Heterointerface Engineering of Hierarchically Assembling Layered Double Hydroxides on Cobalt Selenide as Efficient Trifunctional Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting and Zinc-Air Battery

Heterostructure Engineering of NiCo-LDHs for Enhanced Energy Storage Performance in Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered a promising device for next-generation energy storage due to their high safety and low cost. However, developing high-performance cathodes that can be matched with zinc metal anodes remains a challenge in unlocking the full potential of AZIBs. In this study, a typical transition metal layered double hydroxides (NiCo-LDHs) can be in situ reconstructed to NiCo-LDHs/Ni(Co)OOH heterostructure using an electrochemical cycling activation (ECA) method, serving as a novel cathode material for AZIBs. The optimized ECA-NiCo-LDHs cathode demonstrates a high capacity of 181.5 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 and retains 75% of initial capacity after 700 cycles at 5 A g-1. The abundant heterointerfaces of the NiCo-LDHs/Ni(Co)OOH material can activate additional active sites for zinc-ion storage and accelerate ion diffusion. Theoretical calculations also suggest the heterostructure can boost charge transfer and regulate ion-adsorption capability, thereby improving the electrochemical performance. Additionally, the flexible AZIBs device exhibits good service performance. This study on interface engineering introduces a new possibility for utilizing LDHs in AZIBs and offers a novel strategy for designing electrode materials.

Enhancing interfacial electron transfer through PANI electron bridge for tailoring dynamic reconstruction and achieving high-performance water oxidation

Tailoring the dynamic reconstruction of transition metal compounds into highly active oxyhydroxides through surface electron state modification is crucial for advancing water oxidation, yet remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a unique polyaniline (PANI) electron bridge was integrated into the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)/layer double hydroxides (LDHs) heterojunction to expedite electron transfer from MOFs to LDHs, facilitating electron accumulation at the metal sites within MOF and electron-deficient LDHs. This configuration promotes the surface dynamic reconstruction of LDHs into highly active oxyhydroxides while safeguarding the MOF from corrosion in harsh environments over extended periods. The optimized electronic structure modification of both MOFs and LDHs enhances reaction kinetics. The superior MIL-88B(Fe)@PANI@NiCo LDH catalyst achieved 10 mA∙cm-2 at an overpotential of 202 mV and demonstrated stable operation for 120 h at this current density. This research introduces an innovative approach for guiding electron transfer and dynamic catalyst reconstruction by constructing a PANI electron bridge, potentially paving the way for more efficient catalytic systems.

High-Performance Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Flexible and Rechargeable Zn-Air Batteries: Recent Advances

Flexible rechargeable Zn-air batteries (FZABs) exhibit high energy density, ultra-thin, lightweight, green, and safe features, and are considered as one of the ideal power sources for flexible wearable electronics. However, the slow and high overpotential oxygen reaction at the air cathode has become one of the key factors restricting the development of FZABs. The improvement of activity and stability of bifunctional catalysts has become a top priority. At the same time, FZABs should maintain the battery performance under different bending and twisting conditions, and the design of the overall structure of FZABs is also important. Based on the understanding of the three typical configurations and working principles of FZABs, this work highlights two common strategies for applying bifunctional catalysts to FZABs: 1) powder-based flexible air cathode and 2) flexible self-supported air cathode. It summarizes the recent advances in bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts and explores the various types of catalyst structures as well as the related mechanistic understanding. Based on the latest catalyst research advances, this paper introduces and discusses various structure modulation strategies and expects to guide the synthesis and preparation of efficient bifunctional catalysts. Finally, the current status and challenges of bifunctional catalyst research in FZABs are summarized.

Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction on Metallic CoNi-Terminated Catalyst with Industrial-Level Current Density in Neutral Medium

Green ammonia synthesis through electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (eNO3RR) can serve as an effective alternative to the traditional energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. However, achieving high Faradaic efficiency (FE) at industrially relevant current density in neutral medium poses significant challenges in eNO3RR. Herein, with the guidance of theoretical calculation, a metallic CoNi-terminated catalyst is successfully designed and constructed on copper foam, which achieves an ammonia FE of up to 100% under industrial-level current density and very low overpotential (-0.15 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode) in a neutral medium. Multiple characterization results have confirmed that the maintained metal atom-terminated surface through interaction with copper atoms plays a crucial role in reducing overpotential and achieving high current density. By constructing a homemade gas stripping and absorption device, the complete conversion process for high-purity ammonium nitrate products is demonstrated, displaying the potential for practical application. This work suggests a sustainable and promising process toward directly converting nitrate-containing pollutant solutions into practical nitrogen fertilizers.

Nickel-Induced charge transfer in semicoherent Co-Ni/Co6Mo6C Heterostructures for reversible oxygen electrocatalysis

To achieve high-performance Zn-air batteries (ZABs), the development of bifunctional air electrodes capable of efficiently mediating both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is imperative. In this study, we present an N-doped carbon hollow nanorod encapsulating a semi-coherent Co-Ni/Co6Mo6C heterojunction, tailored for reversible oxygen catalysis. This nanohybrid demonstrated an ORR half-wave potential of 0.907 V alongside an OER overpotential of η10 = 352 mV. When incorporated into ZABs, this catalyst exhibited extraordinary performance metrics, including a high-power density of 343.7 mW/cm2, a specific capacity of 681 mAh/gZn, and enhanced durability. The distinctive electric field within the heterojunction facilitated electron transfer across the semi-coherent interface during reversible oxygen electrocatalysis, enhancing the adsorption and release of active intermediates. Thus, this heightened ORR-OER catalytic efficiency culminated in superior ZABs performance. Our findings afford a pivotal design paradigm for the advancement of productive bifunctional catalysts within the field of energy conversion technologies.

Plasma-Engineering of Oxygen Vacancies on NiCo2O4 Nanowires with Enhanced Bifunctional Electrocatalytic Performance for Rechargeable Zinc-air Battery

Designing an efficient, durable, and inexpensive bifunctional electrocatalyst toward oxygen evolution reactions (OER) and oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) remains a significant challenge for the development of rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). The generation of oxygen vacancies plays a vital role in modifying the surface properties of transition-metal-oxides (TMOs) and thus optimizing their electrocatalytic performances. Herein, a H2/Ar plasma is employed to generate abundant oxygen vacancies at the surfaces of NiCo2O4 nanowires. Compared with the Ar plasma, the H2/Ar plasma generated more oxygen vacancies at the catalyst surface owing to the synergic effect of the Ar-related ions and H-radicals in the plasma. As a result, the NiCo2O4 catalyst treated for 7.5 min in H2/Ar plasma exhibited the best bifunctional electrocatalytic activities and its gap potential between Ej = 10 for OER and E1/2 for ORR is even smaller than that of the noble-metal-based catalyst. In situ electrochemical experiments are also conducted to reveal the proposed mechanisms for the enhanced electrocatalytic performance. The rechargeable ZABs, when equipped with cathodes utilizing the aforementioned catalyst, achieved an outstanding charge-discharge gap, as well as superior cycling stability, outperforming batteries employing noble-metal catalyst counterparts.

Recent Advances in Catalyst Design and Performance Optimization of Nanostructured Cathode Materials in Zinc-Air Batteries

This review focuses on the advanced design and optimization of nanostructured zinc-air batteries (ZABs), with the aim of boosting their energy storage and conversion capabilities. The findings show that ZABs favor porous nanostructures owing to their large surface area, and this enhances the battery capacity, catalytic activity, and life cycle. In addition, the nanomaterials improve the electrical conductivity, ion transport, and overall battery stability, which crucially reduces dendrite growth on the zinc anodes and improves cycle life and energy efficiency. To obtain a superior performance, the importance of controlling the operational conditions and using custom nanostructural designs, optimal electrode materials, and carefully adjusted electrolytes is highlighted. In conclusion, porous nanostructures and nanoscale materials significantly boost the energy density, longevity, and efficiency of Zn-air batteries. It is suggested that future research should focus on the fundamental design principles of these materials to further enhance the battery performance and drive sustainable energy solutions.

Material Engineering Strategies for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Catalysts

Water electrolysis, a key enabler of hydrogen energy production, presents significant potential as a strategy for achieving net-zero emissions. However, the widespread deployment of water electrolysis is currently limited by the high-cost and scarce noble metal electrocatalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Given this challenge, design and synthesis of cost-effective and high-performance alternative catalysts have become a research focus, which necessitates insightful understandings of HER fundamentals and material engineering strategies. Distinct from typical reviews that concentrate only on the summary of recent catalyst materials, this review article shifts focus to material engineering strategies for developing efficient HER catalysts. In-depth analysis of key material design approaches for HER catalysts, such as doping, vacancy defect creation, phase engineering, and metal-support engineering, are illustrated along with typical research cases. A special emphasis is placed on designing noble metal-free catalysts with a brief discussion on recent advancements in electrocatalytic water-splitting technology. The article also delves into important descriptors, reliable evaluation parameters and characterization techniques, aiming to link the fundamental mechanisms of HER with its catalytic performance. In conclusion, it explores future trends in HER catalysts by integrating theoretical, experimental and industrial perspectives, while acknowledging the challenges that remain.

Precious Metal Free Hydrogen Evolution Catalyst Design and Application

The quest to identify precious metal free hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts has received unprecedented attention in the past decade. In this Review, we focus our attention to recent developments in precious metal free hydrogen evolution reactions in acidic and alkaline electrolyte owing to their relevance to commercial and near-commercial low-temperature electrolyzers. We provide a detailed review and critical analysis of catalyst activity and stability performance measurements and metrics commonly deployed in the literature, as well as review best practices for experimental measurements (both in half-cell three-electrode configurations and in two-electrode device testing). In particular, we discuss the transition from laboratory-scale hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst measurements to those in single cells, which is a critical aspect crucial for scaling up from laboratory to industrial settings but often overlooked. Furthermore, we review the numerous catalyst design strategies deployed across the precious metal free HER literature. Subsequently, we showcase some of the most commonly investigated families of precious metal free HER catalysts; molybdenum disulfide-based, transition metal phosphides, and transition metal carbides for acidic electrolyte; nickel molybdenum and transition metal phosphides for alkaline. This includes a comprehensive analysis comparing the HER activity between several families of materials highlighting the recent stagnation with regards to enhancing the intrinsic activity of precious metal free hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts. Finally, we summarize future directions and provide recommendations for the field in this area of electrocatalysis.

Effect of multi-interface electron transfer on water splitting and an innovative electrolytic cell for synergistic hydrogen production and degradation

The cleaning and utilization of industry wastewater are still a big challenge. In this work, we mainly investigate the effect of electron transfer among multi-interfaces on water electrolysis reaction. Typically, the CoS2, Co3S4/CoS2 (designated as CS4-2) and Co3S4/Co9S8/CoS2 (designated as CS4-8-2) samples are prepared on a large scale by one-step molten salt method. It is found that because of the different work functions (designated as WF; WF(Co3S4) = 4.48eV, WF(CoS2) = 4.41eV, WF(Co9S8) = 4.18 eV), the effective heterojunctions at the multi-interfaces of CS4-8-2 sample, which obviously improve interface charge transfer. Thus, the CS4-8-2 sample shows an excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity (134 mV/10 mA cm-2, 40 mV dec-1). The larger double-layer capacitance (Cdl = 17.1 mF cm-2) of the CS4-8-2 sample indicates more electrochemical active sites, compared to the CoS2 and CS4-2 samples. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation proves that due to interface polarization under electric field, the multi-interfaces effectively promote electron transfer and regulate electron structure, thus promoting the adsorption of OH- and dissociation of H2O. Moreover, an innovative norfloxacin (NFX) electrolytic cell (EC) is developed through introducing NFX into the electrolyte, in which efficient NFX degradation and hydrogen production are synergistically achieved. To reach 50 mA cm-2, the required cell voltage of NFX-EC has decreased by 35.2%, compared to conventional KOH-EC. After 2h running at 1 V, 25.5% NFX was degraded in the NFX EC. This innovative NFX-EC is highly energy-efficient, which is promising for the synergistic cleaning and utilization of industry wastewater.

MnS-BaS Heterostructures as Effective Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The inadequate electrical conductivity of metal sulfides, along with their tendency to agglomerate, has hindered their use in energy storage and catalysis. The construction of a heterojunction can ameliorate these deficiencies to some extent. In this paper, MnS-BaS heterojunction catalysts were prepared by a hydrothermal method, which is a simple and inexpensive process. The MnS-BaS heterojunction catalysts exhibited superior performance owing to the strong synergistic interaction between MnS and BaS. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal strong interactions at the heterojunction interface and significant electron transfer between MnS and BaS, which further modulates the electronic structure of Mn. The elevation of the center of the d-band enhances the adsorption of oxygen and oxygen-containing intermediates on the catalyst, thus promoting the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The practical application of MnS-BaS catalysts was tested by assembling zinc-air batteries. This study provides a rational strategy for designing transition metal catalysts that are efficient and low cost.

Synergistic effects of CuS/TiO2 heterointerfaces: Enhanced cathodic CO2 reduction and anodic CH3OH oxidation for paired electrosynthesis of formate

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide into energy-carrying compounds or value-added chemicals is of great significance for diminishing the greenhouse effect. However, it is still imperative to replace the less-value anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to improve the technical economy. Herein, we firstly reported a bifunctional CuS/TiO2 catalyst for both anodic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and cathodic carbon dioxide reduction (CO2R). The in-built abundant CuS/TiO2 heterointerfaces are found to boost the CO2R and MOR to produce formate. Based on the unique bifunctionality of CuS/TiO2, a paired electrosynthesis of formate was performed with a total Faradaic efficiency (FE) of about 170 %, in which the cathodic CO2R achieved a formate FE of about 70 %, and the anodic MOR exhibited an almost 100 % formate FE.

An Overview and Future Perspectives of Rechargeable Flexible Zn-Air Batteries

Environmental friendliness and low-cost zinc-air batteries for flexible rechargeable applications have great potential in the field of flexible electronics and smart wearables owing to high energy density and long service life. However, the current technology of flexible rechargeable zinc-air batteries to meet the commercialization needs still facing enormous challenges due to the poor adaptability of each flexible component of the zinc-air batteries. This review focused on the latest progress over the past 5 years in designing and fabricating flexible self-standing air electrodes, flexible electrolytes and zinc electrodes of flexible Zn-air batteries, meanwhile the basic working principle of each component of flexible rechargeable zinc-air batteries and battery structures optimization are also described. Finally, challenges and prospects for the future development of flexible rechargeable zinc-air batteries are discussed. This work is intended to provide insights and general guidance for future exploration of the design and fabrication on high-performance flexible rechargeable zinc-air batteries.

One-Step Pyrolysis Construction of Bimetallic Atom-Cluster Sites for Boosting Bifunctional Catalytic Activity in Zn-Air Batteries

Due to their unique advantages, single atoms and clusters of transition metals are expected to achieve a breakthrough in catalytic activity, but large-scale production of active materials remains a challenge. In this work, a simple solvent-free one-step annealing method is developed and applied to construct diatomic and cluster active sites in activated carbon by utilizing the strong anchoring ability of phenanthroline to metal ions, which can be scaled for mass productions. Benefiting from the synergy between the different metals, the obtained sub-nano-bimetallic atom-cluster catalysts (FeNiAC -NC) exhibit high oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) activity (E1/2 = 0.936 V vs. RHE) and a small ORR/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) potential gap of only 0.594 V. An in-house pouch Zn-air battery is assembled using an FeNiAC -NC catalyst, which demonstrates a stability of 1000 h, outperforming previous reports. The existence of clusters and their effects on catalytic activity is analyzed by density functional theory calculations to reveal the chemistry of nano-bimetallic atom-cluster catalysts.

Modulation of Phase Transition in Cobalt Selenide with Simultaneous Construction of Heterojunctions for Highly-Efficient Oxygen Electrocatalysis in Zinc-Air Battery

Phase transformation of cobalt selenide (CoSe2 ) can effectively modulate its intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. However, enhancing electroconductivity and catalytic activity/stability of CoSe2 still remains challenging. Heterostructure engineering may be feasible to optimize interfacial properties to promote the kinetics of oxygen electrocatalysis on a CoSe2 -based catalyst. Herein, a heterostructure consisting of CoSe2 and cobalt nitride (CoN) embedded in a hollow carbon cage is designed via a simultaneous phase/interface engineering strategy. Notably, the phase transition of orthorhombic-CoSe2 to cubic-CoSe2 (c-CoSe2 ) accompanied by in situ CoN formation is realized to build the c-CoSe2 /CoN heterointerface, which exhibits excellent/highly stable activities for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER). Notably, heterostructure can modulate the local coordination environment and increase Co-Se/N bond lengths. Theoretical calculations show that Co-site (c-CoSe2 ) with an electronic state near Fermi energy level is the main active site for ORR/OER.Energetical tailoring of the d-orbital electronic structure of the Co atom of c-CoSe2 in heterostructure by in situ CoN incorporation lowers thermodynamic barriers for ORR/OER. Attractively, a zinc-air battery with a c-CoSe2 -CoN cathode displays excellent cycling stability (250 h) and charge/discharge voltage loss (0.953/0.96 V). It highlights that heterointerface engineering provides an option for modulating the bifunctional activity of metal selenides with controlled phase transformation.

Low-Potential Iodide Oxidation Enables Dual-Atom CoFe─N─C Catalysts for Ultra-Stable and High-Energy-Efficiency Zn-Air Batteries

The low energy efficiency and limited cycling life of rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs) arising from the sluggish oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OERs) severely hinder their commercial deployment. Herein, a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived strategy associated with subsequent thermal fixing treatment is proposed to fabricate dual-atom CoFe─N─C nanorods (Co1 Fe1 ─N─C NRs) containing atomically dispersed bimetallic Co/Fe sites, which can promote the energy efficiency and cyclability of ZABs simultaneously by introducing the low-potential oxidation redox reactions. Compared to the mono-metallic nanorods, Co1 Fe1 ─N─C NRs exhibit remarkable ORR performance including a positive half-wave potential of 0.933 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in alkaline electrolyte. Surprisingly, after introducing the potassium iodide (KI) additive, the oxidation overpotential of Co1 Fe1 ─N─C NRs to reach 10 mA cm-2 can be significantly reduced by 395 mV compared to the conventional destructive OER. Theoretical calculations show that the markedly decreased overpotential of iodide oxidation can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of neighboring Co─Fe diatomic sites as the unique adsorption sites. Overall, aqueous ZABs assembled with Co1 Fe1 ─N─C NRs and KI as the air-cathode catalyst and electrolyte additive, respectively, can deliver a low charging voltage of 1.76 V and ultralong cycling stability of over 230 h with a high energy efficiency of ≈68%.

Co3Fe7/CoCx nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes synergistically promote the oxygen reduction reaction in Zn-air batteries

Efficient and stable non-precious metal catalysts (NPMCs) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are crucial for the advancement of Zn-air batteries. Herein, we report a supramolecular self-scarifying template and confinement pyrolysis strategy to obtain an efficient ORR catalyst of well-dispersed Co3Fe7/CoCx heterostructure nanoparticles encapsulated by nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co3Fe7/CoCx@N-CNT). The as-synthesized Co3Fe7/CoCx@N-CNT catalyst exhibited outstanding ORR activity, with a half-wave potential of 0.88 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode, and good stability. The Zn-air battery based on the Co3Fe7/CoCx@N-CNT cathode achieved a peak power density of 265 mW cm-2 and a durability of over 200 h, which is superior to most reported NPMCs and even the Pt/C counterpart. The physical characterization and electrochemical poisoning experiments revealed that the Co3Fe7/CoCx nanoparticles in the core along with pyridine N and Fe-Nx hosted in the carbon nanotube all acted as active sites for the ORR. Further theoretical calculations showed that the charge redistribution between the Co3Fe7/CoCx nanoparticles and the Fe-Nx carbon overlayers downshifted the d-band center of Fe and optimized the adsorption ability, which boosted the ORR kinetics. This work provides an effective strategy to synthesize non-precious metal ORR catalysts with multiple active sites and highlights the synergistic role of encapsulated nanoparticles and carbon support.

A Review of Transition Metal Boride, Carbide, Pnictide, and Chalcogenide Water Oxidation Electrocatalysts

Transition metal borides, carbides, pnictides, and chalcogenides (X-ides) have emerged as a class of materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Because of their high earth abundance, electrical conductivity, and OER performance, these electrocatalysts have the potential to enable the practical application of green energy conversion and storage. Under OER potentials, X-ide electrocatalysts demonstrate various degrees of oxidation resistance due to their differences in chemical composition, crystal structure, and morphology. Depending on their resistance to oxidation, these catalysts will fall into one of three post-OER electrocatalyst categories: fully oxidized oxide/(oxy)hydroxide material, partially oxidized core@shell structure, and unoxidized material. In the past ten years (from 2013 to 2022), over 890 peer-reviewed research papers have focused on X-ide OER electrocatalysts. Previous review papers have provided limited conclusions and have omitted the significance of "catalytically active sites/species/phases" in X-ide OER electrocatalysts. In this review, a comprehensive summary of (i) experimental parameters (e.g., substrates, electrocatalyst loading amounts, geometric overpotentials, Tafel slopes, etc.) and (ii) electrochemical stability tests and post-analyses in X-ide OER electrocatalyst publications from 2013 to 2022 is provided. Both mono and polyanion X-ides are discussed and classified with respect to their material transformation during the OER. Special analytical techniques employed to study X-ide reconstruction are also evaluated. Additionally, future challenges and questions yet to be answered are provided in each section. This review aims to provide researchers with a toolkit to approach X-ide OER electrocatalyst research and to showcase necessary avenues for future investigation.

Interfacial Coupling Engineering Boosting Electrocatalytic Performance of CoFe Layered Double Hydroxide Assembled on N-Doped Porous Carbon Nanosheets for Water Splitting and Flexible Zinc-Air Batteries

The disadvantages of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) such as easy stacking, poor inherent conductivity, and limited versatility hinder their application in splitting water and zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Interface engineering to regulate the electron distribution of LDHs by introducing another component is a way to compensate for the poor electron transport capacity of LDHs during catalysis. Herein, a hierarchical structure is synthesized by assembling CoFe-LDH nanosheets onto the surface of layered N-doped porous carbon (NPC), CoFe-LDH@NPC, by using an interface engineering strategy. CoFe-LDH@NPC has high catalytic activity for the oxygen/hydrogen evolution reaction (OER/HER) with overpotentials of 280/100 mV, respectively. The two-electrode water splitting catalyzed by CoFe-LDH@NPC only needs 1.61 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for 60 h. The theoretical results show that there is an electron-deficient/electron-rich interface between the NPC substrate and the CoFe-LDH in CoFe-LDH@NPC. The electrons on the coupling interface are easily transferred, which results in a change of the adsorption behavior of the reaction intermediates and improves the catalytic activity for the OER and HER. In addition, CoFe-LDH@NPC-catalyzed rechargeable flexible ZABs have excellent performance with low charge-discharge polarization (0.87 V) and a long-term stability of 65 h.

Recycling cobalt in spent lithium ion batteries to design CoN/HPCF/CoN electrocatalysts for advanced zinc-air batteries

Cobalt (Co) in spent lithium ion batteries was recycled to design a hollow and porous CoN/HPCF/CoN bifunctional electrocatalyst. It reveals superior rechargeable zinc-air battery performance (peak power density is 161.6 mW cm-2) with excellent stability.

Dual Electronic Modulations on NiFeV Hydroxide@FeOx Boost Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting

Nickel-iron based hydroxides have been proven to be excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, whereas they are inactive toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which severely limits their large-scale applications in electrochemical water splitting. Herein, a heterostructure consisted of NiFeV hydroxide and iron oxide supported on iron foam (NiFeV@FeOx /IF) has been designed as a highly efficient bifunctional (OER and HER) electrocatalyst. The V doping and intimate contact between NiFeV hydroxide and FeOx not only improve the entire electrical conductivity of the catalyst but also afford more high-valence Ni which serves as active sites for OER. Meanwhile, the introduction of V and FeOx reduces the electron density on lattice oxygen, which greatly facilitates desorption of Hads . All of these endow the NiFeV@FeOx /IF with exceptionally low overpotentials of 218 and 105 mV to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm-2 for OER and HER, respectively. More impressively, the electrolyzer requires an ultra-low cell voltage of 1.57 V to achieve 100 mA cm-2 and displays superior electrochemical stability for 180 h, which outperforms commercial RuO2 ||Pt/C and most of the representative catalysts reported to date. This work provides a unique route for developing high-efficiency electrocatalyst for overall water splitting.

Constructing abundant interfaces by decorating MoP quantum dots on CoP nanowires to induce electronic structure modulation for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Interface engineering is a method of enhancing catalytic activity while maintaining a material's surface properties. Thus, we explored the interface effect mechanism via a hierarchical structure of MoP/CoP/Cu3P/CF. Remarkably, the heterostructure MoP/CoP/Cu3P/CF demonstrates an outstanding overpotential of 64.6 mV at 10 mA cm-2 with a Tafel slope of 68.2 mV dec-1 in 1 M KOH. DFT calculations indicate that the MoP/CoP interface in the catalyst exhibited the most favorable H* adsorption characteristics (-0.08 eV) compared to the pure phases of CoP (0.55 eV) and MoP (0.22 eV). This result can be attributed to the apparent modulation of electronic structures within the interface domains. Additionally, the CoCH/Cu(OH)2/CF‖MoP/CoP/Cu3P/CF electrolyzer demonstrates excellent overall water splitting performance, achieving 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH solution with a modest voltage of only 1.53 V. This electronic structure adjustment via interface effects provides a new and efficient approach to prepare high-performance hydrogen production catalysts.

Local Electric Field Induced by Atomic-Level Donor-Acceptor Couple of O Vacancies and Mn Atoms Enables Efficient Hybrid Capacitive Deionization

Transition metal oxides suffer from slow salt removal rate (SRR) due to inferior ions diffusion ability in hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI). Local electric field (LEF) can efficiently improve the ions diffusion kinetics in thin electrodes for electrochemical energy storage. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge to facilitate the ions diffusion in bulk electrodes with high loading mass for HCDI. Herein, this work delicately constructs a LEF via engineering atomic-level donor (O vacancies)-acceptor (Mn atoms) couples, which significantly facilitates the ions diffusion and then enables a high-performance HCDI. The LEF boosts an extended accelerated ions diffusion channel at the particle surface and interparticle space, resulting in both remarkably enhanced SRR and salt removal capacity. Convincingly, the theoretical calculations demonstrate that electron-enriched Mn atoms center coupled with an electron-depleted O vacancies center is formed due to the electron back-donation from O vacancies to adjacent Mn centers. The resulted LEF efficiently reduce the ions diffusion energy barrier. This work sheds light on the effect of atomic-level LEF on improving ions diffusion kinetics at high loading mass application and paves the way for the design of transition metal oxides toward high-performance HCDI applications.

Tailored Heterojunction Active Sites for Oxygen Electrocatalyst Promotion in Zinc-Air Batteries

Rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are promising energy storage systems due to their low-cost and safety. However, the working principle of ZABs is based on oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which display sluggish kinetic and low stability. Herein, this work proposes a novel method to design a heterogeneous CoP/CoO electrocatalyst on mesopore nanobox carbon/carbon nanotube (CoP/CoO@MNC-CNT) that enriched active sites and synergistic effect. Moreover, the well-defined heterointerfaces could lower the energy barrier for intermediate species adsorption and promote OER and ORR electrochemical performances. The CoP/CoO@MNC-CNT electrocatalyst presents a high half-wave potential of 0.838 V for ORR and a small overpotential of 270 mV for OER. The ZABs-based CoP/CoO@MNC-CNT air-cathode shows an open-circuit voltage of 1.409 V, the long-term cycle life of 500 h with a small voltage difference change of 7.7%. Additionally, the flexible ZABs exhibit highly mechanical stability, demonstrating their application potential in wearable electronic devices.

Rational Design of Flexible Zn-Based Batteries for Wearable Electronic Devices

The advent of 5G and the Internet of Things has spawned a demand for wearable electronic devices. However, the lack of a suitable flexible energy storage system has become the "Achilles' Heel" of wearable electronic devices. Additional problems during the transformation of the battery structure from conventional to flexible also present a severe challenge to the battery design. Flexible Zn-based batteries, including Zn-ion batteries and Zn-air batteries, have long been considered promising candidates due to their high safety, eco-efficiency, substantial reserve, and low cost. In the past decade, researchers have come up with elaborate designs for each portion of flexible Zn-based batteries to improve the ionic conductivities, mechanical properties, environment adaptabilities, and scalable productions. It would be helpful to summarize the reported strategies and compare their pros and cons to facilitate further research toward the commercialization of flexible Zn-based batteries. In this review, the current progress in developing flexible Zn-based batteries is comprehensively reviewed, including their electrolytes, cathodes, and anodes, and discussed in terms of their synthesis, characterization, and performance validation. By clarifying the challenges in flexible Zn-based battery design, we summarize the methodology from previous investigations and propose challenges for future development. In the end, a research paradigm of Zn-based batteries is summarized to fit the burgeoning requirement of wearable electronic devices in an iterative process, which will benefit the future development of Zn-based batteries.

Emerging Heterogeneous Supports for Efficient Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis plays a fundamental role in many fields, such as metallurgy, medicine, chemical industry, and energy conversion. Anchoring active electrocatalysts with controllable loading and uniform dispersion onto suitable supports has become an attractive topic. This is because the supports can not only have the potential to improve catalytic activity and stability through the interaction between support and catalytic center, but also can reduce precious metal consumption by improving atomic utilization. Herein, recent theoretical and experimental progresses concerning the development of supports to anchor electrocatalytic materials are first reviewed. Next, their controllable syntheses, characterization techniques, metal-support electronic interactions, and structure-performance relationships are presented. Some representative carbon supports and non-carbonaceous supports, as well as recently reported star supports such as 2D supports, single atom catalysts, and self-supported catalysts are also summarized. In addition, the significant role of support in stabilizing and regulating catalytic active sites is particularly emphasized. Finally, challenges, opportunities, key problems, and further promising solutions for supported catalysts are proposed.

Supramolecular Polymer Intertwined Free-Standing Bifunctional Membrane Catalysts for All-Temperature Flexible Zn-Air Batteries

Rational construction of flexible free-standing electrocatalysts featuring long-lasting durability, high efficiency, and wide temperature tolerance under harsh practical operations are fundamentally significant for commercial zinc-air batteries. Here, 3D flexible free-standing bifunctional membrane electrocatalysts composed of covalently cross-linked supramolecular polymer networks with nitrogen-deficient carbon nitride nanotubes are fabricated (referred to as PEMAC@NDCN) by a facile self-templated approach. PEMAC@NDCN demonstrates the lowest reversible oxygen bifunctional activity of 0.61 V with exceptional long-lasting durability, which outperforms those of commercial Pt/C and RuO₂. Theoretical calculations and control experiments reveal the boosted electron transfer, electrolyte mass/ion transports, and abundant active surface site preferences. Moreover, the constructed alkaline Zn-air battery with PEMAC@NDCN air-cathode reveals superb power density, capacity, and discharge-charge cycling stability (over 2160 cycles) compared to the reference Pt/C + RuO₂. Solid-state Zn-air batteries enable a high power density of 211 mW cm^-2, energy density of 1056 Wh kg^-1, stable charge-discharge cycling of 2580 cycles for 50 mA cm^-2, and wide temperature tolerance from - 40 to 70 °C with retention of 86% capacity compared to room-temperature counterparts, illustrating prospects over harsh operations.
