Abstract
In recent years, visible-light-induced organic transformations have taken a central role driving forward the progress of modern organic synthesis. These processes typically involve the transient generation of highly reactive radical intermediates, facilitating a diverse array of chemical reactions. Despite the abundance of synthetic strategies enabling the access of aryl and alkyl-centered radicals, the exploitation of photochemistry to generate highly reactive alkenyl radicals has remained notably underdeveloped. In this review, we present recent advancements in visible-light-induced transformations that proceed through the generation of alkenyl radicals from alkenyl-containing precursors, predominantly alkenyl halides, showcasing their application in various organic transformations.

Abstract
A divergent diazo approach toward alkyl 5/4-hydroxy-3H-benzo[e]indole-4/5-carboxylates has been developed. The reaction of 1,3-diketones with alkyl 2-diazo-3-oxo-3-(2H-azirin-2-yl)propanoates catalyzed by Co(acac)3 or Ni(acac)2 gives various alkyl 3-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-2-diazo-3-oxopropanoate in good yields. The latter undergo Wolff rearrangement followed by the 6π-cyclization of transient ketene to form alkyl 5-hydroxy-3H-benzo[e]indole-4-carboxylates bearing various substituents in positions 1, 2, 7, and 8, as well as derivatives of methyl 4-hydroxy-6H-thieno[2,3-e]indole-5-carboxylates and methyl 5-hydroxy-7H-benzo[c]carbazole-6-carboxylate under thermolysis or Rh2(OAc)4 catalysis. Isomeric benzoindoles, alkyl 4-hydroxy-3H-benzo[e]indole-5-carboxylates, have been prepared by Boc-protection of the pyrrole nitrogen of alkyl 3-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-2-diazo-3-oxopropanoates followed by an intramolecular formal carbene insertion into the aromatic C-H bond catalyzed by Cu(OTf)2. The hydroxyl group of alkyl 5/4-hydroxy-3H-benzo[e]indole-4/5-carboxylates, through the formation of the corresponding triflates, allows the introduction of various substituents into the 5/4 position of benzo[e]indoles using the cross-coupling reaction and even form a new heterocyclic backbone, benzo[k]pyrrolo[2,3-i]phenanthridine, via a tandem Suzuki reaction/nucleophilic acyl substitution.

Abstract
The fields of C-H functionalization and photoredox catalysis have garnered enormous interest and utility in the past several decades. Many different scientific disciplines have relied on C-H functionalization and photoredox strategies including natural product synthesis, drug discovery, radiolabeling, bioconjugation, materials, and fine chemical synthesis. In this Review, we highlight the use of photoredox catalysis in C-H functionalization reactions. We separate the review into inorganic/organometallic photoredox catalysts and organic-based photoredox catalytic systems. Further subdivision by reaction class─either sp2 or sp3 C-H functionalization─lends perspective and tactical strategies for use of these methods in synthetic applications.

Abstract
ConspectusOver the past decade, photoredox catalysis has blossomed as a powerful methodology because of its wide applicability in sustainable free-radical-mediated processes, in which light is used as a cleaner energy source to alter the redox properties of organic molecules and to drive unique chemical transformations. Numerous examples of highly selective C-C and C-heteroatom bond formation processes have been achieved this way in an efficient and waste-reducing way. Therein, the activation of widely available organic halides via single-electron reduction has been broadly applied for organic synthesis. However, in comparison with alkyl and aryl halides, the analogous utilization of vinyl halides is less developed, most likely as a consequence of the highly unstable vinyl radicals generated as intermediates along with their strong tendency to abstract hydrogen atoms from a suitable source (e.g., the solvent), resulting in a synthetically less useful reduction.Nevertheless, during the last years, a number of photocatalytic processes involving vinyl halides have been developed, featuring the generation of vinyl radicals, diradicals, or radical cations as the key transient species. Moreover, photoredox processes in which a radical reacts with a vinyl halide or with an in situ-generated vinylmetal halide have been developed. Thus, identifying suitable conditions to generate and manipulate these reactive species has resulted in novel synthetic processes in a controllable manner. Moreover, in view of the great versatility of vinyl halides in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, their activation by visible light might provide an attractive alternative to such processes, especially when non-noble metals could be used as photoinitiators in the future. In this Account, we discuss the various strategies of photoredox processes involving vinyl halides, classifying the material into four categories: (a) formation of a vinyl radical upon receipt of an electron from the photocatalyst, (b) formation of a radical cation after donation of an electron to the photocatalyst, (c) energy transfer corresponding to diradical formation upon triplet-triplet sensitization, and (d) dual transition metal and photocatalysis employing vinyl halides as precursors. While in the first three approaches the activation of vinyl halides is part of the photochemical step, the fourth one involves the interaction of a photochemically generated radical with a vinylnickel(II) halide obtained in turn by the oxidative addition of nickel(0) to the vinyl halide. Therefore, we highlight these important developments for conceptual comparison to the direct activation of vinyl halides by light, but they are not covered in depth in this Account.

Abstract
A regiospecific synthesis of naphtho[2,1- b]benzofurans with a substituent at the C6 position was achieved via intramolecular 6-endo-dig electrophilic cyclization under acidic conditions to construct the central aromatic C ring. Screening of the synthesized compounds using a high-content imaging system enabled us to discover novel dual state emissive compounds 2{ 1,6}, 2{ 1,8}, and 2{ 4,3}, which are highly emissive with blue emission in their solid states as well as in solution states in most solvents. In addition, the compounds 2{ 4,3}, 2{ 4,12}, and 2{ 5,13} were found to be the most cell permeable in HeLa cells for live cell imaging with negligible phototoxicity.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed one-step annulative π-extension (APEX) reaction of indoles and pyrroles that allows rapid access to nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds is described. In the presence of palladium pivalate and silver carbonate, diverse indoles or pyrroles coupled with diiodobiaryls in a double direct C-H arylation manner to be transformed into the corresponding π-extended compounds in a single step. The newly developed catalytic system enables the use of various pyrroles and indoles as templates with a series of diiodobiaryls to provide structurally complicated and largely π-extended nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds that are otherwise difficult to synthesize.

Abstract
A novel mild, visible-light-induced palladium-catalyzed hydrogen atom translocation/atom-transfer radical cyclization (HAT/ATRC) cascade has been developed. This protocol involves a 1,5-HAT process of previously unknown hybrid vinyl palladium radical intermediates, thus leading to iodomethyl carbo- and heterocyclic structures.

Abstract

Utilizing
photoredox/nickel dual catalysis, diverse flavanones
have been synthesized by coupling novel 2-trifluoroboratochromanone
building blocks with aryl and heteroaryl bromide partners. The newly
reported trifluoroboratochromanones can be easily accessed
from the corresponding chromones on multigram scale. This represents
a general route for accessing natural and unnatural flavanones that
were previously formed through a synthetically more restrictive ring
closure route from chalcone precursors.

Abstract
Visible-light photoredox catalysis offers exciting opportunities to achieve challenging carbon-carbon bond formations under mild and ecologically benign conditions. Desired features of photoredox catalysts are photostability, long excited-state lifetimes, strong absorption in the visible region, and high reduction or oxidation potentials to achieve electron transfer to substrates, thus generating radicals that can undergo synthetic organic transformations. These requirements are met in a convincing way by Ru(II)(phenanthroline)3- and Ir(III)(phenylpyridine)3-type complexes and, as a low-cost alternative, by organic dyes that offer a metal-free catalyst but suffer in general from lower photostability. Cu(I)(phenanthroline)2 complexes have been recognized for more than 30 years as photoresponsive compounds with highly negative Cu(I)* → Cu(II) oxidation potentials, but nevertheless, they have not been widely considered as suitable photoredox catalysts, mainly because their excited lifetimes are shorter by a factor of 5 to 10 compared with Ru(II) and Ir(III) complexes, their absorption in the visible region is weak, and their low Cu(II) → Cu(I) reduction potentials might impede the closure of a catalytic cycle for a given process. Contrasting again with Ru(II)L3 and Ir(III)L3 complexes, Cu(I)L2 assemblies undergo more rapid ligand exchange in solution, thus potentially reducing the concentration of the photoactive species. Focusing on atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) reactions and related processes, we highlight recent developments that show the utility of Cu(I)(phenanthroline)2 complexes as photoredox catalysts, demonstrating that despite their short excited-state lifetimes and weak absorption such complexes are efficient at low catalyst loadings. Moreover, some of the inherent disadvantages stated above can even be turned to advantages: (1) the low Cu(II) → Cu(I) reduction potential might efficiently promote reactions via a radical chain pathway, and (2) the tendency for ligand exchange in Cu(I)L2 assemblies allows the efficient synthesis of heteroleptic Cu(I)LL' complexes to tune the steric and electronic properties and also might coordinate and thus activate substrates in the course of a reaction in addition to electron transfer. Moreover, new photoredox cycles have also been discovered beyond the visible-light-induced Cu(I)* → Cu(II) electron transfer that is arguably best known: examples of the Cu(II)* → Cu(I) and Cu(I)* → Cu(0) transitions have been realized, greatly broadening the potential for copper-based photoredox-catalyzed transformations. Finally, a number of organic transformations that are unique to Cu(I) photoredox catalysts have been discovered.

Abstract
Herein is a pertinent review of recent photochemical homolytic aromatic substitution (HAS) literature. Issues with using the reductant Bu3SnH in an oxidative process where the net loss of a hydrogen atom occurs is discussed. Nowadays more efficient light-induced chain reactions are used resulting in HAS becoming a synthetic mechanism of choice rivaling organometallic, transition-metal and electrophilic aromatic substitution protocols. The review includes aromatic substitution as part of a tandem or cascade reaction, Pschorr reaction, as well as HAS facilitated by ipso-substitution, and Smiles rearrangement. Recently visible-light photoredox catalysis, which is carried out at room temperature has become one of the most important means of aromatic substitution. The main photoredox catalysts used are polypyridine complexes of Ru(ii) and Ir(iii), although eosin Y is an alternative allowing metal-free HAS. Other radical initiator-free aromatic substitutions have used 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium ion and N,N-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)perylene-3,4,9,10-bis(dicarboximide) as the photoredox catalyst, UV-light, photoinduced electron-transfer, zwitterionic semiquinone radical anions, and Barton ester intermediates.

Abstract
A novel method for the mild photoredox-mediated tandem radical acylarylation and tandem acylation/semipinacol rearrangement has been developed. The synthesis of highly functionalized ketones bearing all-carbon α- or β-quaternary centers has been achieved using easily available symmetric aromatic carboxylic anhydrides as the acyl radical source. The method allows for a straightforward introduction of the keto functionality and concomitant construction of molecular complexity in a single operation.

Abstract
The boom in visible light photoredox catalysis (VLPC) research has demonstrated that this novel synthetic approach is here to stay. VLPC enables reactive radical intermediates to be catalytically generated at ambient temperature, a feat not generally allowed through traditional pyrolysis- or radical initiator-based methodologies. VLPC has vastly extended the range of substrates and reaction schemes that have been traditionally the domain of radical reactions. In this review the photophysics background of VLPC will be briefly discussed, followed by a report on recent inroads of VLPC into decarboxylative couplings and radical C-H functionalization of aromatic compounds. The bulk of the review will be dedicated to advances in synergistic catalysis involving VLPC, namely the combination of photoredox catalysis with organocatalysis, including β-functionalization of carbonyl groups, functionalization of weak aliphatic C-H bonds, and anti-Markovnikov hydrofunctionalization of alkenes; dual catalysis with gold or with nickel, photoredox catalysis as an oxidation promoter in transition metal catalysis, and acid-catalyzed enantioselective radical addition to π systems.

Abstract
A photocatalytic dearomatizative tandem [4+2] cyclization between N-(2-iodoethyl)indoles and a variety of alkenes leads to tri- and tetracyclic benzindolizidines with high diastereoselectivity and yield. The intermolecular annulation reaction is performed under visible-light irradiation and employs [Ir(ppy)3] or [Ir(dtbbpy)(ppy)2] PF6 as photocatalysts, in combination with tertiary amines as electron and hydrogen atom donors.
