Abstract
In order to elucidate the origins of the stable structures of dirhodium(II) tetrakis[N-phthaloyl-(S)-tert-leucinate] and the four derivatives with halogenated aromatic rings, the conformational stability and intramolecular interactions were investigated by DFT calculations. In all of these complexes, the conformation in which all ligands face in the same direction is the most stable. When adjacent ligands are in the same orientation, destabilization due to exchange repulsion is larger than that when they are in opposite orientations. However, this destabilizing effect is reversed by the sum of the stabilizing effects of the electronic and charge transfer interactions. The imide carbonyl group plays an important role in these stabilizing interactions. The negatively charged site and bond orbitals in the imide carbonyl group interact with the positively charged sites and bond orbitals in the aromatic ring, the carboxylate group, and the α-position of the carboxylate group in the adjacent ligands. In addition, the lone-pair orbitals of the halogen atoms contribute to conformational stabilization by interacting with the vacant orbitals in the adjacent ligands. However, the combinations of these charged sites or bond orbitals, which effectively contribute to the stabilization, are different for each complex.

Abstract
Trifluoromethyl-bearing 5-membered rings are prevalent in bioactive molecules, but modular approaches to these compounds by functionalization of robust C(sp3 )-H bonds in a direct and selective manner are extremely challenging. Herein we report the rhodium-catalyzed α-CF3 -α-alkyl carbene insertion into C(sp3 )-H bonds of a broad range of substrates to access 7 types of CF3 -bearing saturated 5-membered carbo- and heterocycles. The reaction is particularly effective for benzylic C-H insertion exerting good site-, diastereo- and enantiocontrol, and applicable to the synthesis of chiral CF3 analogues of bioactive molecules. Ruthenium α-CF3 -α-alkyl carbene complexes underwent stoichiometric reactions to give C-H insertion products, lending evidence for the involvement of metal α-CF3 -α-alkyl carbene species in the catalytic cycle. DFT calculations revealed that the π⋅⋅⋅π attraction and intra-carbene C-H⋅⋅⋅F hydrogen bond elucidate the origin of selectivity of the benzylic C-H insertion reactions.

Abstract
C-H functionalization has been emerging as a powerful method to establish carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Many efforts have been devoted to transition-metal-catalyzed direct transformations of C-H bonds. Metal carbenes generated in situ from transition-metal compounds and diazo or its equivalents are usually applied as the transient reactive intermediates to furnish a catalytic cycle for new C-C and C-X bond formation. Using this strategy compounds from unactivated simple alkanes to complex molecules can be further functionalized or transformed to multi-functionalized compounds. In this area, transition-metal-catalyzed carbene insertion to C-H bonds has been paid continuous attention. Diverse catalyst design strategies, synthetic methods, and potential applications have been developed. This critical review will summarize the advance in transition-metal-catalyzed carbene insertion to C-H bonds dated up to July 2021, by the categories of C-H bonds from aliphatic C(sp3)-H, aryl (aromatic) C(sp2)-H, heteroaryl (heteroaromatic) C(sp2)-H bonds, alkenyl C(sp2)-H, and alkynyl C(sp)-H, as well as asymmetric carbene insertion to C-H bonds, and more coverage will be given to the recent work. Due to the rapid development of the C-H functionalization area, future directions in this topic are also discussed. This review will give the authors an overview of carbene insertion chemistry in C-H functionalization with focus on the catalytic systems and synthetic applications in C-C bond formation.

Abstract
A facile approach is reported for the preparation of dirhodium coordination polymers [Rh2 (L1)2 ]n (Rh2 -L1) and [Rh2 (L2)2 ]n (Rh2 -L2; L1=N,N'-(pyromellitoyl)-bis-L-phenylalanine diacid anion, L2=bis-N,N'-(L-phenylalanyl) naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylate diimide) from chiral dicarboxylic acids by ligand exchange. Multiple techniques including FTIR, XPS, and 1 H→13 C CP MAS NMR spectroscopy reveal the formation of the coordination polymers. 19 F MAS NMR was utilized to investigate the remaining TFA groups in the obtained coordination polymers, and demonstrated near-quantitative ligand exchange. DR-UV-vis and XPS confirm the oxidation state of the Rh center and that the Rh-single bond in the dirhodium node is maintained in the synthesis of Rh2 -L1 and Rh2 -L2. Both coordination polymers exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the asymmetric cyclopropanation reaction between styrene and diazooxindole. The catalysts can be easily recycled and reused without significant reduction in their catalytic efficiency.

Abstract
Amino acids and peptides with bulky side chains are of significant importance in organic synthesis and modern medicinal chemistry. The efficient synthesis of these molecules with full enantiocontrol and high diversity remains challenging. Herein we report a Pd-catalyzed ligand-enabled γ-C(sp3)-H arylation of tert-leucine and its derived peptides without using an external directing group (DG) via a less favored six-membered palladacycle. Structurally diverse bulky side chain amino acids and peptides were accessed in a step-economic fashion and the reaction could be conducted on a gram scale with retention of chirality. The resulting amino acids can be used as chiral ligands in Co(iii)-catalyzed enantioselective C(sp3)-H amidation. It is worth noting that the weakly coordinating carboxylate DG outcompetes the strongly coordinating bidentate DG of the peptide backbone, providing the products of γ-C(sp3)-H arylation of Tle residue exclusively. This protocol represents the first example of late stage C(sp3)-H functionalization of peptides using a weakly coordinating directing group.

Abstract
A novel approach to the design of dirhodium(II) tetracarboxylates derived from (S)-amino acid ligands is reported. The approach is founded on tailoring the steric influences of the overall catalyst structure by reducing the local symmetry of the ligand's N-heterocyclic tether. The application of the new approach has led to the uncovering of [Rh2 (S-tert PTTL)4 ] as a new member of the dirhodium(II) family with extraordinary selectivity in cyclopropanation reactions. The stereoselectivity of [Rh2 (S-tert PTTL)4 ] was found to be comparable to that of [Rh2 (S-PTAD)4 ] (up to >99 % ee), with the extra benefit of being more synthetically accessible. Correlations based on X-ray structures to justify the observed enantioinduction are also discussed.

Abstract
Rh-carbenes derived from α-diazocarbonyl compounds have found broad utility across a remarkable range of reactivity, including cyclopropanation, cyclopropenation, C-H insertions, heteroatom-hydrogen insertions, and ylide forming reactions. However, in contrast to α-aryl or α-vinyl-α-diazocarbonyl compounds, the utility of α-alkyl-α-diazocarbonyl compounds had been moderated by the propensity of such compounds to undergo intramolecular β-hydride migration to give alkene products. Especially challenging had been intermolecular reactions involving α-alkyl-α-diazocarbonyl compounds. This Account discusses the historical context and prior limitations of Rh-catalyzed reactions involving α-alkyl-α-diazocarbonyl compounds. Early studies demonstrated that ligand and temperature effects could influence chemoselectivity over β-hydride migration. However, effects were modest and conflicting conclusions had been drawn about the influence of sterically demanding ligands on β-hydride migration. More recent advances have led to a more detailed understanding of the reaction conditions that can promote intermolecular reactivity in preference to β-hydride migration. In particular, the use of bulky carboxylate ligands and low reaction temperatures have been key to enabling intermolecular cyclopropenation, cyclopropanation, carbonyl ylide formation/dipolar cycloaddition, indole C-H functionalization, and intramolecular bicyclobutanation with high chemoselectivity over β-hydride migration. Cyclic α-diazocarbonyl compounds have been shown to be particularly resilient toward β-hydride migration and are the first class of compounds that can engage in intermolecular reactivity in the presence of tertiary β-hydrogens. DFT calculations were used to propose that for cyclic α-diazocarbonyl compounds, ring constraints relieve steric interaction for intermolecular reactions and thereby accelerate the rate of intermolecular reactivity relative to intramolecular β-hydride migration. Enantioselective reactions of α-alkyl-α-diazocarbonyl compounds have been developed using bimetallic N-imido-tert-leucinate-derived complexes. The most effective complexes were found by computation and X-ray crystallography to adopt a "chiral crown" conformation in which all of the imido groups are presented on one face of the paddlewheel complex in a chiral arrangement. Insight from computational studies guided the design and synthesis of a mixed ligand paddlewheel complex, Rh2(S-PTTL)3TPA, the structure of which bears similarity to the chiral crown complex Rh2(S-PTTL)4. Rh2(S-PTTL)3TPA engages substrate classes (aliphatic alkynes, silylacetylenes, α-olefins) that are especially challenging in intermolecular reactions of α-alkyl-α-diazoesters and catalyzes enantioselective cyclopropanation, cyclopropenation, and indole C-H functionalization with yields and enantioselectivities that are comparable or superior to Rh2(S-PTTL)4. The work detailed in this Account describes progress toward enabling a more general utility for α-alkyl-α-diazo compounds in Rh-catalyzed carbene reactions. Further studies on ligand design and synthesis will continue to broaden the scope of their selective reactions.

Abstract
The rhodium-catalyzed reaction of 2-diazo-5-arylpent-4-enoates can be controlled by the appropriate choice of catalyst and catalyst loading to form either 2-arylbicyclo[1.1.0]butane carboxylates or cyclohexene derivatives. Both products are produced in a highly diastereoselective manner, with 2-arylbicyclo[1.1.0]butane carboxylates preferentially formed under low catalyst loadings. When the reaction is catalyzed by Rh(2)(R-BTPCP)(4), the 2-arylbicyclo[1.1.0]butane carboxylates are generated with high levels of asymmetric induction (70-94% ee).

Abstract
A highly asymmetric vinylogous addition of acyclic silyl enol ethers to siloxyvinyldiazoacetate is described. The reaction features a diastereoselective 1,4-siloxy group migration event. Products are obtained in up to 97% ee. When more sterically crowded silyl enol ethers are employed, an enantioselective formal [3+2] cycloaddition becomes the dominant reaction pathway. Control experiments reveal the (Z)-olefin geometry to be critical for high levels of enantiocontrol.

Abstract
Intermolecular Rh-catalyzed reactions of cyclic α-diazocarbonyl compounds with chemoselectivity over β-hydride elimination are described. These methods represent the first general intermolecular reactions of Rh-carbenoids that are selective over tertiary β-C-H bond migration. Successful transformations include cyclopropanation, cyclopropenation, and various X-H insertion reactions with a broad scope of substrates. We propose that the intermolecular approach of substrates to carbenes from acyclic diazo precursors may be relatively slow due to a steric interaction with the ester function, which is perpendicular to the π-system of the carbene. For carbenes derived from five- and six-membered cyclic α-diazocarbonyls, it is proposed that the carbene is constrained to be more conjugated with the carbonyl, thereby relieving the steric interaction for intermolecular reactions, and accelerating the rate of intermolecular reactivity relative to intramolecular β-hydride migration. However, attempts to use α-diazo-β-ethylcaprolactone in intermolecular cyclopropanation with styrene were unsuccessful. It is proposed that the conformational flexibility of the seven-membered ring allows the carbonyl to be oriented perpendicular to Rh-carbene. The significant intermolecular interaction between the carbonyl and approaching substrate is in agreement with the poor ability of α-diazo-β-ethylcaprolactone to participate in intermolecular cyclopropanation reactions. DFT calculations provide support for the mechanistic proposals that are described.

Abstract
Herein we report the synthesis of the mixed ligand paddlewheel complex dirhodium(II) tris[N-phthaloyl-(S)-tert-leucinate] triphenylacetate, Rh(2)(S-PTTL)(3)TPA, the structure of which bears similarity to the chiral crown complex Rh(2)(S-PTTL)(4). Rh(2)(S-PTTL)(3)TPA engages substrate classes (aliphatic alkynes, silylacetylenes, α-olefins) that are especially challenging in intermolecular reactions of α-alkyl-α-diazoesters, and catalyzes enantioselective cyclopropanation, cyclopropenation, and indole C-H functionalization with yields and enantioselectivities that are comparable or superior to Rh(2)(S-PTTL)(4). Mixing ligands on paddlewheel complexes offers a versatile handle for diversifying catalyst structure and reactivity. The results described herein illustrate how mixed ligand catalysts can create new opportunities for the optimization of catalytic asymmetric processes.
