Regulation of Quantum Wells Width Distribution in Quasi-2D Perovskite Films for High-Performance Photodetectors

Preferred Orientation and Phase Distribution of Quasi-2D Perovskite for Bifunctional Light-Emitting Photodetectors

In traditional optical wireless communication (OWC) systems, the simultaneous use of multiple sets of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and photodetectors (PDs) increases the system complexity and instability. Here we report bifunctional light-emitting photodetectors (LEPDs) fabricated with quasi-2D perovskite (F-PEA)2Cs4Pb5I11Br5 as light-emitting/detecting layers for efficient, miniaturized, and intelligent bidirectional OWC. By simply changing the solvent composition of the precursor solution and using antisolvent engineering, we manipulated the crystal orientation and phase distribution of (F-PEA)2Cs4Pb5I11Br5, realizing high irradiance (4.36 μW cm-2) and a -3 dB refresh rate (0.21 MHz) of electroluminescence in LED mode as well as low noise (below 1 pA Hz-1/2) and high responsivity (0.1 A W-1) in PD mode. The rapid and accurate OWC process was demonstrated through interaction of LEPDs. We also demonstrated the high-fidelity compression and digitization of high-resolution (256 × 256 pixels) color images using the four-step phase shift method to realize intelligent encrypted image OWC.

Interfacial Rivet to Fill Structural Defects: A Spacer Engineering Gift for 3D Solar Cells

The combination of 2D and 3D perovskites to passivate surfaces or interfaces with a high concentration of defects shows great promise for improving the efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Constructing high-quality perovskite film systems by precisely modulating 2D perovskites with good morphologies and growth sites on 3D perovskite films remains a formidable challenge due to the complexity of spacer-engineered surface reactions. In this study, phase-pure 2D (HA)2(MA)n-1PbnI3n+1 perovskites with a controlled number of layers (n) are separated on a large scale and exploited as interface rivets to optimize 3D perovskite films, resulting in tunable film structural defects and grain boundaries. The optimized PSCs system benefits from a reduction in non-radiative recombination, resulting in improved optical performance, higher mobility, and lower trap density. The corresponding device achieves a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of more than 25%, especially for voltage (VOC) and fill factor (FF). The quality and uniformity of the perovskite films are further confirmed using large-area devices with an active area of 14 cm2, which exhibits a PCE of more than 21.24%. The high-quality thin-film system based on the 2D perovskites presented herein provides a new perspective for improving the efficiency and stability of PSCs.

Phase Control and Singlet Energy Transfer Enabled by Trimethylamine Modified Boron Dipyrromethene for Stable CsPbBr3 Quantum Wells

The phase distribution and organic spacer cations play pivotal roles in determining the emission performance and stability of perovskite quantum wells (QWs). Here, we propose a universal molecular regulation strategy to tailor phase distribution and enhance the stability of CsPbBr3 QWs. The capability of sterically hindered ligands with formidable surface binding groups is underscored in directing CsPbBr3 growth and refining phase distribution. With trimethylamine modified boron dipyrromethene (BDP-TMA) ligand as a representative, the BDP-TMA driven can precisely control phase distribution and passivate defects of CsPbBr3 . Notably, BDP-TMA acts as a co-spacer organic entity in obtained BDP-TMA-CsPbBr3 , facilitating efficient singlet energy transfer and tailoring the luminescence to produce a distinctive bluish-white emission. The BDP-TMA-CsPbBr3 demonstrates significant phase stability under water exposure, light irradiation, and moderate temperature. Interestingly, BDP-TMA-CsPbBr3 exhibits the thermally-induced dynamic fluorescence control at elevated temperatures, which can be achieved feasible for advanced information encryption. This discovery paves the way for the exploration of perovskite QWs in applications like temperature sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and other advanced optical smart technologies.

Large-n quasi-phase-pure two-dimensional halide perovskite: A toolbox from materials to devices

Despite their excellent environmental stability, low defect density, and high carrier mobility, large-n quasi-two-dimensional halide perovskites (quasi-2DHPs) feature a limited application scope because of the formation of self-assembled multiple quantum wells (QWs) due to the similar thermal stabilities of large-n phases. However, large-n quasi-phase-pure 2DHPs (quasi-PP-2DHPs) can solve this problem perfectly. This review discusses the structures, formation mechanisms, and photoelectronic and physical properties of quasi-PP-2DHPs, summarises the corresponding single crystals, thin films, and heterojunction preparation methods, and presents the related advances. Moreover, we focus on applications of large-n quasi-PP-2DHPs in solar cells, photodetectors, lasers, light-emitting diodes, and field-effect transistors, discuss the challenges and prospects of these emerging photoelectronic materials, and review the potential technological developments in this area.
