The Challenge of Superhydrophobicity: Environmentally Facilitated Cassie-Wenzel Transitions and Structural Design

Superhydrophobic materials can be used in various fields to optimize production and life due to their unique surface wetting properties. However, under certain pressure and perturbation conditions, the droplets deposited on superhydrophobic materials are prone to change from Cassie state to Wenzel state, which limits the practical applications of the materials. In recent years, a large number of works have investigated the transition behavior, transition mechanism, and influencing factors of the wetting transition that occurs when a superhydrophobic surface is under a series of external environments. Based on these works, in this paper, the phenomenon and kinetic behavior of the destruction of the Cassie state and the mechanism of the wetting transition are systematically summarized under external conditions that promote the wetting transition on the material surface, including pressure, impact, evaporation, vibration, and electric wetting. In addition, superhydrophobic surface morphology has been shown to directly affect the duration of the Cassie state. Based on the published work the effects of specific morphology on the Cassie state, including structural size, structural shape, and structural level, are summarized in this paper from theoretical analyses and experimental data.

Mobility Selective Ion Soft-Landing and Characterization Enabled Using Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulation

While conventional ion-soft landing uses the mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio to achieve molecular selection for deposition, here we demonstrate the use of Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulation (SLIM) for mobility-based ion selection and deposition. The dynamic rerouting capabilities of SLIM were leveraged to enable the rerouting of a selected range of mobilities to a different SLIM path (rather than MS) that terminated at a deposition surface. A selected mobility range from a phosphazene ion mixture was rerouted and deposited with a current pulse (∼150 pA) resembling its mobility peak. In addition, from a mixture of tetra-alkyl ammonium (TAA) ions containing chain lengths of C5-C8, selected chains (C6, C7) were collected on a surface, reconstituted into solution-phase, and subsequently analyzed with a SLIM-qToF to obtain an IMS/MS spectrum, confirming the identity of the selected species. Further, this method was used to characterize triply charged tungsten-polyoxometalate anions, PW12O403- (WPOM). The arrival time distribution of the IMS/MS showed multiple peaks associated with the triply charged anion (PW12O403-), of which a selected ATD was deposited and imaged using TEM. Additionally, the identity of the deposited WPOM was ascertained using energy-dispersive (EDS) spectroscopy. Further, we present theory and computations that reveal ion landing energies, the ability to modulate the energies, and deposition spot sizes.

Singular jets during droplet impact on superhydrophobic surfaces

HYPOTHESIS

The impact of droplets is prevalent in numerous applications, and jetting during droplet impact is a critical process controlling the dispersal and transport of liquid. New jetting dynamics are expected in different conditions of droplet impact on super-hydrophobic surfaces, such as new jetting phenomena, mechanisms, and regimes.

EXPERIMENTS

In this experimental study of droplet impact on super-hydrophobic surfaces, the Weber number and the Ohnesorge number are varied in a wide range, and the impact process is analyzed theoretically.

FINDINGS

We identify a new type of singular jets, i.e., singular jets induced by horizontal inertia (HI singular jets), besides the previously studied singular jets induced by capillary deformation (CD singular jets). For CD singular jets, the formation of the cavity is due to the propagation of capillary waves on the droplet surface; while for HI singular jets, the cavity formation is due to the large horizontal inertia of the toroidal edge during the retraction of the droplet after the maximum spreading. Key steps of the impact process are analyzed quantitatively, including the spreading of the droplet, the formation and the collapse of the spire, the formation and retraction of the cavity, and finally the formation of singular jets. A regime map for the formation of singular jets is obtained, and scaling relationships for the transition conditions between different regimes are analyzed.

Jetting Dynamics of Viscous Droplets on Superhydrophobic Surfaces

We investigated the dynamics of liquid jets engendered by the impact of droplets on a fractal superhydrophobic surface. Depending on the impact conditions, jets emanate from the free liquid surface with several different shapes and velocities, sometimes accompanied by droplet ejection. Experimental outcomes exhibit two different regimes: the singular jet and columnar jet. We found that droplet impacts at a lower impact velocity and low viscosity result in singular jets, attaining a maximum velocity nearly 20-fold higher than the impact velocity. The high-speed video frames reveal that the formation and subsequent collapse of the cylindrical air cavities within the droplet favor the formation of these high-speed singular jets. In contrast, the capillary wave focusing engenders columnar jets at a moderate to high impact velocity. With an increase in viscosity, singular jets are suppressed at lower impact velocities, whereas columnar jets are seen regularly. The columnar jets ascend and grow over time, feeding a bulbous mass, and subsequently the bulb separates itself from the parent jet due to capillary pinch-off phenomena. The quantitative analysis shows that columnar jets' top jet drop size varies nonmonotonically and is influenced by preceding jetting dynamics. At moderate viscosity, the drop size varies with jet velocity, following a power-law scaling. At very high viscosities, both singular and columnar jetting events are inhibited. The results are relevant to several recent technologies, including microdispensing, thermal management, and disease transmission.

Suppression of droplet pinch-off by early onset of interfacial instability

HYPOTHESIS

Interfacial instabilities cause undesirable droplet breakage during impact. Such breakage affects many applications, such as printing, spraying, etc. Particle coating over a droplet can significantly change the impact process and stabilize it against breakage. This work investigates the impact dynamics of particle-coated droplets, which mostly remains unexplored.

EXPERIMENTS

Particle-coated droplets of different mass loading were formed using volume addition. The prepared droplets were impacted on superhydrophobic surfaces, and their dynamics were recorded using a high-speed camera.

FINDINGS

We report an intriguing phenomenon where an interfacial fingering instability helps suppress pinch-off in particle-coated droplets. This island of breakage suppression, where the droplet maintains its intactness upon impact, appears in a regime of Weber numbers where bare droplet breakage is inevitable. The onset of fingering instability in particle-coated droplets is observed at much lower impact energy, around two times less than the bare droplet. The instability is characterized and explained using the rim Bond number. The instability suppresses pinch-off because of the higher losses associated with the formation of stable fingers. Such instability can also be seen in dust/pollen-covered surfaces, making it useful in many applications related to cooling, self-cleaning, anti-icing etc.

Overflow Control for Sustainable Development by Superwetting Surface with Biomimetic Structure

Liquid flowing around a solid edge, i.e., overflow, is a commonly observed flow behavior. Recent research into surface wetting properties and microstructure-controlled overflow behavior has attracted much attention. Achieving controllable macroscale liquid dynamics by manipulating the micro-nanoscale liquid overflow has stimulated diverse scientific interest and fostered widespread use in practical applications. In this review, we outline the evolution of overflow and present a critical survey of the mechanism of surface wetting properties and microstructure-controlled liquid overflow in multilength scales ranging from centimeter to micro and even nanoscale. We summarize the latest progress in utilizing the mechanisms to manipulate liquid overflow and achieve macroscale liquid dynamics and in emerging applications to manipulate overflow for sustainable development in various fields, along with challenges and perspectives.

Superhydrophobic Strategy for Nature-Inspired Rotating Microfliers: Enhancing Spreading, Reducing Contact Time, and Weakening Impact Force of Raindrops

Wind-dispersal of seeds is a remarkable strategy in nature, enlightening the construction of microfliers for environmental monitoring. However, the flight of these microfliers is greatly affected by climatic conditions, especially in rainy days, they suffer serious raindrop impact. Here, a hierarchical superhydrophobic surface is fabricated and a novel strategy is demonstrated that the superhydrophobic coating can enhance spreading while reduce contact time and impact force of raindrops, all of which are beneficial for the rotating microfliers. When the surface rotating speed exceeds a critical value, the effect of centrifugal force becomes considerable so that the droplet spreading is enhanced. The rotating superhydrophobic surface can rotate an impacting droplet by the tangential drag force from the air boundary layer, and the rotation of the droplet generates a negative pressure zone inside it, reducing the contact time by more than 30%. The impact force by the droplet on the rotating superhydrophobic surface also has a remarkable reduction of 53% compared to that on unprocessed hydrophilic surfaces, which helps maintain the flight stability of the microfliers. This work pioneers in revealing the droplet impact effect on rotating microflier surfaces and demonstrates the effectiveness of protecting microfliers with superhydrophobic coatings, which shall guide the manufacture and flight of microfliers in rainy conditions.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Nanodroplets Impacting Stripe-Textured Surfaces

The dynamic behavior of droplets impacting on textured surfaces has an important influence on many engineering applications, such as anti-icing and self-cleaning. However, the mechanism and law of the effect of textured surfaces on the impact behavior of nanodroplets has not been fully revealed yet. In this paper, the molecular dynamics (MD) method is used to model the dynamic behavior of nanodroplets after impacting the solid surface with a striped texture. The influences of texture gap and texture angle on the real contact area, spreading factor, contact time, and bounce velocity of the droplet after impact are also quantitatively analyzed. It is shown that the striped texture produces significant anisotropy in the spreading and contraction behavior of nanodroplets after impact, and the anisotropy is more pronounced on the ridged texture surface than on the grooved texture surface. In addition, we find that the texture gap has little effect on the dynamic behavior of nanodroplets impacting the textured surface. However, as the bottom angle of the texture increases, the real contact area and bounce velocity of the nanodroplet increase significantly, while the contact time and spreading factor decrease. This work further elucidates the characteristics and mechanisms of nanodroplets impacting on stripe-textured surfaces and provides a theoretical basis for the design of nanostructured surfaces in relevant applications.

Successive Rebounds of Impinging Water Droplets on Superhydrophobic Surfaces

When a water droplet strikes a superhydrophobic surface, there may be several to a few tens of rebounds before it comes to rest. Although this intriguing multiphase flow phenomenon has received a great deal of attention from interfacial scientists and engineers, the underlying dynamics have not yet been completely resolved. In this paper, we report on an experimental investigation into the bouncing behavior of water droplets impinging on macroscopically flat superhydrophobic surfaces. We show that the restitution coefficient, which quantifies the energy consumed during impact and rebound, exhibits a nonmonotonic dependence on the Weber number. It is the droplet-surface friction that restricts the rebound height of the impinging droplet, so its restitution coefficient increases with the Weber number when the impact velocity is below a critical value. Above this value, the viscous friction within a thin liquid layer close to the superhydrophobic surface becomes dominant, and thus, the restitution coefficient decreases sharply. On the basis of energy analyses, semiempirical formulas are proposed to describe the restitution coefficient, and these can be employed to predict the number of successive rebounds of impinging droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces.

Exploiting Molecular Dynamics in Composite Coatings to Design Robust Super-Repellent Surfaces

Fluorinated motifs are promising for the engineering of repellent coatings, however, a fundamental understanding of how to effectively bind these motifs to various substrates is required to improve their stability in different use scenarios. Herein, the binding of fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) using a cyanoacrylate glue (binder) is computationally and experimentally evaluated. The composite POSS-binder coatings display ultralow surface energy (≈10 mJ m-2 ), while still having large surface adhesions to substrates (300-400 nN), highlighting that super-repellent coatings (contact angles >150°) can be readily generated with this composite approach. Importantly, the coatings show super-repellency to both corrosive liquids (e.g., 98 wt% H2 SO4 ) and ultralow surface tension liquids (e.g., alcohols), with ultralow roll-off angles (<5°), and tunable resistance to liquid penetration. Additionally, these coatings demonstrate the potential in effective cargo loading and robust self-cleaning properties, where experimental datasets are correlated with both relevant theoretical predictions and systematic all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of the repellent coatings. This work not only holds promise for chemical shielding, heat transfer, and liquid manipulations but offers a facile yet robust pathway for engineering advanced coatings by effectively combining components for their mutually desired properties.
