Inexpensive Ruthenium NNS-Complexes as Efficient Ester Hydrogenation Catalysts with High C=O vs. C=C Selectivities

Single and double deprotonation/dearomatization of the N,S-donor pyridinophane ligand in ruthenium complexes

We report a series of ruthenium complexes with a tetradentate N,S-donor ligand, 2,11-dithia[3.3](2,6)pyridinophane (N₂S₂), that undergo single and double deprotonation in the presence of a base leading to the deprotonation of one or both pyridine rings. Both singly and doubly deprotonated complexes were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The NMR spectra are indicative of the dearomatization of one or both pyridine rings upon the deprotonation of the CH₂-S arm, similar to the dearomatization of phosphine-containing pincer ligands. The deprotonated (N₂S₂)Ru complexes did not show appreciable catalytic or stoichiometric reactivity in transfer hydrogenation, hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of alcohols, and attempted activation of H₂, CO₂, and other substrates. Such a lack of reactivity is likely due to the low stability of the deprotonated species as evident from the structural characterization of one of the decomposition products in which shrinkage of the macrocyclic ring occurs via picolyl arm migration.

Homogeneous Catalyzed Valorization of Furanics: A Sustainable Bridge to Fuels and Chemicals

The development of efficient biomass valorization is imperative for the future sustainable production of chemicals and fuels. Particularly, the last decade has witnessed the development of a plethora of effective and selective transformations of bio-based furanics using homogeneous organometallic catalysis under mild conditions. In this review, we describe some of the advances regarding the conversion of target furanics into value chemicals, monomers for high-performance polymers and materials, and pharmaceutical key intermediates using homogeneous catalysis. Finally, the incorporation of furanic skeletons into complex chemical architectures by multifunctionalization routes is also described.

Recent Progress with Pincer Transition Metal Catalysts for Sustainability

Our planet urgently needs sustainable solutions to alleviate the anthropogenic global warming and climate change. Homogeneous catalysis has the potential to play a fundamental role in this process, providing novel, efficient, and at the same time eco-friendly routes for both chemicals and energy production. In particular, pincer-type ligation shows promising properties in terms of long-term stability and selectivity, as well as allowing for mild reaction conditions and low catalyst loading. Indeed, pincer complexes have been applied to a plethora of sustainable chemical processes, such as hydrogen release, CO2 capture and conversion, N2 fixation, and biomass valorization for the synthesis of high-value chemicals and fuels. In this work, we show the main advances of the last five years in the use of pincer transition metal complexes in key catalytic processes aiming for a more sustainable chemical and energy production.

Properties of Novel Polyesters Made from Renewable 1,4-Pentanediol

Novel polyester polyols were prepared in high yields from biobased 1,4-pentanediol catalyzed by non-toxic phosphoric acid without using a solvent. These oligomers are terminated with hydroxyl groups and have low residual acid content, making them suitable for use in adhesives by polyurethane formation. The thermal behavior of the polyols was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, and tensile testing was performed on the derived polyurethanes. The results were compared with those of polyurethanes obtained with fossil-based 1,4-butanediol polyester polyols. Surprisingly, it was found that a crystalline polyester was obtained when aliphatic long-chain diacids (>C12 ) were used as the diacid building block. The low melting point of the C12 diacid-based material allows the development of biobased shape-memory polymers with very low switching temperatures (<0 °C), an effect that has not yet been reported for a material based on a simple binary polyester. This might find application as thermosensitive adhesives in the packaging of temperature-sensitive goods such as pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, these results indicate that, although 1,4-pentanediol cannot be regarded as a direct substitute for 1,4-butanediol, its novel structure expands the toolbox of the adhesives, coatings, or sealants formulators.

Synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity of novel ruthenium complexes bearing NNN click based ligands

Novel air stable ruthenium(ii) complexes bearing tridentate ligands bis((1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)amine (L1), 1-(1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine (L2) or 2-(4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethan-1-amine (L3) were synthesised. The nitrogen based ligands were easily prepared by virtue of click chemistry using cheap and commercially available reagents. The ruthenium complexes were obtained by heating the Ru(PPh3)3Cl2 precursor and the tridentate NNN ligand in toluene under reflux for 2 hours, achieving yields of 82-87%. These complexes were fully characterized by means of NMR, FT-IR and high resolution ESI spectroscopy. The crystal structure of one of the complexes was determined. These complexes showed excellent activity and selectivity in the hydrogenation of ketones and aldehydes. DFT calculations show that complex 3 may react through an outer-sphere catalytic cycle rather than via an inner-sphere mechanism.

Hydrogenation of Polyesters to Polyether Polyols

The amount of plastic waste is continuously increasing. Besides conventional recycling, one solution to deal with this problem could be to use this waste as a resource for novel materials. In this study, polyesters are hydrogenated to give polyether polyols by using in situ-generated Ru-Triphos catalysts in combination with Lewis acids. The choice of Lewis acid and its concentration relative to the ruthenium catalyst are found to determine the selectivity of the reaction. Monitoring of the molecular weight during the reaction confirms a sequential mechanism in which the diols that are formed by hydrogenation are etherified to the polyethers. To probe the applicability of this tandem hydrogenation etherification approach, a range of polyester substrates is investigated. The oligoether products that form in these reactions have the chain lengths that are appropriate for application in the adhesives and coatings industries. This strategy makes polyether polyols accessible that are otherwise difficult to obtain from conventional fossil-based feedstocks.

Preparation and Study of Reusable Polymerized Catalysts for Ester Hydrogenation

A cross-linked catalyst organic framework was prepared by an alternating ring-opening olefin metathesis polymerization between dichloro{N,N'-bis({(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl}methylidene)bicyclo[2.2.1]-hept-5-ene-2,3-diamine}ruthenium, 1,2-N-di(cis-5-norbornene-2,3-endo-dicarboximido)-ethane, and cis-cyclooctene catalyzed by RuCl2(=CHPh)(PCy3)2 in the presence of a BaSO4 support. The heterogenized catalyst hydrogenated methyl benzoate at a similar rate to the homogeneous catalyst (0.0025 mol % catalyst, 10 mol % KO t Bu, 80 °C, 50 atm, tetrahydrofuran, 21 h, ∼15 000 turnovers during the first 1 h). The catalyst was used five times for a total of 121 680 turnovers. A study on the reusability of this catalyst showed that ester hydrogenations with bifunctional catalysts slow as the reaction proceeds. This inhibition is removed by isolating and reusing the catalyst, suggesting that future catalyst design should emphasize avoiding product inhibition.

Nickel(II) and Palladium(II) Complexes Bearing an Unsymmetrical Pyrrole-Based PNN Pincer and Their Norbornene Polymerization Behaviors versus the Symmetrical NNN and PNP Pincers

Unsymmetrical pincers have been shown to be better than the corresponding symmetrical pincers in several catalysis reactions. A new unsymmetrical PNN propincer, 2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)-5-(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyrrole (1), was synthesized from pyrrole through Mannich bases in a good yield. In addition, the new byproduct 2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)-5-(dimethylaminomethyl)- N-(hydroxymethyl)pyrrole was also isolated. The reaction of 1 with [PdCl₂(PhCN)₂] and Et₃N in toluene yielded [PdCl{C₄H₂N-2-(CH₂Me₂pz)-5-(CH₂PPh₂)-κ³ P,N,N}] (2). The analogous reaction between 1 and [NiCl₂(DME)] or NiX₂ (X = Br, I) in the presence of NEt₃ in acetonitrile afforded [NiX{C₄H₂N-2-(CH₂Me₂pz)-5-(CH₂PPh₂)-κ³ P,N,N}] (3; X = Cl, Br, I). All complexes were structurally characterized. The norbornene polymerization behaviors of the unsymmetrical pincer complexes 2 and 3 in the presence of MMAO or EtAlCl₂ were compared with those of the symmetrical pincer complexes chloro[2,5-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)pyrrolido]palladium(II) (NNN), chloro[2,5-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyrrolido]palladium(II), and chloro[2,5-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyrrolido]nickel(II) (PNP) at different temperatures. The PNN and NNN complexes exhibited far greater activity on the order of 10⁷ g of PNB/mol/h, with quantitative yields in some cases, in comparison to the PNP pincer palladium and nickel complexes. This trend was also supported by the ⁱPr group substituted PNP nickel and palladium pincer complexes. These polymerization behaviors are explained using steric crowding around the metal atom with the support of NMR studies and suggested that the activity increases as the N_pyrazole donor increases. Polymers were characterized by ¹H NMR, IR, TGA, and powder XRD methods.

Base-Free Iron Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of Esters Using EtOH as Hydrogen Source

Herein, we report on the use of the iron pincer complex Iron-MACHO-BH, in the base-free transfer hydrogenation of esters with EtOH as a hydrogen source. More than 20 substrates including aromatic and aliphatic esters and lactones were reduced affording the desired primary alcohols and diols with moderate to excellent isolated yields. It is also possible to reduce polyesters to the diols with this method, enabling a novel way of plastic recycling. Reduction of the renewable substrate methyl levulinate proceeds to form 1,4-pentanediol directly. The yields are largely governed by the equilibrium between the alcohol and the ethyl ester.
