely on complex electrode arrays and external power supplies, leading to inefficient manipulation. In light of these limitations, a novel method is proposed, which leverages tribo-electrophoresis (TEP) to pipette in an oil medium, thereby enabling human-droplet interactions to be constructed with greater efficiency. The approach involves the rational design of a triboelectric nanogenerator-electrostatic tweezer that generates an electric field to charge the droplet and improves the maneuverability of the charged droplet, including aligned/non-aligned pipetting and stable transport in the clamped state, which can be accomplished solely by hand motion. The TEP method not only provides droplets with freedom to move in three dimensions but also offers a feasibility case for chemical reactions in the liquid phase and non-invasive sample extraction. This breakthrough establishes a cornerstone for human-droplet interactions capitalized on triboelectric nanogenerators, opening new avenues for research in droplet manipulation.

Hydrogel-assisted microfluidic spinning of stretchable fibers via fluidic and interfacial self-adaptations

Stretchable polymeric fibers have enormous potential, but their production requires rigorous environmental controls and considerable resource consumption. It's also challenging for elastic polymers with high performance but poor spinnability, such as silicones like polydimethylsiloxane and Ecoflex. We present a hydrogel-assisted microfluidic spinning (HAMS) method to address these challenges by encapsulating their prepolymers within arbitrarily long, protective, and sacrificable hydrogel fibers. By designing simple apparatuses and manipulating the fluidic and interfacial self-adaptations of oil/water flows, we successfully produce fibers with widely controllable diameter (0.04 to 3.70 millimeters), notable length, high quality (e.g., smooth surface, whole-length uniformity, and rounded section), and remarkable stretchability (up to 1300%) regardless of spinnability. Uniquely, this method allows an easy, effective, and controllable reshaping production of helical fibers with exceptional stretchability and mechanical compliance. We deeply reveal the mechanisms in producing these fibers and demonstrate their potential as textile components, optoelectronic devices, and actuators. The HAMS method would be a powerful tool for mass-producing high-quality stretchable fibers.

Nitric Oxide: Physiological Functions, Delivery, and Biomedical Applications

Nitric oxide (NO) is a gaseous molecule that has a central role in signaling pathways involved in numerous physiological processes (e.g., vasodilation, neurotransmission, inflammation, apoptosis, and tumor growth). Due to its gaseous form, NO has a short half-life, and its physiology role is concentration dependent, often restricting its function to a target site. Providing NO from an external source is beneficial in promoting cellular functions and treatment of different pathological conditions. Hence, the multifaceted role of NO in physiology and pathology has garnered massive interest in developing strategies to deliver exogenous NO for the treatment of various regenerative and biomedical complexities. NO-releasing platforms or donors capable of delivering NO in a controlled and sustained manner to target tissues or organs have advanced in the past few decades. This review article discusses in detail the generation of NO via the enzymatic functions of NO synthase as well as from NO donors and the multiple biological and pathological processes that NO modulates. The methods for incorporating of NO donors into diverse biomaterials including physical, chemical, or supramolecular techniques are summarized. Then, these NO-releasing platforms are highlighted in terms of advancing treatment strategies for various medical problems.

Implantable, Biodegradable, and Wireless Triboelectric Devices for Cancer Therapy through Disrupting Microtubule and Actins Dynamics

Electric-field-based stimulation is emerging as a new cancer therapeutic modality through interfering with cell mitosis. To address its limitations of complicated wire connections, bulky devices, and coarse spatial resolution, an improved and alternative method is proposed for wirelessly delivering electrical stimulation into tumor tissues through designing an implantable, biodegradable, and wirelessly controlled therapeutic triboelectric nanogenerator (ET-TENG). With the excitation of ultrasound (US) to the ET-TENG, the implanted ET-TENG can generate an alternating current voltage and concurrently release the loaded anti-mitotic drugs into tumor tissues, which synergistically disrupts the assembly of microtubules and filament actins, induces cell cycle arrest, and finally enhances cell death. With the assistance of US, the device can be completely degraded after the therapy, getting free of a secondary surgical extraction. The device can not only work around those unresectable tumors, but also provides a new application of wireless electric field in cancer therapy.

Artificial intelligence enhanced sensors - enabling technologies to next-generation healthcare and biomedical platform

The fourth industrial revolution has led to the development and application of health monitoring sensors that are characterized by digitalization and intelligence. These sensors have extensive applications in medical care, personal health management, elderly care, sports, and other fields, providing people with more convenient and real-time health services. However, these sensors face limitations such as noise and drift, difficulty in extracting useful information from large amounts of data, and lack of feedback or control signals. The development of artificial intelligence has provided powerful tools and algorithms for data processing and analysis, enabling intelligent health monitoring, and achieving high-precision predictions and decisions. By integrating the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and health monitoring sensors, it becomes possible to realize a closed-loop system with the functions of real-time monitoring, data collection, online analysis, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations. This review focuses on the development of healthcare artificial sensors enhanced by intelligent technologies from the aspects of materials, device structure, system integration, and application scenarios. Specifically, this review first introduces the great advances in wearable sensors for monitoring respiration rate, heart rate, pulse, sweat, and tears; implantable sensors for cardiovascular care, nerve signal acquisition, and neurotransmitter monitoring; soft wearable electronics for precise therapy. Then, the recent advances in volatile organic compound detection are highlighted. Next, the current developments of human-machine interfaces, AI-enhanced multimode sensors, and AI-enhanced self-sustainable systems are reviewed. Last, a perspective on future directions for further research development is also provided. In summary, the fusion of artificial intelligence and artificial sensors will provide more intelligent, convenient, and secure services for next-generation healthcare and biomedical applications.

Enhanced Sonodynamic Cancer Therapy through Iron-Doping and Oxygen-Vacancy Engineering of Piezoelectric Bismuth Tungstate Nanosheets

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is regarded as a new-rising strategy for cancer treatment with low invasiveness and high tissue penetration, but the scarcity of high-efficiency sonosensitizers has seriously hindered its application. Herein, the iron-doped and oxygen-deficient bismuth tungstate nanosheets (BWO-Fe NSs) with piezotronic effect are synthesized for enhanced SDT. Due to the existence of oxygen defects introduced through Fe doping, the bandgap of BWO-Fe is significantly narrowed so that BWO-Fe can be more easily activated by exogenous ultrasound (US). The oxygen defects acting as the electron traps inhibit the recombination of US-induced electrons and holes. More importantly, the dynamically renewed piezoelectric potential facilitates the migration of electrons and holes to opposite side and causes energy band bending, which further promotes the production of reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, Fe doping endows BWO-Fe with Fenton reactivity, which converts hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) in tumor microenvironment into hydroxyl radicals (•OH), thereby amplifying the cellular oxidative damage and enhancing SDT. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments illustrate their high cytotoxicity and tumor suppression rate against refractory breast cancer in mice. This work may provide an alternative strategy to develop oxygen-deficient piezoelectric sonosensitizers for enhanced SDT via doping metal ions.

A High Performance Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on MXene/Graphene Oxide Electrode for Glucose Detection

A smart sensing platform based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) possesses various advantages such as self-powering, convenience, real-time and biocompatibility. However, the detection limit of the TENG-based sensor is required to be improved. In this study, a high performance TENG-based glucose sensor was proposed by using the Ti₃C₂T_x (MXene)/graphene oxide (GO) composite electrode. The MXene and GO nanosheets are popular 2D materials which possessed high conductivity and a rich surface functional group. The MXene/GO thin films were prepared through electrostatic self-assembly technology, which can effectively impede the agglomeration of two nanoflakes. The as-prepared MXene/GO film presented outstanding mechanical property. To figure out the relationship between the nanostructure of MXene/GO film and the TENG, a series of MXene/GO-based TENG with different GO sizes was characterized. As a result, the TENG with 400 nm GO demonstrated the highest output performance. Subsequently, the optimized TENG was used in glucose detection application without the assistance of a glucose enzyme. This simple and flexible TENG shows promising potential in biosensors and non-invasive health monitoring.
