Abstract
We have achieved a divergent access to seven/five-membered rings based on a [1,6]-hydride shift/cyclization process from benzylidenemalonate with an o-alkoxymethyl group. Whereas Yb(OTf)3 afforded benzoxepines (with a seven-membered ring) selectively, indanes (with a five-membered ring) were the main products when Sc(OTf)3 was employed.

Abstract
AbstractDirectly accessible 8-substituted tetrahydroquinolines undergo 1,5-hydride-shift-triggered cyclization to provide difficult to access julolidine derivatives in yields of 21–98% under scandium(III) triflate catalysis. Additionally, the scope of the reaction, several follow-up transformations and a remarkable side process discovered during optimization of the conditions are highlighted.

Abstract
The borane-catalyzed synthesis of dihydroquinoline-4-ones is developed. The amino-substituted chalcones undergo a 1,7-hydride shift upon Lewis acid activation to form a zwitterionic iminium enolate, which collapses to the dihydroquinoline-4-one scaffold. The reaction proceeds in high yields (75-99%) with an excellent diastereoselectivity of up to >99:1 (cis:trans). The reaction mechanism is investigated by kinetic, isotope labeling, and computational experiments.

Abstract
We report herein a rapid access to 3-indolyl-1-trifluoromethyl-isobenzofurans via a [1,4]-hydride shift/cyclizatin/intermolecular nucleophilic addition reaction sequence. In this process, a Lewis acid promoted internal redox reaction ([1,4]-hydride shift/cyclization) followed by a Brønsted acid promoted intermolecular reaction (generation of cyclic oxonium cation/intermolecular Friedel-Crafts reaction) occurred to give various 3-indolyl-1-trifluoromethyl-isobenzofurans in good chemical yields.

Abstract
The total synthesis of representative members of the schizozygine alkaloids, (+)-vallesamidine and (+)-14,15-dehydrostrempeliopine, were completed from a late-stage divergent intermediate. The synthesis took advantage of efficient nitro-group reactions with the A/B/C ring skeleton constructed concisely on a gram scale through an asymmetric Michael addition, nitro-Mannich/lactamisation, Tsuji-Trost allylation, and intramolecular C-N coupling reaction. Other key features of the synthesis are a novel [1,4] hydride transfer/Mannich-type cyclisation to build ring E and a diastereoselective ring-closing metathesis reaction to construct ring D. This approach gave access to a late-stage C14,C15 alkene divergent intermediate that could be simply transformed into (+)-vallesamidine, (+)-14,15-dehydrostrempeliopine, and potentially other schizozygine alkaloids and unnatural derivatives.

Abstract
A novel skeletal rearrangement involving a [1,5]-alkylthio group transfer/cyclization sequence is described. Treatment of benzylidene malonates having a thioketal moiety at the homobenzyl position with a catalytic amount of Sc(OTf)3 afforded alkylthio group rearranged adducts in good chemical yields. Detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism revealed that an intramolecular conjugate addition/ring opening sequence (not through-space transfer) is the key to achieving this reaction.

Abstract
6-Phenylfulvenes bearing (1,3-dioxolan or dioxan)-2-yl substituents at ortho position convert into mixtures of 4- and 9-(hydroxy)alkoxy-substituted benz[f]indenes as result of cascade processes initiated by a thermally activated hydrogen shift. Structurally related fulvenes with non-cyclic acetalic units afforded mixtures of 4- and 9-alkoxybenz[f]indenes under similar thermal conditions. Mechanistic paths promoted by an initial [1,4]-, [1,5]-, [1,7]- or [1,9]-H shift are conceivable for explaining these conversions. Deuterium labelling experiments exclude the [1,4]-hydride shift as the first step. A computational study scrutinized the reaction channels of these tandem conversions starting by [1,5]-, [1,7]- and [1,9]-H shifts, revealing that this first step is the rate-determining one and that the [1,9]-H shift is the one with the lowest energy barrier.

Abstract
A detailed mechanism of N-alkylpyrrole formation from 3-pyrroline and 2-phenylpropanal in the presence of a Brønsted acid catalyst was investigated in depth using the MP2 and DFT theories. The two mechanisms proposed earlier in recent literatures for this internal redox process were evaluated and were found not to account perfectly for the transition state and the energetic barrier of its formation. Based on the present calculations, a new mechanism was put forth.
