Assembly of Copper Alkynyl Clusters into Dimensionally Diverse Coordinated Polymers Mediated by Pyridine Ligands

Surface ligands play crucial roles in modifying the properties of metal nanoclusters and stabilizing atomically precise structures, and also serve as vital linkers for constructing cluster-based coordination polymers. In this study, we present the results of the solvothermal synthesis of eight novel copper alkynyl clusters incorporating pyridine ligands using a one-pot method. The resulting compounds underwent characterization through elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). Our observations revealed that distinct pyridine ligands with varying lengths and coordination sites exert significant influence on the structure and dimensionality of the clusters. The structural diversity of these clusters led to the formation of one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), or dimer arrangements linked by seven pyridine bridging ligands. Remarkably, these complexes exhibited unique UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence properties, which were influenced by the specific bridging ligand and structural framework. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated the capability of the conjugated system in the pyridine ligand to impact the band gap of clusters. This study not only unveils the inherent structural diversity in coordination polymers based on copper alkynyl clusters but also offers valuable insights into harnessing ligand engineering for structural and property modulation.

Exploring the impact of various reducing agents on Cu nanocluster synthesis

The synthesis of copper (Cu) nanoclusters (NCs) has experienced significant advancements in recent years. Despite the exploration of metal NCs dating back almost two decades, challenges specific to Cu NC synthesis arise from the variable oxidation states and heightened reactivity of intermediate Cu complexes, distinguishing it from its analogous counterparts. In this study, we present a comprehensive overview of this newly evolving research domain, focusing on the synthetic aspects. We delve into various factors influencing the synthesis of Cu NCs, with specific emphasis on the role of reducing agents. The impact of the reducing agent is particularly pivotal in this synthetic process, ultimately influencing the formation of model M(0)-containing NCs, which are less readily accessible in the context of Cu NCs. We anticipate that this frontier article will pave the way for accelerated research in the field of Cu NCs. By aiding in the selection of specific reaction conditions and reducing agents, we believe that this work will contribute to a faster-paced exploration of Cu NCs, further advancing our understanding and applications in this exciting area of nanomaterial research.

Carborane-Cluster-Wrapped Copper Cluster with Cyclodextrin-like Cavities for Chiral Recognition

Chiral atomically precise metal clusters, known for their remarkable chiroptical properties, hold great potential for applications in chirality recognition. However, advancements in this field have been constrained by the limited exploration of host-guest chemistry, involving metal clusters. This study reports the synthesis of a chiral Cu16(C2B10H10S2)8 (denoted as Cu16@CB8, where C2B10H12S2H2 = 9,12-(HS)2-1,2-closo-carborane) cluster by an achiral carboranylthiolate ligand. The chiral R-/S-Cu16@CB8 cluster features chiral cavities reminiscent of cyclodextrins, which are surrounded by carborane clusters, yet they crystallize in a racemate. These cyclodextrin-like cavities demonstrated the specific recognition of amino acids, as indicated by the responsive output of circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence signals of Cu16 moieties of the Cu16@CB8 cluster. Notably, a quantitative chiroptical analysis of amino acids in a short time and a concomitant deracemization of Cu16@CB8 were achieved. Density functional tight-binding molecular dynamics simulation and noncovalent interaction analysis further unraveled the great importance of the cavities and binding sites for chiral recognition. Dipeptide, tripeptide, and polypeptide containing the corresponding amino acids (Cys, Arg, or His residues) display the same chiral recognition, showing the generality of this approach. The functional synergy of dual clusters, comprising carborane and metal clusters, is for the first time demonstrated in the Cu16@CB8 cluster, resulting in the valuable quantification of the enantiomeric excess (ee) value of amino acids. This work opens a new avenue for chirality sensors based on chiral metal clusters with unique chiroptical properties and inspires the development of carborane clusters in host-guest chemistry.

NIR-II emissive anionic copper nanoclusters with intrinsic photoredox activity in single-electron transfer

Ultrasmall copper nanoclusters have recently emerged as promising photocatalysts for organic synthesis, owing to their exceptional light absorption ability and large surface areas for efficient interactions with substrates. Despite significant advances in cluster-based visible-light photocatalysis, the types of organic transformations that copper nanoclusters can catalyze remain limited to date. Herein, we report a structurally well-defined anionic Cu40 nanocluster that emits in the second near-infrared region (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) after photoexcitation and can conduct single-electron transfer with fluoroalkyl iodides without the need for external ligand activation. This photoredox-active copper nanocluster efficiently catalyzes the three-component radical couplings of alkenes, fluoroalkyl iodides, and trimethylsilyl cyanide under blue-LED irradiation at room temperature. A variety of fluorine-containing electrophiles and a cyanide nucleophile can be added onto an array of alkenes, including styrenes and aliphatic olefins. Our current work demonstrates the viability of using readily accessible metal nanoclusters to establish photocatalytic systems with a high degree of practicality and reaction complexity.

Stepwise structural evolution toward robust carboranealkynyl-protected copper nanocluster catalysts for nitrate electroreduction

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) are emerging as idealized model catalysts for imprecise metal nanoparticles to unveil their structure-activity relationship. However, the directional synthesis of robust metal NCs with accessible catalytic active sites remains a great challenge. In this work, we achieved bulky carboranealkynyl-protected copper NCs, the monomer Cu13·3PF6 and nido-carboranealkynyl bridged dimer Cu26·4PF6, with fair stability as well as accessible open metal sites step by step through external ligand shell modification and metal-core evolution. Both Cu13·3PF6 and Cu26·4PF6 demonstrate remarkable catalytic activity and selectivity in electrocatalytic nitrate (NO3-) reduction to NH3 reaction, with the dimer Cu26·4PF6 displaying superior performance. The mechanism of this catalytic reaction was elucidated through theoretical computations in conjunction with in situ FTIR spectra. This study not only provides strategies for accessing desired copper NC catalysts but also establishes a platform to uncover the structure-activity relationship of copper NCs.

Solvent-Mediated Hetero/Homo-Phase Crystallization of Copper Nanoclusters and Superatomic Kernel-Related NIR Phosphorescence

Atomically precise superatomic copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) have been the subject of immense interest for their intriguing structures and diverse properties; nonetheless, the variable oxidation state of copper ions and complex solvation effects in wet synthesis systems pose significant challenges for comprehending their synthesis and crystallization mechanism. Herein, we present a solvent-mediated approach for the synthesis of two Cu NCs, namely, superatomic Cu26 and pure-Cu(I) Cu16. They initially formed as a hetero-phase and then separated as a homo-phase via modulating binary solvent composition. In situ UV/vis absorption and electrospray ionization mass spectra revealed that the solvent-mediated assembly was determined to be the underlying mechanism of hetero/homo-phase crystallization. Cu26 is a 2-electron superatom with a kernel-shell structure that includes a [Cu20Se12]4- shell and [Cu6]4+ kernel, containing two 1S jellium electrons. Conversely, Cu16 is a pure-Cu(I) Cu/Se nanocluster that features a [Cu16Se6]4+ core protected by extra dimercaptomaleonitrile ligands. Remarkably, Cu26 exhibits unique near-infrared phosphorescence (NIR PH) at 933 nm due to the presence of a superatomic kernel-related charge transfer state (3MM(Cu)CT). Overall, this work not only showcases the hetero/homo-phase crystallization of Cu NCs driven by a solvent-mediated assembly mechanism but also enables the rare occurrence of NIR PH within the 2-electron copper superatom family.

Atomically Precise Mo2Cu17 Bimetallic Nanocluster: Synergistic Mo2O4-Coupled Copper Alkynyl Cluster for the Improved Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Performance

Electrolytic hydrogen production via water splitting holds significant promise for the future of the energy revolution. The design of efficient and abundant catalysts, coupled with a comprehensive understanding of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) mechanism, is of paramount importance. In this study, we propose a strategy to craft an atomically precise cluster catalyst with superior HER performance by cocoupling a Mo2O4 structural unit and a Cu(I) alkynyl cluster into a structured framework. The resulting bimetallic cluster, Mo2Cu17, encapsulates a distinctive structure [Mo2O4Cu17(TC4A)4(PhC≡C)6], comprising a binuclear Mo2O4 subunit and a {Cu17(TC4A)2(PhC≡C)6} cluster, both shielded by thiacalix[4]arene (TC4A) and phenylacetylene (PhC≡CH). Expanding our exploration, we synthesized two homoleptic CuI alkynyl clusters coprotected by the TC4A and PhC≡C- ligands: Cu13 and Cu22. Remarkably, Mo2Cu17 demonstrates superior HER efficiency compared to its counterparts, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline solution with an overpotential as low as 120 mV, significantly outperforming Cu13 (178 mV) and Cu22 (214 mV) nanoclusters. DFT calculations illuminate the catalytic mechanism and indicate that the intrinsically higher activity of Mo2Cu17 may be attributed to the synergistic Mo2O4-Cu(I) coupling.

Cu(I) NCs are a focal point in extensive research due to their abundance, cost-effectiveness, and unique luminescent attributes. Despite similar core sizes, their luminescent characteristics vary, influenced by multiple factors. Progress hinges on synthesizing new NCs and modifying existing ones, with postsynthetic alterations impacting emission properties. The rapid advancements in this field pose challenges in discerning essential points for excelling amidst competition with other d10 NCs. This Perspective explores the intricate origins of PL emission in Cu(I) NCs, providing a comprehensive review of their correlated structural architectures. Understanding the mechanistic origin of PL emission in each cluster is crucial for correlating diverse characteristics, contributing to a deeper comprehension from both fundamental and applied scientific perspectives.

Atom-Precise Ligated Copper and Copper-Rich Nanoclusters with Mixed-Valent Cu(I)/Cu(0) Character: Structure-Electron Count Relationships

Copper homometallic and copper-rich heterometallic nanoclusters with some Cu(0) character are reviewed. Their structure and stability are discussed in terms of their number of "free" electrons. In many aspects, this structural chemistry differs from that of their silver or copper homologs. Whereas the two-electron species are by far the most numerous, only one eight-electron species is known, but more electron-rich nanoclusters have also been reported. Owing to the relatively recent development of this chemistry, it is likely that more electron-rich species will be reported in the future.

Hydride-doped Ag17Cu10 nanoclusters as high-performance electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction

The atomically precise metal electrocatalysts for driving CO2 reduction reactions are eagerly pursued as they are model systems to identify the active sites, understand the reaction mechanism, and further guide the exploration of efficient and practical metal nanocatalysts. Reported herein is a nanocluster-based electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction, which features a clear geometric and electronic structure, and more importantly excellent performance. The nanocatalysts with the molecular formula of [Ag17Cu10(dppm)4(PhC≡C)20H4]3+ have been obtained in a facile way. The unique metal framework of the cluster, with silver, copper, and hydride included, and dedicated surface structure, with strong (dppm) and labile (alkynyl) ligands coordinated, endow the cluster with excellent performance in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction to CO. With the atomically precise electrocatalysts in hand, not only high reactivity and selectivity (Faradaic efficiency for CO up to 91.6%) but also long-term stability (24 h), are achieved.

Electronic structure modulation of Pdn (n = 2-5) nanoclusters in the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Studying the modulation of nanoclusters at an atomic scale is essential to comprehend the connection between properties and catalytic performance. Herein, we synthesized and characterized Pd_n (n = 2-5) nanoclusters coordinated with di-1-adamantylphosphine. Pd₅ nanoclusters showed the best catalytic performance (conversion = 99.3%, selectivity = 95.3%) for the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to hydrocinnamaldehyde, with XPS identifying Pd^δ+ as the key active component. This work aimed to explore the relationship among the number of Pd atoms, their electronic structure and catalytic activity.

Amorphous Copper-Based Nanoparticles with Clusterization-Triggered Phosphorescence for Ultrasensing 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene

Amorphous metal-based nanostructures have attracted great attention recently due to their facilitative electron transfer and abundant reactive sites, whereas it remains enigmatic as to whether amorphous copper-based nanoparticles (CuNPs) can be achieved. Here, for synthesizing amorphous CuNPs, glutathione is adopted as a ligand to inhibit the nucleation and crystallization process via its electrostatic repulsion. By subtly tailoring the solvent polarity, not only can amorphous glutathione-functionalized CuNPs (GSH-CuNPs) with phosphorescent performance be achieved after transferring the non-conjugation of GSH ligand to through-space conjugation, namely clusterization-triggered emission, but also the phosphorescence-off of GSH-CuNPs toward 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) can be realized by the photoinduced electron-transfer process through the hydrogen bond channel, which is established between carboxyl and amino groups of GSH-CuNPs with the nitryl group of TNT. Benefitting from the intrinsic superiorities of the amorphous CuNPs, desired phosphorescence and detection performances of GSH-CuNPs toward airborne TNT microparticulates are undoubtedly realized, including high quantum yield (13.22%), excellent specificity in 33 potential interferents, instantaneous response, and ultralow detection limit (1.56 pg). The present GSH-CuNPs are expected to stretch amorphous metal-based nanostructures and deepen the insights into amorphous materials for optical detection.

Recent progress in dichalcophosphate coinage metal clusters and superatoms

Atomically precise clusters of group 11 metals (Cu, Ag, and Au) attract considerable attention owing to their remarkable structure and fascinating properties. One of the unique subclasses of these clusters is based on dichalcophosphate ligands of [(RO)₂PE₂]^- type (E = S or Se, and R = alkyl). These ligands successfully stabilise the most diverse Cu, Ag, and Au clusters and superatoms, spanning from simple ones to amazing assemblies featuring unusual structural and bonding patterns. It is noteworthy that such complicated clusters are assembled directly from cheap and simple reagents, metal(I) salts and dichalcophosphate anions. This reaction, when performed in the presence of a hydride or other anion sources, or foreign metal ions, results in hydrido- or anion-templated homo- or heteronuclear structures. In this feature article, we survey the recent advances in this exciting field, highlighting the powerful synthetic capabilities of the system "a metal(I) salt - [(RO)₂PX₂]^- ligands - a templating anion or borohydride" as an inexhaustible platform for the creation of new atomically precise clusters, superatoms, and nanoalloys.

Eight-Electron Superatomic Cu31 Nanocluster with Chiral Kernel and NIR-II Emission

Owing to the inherent instability caused by the low Cu(I)/Cu(0) half-cell reduction potential, Cu(0)-containing copper nanoclusters are quite uncommon in comparison to their Ag and Au congeners. Here, a novel eight-electron superatomic copper nanocluster [Cu₃₁(4-MeO-PhC≡C)₂₁(dppe)₃](ClO₄)₂ (Cu₃₁, dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) is presented with total structural characterization. The structural determination reveals that Cu₃₁ features an inherent chiral metal core arising from the helical arrangement of two sets of three Cu₂ units encircling the icosahedral Cu₁₃ core, which is further shielded by 4-MeO-PhC≡C^- and dppe ligands. Cu₃₁ is the first copper nanocluster carrying eight free electrons, which is further corroborated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Interestingly, Cu₃₁ demonstrates the first near-infrared (750-950 nm, NIR-I) window absorption and the second near-infrared (1000-1700 nm, NIR-II) window emission, which is exceptional in the copper nanocluster family and endows it with great potential in biological applications. Of note, the 4-methoxy groups providing close contacts with neighboring clusters are crucial for the cluster formation and crystallization, while 2-methoxyphenylacetylene leads only to copper hydride clusters, Cu₆H or Cu₃₂H₁₄. This research not only showcases a new member of copper superatoms but also exemplifies that copper nanoclusters, which are nonluminous in the visible range may emit luminescence in the deep NIR region.

Chiral copper-hydride nanoclusters: synthesis, structure, and assembly

An effective strategy is developed to synthesize a novel and stable layered Cu nanocluster using a one-pot reduction method. The cluster, with a molecular formula of [Cu₁₄(^tBuS)₃(PPh₃)₇H₁₀]BF₄ which has been unambiguously characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, exhibits different structures from previously reported analogues with core-shell geometries. In the absence of chiral ligands, the cluster displays intrinsic chirality owing to the non-covalent ligand-ligand interactions (e.g., C-H⋯Cu interactions and C-H⋯π interactions) to lock the central copper core. The interlacing of chiral-cluster enantiomers forms a large cavity, which lays the foundation for a series of potential applications such as drug filling and gas adsorption. Moreover, the C-H⋯H-C interactions of phenyl groups between different cluster moieties promote the formation of a dextral helix and realization of the self-assembly of nanostructures.

A stable superatomic Cu6(SMPP)6 nanocluster with dual emission

We have synthesized single crystals of a highly stable Cu₆ nanocluster protected by six ligands of 2-mercapto-5-n-propylpyrimidine (SMPP). This Cu₆(SMPP)₆ cluster has a quasi-octahedral superatomic Cu₆ core, with the Cu atoms being protected by both -S- and N-bidentate coordination of the SMPP ligands. Interestingly, each Cu atom is linked with an N atom, while the two neighboring Cu atoms on the same triangular facet are linked by the -S- bridge of the ligand. Single-crystal parsing results show that the altered orientation of the SMPP ligands give rise to three packing modes (named as 1, 2, and 3) of the Cu₆(SMPP)₆ NCs. Apart from the well-organized coordination, this Cu₆(SMPP)₆ nanocluster exhibits superatomic stability with a metallic core of 4 valence electrons (1S²2S²||3S²), enabling to largely balance the interactions between the polynuclear core and delocalized electrons. Interestingly, the Cu₆(SMPP)₆ NCs display dual emissions in both ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and near-infrared (NIR) regions. First-principles calculations well reproduce the experimental spectrum, shedding light on the nature of excitation states and metal-ligand interactions in the Cu₆(SMPP)₆ cluster.

Platonic and Archimedean solids in discrete metal-containing clusters

Metal-containing clusters have attracted increasing attention over the past 2-3 decades. This intense interest can be attributed to the fact that these discrete metal aggregates, whose atomically precise structures are resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), often possess intriguing geometrical features (high symmetry, aesthetically pleasing shapes and architectures) and fascinating physical properties, providing invaluable opportunities for the intersection of different disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematical geometry and materials science. In this review, we attempt to reinterpret and connect these fascinating clusters from the perspective of Platonic and Archimedean solid characteristics, focusing on highly symmetrical and complex metal-containing (metal = Al, Ti, V, Mo, W, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, lanthanoids (Ln), and actinoids) high-nuclearity clusters, including metal-oxo/hydroxide/chalcogenide clusters and metal clusters (with metal-metal binding) protected by surface organic ligands, such as thiolate, phosphine, alkynyl, carbonyl and nitrogen/oxygen donor ligands. Furthermore, we present the symmetrical beauty of metal cluster structures and the geometrical similarity of different types of clusters and provide a large number of examples to show how to accurately describe the metal clusters from the perspective of highly symmetrical polyhedra. Finally, knowledge and further insights into the design and synthesis of unknown metal clusters are put forward by summarizing these "star" molecules.

Modular Cocrystallization of Customized Carboranylthiolate-Protected Copper Nanoclusters via Host-Guest Interactions

Cocrystals containing distinct atom-precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) provide an opportunity to elucidate the crystallization process, architectural complexity, and newly emerging properties of condensed-state metal NC-assembled materials. However, the controllable preparation of such cocrystals is still challenging. Herein, we present a modular strategy to cocrystallize two customized carboranylthiolate-protected copper NCs, Cu₁₄(C₂B₁₀H₁₀S₂)₆(CH₃CN)₆ (Cu₁₄) and Cu₁₆(C₂B₁₀H₁₀S₂)₈ (Cu₁₆), which adopt matched surface patterns by host-guest chemistry. The Cu₁₄·Cu₁₆ cocrystals show integrated UV-vis adsorption and dual emission stemming from the Cu₁₄ and Cu₁₆ NCs. Moreover, the component NCs are selectively doped by gold atoms, which is a promising way to incorporate diverse properties of metal cluster-based cocrystals. This work not only provides a copper NC-based cocrystal for a profound study on a condensed-state copper nanomaterial but also develops a modular strategy for the cocrystallization of metal NCs.

Ligand-Shell Engineering of a Au28 Nanocluster Boosts Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Subtle tailoring of gold nanoclusters (NCs) could significantly change their physicochemical properties. However, direct comparison of the catalytic performance of gold NCs with identical metal cores but distinct ligand shells is rarely elucidated. In this work, a novel gold NC, Au₂₈ (C₂ B₁₀ H₁₁ S)₁₂ (tht)₄ Cl₄ (Au₂₈ -S), was isolated by a facile self-reducing synthesis. Au₂₈ -S adopts an identical Au₂₈ metal framework to that of the reported alkynyl-protected Au₂₈ -C. The different protective layers lead to distinctions in their electronic structure and optical properties. Furthermore, Au₂₈ -S shows better catalytic activity for the electrochemical reduction of CO₂ to CO. Theoretical calculations identified the active sites and shed light on the catalytic mechanism to elucidate the different catalytic performances. This work provides an ideal platform to study the protective layer-activity relationship of gold NCs, and may also provide guidance in the design of metal NC-based catalysts.

Enhanced Fluorescence with Tunable Color in Doped Diphosphine-Protected Gold Nanoclusters

Rational control of the luminescent properties of ligand-protected coinage metal clusters has long been pursued but remains challenging. Here we explore the crucial structural and electronic factors governing the fluorescence of a diphosphine-protected [Au₁₃(dppe)₅Cl₂]³⁺ cluster by time-dependent density functional theory calculations. By substituting the central Au atom with group 5 to group 11 transition metal atoms, the emission wavelength is adjustable from red to blue, accompanied by enhanced fluorescence intensity compared with the undoped cluster. The evolution of light-emitting behavior upon doping and the corresponding roles of the dopant, Au cage, ligands, and their interplay are interpreted at the electronic structure level. In particular, strong dopant-Au cage interaction associated with large electron-hole overlap on the dopant are is a key factor to endow large emission energy and intensity. These theoretical results provide vital guidance for designing atomically precise nanoclusters with visible fluorescence and high quantum yield for practical uses.

[Cu18H3(S-Adm)12(PPh3)4Cl2]: fusion of Platonic and Johnson solids through a Cu(0) center and its photophysical properties

Structural elucidation of atom-precise thiolate-protected copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) containing Cu(0) is quite challenging. Here, we report a new adamantane-thiol-protected NC, [Cu₁₈H₃(S-Adm)₁₂(PPh₃)₄Cl₂] (Cu₁₈), which represents the first observation of a rare mononuclear Cu(0)-containing Cu₁₀H₃Cl₂ core that is constructed via kernel fusion through vertex sharing of the Platonic-solid- and Johnson-solid-geometry-like kernels and hydride-bridging. The unique core is surrounded by a Cu₈S₁₂P₄ metal–ligand motif shell and adopts a butterfly-like structure. In comparison to its closest structural analogue, the predominant effect of the principal Cu atom vacancy-induced structural rearrangement is evidenced. The occupied orbitals of this NC have a major d-orbital contribution to the distorted Cu₆ octahedral kernel, whereas unoccupied orbitals owe a contribution to the distorted Cu₅ square-pyramidal kernel. Thus, the charge transfer phenomenon is uniquely instigated between the two fused kernels through Cu(d) → Cu(d) transition via the Cu(0) center. This NC exhibits violet emission due to kernel-dominated relaxation at room temperature, which is further enhanced by confining the surface protecting ligands through recognition-site-specific host–guest supramolecular adduct formation by β-cyclodextrin. The unique electronic structure of this NC further facilitates its application toward photocurrent generation. Thus, this study offers a unique strategy for the controllable synthesis of a Cu(0)-containing Cu NC, which enables atomic-level insights into their optoelectronic properties.

An example of a butterfly-like [Cu₁₈H₃(S-Adm)₁₂(PPh₃)₄Cl₂] cluster with vertex-sharing kernels through a Cu(0) center. Combined experimental and theoretical results correlate its photophysical properties with its unique structural architecture.

A 20-core copper(I) nanocluster as electron-hole recombination inhibitor on TiO2 nanosheets for enhancing photocatalytic H2 evolution

For the design of atom-precise copper nanoclusters, besides the exploration of their aesthetic cage-like architectures, their structural modulation and potential applications are being extensively explored. Herein, an atom-precise 20-core copper(I)-alkynyl nanocluster (UJN-Cu20) protected by ethinyloestradiol ligands issynthesized. By virtue of outer-shell hydroxyl groups, UJN-Cu20 could be uniformly modified on the surface of TiO₂ nanosheets via hydrogen bonding interactions, thus forming an efficient nanocomposite photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. By constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of the nanocomposite (13 mmol g^-1 h^-1) significantly improved as compared to that of TiO₂ nanosheets (0.4 mmol g^-1 h^-1). As a narrow bandgap cocatalyst, UJN-Cu20 is confirmed to effectively inhibit the electron-hole recombination on the surface of the TiO₂ nanosheet, which provides a new concept for the design of copper cluster-assisted effective photocatalysts.

Copper(I) Alkynyl Clusters with Crystallization-Induced Emission Enhancement

Four copper(I) alkynyl complexes incorporating phosphate ligands, namely, [Cu₁₆(^tBuC≡C)₁₂(PhOPO₃)₂]_n (1; PhOPO₃ = phenyl phosphate), [Cu₁₆(^tBuC≡C)₁₂(1-NaphOPO₃)₂]_n (2; 1-NaphOPO₃ = 1-naphthyl phosphate), [VO₄@Cu₂₅(^tBuC≡C)₁₉(1-NaphOPO₃)](PF₆)_0.5(F)_0.5 (3), and [PO₄@Cu₂₅(^tBuC≡C)₁₉(1-NaphOPO₃)](PF₆)_0.5(F)_0.5 (4), were solvothermally synthesized and well-characterized by IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed that the Cu₁₆ cluster-based coordination chain polymers 1 and 2 are formed by assembly during crystallization, while 3 and 4 contain high-nuclearity copper(I) composite clusters enclosing orthovanadate and phosphate template ions, respectively, that are supported by ROPO₃^2- ligands. Complexes 1-4 exhibit crystallization-induced emission enhancement. Their crystalline state shows strong luminescence, in striking contrast to the weak emission of the amorphous state and solution phase. A detailed investigation of the crystal structure suggests that well-arranged C-H···π and π···π interactions between the ligands are the major factors for this enhanced emission. Clusters 3 and 4 also exhibit photocurrent responses upon visible-light illumination.

Intermetallic phases meet intermetalloid clusters

In this article intermetalloid clusters of Cu-Zn, Cu-AI, Cu-Sn, and Cu-Pb are discussed. Intermetallic compounds based on these metal combinations are of the Hume-Rothery type with well-defined structures related to the valence electron count of the involved metals. Many Zintl-type and molecular clusters with these metals are known with remarkable structural parallels to the respective solid-state phases. On several examples, this article discusses intermetalloid clusters in terms of their metal core structures and relates them to structural principles in intermetallic solid-state phases. Also the syntheses of such clusters are addressed. Zintl-type and molecular clusters are most generally accessible from organometallic precursor complexes with redox processes between the different metals as an underlying synthesis concept.

[Cu36H10(PET)24(PPh3)6Cl2] Reveals Surface Vacancy Defects in Ligand-Stabilized Metal Nanoclusters

Precise identification and in-depth understanding of defects in nanomaterials can aid in rationally modulating defect-induced functionalities. However, few studies have explored vacancy defects in ligand-stabilized metal nanoclusters with well-defined structures, owing to the substantial challenge of synthesizing and isolating such defective metal nanoclusters. Herein, a novel defective copper hydride nanocluster, [Cu₃₆H₁₀(PET)₂₄(PPh₃)₆Cl₂] (Cu36; PET: phenylethanethiolate; PPh₃: triphenylphosphine), is successfully synthesized at the gram scale via a simple one-pot reduction method. Structural analysis reveals that Cu36 is a distorted half cubic nanocluster, evolved from the perfect Nichol's half cube. The two surface copper vacancies in Cu36 are found to be the principal imperfections, which result in some structural adjustments, including copper atom reconstruction near the vacancies as well as ligand modifications (e.g., substitution, migration, and exfoliation). Density functional theory calculations imply that the above-mentioned defects have a considerable influence on the electronic structure and properties. The modeling suggests that the formation of defective Cu36 rather than the perfect half cube is driven by the enlargement of the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the nanocluster. The structural evolution induced by the surface copper atom vacancies provides atomically precise insights into the defect-induced readjustment of the local structure and introduces new avenues for understanding the chemistry of defects in nanomaterials.

A high-nuclearity CuI/CuII nanocluster catalyst for phenol degradation

Herein, we report a 54-nuclei copper nanocluster, [Cu₅₄S₁₃O₆(^tBuS)₂₀(^tBuSO₃)₁₂] (Cu₅₄), which is the largest atom-precise Cu^I/Cu^II mix-valent cluster reported. The Cu₅₄ nanoclusters supported by TiO₂ exhibit decent photocatalytic activity for phenol degradation under visible light. This work provides a platform to explore the catalytic behaviors of Cu^I/Cu^II nanosystems.

Precise Implantation of an Archimedean Ag@Cu12 Cuboctahedron into a Platonic Cu4Bis(diphenylphosphino)hexane6 Tetrahedron

Precision loading of nanoclusters in confined spaces, which has been enthusiastically pursued in the scientific realm, is still associated with some mysteries of "how", "when", and "why". Here, we isolated two similar heterometallic cluster-in-cage compounds, [Ag@Cu₁₂S₈@Cu₄(dpph)₆]X (X = OH, SD/AgCu16a and X = PF₆, SD/AgCu16b; SD = SunDi), by use of an antigalvanic reaction between organometallic [PhC≡CCu]_n and Ph₃CSH with elemental silver. Both compounds are formed by fitting an Archimedean Ag@Cu₁₂ cuboctahedral cluster into a Platonic Cu₄(dpph)₆ tetrahedral cage [dpph = bis(diphenylphosphino)hexane]. The Ag@Cu₁₂ cluster is a hollow cuboctahedral Cu₁₂ cage filled with a central Ag^I atom, and all eight triangular faces of the Ag@Cu₁₂ cuboctahedron are triply capped by eight S^2- ions, four of which in a tetrahedral array further internally pillar four Cu vertices of the outer Cu₄(dpph)₆ tetrahedron, fixing the cluster in the cage. Both compounds can be deemed as molecular fragments excised from porous nanomaterials filled with discrete nanoclusters, thus providing more details for understanding the confined growth of atomically precise nanoclusters. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) reveals that the AgCu₁₆ cluster is quite stable in CH₂Cl₂ and can stepwise lose dpph ligand in the gas phase under increased collision energy. This work not only presents a precise aggregation of metal atoms in a confined cavity to form a cluster-in-cage compound but also provides deep insights into the binding and geometry matching between clusters and cages in one entity.

Copper nanoclusters: designed synthesis, structural diversity, and multiplatform applications

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (MNCs) have gained tremendous research interest in recent years due to their extraordinary properties. The molecular-like properties that originate from the quantized electronic states provide novel opportunities for the construction of unique nanomaterials possessing rich molecular-like absorption, luminescence, and magnetic properties. The field of monolayer-protected metal nanoclusters, especially copper, with well-defined molecular structures and compositions, is relatively new, about two to three decades old. Nevertheless, the massive progress in the field illustrates the importance of such nanoobjects as promising materials for various applications. In this respect, nanocluster-based catalysts have become very popular, showing high efficiencies and activities for the catalytic conversion of chemical compounds. Biomedical applications of clusters are an active research field aimed at finding better fluorescent contrast agents, therapeutic pharmaceuticals for the treatment and prevention of diseases, the early diagnosis of cancers and other potent diseases, especially at early stages. A huge library of structures and the compositions of copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) with atomic precisions have already been discovered during last few decades; however, there are many concerns to be addressed and questions to be answered. Hopefully, in future, with the combined efforts of material scientists, inorganic chemists, and computational scientists, a thorough understanding of the unique molecular-like properties of metal nanoclusters will be achieved. This, on the other hand, will allow the interdisciplinary researchers to design novel catalysts, biosensors, or therapeutic agents using highly structured, atomically precise, and stable CuNCs. Thus, we hope this review will guide the reader through the field of CuNCs, while discussing the main achievements and improvements, along with challenges and drawbacks that one needs to face and overcome.

SC-SC Anion-Assisted Linker Exchange within a Three-Dimensional Cu(II)-Triazole Framework: A Luminescent Probe for S2

A three-dimensional (3D) binodal 3,5-connected net, {[Cu(MTP)(H2O)](NO3)}n (1) with the Schläfli symbol of {3·72}{32·75·83} can be transformed into a two-dimensional (2D) kagóme network with the Schlafli symbol of {32·62·72} in an irreversible single crystal-single crystal (SC-SC) guest-assisted linker exchange process. The product of this SC-SC represents the first luminescent probe for S2- based on triazole ligand.

Ultrabright Au@Cu14 nanoclusters: 71.3% phosphorescence quantum yield in non-degassed solution at room temperature

The photoluminescence of metal nanoclusters is typically low, and phosphorescence emission is rare due to ultrafast free-electron dynamics and quenching by phonons. Here, we report an electronic engineering approach to achieving very high phosphorescence (quantum yield 71.3%) from a [Au@Cu₁₄(SPh ^t Bu)₁₂(PPh(C₂H₄CN)₂)₆]⁺ nanocluster (abbreviated Au@Cu ₁₄ ) in non-degassed solution at room temperature. The structure of Au@Cu ₁₄ has a single-Au-atom kernel, which is encapsulated by a rigid Cu(I) complex cage. This core-shell structure leads to highly efficient singlet-to-triplet intersystem crossing and suppression of nonradiative energy loss. Unlike the phosphorescent organic materials and organometallic complexes-which require de-aerated conditions due to severe quenching by air (i.e., O₂)-the phosphorescence from Au@Cu ₁₄ is much less sensitive to air, which is important for lighting and biomedical applications.

Spontaneous Resolution of Chiral Multi-Thiolate-Protected Ag30 Nanoclusters

Despite significant progress achieved in the preparation of chiral nanoparticles, the enantioseparation of racemates still presents a big challenge in nanomaterial research. Herein, we report the synthesis and structural characterization of racemic anisotropic nanocluster Ag₃₀(C₂B₁₀H₉S₃)₈Dppm₆ (Ag ₃₀ -rac), which is protected by mixed carboranetrithiolate and phosphine ligands. Spontaneous self-resolution of the racemates was realized through conglomerate crystallization in dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The homochiral nanoclusters in the racemic conglomerates adopt enantiomeric helical self-assemblies (R/L-Ag ₃₀ ). Diverse noncovalent interactions as the driving force in directing superstructure packing were elucidated in detail. Furthermore, the nanoclusters show red luminescence in both solid and solution states, and the racemic conglomerates display a mirror-image CPL response. This work provides atom-precise helical nanoparticle superstructures that facilitate an in-depth understanding of the helical-assembly mechanism.

A small bimetallic Ag3Cu2 nanocluster with dual emissions within and against Kasha's rule

Single crystals of a small bimetallic Ag₃Cu₂ nanocluster protected by six ligands of 2,4-dimethylbenzene thiol are synthesized by a one-pot procedure of wet chemistry. This Ag₃Cu₂ nanocluster bears a trigonal bipyramid metallic core with two copper atoms located on both sides of a triangular Ag₃. Interestingly, the six Cu-Ag side edges of the trigonal bipyramid are fully protected by the six ligands giving rise to reinforced stability and high chemical purity. More interestingly, this Ag₃Cu₂ cluster shows strong dual fluorescence emissions in both ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) and near infrared (NIR) regions. Theoretical calculations reproduce the absorption and fluorescence spectra where the NIR emission at 824 nm is assigned to the S₁→ S₀ transition, while the simultaneous emission in the visible band is due to the radiation of highly excited states and is against Kasha's rule.

Fusion growth patterns in atomically precise metal nanoclusters

Atomically precise nanoclusters of coinage metals in the 1-3 nm size regime have been intensively pursued in recent years. Such nanoclusters are attractive as they fill the gap between small molecules (<1 nm) and regular nanoparticles (>3 nm). This intermediate identity endows nanoclusters with unique physicochemical properties and provides nanochemists opportunities to understand the fundamental science of nanomaterials. Metal nanoparticles are well known to exhibit plasmon resonances upon interaction with light; however, when the particle size is downscaled to the nanocluster regime, the plasmons fade out and step-like absorption spectra characteristic of cluster sizes are manifested due to strong quantum confinement effects. Recent research has revealed that nanoclusters are commonly composed of a distinctive kernel and a surface-protecting shell (or staple-like metal-ligand motifs). Understanding the kernel configuration and evolution is one of the central topics in nanoscience research. This Review summarizes the recent progress in identifying the growth patterns of atomically precise coinage nanoclusters. Several basic kernel units have been observed, such as the M₄, M₁₃ and M₁₄ polyhedrons (where, M = metal atom). Among them, the tetrahedral M₄ and icosahedral M₁₃ units are the most common ones, which are adopted as building blocks to construct larger kernel structures via various fusion or aggregation modes, including the vertex- and face-sharing mode, the double-strand and alternate single-strand growth, and cyclic fusion of units, as well as the fcc-based cubic growth pattern. The identification of the kernel growth pathways has led to deeper understanding of the evolution of electronic structure and optic properties.
