Abstract
Deoxygenation of epoxides into alkenes is one of the most important strategies in organic synthesis, biomass conversions, and medicinal chemistry. Although metal-catalyzed direct deoxygenation provides one of the most commonly encountered protocols for the conversion of epoxides to alkenes, the requirement of expensive catalysts and extra reductants has largely limited their universal applicability. Herein, we report an efficient PPh3-promoted metal-free strategy for deoxygenation of epoxides to generate alkene derivatives. The success of deoxyalkenylation of epoxides bearing a wide range of functional groups to give terminal, 1,1-disubstituted, and 1,2-disubstituted alkenes manifests the powerfulness and versatility of this strategy. Moreover, gram-scale synthesis with excellent yield and modification of biologically active molecules exemplifies its generality and practicability.

Abstract
Metal dioxo chemistry and its diverse reactivity are presented with an emphasis on the mechanisms of reactivity. Work from approximately the last decade is surveyed and organized by metal. In particular, the chemistry of cis-dioxo metal complexes is discussed at length. Reactions are grouped by generic type, including addition across a metal oxo bond, oxygen atom transfer, and radical atom transfer reactions. Attention is given to advances in deoxygenation chemistry, oxidation chemistry, and reductive transformations.

Abstract
In the presence of triphenylphosphine as a mild reductant, the use of catalytic amounts of Mo(CO)6 and an ortho-quinone ligand enables the intermolecular reductive coupling of aromatic aldehydes and the intramolecular coupling of aromatic ketones to produce functionalized alkenes. Diaryl- and diheteroaryl alkenes are synthesized with high (E)-selectivity and a tolerance toward bromide, iodide, and steric hindrance. Intramolecular coupling of dicarbonyl compounds under similar conditions affords mono- and disubstituted phenanthrenes.

Abstract
AbstractWe report a stereoinvertive deoxygenation of trans-3-arylglycidates as an alternative route to access thermodynamically less stable (Z)-cinnamate esters by using nickel triflate and triphenylphosphine. Broad functional-group tolerance was observed, with trans-3-arylglycidates containing methyl, methoxy, halo, or nitro groups affording the corresponding (Z)-cinnamate esters in high yields and with moderate to high E/Z ratios.

Abstract
Dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes have been applied as efficient, inexpensive and benign catalysts to deoxygenation reactions of a diverse number of compounds in the last two decades. Dioxomolybdenum complexes have demonstrated wide applicability to the deoxygenation of sulfoxides into sulfides and reduction of N-O bonds. Even the challenging nitro functional group was efficiently deoxygenated, affording amines or diverse heterocycles after reductive cyclization reactions. More recently, carbon-based substrates like epoxides, alcohols and ketones have been successfully deoxygenated. Also, dioxomolybdenum complexes accomplished deoxydehydration (DODH) reactions of biomass-derived vicinal 1,2-diols, affording valuable alkenes. The choice of the catalytic systems and reductant is decisive to achieve the desired transformation. Commonly found reducing agents involved phosphorous-based compounds, silanes, molecular hydrogen, or even glycols and other alcohols.

Abstract
The transition-metal-catalyzed cyclopropanation of alkenes by the decomposition of diazo compounds is a powerful and straightforward strategy to produce cyclopropanes, but is tempered by the potentially explosive nature of diazo substrates. Herein we report the Mo-catalyzed regiospecific deoxygenative cyclopropanation of readily available and bench-stable 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds, in which one of the two carbonyl groups acts as a carbene equivalent upon deoxygenation and engages in the subsequent cyclopropanation process. The use of a commercially available Mo catalyst afforded an array of valuable cyclopropanes with exclusive regioselectivity in up to 90 % yield. The synthetic utility of this method was further demonstrated by gram-scale syntheses, late-stage functionalization, and the cyclopropanation of a simple monocarbonyl compound. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that phosphine (or silane) acts as both a mild reductant and a good oxygen acceptor that efficiently regenerates the catalytically active Mo catalyst through reduction of the Mo-oxo complexes.

Abstract
The direct dehydrogenation of alkanes is among the most efficient ways to access valuable alkene products. Although several catalysts have been designed to promote this transformation, they have unfortunately found limited applications in fine chemical synthesis. Here, we report a conceptually novel strategy for the catalytic, intermolecular dehydrogenation of alkanes using a ruthenium catalyst. The combination of a redox-active ligand and a sterically hindered aryl radical intermediate has unleashed this novel strategy. Importantly, mechanistic investigations have been performed to provide a conceptual framework for the further development of this new catalytic dehydrogenation system.

Abstract
The use of carbon monoxide as a direct reducing agent for the deoxygenation of terminal and internal epoxides to the respective olefins is presented. This reaction is homogeneously catalyzed by a carbonyl pincer-iridium(I) complex in combination with a Lewis acid co-catalyst to achieve a pre-activation of the epoxide substrate, as well as the elimination of CO2 from a γ-2-iridabutyrolactone intermediate. Especially terminal alkyl epoxides react smoothly and without significant isomerization to the internal olefins under CO atmosphere in benzene or toluene at 80-120 °C. Detailed investigations reveal a substrate-dependent change in the mechanism for the epoxide C-O bond activation between an oxidative addition under retention of the configuration and an SN 2 reaction that leads to an inversion of the configuration.

Abstract
Reactions facilitating inversion of alkene stereochemistry are rare, sought-after transformations in the field of modern organic synthesis. Although a number of isomerization reactions exist, most methods require specific, highly activated substrates to achieve appreciable conversion without side product formation. Motivated by stereoinvertive epoxide carbonylation reactions, we developed a two-step epoxidation/deoxygenation process that results in overall inversion of alkene stereochemistry. Unlike most deoxygenation systems, carbon monoxide was used as the terminal reductant, preventing difficult postreaction separations, given the gaseous nature of the resulting carbon dioxide byproduct. Various alkyl-substituted cis- and trans-epoxides can be reduced to trans- and cis-alkenes, respectively, in >99:1 stereospecificity and up to 95% yield, providing an alternative to traditional, direct isomerization approaches.

Abstract
This review covers diastereo- and enantiodivergent catalyzed reactions in acyclic and cyclic systems using metal complexes or organocatalysts. Among them, nucleophilic addition to carbon-carbon and carbon-nitrogen double bonds, α-functionalization of carbonyl compounds, allylic substitutions, and ring opening of oxiranes and aziridines are considered. The diastereodivergent synthesis of alkenes from alkynes is also included. Finally, stereodivergent intramolecular and intermolecular cycloadditions and other cyclizations are also reported.
