Critical Role of Organic Spacers for Bright 2D Layered Perovskites Light-Emitting Diodes

Organic-inorganic hybrid material for hole transport in inverted perovskite solar cells

Hole mobility is critical to the power conversion efficiencies of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Organic small-molecule hole-transporting materials (HTMs) have attracted considerable interest in PSCs due to their structural flexibility and operational durability, but they suffer from modest hole mobility. On the other hand, inorganic HTMs with good hole mobility are inflexible in structural variation and exhibit unsatisfactory cell efficiency. In this study, a ligand BT28 and its zinc-based coordination complex BTZ30 were synthesized, characterized, and investigated as HTMs for PSC applications. The mixed-halide perovskites can be grown uniformly with large crystalline grains on both HTMs, which exhibit similar optical and electrochemical properties. However, it was discovered that the BTZ30-based solar cell exhibited an open-circuit voltage of 1.0817 V and a high short-circuit current density of 23.1392 mA cm-2 with a champion power conversion efficiency of close to 20 %. The performance difference between the two HTMs can be attributed to the difference in their hole mobilities, which is 63.31 % higher for BTZ30 than BT28. The comparison of non-metal and metal HTMs revealed the importance of considering hybrid structures to overcome some shortcomings associated with organic and inorganic HTMs and achieve high-performance PSCs.

Sub-30 nm 2D Perovskites Patterns via Block Copolymer Guided Self-Assembly for Color Conversion Optical Polarizer

Despite the remarkable advances made in the development of 2D perovskites suitable for various high-performance devices, the development of sub-30 nm nanopatterns of 2D perovskites with anisotropic photoelectronic properties remains challenging. Herein, a simple but robust route for fabricating sub-30 nm 1D nanopatterns of 2D perovskites over a large area is presented. This method is based on nanoimprinting a thin precursor film of a 2D perovskite with a topographically pre-patterned hard poly(dimethylsiloxane) mold replicated from a block copolymer nanopattern consisting of guided self-assembled monolayered in-plane cylinders. 1D nanopatterns of various 2D perovskites (A'2 MAn -1 Pbn X3 n +1 ,A' = BA, PEA, X = Br, I) are developed; their enhanced photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields are approximately four times greater than those of the corresponding control flat films. Anisotropic photocurrent is observed because 2D perovskite nanocrystals are embedded in a topological 1D nanopattern. Furthermore, this 1D metal-coated nanopattern of a 2D perovskite is employed as a color conversion optical polarizer, in which polarized PL is developed. This is due to its capability of polarization of an incident light arising from the sub-30 nm line pattern, as well as the PL of the confined 2D perovskite nanocrystals in the pattern.

Hybrid Double Perovskite Derived Halides Based on Bi and Alkali Metals (K, Rb): Diverse Structures, Tunable Optical Properties and Second Harmonic Generation Responses

Double perovskites (DP) have attracted extensive attention due to their rich structures and wide application prospects in the field of optoelectronics. Here, we report 15 new Bi-based double perovskite derived halides with the general formula of A2 BBiX6 (A=organic cationic ligand, B=K or Rb, X=Br or I). These materials are synthesized using organic ligands to coordinate with metal ions with a sp3 oxygen, and diverse structure types have been obtained with distinct dimensionalities and connectivity modes. The optical band gaps of these phases can be tuned by changing the halide, the organic ligand and the alkali metal, varying from 2.0 to 2.9 eV. The bromide phases exhibit increasing photoluminescence (PL) intensity with decreasing temperature, while the PL intensity of iodide phases changes nonmonotonically with temperature. Because the majority of these phases are non-centrosymmetric, second harmonic generation (SHG) responses are also measured for selected non-centrosymmetric materials, showing different particle-size-dependent trends. Our findings give rise to a series of new structural types to the DP family, and provide a powerful synthetic handle for symmetry breaking.

Asynchronous x-ray multiprobe data acquisition for x-ray transient absorption spectroscopy

Laser pump X-ray Transient Absorption (XTA) spectroscopy offers unique insights into photochemical and photophysical phenomena. X-ray Multiprobe data acquisition (XMP DAQ) is a technique that acquires XTA spectra at thousands of pump-probe time delays in a single measurement, producing highly self-consistent XTA spectral dynamics. In this work, we report two new XTA data acquisition techniques that leverage the high performance of XMP DAQ in combination with High Repetition Rate (HRR) laser excitation: HRR-XMP and Asynchronous X-ray Multiprobe (AXMP). HRR-XMP uses a laser repetition rate up to 200 times higher than previous implementations of XMP DAQ and proportionally increases the data collection efficiency at each time delay. This allows HRR-XMP to acquire more high-quality XTA data in less time. AXMP uses a frequency mismatch between the laser and x-ray pulses to acquire XTA data at a flexibly defined set of pump-probe time delays with a spacing down to a few picoseconds. AXMP introduces a novel pump-probe synchronization concept that acquires data in clusters of time delays. The temporally inhomogeneous distribution of acquired data improves the attainable signal statistics at early times, making the AXMP synchronization concept useful for measuring sub-nanosecond dynamics with photon-starved techniques like XTA. In this paper, we demonstrate HRR-XMP and AXMP by measuring the laser-induced spectral dynamics of dilute aqueous solutions of Fe(CN)₆ ^4- and [Fe^II(bpy)₃]²⁺ (bpy: 2,2'-bipyridine), respectively.

A room-temperature antiferroelectric in hybrid perovskite enables highly efficient energy storage at low electric fields

Molecular antiferroelectrics (AFEs) have taken a booming position in the miniaturization of energy storage devices due to their low critical electric fields. However, regarding intrinsic competitions between dipolar interaction and steric hindrance, it is a challenge to exploit room-temperature molecular AFEs with high energy storage efficiency. Here, we present a new 2D hybrid perovskite-type AFE, (i-BA)₂(FA)Pb₂Br₇ (1), which shows ultrahigh energy storage efficiencies at room temperature. Most strikingly, the typical double P-E hysteresis loops afford an ultrahigh storage efficiency up to ∼91% at low critical electric fields (E _cr = 41 kV cm^-1); this E _cr value is much lower than those of state-of-the-art AFE oxides, revealing the potential of 1 for miniaturized energy-storage devices. In terms of the energy storage mechanism, the dynamic ordering and antiparallel reorientation of organic cations trigger its AFE-type phase transition at 303 K, thus giving a large spontaneous electric polarization of ∼3.7 μC cm^-2, while the increasement of steric hindrance of the organic branched-chain i-BA⁺ spacer cations stabilizes its antipolar sublattices. To the best of our knowledge, this exploration of achieving ultrahigh energy storage efficiency at such a low critical electric field is unprecedented in the AFE family, which paves a pathway for miniaturized energy storage applications.

Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals Assembled in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Stable Blue Light Emitting Diodes

All inorganic cesium lead trihalide nanocrystals are promising light emitters for bright light emitting diodes (LEDs). Here, CsPb(BrCl)1.5 nanocrystals in metal-organic frameworks (MOF) thin films are demonstrated to achieve bright and stable blue LEDs. The lead metal nodes in the MOF thin film react with Cs-halide salts, resulting in 10-20 nm nanocrystals. This is revealed by X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Employing the CsPbX3 -MOF thin films as emission layers, bright deep blue and sky-blue LEDs are demonstrated that emit at 452 and 476 nm respectively. The maximum external quantum efficiencies of these devices are 0.72% for deep blue LEDs and 5.6% for sky blue LEDs. More importantly, the device can maintain 50% of its original electroluminescence (T50 ) for 2.23 h when driving at 4.2 V. Detailed optical spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy suggest that the ion migration can be suppressed that maintains the emission brightness and spectra. The study provides a new route for fabricating stable blue light emitting diodes with all-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals.

Two-dimensional halide perovskites: synthesis, optoelectronic properties, stability, and applications

Halide perovskites are promising materials for light-emitting and light-harvesting applications. In this context, two-dimensional perovskites such as nanoplatelets or Ruddlesden-Popper and Dion-Jacobson layered structures are important because of their structural flexibility, electronic confinement, and better stability. This review article brings forth an extensive overview of the recent developments of two-dimensional halide perovskites both in the colloidal and non-colloidal forms. We outline the strategy to synthesize and control the shape and discuss different crystalline phases and optoelectronic properties. We review the applications of two-dimensional perovskites in solar cells, light-emitting diodes, lasers, photodetectors, and photocatalysis. Besides, we also emphasize the moisture, thermal, and photostability of these materials in comparison to their three-dimensional analogs.

m-Phenylenediammonium as a New Spacer for Dion-Jacobson Two-Dimensional Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites have several distinct structural classes and exhibit great tunability, stability, and high potential for photovoltaic applications. Here, we report a new series of hybrid 2D perovskites in the Dion-Jacobson (DJ) class based on aromatic m-phenylenediammonium (mPDA) dications. The crystal structures of the DJ perovskite materials (mPDA)MA_n-1Pb_nI_3n+1 (n = 1-3) were solved and refined using single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The results indicate a short I···I interlayer distance of 4.00-4.04 Å for the (mPDA)MA_n-1Pb_nI_3n+1 (n = 2 and 3) structures, which is the shortest among DJ perovskites. However, Pb-I-Pb angles are as small as 158-160°, reflecting the large distortion of the inorganic framework, which results in larger band gaps for these materials than those in other DJ analogues. Density functional theory calculations suggest appreciable dispersion in the stacking direction, unlike the band structures of the Ruddlesden-Popper phases, which exhibit flat bands along the stacking direction. This is a consequence of the short interlayer I···I distances that can lead to interlayer electronic coupling across the layers. The solution-deposited films (nominal (mPDA)MA_n-1Pb_nI_3n+1 compositions of n = 1-6) reveal improved surface coverage with increasing nominal n value with the higher n films being composed of a mixture of n = 1 and bulk three-dimensional MAPbI₃ perovskites. The films made from solutions of these materials behave differently from those of other 2D iodide perovskites, and their solar cells have a mixture of n = 1 DJ and MAPbI₃ as light-absorbing semiconductors.

Advances and Challenges in Two-Dimensional Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskites Toward High-Performance Light-Emitting Diodes

Two-dimensional (2D) perovskites are known as one of the most promising luminescent materials due to their structural diversity and outstanding optoelectronic properties. Compared with 3D perovskites, 2D perovskites have natural quantum well structures, large exciton binding energy (E_b) and outstanding thermal stability, which shows great potential in the next-generation displays and solid-state lighting. In this review, the fundamental structure, photophysical and electrical properties of 2D perovskite films were illustrated systematically. Based on the advantages of 2D perovskites, such as special energy funnel process, ultra-fast energy transfer, dense film and low efficiency roll-off, the remarkable achievements of 2D perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are summarized, and exciting challenges of 2D perovskite are also discussed. An outlook on further improving the efficiency of pure-blue PeLEDs, enhancing the operational stability of PeLEDs and reducing the toxicity to push this field forward was also provided. This review provides an overview of the recent developments of 2D perovskite materials and LED applications, and outlining challenges for achieving the high-performance devices.

Low-Dimensional Metal Halide Perovskite Crystal Materials: Structure Strategies and Luminescence Applications

Replacing methylammonium (MA+ ), formamidine (FA+ ), and/or cesium (Cs+ ) in 3D metal halide perovskites by larger organic cations have built a series of low-dimensional metal halide perovskites (LDMHPs) in which the inorganic metal halide octahedra arranging in the forms of 2D layers, 1D chains, and 0D points. These LDMHPs exhibit significantly different optoelectronic properties from 3D metal halide perovskites (MHPs) due to their unique quantum confinement effects and large exciton binding energies. In particular, LDMHPs often have excellent broadband luminescence from self-trapped excitons. Chemical composition, hydrogen bonding, and external factors (temperature and pressure etc.) determine structures and influence photoelectric properties of LDMHPs greatly, and especially it seems that there is no definite regulation to predict the structure and photoelectric properties when a random cation, metal, and halide is chosen to design a LDMHP. Therefore, this review discusses the construction strategies of the recent reported LDMHPs and their application progress in the luminescence field for a better understanding of these factors and a prospect for LDMHPs' development in the future.

Materials, photophysics and device engineering of perovskite light-emitting diodes

Here we provide a comprehensive review of a newly developed lighting technology based on metal halide perovskites (i.e. perovskite light-emitting diodes) encompassing the research endeavours into materials, photophysics and device engineering. At the outset we survey the basic perovskite structures and their various dimensions (namely three-, two- and zero-dimensional perovskites), and demonstrate how the compositional engineering of these structures affects the perovskite light-emitting properties. Next, we turn to the physics underpinning photo- and electroluminescence in these materials through their connection to the fundamental excited states, energy/charge transport processes and radiative and non-radiative decay mechanisms. In the remainder of the review, we focus on the engineering of perovskite light-emitting diodes, including the history of their development as well as an extensive analysis of contemporary strategies for boosting device performance. Key concepts include balancing the electron/hole injection, suppression of parasitic carrier losses, improvement of the photoluminescence quantum yield and enhancement of the light extraction. Overall, this review reflects the current paradigm for perovskite lighting, and is intended to serve as a foundation to materials and device scientists newly working in this field.

Energy-Funneling Process in Quasi-2D Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskites, demonstrating excellent radiative efficiency and facile processability, have been considered as next-generation materials for light-emitting applications. Quasi-2D perovskites with a unique energy-funneling process offer an approach to achieve not only high photoluminescence quantum yields at low excitation but also tunable emission induced by dielectric and quantum confinement. In this Perspective, we highlight the mechanism of the energy-funneling process and discuss the salient position of it in quasi-2D perovskite materials for light-emitting applications; we then present the significance of component and molecular engineering strategies for the energy-funneling process to meet the requirements of stable emission and display technologies. Considering present achievements, we also provide promising directions for future advancements of quasi-2D perovskite materials. We hope this Perspective can provide a new viewpoint for researchers to encourage the commercial progress of quasi-2D perovskites for light-emitting applications.

Photophysics of 2D Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Lead Halide Perovskites: Progress, Debates, and Challenges

2D organic-inorganic hybrid Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (RPPs) have recently attracted increasing attention due to their excellent environmental stability, high degree of electronic tunability, and natural multiquantum-well structures. Although there is a rapid development of photoelectronic applications in solar cells, photodetectors, light emitting diodes (LEDs), and lasers based on 2D RPPs, the state-of-the-art performance is far inferior to that of the existing devices because of the limited understanding on fundamental physics, especially special photophysics in carrier dynamics, excitonic fine structures, excitonic quasiparticles, and spin-related effect. Thus, there is still plenty of room to improve the performances of photoelectronic devices based on 2D RPPs by enhancing knowledge on fundamental photophysics. This review highlights the special photophysics of 2D RPPs that is fundamentally different from the conventional 3D congeners. It also provides the most recent progress, debates, challenges, prospects, and in-depth understanding of photophysics in 2D perovskites, which is significant for not only boosting performance of solar cells, LEDs, photodetectors, but also future development of applications in lasers, spintronics, quantum information, and integrated photonic chips.

High-Efficiency Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes with Improved Interfacial Contact

Unbalanced charge injection is one of the major issues that hampers the efficiency of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). Through engineering the device structure with multiple hole transport layers (HTLs), i.e., poly(9,9-dioctyl-fluorene-co-N-(4-butylphenyl)diphenylamine) (TFB)/poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) and nickel oxide (NiO_x)/TFB/PVK, efficient PeLED devices have been successfully demonstrated. However, in a typical solution-processed PeLED with multiple HTLs, the underlying conjugated HTL could be easily redissolved by the ink of the following one, which not only dramatically deteriorates the electrical property of HTLs but also influences the quality of the top perovskite films. In this work, through inserting a thin atomic layer-deposited aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) layer between HTLs and the perovskite layer, an improved interfacial contact can be achieved, which enables us to obtain perovskite films with enhanced characteristics and balanced charge injection in the resultant PeLEDs. In addition, because of the proper refractive index (r), the presence of the Al₂O₃ layer also favors the light out-coupling of PeLEDs. As a result, we fabricate green PeLEDs with good repeatability and external quantum efficiency of 17.0%, which is approximately 60% higher than that of the control device without Al₂O₃. Our work provides a promising avenue to enhance interfacial contact between the charge transport layer and perovskite for efficient perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.

Direct Spectroscopic Observation of the Hole Polaron in Lead Halide Perovskites

The intrinsic photophysical origin of lead halide perovskites (LHPs) that are used successfully in optolectronic applications remains hotly debated. Here, by using ultrafast X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy, we successfully tracked the fate of photogenerated charge carriers at room temperature within the thin films of two classic LHPs, namely, MAPbBr₃ (MA = CH₃NH₃) and FAPbBr₃ [FA = CH(NH₂)₂]. We clearly observed in both thin films that the hole polaron is formed by localizing the photogenerated hole at the Br 4p orbital and concurrently distorting the local structure surrounding the Br atom after the photoexcitation. Furthermore, the larger FA cation in the cavity of the [PbBr₆]^4- octahedral framework induces a stronger hole polaron effect due to the hybridization of its p orbital into valence and conduction bands, correlating with the slower charge carrier recombination dynamics. Our direct experimental observation of the localized hole polaron in perovskites should advance the fundamental comprehension of charge carrier behavior within LHPs and their related devices.
