Abstract
Tactile sensors play a key role in human-machine interfaces (HMIs) for augmented and virtual reality, point-of-care devices, and human-robot collaboration, which show the promise of revolutionizing our ways of life. Here, we present a sensor (EMTS) that utilizes the magnetoelastic effect in a soft metamaterial to convert mechanical pressure into electrical signals. With this unique mechanism, the proposed EMTS simultaneously possesses self-powering, waterproof, and compliant features. The soft metamaterial is essentially a porous magnetoelastomer structure designed based on the Fourier series expansion, which allows for programmable mechanical response and sensing performance of the EMTS. Fabricated by simple 3D-printed molds, the EMTS also holds potential for low-cost production. Particularly, the porous magnetoelastomer structure comes with selectable buckling instabilities that can significantly enhance biomechanical-to-electrical energy conversion. Also, with the embedded magnetic microparticles, the energy-absorbing performance of the sensor is greatly improved, which is highly beneficial to HMIs. To pursue practical applications, the EMTSs are further integrated with two systems as control and perception modules. It is demonstrated that the EMTS is able to identify different hand gestures to control a lighting system even in a high-humidity environment. Also, the EMTS stands out for its superior capability of simultaneous impact perception and energy absorption in drop tests. Overall, with its compelling array of features, the presented EMTS gives impetus to multi-sensing technology and practically enables a variety of HMI applications.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) is emerging as an eco-friendly method for minimizing waste, as the demand for responsive materials in IoT and Industry 4.0 is on the rise. Magnetoactive composites, which are manufactured through AM, facilitate nonintrusive remote sensing and actuation. Printed magnetoelectric composites are an innovative method that utilizes the synergies between magnetic and electric properties. The study of magnetoelectric effects, including the recently validated piezoinductive effect, demonstrates the generation of electric voltage through external AC and DC magnetic fields. This shift in magnetic sensors, utilizing piezoinductive effect of the piezoelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, eliminates the need for magnetic fillers in printed devices, aligning with sustainability principles, essential for the deployment of IoT and Industry 4.0. The achieved sensitivity surpasses other studies by 100 times, showcasing linear outputs for both applied AC and DC magnetic fields. Additionally, the sensor capitalizes on the linear phase shift of the generated signal with an applied DC magnetic field, an unprecedented effect. Thus, this work introduces a remarkable magnetoactive device with a sensitivity of ST = 95.1 ± 0.9 μV Oe-1 mT-1, a significantly improved performance compared to magnetoelectric devices using polymer composites. As a functional proof of concept of the developed system, a magnetic position sensor has been demonstrated.

Abstract
The connection between laser-based material processing and additive manufacturing is quite deeply rooted. In fact, the spark that started the field of additive manufacturing is the idea that two intersecting laser beams can selectively solidify a vat of resin. Ever since, laser has been accompanying the field of additive manufacturing, with its repertoire expanded from processing only photopolymer resin to virtually any material, allowing liberating customizability. As a result, additive manufacturing is expected to take an even more prominent role in the global supply chain in years to come. Herein, an overview of laser-based selective material processing is presented from various aspects: the physics of laser-material interactions, the materials currently used in additive manufacturing processes, the system configurations that enable laser-based additive manufacturing, and various functional applications of next-generation additive manufacturing. Additionally, current challenges and prospects of laser-based additive manufacturing are discussed.

Abstract
4D printing has attracted tremendous worldwide attention during the past decade. This technology enables the shape, property, or functionality of printed structures to change with time in response to diverse external stimuli, making the original static structures alive. The revolutionary 4D-printing technology offers remarkable benefits in controlling geometric and functional reconfiguration, thereby showcasing immense potential across diverse fields, including biomedical engineering, electronics, robotics, and photonics. Here, a comprehensive review of the latest achievements in 4D printing using various types of materials and different additive manufacturing techniques is presented. The state-of-the-art strategies implemented in harnessing various 4D-printed structures are highlighted, which involve materials design, stimuli, functionalities, and applications. The machine learning approach explored for 4D printing is also discussed. Finally, the perspectives on the current challenges and future trends toward further development in 4D printing are summarized.

Abstract
Integrating sensors and other functional parts in one device can enable a new generation of integrated intelligent devices that can perform self-sensing and monitoring autonomously. Applications include buildings that detect and repair damage, robots that monitor conditions and perform real-time correction and reconstruction, aircraft capable of real-time perception of the internal and external environment, and medical devices and prosthetics with a realistic sense of touch. Although integrating sensors and other functional parts into self-sensing intelligent devices has become increasingly common, additive manufacturing has only been marginally explored. This review focuses on additive manufacturing integrated design, printing equipment, and printable materials and stuctures. The importance of the material, structure, and function of integrated manufacturing are highlighted. The study summarizes current challenges to be addressed and provides suggestions for future development directions.

Abstract
Incorporating perception into robots or objects holds great potential to revolutionize daily human life. To achieve this, critical factors include the design of an integrable three-dimensional (3D) soft sensor with self-powering capability, a wide working range, and tuneable functionalities. Here, we introduce a highly compressible 3D-printed soft magnetoelastic sensor with a wide strain sensing range. Inspired by the lattice metamaterial, which offers a highly porous structure with tuneable mechanical properties, we realized a remarkably compliant 3D self-powering sensor. Using magnetoelastic composite materials and 3D printing combined with sacrificial molding, a broad design space for constituent materials and structures is investigated, allowing for tuneable mechanical properties and sensor performances. These sensors are successfully integrated with two robotic systems as the robot operation and perception units, enabling robot control and recognition of diverse physical interactions with a user. Overall, we believe that this work represents a cornerstone for compliant 3D self-powered soft sensors, giving impetus to the development of advanced human-machine interfaces.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing, widely known as 3D printing, has revolutionized the production of biomaterials. While conventional 3D-printed structures are perceived as static, 4D printing introduces the ability to fabricate materials capable of self-transforming their configuration or function over time in response to external stimuli such as temperature, light, or electric field. This transformative technology has garnered significant attention in the field of biomedical engineering due to its potential to address limitations associated with traditional therapies. Here, we delve into an in-depth review of 4D-printing systems, exploring their diverse biomedical applications and meticulously evaluating their advantages and disadvantages. We emphasize the novelty of this review paper by highlighting the latest advancements and emerging trends in 4D-printing technology, particularly in the context of biomedical applications.

Abstract
An active heterostructure with smart-response material used as "muscle" and inactive material as "skeleton" can deform over time to respond to external stimuli. 4D printing integrated with two-photon polymerization technology and smart material allows the material or characteristic distribution of active heterostructures to be defined directly at the microscale, providing a huge programmable space. However, the high degree of design freedom and the microscale pose a challenge to the construction of micromachines with customized shape morphing. Here, a reverse design strategy based on multi-material stepwise 4D printing is proposed to guide the structural design of biomimetic micromachines. Inspired by the piecewise constant curvature model of soft robot, a reverse design algorithm based on the Timoshenko model is developed. The algorithm can approximate 2D features to a constant-curvature model and determine an acceptable material distribution within the explored printing range. Three Chinese "Long" (Chinese dragon heralds of good fortune) designed by the strategy can deform to the customized shape. In addition, a microcrawler printed using this method can imitate a real inchworm gait. These results demonstrate that this method can be an efficient tool for the action or shape design of bionic soft microrobots or micromachines with predetermined functions.

Abstract
Soft electromagnetic devices have great potential in soft robotics and biomedical applications. However, existing soft-magneto-electrical devices would have limited hybrid functions and suffer from damaging stress concentrations, delamination or material leakage. Here, we report a hybrid magnetic-mechanical-electrical (MME) core-sheath fiber to overcome these challenges. Assisted by the coaxial printing method, the MME fiber can be printed into complex 2D/3D MME structures with integrated magnetoactive and conductive properties, further enabling hybrid functions including programmable magnetization, somatosensory, and magnetic actuation along with simultaneous wireless energy transfer. To demonstrate the great potential of MME devices, precise and minimally invasive electro-ablation was performed with a flexible MME catheter with magnetic control, hybrid actuation-sensing was performed by a durable somatosensory MME gripper, and hybrid wireless energy transmission and magnetic actuation were demonstrated by an untethered soft MME robot. Our work thus provides a material design strategy for soft electromagnetic devices with unexplored hybrid functions.

Abstract
Multi-material additive manufacturing has become a promising trend in fabricating advanced functional architectures due to its controllable design of diverse material species and novel structures. It remains challenging to endow the multi-material components with a mechanical-to-electrical conversion capability. This study reports on multi-material selectively laser sintered magnetoelectric architectures that can convert mechanical energy to electricity in a structure-dependent manner. The principal aim is to establish a relationship between the electrical output and the printed structures by fabricating a series of porous architectures with diverse structural parameters. The findings show that the output voltage increases with the decrease of the elastic modulus and the increase of the magnetic height, which has been analyzed by numerical simulation. Owing to the mechanical-to-electrical conversion capability, a pair of multi-material printed sneakers with the functionalities of power generation and gait analysis has been prepared. The voltage output reaches as high as ≈2 V, which can lighten a light-emitting diode lamp when a user is running. The described solution in this work has offered an exploration framework for the design, fabrication, and application prospects of multi-material additively manufactured architectures.

Abstract
Four-dimensional (4D) printing enables programmable, predictable, and precise shape change of responsive materials to achieve desirable behaviors beyond conventional three-dimensional (3D) printing. However, applying 4D printing to ceramics remains challenging due to their intrinsic brittleness and inadequate stimuli-responsive ability. Here, this work proposes a conceptional combination of bioinspired microstructure design and a programmable prestrain approach for 4D printing of nanoceramics. To overcome the flexibility limitation, the bioinspired concentric cylinder structure in the struts of 3D printed lattices are replicated to develop origami nanoceramic composites with high inorganic content (95 wt%). Furthermore, 4D printing is achieved by applying a programmed prestrain to the printed lattices, enabling the desired deformation when the prestrain is released. Due to the bioinspired concentric cylinder microstructures, the printed flexible nanoceramic composites exhibit superior mechanical performance and anisotropic thermal management capability. Further, by introducing oxygen vacancies to the ceramic nanosheets, conductive nanoceramic composites are prepared with a unique sensing capability for various sensing applications. Hence, this research breaks through the limitation of ceramics in 4D printing and achieves high-performance shape morphing materials for applications under extreme conditions, such as space exploration and high-temperature systems.

Abstract
Self-powered fabric electronic devices are critical for next-generation wearable technologies, biomedical applications, and human-machine interfaces. The flexible magnetoelectric strategy is an emerging self-powered approach that can adapt to diverse environments and yield efficient electric outputs. However, there is an urgent need to develop a continuous manufacturing method for fabricating self-powered sensing magnetoelectric yarns with a high magnetic powder ratio and resistance to severe surroundings. In this study, we report particle flow spinning mass-manufactured magnetoelectric yarns for self-powered mechanical sensing. It has been shown that mechanical stretching/bending forces can be sensed and recognized by magnetoelectric yarns without an additional power supply. Through a combination of parameter optimization experiments and Maxwell modeling, we reveal the mechanism behind this mechanical-to-electric conversion capability. We further show that these self-powered sensing magnetoelectric yarns can monitor human motions after being attached to texture clothing. We expect that our results will stimulate further research on fabric electronics in a self-powered manner and will substantially advance the field.

Abstract
The low productivity of typical 3D printing is a major hurdle for its utilization in large-scale manufacturing. Innovative techniques have been developed to break the limitation of printing speed, however, sophisticated facilities or costly consumables are required, which still substantially restricts the economic efficiency. Here we report that a common stereolithographic 3D printing facility can achieve a very high printing speed (400 mm/h) using a green and inexpensive hydrogel as a separation interface against the cured part. In sharp contrast to other techniques, the unique separation mechanism relies on the large recoverable deformation along the thickness direction of the hydrogel interface during the layer-wise printing. The hydrogel needs to be extraordinarily soft and unusually thick to remarkably reduce the adhesion force which is a key factor for achieving rapid 3D printing. This technique shows excellent printing stability even for fabricating large continuous solid structures, which is extremely challenging for other rapid 3D printing techniques. The printing process is highly robust for fabricating diversified materials with various functions. With the advantages mentioned above, the presented technique is believed to make a large impact on large-scale manufacturing.

Abstract
Components fabricated by four-dimensional (4D) printing hold the potential for applications in soft robotics because of their characteristics of responding to external stimuli. Grippers, being the common structures used in robotics, were fabricated by the selective laser sintering (SLS)-based 4D printing of magnetism-responsive materials and tested for remote-controllable deformation in an external magnetic field. A composite material consisting of magnetic Nd2Fe14B powder and thermoplastic polyurethane powder was selected as the raw material for the SLS; the magnetic particle acquired permanent magnetism by magnetization after the SLS process. Microscopic characterization showed the homogeneous dispersion of magnetic particles inside the polymer matrix. The magnetic induction intensity distribution was systematically investigated by both experiments and numerical simulations. The reliability of the numerical model proposed was justified by the excellent consistency between them. The deformation of the grippers could be regulated by tuning the magnetic particle content and the distance from the external magnet; the deformation mechanism is investigated numerically. The magnetic driving force and the corresponding horizontal displacement are calculated, thus having high accuracy compared with the existing research that obtained the deformation amount by only visual inspection. Mechanical properties of the SLS-fabricated magnetic polymer composite specimens were also studied because of their close relationship with the deformation behaviors. These findings provide guidance for future research on controllable deformation and driving force calculation for 4D printing.

Abstract
In this work, new films containing composite materials based on blends of thermoplastic polymers of the polyurethane (TPU) and polyolefin (TPO) type, in the absence and presence of BaTiO3 nanoparticles (NPs) with the size smaller 100 nm, were prepared. The vibrational properties of the free films depending on the weight ratio of the two thermoplastic polymers were studied. Our results demonstrate that these films are optically active, with strong, broad, and adjustable photoluminescence by varying the amount of TPU. The crystalline structure of BaTiO3 and the influence of thermoplastic polymers on the crystallization process of these inorganic NPs were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The vibrational changes induced in the thermoplastic polymer's matrix of the BaTiO3 NPs were showcased by Raman scattering and FTIR spectroscopy. The incorporation of BaTiO3 NPs in the matrix of thermoplastic elastomers revealed the shift dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) band depending on the BaTiO3 NP concentration, which was capable of covering a wide visible spectral range. The dependencies of the dielectric relaxation phenomena with the weight of BaTiO3 NPs in thermoplastic polymers blends were also demonstrated.
