Structural Understanding for High-Voltage Stabilization of Lithium Cobalt Oxide

Revealing the Thermodynamic Mechanism of Phase Transition Induced by Activation Polarization in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Enhancing the phase transition reversibility of electrode materials is an effective strategy to alleviate capacity degradation in the cycling of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, a comprehensive understanding of phase transitions under microscopic electrode dynamics is still lacking. In this paper, the activation polarization is quantified as the potential difference between the applied potential (Uabs) and the zero-charge potential (ZCP) of electrode materials. The polarization potential difference facilitates the phase transition by driving Li-ion adsorption and supplying an electron-rich environment. A novel thermodynamic phase diagram is constructed to characterize the phase transition of the example MoS2 under various Li-ion concentrations and operating voltages using the grand canonic fixed-potential method (FPM). At thermodynamic quasi-equilibrium, the ZCP is close to the Uabs, and thus is used to form the discharge curve in the phase diagram. The voltage plateau is observed within the phase transition region in the simulation, which will disappear as the phase transition reversibility is impaired. The obtained discharge curve and phase transition concentration both closely match the experimental results. Overall, the study provides a theoretical understanding of how polarization affects phase evolution in electrode dynamics, which may provide a guideline to improve battery safety and cycle life.

Cobalt substitution-induced π-donation in NiMoO4 for enhanced electrochemical charge storage

NiMoO4 (NM) has garnered significant attention due to its rich d-orbital electronic structure and multivalent electroactive cations. However, the inherently low electrical conductivity of NM limits its reaction kinetics. Herein, cobalt-substituted NM (Co-NM) nanorods were prepared via a hydrothermal reaction followed by subsequent thermal treatment. The incorporation of Ni-O-Co configurations stimulates an enhanced π-donation effect of the Co-O bond, facilitating the hybridization between the O 2p and Co 3d orbitals and thereby boosting charge transfer kinetics during electrochemical processes. The optimized 10 %Co-NM nanorods demonstrated a remarkable specific capacity of 557.8 C·g-1 at 1 A·g-1. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor constructed with 10 %Co-NM as the positive electrode and FeOOH as the negative electrode, achieved a significant energy density of 63.58 Wh·kg-1 at a power density of 805.38 W·kg-1. Thus, our work provides new insights into the rational design of stable bridging configurations to significantly improve electrochemical reaction kinetics.

Scalable Precise Nanofilm Coating and Gradient Al Doping Enable Stable Battery Cycling of LiCoO2 at 4.7 V

The quest for smart electronics with higher energy densities has intensified the development of high-voltage LiCoO2 (LCO). Despite their potential, LCO materials operating at 4.7 V faces critical challenges, including interface degradation and structural collapse. Herein, we propose a collective surface architecture through precise nanofilm coating and doping that combines an ultra-thin LiAlO2 coating layer and gradient doping of Al. This architecture not only mitigates side reactions, but also improves the Li+ migration kinetics on the LCO surface. Meanwhile, gradient doping of Al inhibited the severe lattice distortion caused by the irreversible phase transition of O3-H1-3-O1, thereby enhanced the electrochemical stability of LCO during 4.7 V cycling. DFT calculations further revealed that our approach significantly boosts the electronic conductivity. As a result, the modified LCO exhibited an outstanding reversible capacity of 230 mAh g-1 at 4.7 V, which is approximately 28 % higher than the conventional capacity at 4.5 V. To demonstrate their practical application, our cathode structure shows improved stability in full pouch cell configuration under high operating voltage. LCO exhibited an excellent cycling stability, retaining 82.33 % after 1000 cycles at 4.5 V. This multifunctional surface modification strategy offers a viable pathway for the practical application of LCO materials, setting a new standard for the development of high-energy-density and long-lasting electrode materials.

Toward Circular Energy: Exploring Direct Regeneration for Lithium-Ion Battery Sustainability

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are rapidly developing into attractive energy storage technologies. As LIBs gradually enter retirement, their sustainability is starting to come into focus. The utilization of recycled spent LIBs as raw materials for battery manufacturing is imperative for resource and environmental sustainability. The sustainability of spent LIBs depends on the recycling process, whereby the cycling of battery materials must be maximized while minimizing waste emissions and energy consumption. Although LIB recycling technologies (hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy) have been commercialized on a large scale, they have unavoidable limitations. They are incompatible with circular economy principles because they require toxic chemicals, emit hazardous substances, and consume large amounts of energy. The direct regeneration of degraded electrode materials from spent LIBs is a viable alternative to traditional recycling technologies and is a nondestructive repair technology. Furthermore, direct regeneration offers advantages such as maximization of the value of recycled electrode materials, use of sustainable, nontoxic reagents, high potential profitability, and significant application potential. Therefore, this review aims to investigate the state-of-the-art direct LIB regeneration technologies that can be extended to large-scale applications.

Mechanochemically Robust LiCoO2 with Ultrahigh Capacity and Prolonged Cyclability

Pushing intercalation-type cathode materials to their theoretical capacity often suffers from fragile Li-deficient frameworks and severe lattice strain, leading to mechanical failure issues within the crystal structure and fast capacity fading. This is particularly pronounced in layered oxide cathodes because the intrinsic nature of their structures is susceptible to structural degradation with excessive Li extraction, which remains unsolved yet despite attempts involving elemental doping and surface coating strategies. Herein, a mechanochemical strengthening strategy is developed through a gradient disordering structure to address these challenges and push the LiCoO2 (LCO) layered cathode approaching the capacity limit (256 mAh g-1, up to 93% of Li utilization). This innovative approach also demonstrates exceptional cyclability and rate capability, as validated in practical Ah-level pouch full cells, surpassing the current performance benchmarks. Comprehensive characterizations with multiscale X-ray, electron diffraction, and imaging techniques unveil that the gradient disordering structure notably diminishes the anisotropic lattice strain and exhibits high fatigue resistance, even under extreme delithiation states and harsh operating voltages. Consequently, this designed LCO cathode impedes the growth and propagation of particle cracks, and mitigates irreversible phase transitions. This work sheds light on promising directions toward next-generation high-energy-density battery materials through structural chemistry design.

Alleviating Structure Collapse of Polycrystalline LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 via Surface Co Enrichment

The structure collapse issues have long restricted the application of polycrystalline LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (NCM) at high voltages beyond 4.4 V vs Li/Li+. Herein, for LiNi0.55Co0.12Mn0.33O2 (P-NCM), rapid surface degradation is observed upon the first charge, along with serious particle fragmentation upon repeated cycles. To alleviate these issues, a surface Co enrichment strategy is proposed [i.e., Co-enriched NCM (C-NCM)], which promotes the in situ formation of a robust surface rock-salt (RS) layer upon charge, serving as a highly stable interface for effective Li+ migration. Benefiting from this stabilized surface RS layer, Li+ extraction occurs mainly through this surface RS layer, rather than along the grain boundaries (GBs), thus reducing the risk of GBs' cracking and even particle fragmentation upon cycles. Besides, O loss and TM (TM = Ni, Co, and Mn) dissolution are also effectively reduced with fewer side reactions. The C-NCM/graphite cell presents a highly reversible capacity of 205.1 mA h g-1 at 0.2 C and a high capacity retention of 86% after 500 cycles at 1 C (1 C = 200 mA g-1), which is among the best reported cell performances. This work provides a different path for alleviating particle fragmentation of NCM cathodes.

Stabilization of LiCoO2 Cathodes in High Voltage Lithium Metal Batteries Through 2-(Trifluoromethyl)Benzamide (2-TFMBA) Electrolyte Additives

Increasing the charging cutoff voltage of LiCoO2 to 4.6 V is significant for enhancing battery density. However, the practical application of Li‖LiCoO2 batteries with a 4.6 V cutoff voltage faces significant impediments due to the detrimental changes under high voltage. This study presents a novel bifunctional electrolyte additive, 2-(trifluoromethyl)benzamide (2-TFMBA), which is employed to establish a stable and dense cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI). Characterization results reveal that an optimized CEI is achieved through the synergistic effects of the amide groups and trifluoromethyl groups within 2-TFMBA. The resulting CEI not only enhances the structural stability of LiCoO2 but also serves as a high-speed lithium-ion conduction channel, which expedites the insertion and extraction of lithium ions. The Li‖LiCoO2 batteries with 0.5 wt% 2-TFMBA achieves an 84.7% capacity retention rate after enduring 300 cycles at a current rate of 1 C, under a cut-off voltage of 4.6 V. This study provides valuable strategic insights into the stabilization of cathode materials in high-voltage batteries.

Ultrathin Titanium Dioxide Coating Enables High-Rate and Long-Life Lithium Cobalt Oxide

Lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) has been widely used as a leading cathode material for lithium-ion batteries in consumer electronics. However, unstable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and undesired phase transitions during fast Li+ diffusivity always incur an inferior stability of the high-voltage LCO (HV-LCO). Here, an ultra-thin amorphous titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating layer engineered on LCO by an atomic layer deposition (ALD) strategy is demonstrated to improve the high-rate and long-cycling properties of the HV-LCO cathode. Benefitting from the uniform TiO2 protective layer, the Li+ storage properties of the modified LCO obtained after 50 ALD cycles (LCO-ALD50) are significantly improved. The results show that the average Li+ diffusion coefficient is nearly tripled with a high-rate capability of 125 mAh g-1 at 5C. An improved cycling stability with a high-capacity retention (86.7%) after 300 cycles at 1C is also achieved, far outperforming the bare LCO (37.9%). The in situ XRD and ex situ XPS results demonstrate that the dense and stable CEI induced by the surface TiO2 coating layer buffers heterogenous lithium flux insertion during cycling and prevents electrolyte, which contributes to the excellent cycling stability of LCO-ALD50. This work reveals the mechanism of surface protection by transition metal oxides coating and facilitates the development of long-life HV-LCO electrodes.

Regenerated Ni-Doped LiCoO2 from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries as a Stable Cathode at 4.5 V

In the context of the increasing number of spent lithium-ion batteries, it is urgent to explore cathode regeneration and upcycling solutions to reduce environmental pollution, promote resource reuse, and meet the demand for high-energy cathode materials. Here, a closed-loop recycling method is introduced, which not only reclaims cobalt and lithium elements from spent lithium-ion batteries but also converts them into high-voltage LiCoO2 (LCO) materials. This approach involved pretreatment, chlorination roasting, water leaching, and ion doping to regenerate nickel-doped LCO (Ni-RLCO) materials. The doping of nickel effectively enhances the electrochemical stability of the LCO cathode at 4.5 V. The Ni-RLCO cathode exhibited a high discharge specific capacity of 185.28 mAh/g at a rate of 0.5 C with a capacity retention of 86.3% after 50 cycles and excellent rate capacity of 156.21 mAh/g at 2 C. This work offers a approach in significance for upcycling spent LCO into high-energy-density batteries with long-term cycling stability under high voltage.

New Insight into Bulk Structural Degradation of High-Voltage LiCoO2 at 4.55 V

The aggravated mechanical and structural degradation of layered oxide cathode materials upon high-voltage charging invariably causes fast capacity fading, but the underlying degradation mechanisms remain elusive. Here we report a new type of mechanical degradation through the formation of a kink band in a Mg and Ti co-doped LiCoO2 cathode charged to 4.55 V (vs Li/Li+). The local stress accommodated by the kink band can impede crack propagation, improving the structural integrity in a highly delithiated state. Additionally, machine-learning-aided atomic-resolution imaging reveals that the formation of kink bands is often accompanied by the transformation from the O3 to O1 phase, which is energetically favorable as demonstrated by first-principles calculations. Our results provide new insights into the mechanical degradation mechanism of high-voltage LiCoO2 and the coupling between electrochemically triggered mechanical failures and structural transition, which may provide valuable guidance for enhancing the electrochemical performance of high-voltage layered oxide cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Eutectogel Electrolyte Constructs Robust Interfaces for High-Voltage Safe Lithium Metal Battery

Dramatic growth of lithium dendrite, structural deterioration of LiCoO2 (LCO) cathode at high voltages, and unstable electrode/electrolyte interfaces pose significant obstacles to the practical application of high-energy-density LCO||Li batteries. In this work, a novel eutectogel electrolyte is developed by confining the nonflammable eutectic electrolyte in a polymer matrix. The eutectogel electrolyte can construct a robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with inorganic-rich LiF and Li3N, contributing to a uniform Li deposition. Besides, the severe interface side reactions between LCO cathode and electrolyte can be retarded with an in situ formed protective layer. Correspondingly, Li||Li symmetrical cells achieve highly reversible Li plating/stripping over 1000 h. The LCO||Li full cell can maintain 72.5% capacity after 1500 cycles with a decay rate of only 0.018% per cycle at a high charging voltage of 4.45 V. Moreover, the well-designed eutectogel electrolyte can even enable the stable operation of LCO at an extremely high cutoff voltage of 4.6 V. This work introduces a promising avenue for the advancement of eutectogel electrolytes, the nonflammable nature and well-regulated interphase significantly push forward the future application of lithium metal batteries and high-voltage utilization of LCO cathode.

Direct Regeneration of Spent Lithium-Ion Battery Cathodes: From Theoretical Study to Production Practice

Direct regeneration method has been widely concerned by researchers in the field of battery recycling because of its advantages of in situ regeneration, short process and less pollutant emission. In this review, we firstly analyze the primary causes for the failure of three representative battery cathodes (lithium iron phosphate, layered lithium transition metal oxide and lithium cobalt oxide), targeting at illustrating their underlying regeneration mechanism and applicability. Efficient stripping of material from the collector to obtain pure cathode material has become a first challenge in recycling, for which we report several pretreatment methods currently available for subsequent regeneration processes. We review and discuss emphatically the research progress of five direct regeneration methods, including solid-state sintering, hydrothermal, eutectic molten salt, electrochemical and chemical lithiation methods. Finally, the application of direct regeneration technology in production practice is introduced, the problems exposed at the early stage of the industrialization of direct regeneration technology are revealed, and the prospect of future large-scale commercial production is proposed. It is hoped that this review will give readers a comprehensive and basic understanding of direct regeneration methods for used lithium-ion batteries and promote the industrial application of direct regeneration technology.

Evolution Path of Precursor-Induced High-Temperature Lithiation Reaction during the Synthesis of Lithium-Rich Cathode Materials

High-temperature lithiation is one of the crucial steps for the synthesis of Li- and Mn-rich layered metal oxide (LMLO) cathodes. A profound insight of the micromorphology and crystal structure evolution during calcination helps to realize the finely controlled preparation of final cathodes, finally achieving a desired electrochemical performance. In this work, two typical precursors (hydroxide and oxalate) were selected to prepare LMLO. It is found that the influence of the lithium source on reaction pathways is determined by the properties of precursors. In the case of hydroxide as a precursor, whatever lithium sources it is, the flake morphology of LMLO is inherited from hydroxide precursors. This is because the crystal structure of cathode products has a high similarity with its precursor in terms of the oxygen array arrangement, and the topological transformation occurs from hydroxide (P-3ml) to LMLOs (C/2m and R3m). Thus, the morphology and microstructure of LMLO cathodes could be well controlled only by tuning the properties of hydroxide precursors. Conversely, the decomposition of a lithium source has a great influence on the intermediate transformation when oxalate is used as the precursor. This is because a large amount of CO2 is released from the oxalate precursor after the decomposition reaction, resulting in drastic structural changes. At this time, the diffusion ability of the lithium source leads to the competition between the spinel phase and layered phase. Based on this point, the formation of a spinel intermediate phase can be reduced by accelerating the decomposition of the lithium source, contributing to the generation of a highly pure layered phase, thus exhibiting higher electrochemical performance. These insights provide an exciting cue to the rational selection and design of raw materials and lithium sources for the controlled synthesis of LMLO cathodes.
