Surface Activation of Faceted Photocatalyst: When Metal Cocatalyst Determines the Nature of the Facets

S-scheme carbon doped-TiO2/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of microcystin-LR and hydrogen evolution

Photocatalytic degradation of pollutants coupled with hydrogen (H2) evolution has emerged as a promising solution for environmental and energy crises. However, the fast recombination of photoexcited electrons and holes limits photocatalytic activities. Herein, an S-scheme heterojunction carbon doped-TiO2/ZnIn2S4 (C-TiO2/ZnIn2S4) was designed by substituting oxygen sites within C-TiO2 by ZnIn2S4. Under visible light irradiation, the optimal C-TiO2/ZnIn2S4 exhibits a higher degradation efficiency (88.6%) of microcystin-LR (MC-LR), compared to pristine C-TiO2 (72.9%) and ZnIn2S4 (66.8%). Furthermore, the H2 yield of the C-TiO2/ZnIn2S4 reaches 1526.9 μmol g-1 h-1, which is 3.83 times and 2.87 times that of the C-TiO2 and ZnIn2S4, respectively. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that an internal electric field (IEF) informed in the C-TiO2/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction, accelerates the separation of photogenerated charge pairs, thereby enhancing photocatalytic efficiency of MC-LR degradation and H2 production. This work highlights a new perspective on the development of high-performance photocatalysts for wastewater treatment and H2 generation.

Crystal facet and phase engineering for advanced water splitting

This review covers the principles and recent advances in facet and phase engineering of catalysts for photocatalytic, photoelectrochemical, and electrochemical water splitting. It suggests the basis of catalyst design for advanced water splitting.

In this review, we summarize recent advances in the facet design of bismuth-based single-crystal plates based on facet-dependent charge separation for photocatalytic reactions, and the manipulation of the spatial charge separation is highlighted.

Morphology-Governed Performance of Plasmonic Photocatalysts

Plasmonic photocatalysts have been extensively studied for the past decade as a possible solution to energy crisis and environmental problems. Although various reports on plasmonic photocatalysts have been published, including synthesis methods, applications, and mechanism clarifications, the quantum yields of photochemical reactions are usually too low for commercialization. Accordingly, it has been proposed that preparation of plasmonic photocatalysts with efficient light harvesting and inhibition of charge carriers’ recombination might result in improvement of photocatalytic activity. Among various strategies, nano-architecture of plasmonic photocatalysts seems to be one of the best strategies, including the design of properties for both semiconductor and noble-metal-deposits, as well as the interactions between them. For example, faceted nanoparticles, nanotubes, aerogels, and super-nano structures of semiconductors have shown the improvement of photocatalytic activity and stability. Moreover, the selective deposition of noble metals on some parts of semiconductor nanostructures (e.g., specific facets, basal or lateral surfaces) results in an activity increase. Additionally, mono-, bi-, and ternary-metal-modifications have been proposed as the other ways of performance improvement. However, in some cases, the interactions between different noble metals might cause unwanted charge carriers’ recombination. Accordingly, this review discusses the recent strategies on the improvements of the photocatalytic performance of plasmonic photocatalysts.

Facet-selective interface design of a BiOI(110)/Br-Bi2O2CO3(110) p–n heterojunction photocatalyst

Facet-Engineered Surface and Interface Design of Photocatalytic Materials

The facet-engineered surface and interface design for photocatalytic materials has been proven as a versatile approach to enhance their photocatalytic performance. This review article encompasses some recent advances in the facet engineering that has been performed to control the surface of mono-component semiconductor systems and to design the surface and interface structures of multi-component heterostructures toward photocatalytic applications. The review begins with some key points which should receive attention in the facet engineering on photocatalytic materials. We then discuss the synthetic approaches to achieve the facet control associated with the surface and interface design. In the following section, the facet-engineered surface design on mono-component photocatalytic materials is introduced, which forms a basis for the discussion on more complex systems. Subsequently, we elucidate the facet-engineered surface and interface design of multi-component photocatalytic materials. Finally, the existing challenges and future prospects are discussed.

Carbon quantum dot/mixed crystal TiO2 composites via a hydrogenation process: an efficient photocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction

High-performance photocatalyst including mixed crystal TiO₂/carbon quantum dots was obtained via a facile approach, which exhibited excellent property for hydrogen evolution under solar light.
