Novel (Pt-Ox )-(Co-Oy ) Nonbonding Active Structures on Defective Carbon from Oxygen-Rich Coal Tar Pitch for Efficient HER and ORR

Island-in-Sea Structured Pt3Fe Nanoparticles-in-Fe Single Atoms Loaded in Carbon Materials as Superior Electrocatalysts toward Alkaline HER and Acidic ORR

In this work, Pt3Fe nanoparticles (Pt3Fe NPs) with the ordered internal structure and Pt-rich shells surrounded by plenty of Fe single atoms (Fe SAs) as active species (Pt3Fe NP-in-Fe SA) loaded in the carbon materials are successfully fabricated, which are abbreviated as island-in-sea structured (IISS) Pt3Fe NP-in-Fe SA catalysts. Moreover, the synergistic effect of O-bridging between Pt3Fe NPs and Fe SAs, and the ordered internal structured Pt3Fe NPs with Pt-rich shells of an optimal thickness contributes to the achievement of the local acidic environments on the surfaces of Pt3Fe NPs in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the enhancement of the desorption rate of *OH intermediate in the acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In addition, the electronic interactions between Pt3Fe NPs and dispersed Fe SAs cannot only provide efficient electrons transfer, but also prevent the aggregation and dissolution of Pt3Fe NPs. Furthermore, the overpotential and the half wave potential of the as-prepared IISS Pt3Fe NP-in-Fe SA catalysts toward the alkaline HER and toward the acidic ORR are 8 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and 0.933 V, respectively, which is 29 lower and 86 mV higher than those (37 mV and 0.847 V) of commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Rare earth elements induced electronic engineering in Rh cluster toward efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

The unique electronic and crystal structures of rare earth metals (RE) offer promising opportunities for enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) properties of materials. In this work, a series of RE (Sm, Nd, Pr and Ho)-doped Rh@NSPC (NSPC stands for N, S co-doped porous carbon nanosheets) with sizes less than 2 nm are prepared, utilizing a simple, rapid and solvent-free joule-heat pyrolysis method for the first time. The optimized Sm-Rh@NSPC achieves HER performance. The high-catalytic performance and stability of Sm-Rh@NSPC are attributed to the synergistic electronic interactions between Sm and Rh clusters, leading to an increase in the electron cloud density of Rh, which promotes the adsorption of H+, the dissociation of Rh-H bonds and the release of H2. Notably, the overpotential of the Sm-Rh@NSPC catalyst is a mere 18.1 mV at current density of 10 mAcm-2, with a Tafel slope of only 15.2 mV dec-1. Furthermore, it exhibits stable operation in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte at 10 mA cm-2 for more than 100 h. This study provides new insights into the synthesis of composite RE hybrid cluster nanocatalysts and their RE-enhanced electrocatalytic performance. It also introduces fresh perspectives for the development of efficient electrocatalysts.

Advances of Synergistic Electrocatalysis Between Single Atoms and Nanoparticles/Clusters

Combining single atoms with clusters or nanoparticles is an emerging tactic to design efficient electrocatalysts. Both synergy effect and high atomic utilization of active sites in the composite catalysts result in enhanced electrocatalytic performance, simultaneously provide a radical analysis of the interrelationship between structure and activity. In this review, the recent advances of single-atomic site catalysts coupled with clusters or nanoparticles are emphasized. Firstly, the synthetic strategies, characterization, dynamics and types of single atoms coupled with clusters/nanoparticles are introduced, and then the key factors controlling the structure of the composite catalysts are discussed. Next, several clean energy catalytic reactions performed over the synergistic composite catalysts are illustrated. Eventually, the encountering challenges and recommendations for the future advancement of synergistic structure in energy-transformation electrocatalysis are outlined.

Modulating the Energy Barrier via the Synergism of Cu3P and CoP to Accelerate Kinetics for Bolstering Oxygen Electrocatalysis in Zn-Air Batteries

Modulating the energy barrier of reaction intermediates to surmount sluggish kinetics is an utterly intriguing strategy for amplifying the oxygen reduction reaction. Herein, a Cu3P/CoP hybrid is incorporated on hollow porous N-doped carbon nanospheres via dopamine self-polymerization and high-temperature treatment. The resultant Cu3P/CoP@NC showcases a favorable mass activity of 4.41 mA mg-1 and a kinetic current density of 2.38 mA cm-2. Strikingly, the catalyst endows the aqueous Zn-air battery (ZAB) with a large power density of 209.0 mW cm-2, superb cyclability over 317 h, and promising application prospects in flexible ZAB. Theoretical simulations reveal that Cu functions as a modulator to modify the free energy of intermediates and adsorbs the O2 on the Co sites, hence rushing the reaction kinetics. The open and hydrophilic hollow spherical mesoporous structure provides unimpeded channels for reactant diffusion and electrolyte penetration, whereas the exposed inner and outer surfaces can confer a plethora of accessible actives sites. This research establishes a feasible design concept to tune catalytic activity for non-noble metal materials by construction of a rational nanoframework.

Molten-Salt Electrochemical-Assisted Synthesis of the CeO2-OV@GC Composite-Supported Pt Clusters with a Pt-O-Ce Structure for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Highly active and robust Pt-based electrocatalysts for an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are of crucial significance for the development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, the high-loading and well-dispersive Pt clusters on graphitic carbon-supported CeO2 with abundant oxygen vacancies (PtAC/CeO2-OV@GC) were successfully fabricated by a molten-salt electrochemical-assisted method. The bonding of Pt with the highly electronegative O induces charge redistribution through the Pt-O-Ce structure, thus reducing the adsorption energies of oxygen-containing species. Such a PtAC/CeO2-OV@GC electrocatalyst exhibits a greatly enhanced ORR performance with a mass activity of 0.41 ± 0.02 A·mg-1Pt at 0.9 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode, which is 2.7 times the value of a commercial Pt/C catalyst and shows negligible activity decay after 20000 cycles of accelerated degradation tests. It is anticipated that this work will provide enlightening guidance on the controllable synthesis and rational design of high-performance Pt-based electrocatalysts for PEMFCs.

Oxygen-Vacancy-Induced Formation of Pt-Based Intermetallics on MXene with Strong Metal-Support Interactions for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The Pt-based alloys can moderate the binding energies of oxygenated species on the catalytic surface, endowing the superior catalytic performance towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Nevertheless, it is still challenging to explore general methods to synthesize structurally ordered intermetallics with uniform distributions. Herein, the strong metal-support interaction is employed to facilitate the interdiffusion of Pt/M atoms by establishing a tunnel of oxygen vacancy on ultrathin Ti3C2Tx (MXene) sheets, synthesizing the ordered PtFe, PtCo, PtZn, PdFe, PdZn intermetallics loaded onto Ti3C2Tx. Furthermore, the in-situ generation of Ti-O from Ti3C2Tx could be bonded with Pt and forming Pt-O-Ti, resulting in charge redistribution through Pt-O-Ti structure. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the valuable charge redistribution can be observed at the interface and extended even to at the distance of two nanometers from the interface, which can modulate the Pt-Pt distance, optimize Pt-O binding energy and enhance intrinsic activity towards ORR. The strong coupling interaction between PtFe and Ti3C2Tx containing the titanium oxide layer endows the high stability of the composites. This work not only presents a general synthesis strategy for intermetallics but also provides a new insight that metal-support interaction is essential for the structural evolution of intermetallics on materials with oxygen vacancies.

Ultra-Stable Ti Vacancies-Pt Atomic Clusters Structure on Titanium Oxycarbide Supports for High Current Density Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Electrocatalysts with low Pt loading mass to achieve high current density (≥1 A cm-2) for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are still extremely challenging due to the limited intrinsic activity and weak stability of catalytic sites. The modulation of the electronic microenvironment of the support-Pt structure is crucial to enhance the intrinsic activity and stability of catalytic sites. Herein, an innovative titanium oxycarbide (TiVCO) solid solution with Ti vacancies (TiV) is proposed as support to anchor sub-nanoscale Pt atomic clusters (Pt ACs) and a stable "TiV-Pt ACs" structure is carefully designed. The electronic microenvironment of "TiV-Pt ACs" is indirectly optimized by an unsaturated C/O site near TiV. Thanks to this, novel "TiV-Pt ACs" structure (Pt@TiVCO) with low Pt loading mass (2.44 wt.%) exhibits excellent HER activity in acidic solution and the mass activity is more than ten times that of commercial 20% Pt/C at the overpotentials of 50 and 100 mV. Particularly, Pt@TiVCO shows amazing stability at high and fluctuating current density of 1-2 A cm-2 for 120 h. This work provides a novel and promising method to develop stable and low-loading Pt-based catalysts adapting to high current density.

Directed Dual Charge Pumping Tunes the d-Orbital Configuration of Pt Cluster Boosting Hydrogen Evolution Kinetic

Achieving high catalytic activity with a minimum amount of platinum (Pt) is crucial for accelerating the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis, yet it remains a significant challenge. Herein, a directed dual-charge pumping strategy to tune the d-orbital electronic distribution of Pt nanoclusters for efficient HER catalysis is proposed. Theoretical analysis reveals that the ligand effect and electronic metal-support interactions (EMSI) create an effective directional electron transfer channel for the d-orbital electrons of Pt, which in turn optimizes the binding strength to H*, thereby significantly enhancing HER efficiency of the Pt site. Experimentally, this directed dual-charge pumping strategy is validated by elaborating Sb-doped SnO2 (ATO) supported Fe-doped PtSn heterostructure catalysts (Fe-PtSn/ATO). The synthesized 3%Fe-PtSn/ATO catalysts exhibit lower overpotential (requiring only 10.5 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm- 2), higher mass activity (28.6 times higher than commercial 20 wt.% Pt/C), and stability in the HER process in acidic media. This innovative strategy presents a promising pathway for the development of highly efficient HER catalysts with low Pt loading.

Highly Accurate Determination of the Total Amount of Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+ in a Natural Water Environment Revealed by Dynamic Simulation and DFT Calculation: Benefit from the Electron Inverse Effect of Pt Nanoclusters over Defective g-C3N4

Although utilizing nanomaterial-modified electrodes for lead ion detection has achieved great success, most of them are carried out under acidic conditions and ignore the variation of Pb(II) speciation at different pH conditions, leading to the potential inaccuracy of Pb(II) detection in a neutral natural water environment. Thus, designing a novel catalyst with high accuracy for the detection of various forms of the total amount of Pb(II) (Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+) in neutral waters is significant. Herein, Pt nanoclusters (Pt NCs) were elaborately constructed and stabilized on the Co single-atom-doped g-C3N4 with abundant N vacancies (Pt NCs/VN-C3N4), which achieved the ultrasensitive detection (102.16 μM μA-1) of Pb(II) in neutral conditions. The dynamic simulation and theoretical calculations reveal that the parallel deposition of Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+ occurs on the electrode surface modified by Pt NCs/VN-C3N4, and the current peaks of Pb(II) are cocontributed by Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+ species. An "electron inverse" phenomenon in Pt NCs/VN-C3N4 from the VN-C3N4 substrate to Pt NCs endows Pt NCs in an electron-rich state, serving as active centers to promote rapid and efficient reduction for both Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+, facilitating the accurate detection of the total amount of Pb(II) in all forms in the actual water environment.

Intercalated PtCo Electrocatalyst of Vanadium Metal Oxide Increases Charge Density to Facilitate Hydrogen Evolution

Efforts to develop high-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are of utmost importance in ensuring sustainable hydrogen production. The controllable fabrication of inexpensive, durable, and high-efficient HER catalysts still remains a great challenge. Herein, we introduce a universal strategy aiming to achieve rapid synthesis of highly active hydrogen evolution catalysts using a controllable hydrogen insertion method and solvothermal process. Hydrogen vanadium bronze HxV2O5 was obtained through controlling the ethanol reaction rate in the oxidization process of hydrogen peroxide. Subsequently, the intermetallic PtCoVO supported on two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets was prepared by a solvothermal method at the oil/water interface. In terms of HER performance, PtCoVO/g-C3N4 demonstrates superior characteristics compared to PtCo/g-C3N4 and PtCoV/g-C3N4. This superiority can be attributed to the notable influence of oxygen vacancies in HxV2O5 on the electrical properties of the catalyst. By adjusting the relative proportions of metal atoms in the PtCoVO/g-C3N4 nanomaterials, the PtCoVO/g-C3N4 nanocomposites show significant HER overpotential of η10 = 92 mV, a Tafel slope of 65.21 mV dec-1, and outstanding stability (a continuous test lasting 48 h). The nanoarchitecture of a g-C3N4-supported PtCoVO nanoalloy catalyst exhibits exceptional resistance to nanoparticle migration and corrosion, owing to the strong interaction between the metal nanoparticles and the g-C3N4 support. Pt, Co, and V simultaneous doping has been shown by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to enhance the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level. This augmentation leads to a higher charge density and a reduction in the adsorption energy of intermediates.

Inter-site structural heterogeneity induction of single atom Fe catalysts for robust oxygen reduction

Metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts with hierarchically dispersed porosity are deemed as efficient geometry for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, catalytic performance determined by individual and interacting sites originating from structural heterogeneity is particularly elusive and yet remains to be understood. Here, an efficient hierarchically porous Fe single atom catalyst (Fe SAs-HP) is prepared with Fe atoms densely resided at micropores and mesopores. Fe SAs-HP exhibits robust ORR performance with half-wave potential of 0.94 V and turnover frequency of 5.99 e-1s-1site-1 at 0.80 V. Theoretical simulations unravel a structural heterogeneity induced optimization, where mesoporous Fe-N4 acts as real active centers as a result of long-range electron regulation by adjacent microporous sites, facilitating O2 activation and desorption of key intermediate *OH. Multilevel operando characterization results identify active Fe sites undergo a dynamic evolution from basic Fe-N4 to active Fe-N3 under working conditions. Our findings reveal the structural origin of enhanced intrinsic activity for hierarchically porous Fe-N4 sites.

Facilitating alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction on the hetero-interfaced Ru/RuO2 through Pt single atoms doping

Exploring an active and cost-effective electrocatalyst alternative to carbon-supported platinum nanoparticles for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have remained elusive to date. Here, we report a catalyst based on platinum single atoms (SAs) doped into the hetero-interfaced Ru/RuO2 support (referred to as Pt-Ru/RuO2), which features a low HER overpotential, an excellent stability and a distinctly enhanced cost-based activity compared to commercial Pt/C and Ru/C in 1 M KOH. Advanced physico-chemical characterizations disclose that the sluggish water dissociation is accelerated by RuO2 while Pt SAs and the metallic Ru facilitate the subsequent H* combination. Theoretical calculations correlate with the experimental findings. Furthermore, Pt-Ru/RuO2 only requires 1.90 V to reach 1 A cm-2 and delivers a high price activity in the anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C. This research offers a feasible guidance for developing the noble metal-based catalysts with high performance and low cost toward practical H2 production.

Electrocatalytic Coenhancement of Bimetallic Polyphthalocyanine-Anchored Ru Nanoclusters Enabling Efficient Overall Water Splitting at Ampere-Level Current Densities

Efficient electrocatalysts capable of operating continuously at industrial ampere-level current densities are crucial for large-scale applications of electrocatalytic water decomposition for hydrogen production. However, long-term industrial overall water splitting using a single electrocatalyst remains a major challenge. Here, bimetallic polyphthalocyanine (FeCoPPc)-anchored Ru nanoclusters, an innovative electrocatalyst comprising the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) active Ru and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) active FeCoPPc, engineered for efficient overall water splitting are demonstrated. By density functional theory calculations and systematic experiments, the electrocatalytic coenhancement effect resulting from unique charge redistribution, which synergistically boosts the HER activity of Ru and the OER activity of FeCoPPc by optimizing the adsorption energy of intermediates, is unveiled. As a result, even at a large current density of 2.0 A cm-2 , the catalyst exhibits low overpotentials of 220 and 308 mV, respectively, for HER and OER. It exhibits excellent stability, requiring only 1.88 V of cell voltage to achieve a current density of 2.0 A cm-2 in a 6.0 m KOH electrolyte at 70 °C, with a remarkable operational stability of over 100 h. This work provides a new electrocatalytic coenhancement strategy for the design and synthesis of electrocatalyst, paving the way for industrial-scale overall water splitting applications.

Laser Synthesis of PtMo Single-Atom Alloy Electrode for Ultralow Voltage Hydrogen Generation

Maximizing atom-utilization efficiency and high current stability are crucial for the platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, the Pt single-atom anchored molybdenum (Mo) foil (Pt-SA/Mo-L) as a single-atom alloy electrode is synthesized by the laser ablation strategy. The local thermal effect with fast rising-cooling rate of laser can achieve the single-atom distribution of the precious metals (e.g., Pt, Rh, Ir, and Ru) onto the Mo foil. The synthesized self-standing Pt-SA/Mo-L electrode exhibits splendid catalytic activity (31 mV at 10 mA cm-2 ) and high-current-density stability (≈850 mA cm-2 for 50 h) for HER in acidic media. The strong coordination of Pt-Mo bonding in Pt-SA/Mo-L is critical for the efficient and stable HER. In addition, the ultralow electrolytic voltage of 0.598 V to afford the current density of 50 mA cm-2 is realized by utilization of the anodic molybdenum oxidation instead of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here a universal synthetic strategy of single-atom alloys (PtMo, RhMo, IrMo, and RuMo) as self-standing electrodes is provided for ultralow voltage and membrane-free hydrogen production.

Multi-d Electron Synergy in LaNi1-x Cox Ru Intermetallics Boosts Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Despite the fact that d-band center theory links the d electron structure of transition metals to their catalytic activity, it is yet unknown how the synergistic effect of multi-d electrons impacts catalytic performance. Herein, novel LaNi1-x Cox Ru intermetallics containing 5d, 4d, and 3d electrons were prepared. In these compounds, the 5d orbital of La transfers electrons to the 4d orbital of Ru, which provides adsorption sites for H*. The 3d orbitals of Ni and Co interact with the 5d and 4d orbitals to generate an anisotropic electron distribution, which facilitates the adsorption and desorption of OH*. The synergistic effect of multi-d electrons ensures efficient catalytic activity. The optimized LaNi0.5 Co0.5 Ru has an overpotential of 43mV at 10 mA cm-2 for alkaline electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. Beyond offering a variety of new electrocatalysts, this work reveals the multi-d electron synergy in promoting catalytic reaction.

Precise Design and Modification Engineering of Single-Atom Catalytic Materials for Oxygen Reduction

Due to their unique electronic and structural properties, single-atom catalytic materials (SACMs) hold great promise for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Coordinating environmental and engineering strategies is the key to improving the ORR performance of SACMs. This review summarizes the latest research progress and breakthroughs of SACMs in the field of ORR catalysis. First, the research progress on the catalytic mechanism of SACMs acting on ORR is reviewed, including the latest research results on the origin of SACMs activity and the analysis of pre-adsorption mechanism. The study of the pre-adsorption mechanism is an important breakthrough direction to explore the origin of the high activity of SACMs and the practical and theoretical understanding of the catalytic process. Precise coordination environment modification, including in-plane, axial, and adjacent site modifications, can enhance the intrinsic catalytic activity of SACMs and promote the ORR process. Additionally, several engineering strategies are discussed, including multiple SACMs, high loading, and atomic site confinement. Multiple SACMs synergistically enhance catalytic activity and selectivity, while high loading can provide more active sites for catalytic reactions. Overall, this review provides important insights into the design of advanced catalysts for ORR.

Embedding Atomically Dispersed Manganese/Gadolinium Dual Sites in Oxygen Vacancy-Enriched Biodegradable Bimetallic Silicate Nanoplatform for Potentiating Catalytic Therapy

Due to their atomically dispersed active centers, single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) have unparalleled advantages in cancer catalytic therapy. Here, loaded with chlorin e6 (Ce6), a hydrothermally mass-produced bimetallic silicate-based nanoplatforms with atomically dispersed manganese/gadolinium (Mn/Gd) dual sites and oxygen vacancies (OVs) (PMnSA GMSNs-V@Ce6) is constructed for tumor glutathione (GSH)-triggered chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and O2 -alleviated photodynamic therapy. The band gaps of silica are significantly reduced from 2.78 to 1.88 eV by doping with metal ions, which enables it to be excited by a 650 nm laser to produce electron-hole pairs, thereby facilitating the generation of reactive oxygen species. The Gd sites can modulate the local electrons of the atom-catalyzed Mn sites, which contribute to the generation of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals (• OH). Tumor GSH-triggered Mn2+ release can convert endogenous H2 O2 to • OH and realize GSH-depletion-enhanced CDT. Significantly, the hydrothermally generated OVs can not only capture Mn and Gd atoms to form atomic sites but also can elongate and weaken the O-O bonds of H2 O2 , thereby improving the efficacy of Fenton reactions. The degraded Mn2+ /Gd3+ ions can be used as tumor-specific magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. All the experimental results demonstrate the great potential of PMnSA GMSNs-V@Ce6 as cancer theranostic agent.

Dual-Active-Sites Single-Atom Catalysts for Advanced Applications

Dual-Active-Sites Single-Atom catalysts (DASs SACs) are not only the improvement of SACs but also the expansion of dual-atom catalysts. The DASs SACs contains dual active sites, one of which is a single atomic active site, and the other active site can be a single atom or other type of active site, endowing DASs SACs with excellent catalytic performance and a wide range of applications. The DASs SACs are categorized into seven types, including the neighboring mono metallic DASs SACs, bonded DASs SACs, non-bonded DASs SACs, bridged DASs SACs, asymmetric DASs SACs, metal and nonmetal combined DASs SACs and space separated DASs SACs. Based on the above classification, the general methods for the preparation of DASs SACs are comprehensively described, especially their structural characteristics are discussed in detail. Meanwhile, the in-depth assessments of DASs SACs for variety applications including electrocatalysis, thermocatalysis and photocatalysis are provided, as well as their unique catalytic mechanism are addressed. Moreover, the prospects and challenges for DASs SACs and related applications are highlighted. The authors believe the great expectations for DASs SACs, and this review will provide novel conceptual and methodological perspectives and exciting opportunities for further development and application of DASs SACs.

Fe3N Nanoparticle-Encapsulated N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes on Biomass-Derived Carbon Cloth as Self-Standing Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The design and fabrication of low-cost catalysts for highly efficient oxygen reduction are of paramount importance for various renewable energy-related technologies, such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we report the synthesis of Fe3N nanoparticle-encapsulated N-doped carbon nanotubes on the surface of a flexible biomass-derived carbon cloth (Fe3N@CNTs/CC) via a simple one-step carbonization process. Taking advantage of its unique structure, Fe3N@CNTs/CC was employed as a self-standing electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and possessed high activity as well as excellent long-term stability and methanol resistance in alkaline media. Remarkably, Fe3N@CNT/CC can directly play the role of both a gas diffusion layer and an electrocatalytic cathode in a zinc-air battery without additional means of catalyst loading, and it displays higher open-circuit voltage, power density, and specific capacity in comparison with a commercial Pt/C catalyst. This work is anticipated to inspire the design of cost-effective, easily prepared, and high-performance air electrodes for advanced electrochemical applications.

Superexchange-induced Pt-O-Ti3+ site on single photocatalyst for efficient H2 production with organics degradation in wastewater

Efficient photocatalytic H2 production from wastewater instead of pure water is a dual solution to the environmental and energy crisis, but due to the rapid recombination of photoinduced charge in the photocatalyst and inevitable electron depletion caused by organic pollutants, a significant challenge of dual-functional photocatalysis (simultaneous oxidative and reductive reactions) in single catalyst is designing spatial separation path for photogenerated charges at atomic level. Here, we designed a Pt-doped BaTiO3 single catalyst with oxygen vacancies (BTPOv) that features Pt-O-Ti3+ short charge separation site, which enables excellent H2 production performance (1519 μmol·g-1·h-1) while oxidizing moxifloxacin (k = 0.048 min-1), almost 43 and 98 times than that of pristine BaTiO3 (35 μmol·g-1·h-1 and k = 0.00049 min-1). The efficient charge separation path is demonstrated that the oxygen vacancies extract photoinduced charge from photocatalyst to catalytic surface, and the adjacent Ti3+ defects allow rapid migration of electrons to Pt atoms through the superexchange effect for H* adsorption and reduction, while the holes will be confined in Ti3+ defects for oxidation of moxifloxacin. Impressively, the BTPOv shows an exceptional atomic economy and potential for practical applications, a best H2 production TOF (370.4 h-1) among the recent reported dual-functional photocatalysts and exhibiting excellent H2 production activity in multiple types of wastewaters.

Tuning Electron Transfer in Atomic-Scale Pt-Supported Catalysts for the Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction

Developing efficient atomic-scale metal-supported catalysts is of great significance for energy conversion technologies. However, the precise modulation of electron transfer between the metal and supporter in atomic-scale metal-supported catalysts to further improve the catalytic activity is still a major challenge. Herein, we show tunable electron transfer between atomic-scale Pt and tungsten nitride/oxide supports (namely, Pt/WN and Pt/W₁₈O₄₉). Pt/WN with modest electron exchange and Pt/W₁₈O₄₉ with aggressive electron exchange exhibit notably different catalytic activities for the alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), in which Pt/WN shows a 5.7-fold enhancement in HOR intrinsic catalytic performance in comparison to Pt/W₁₈O₄₉. Additionally, the tunable electronic transfer at the interface of Pt/WN and Pt/W₁₈O₄₉, as proven by the theoretical calculation, resulted in the discrepancy of the adsorption free energy of the reaction intermediates, as well as catalytic activity, for the HOR process. Our work provides new insights into the design of advanced atomic-scale metal-supported catalysts for electrocatalysis.

Charge Redistribution of Co9S8/MoS2 Heterojunction Microsphere Enhances Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of transition metal sulfide heterojunctions are significantly increased when compared with that of a single component, but the mechanism behind the performance enhancement and the preparation of catalysts with specific morphologies still need to be explored. Here, we prepared a Co9S8/MoS2 heterojunction with microsphere morphology consisting of thin nanosheets using a facile two-step method. There is electron transfer between the Co9S8 and MoS2 of the heterojunction, thus realizing the redistribution of charge. After the formation of the heterojunction, the density of states near the Fermi surface increases, the d-band center of the transition metal moves downward, and the adsorption of both water molecules and hydrogen by the catalyst are optimized. As a result, the overpotential of Co9S8/MoS2 is superior to that of most relevant electrocatalysts reported in the literature. This work provides insight into the synergistic mechanisms of heterojunctions and their morphological regulation.
