Nanocrystalline ZnO: A Competent and Reusable Catalyst for the Preparation of Pharmacology Relevant Heterocycles in the Aqueous Medium

Nanoparticle catalyzed synthesis is a green and convenient method to achieve most of the chemical transformations in water or other green solvents. Nanoparticle ensures an easy isolation process of catalyst as well as products from the reaction mixture avoiding the hectic work up procedure. Zinc oxide is a biocompatible, environmentally benign and economically viable nanocatalyst with effectivity comparable to the other metal nanocatalyst employed in several reaction strategies. This review mainly focuses on the recent applications of zinc oxide in the synthesis of biologically important heterocyclic molecules under sustainable reaction conditions.

Application of zinc oxide in organic synthesis: Considering the achievable advantages of this nanocatalyst, presently several research groups are paying attention in anchoring zincoxide or its modified structure in several types of organic conversions e.g. multicomponent reactions, ligand-free coupling reactions, cycloaddition reaction, etc. The advantages and limitations of this nanocatalyst are also demonstrated. The present study aims to highlight the recent multifaceted applications of ZnO towards the synthesis of diverse heterocyclic motifs. Being a promising biocompatible nanoparticle, this catalyst has an important contribution in the fields of synthetic chemistry and medicinal chemistry.

Iron-Catalyzed Oxidative C-C Cross-Coupling Reaction of Tertiary Anilines with Hydroxyarenes by Using Air as Sole Oxidant

A mild procedure for the oxidative C-C cross-coupling of tertiary anilines with phenols is described which provides the products generally in high yields and with excellent selectivity. The reaction is catalyzed by the hexadecafluorinated iron-phthalocyanine complex FePcF16 in the presence of substoichiometric amounts of methanesulfonic acid and ambient air as sole oxidant.

Di(hetero)arylmethane is a unique structural motif for natural and synthetic functional molecules. To date, it remains challenging to functionalize the diaryl methyl sp3 carbon-hydrogen bond directly in an enantioselective manner. This is likely due to the relatively inert nature of the carbon-hydrogen bond and the difficult enantiofacial discrimination of two sterically similar aryl substituents. Here we disclose an N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed direct oxidative coupling of enals and di(hetero)arylmethanes. Our method allows for highly enantioselective transformation of diaryl methanes and quick access to benzimidazole fused lactams.

An effective method for the synthesis of diaryl- and triarylmethane derivatives through a Lewis acid catalyzed reduction of para-quinone methides and fuchsones, respectively, using the Hantzsch ester as a hydride surrogate is described.

Mechanically Induced Fe(III) Catalysis at Room Temperature: Solvent-Free Cross-Dehydrogenative Coupling of 3-Benzylic Indoles with Methylenes/Indoles

An Fe(III)-catalyzed solvent-free cross-dehydrogenative coupling of 3-benzylic indoles and compounds with acidic methylene groups has been achieved under high-speed ball-milling (HSBM) conditions at room temperature. The reactions afford desired 3-arylmethylindole derivatives in moderate to high yields within 21 min of grinding. Besides, both N-substituted and N-free indoles can take part in this mechanochemical reaction as efficient nucleophiles to give bisindoles with satisfactory results. Remarkably, this protocol displays the possibility to induce high activity when using iron catalysts under HSBM conditions.

Expedient Access to Unsymmetrical Diarylindolylmethanes through Palladium-Catalyzed Domino Electrophilic Cyclization-Extended Conjugate Addition Approach

A palladium-catalyzed domino process to access unsymmetrical diarylindolylmethanes has been developed through the annulation of o-alkynylanilines followed by 1,6-conjugate addition with p-quinone methides (p-QMs) under relatively mild conditions. The broad substrate scope of this methodology was demonstrated through the use of a wide range of substituted o-alkynylanilines and p-quinone methides, and in most cases, the unsymmetrical diarylindolylmethanes could be prepared in moderate to excellent yields. Notably, this method does not require any amino group protection. Moreover, 100% atom economy makes this transformation attractive from a green chemistry perspective.
