Green Fluorescent Carbon Dots with Critically Controlled Surface States: Make Silk Shine via Feeding Silkworms

Feeding silkworms with functional materials as additives to produce naturally modified silk is a facile, diverse, controllable, and environmentally friendly method with a low cost of time and investment. Among various additives, carbon dots (CDs) show unique advantages due to their excellent biocompatibility and fluorescence stability. Here, a new type of green fluorescent carbon dots (G-CDs) is synthesized with a high oil-water partition ratio of 147, a low isoelectric point of 5.16, an absolute quantum yield of 71%, and critically controlled surface states. After feeding with G-CDs, the silkworms weave light yellow cocoons whose green fluorescence is visible to the naked eye under UV light. The luminous silk is sewn onto the cloth to create striking patterns with beautiful fluorescence. Such G-CDs have no adverse effect on the survival rate and the life cycle of silkworms and enable their whole bodies to glow under UV light. Based on the strong fluorescence, chemical stability, and biological safety, G-CDs are found in the digestive tracts, silk glands, feces, cocoons, and even moth bodies. G-CDs accumulate in the posterior silk glands where fibroin protein is secreted, indicating its stronger combination with fibroin than sericin, which meets the requirements for practical applications.

Carbon Micro/Nano Machining toward Miniaturized Device: Structural Engineering, Large-Scale Fabrication, and Performance Optimization

With the rapid development of micro/nano machining, there is an elevated demand for high-performance microdevices with high reliability and low cost. Due to their outstanding electrochemical, optical, electrical, and mechanical performance, carbon materials are extensively utilized in constructing microdevices for energy storage, sensing, and optoelectronics. Carbon micro/nano machining is fundamental in carbon-based intelligent microelectronics, multifunctional integrated microsystems, high-reliability portable/wearable consumer electronics, and portable medical diagnostic systems. Despite numerous reviews on carbon materials, a comprehensive overview is lacking that systematically encapsulates the development of high-performance microdevices based on carbon micro/nano structures, from structural design to manufacturing strategies and specific applications. This review focuses on the latest progress in carbon micro/nano machining toward miniaturized device, including structural engineering, large-scale fabrication, and performance optimization. Especially, the review targets an in-depth evaluation of carbon-based micro energy storage devices, microsensors, microactuators, miniaturized photoresponsive and electromagnetic interference shielding devices. Moreover, it highlights the challenges and opportunities in the large-scale manufacturing of carbon-based microdevices, aiming to spark further exciting research directions and application prospectives.

Interfacial Engineering of Fluorescent Carbon Dots with Metal Oxides for Real-Time Visualization of Oxygen Vacancy Dynamics

Oxygen vacancy (Vo), as one of the most common surface defects, significantly influence the physiochemical properties of metal oxides. However, it remains a challenge for existing techniques to visualize the evolution of Vo during redox process due to its heterogeneous distribution, small size, and dynamic nature. Herein, the real-time monitoring of such microscopic interfacial events is reported by advantage of the high-contrast fluorescence response of carbon dots (H-CDs) to Vo. The green emissive H-CDs possess a unique disc-shaped structure and exceptional hydrophilicity, allowing their tight adhesion to the surfaces of Vo-rich MgO by simple mixing. Subsequently, a water involved interfacial reaction occurred between H-CDs and Vo, resulting in gradual quenching of the original green emission and simultaneously emergence of bright red fluorescence. Moreover, the spatiotemporal diffusion dynamics and reaction kinetics are investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy, revealing the time-dependent reorganization and structural heterogeneity at the interface. The finding provides a new toolbox for in situ imaging of Vo-triggered phenomena at a microscopic level, which will be helpful in promoting the rational design of oxide materials.

Comprehensive Overview of Controlled Fabrication of Multifunctional Fluorescent Carbon Quantum Dots and Exploring Applications

In recent years, carbon dots (CDs) have garnered increasing attention due to their simple preparation methods, versatile performances, and wide-ranging applications. CDs can manifest various optical, physical, and chemical properties including quantum yield (QY), emission wavelength (Em), solid-state fluorescence (SSF), room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), material-specific responsivity, pH sensitivity, anti-oxidation and oxidation, and biocompatibility. These properties can be effectively regulated through precise control of the CD preparation process, rendering them suitable for diverse applications. However, the lack of consideration given to the precise control of each feature of CDs during the preparation process poses a challenge in obtaining the requisite features for various applications. This paper is to analyze existing research and present novel concepts and ideas for creating CDs with different distinct features and applications. The synthesis methods of CDs are discussed in the first section, followed by a comprehensive overview of the important properties of CDs and the modification strategy. Subsequently, the application of CDs and their requisite properties are reviewed. Finally, the paper outlines the current challenges in controlling CDs properties and their applications, discusses potential solutions, and offers suggestions for future research.

Intermediate aminophenol enables hectogram-scale synthesis of highly bright red carbon quantum dots under ambient conditions

Carbon quantum dots (C-dots) have developed into potential nanomaterials for lighting, catalysis and bioimaging because of their excellent optical properties and good biocompatibility. However, it is still a challenge to produce efficient red emitting carbon quantum dots (R-C-dots) due to their obscure formation mechanism. This work offered a method to reveal the formation process from the precursor o-phenylenediamine (o-PDA) to R-C-dots. Different from traditional hydrothermal reactions, R-C-dots were synthesized at relatively low temperature and ambient pressure. The pre-oxidation intermediate aminophenol played an important role in the synthesis of R-C-dots, which further cross-linked and polymerized with o-PDA in an acid environment to form R-C-dots. The obtained R-C-dots had a photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 33.26% and excellent two-photon fluorescence properties. A white light-emitting diode (WLED) based on R-C-dots as the red phosphor exhibited standard white light CIE color coordinates of (0.33, 0.33) with a correlated color temperature of 5342 K and a high color rendering index (CRI) of 94.5. The obtained rendering index is the highest value among WLEDs with color coordinates of (0.33, 0.33) based on C-dots. This work provides a new perspective for the controllable large-scale synthesis of red C-dots.

Three-Dimensional Imaging of Bioinspired Lipidic Mesophases Using Multicolored Light-Emitting Carbon Nanodots

Recent progress in the design of carbon nanostructures exhibiting strong multiphoton-excited emission opens new pathways to explore the self-organization of lipids found in living organisms. Phospholipid-based lyotropic myelin figures (MFs) are promising materials as simplified models of biomembranes due to their structural resemblance to a multilamellar sheath insulating the axon. This study demonstrates the possibility of selective labeling of MFs by strongly emitting multicolor phloroglucinol-derived carbon nanodots (PG CNDs). Such dopants are efficiently excited by visible and near-infrared light; therefore, one- and two-photon fluorescence microscopies are incorporated to gain 3D insights into the MFs. Combining nondestructive fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy techniques along with polarized light microscopy gives details on the stability and morphology of lipidic mesophases. Our findings suggest that PG CNDs can be a viable and simple alternative to conventional fluorescent lipid stains to image biologically relevant phospholipid-based structures.

Solid-State Red Carbon Dots Based on Biomass Furan Derivatives

In the preparation of carbon dots (CDs), precursors are crucial, and abundant precursors endow CDs with various structures and fluorescence characteristics. Furan (FU) and its derivatives are considered excellent carbonization materials due to their π conjugated structures and active functional groups, such as hydroxyl and aldehyde groups. Herein, we prepare FU-derivative-based CDs by a solvothermal method and investigate the influences of the precursor structure on the fluorescence characteristics. Surprisingly, CDs prepared from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with both aldehyde and hydroxyl groups exhibit red-shifted fluorescence characteristics in the solid state. We postulate that this solid-state fluorescence characteristic is due to the enhancement of supramolecular cross-linking fluorescence between CDs. The unique precursor structure leads to carboxyl groups on the surface of HMF-CDs that are conducive to the hydrogen bond formation. As the concentration of CDs increases, the hydrogen bonding effect increases, leading to a red-shift in the fluorescence wavelength. Therefore, basically full-color CDs/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) phosphor-based light-emitting diodes can be achieved by controlling the degree of supramolecular cross-linking of CDs in PVA. This research provides a new approach for the preparation of solid-state luminescent CDs.

Crystallization-induced emission from F-doped carbon dots

Herein, F-doped CDs with bright red SSF were synthesized by a solvothermal method using trifluoroethanol as the solvent and m-hydroxybenzaldehyde as the carbon source. Strong F-F interactions are vital for inducing crystallization, and solid luminescence is achieved by blocking the nonradiative energy dissipation pathways of crystalline organizations.

Photoswitching in a Liquid Crystalline Pt(II) Coordination Complex

Photoswitching of photoluminescence has sparked tremendous research interests for super-resolution imaging, high-security-level anti-counterfeiting, and other high-tech applications. However, the excitation of photoluminescence is usually ready to trigger the photoswitching process, making the photoluminescence readout unreliable. Herein, we report a new photoswitch by the marriage of spiropyran with platinum(II) coordination complex. Viable photoluminescence can be achieved upon excitation by 480 nm visible light while the photoswitching can be easily triggered by 365 nm UV light. The feasible photoswitching may be benefited from the formed liquid crystalline (LC) phase of the designed photoswitch as a crystalline spiropyran is normally unable to implement photoswitching. Compared to the counterparts, this LC photoswitch can show distinct and reliable apparent colors and emission colors before and after photoswitching, which may promise the utility in high-security-level anti-counterfeiting and other advanced information technologies.
