A Lamellar Yolk-Shell Lithium-Sulfur Battery Cathode Displaying Ultralong Cycling Life, High Rate Performance, and Temperature Tolerance

Ultralong-life and high-capacity magnesium/sodium hybrid-ion battery using a ternary CoSe/NiSe2/CuSe2 cathode and dual-ion electrolyte

An ultrahigh-performance magnesium/sodium hybrid-ion battery (MNHB) is developed using ternary CoSe/NiSe2/CuSe2 (CNCS) "micro-flowers" as cathode materials, working with a coordinative [Mg2Cl2][AlCl4]2 and bis(trifluoroethylsulfonyl)imide anionic sodium salt in triglyme electrolyte. After 2000 cycles at 2.0 A g-1, the MNHB shows a stable capacity of 115.5 mA h g-1 and a high Coulombic efficiency exceeding 99.8%. The battery shows very rapid charging, and good stability in extreme environments, providing new opportunities to develop other hybrid-ion systems.

A Room-Temperature Self-Healing Liquid Metal-Infilled Microcapsule Driven by Coaxial Flow Focusing for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anode

Liquid metals have attracted a lot of attention as self-healing materials in many fields. However, their applications in secondary batteries are challenged by electrode failure and side reactions due to the drastic volume changes during the "liquid-solid-liquid" transition. Herein, a simple encapsulated, mass-producible method is developed to prepare room-temperature liquid metal-infilled microcapsules (LMMs) with highly conductive carbon shells as anodes for lithium-ion batteries. Due to the reasonably designed voids in the microcapsule, the liquid metal particles (LMPs) can expand freely without damaging the electrode structure. The LMMs-based anodes exhibit superior capacity of rete-performance and ultra-long cycling stability remaining 413 mAh g-1 after 5000 cycles at 5.0 A g-1. Ex situ X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) reveal that the LMMs anode displays a stable alloying/de-alloying mechanism. DFT calculations validate the electronic structure and stability of the room-temperature LMMs system. These findings will bring some new opportunities to develop high-performance battery systems.

Encapsulating Sulfur into a Gel-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Mesoporous and Microporous Carbon Sponge for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The practical application of Li-S batteries (LSBs) has long been impeded by the inefficient utilization of sulfur and slow kinetics. Utilizing conductive carbonaceous frameworks as a host scaffold presents an efficient and cost-effective approach to enhance sulfur utilization for redox reactions in LSBs. However, the interaction of pure carbon materials with lithium polysulfide intermediates (LiPSs) is limited to weak van der Waals forces. Hence, the development of an economical method for synthesizing heteroatom-doped carbon materials for sulfur fixation is of paramount importance. In this study, we introduce a hierarchical porous nitrogen-doped carbon sponge (NPCS) with an exceptionally high BET surface area of 3182.2 m2 g-1, achieved through a facile template-assisted polymerization method. The incorporation of inorganic salts, free radical polymerization, and deuteric freeze-drying techniques facilitates the formation of hierarchical pores within the NPCS. After sulfur fixation, the resulting S/NPCS electrode demonstrates remarkable electrochemical performance in LSBs. Specifically, it achieves an 80% sulfur utilization rate, maintains a high reversible specific capacity of 400 mA h g-1 even after 600 cycles at a demanding current density of 5.0 A g-1, and exhibits superior rate capability. It is believed that this work will inspire the rational design of cost-effective carbon-based electrodes for high-performance LSBs.

High-Rate Lithium-Selenium Batteries Boosted by a Multifunctional Janus Separator Over a Wide Temperature Range of -30 °C to 60 °C

Lithium-selenium batteries are characterized by high volumetric capacity comparable to Li-S batteries, while ≈1025 times higher electrical conductivity of Se than S is favorable for high-rate capability. However, they also suffer from the "shuttling effect" of lithium polyselenides (LPSes) and Li dendrite growth. Herein, a multifunctional Janus separator is designed by coating hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages (hNCNC) and AlN nanowires on two sides of commercial polypropylene (PP) separator to overcome these hindrances. At room temperature, the Li-Se batteries with the Janus separator exhibit an unprecedented high-rate capability (331 mAh g-1 at 25 C) and retain a high capacity of 408 mAh g-1 at 3 C after 500 cycles. Moreover, the high retained capacities are achieved over a wide temperature range from -30 °C to 60 °C, showing the potential application under extreme environments. The excellent performances result from the "1+1>2" synergism of suppressed LPSes shuttling by chemisorption and electrocatalysis of hNCNC on the cathode side and suppressed Li-dendrite growth by thermally conductive AlN-network on the anode side, which can be well understood by the "Bucket Effect". This Janus separator provides a general strategy to develop high-performance lithium-chalcogen (Se, S, SeS2 ) batteries.

ZIF-67-derived Co/CoSe ultrafine nanocrystal Schottky heterojunction decorated hollow carbon nanospheres as new-type anodes for potassium-ion batteries

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have the advantages of controllable chemical properties, rich pore structures and reaction sites and are expected to be high-performance anode materials for the next generation of potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). However, due to the large radius of potassium ions, the pure MOF crystal structure is prone to collapse during ion insertion and processing, so its electrochemical performance is quite limited. In this work, a hollow carbon sphere-supported MOF-derived Co/CoSe heterojunction anode material for potassium-ion batteries was developed by a hydrothermal method. The anode has high potassium storage capacity (461.9 mA h/g after 200 cycles at 1 A/g), excellent cycling stability and superior rate performance. It is worth noting that the potassium ion storage capacity of the anode material shows a gradual upward trend with the charge-discharge cycle, which is 145.9 mA h/g after 3000 cycles at a current density of 10 A/g. This work demonstrates that MOF-derived CoSe anodes with high capacity and low cost may be promising candidates for the introduction of potassium ion storage.

Recent Development in Novel Lithium-Sulfur Nanofiber Separators: A Review of the Latest Fabrication and Performance Optimizations

Lithium-Sulfur batteries (LSBs) are one of the most promising next-generation batteries to replace Li-ion batteries that power everything from small portable devices to large electric vehicles. LSBs boast a nearly five times higher theoretical capacity than Li-ion batteries due to sulfur's high theoretical capacity, and LSBs use abundant sulfur instead of rare metals as their cathodes. In order to make LSBs commercially viable, an LSB's separator must permit fast Li-ion diffusion while suppressing the migration of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). Polyolefin separators (commonly used in Li-ion batteries) fail to block LiPSs, have low thermal stability, poor mechanical strength, and weak electrolyte affinity. Novel nanofiber (NF) separators address the aforementioned shortcomings of polyolefin separators with intrinsically superior properties. Moreover, NF separators can easily be produced in large volumes, fine-tuned via facile electrospinning techniques, and modified with various additives. This review discusses the design principles and performance of LSBs with exemplary NF separators. The benefits of using various polymers and the effects of different polymer modifications are analyzed. We also discuss the conversion of polymer NFs into carbon NFs (CNFs) and their effects on rate capability and thermal stability. Finally, common and promising modifiers for NF separators, including carbon, metal oxide, and metal-organic framework (MOF), are examined. We highlight the underlying properties of the composite NF separators that enhance the capacity, cyclability, and resilience of LSBs.

A Porous Hexagonal Prism Shaped C-In2-xCoxO3 Electrocatalyst to Expedite Bidirectional Polysulfide Redox in Li-S Batteries

The shuttling behavior of soluble lithium polysulfides (LPSs) extremely restricts the practical application of lithium sulfur batteries (Li-S batteries). Herein, the hollow porous hexagonal prism shaped C-In_2-xCo_xO₃ composite is synthesized to restrain the shuttle effect and accelerate reaction kinetics of LPSs. The novel hexagonal prism porous carbon skeleton not only provides a stable physical framework for sulfur active materials but also facilitates efficient electron transferring and lithium ion diffusion. Meanwhile, the polar In_2-xCo_xO₃ is equipped with strong adsorption capacity for LPSs, which is confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, helping to anchor LPSs. More importantly, the doping of Co regulates the electronic structure environment of In₂O₃, expedites the electron transmission, and bidirectionally improves the catalytic conversion ability of LPSs and nucleation-decomposition of Li₂S. Benefiting from the above advantages, the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries has been greatly enhanced. Therefore, the C-In_2-xCo_xO₃ cathode presents a good rate performance, which exhibits a low-capacity fading rate of 0.052% per cycle over 800 cycles at 5 C. Especially, even under a high sulfur loading of 4.8 mg cm^-2, the initial specific capacity is as high as 903 mAh g^-1, together with a superior capacity retention of 85.6% after 600 cycles at 0.5 C.
