Epitaxial III-V/Si Vertical Heterostructures with Hybrid 2D-Semimetal/Semiconductor Ambipolar and Photoactive Properties

A TiO2 nanorod and perylene diimide based inorganic/organic nanoheterostructure photoanode for photoelectrochemical urea oxidation

Visible light-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) urea oxidation using inorganic/organic nano-heterostructure (NH) photoanodes is an attractive method for hydrogen (H2) production. In this article, inorganic/organic NHs (TiO2/PDIEH) consisting of a N,N-bis(2-ethylhexyl)perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (PDIEH) thin layer over TiO2 nanorods (NRs) were fabricated for the PEC urea oxidation reaction (UOR). In these NHs, a PDIEH layer was anchored on TiO2 NR arrays using the spin-coating technique, which is beneficial for the uniform deposition of PDIEH on TiO2 NRs. Uniform deposition facilitated adequate interface contact between PDIEH and TiO2 NRs. TiO2/PDIEH NHs achieved a high current density of 1.1 mA cm-2 at 1.96 VRHE compared to TiO2 NRs. TiO2/PDIEH offers long-term stability under light illumination with 90.21% faradaic efficiency. TiO2/PDIEH exhibits a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 0.52%. This outcome opens up new opportunities for inorganic/organic NHs for high-performance PEC urea oxidation.

A review on functional nanoarchitectonics nanocomposites based on octahedral metal atom clusters (Nb6, Mo6, Ta6, W6, Re6): inorganic 0D and 2D powders and films

This review is dedicated to various functional nanoarchitectonic nanocomposites based on molecular octahedral metal atom clusters (Nb₆, Mo₆, Ta₆, W₆, Re₆). Powder and film nanocomposites with two-dimensional, one-dimensional and zero-dimensional morphologies are presented, as well as film matrices from organic polymers to inorganic layered oxides. The high potential and synergetic effects of these nanocomposites for biotechnology applications, photovoltaic, solar control, catalytic, photonic and sensor applications are demonstrated. This review also provides a basic level of understanding how nanocomposites are characterized and processed using different techniques and methods. The main objective of this review would be to provide guiding significance for the design of new high-performance nanocomposites based on transition metal atom clusters.

Robust Porous WC-Based Self-Supported Ceramic Electrodes for High Current Density Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Developing an economical, durable, and efficient electrode that performs well at high current densities and is capable of satisfying large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production is highly demanded. A self-supported electrocatalytic "Pt-like" WC porous electrode with open finger-like holes is produced through industrial processes, and a tightly bonded nitrogen-doped WC/W (WC-N/W) heterostructure is formed in situ on the WC grains. The obtained WC-N/W electrode manifests excellent durability and stability under multi-step current density in the range of 30-1000 mA cm-2 for more than 220 h in both acidic and alkaline media. Although WC is three orders of magnitude cheaper than Pt, the produced electrode demonstrates comparable hydrogen evolution reaction performance to the Pt electrode at high current density. Density functional theory calculations attribute its superior performance to the electrode structure and the modulated electronic structure at the WC-N/W interface.

Electrochemiluminescence with semiconductor (nano)materials

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is the light production triggered by reactions at the electrode surface. Its intrinsic features based on a dual electrochemical/photophysical nature have made it an attractive and powerful method across diverse fields in applied and fundamental research. Herein, we review the combination of ECL with semiconductor (SC) materials presenting various typical dimensions and structures, which has opened new uses of ECL and offered exciting opportunities for (bio)sensing and imaging. In particular, we highlight this particularly rich domain at the interface between photoelectrochemistry, SC material chemistry and analytical chemistry. After an introduction to the ECL and SC fundamentals, we gather the recent advances with representative examples of new strategies to generate ECL in original configurations. Indeed, bulk SC can be used as electrode materials with unusual ECL properties or light-addressable systems. At the nanoscale, the SC nanocrystals or quantum dots (QDs) constitute excellent bright ECL nano-emitters with tuneable emission wavelengths and remarkable stability. Finally, the challenges and future prospects are discussed for the design of new detection strategies in (bio)analytical chemistry, light-addressable systems, imaging or infrared devices.
